Mien Trung and 777 Noodle House Revisited

These days, I actually look forward to cooler weather as it gives me a opportunity to head on out and get some noodle dishes. Just in the last week as things cooled down I made two revisits of places I’ve posted on many times….so if you’re looking for something new; I’ll try to have something for tomorrow.

777 Noodle House Revisited:

I last visited 777 back in January and I thought it was time to head on back for my Hu Tieu Nam Vang Kho fix. There was a time when the folks working here would remember me….I used to go quite often back in 2014 – 2017, but after things slowed down during Covid, I’d only go maybe once a year to get my fix.

Things were quiet on this weekend morning and of course I went with my usual. The Hu Tieu Nam Vang Kho is now $13.97 which caught my attention. Returning home, I checked the price on my last visit in January and it was $11.97. Whoa, a $2 increase……

Well, beyond the price increase, this was an “interesting” visit….

There seems to be a lot more ground pork these days. The shrimp was plump with no off flavors. The blanched bean sprouts goes well with the sauce. Strangely, I ordered the Hu Tieu Nam Vang Kho, but got egg noodles instead? Well, the noodles were slightly springy, which I coat well mixing in the sauce with a chopsticks and spoon.

The pork hock has been on the smaller side for my last couple of visits, so I expected that.

Less edible parts as well. The soup was also loaded with msg this time; which was ok when mixed in with the noodles and sauce….but man, the raging thirst.

Well, as much as I have a sentimental attachment to 777…..this is my 30th post on the place! I’m not sure when I’ll return.

Mien Trung:

Another place that used to be on my “rotation”, though these days it seems that I visit maybe once a year. My last visit was all the way back in December of last year!

The place was doing a bustling take out business…pots of soup leaving the premises, when I arrived on this past Sunday morn. “Boo” the owner smiled and waved me to a table and asked me “bun bo hue, right”? Of course I’d come for my bun bo hue fix. Looking over the posted menu; it looks like the large BBH has gone up a dollar since my last visit. It’s now $13.95.

A rather overflowing plate of sprouts and veggies soon arrived.

And soon enough my scalding bowl of Bun Bo Hue arrived.

Man, the fragrance of this was so good! The soup was super hot which intensified the already spicy soup….perhaps I’m just getting wussy in my old age; but it seemed much spicier than I recalled!

I really enjoyed the broth; spicy, savory, hints of aromatic lemongrass……not overly salty as it would sometimes be.

An abundance of slippery noodles….I’m glad I wore a dark colored shirt to camouflage the “sprinkling of red dots” from my slurping.

For some reason, the look of the simmered pig’s feet cracked me up. You know why, right?

Loved the gelatinous skin and gnawing on that bone.

This really hit the spot! As I wiped the sweat from my brow and walked up to pay, Boo smiled and said “as soon as the weather cools down, I know I’ll see you here!” I guess I’m also getting predictable in my old age as well?

Circling Back to Mien Trung

Man, has it been a year since I last visited Mien Trung? Sheesh. Mien Trung had been a fairly regular stop since I first visited over 17 years ago! I always think about the late "Ed from Yuma" when I visit. It was always a favorite of his. Of course, much has happened over the years; "Mom" who made the soup "Dad" who ran the front of house have both retired. There have been times when the Bun Bo Hue just wasn't up to par. Still, over the last couple of visits, things seem to have been corrected. With the recent cold spell, I had been wanting some Bun Bo Hue and even the Missus, who stopped going when Mien Trung changed the noodles for Her beloved Bun Rieu and then She found that She enjoyed the Bun Rieu from Phuong Nga more. Well, She decided to come along to see how the Bun Rieu fared these days.

We dropped by at 10am on a Sunday for an early lunch and were the only folks in the place.

The Missus ordered a small Bun Rieu ($12).

Mien Trung 2024 02  Mien Trung 2024 03 Which the Missus didn't care for. The noodles used were those for the Bun Bo Hue, not the typical thin bun used for Bun Rieu. The broth lacked the crabby savoriness and mild sweet-acidity of tomato the Missus enjoys. It was fairly high in the MSG department. Other than the saltiness, it was quite bland.

While the plates of sprouts and veggies was large; we lamented the lack of banana blossom.

I guess I'll be heading back to Phuong Nga again soon?

My Bun Bo Hue (small $12.10) was perfectly fine.

Nice spice, assertive lemongrass tones, a hint of beefiness dancing on your tongue, perhaps a bit high in the MSG department, but quite savory. The rustic proteins like I'm used to. The noodles slippery and firm. I do lament the lack of banana blossom, but since I can't find a bowl of Bun Bo Hue I like more in San Diego, this will do fine.

