Yes, it is that time of year again. Posts about Rose parade float road tests, float decorating and the Showcase of floats will be on the blog about once a month until January of next year. The related food/meal posts, will be changing quite a bit. The Phoenix Decorating Company, which constructs the floats where The Mister and I volunteer to decorate in December, has moved its barn about 20 miles East of Pasadena, to Irwindale. The drive there from here is a bit quicker, but we still left at 5 on Saturday morning, to see the floats lined up at 7 for their mechanical and maneuverability testing.

The Theme of the 2018 Rose Parade is "Making A Difference" and each float entry has its own interpretation of those words. Here are some previews of floats that were tested. We will get to the food in a moment.

The Shriners Hospitals for Children 2018 Parade float, "Caring for Kids Around the World", depicts their mascot, Fezzy Bear, in a space suit surrounded by planets and satellites.

Kiwanis International has a tiger driving a race car on its "Racing to Serve Children" titled float.

"Planting the Seeds of Service" is the theme of the Rotary International 2018 Rose Parade float entry.

The Odd Fellows and Rebekahs float, "Sacrifice To Serve" has another patriotic float entered in the Rose Parade, the title is in line with the 'Making a Difference' Theme. Western Asset is going to have at least a whale and turtle on their 2018 float entry.
The Lutheran Hour Ministries 68th entry into the parade is titled "Bringing Christ to the Nations".

There were two other floats (Armenian and Lions) which were in the 'rebar' stage of assembly which were also tested that morning.

Now, on to the food section of this post.

The first stop of the day (at about 6:05 a.m.) was at the Red Hill exit, to get to the Kolache Factory, mentioned in this post
We enjoyed the ham, egg and cheese stuffed dough ($3.19) and the simple, wonderful bacon and cheese stuffed treat ($2.26). The modern version of an Eastern European pastry roll was enough to keep us satisfied before arriving in Irwindale.

When we left Irwindale, we took side roads South, looking for a place to get breakfast and also scoping out possibilities for dinner after we decorate floats in December… We saw a variety of Mexican restaurants and taco shops, several 'Diner Type' places and then somehow got to this "HK2" mall. Kirk wrote about visits there 12 years ago. (Krua Thai is still there).

Because we were here before 9 a.m., only workers were showing up for early morning openings of the shops (I counted at least 20 restaurants, of so many ethnic varieties-Vietnamese, Thai, Chinese, Korean, Taiwanese, Japanese, Mexican and…the only one that was open when we were there- the American place, Penny's.

Signage, Specials, Services offered, Penny's has it all, especially good food.

The weekday breakfast specials are 40¢ more on weekends. I went with a "Mini Breakfast" ($6.95 plus 40¢), two eggs (over easy-perfectly cooked) 2 sausage (or bacon) and home fries (also rye toast). This was great, really good; I love those sliced fried potatoes. The sausage was a good quality.
The Mister chose the corned beef hash and eggs plate ($8.59). Very flavorful corned beef, with diced potato and crispy grill top fried. Those perfect over easy eggs and more of those delightful home fries.
He chose a biscuit and gravy as the side. Great gravy, a really nice baking powder biscuit.
Now that we (sort of) know this mall is here, we will be back a bit later in the morning to try some of the other restaurants when they are open.

The Fancy Fish (Mira Mesa)

It was late March, or maybe April and I was on Mira Mesa Boulevard at the corner with HMart, Daiso, In-n-Out, The Kebab Shop, Go Go Sushi and Ramen and many other places and noticed new signage. Finally, The Mister and I had a chance to stop here; glad we did. Walk in, order, pay. Find a seat and your food will be delivered. Platters, salads, bao and tapas. Everything customizable and made to order. Could be plain, could be fancy.

Customizable: 1. Choose the VIP (very important protein): tilapia, white fish, tofu, swordfish, shrimp, jumbo shrimp, salmon, mani mani, chicken, catfish, albacore or ahi., pick the preparation, pick a sauceWe have tried a variety of offerings already.

2. Choose a style of preparation:Fried, pan cooked, grilled or steamed.

3. Choose a sauce: Cajun dry rub, honey dijon, cilantro lime, lemongrass satay, curry, creamy sriracha, teriyaki, sweet and sour, garlic butter, toasted sesame, hoisin. Each of these sauces are made in house and each that we've tried has been delicious.

