It’s that time of the year again – HFS at Centerpark Labs Revisited

Ah yes……as we flip the pages of the calendar and the weather turns warmer, it's time for poke again here. I just checked and noticed I hadn't been to HFS at Centerpark Labs in over a year! How the heck can that be? Well, I think that two trips "home" got me my poke fixes. Though my recent visit to Makai Sushi had me wondering how HFS at Centerpark was doing. So, it was time to head on over……old habits kicked in and I arrived 5 minutes before opening, time enough to beat the lines.

HFS Rev 01

By five minutes of opening; there were already a dozen people in line.

As per my usual habit; I ordered a Medium Bowl with brown rice, which is still priced at $19 with the "Kilauea" and the Wasabi Ahi; mainly for the Missus, while I got a half pound of Shoyu Poke ($26.99/lb). Since I'd be taking this home, I asked that the poke and rice be separate. The nice young ladies working separated things and even put the fish on ice! Such great service. And of course, taking this home meant that the Missus needed Her "typical" poke set-up. Luckily, I had gone shopping earlier in the day and was prepared.

HFS Rev 02

HFS Rev 03

Man, that brown rice was nicely cooked, firm and so nutty-earthy in flavor!

HFS Rev 04

The Shoyu Poke was good; the fish of decent quality….like I tell folks here….HFS is about Foodland quality; while not top of the line "back home"; it's about as good as it gets here in San Diego. We really didn't need the shoyu sauce, which is provided on the side.

HFS Rev 05

As for the other poke…the Missus really enjoyed the Wasabi version this time….I also thought the quality of fish in the wasabi was better. While it was a mildly "sinus clearing", the pungency did not overpower the poke. The Kilauea was mildly spicy and the fish of decent quality as well.

HFS Rev 06

I detected a bit of a different flavor profile in the Kilauea….I'm wondering if they've started using a chili crisp in it?

Anyway, this hit the spot. And as the weather turns warmer, I'll probably be going more often. I know that HFS has opened a new location in Poway; but after my experience with the Liberty Station location, I'll probably just stick with the Centerpark Labs location. So, apologies in advance if you start seeing more HFS posts as things heat up!

Ahi Poke from Makai Sushi (Hillcrest)

A couple of months back, I saw this "sushi" shop while driving down Fifth Avenue.

Makai Sushi 01

It wasn't the "sushi" sign that caught my eye, but the name, "Makai"….hmmm, in Hawaiian it means "toward the sea"….versus "Mauka" which means "toward the mountains". At least that's what struck me when I saw that sign. So, I got back home and did that Google thingy and read that the owner is originally from Kauai. And then he opened a shop in Hillcrest? Kinda interesting.

I've mentioned hating the parking in Hillcrest in other posts and even though I'm quite "niele", seeing a menu with all kinds of "rolls", and poke bowls, etc…..the only thing that I was curious about was the ahi poke. And since the place opens at noon and is closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays….well, I just wasn't that motivated to deal with the parking situation and the crowds. Until…..I recently had an appointment in Hillcrest which would be finished just before noon. Seemed like the perfect opportunity to check the place out. I walked on over arriving just after the clock struck twelve.

And like I said…taking a look at the menu, there was really only one thing I was interested in.

Makai Sushi 02b

I walked on into the tiny restaurant and the counter and placed an order for the Ahi Bowl ($20) with the sweet and very nice young lady that was working.

Makai Sushi 03

The owner, Matt, came on over and he spoke major pidgin! So, we wen talk story. He's from Poipu on Kauai! I asked him what brought him to San Diego and he told me that he one local kine sushi place in a market in Poipu (I found this in the online HAL guide) with the same name. And then Covid happened and his business was gone. He decided to move to San Diego and open up the same kind of place. But why Hillcrest? Well, he told me that he wasn't looking in the area, but Hillcrest found him! And he's doing good business here. Good for him!

I got my poke bowl, thanked the both of them, and den wen hele…….

I really liked the folks at Makai, so I truly hoped this wasn't going to be one of those mainland "Chi-poke" kinda bowls, you know, 2 ounces of fish, and then all kinds of "stuffs".

Well, upon opening, even though there was avocado, some greens, sort of kimchi like cucumber, it was mostly fish. Though there seemed to be a bit more "sauce" than I usually like.

Makai Sushi 04  Makai Sushi 05  There was a good amount of decently cooked rice. I could have done without the "wasabi aioli" and the overly sweet unagi sauce. I guess I just wanted some good shoyu poke? The fish danced close to the edge of being over-sauced, but avoided falling off that cliff. I did enjoy the creaminess of the avocado and the mild sour-spice of the cucumber.