Though it looks like I'll be back to doing solo visits here again.

Mien Trung Revisited

The recent cooler (by San Diego standards) weather had be craving some Bun Bo Hue. I decided to head on over to Mien Trung.

As always, the owner "Boo" greeted me as I entered and chided me for not having visited in a while. I didn't realize it at the time, but it had been over a year since my last visit! Whoa.

We had a nice chat and I ordered my usual; the Bun Bo Hue ($12), these days the small bowl will do fine by me.

MT Rev 03 MT Rev 04  The plate of sprouts, greens, and herbs were fresh, the bun slippery and nicely textured. For some reason, the broth seemed more spicy than usual; or perhaps I'm just getting wimpy in my old age. That combined with an assertive lemongrass flavor and singeing heat really set my lips on fire.

The rustic thick cuts of beef were full of bovine goodness and the pig's feet had a nice thick layer of skin. I'm not not the biggest fan of the crunchy tendon provided, but have gotten used to it over the years.

Bun Bo Hue From Da Nang Corner

The Missus wanted me to do an Uncle Tetsu run. So, I decided to grab some lunch to go in the process. I recalled thinking the Bun Bo Hue from Da Nang Corner wasn’t too bad when I last had it….oh my, a year ago! So, I parked on a side street, walked over to Da Nang Corner and placed my takeout order, then went over to grab the Missus’s cheesecake.

My order was ready when I returned and I headed home.

I immediately unpacked things when I got home.

Danang Corner 02 Danang Corner 03  I set about reheating the broth and moving the noodles and proteins to a proper bowl. One thing I noticed was that the broth really didn’t have that wonderful lemongrass-beefy fragrance of typical bun bo hue broth. Though I was prepared for the lack of banana blossom and such this time.

Once things were ready, I had lunch.

Danang Corner 05  Danang Corner 07  Well, that decent bowl of Bun Bo Hue I got from here might have been a fluke as this broth had no lemongrass flavor…..in fact, other than being terribly salty, it really lacked spice and beefiness. I used the whole container of mam tom and it was still bland.

I wish there were more veggies as the portion size seemed quite small.

The meatballs were tender and the rustic cut beef was fine, the beef shank was just bone and the tendon was way too rubbery this time around.

The Noodles had been cooked too much and were mushy. I only pour boiling water quickly over noodles to revive so I don’t think it was that action making the noodles mushy.

Bummer. Maybe I hit the lottery the last time as I thought the BBH was not bad. Or maybe that’s the norm and this was a “one-off”. I guess we’ll need to add possible consistency issues to the list as well.

What’s My Craving – Bun Bo Hue “at” Mien Trung

My lunch at Izakaya Sakura had me missing the "good 'ol days"….times when gas wasn't hitting seven bucks a gallon, when I wouldn't give a second thought to dining in, and all those places I used to frequent. I'd been craving the Bun Bo Hue from Mien Trung. I'd done takeout from Mien Trung a couple of times since the pandemic started, but for me; it just wasn't the same. With the recent cooler weather, I decided to head on down at around 9am and take a peek to see if they were busy.

MT Rev 02  MT Rev 03  The place was empty except for two "regulars" who were joking around (quite loudly) with Boo, the gentleman who has taken over running the place from his mom and dad.

He was quite pleased to see me actually sitting at a table that he came out and shook my hand, then chided me for not coming more often! After all; I'd been a regular customer here since 2006! Man, can you believe the Bun Bo Hue here used to be $4.99 back then? It's now $12; which in consideration of prices these days, I think is relatively reasonable.

Anyway, I placed my order….you know what I got, right? And Boo came over and we chatted about the last couple of years, how costs have gone crazy, and so forth.

MT Rev 04 MT Rev 05  When my Bun Bo Hue arrived he said "time to eat" and left me to enjoy my scalding, spicy bowl of Bun Bo Hue. It used to be that I'd have to add chili oil to my soup, but these days it's more than spicy enough. I think my tolerance has waned over the years. The veggies are added, I give things a good mix…….I love to track the change in texture to the veggies as the hot soup slowly works its magic. I do still add a bit on mam tom for that savory "kick".

For a few minutes everything seemed right in the world. Perhaps I should have worn a light colored shirt in honor of Ed from Yuma who would without fail always wear some light colored shirt when we ate here. He'd leave full and happy, with red specks all over his shirt; a badge of honor, perhaps? Well, maybe next time. As I'm pretty sure and hope that they'll be many "next times".