4. 5. 6. Choose a salad mix, salad dressings and sides.

Really, many decisions to be made…this is why it's a long post. We needed to figure out what we liked and wanted more of for future visits. We have tried all the preparation styles, which is the focus of this post.
There are a variety of seating areas, some with a great view of the open kitchen. Let's start with fried. The first time here, trying the whitefish platter ($9)with a salad and slaw as the sides- a large piece of fish, perfectly fried. Salad dressing made here, a good ranch. Here's a closeup of the lemongrass satay sauce. There's a touch of heat in it, and it is good. The Seafood Sampler ($9) is interesting in that each seafood is prepared with a different batter for frying. Calamari , Shrimp (wrapped in rice paper), fish bites, shrimp chips and fries. I do so appreciate a good fry. The Bao; "Asian tacos' on the menu. This one is soft shell crab ($6) (it is $4 on Tuesdays). Cute how the Fancy Fish branding is on each fresh made, steamy bun. Shrimp (crispy or grilled ($5.50, $3 on Tuesday) great, large, different than the shrimp on the Sampler. Grilled chicken and grilled fish (an a 'light meal' visit ($5/$5.50). Again, really nice and a different preparation. The bao are filling!

The seared ahi tuna salad ($12) with cilantro lime dressing. Wonderful, fresh, good ratio of tuna to salad. Will order again.
Grilled tilapia ($10) this was meaty steak and really good. Shrimp chips and salad as sides made this a 'healthier' choice.

That first photo of this trio is of the steamer. The whitefish steamed with lemongrass satay was recommended by the owner…we had to. We did ask for the sauce on the side, but usually the fish is steamed with the sauce. Choosing the grilled zucchini and cole slaw made this another nice meal. Both of us really liked this preparation of the fish.

All in all, a great way to get exactly what you want. Great service, nice people and great food.

Thai Burger Company (Clairmont)

mmm-yoso!!! is a food blog, written by three friends, interchangeably. Kirk has been working a lot of extra hours this week while Ed(from Yuma) is relaxing after his interesting vacation. Cathy is writing a short post.

The Mister and I shop at Carnival Supermarket about once a month. Back in February, I recalled seeing this storefront and signage and made a mental note to stop in…but things got busy. The few times since then, we had just had lunch and I kept that mental note tucked away somewhere…Finally, curiosity got the best of me…a pig as signage, the name of 'Thai Burger Company-Home of the Original Rice Burgers'. We had to stop. Walk in and there's the counter in front of you. You order from the limited menu (five appetizers, four burgers and a few interesting beverage choices), pay and find a seat at one of the three tables out front. It turns out that Thai Burger Company started as a Food Truck, originally near the Navy Exchange at the 32nd Street base. It still is a food truck, at various farmers markets around town.
This was our shared meal; we had just purchased beverages at Starbucks before deciding to stop here. The chicken pot stickers ($3.50) were wonderful, the filling of chicken and still crispy fresh cabbage was plentiful, fresh and very nice. The skewer of calamari balls($3.50) was quite large; if we had an order of three skewers ($10), I think that would be too much food. The balls were nice, I suppose a bit standard, and two were enough for me, especially with all the other food. (Other skewered choices are shrimp and imitation crab).
The classic BBQ pork rice burger ($7) was a great choice. The 'bun' of sticky rice was not too thick. The meat was marinated with the just the right amount of flavors and that charred grill flavor was the perfect touch. If this had been served on a plate, the amount of rice to meat was a perfect ratio. Eating this like a burger wasn't too messy; the rice held up and there was actually more meat than 'bun'.

Now I'm curious about the other 'burgers' available- chicken satay, curry pork and fried tofu. Also the beverages do look interesting. We'll be back.

Las Morelianas/La Bahia (revisits)

I wrote about Las Morelianas/La Bahia in 2014 and The Mister and I have returned quite a few times; I just haven't posted.
In the interim, the exterior and interior have had a few improvements while the food has remained the same. (The parking lot has been paved, also!) The above seafood menu (La Bahia) is reflected in a table menu- the seafood kitchen is at the back of the restaurant.
The large shrimp coctele ($14) has more than enough plump shrimp(20 at least) in a lime/catsup sauce with cucumbers topped with avocado. Always refreshing on a hot day. The tabletop array of hot sauces to add is extensive. Similarly, the fish ceviche tostada ($5) is freshly made with lime juice, onion, tomato, cilantro and avocado and served with crunchy, dry tostada shells, separately (no sogginess).

