mmm-yoso!!! a food blog with photos, descriptions and observations about meals, condiments and other things a few of us want to write about. Feel free to read about our adventures. Today, Cathy is writing. Kirk is on vacation. If you want to know where He and His Missus are, here's a clue: Since April 21, I have not done any post with cuisine from the country they are visiting.
Hi again. A few weeks ago, I found a parking spot in the Crab Hut /Crepe World /Shabu Shabu House / Yogurt World/Tapioca Express/Tofu House /O'Brien's parking lot and was happy. This mostly food mall area may be referred to as 'The Parking Lot From Hell' by most of you, since more than 75% of the businesses here are restaurants(8 I can think of) with seating capacities for at least 20 inside each. I had to decide what I wanted to eat.
B.H. Chung's won. A Korean BBQ and Japanese restaurant, I have found the food here always to be very well made, tasty and filling. In addition, it could fulfill two cravings at one meal.
So we ordered. Japanese items. Still, we were served panchan.
the mildest, shredded daikon in front. The bean sprouts in back had a nice red pepper kick. The bamboo on the right had jalapeño/green hot chiles. (The far left is the dipping sauce for our tempura appetizer).
Vegetable Tempura ($7.99). Lightly breaded, crispy fried and drained vegetables- onions, squash, carrots, green and red pepper and broccoli.
The Mister ordered the Katsu Fish plate ($8.99). The pieces of fish were standard cuts from frozen, again lightly breaded and fried-the fish itself was a nice flavor and flaky. The rice was good and the salad dressing was house made. The tempura dipping sauce was not sweet and may have been house made. It was not disappointing, but not a "wow". However…
I wanted cold noodles. Hiyashi. I ordered Hiyashi Soba ($8.99). This is what I got. Fresh cooked, really good soba. In broth. Cold broth. See the ice cube?
This was *really* good and nothing like I had ever had before. The broth was rich, did not taste watered down, the noodles were excellent. Just the carrots, onions and bean sprouts, as you can see. Sesame oil definitely in the broth…the half hard boiled egg, no meat. Wonderfully unexpected and really good and filling.
Everything was unexpected and good, if not great.

It’s been awhile since I’ve been to this place – so long that I’ve forgotten what I hadate. There’s so many food options in this strip mall – have you tried the shabu shabu place?
Parking lot from hell is right – even if I see open parking spaces, I usually just park on the street. The layout is horrid.
I hate that parking lot. Hate it. HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE IT! But there’s enough in that shopping mall to overcome the hate…
Ack! “so long that I’ve forgotten what I hadate.” I hit Send before I finished changing “ate” to “had”.
I just added the link to Kirk’s post about Shabu Shabu, Sandy. I haven’t been there yet. Soon.
I know what you mean, Rosa. Even if you do get a spot, it is horrid when you are ready to leave and the vultures are waiting for your space.
I was thinking had, then ate, then hate, then some new Scrabble multi point word, Sandy…:)
I’ve always wondered about this place. The fish katsu has a vague resemblence to the fish in McD’s fish fillet sandwich. 🙂
hi cathy
ha – that IS indeed the parking lot from $%$@!!!!
One of my friends told me there’s a new Vietnamese all you can eat place across the street from Crab hut. Did you see it? He said it’s called “Phat”.
BH Chung – I wonder if it’s a play on PF Chang!?
Cathy your clues is unforgiving…
Antarctica? Interesting combo restaurant.
You’ve never gone here Carol? It’s always been pretty good, in each incarnation. I was fascinated with the bowl of soup Hiyashi. The other katsu’s are good- the frying is correct- but the Filet-O-Fish thing was odd.
Hi, cc- Kirk did do a post on Phat when itt first opened and had the added “Chicken Delight” name: /2009/08/31/phat-restaurant-chicken-delight-a-first-look/ Which apparently did not go over well. I saw it is now AYCE, but the price was $15 or $17 per person and I usually pay with cash and haven’t tried it yet.
It’s actually pretty simple, Bill. I crave that type of food, it is everywhere around here and I have gone but not posted during this vacation on any of those type restaurants…I have posted on that type of cusine before, as have Kirk (many times) and even ed.
so, Cathy’s holding down the fort. I’ve never seen a katsu fish plate using frozen pieces of fish.
I’m trying to at least keep people coming back to see what kind of stuff I’m eating while Kirk is feasting, Ron. …yeah… Mrs. Paul’s katsu… along with cold soup. A very unexpected meal
wow, I’d have a hard time deciding where to eat – that restaurant row sounds fantastic. I love that Japanese/Korean hybridity, extra kick from the side dishes is a good thing!
You’ve never been there, FH? It’s always crowded and I know Kirk just parks on a sidestreet and walks. I know I’ll find something I am craving when I finally get there…The food at BFC is pretty good.
thanks cathy! i’ll check that “phat” post!
Thanks for the post! I think we will try this place out this weekend. 🙂
I’m trying to keep the blog interesting, Lori. So glad I stopped, ate and photographed. Good luck finding a parking spot!
