Where in the world are we?

So where the heck are we this time?

After visiting Turkey and the Greek Islands two years in a row, we needed a change of pace. Myanmar, Laos, and Yunnan beckoned but after having some sausages the Missus made up Her mind. I threw in another location and we added another as sort of a hub.

Our first stop is a lovely city with warm and friendly people, tons of history, bright colors…..oh, and lots of hills. My calves were killing me for the first two days.

History runs deep here. People talk in terms of centuries. Do the photos give you a clue yet?

Plus, you gotta love the food here. At it's best are items like a simple pork sandwich…..for breakfast.

Eaten standing up, along with a beer. Man, this was good.

And who wouldn't want a some suckling pig? Crisp skin, moist, flavorful. And for breakfast too!!! All washed down with a glass of beer…..for breakfast! Well, all that pork and beer…..we're obviously not in a Muslim Country.

All that hearty and heart stopping food doesn't mean that this city can't pull off Michelin Star quality when it wants too.

Still, it seems that the cuisine here is at it's best in more simple forms.

The reach of this nation once spanned the globe. There are dishes that you'll find as standards on menus around the world that started here……

And in the grand churches, cathedrals, and monasteries…..

Though more modern expression is used almost everywhere as well.

I think you've figured out where we're at, right?

I think I'll leave you with a version of that nice sausage that got us started.

And a couple of other photos as well.

Thanks for reading!

  1. Portugal – If you have time I highly recommend going up north the coast towards, Peniche, Figueira da Foz, Aveiro and Porto. For a very different take on Portugal try also to go inland to Coimbra and Guarda

  2. Heh those egg custard tarts look familiar! Reminds me that I haven’t had dim sum in a few weeks.

  3. I was in lisbon a few yeas ago – if it’s still around, check out solar dos presuntos for dinner. Still think about the amazing meal I had there.

  4. Lisbon! I backpacked through Portugal for two weeks in 1992 and loved it. Coimbra was my favorite city, though the rock formations at Praia da Rocha on the Algarve are gorgeous. Bom dia!

  5. There’s a Michelin starred place up the coast around Guincho.
Along the way, Estoril and Cascais are two nice stops from Cais dos Sodre, Estoril especially, if you get a dim sum craving. Two things I can never not have when I’m in the Lisbon area are the grilled squid and clams.
The Piri-Piri chicken at the Jardim de Frango is also always good.

  6. Hi Mike – You won’t believe how many pastel de nata the Missus had in just a couple of days!
Hi TFOJ – thanks for the recs. Of course our basic itin has been planned for months, though we are hitting a couple of places you mentioned.
Hi MrZ – Funny thing is that the Missus actually doesn’t care for those, but can’t get enough of it here.
Hi CC – Thisi is a great place to visit.
Hi Kirbie – I thought it would be.
Hi Jamie – I believe it’s still around, though we’ve moved on from Lisbon.
Obrigado James! We’re headed up to Coimbra shortly.
The clams are quite tasty Peter, though I’m less enamored with the frango assado.

  7. You’re not the first person to say something like that about the chicken. I was living in Lisbon for a summer when I was younger and I have very good memories of fresh grilled chicken soaked in the Piri-Piri sauce/oil, wrapped up for take out and it was good.
It wasn’t crispy anymore but the flavour of the sauce/oil had time to work into the chicken during transit and it remains my best grilled chicken memory.
I should say that going back a couple of years ago and having it fresh on the premises, it didn’t quite match the memory so I don’t know if it really is just er, rose favoured taste buds as it were.
Did you make it to Sintra?

  8. Hi Peter – it could have just been an off meal, but we really weren’t impressed. Sintra will be at the tail end of our trip! Thanks for reading.
Hi Jan – I figured this one would be easy……