The plates of fish (whole or filets) ($13) are served with rice, beans, fresh made tortillas (there's a lady on the patio making those around 11 a.m. daily) and, of course, a cup of seafood consommé. This was a simple garlic butter filet plate; didn't want to deal with bones.
At the front of the restaurant is the carnitas kitchen (Las Morelianas) and menu above. The paper menu prices (eat in) are in a few cases less than the wall menu (to go).
The choices of sauce here always overwhelm me and asking for both red and green is usually the only way I can order.
When I am not that hungry, the surtido (mixed carnitas) taco ($3) is always a good choice- all the parts of the animal, even a bit of liver is in here.
In the last year, a juice bar area has been added. A medium simple juice (spinach/cucumber/pineapple, which does not photograph well) is $3.

It’s been a while week-Sima’s Grill and Deli

Here you are, on a lovely Friday 'cool down' day, reading this food blog, mmm-yoso!!! Kirk and Ed(from Yuma) are preparing to enjoy the Holiday weekend and Cathy is writing.

The last time I posted about Sima's was in 2013. The Mister and I haven't driven on Miramar Road unless avoiding traffic. There has been a three week period in the last month when we had to be at daily appointments West of here and taking various routes to get lunch on the way home became a priority. When Kirk mentioned he was writing 'It's Been a While Week', I knew what my contribution would be.

This unassuming end building in a mall anchored by a McDonald's, across from Miramar Marine Corps Air Station has been here since 1984, providing breakfast and lunch six days a week. Run by a husband, wife and their daughter, it's another 'local' place that has withstood the test of time.

The interior has remained the same, the menu has also, although there have, of course, been price increases.
The gyros salad ($9.95) is served with warm, fluffy pita bread with house made tzatziki. The wonderful house made, herby salad dressing is so fresh and perfect with the crispy fresh Romaine, cucumber, tomato, onion and olives. The grilled gyros is just crisped on the edges and there is plenty of it on this salad.

The hot pastrami sandwich ($8.75) is toasted and served with plenty of grilled, smoky, peppery, flavorful (it is Boars Head brand) meat topped with Swiss. The fries are quite good. The char-grilled cheeseburger is still my favorite (window special #1- $9.95, 1/2 lb, includes fries and a drink) burger. It is made from fresh (not frozen) Angus Pride beef and…well..that char grilling is what makes it for me. I was alone one day and decided to stop in again, opting for a cold/deli sandwich (roast beef) ($7.95) on an onion roll (light toasted). It's served simply, with lettuce, tomato, a smear of mustard and of mayonnaise…and plenty of the Boars Head roast beef as well as a very good dill pickle. Just right on a hot day.

Up 2 Yoü Cafe (revisits)

mmm-yoso!!! is the name of this blog. It's a food blog. Cathy is writing today; Kirk and Ed (from Yuma) are otherwise indisposed.

I just read this article, which has a mention about Up 2 Yoü in the second paragraph and decided I should get a post out before the changes occur. There are two locations of Up 2 Yoü (I've written about dessert at the first location twice.). With the heatwave we've been having, being able to sit down for a refreshing dessert is so refreshing.

The other Up 2 Yoü location is in the same parking lot as Homestyle Hawaiian (just behind/around the corner from the soon to be rebuilt K-Sandwiches). The interior is spacious. The ordering is right next to the menu on the wall. The choices are varied.
A simple affogato (espresso and ice cream) (in this case, vanilla) ($3.95) is usually just enough of a dessert. Unless we also decide to share a crepe. ($4.25)(simply filled with mascarpone cheese ($1)). Fun and filling. A new (to us) menu item is the chocolate sphere ($7.95). That small cup of dark chocolate sauce is very hot and… when poured over the sphere, will begin to melt it, revealing the ice cream (chocolate mint was chosen and it was very refreshing, complimenting the fruit and all the other chocolate flavors) until most of the chocolate sphere is collapsed. The ice cream was on top of a cut up brownie. So many flavors of chocolate as well as fruits. The various textures and temperatures made this a special shared dessert.

2017 San Diego County Fair “Where the West is Fun” Part Two: it’s open!

mmm-yoso!!! is a blog about food. Usually, we (Kirk, Ed (from Yuma) and Cathy) write about the event surrounding the consumption of the food food…Cathy has a big event and quite a bit of food for today's post.

