The 2008 San Diego County Fair- Part One: Before the Fairgrounds open

Hi.  This post was written before the County Fair will open on Saturday June 14.  The Theme of the Fair was chosen about eleven months ago and for this year it is "Summer of Sports" and dates for deadlines to bring entries to the Fair are set -so that everything will be in place when people walk in the gate on opening day.  Not only will things be in place, but awards have been awarded and ribbons are on everything. You might recall my little little  three part blogging of the Fair last year.  One thing I mentioned (and continue to mention, even to complete strangers in grocery checkout lines) is that the preserved foods are "the heart of the Fair" to me…Preserved foods and Home Arts in general are *the reason* we have a County Fair- why almost every county in the US has a Fair.  The San Diego County Fair is the fifth most attended County Fair in the USA.  If we did not have Home and Hobby, a Student Showcase and Kids Best, the Fair would just be rides, carnival games and a giant Swap Meet sale…oh and wonderfully unusual foods(which will be blogged about in Part Two).Sdcountyfair08_006

Some of the vendors were in place, since they have no place else to be.  But the Fairgrounds were not really set up when I was there…the Saturday after Memorial Day, when the Preserved Foods were judged.  Sdcountyfair08_009

These were the entries.  The table in the forefront is where two judges, along with their own "secretary" and "runner" sit. There were a total of six judges. You can see the judges have crackers, lemon slices and water as their palate cleansers- the basket is filled with disposable forks and spoons.Sdcountyfair08_010

Here is another view.  The entries are set up in Divisions and Categories. The labels with the contestant’s names are folded over, so the judging is "blind". Underneath each entry is the recipe the entrant followed. One of the things the judges look for is that the preserved foods were…um… properly preserved.

Sdcountyfair08_012 As a small example, in this Division 3209 of Relishes and Sauces.  The judges had to judge 7 different barbecue sauces, 12 chutneys, 8 mixed relishes, 7 canned salsas and these 5 "other than listed" relishes and sauces.

After reading the label listing dates and type of canning method and seeing that the item in question was preserved properly, as well as the recipe the entrant has provided,  the judge will open each canned item, being certain to hear the "whoosh" sound of a good vacuum seal.  They then check that enough "head room" was used in the preserving process. Usually then the judge will smell the item and then insert a fork or spoon, to check consistency, spoon some out and either taste then, or do the same above steps with each item and then begin tasting.  A lot of wasted calories and possible illness can be eliminated before tasting.  Sdcountyfair08_013

I took a photo of this beautiful rose petal jelly, which, unfortunately was kind of liquidy and not properly jelled, but looked so very pretty in the jar.  Apparently it also tasted quite nice, but when a judge has 12 different jellies to try and one isn’t properly prepared, it is sadly eliminated from getting or even being considered for a ribbon. 

Despite your thinking that it must be exciting and fun to judge jams, jellies, preserves and conserves…well, it kind of isn’t.  These judges have to sit down and eat sugar based products for a good three to four hours in a row.  Think about it.  Even if you are a chocoholic and think you could eat chocolates all day every day…really-four hours straight?  The judges basically eat no carbohydrates for one or two days before they have to judge, so the sugar rush won’t adversely affect them.  One judge who I spoke to told me she eats no carbs for two days prior and loads up on meat and cheese for breakfast before driving to the Fairgrounds.  Still, she gets kind of shaky and on a sugar high for hours after she gets home, and then crashes the next day. Sdcountyfair08_011   The Strawberry Jam category this year had 27 entries.  That poor judge had to not only find the best of all of them…but had to taste and re-taste so many jams just of that flavor to determine the best…of 27.

These were some of many entries in the  "other than listed, miscellaneous" division.  See the  Thai Hot and Sweet dipping sauce-2nd from the right?  That is chopped garlic on the bottom, hot chilis in the top layer and a nice sweet oil in between.  Mix it up, put it on a cracker, and you have the Best of Show winner.Sdcountyfair08_008

You can see more details of dates and times of the fair on the website.  I try to go in as soon it opens in the morning, and park in one of the free lots.  Transportation on school buses and a few Double Decker buses is provided every 15 minutes or so; also free.  Parking this year is $9.