The fish was of decent quality, not the best, but tender, and most importantly, without all the "sugi"; the chewy connective tissue.

I enjoyed the addition of tobiko as it added another layer of textural contrast and some good, mild saltiness to the poke.

Makai Sushi 06

While not quite as good as It's Raw or HFS in my opinion….though I gotta return to HFS soon. I prefer this to 8th and B or Poke Etc, and definitely over all those "chi-poke" places.

If it were in my 'hood, I'd probably visit periodically. Especially since the folks here are so welcoming…..Matt does display that "Aloha Spirit"!

As it is; if I'm passing thru and hit the parking lot-tery, I'll stop by again.

Honolulu – Off the Hook Poke Market (Manoa) and Heading Home

On the way back from doing Manoa Falls, there was a poke shop I had heard about and wanted to check out. Right on East Manoa Road, across the street from the parking for Manoa Marketplace resides Off the Hook Poke Market.

IMG_5490

It's in the same building as a place I used to go to once in a while Andy's Sandwiches. The place looked fairly bustling when we arrived, but the line moved quickly. And like many local poke shops, you walk to the counter and order.

IMG_5492

Anyway we got two half pound containers of poke. We were actually going to just go to Kaimuki Park and grind; but ended up eating at Oahu Grill instead. Good thing we had a cooler with us.

We ended up having it with our last dinner (along with jiaozi of course) before leaving the islands.

IMG_5540

We thought that the Cold Ginger Ahi was the better of the two.

IMG_5533

The ahi was good quality and tender. The sauce, in the spirit of local kine ginger-scallion sauce; you know, to make cold ginger chicken, was pretty strong and kind of dominated the dish.

We also got the Hawaiian Style Ahi. Basically Ahi Limu Poke.

IMG_5537

This one was very salty; couldn't make out the inamona, and the fish, while decent, wasn't as good as what was used in the cold ginger ahi. IMG_5491

Well, maybe we should have just gone back to Ono Seafood or the new location of Fresh Catch in Kaimuki (where they've moved). But what the heck, still better then what we get here in SD and it's good to try, right?

We were flying HAL First Class again. The Premier Lounge at Daniel K. Inouye Airport is nothing to write home about. There are some standard drinks and the snacks are the stuffs you get in-flight; pretzels, peanuts….you get it.

IMG_5543

Still, we enjoyed that the seats for HAL first are lie-flat; that's the main things for us.

IMG_5546

Dinner was an ok beef brisket.

IMG_5549

Strangely, my favorite thing was the Rainbow Cake; which reminded me of small kid time!

So, there you go. Another trip home in the books. Thanks so much for stopping by!

PB Poke House, Fish & Things Poke Bar, and Poke Chop. Does PB Now Stand for “Poke Bowl?”

I know I've mentioned trying new places and getting ideas for places when overhearing conversations. A few months ago, I was having coffee and breakfast at a usual neighborhood stop when I overheard two "bro's" chatting about food. Of course that got my attention. One of them kept on saying that PB was the best 'hood for food in town. Of course, where did he live? Right, you got that. Anyway, he mentioned that there were three poke places in PB he frequents and he even gave them in order of preference. Hmmm….you know, with the traffic, crowds, tourists, and let's not even talk about parking, I rarely get to PB. When I do it's a stop at Trader Joe's on Garnet and maybe head up Ingraham to Gelson's or  and perhaps Wayfarer. Though mornings in the "off-season" aren't too bad and I might make a stop….in fact, I'm waiting for things to settle down a bit before giving La Clochette another try (thanks for the rec' Kathy!).

But poke, eh? I had the idea of trying the three places mentioned. Of course, I wasn't going to push the issue. I've had my share of mediocre poke (at places that can't even spell "poke" – thought that's perhaps an indicator) at those "chi-poke" places. I just waited.

And then it happened a couple of months back, I needed to head out to Mission Boulevard…the Mission Beach side. So, I thought I'd just head up Mission and see if I could snag some parking on the street near one of the two places I had in mind. I really wasn't very confident, but guess what, there was street parking right on Mission across the street from….

PB Poke House:

As I crossed the street, I had a sense of nostalgia overtake me. You see PB Poke House is located here.

PB Poke House 01

Folks who have been in San Diego for a while might recognize the location. Yep, the original location of Da Kine's was upstairs. Man, the memories. I was consulting in San Diego in the late-90's and missing a plate lunch. And at that time Da Kine's was the only show in town. ….