I wrote about the 2017 San Diego County Fair before it opened. The Mister and I have been here two times already and are slowly eating our way through the unusual as well as more common Fair foods, all while enjoying the thousands of other activities, displays of judged entries, contests and shows.There was an enormous sand castle being built during the first week of the Fair.
It's just to the left of the entrance, at the front of the Paul Ecke Garden Show area, which has displays in the theme of the Fair.
There are also several areas in this shaded outdoor area of the Fair, serving some 'fancier' food choices along with adult beverages.
The Theme Exhibit (to the right of the entrance) has live entertainment, facades for photo opportunities and tons of information about the expansion of our United States West of the Mississippi (including this nice display about the Pony Express-reminding me of a stop on our summer road trip last year (bottom photos of this post). The Family Funville area (at the center of the racetrack) has the Fiesta Village as well as
child size rides and food booths which offer some kid friendly food choices. There are so many more things going on in this area, including the Creative Youth exhibit as well as the Farm area. The Farm is growing rapidly with additional seedlings brought by elementary school children visiting the Fairgrounds as an end of year school trip; quite an education about the how and where food originates, as well as other farming knowledge about our pollinators (bees and butterflies) and hydroponics in this area.

Back in the Midway area are the Home and Hobby

With displays of crafts, collections, preserved foods and baking winners as well as being able to watch some crafts being created. The Home and Hobby area is where One Day Contests are held. You get into the Fair for free if you enter!

The Mister and I will be back at least two more times this year. Some things have been disappointing. It was promoted at the Pre-opening that the Bacon A-Fair would be selling bacon wrapped cactus, but they don't have it on the menu.We walked over to Chicken Charlie's, to order the

pineapple malasadas, but were told they were not being made.

We went to find what we knew:

The 17 Hands, just to the East of Plaza de Mexico (across from Woodworking and Gemstones) is still serving a simple menu, in a covered, cool room with plenty of seating.

Then we walked over to the Chuckwagon, checking out the menu first.
I tend to read from the bottom of a menu. The bottom right item caught my eye ( mentioned in my 2016 County Fair postscript post); I really like apples. Another 'Fair time' snack is the fresh corn. This year, I decided to be different, went to the Kids Zone infield and ordered a cup instead of an ear of corn at the Fiesta Village. Topped with butter and Cotija cheese, I also added lime; this was a very large portion; more than an ear's worth of corn.
The Mister had noticed the "Fish Fry Medley" as a new menu item at the Reno's Fish and Chips stand on the Midway and ordered it. Each item is fried separately and has a unique breading. Cod (a large, tender piece), octopus (one piece, barely worth mentioning; I hope the 'octopus on a stick' is a larger portion), clams (teensy, tiny and either were fried in bad oil or had freezer burn; an off flavor), shrimp (very small but flavorful) and squid rings over a massive amount of fried potatoes. That was it for my fried food for the week!

Back to Roxy's, a local favorite for a falafel burger (with added avocado). It comes with a large salad and just tastes good. Always a choice (last year we tried the eggplant parmesan sandwich and it was great, as is the artichoke sandwich).
A visit to the San Diego County Fair is not complete until we have a fresh made cream puff with a cup of coffee (with real half and half).

mmm-yoso!!! is ta food blog and three of us share in the writing of posts. Right now, both Kirk and Ed(from Yuma) are unavailable to write anything. Since Cathy is available, she is writing today.

It has been about a year and a half since I first wrote about Mr. Spicy. Just 'down the hill' from home (a route both The Mister and I drive to avoid the freeways), it's easy to drop in and pick up something 'to go'. On the rare occasions when both of us are home on the same day, we choose to stop here for lunch.
There is a lunch menu under the glass top of each table. The prices vary dependent on the primary ingredients. As you will soon see, the photographs of the plates are accurate.
Still no charge for hot tea here; I like that. Soup comes with every meal.