Oggi’s- a local chain- Beer, pizza, salads, burgers, sandwiches,televisions

Hi again.  I was getting ready to start this post and realized just how predictable I am, based on what The Mister and I ordered here. But anyhow, it is what we eat when we come to this San Diego based Sports Bar, Oggi’s (pronounced Oh-jeez).  Oggis_001   

First, we always order a sampler of the beers brewed here.  $7 for seven five ounce glasses. (bottom left, going up- Hefe, Pale Ale, Amber, Gold..bottom right going up-IPA, Scottish and Stout).  Supposedly people get the sampler and then order a pint of whatever they like best.  I never can decide and each beer has its own distinctive qualities.  I just enjoy my sips and share with The Mister and then drink water. We always order a salad, and The Mister chooses.  This time it was the Balsamic Chicken ($9.50) quite large, with warm chicken breast strips, candied walnuts, feta cheese and a delightful basil balsamic dressing, served with one breadstick.  I know I could never eat this portion by myself. Then I order what I always order, the "make your own" calzone ($7.95).  Just three cheeses inside- a sweet, fresh ricotta, very nice, fresh and stringy when melted mozzarella and Fontina.  These are surrounded by a fresh made dough that is slightly sweet and baked properly. Oggis_006By properly, I mean it is crispy and chewy and not mushy, even with fillings. 

Here is a cross section of my half, with some fresh made, very nice, fresh tomato based marinara sauce and the side of sweet pepper and pickle that accompanies. We won’t discuss why they give you a pickle.  They just do.

Oggis_004 Of course, it is a "make your own" calzone, yet The Mister just does not want any anchovies invading his half of the calzone, so I just ask for them on the side ($1.25).  Heh heh…

Oggi’s has many television sets set to various sporting events inside and outside the restaurant.  The food is always very fresh and tasty.  There are many locations in Southern California and Arizona.

Pho SuperBowl-in La Mesa

Hello again.  Cathy here.  Hope everyone is doing well.  Yes, this will be a post about Vietnamese food…but food you can eat right here in San Diego! OK-East County of San Diego.  Closer to where I live.

Dsc01692If you live in La Mesa, you know where On Cue Billiards is- on Parkway Drive-the feeder road (parallel to) for Fletcher Parkway at Jackson (NW corner basically).  I haven’t been in that parking lot for a long time and one day The Mister and I were driving by and saw a "Grand Opening" sign.  We had to stop, even though we were not too hungry.  The Mister got a small bowl of Pho Tai($4.95).  (The SuperBowl size is $5.50).  Excellent, deep flavored, not too oily broth, fresh fresh flavors.    The meat was very tender and flavorful.

Dsc01693I ordered the Bun Cha Gio ($5.95-my bowl is the "SuperBowl" size, by the way) Excellent, fresh rice noodles-not in a clump. Fresh sliced lettuce, mint, carrots and cucumber, whole unsalted peanutsDsc01694 and *really* fresh bean sprouts, topped with four cut up Vietnamese egg rolls- which are all meat/no filler (the appetizer serving of five of these egg rolls is $5.95)

At the end of our meal, the owner brought us two small bowls of warm "coconut pudding". It isn’t a pudding texture, but it *is* made with wonderfully flavored coconut milk. Dsc01695_2

The menu only has 48 items, six of which are "kids meals" (pho tai is only $3.95 for I guess a smaller serving).  If you enter on the right hand door, that area is mainly used for to go orders and seating to wait for those orders.  There is a brisk take out business and a plethora of beverages, all served in ‘to go’ cups.  Boba drinks, smoothies, fusion and fresh teas, fresh coffee and lattes, frozen yogurt, milk shakes and "Joy", which is ice blended with fruit, flavoring and water.  There are various sizes available and prices range from $1.25 for hot coffee to $3.70 for a 20 ounce smoothie.

I have heard they have free wifi here, but have not checked that out for myself. Yet.

Hi.  A few months ago, I told you The Mister and I got a gift card for Mimi’s, and we went there for a late dinner.  I had heard about the breakfasts being good here, and a few comments back to me were complimentary of the breakfasts.  Well, you know, there was still some money left on that gift card and all…

Dsc01686 All of the breakfasts come with a choice of juice- I got tomato and The Mister got grapefruit (we have a Toccara blood orange tree in our backyard and have all the OJ we could ever want) and his breakfast also came with a choice of muffin. This one is blueberry and is low fat- they use applesauce instead of oil in making it. The taste was full and rich and I would not have known it was made without fat if I had not been told. Oh,it was also served warm….mmmm. Dsc01687_3 The rest of The Mister’s breakfast. The Shrimp Artichoke Feta omelet ($8.59)- A "Seasonal Special" (the menu here adds some seasonal items every 6 weeks or so-appetizers,  entree salad, entrees, dessert and breakfasts, as well as a seasonal muffin) A three egg omelet stuffed with diced shrimp, artichoke hearts and feta cheese.  Topped with feta cheese, too. My breakfast…The "Pain Perdu"… two poached eggs, nice, thick, crispy cooked, very flavorful bacon and the red skinned potatoes…and of course, the Pain Perdu.