Anyway, back to reality. The shop is fairly small, it has a few tables inside and one outdoors.

PB Poke House 02

The woman working was really friendly. Being more of a old fart basic poke guy, I went with the large Classic Shoyu Poke Bowl ($19.50). My bowl was ready in no time and I headed on home. This looked pretty good. As I opened up the bowl, I decided to set simple overall criteria – if this place was a block or two away, would I get the poke once in a while?

PB Poke House 03  PB Poke House 04  The fish looked not bad. As I looked at the seaweed salad and surimi salad, then had a taste of the poke, I got full on 8th and B "vibes". The fish was of decent quality, fairly tender, no off flavors. Like 8th and B the fish was highly sauced and on the sweeter end of the spectrum. Not sure why they call this "classic" since it's much sweeter than what I get back "home".

The portion size was fairly generous.

PB Poke House 05 PB Poke House 06  It might have been a bit much, but was really not bad at all. What was bad was the brown rice which was severely undercooked and hard. Not good eats.

So, the verdict? I guess if PB Poke House was around the corner I might eat here every so often, after all they have Spam Musubi. It's a bit too sweet and over-sauced for me, but the fish seemed of decent quality and the folks working were really friendly! PB Poke House 07

A couple of weeks later, I decided to see if I could sneak in and find parking at the next place which was right up the street from PB  Poke House. The name of the place……

Fish & Things Poke Bar:

In retrospect, I'm not sure I'd want to have seafood at a place that sells fish and "things"….what kind of things specifically? And after my visit, I did some checking and found that this is a franchise that started in Elk Grove? Just south of Sacramento, not quite the hotbed of fresh seafood in my mind.

Fish & Things 01

Of the three places visited, this was the nicest looking, and had decent indoor and a couple of outdoor tables.

Fish & Things 03

Like the other shops, this was the typical fast-casual set-up.

Fish & Things 02

The menu is pretty large, featuring some cooked dishes, sushi (ahem, rolls that is), and build your own "chi-poke" bowl.

Fish & Things 04

I went with the Classic (of course) Hawaiian, which seemed like shoyu ahi ($20.95).

Fish & Things 05 Fish & Things 06 My first thought when I opened things up was "what's up with the mac nuts?" The half nuts were just too big for this. The shoyu wasn't overly sweet, but was used quite sparingly. The quality of the fish, while not bad, wasn't to my liking. Too much "sugi" – rubbery connective tissue. The rice was cooked nicely….I forgot to ask about brown rice. I might have been traumatized after my visit to PB Poke House.

Fish & Things 07 Fish & THings 08  The portion size seemed on the smallish side, but still isn't bad compared to the "manini" 2 ounce portions I've seen at the chi-poke places.

To me second tier poke. And I'm sorry to say, second tier and raw fish is something I really don't want to eat.

After this, I decided to give it a rest and kinda left things as is. Until recently, when the Missus requested an item from a nearby Patisserie (more on that revisit later). Which just happened to be on the block right next to….

Poke Chop:

Which is another mini chain with several locations and another coming soon in Mission Valley. According to the "surfer bro'" this was the best of the three. I'd been having some luck finding parking in PB and this day was no different as I got a nice spot on Gresham, which would my "escape from PB" via Grand quite easy.

I walked on over and was crossing the street at 11 when the place opens.

Poke Chop 01a

By the time I crossed the street and walked in, there were already folks in line ahead of me.

Poke Chop 02

Looking at the menu, it was obvious this was one of those "chi-poke" places. Pick your fish, pick your stuffs, pick your sauce, etc…..

Poke Chop 04

It was interesting listening to what the guys in front of me ordered, lots of salmon and spicy tuna, mayo based sauces, won ton chips……

Poke Chop 03

As for me, well the marinated tuna wasn't ready, and the nice fellow working the front of house suggested I get the tuna, I took a medium bowl ($17.50), with both the Sweet Sesame and Ginger Shoyu on the side. Which is what I got, without all the other "chi-poke" stuffs, getting just ginger, and furikake, along with brown rice.

When I opened things up at home I had a pause.

Poke Chop 05  Poke Chop 06  Good lord, this looked totally like "saku", Carbon Monoxide treated fish. So much sugi, so dry looking, I was kinda not wanting to eat this. I tried a piece and it was mushy, yet chewy, with a metallic tinge. Yikes.

