San Diego Desserts- quick snack

San Diego Desserts has changed ownership as well as its name (it is now Bistro Sixty).

Welcome back to mmm-yoso!!!.  This is an online diary.  About food.  Kirk is still on vacation, ed (from Yuma) is in Yuma and Cathy is here now.

Hi again.  Just a quick post. The other evening, I met some friends for dinner which did not include dessert.  Driving home, we decided to stop here. 042
No.  Not the pawn shop.  San Diego Desserts.  ( The outdoor/added on patio area used to be a drive through dry cleaner; an era long gone).  I saw the name on the building and remembered I had had a slice of cake at a party earlier this year and was told the cake was made here.  I remember the cake was pretty good.  That was enough reason to stop; otherwise I don't crave sweet…045
However, this almond croissant  was delicately flaky and filled with a nice marzipan layer, topped with sliced almonds and very good. 046
I got the pistachio baklava roll, which was filled with pistachios and not much honey or sugar syrup. It was not soggy and crispy flaky.  I liked it. 047
One of us got a latte and the other a cappuccino.  The cappuccino tasted less of milk and more of coffee.  Each of these cups was at least 16 ounces and pretty much a soup bowl of beverage.

Total cost was $10.25.  It was good and a nice stop.  Just enough.

San Diego Desserts has a  Sunday bunch and serves lunch and dinner here, in addition there is a wine bar.   I didn't know this and will have to come back…

  1. ive been to this place a few times…their brunch is worth trying btw. and yes, their cake is awesome. try the monte bianco if you like chocolate, white chocolate and whip creamy taste. =)

  2. Yum. And its close by. Thanks. I like desserts but Extraordinary Desserts is way way too expensive. Heaven Sent is close by, and that’s pretty good. Have to check this place out

  3. Thanks for the recommendation, dd. The smaller cakes looked good, I just wasn’t in much of a ‘sweets’ craving…this was a flaky pastry/nutty craving time.
It’s only two blocks from College Avenue, Stephen. It used to be located more in Mission Hills/Hillcrest. I liked the ability to have easy parking as well as the selection.

  4. They do a Staycation every Wednesday Night. The cuisine is from a different local each week. Spain, New Orleans, Thai, French, etc. Great value, good wine.

  5. I saw that on the paper menu we took, Pete. Now I have another meal on my list…Thanks for the recommendation! Welcome to our blog.

  6. I love their baklava rolls – I haven’t seen them in roll form anywhere else. This post was a lovely remember that I should pick up some after work tonight!

  7. Hi Mary- Yes, the baklava this way has less honey or simple syrup; at least not soaking through the bottom. The buttery flaky crust and nuttiness with a little sweet is all I need. Glad to have reminded you!

  8. I’ve been coming here for a couple of years and have a love/hate relationship with it. Some of the desserts are great and others are terrible. Sometimes the pastries are flaky, other times stale. Sometimes the service is great, other times they couldn’t care less if I turned around and left. I’m glad you had a good experience there…I may need to try it again.

  9. One of my first jobs was in a corner (Polish) bakery in Detroit, (a very, very long time ago) James. I kind of know by looking if pastries and breads are fresh. I did notice some of the pastries and cakes did not look as fresh as what we chose. Service was attentive. It was our first time and a spur of the moment stop. If I were unsure, I’d ask what was made fresh today. I noticed they are advertising the brunch and lunch in the SD Union-Trib, so maybe things are better.