All in all, a wonderful breakfast.  Including coffee, before tip, this meal was about $22, and very much worth it.  Very fresh, high quality ingredients.

Another event. With food. At Nordstrom

mmm-yoso!!! is just a humble blog.   We talk about what we ate and where we ate it and maybe what it cost.  We tell you if we liked it or not.   Today, Cathy is talking about what she ate…the food was free, but the ancillary costs…oh my!

Hi again.  Yes, Nordstrom has had its "spring event".   My friend was invited and asked me to tag along.  Of course I did, with my camera in one pocket…and credit card in the other pocket.  You remember the last ‘event’ I went to, right? 

In general,  Nordstrom is a high end clothing and accessory store which rewards its best customers by closing the doors and allowing only the best (i.e. big spenders) ones to attend these twice a year happenings, (close to the Christmas holidays and Mother’s Day), for easy shopping while serving adult beverages and fancy snacks.  On a ‘regular’ shopping day, you can eat at the Nordstrom Cafe inside the store.  These ‘events’ are catered.

Dsc01713 I really got all of my purchases into this one bag, since silk does not take up much space when folded or thrown on the floor…and I ate a lot of goodies in between making those purchases. Dsc01707 I started out the evening with a melon martini- a sip already taken before the photo… The server told me it wasDsc01709 vodka with melon liqueur and you can see, a melon ball was in the glass.  Very refreshing.

Then I moved on with a miniature barbecue chicken miniature mini teensy slider..which was unusually tasty. (The napkin it is placed on is 4 inches square).

Dsc01711 This was followed by a polenta puff topped with ancho chili sauce.

Dsc01710The ‘Asian chicken’ filled pocket was extremely tasty- ground chicken mixed with a taste of green onions, garlic and ginger made this moist delicate pocket an almost hearty snack .

Dsc01708By far, my most memorable and favorite tasting food of the night was the orzo pasta, with Kalmata olives, cherry tomato halves (richly flavored cherry tomatoes, I might add), artichoke hearts, with a lemon oregano dressing and topped with crispy feta cheese bits. Dsc01715

There was supposedly a S’mores dessert, but I never saw it being handed out. I don’t crave chocolate, but I do like marshmallow, so I was a bit disappointed, however I managed to get to the Godiva shop and bought a serving (four) of the candied orange peels dipped in dark chocolate ($2.25) to bring home to The Mister. The store holds these events twice a year and I can’t wait for the next one in December.

Sultan Schawarma-Excellent Eating Downtown

Greetings and I hope all of you are having a nice day. 

One day late last year I was walking on Market Street downtown and decided to go South on Fourth Avenue, to see if anything new had shown up.  I saw this:

Dsc01701Literally a hole in the wall in the middle of a bunch of many (and more expensive) restaurants… Dsc01700It looks like this through the front window. When it is open, the spits on your right are filled with cones of layers of beef and chicken schawarma, which were marinated overnight in yogurt, lemon juice and garlic (along with salt, pepper and I believe some sort of red pepper or pepper sauce) topped with a large whole onion and tomato… Dsc01674 Dsc01675As you can see, the menu is short, simple and straightforward. Oh, the food here is great. Always fresh. I come here kind of regularly and so took some surreptitious photos of a few items.  There are three tables out front and seating for 14 inside.  People rearrange the tables in the back to suit the situation.

Dsc01668The beef schawarma sandwich. ($5.95-as are all of the sandwiches)(the side of fries is $1.95). Juicy, tender deeply flavored, thinly sliced beef that was cooked on the spit in front a direct heat source (in other countries, the meat is cooked on the spit in front of an open flame.  San Diego has all sorts of ‘laws’ disallowing such craziness inside of buildings) for hours. Served simply on freshly warmed flat bread, with lettuce, raw onion and tomato… Dsc01670and all the sandwiches are served with the optional add-ins of sliced pickle, banana pepper, pickled turnip and two olives. Dsc01672I have particular cravings for the chicken schawarma as of late. The chicken is always plentiful and very juicy and has just the right spices for my taste. Dsc01542The kefta kabob is sometimes on my craving list also and is a delightful mix of ground beef and spices (parsley, cilantro,onion, cumin, paprika, salt and pepper).  If you get the kebab later in the day, though, sometimes it is dry…so I ask for a side of hummus (1.95-fresh made and comes with flat bread) to complete this sandwich…(and instead of fries, of course).  I must say the sandwiches here do not *need* any sauce added- when the meat is sliced off the spit, it falls into the juices that were rendered and that flavor, along with the tenderness the juice gives to the meat, is perfect.