On the positive side, the brown rice was nutty and tender, but man, that sweet sesame was syrupy and super sweet, the shoyu tasted fine, but even that couldn't hide the quality, or lack thereof of the fish. The ginger-shoyu was fine but could not hide the very low quality of the fish. Egads, it reminded me of the first time I learned about "saku", fish treated with Carbon Monoxide for color and preservation all those years ago.

Poke Chop 07

Well, if you want to go the "chi-poke" route with a large portion of saku fish…well, this is for you. As for me, even if it were right across the street, I would not eat there. But heck, if its your thing have at it.

As for me, well we're headed "home" in a few months, and in the interim I'm going to HFS if I just need to get some poke!

Oahu – Bean About Town (Kaimuki), the Makapu’u Lighthouse Trail, and Revisiting Ono Seafood

After having a wonderful evening in town, I woke to this view in the morning.

IMG_5216

IMG_5217

Of course the Missus wanted to go "holo-holo" right away, but I needed some nourishment to keep up with Her. I had picked up some extra musubi from Iyasume the day before and had that for breakfast. And then we headed out. Of course we needed to get our caffeine fix on the way.

I'd read about a place named Bean About Town in Kathy's page about dining in Kaimuki and it seemed like the perfect spot. They have two shops; one in Waikiki and the other on Waialae avenue. Old timers would recognize the location as it is in the same building as where Tanoue's (which I wrote about in my post on visiting the old Neighborhood) used to be. It's a small shop, there looks to be like 5 parking spaces, so street parking is likely. If I recall, this used to be a barbershop when I was growing up.

IMG_5221

IMG_5495

Right across the street is Kaimuki Park where I wasted spent a good amount of time as a kid.

IMG_5220

The Missus ordered a pour over, which She loved, and I got a nice, fairly stiff Cold Brew.

IMG_5497

We had a nice seat on the little two top facing Waialae avenue. The Missus liked the design on my cup so much that She sent me back in the shop to see if they had some merch with the same design.

IMG_5499

Sadly they did not.

Well, it looks like we've got a place to get some coffee next time we're in the area.

Bean About Town
3538 Waialae Ave. Suite 101
Honolulu, HI 96816

From here we headed up Waialae to H-1, then Kalanianaole, past Hawaii Kai and Sandy's to our destination; to the gate that says Kaiwi Scenic Shoreline. Since we were fairly early we found parking. I had the Missus pick out some hiking (for Her this was all "walking") spots for this trip. She chose the Makapuu Lighthouse Trail. Man, I don't remember the last time I was here.

Anyway, it's a paved trail, that goes a bit over the mile each way, with a 500 foot elevation gain. I actually enjoyed myself. I even saw Pele's Chair on the path up!

IMG_5225

And of course, this is Hawaii, so you will see rainbows.

IMG_5229

You can see inside Koko Crater too.

IMG_5232

IMG_5235

IMG_5236

Of course the Lighthouse is not accessible for folks and is off limits, but you do get glimpses of it.

IMG_5237

IMG_5246

IMG_5238

There's a lookout at the top.

IMG_5244

And of course, there's Rabbit Island.

IMG_5241

It's a wonderful panoramic view.

IMG_5245

I heard that you'll often see whales, but none for us on this day.

IMG_5259

Still, it was a fun activity for us. I was having fun "playing tourist".

Afterwards we headed back; stopping in Aina Haina for a short break. On our way back to the hotel, the Missus said, "can we go to Ono Seafood, I want more poke!" Man, we hadn't been to Ono Seafood since 2019! It's long been a favorite of the Missus since we first visited in 2011. So, we headed on over and easily found parking in the lot for the apartment building the shop occupies.

IMG_5262

We got a poke bowl with brown rice and shoyu poke. Then headed back to the hotel to eat.

IMG_5264

Though it seemed a bit more "sauced" than  I recall, this was ono! Good shoyu, we enjoyed the limu, which adds a nice oceany-crunch. The fish was tender without the chewy connective tissue that permeates poke here in San Diego. Still one of our favorites for sure.

Ono Seafood
747 Kapahulu Ave. Apt 4
Honolulu, HI 96816

After lunch, we headed back on "footmobile" (when's the last time you heard that one?), walking to Don Quijote on Kaheka, then returning to Ala Moana to do a bit more shopping, before returning to our room for a nap.

IMG_5266

Looking out at the lanai, I noticed that I wasn't the only one enjoying the view.

IMG_5270

Thanks for stopping by, hope you're having a wonderful weekend!