Takeout Revisits – Sizzling Pot King and Mien Trung

Man, this weather merry-go-round has been crazy. Last weekend, we had the hottest February day ever recorded in San Diego….and the Santa Ana's really messed up my sinuses. Even after temps came down and we had some rain (!?!), I was still feeling congested. So, we figured the best way to clear things up would be…..well, some fairly spicy food.

Starting with our old standby, the Dry Pot to go from Sizzling Pot King…..instead of the medium spicy, we went with spicy.

Well, like almost every place else prices at SPK have gone up. The Dry Pot Combo is now $38.99! Back in December of 2020 it was $32.99. Frozen Tofu is now $3.99, add to that one order of rice and we're getting close to fifty dollar country here…whoa.

Well, on the good side, the ma-la and spice helped clear me out…it doesn't look particularly spicy above….but I dug through and found 14 dried chilies.

It's getting kinda expensive and they've cut out using Chinese Cauliflower a while back….but this is basically two meals for us.

Still, this didn't quite do it for me…..and with the rather wet and cooler weather, I decided to do some takeout from Mien Trung. With the Missus now preferring the Bun Rieu from Phuong Nga, I really don't get over to MT quite as often as I used to. The really nice gentleman was working and man, he was just so happy to see me. We had a nice chat while I waited for my takeout order. He asked me how long I'd been coming to MT….he laughed when I told him over 15 years now!

Places like Mien Trung and Phuong Nga do so much takeout…..I remember how I used to see those pots of Bun Bo Hue waiting for pick-up….that they really know how to pack things.

And both places slightly undercook their noodles for takeout; so that pouring hot water over them during the prep separates and heats up the noodles perfectly.

MT Rev 02  MT Rev 03 As for how this was…..well, it as just what the doctor ordered. Good spice, wonderful herbaceous – sour tones from lemongrass…nice pungency…..this cleared me up!

I'm not sure if it was a case of not having had Bun Bo Hue from Mien Trung in a while; but I thought today's bowl was very good….the thick cuts of beef weren't overly chewy and the pork hock was quite tender.

I gotta get back more often.

It’s (kinda) Soup Weather – Takeout from Phuong Nga 2 and Mien Trung

Man, it's been a hot couple of months! We're somewhat happy with the cooler weather the last couple of days and took advantage of it by getting Bun Rieu, then Bun Bo Hue from our favorite places.

Phuong Nga 2:

After working on the Missus to try the Bun Rieu from Phuong Nga 2 for over two years, She finally gave in and we had it for three weekends in a row back in March – April of this year.

I dropped by Phuong Nga 2 and I was surprised to see no one lese waiting for anything. It looks like they are still doing takeout only.

Looking at the notice on the plexiglass partition, I noticed that the prices on most items have gone up by about a dollar. It as a short wait for our bun rieu, but soon enough I was back home, and heating up the broth. Of course I poured hot water over the noodles to warm up a separate.

Soup PN 02 Soup PN 03 Much like Bun Bo hue; because of the herbs and veggies, the broth needs to be super hot and you'll get a different texture in every bit as the steaming broth reacts with the crisp shredded banana blossom and morning glory. The bean sprouts adds a whole different texture as it cooks thru along with that mild grassy-almost pea like-nuttiness. The strong anise-citrus tones of the perilla leaves and a squeeze of lime adds a nice acidity, which helps cut through the savory broth which has been elevated with a dab of mam tom. I like the fact that the generous portion of noodles provided is a tad undercook as once it's heated with a pour of hot water, drained, then placed in the bowl it reaches prime texture.

Soup PN 04  Soup PN 05 The Missus really enjoys the fried tofu and tomato; I like the cha lua….we both enjoy the pork-seafood "cakes"; though it seemed to be a bit tougher than what we previously experienced. The Missus always eats both red chilies provided.

Mien Trung:

The first thing I actually wanted when the weather started cooling off was Mien Trung. Man, had it been almost a year-and-a-half since we last did takeout at the beginning of the pandemic?

And the gentleman who was at the counter seemed so happy to see me; he wasn't working during my last takeout visit…….it was great talking to him, he still remembers me from when I first started visiting back in 2006! Man, almost fifteen years now! MT is doing both dine in and takeout; but since it was rather early in the day, there was only one customer eating in the corner while I waited for my Bun Bo Hue.

And since MT specializes in catering and takeout (in the beginning, they only made their BBH for catering), everything was packed perfectly.

After going thru my typical reheating drill (related above), everything was ready.