If you happen to come here when the soup of the Day is lentil, get it. It is *absolutely* the most wonderful homemade soup *ever*…it does cost $3.50 and is worth it. Oh, and get the hot tea ($1.25) as your beverage- ask for it to be made strong-the flavor absolutely matches the food…the only other beverages offered are in cans and bottles.

The place is owned and run by a very nice Iraqi family, who seem a bit guarded in keeping things private- in that , they bring you the food and then don’t ask you “how are you doing?” and stuff like that.  If you need something, you do have to ask.  Just know they are willing to accommodate you and are very nice. Dsc01673 If you are just walking on the sidewalk, you might miss it.  Here is what it looks like up close.

The hours on the door state they are open until 3 a.m., but that is usually when there is an event downtown, or the Padres are playing…I have seen it closed at 10 p.m….and since I believe the Padres are mathematically eliminated, the Fair Weather Fans who usually would hang around late are not hanging around downtown. Come here early in the day. You will like it.

Hello.   I decided to actually write about one of my even more bizarre food secrets- the $5 pizza.   It seems that every pizza place is offering one- usually somewhat pre-made and includes one topping.

Little Caesars started out in Detroit, along with Dominoes.  I grew up in Detroit.  Those two were my pizza "standards" long before I discovered the really good stuff in Italy.  So this is more or less a "comfort food" for me.

I know some people don’t like the pizza from here, but the dough is fresh made daily and yeasty (and not that pre-made with holes punched in it refrigerated stuff), which is kind of a requirement for me to like the bready part of any meal.  The cheese is always fresh and never frozen, as other pizza chains use. I do not crave the pizza/dipping sauce from here because the herbs overpower the tomato flavor, but I know people who love it and crave it.

The pizzas at Little Caesars are usually pre- made and hot and waiting, especially around dinner time or around the time Monday Night Football is on TV.  They have a timer so you don’t get an "old" one.  I think the time limit is 10 minutes before the pizza has to be disposed of/not allowed to be sold, although I have seen the timer set to 7 minutes at one location.

You can order for $4, an "Italian Cheese Bread" Dsc01660, which is the pizza dough squared and topped with only cheese and Italian herbs.  You have to wait for this to be baked, so you can also ask for your $5 pizza to be made with a different one item topping.  I sometimes get mushrooms and sometimes I get a cheese pie.  I do ask that they make the cheese pie "well done" so the cheese is melted and browned.  I figure I am waiting anyhow…

It is not bad nor expensive if you need something quick, and it does reheat in the toaster oven in the morning.

Ali Baba Kebab House Family Restaurant- in El Cajon

mmm-yoso!!! is the blog, with the main role of Blogger played by Kirk, however while He and His Missus are on vacation, the part of Kirk will be played by Cathy.

Hi.  Cathy again.   I wanted to share this wonderful restaurant with you.  On the corner of Main and Avocado in El Cajon, near the Courthouse, for about three years now, Ali Baba has been in business.

Dsc01588 It used to be Top Sirloin, which had great food, but a very, very tacky ‘decor’.  The interior has been transformed to look like the interior of an Arabian King’s tent.  Fabric on the ceiling and walls.  Rich, deep colors.

Then there is the food.  Wonderful and fresh.

We started this meal with hot tea ($1) and "Ali Baba Blood Juice" ($1.50) Dsc01582, because, you know, we had to.   The ‘blood juice’ is a sweet (corn syrup added) iced tea fruit (maybe pomegranate?) blend mix.  It is refreshing in the summer especially.  I like the minty hot tea myself. Dsc01583We started out with the small Hommus appetizer ($5), served with two pieces of *large* (about 10 inches in diameter- this perception view is slightly askew) fresh, hot baked bread.  The hommus is made fresh and the portion size is quite large (the plate is deep).  The large size ($8) is served on a platter and is a wonderful portion to share.   

We also got the small Ali Baba salad($5), which came out looking like this,

But as you can see, the rest of the salad was Persian cucumbers, which are seen more in this photo, on the bottom of the plate.   It is very refreshing and is more like the salads I grew up eating-no lettuce.Dsc01585 

I ordered a shawarma sandDsc01586wich ($6).  This photo doesn’t do the size of it justice- I could only finish half.  As wide as a soda pop can and much larger than one with the sandwich uncut.  Those are pickled turnips on the side and inside the sandwich.  The beef is *excellent*, moist and fully flavored.  The bread is, again, fresh made. 

The Mister ordered a lamb kebab plate  ($9.95) ground lamb mixed with onions and spices and grilled over charcoal.  It is served with  tomatoes, parsley, pickled turnips, onions and fresh baked bread.  More than enough food.   Wonderful, fresh food!