Oahu – Waialua General Store and Dole Plantation

Before our last trip "back home", the Missus gave me some "guidelines" and places She wanted to check out. It was kinda strange because some of the places were major tourist spots. But in retrospect, it ended up being fun, because when I lived in Honolulu, we would never go to these places unless we had visitors. But heck, having left the islands a quarter of a century ago, I'm just a tourist these days too right?

One of the places was Dole Plantation. Yeeesh, the last time I was here was with the Missus, back in the late 90's. For me, "Dole" is the cannery in Kalihi, but this ended up being a nice drive to Wahiawa.

IMG_5130

For me this was mostly a bunch of shops and stuff.

IMG_5133

Coming from the grandson of immigrants who worked for Maui Pine; this seemed more about selling stuff than telling the story of those who worked. After all, my first job was picking pineapple over the summer.

IMG_5139

IMG_5141

I did enjoy seeing who was "really" in charge.

IMG_5137

For those that don't know. You don't mess with the chickens here. There's a real "pecking order" (sorry, couldn't help it) in place. Even the cats know…..

IMG_5138

The Missus did enjoy shopping here.

IMG_5143

And She ended up buying a really cute bag.

Dole Plantation
64-1550 Kamehameha Hwy.
Wahiawa, HI 96786

In some ways, I really enjoyed driving here. In a previous life I did frozen food delivery. Being the low man on the "totem pole", my route was places like Whitmore Village. Heck, I used to deliver to the Iroquois Point Naval Exchange in Ewa Beach! This is why I always picture "that" Ewa Beach when we're there visiting my In-Laws!

There was a place I had been wanting to check out near the North Shore. After a short discussion, the Missus and I decided to head on up to Waialua to get some poke at Waialua General Store. From what I recall the town was home to a major sugar mill back in the day.

IMG_5144

The little shop in a strip mall, before you get to the "North Shore" kind of stuffs is quite low key. They do a lot of Filipino BBQ and such, but I just wanted some poke.

IMG_5145

I could not believe the prices! The woman was so friendly! We got a "bowl" with the Hawaiian Style (aka Limu) and the Secret Spicy Poke. We were kind of hungry and were told to just head over to where the owner's husband was grilling things to sit and eat.

IMG_5153

We walked over and the gentleman doing the grilling told us to have a seat. There were several "old timers" (like me) there and I had a blast "talking story" with them.

As for the food; the Missus also got Seaweed Salad, can't tell you about that 'cause I don't like it, and pickled mango which was quite good.

IMG_5148

As for the poke, the quality of the fish was decent, wish there was more limu in the Hawaiian style, the secret to the "spicy" was kimchi, but this was still better than what I get here in San Diego. The Missus was hoping for a brown rice option, but c'mon, really?

IMG_5149

This was quite good!

I was having a great time chatting with the "old timers"; about how things have changed, what it's like living in SoCal and then coming back home. And then it happened. The gentleman grilling  pulled off two skewers and told us; "here this is for you"! For real? My first thought was to turn him down, after all you want them to make some money or offer to pay….but you just don't do that here, that would be an insult. It was such a beautiful gesture.

IMG_5151

The glaze had a nice sweet-salty-sour balance. Nice porkiness, fairly tender meat, it was quite good. The folks here were so friendly….like very old school style. We loved it. In the end I took a spare Hamilton and went into the shop and put it into the tip jar. The woman told me "eh, no need", but I said "no, I need".

This kind gesture made our day; the food was good, I loved the "small town vibe", if you want true Aloha Spirit here it was, or more precisely "lokomaika'i", to be generous, which is what the folks here were. It just puts you in the right frame of mind.

Waialua General Store
67-272 Goodale Ave.
Waialua, HI 96791

It was a wonderful day.

Dinner was, of course Jiaozi!

IMG_5155

And after dinner we strolled on over to the beachfront in Ewa Beach.

IMG_5164

It was a beautiful evening…..

IMG_5163

And for a moment, all seemed right in the world!

Thanks for stopping by!

It’s Raw Poke Shop (Ocean Beach) Revisited

Way back in February, "FOY" Jack in my post on 8th and B Poke, mentioned wanting to return to It's Raw in OB. Well, it had been a good 4 1/2 years since I had checked out It's Raw. And with the recent hot weather and the fact that I hadn't been to OB since that visit, I thought it was time to head on back. I probably should check out the area more often, but traffic and parking had always hindered my visits. And on this drive….well, I was headed down Saratoga when a dude on his bike jetted out from between two large parked vehicles blindly zooming across the street. I immediately hit the brakes, but the dude stopped and gave me the bad "half of the peace sign", spat on my car, and yelled at me. I rolled down the window to apologize, but he instantly told me to "get the f@(k" out of "his" neighborhood. He then pulled a can from his pocket and aimed it at me….I'm thinking it was mace or bear spray or ???? In the end he just as blindly zoomed off. I did see him again on Santa Monica Avenue yelling at another car. Sigh…..welcome to OB?