An egg roll (vegetable) will set you back 50¢. It's nice. The eggplant with brown sauce (I had ordered with Szechuan sauce, but there was a communication problem)($5.99) was a very good plate of food; it was just fresh and good and hearty. It didn't even need the spicy 'kick' that I thought I wanted. The fish with Szechuan sauce ($7.99) was delightful; a thin breading gave each piece of fish a nice light 'crunch' and the vegetables (onion, carrot and green pepper) were just right, as was the sauce. Very fresh tastes with this dish.
The Mister orders orange chicken ($6.99) every time. He stares at the menu, pretends to be considering something else, but when it comes time to order…he is predictable. It's a good size serving of lightly crunchy large pieces of tender chicken in a very nice spicy sauce.

We really like the dry pot and twice cooked fish from the dinner menu and one of those always shows up when we eat here or order to take home later in the day. This family owned and run restaurant is good.

Arely French Bakery Cafe

Here we all are, at the food blog mmm-yoso!!!, checking out what someone has had to eat. Kirk is on his way home from vacation and Ed (from Yuma) is enjoying the 'springtime weather' (in Yuma), so Cathy is writing a short post.

This year has not been 'normal' and it's half over! There have been never-ending appointments and meetings taking me (and The Mister) all over town and when it is time for a meal, usually something quick, convenient and 'healthy' has been consumed. On the rare occasions when there is time to actually coordinate a meal together, we are exhausted and 'splurge' may mean ordering a beverage or a shared dessert.

It so happened we were in the Clairmont area of town and instead of looking for someplace new, we stopped at Arely, which has been posted here before, most recently by Kirk. Stepping inside, the menu board is easily noticed.
Breakfast is served from 7 a.m.-3 p.m. The lunch menu (sandwiches, salads and panini) is served all day and the dinner portion of the menu (pasta, chicken, seafood and soups) are served from 11 a.m.-closing Of course at eye level are the pastry cases, just as tempting as can be. But we were here in time for lunch. The Caprese salad ($8.50); made with buffalo mozzarella, fresh, tasty tomatoes, basil and topped with a slightly sweet balsamic vinaigrette was a nice item to share. As was the cup of wonderfully cheesy French Onion Soup ($3.50) which is properly made, with sherry. The Croque Madame ($8.95) was exceptionally good and quite large. Topped with two eggs (over easy by request), the grilled Black Forest ham and Swiss cheese on thick slices of house made brioche bread, lightly toasted, was just perfect for sharing.

Of course, I just decided that a dessert was going to be purchased and consumed here. A blueberry Danish ($2.40) was the choice, after much consideration. There is a thin layer of cream cheese underneath those small, flavor filled wild berries and a bite of all of that combined with the flaky crust was just so perfect.

2017 San Diego County Fair- “Where the West is Fun”- Part One, Before it opens

mmm-yoso!!is primarily a food blog. Today's post is about anticipated food consumption and a summer tradition, the San Diego County Fair. As usual, Cathy is writing about this event; Kirk isn't around and Ed (from Yuma) is in Yuma.

Later today (4 p.m.) the official opening of the San Diego County Fair will occur. Tomorrow morning (at 7:30), in Downtown San Diego, there will be a Cattle Drive to promote the Fair theme of "Where the West is Fun". I've been at the Fairgrounds watching the preparations for this, the 6th largest County Fair in the United States. Here are a few photos and links of what to expect this year.

The front gate is set up. The statue of Don Diego, Fair Ambassador, is appropriately dressed. The historic clock tower has been moved to the front entrance area after repairs.
The Midway was repaved a couple of weeks ago in anticipation of the Fair, the race season and Autumn Breeders Cup and is now set up, with the far West end ferris wheel is in sight when you walk in.
Chicken Charlie's corner, at the first right off the Midway, was set up in its usual location, before some other food booths got here (and Chicken Charlie's has an additional location on the Midway this year).
The first left off the Midway is also set up. The entrance to Bing Crosby Hall (filled with the latest gadgets, goodies and items you never knew you needed) is at the end of this food filled corridor.
The Plaza de Mexico is set up, awaiting so many daily events. That buildings next to and behind the Plaza house the Fair entries and events. Go up to the second floor,
and you are greeted to Home and Hobby, what I consider to be the 'heart' of the Fair.
The Preserved Foods have been judged and are on display.
As have all the craft entries Two days ago, baked goods were brought in to be judged. Ribbons and prizes have been awarded.

There is so much to see and do at the Fair. This is a link to some of the new events.

It doesn't have to be expensive. This is a local news link to deals and discounts. (You can buy the multi day entrance pass ($26) until July 3, because paying for it is less expensive than paying admission two times.