Soup MT 02 Soup MT 03  Loved the slippery noodles; though the herbs and veggies didn't seem as fresh as usual. Nice savory-lemongrass tones from the broth; though it wasn't quite as spicy as I recall. The chili oil fixed that up nicely. The mam tom added deep savory tones and a couple of squeezes of lime balanced things out.

For some reason, I really enjoyed the thick cuts of beef as the flavor was so very deep and intense; the tendon softer than I recalled. Has time made my heart grow fonder?

I realize that I've done over 20 posts on Mien Trung over the last 15 years, but it's been one of those places that I never tire of. Once the weather starts getting a bit cooler or when we've returned from a long trip, MT often comes to mind when I get back home. Of course there have been ups and downs over the years; I think I've documented those. But, there have definitely been more ups than downs.

And of course while eating my bowl of BBH, I couldn't help but think of my good friend; the late "Ed from Yuma". We shared a few meals at Mien Trung and without fail he'd wear a lightly colored shirt which would end up dotted with specks of red from the annatto tinged broth! I couldn't help but wonder what Ed would think about the the state of the the US and the world during the pandemic. We miss you Ed!

Takeout From Da Nang Corner

Back in August; I noticed a shop named Da Nang Corner was opening up on Convoy and was quite happy to see the possibility of more regional Vietnamese cuisine being represented in the Convoy area. The shop opened during November and since around the middle of that month, I’ve managed three visits. I was really excited to try what I consider DaNang’s signature dish to be; Mi Quang. To be honest; I’ve never had a decent version of Mi Quang in San Diego. The now closed Mi Quang Mien Trung was a disappointment and other versions just weren’t very satisfying.

Da Nang Corner has an online ordering system, which I used on all three visits. Or at least tried to use. The first two times, they actually called me to confirm my order and I still had to wait for it when I arrived for pick-up. On the third visit, I got no confirmation call and no one had a clue about it when I arrived….the very nice young lady walked over and pulled my ticket out of the POS machine, so I just had to wait. I know grand opening jitters; but remember, this was over the space of almost 80 days.

Still, nice young ladies, the dining area is very clean and well set-up. I’ll definitely eat in when everything settles down…..whenever that may be.

Da Nang Corner 05 Da Nang Corner 07Things were nicely packed, the veggies and herbs were sparkling fresh, I loved that there was a good amount of shredded banana blossom as I really enjoy the texture it adds to various soups and it tends to absorb flavors quite well.

There was more soup than I’m used to for Mi Quang, which while on the salty side had a nice tongue coating finish to it. It wasn’t deeply complex, but pretty darn good….with nice savory tones and a hint of sweetness.

Da Nang Corner 08 Da Nang Corner 09The rest of the dish was somewhat problematic. The noodles were unevenly prepared and many of the noodles were broken into small pieces. Some of the pieces were mushy, some were super hard, barely cooked, just not good eats.

The chicken was strangely bland and also on the dry side, like all the flavor had been boiled out of it even though it was dark meat, go figure. The boiled egg was overcooked with that purple ring around the yolk….a true sign it had been boiled too long.

Now, once we’re over the pandemic, I’m going to order this to dine in and am hoping all of these issues will be remedied.

I took a gander at the menu at Da Nang Corner to figure out what to try next……and two items got my attention; and no, it wasn’t the pho……perhaps someday, but not in my top ten of items to try at a place with Danang in the name. I decided to try the Com Ga Hoi An ($10.50)….Hoi An’s famous chicken and rice dish.

This was during the time before the last lockdown when outdoor dining was allowed….but of course I got my order to go. Ordered online, got a call back during my drive over to the restaurant and there was another ten minute wait after I arrived to get my food.

Da Nang Corner 11 Da Nang Corner 13Now in typical Hoi An Chicken Rice the rice is cooked with turmeric; giving the rice, much like the mi quang a vibrant yellow color. It should also be cooked with chicken broth and fat……but in this case, there was barely any chicken flavor and the rice was really hard as well. The chicken was a bit chewy but that’s to be expected, the sauce was a bit too sweet, I prefer mine to have a bit more acidity, but it wasn’t bad, though there was a distinct shortage of chicken. Loved the herbs in the dish though. The nuoc mam cham was way too sweet as well.

This isn’t something I’ll order again.

During this visit; I asked the young lady working what I should order and was told that the Bun Bo Hue was really good. I asked her if it was as good as Mien Trung and her expression changed, she gave me a shrug; not exactly the seal of approval, but I decided to try the Bun Bo Hue ($12.75). This was after all outdoor dining had been shutdown, I placed an online order, though this time I didn’t receive a confirmation phone call. When I arrived, I walked to the counter and said I had placed an online order receiving a blank stare…..the young lady then walked to the printer and guess what? There was my order….oh well; it’s still “grand opening”, right?