On the good side of things; I easily found parking on Santa Monica, something that can be difficult during the warmer months. I walked over to It's Raw, but it was early, so I took a short stroll.

Its Raw Rev 01

I must have gotten distracted…there are so many new places on Newport, that when I got back to It's Raw the shop had been open for a few minutes. And there was already a short line.

Its Raw Rev 02

The line does move quickly and it was nice to know that the Poke Plate here is $17, it was $15 back in 2019, so the increase in price isn't too bad. Heck, the equivalent at HFS is over $20 already.

If you're not familiar with It's Raw, the place is basically a take-out only shop with a cold case and and small counter.

Its Raw Rev 03

I ended up getting the Shoyu and the Wasabi Poke, also went with one scoop rice and the "macaroni" salad option.

Its Raw Rev 04  Its Raw Rev 05  This is what I unpacked at home. There was also two small containers, one with extra "shoyu", with very little shoyu flavor for that version of poke, I ended up not using it as it would have watered down the flavor even more. And the second, when I first looked at it, I asked myself "what the heck is Mul Kimchi doing here? This ain't a KFC place". Then I opened it and the fragrance hit me. I cracked up; it was haupia! A nice little touch.

The rice was nicely cooked.

I thought the Shoyu Poke was the better of the two I selected.

Its Raw Rev 06  Its Raw Rev 07  The fish was decently, not overly coated, the quality, while not as good as HFS was fine. Not too salty, a decent version of Shoyu Poke.

You did notice that I put "macaroni salad" in quotes above, right? Well, if you haven't read my earlier post or haven't been to It's Raw, you might be surprised to see that it's actually a "spaghetti salad". Nicely chilled, perfectly seasoned, not over-dressed, very plain, but in a good way.

As for the "Wasabi Poke".

Its Raw Rev 08

I found the fish to have quite a bit more "sugi" (our term for connective tissue) than the Shoyu Poke. It was also a bit too "sweet" for my taste and somewhat lacking in wasabi pungency.

Its Raw Rev 09Overall, I found the shoyu poke here to be good; I'll need to try something other than the wasabi poke the next time.

I'd say that It's Raw is my second favorite poke shop in San Diego, next to HFS. If it was in our 'hood, I'd visit quite regularly. As it is, even though It's Raw is just a bit over 5 miles from our house, it usually takes over 20 minutes to get there and then I have to find parking. Perhaps just going early in the week would be a solution? Not on Monday though, they are closed.

And to my "FOY" Jack. I'm wondering if you actually made it to It's Raw and if you did, what did you think?

Revisits – HFS at Centerpark Labs, Sue’s Korean Kitchen, Ngon Ngon to Go, and Tenkatori

So, I've noticed something about many of the places I head to during lunch. I get into the office rather early and start getting hungry at 10am or so. I also don't care much for crowds. Thus, I've developed a habit of heading to places that open a bit earlier than the usual 11am start time. Also, for these takeout visits, I usually don't stray too far afield.

Having done multiple posts on all of these places, I thought I'd just do a "COMC" (Clearing Out the Memory Card) post.

HFS at Centerpark Labs:

A regular stop on the rotation since my first visit back in August of 2020, HFS has since moved their retail location. It's still a stop when I want decent poke here in San Diego. And they've become quite popular. Heck, there were folks waiting at ten minutes before the opening time on this day.

HFS TO 01

HFS TO 02

For lunch I'll usually get the medium poke bowl with brown rice ($19) and can usually get out quite quickly. I stay with the ahi choices here. Not a fan of the salmon and stuff.

HFS TO 03

On this day it was the "Pearl Harbor", which had some good spice and the Shoyu Ahi which had a better quality of fish; quite tender and creamy.

It's still my first choice for poke in San Diego.

Sue's Korean Kitchen:

I've done a number of posts on Sue's since I first visited back in 2021. I like that they open at 10am and basically stick with one item on the menu, the Kimchi Fried Rice ($12.99). Though I've encountered "shrunken portions" at times, on my last two visits, things seem back to normal.

Sues TO 01

Sues TO 02

And though I've encountered "mushy rice syndrome" on a couple of visits, that was not the case this time around.

A nice Spam-i-fied, mildly spicy, fermented, carb load. The woman here cracks me up as she seems to remember me and what I order!