All the prices are $1 less if you get the food "to go" instead of eating inside.   The service is friendly and helpful and there are always large family groups eating inside.

If you live in or are near the East County, you should try it.   You will like it.

Pat and Oscar’s-and what Cathy always orders

Hello once more. I'm still here blogging and Kirk and His Missus are still enjoying their adventures in Vietnam. I did get an email from him when he was going to be away from the internet for a few days. They are enjoying their vacation immensely and you'll get to see all about it in due time. Dsc01550 Dsc01551   SO ANYHOW…There is a local "chain" here in San Diego, called "Pat and Oscars".  It is semi self serve in that you order, pay, grab plates/silverware/napkins, seat yourself and then have the food delivered to your table.  You can put together a bunch of tables for a large gathering and the prices are reasonable, especially for groups. You can see their menu on line at www.Breadstick.com.  They make a variety of items, yet after trying everything from the menu over the years, The Mister and I end up ordering the same thing.  Always. 

The chicken meal for two ($16.99).  It includes a choice of a Cesar or Greek salad.  I always choose Greek.  You can see it has onions, beets, green pepper slices, feta and olives.  I really crave this salad.

The meal also includes an order of 12 breadsticks- fresh made, topped with olive oil and a touch of garlic flavor.  {The website address is breadstick.com: Pat and Oscar's are *known* for their breadsticks.  Sometimes if the line to order is long, they are passing out samples to those waiting: sometimes they had out breadsticks to people in front of the restaurant…it is *the* reason a lot of people eat here. }   

Of course, included is a whole rotissiere cooked chicken- either Lemon or BBQ.

You can see The Mister makes open faced sandwiches with his breadsticks and chicken and I eat my salad with breadsticks and enjoy the chicken by itself.

Seriously, we have tried the pizza, ribs, sandwiches, pasta, soups and the BBQ chicken and they are not as tasty as this particular combination. {If the pizza dough were made from the breadstick dough, then *maybe* I would like the pizza here.  It isn't}

Chili Cheese Fries- Compare and Contrast…

mmm-yoso!!! is a blog.  About "food".  Sometimes we stretch the definition of "food" and "meals" we ate.  This is one of those times.

Hi. Cathy here again, with a kind of "research" food post. All done with the purpose of informing you, our dear readers, about some sort of food item… 

The following are ranked in ascending order.

It seems everyone is offering chili cheese fries as a side, or as a meal lately and I thought I would give you my take on this kind of meal or side dish. Dsc01593_2 So, lets start out with the "original" in a sense…Weinerschintzel. As you can see, in order to fully enjoy the meal at "Der Schnitz", we indulged in corn dogs and a chili dog (the beef one: I went crazy with my tax refund this year and decided to spring for it) topped with mustard and onions. Let’s just say the chili is…um…’meaty’, with many chunks of the same shape and size of ‘meat’ in it….very manufactured. You can see the cheese is not melted (but that eventually happened) and the fries are…skinny and not crispy. Not my favorite. But, for $1.59, what should I expect? I do love the Tastee Freeze ice cream and shakes here, though. 

Dsc01617_2 Del Taco has jumped into the fray and is offering a $1 off coupon to try the Chili Cheddar fries, making the final price about $1.50.  I do like the Del Taco quesedillas because they are made with Cheddar…and the cheese part of this meal was indeed excellent.  The fries stayed crispy.  The chili was OK, not too spicy ( I ended up adding some hot sauce after a while) and the overall effect was that I thought if I was at Del Taco, I should get something a bit more ‘Mexican’ in style to eat here…although, as you can see, I got a burger to round out the flavors…

The fries stayed crispy, the cheese is real and good…and the chili- it is hot dog chili, Coney Island chili…*really* good chili.  I could eat a bowl of this stuff with some oyster crackers and be *very* happy.

I could not help but mention a similar "meal" based with fries that you can purchase for a mere $2.89 at In-N-Out.  It is the only reason you get the hermetically sealed fork/salt napkin packet.

Animal Fries.

Why do these fries taste superior? In-N-Out does not have a freezer.  The potatoes are cut fresh- you can watch the people doing it before they dump them into the fryer.

The fries are topped cheese.  It melts.  Then topped with grilled onions.  Crispy, burned grilled onions…so that sort of helps with a "chili" flavor, since onions are part of the base of chili…right??

Then all of it is topped with the sauce that is normally used on the burgers.  Pretty much a nice, fresh Thousand Island-ish sauce…relish and that pinky-peachy salad dressing.