Once my order was ready, I took my package to the car and returned home, not thinking this was going to be any good……though I would be proven wrong.

I did reheat the broth for this and once put together it looked, and smelled quite good.

Da Nang Corner 15 Da Nang Corner 17First off, while I wished there were more veggies and herbs (especially banana blossom), what was provided was fine.

Second, the noodles were perfectly prepared, good texture, nice and slippery.

Third, the broth was good, perhaps a bit too much MSG, but heck, even Mien Trung goes a bit far at times. But the broth had a mild beefiness, decent spice, and while I think it could have used more lemongrass, that was still acceptable….there was a nice mild spice as well. The cilantro and onions added just a touch of pungency to help move the flavors forward.

Da Nang Corner 18 Da Nang Corner 16In addition to the well prepared beef shank and tendon (better than MT I think), there was a nice and tender meatball like you’d find in Bun Rieu. The only item that was not prepared well was the pork hock which was too tough and rubbery and needed more cooking time. Other than that, I’d say this was way better than typical “pho shop Bun Bo Hue” you’ll find in the area and not a bad alternative to Mien Trung in my opinion.

I’ll definitely have this again….hopefully this wasn’t just a day I hit the lottery.

I’m hoping Da Nang Corner does well and keeps improving. Time will tell…..as I’m not just happy “to have something” available, my hope is that the next bowl of Mi Quang will be much better and that Bun Bo Hue wasn’t just a visit on a “good day”.

Covid-19 Takeout – Mien Trung

Or maybe I should call it SARS-CoV-2; which is the name of the virus that causes Covid-19, which is the disease caused by the virus….well, enough of that. Covid - Mien Trung 02

This past Saturday, I finished up my work by 10 and needed to hit up Carnival Market on the way home for some groceries. The Missus was busy at work and I'd be making dinner, so I wanted something for an early lunch. It suddenly dawned on me that Mien Trung is right down the street. When I've eaten at Mien Trung; I have never failed to notice the bags and pots of take-out stacked up for pick up. I guess it was my turn. I called in my order for Bun Bo Hue and drove the few blocks over after shopping; waltzed in, paid, got my order, and sauntered out the door in less than two minutes.

Things were packed nicely; man, they wrapped up the herbs and veggies in a tight bundle. It practically exploded as I started to unwrap it.

I liked the fact that they included some pretty spicy chili oil and mam tom; which added a nice funky-umami layer to my Bun Bo Hue.

Lots of lemongrass tones and this was pretty spicy……not too heavy handed in terms of MSG, a nice squeeze of lime added some balance to the broth. The noodles were firm and slippery….I made sure to wear a dark t-short while eating this to avoid the dreaded "red dot syndrome".

Needless to say; it did "hit the spot"…..right between the eyes; especially since the weather, while decent on this day, had been pretty wet and cold (by San Diego standards) than usual over the week.

Soup Weather, the Old Standbys Episode – Mien Trung and Santouka. Plus, a Little Quiz at the End

Well, that spot of warm weather didn't last very long, did it? To be perfectly honest; I enjoy cooler weather since it means I can hit up my old standbys. Like these two. I'll keep the post short; cause I've done so many posts on these two places.

Ok, I think I have at least a dozen posts on Mien Trung…..going way back to 2006! They seemed to have hit a rough spot for a while; but this last bowl was the best I've had in a while.

The Bun Bo Hue really hit the spot; the broth didn't have too much msg, there was a decent spice, nice lemongrass tones; the noodles were cooked to a perfect slipperiness. And to add to the joy of a nice bowl of bun bo hue; I got little red dots all over my shirt…..oh well, it was definitely worth it.

Funny thing; my first visit to Sanoutka when they first opened in San Diego in 2008 was auspicious. But over the years they've righted the ship and is a favorite of the Missus……let me beat that dead horse again; to the point that the Missus just had to visit the flagship shop in Asahikawa…in winter!

Shio Ramen Toroniku Style - Santouka

The funniest thing to the Missus is; that "even in Japan, Santouka's boiled eggs are terrible…." So there's some consistency for ya'. For us; it the Shio Toroniku style all the way. Rich, hot tonkotsu broth; noodles with a good chewy-crunch to them, pork cheek that tastes great with a short dunk in the broth……

Boy do I miss this place…..

Now here's one that lasted for even a shorter time….but man, we really enjoyed the place when it was around.