Ngon Ngon Food to Go:

Ngon Ngon might be as far as I would usually wander for lunch. They open at 9am, though are closed on Mondays and Tuesdays……need to remember that. I've kinda stuck to one item since my first set of visits when they opened a year ago, the Bo Luc Lac.

They've kinda rearranged things in the small space within Vinh Hung Market.

NgNg 01

I'll call in my order for #27, the "Cubed Beef Filet Mignon with Steamed Rice" ($16). Now while the though of comparing this to gourmet filet mignon might be a stretch, the beef is not bad. Slightly toothsome, edging on a bit too salty, with a touch of savory-sweetness.

NgNg 02

I'm not the biggest fan of the salad as at times the greens have been starting to brown, but this time it wasn't bad.

Tenkatori:

And finally, Tenkatori. Another regular stop since I first visited two years ago. The place opens at 1030 on weekdays, which is great since I hate that parking lot. There is one key thing when I do take out. I always call in my order when they open at 1030. The online ordering ordering, even though it says no service fee adds on $2-$3. For instance, I ordered the Mega Karaage Don on this day. I called in my order which was $17.30, using Uber Eats for Pick-up it's $22.80! Ordering Door Dash pick-up it's $22.50. For pick-up!

Tenkatori TO 01

Actually, I'm not sure why I ordered the Mega Don as it was way to much food….but what the heck; the chicken heats well in the air fryer.

So there you go…my recent early takeout lunch habits. I'm going to do turo turo in a separate post.

In your opinion, am I missing out on anything? And what have you been getting for lunch recently?

8th and B Poke (National City)

At the end of May last year, I heard about a poke shop opening in National City, but we were between trips and I never made it until September. 8th and B Poke is located; well, off of 8th Street and B Avenue in one of the new residential buildings.

8th and B 01

I had heard that the shop will sometimes sell out of poke, so I made sure to go before they opened. As a whole parking can be a bit "interesting" in this area as well.

The shop is small, with a small counter and a listing of the poke available posted on the "board". What can be confusing is that different sizes of poke "bowls/plates" are listed, but it doesn't tell you how much poke is involved with each.

8th and B 02

On the counter is a list of what kind of tako poke and salmon is available that day.

8th and B 02a

I figured, correctly that a Medium Plate would have two different poke and since it's really hard to find decent tako poke here in San Diego, I got the kimchi tako along with the ahi limu.

8th and B 03 8th and B 05   The texture of the ahi was good. Not too much connective tissue. The fish was highly sauced, and the sauce was on the sweet side. There wasn't a huge amount of limu and the sweetness of the sauce pretty much overshadowed any of the briny-oceany flavor provided by the seaweed, though the textural crunch provided much needed contrast. The fish was of decent quality and nicely prepped.

The rice had some shoyu based sauce and furikake on it and was decently cooked on all my visits.

There was surimi and seaweed salad; routine stuff. But for some reason what they called "fish mash", tuna scrape looked really familiar, but I couldn't put my finger on it at the time.

8th and B 04

The tako was just prepped octopus with sauce squirted on it, not marinated at all, thus without much flavor. It was also overly chewy.

8th and B 06

The ahi was not bad at all, better than most other places in San Diego. I downloaded my photos and made a note to return. I must be getting old, because we went on a couple of trips after this visit, and I totally forgot about the place. And then on my last post on Poke Etc, "FOY" Jack mentioned 8th and B! Yikes, I had forgotten about the place. I was off on that Thursday and headed right on down to National City.

8th and B 07

Same gameplan; I arrived right before opening and ordered a Medium Plate. I got asked if I'd like to add some Shrimp Tempura ($3) and I acquiesced.

8th and B 08

I probably should have passed on the shrimp as I saw it pulled from an air fryer.

This time I got the Spicy Garlic Ahi and the Shoyu Ahi.

8th and B 09  8th and B 10 As I walked back to the car, I realized I forgot to ask the folks the burning question about the place I had in mi cabeza. Sigh! Anyway, on this visit, the Spicy Garlic Ahi, wasn't particularly spicy, nor was it garlicky, at least to me. The fish was on the chewy side but decent. As with my previous visit the Ahi was swimming in sauce.

The shoyu Ahi was quite good, not overly sauced, nor excessively sweet, good texture, nice soy overtones, not too salty. Looks like I found a winnah!

8th and B 11

As for the shrimp, well, it hadn't held up well on the drive home. The shrimp was fairly small, though who would complain about $3 these days? It was soggy and really lacked seasoning.

8th and B 12

And so, I was ready for a post….until "FOY" Mar commented on Friday, just a day after my visit telling me that 8th and B had LauLau on Sundays! Ok…… Of course, I miss having good LauLau, so I waited and visited on a Sunday. And yes, there's a LauLau plate ($19), which comes with one scoop of poke.

8th and B 02b

I must say that I understand folks' confusion here, there's no indication of how much poke comes with each plate, nor does it say that the LauLau plate comes with poke…..I did ask and was told I had one choice. So far, my favorite had been the Shoyu Ahi so I went with that.

It was interesting to see a line forming, which stretched out the door when I exited. I guess weekends must be pretty busy here!

8th and B 14  8th and B 15 This time, I didn't forget that question, you see, that "fish mash" brought me back to a place that won the I love poke festival in OC in 2015. Yes, for a time we thought that Zarlitos had some of the best poke in San Diego. Sadly, they stopped serving poke around late 2018 or so.

I asked and was told that this was indeed the same folks. Ohh-kay! That fish mash; think of how the old school places used to take bone scraping and make spicy tuna; it's actually quite tender, not fishy, at least what this place makes….in fact, I asked not to have seaweed salad and they gave me an extra scoop of the fish mash.

The fish in the shoyu poke was quite tender on this visit, but was much more "sauced" and sweeter than before.

8th and B 16

As for the Lau Lau, as you can see, the Luau leaf was undercooked and fibrous. The meat was….well, as expected lacking the salted fish and pork fat.

8th and B 17

It was so lean, dry, and tasteless. I'll pass on this from now on.

But, that poke is pretty good; it's miles ahead of what I'd recently had at Poke Etc. So, if you enjoyed the poke that Zarlito's used to served, here's the remedy. Of course for me, HFS at Centerpark is still my go-to. But I'll definitely drop by 8th and B again if I'm in the area, if only to see what's going on.

8th and B 18

And for even more opinions….because I guess great minds think alike; please check out Denver's and Joy's posts on 8th and B!

And thanks to Jack and Mar for the reminders about 8th & B!

What would I do without our "FOYs"!

The Takeout Rotation – HFS at Centerpark Labs, Sue’s Korean Kitchen, and Tenkatori

Just clearing out the memory card here with some takeout revisits. Looking at my takeout "rotation" I quickly noticed a couple of consistencies in my choices. The places all open before 11. I get to work quite early in the morning and am not a big fan of crowds. So, if I can grab my lunch by 1030 or so, I'm happy. It seems like these places actually opened during the pandemic. And of course, it's not a far drive to any of these places for me.

So, here goes.

HFS at Centerpark Labs:

It's been a while since I'd done a post on HFS and I'd just got done making a final visit to Poke 8th and B recently (post upcoming). We had nice, almost late spring weather before the storm set in today; so it seemed like the perfect time to grab some poke from HFS.

HFS Again 01

I arrived five minutes before opening and got in and out in minutes.

HFS Again 02

Got the shoyu and the "Kilauea" which had some pretty good spice. This did hit the spot. Good quality fish, nutty brown rice……

Sue's Korean Kitchen:

Sue's has been a regular Kimchi Fried Rice spot for me since my first visit in spring of 2021. I was a bit surprised at how much the serving size seemed to have shrunk on my last visit, so I needed to return to check things out.

Sues Again 01

They always seem so happy to see me here and are so nice. Which is one of the reasons I keep returning.

Sues Again 02

So, how was it? Well, it seems that my previous visit was just an off-day as the portion size returned to what I had on previous visits.

Sues Again 03

Rice was a bit mushier than normal; but I enjoyed the spam, the fermented spiciness of the dish.

Tenkatori:

And last, but not least, yes yet another visit to Tenkatori. I've been a regular here since my first visits in spring of 2022. I always go at the 1030 opening time. That parking lot can be a horror show. I also will usually order when I arrive or call it in, ever since I noticed a $3 upcharge for online orders.

Tenka Again 01

Tenka Again 02

I had recently read Kat's post about getting tori nanban and was craving that. So, that's what I got.

Tenka Again 03

Whoa, the tartar sauce here is a bit too rich for my taste. I felt like I needed a shower after eating this!

Tenka Again 04

Yes, just like when I tried it before, there wasn't enough vinegar tones in this to cut all the richness. I gotta get back to Okan and see if I still enjoy their tori nanban.

On my next visit a couple of days later it was back to the same 'ol, same 'ol.

Tenka Again 05

Yes, I'll often go twice in a week!
