Hot, Cold, Wet & Hungry- Shrimp Cocktail and Birria de Chivo at Palominos

Thanks for visiting the mmm-yoso!!! food blog. The part usually played by Kirk is being played by Cathy today. Because Kirk and His Missus are on vacation.  In a faraway land.

Hi.  Boy, have we had an odd weather year.   Here it is April and we had cold winds and rain intersperse with some sun all day yesterday.  The Mister was going to be working late, I was hungry and didn't want to cook, so we met at  Palominos.   Again.  028
Of course we could not decide on what to eat and while perusing the menu, saw a new addition in the soup category- Birria de Chivo- Goat … soup.  Usually, this is more of a stew, but the goat factor was there, so I ordered it. 017
Soon, the fairly large bowl of meat and broth (I could taste ancho chilis, oregano, cumin, thyme and cinnamon) was brought out, with the appropriate sides of corn tortillas as well as onion, cilantro, lime wedges and red pepper flakes.023
It looked like a lot of meat in the bowl of broth…and this is how much broth was in the bowl.022
The rest was meat.  A nice, gamey, fatty, flavorful goat. Which had been simmered for a long while, with meat falling off the bones.  A rich, deep broth and rich, flavorful meat.  For $6.49, one of the heartiest and heart warming soups we have had here.020
When ordering, I decided  to contrast the warm and meat with cool and seafood, so a shrimp coctele ($9.99) was in order.  There were 30 shrimp in this large serving glass, with lime and tomato juice, cucumber and some onion.  The fresh flavors of this 'broth' as well as the pretty large flavorful shrimp were a nice contrast and compliment to the fatty rich soup broth.  It was a nice break for both of us.  But I had to drive home in this…027
and figured the traffic on the freeway would be backed up, so drove around the corners to Starbucks, pulled the old computer out of my car031
and had a grande chai latte, no water, with The Mister before he headed back to work and I headed home.  I hope everyone had a warm evening and safe driving.

Point Loma Seafoods- a revisit

mmm-yoso!!!, the blog you are perusing, is musings about food consumed or prepared by one of us- Kirk, ed(from Yuma), Cathy or some other friends.  Today, Cathy is musing. Because, Kirk and His Missus are on vacation.

Hi.  I've been to Point Loma Seafoods countless times.  I've only posted once on it, though, years ago, so  it is time to show you it pretty much has not changed. It has been in San Diego since 1963.  A landmark, selling and serving fresh and smoked fish. 073 You walk in and the seafood counter and menu is straight ahead of you.  You have to just step forward to order.  When one of the many order takers asks "who's ready?"
 054

Place your order, get a number and wait.  Once your number is called, you pay and take your food (it is on a tray), walk out and can sit out front or in the covered area, next door.038
You can order a shrimp cocktail or a smoked fish cocktail ($4.18 and it is not even 1/2 a pound of fish), or do what I do and just get a few pieces of smoked fish- the condiments in the eating area include cocktail sauce.  I order the smoked fish after I have placed my food order, since the food takes some time to cook…and by cook, I mean fry. There are seafood salads served here, the tuna sandwich is made with fresh cooked (still warm) albacore and I think that is all …oh there is sushi…but otherwise, pretty much everything here is fried.  The people running the fryer know what they are doing.

003 The Mister ordered a squid sandwich-solid squid cut in rectangular logs, breaded and lightly fried, and served between two slices of very fresh, soft, sourdough bread. ($8.32)068
Topped with some fresh tartar sauce, it is a wonderful lunch.

004

We shared a cup of white clam chowder and an iced coffee, with milk.005
The chowder ($3.26)is creamy rich and  has a good, fresh clam flavor, as well as carrots, celery and potatoes.  It is one item we always order. 062 I got my usual fish and chips plate ($11.13)- the fresh  fish most abundant that day (usually haddock, maybe cod- a firm, white fish) 3 or 4 pieces  lightly breaded and fried nicely and served with crispy fries and a wonderful house made cole slaw, lightly dressed with mayonnaise.
071 The only caveat- when you do walk next door to take a seat, remember  to get a good view…

Okawa Steak House and Sushi- Santee

mmm-yoso!!! is the name of the food blog you are reading. A few friends contribute and write about what we eat.   Cathy is writing today.  The others (Kirk, ed (from Yuma), Vicky and a few others)  are apparently eating.

Hi.  It was lunchtime, The Mister and I were hungry, Okawa has opened. In Santee.

002
It is located in the same mall as Best Buy, behind the Burger King and technically is on the same (large) block where Costco and Home Depot are located, but on Mission Gorge Road…the South side of the block.

We were greeted promptly and a friendly Young Man asked if we wanted to sit at the Sushi Bar, a regular table or the Teppanyaki Table for Hibachi.023
The sushi bar did look inviting, but I was not in a mood for that today.  So we sat at the teppanyaki table, with a group of four others, ordered hot tea and checked out the menu.

 006
We ordered, and soon salad and mushroom topped miso soup were brought out.  The miso was definitely not made from that miso paste or powder and had a light, crisp flavor.  The mushroom flavor was only in the mushroom, not the broth.  The salad dressing was the fresh tasting almost pureed ginger dressing which is served at most Japanese places.  This one seemed to have a touch of soy/saltiness to it.  (In a good way saltiness).  Soon our chef came out with a cart of enough rice for frying, vegetables for all six of us, and the proteins ordered as well as the sauces and other condiments necessary for each protein.

007

He proceeded to pour two sauces for each of us- a ginger based one and a mayonnaise based one.  Those who had ordered steamed rice had that served to us.

Then the show began.

 009
Rice, for those who had ordered fried rice, and already chopped vegetables for everyone were placed onto the oiled grill. (When The Mister and I got married, XXX number of years ago, our reception was at Kyoto, a teppanyaki restaurant in Dearborn, Michigan and everything was the same, except the veggies there came whole and the "show" took a lot longer to chop up everything…and the prices at lunch were a less…probably because it was XXX years ago).

012 The onion rings were taken apart, stacked, a bit of oil inserted and small volcano-like effects happened. 013

The rice was fried, with an egg, (which disappeared, whole, into the hat of the chef for a while) and then the crispier rice and veggies formed to spell out "I (heart) U"…upside down and backwards… and then those were served.

015
The proteins were placed onto the grill (two orders of Banzai chicken, a split order of Samurai steak and Hibachi shrimp-you can combine on the lunch specials), Samurai steak, and Chilean sea bass.

017
The Mister's order of Samurai steak (medium rare), fried rice ($1.95 extra, but *so* crisp and tasty-a nutty flavor, probably because of the sesame oil…and butter) and some of his vegetables ($10.95). 018

My Hibachi Chilean sea bass (with a teriyaki sauce, some vegetables )(I got the extra onions from The Mister, and from Our Chef) and steamed rice ($11.95). The sea bass was tender, moist, flaky and had just enough flavor (not overpowered by the house made teriyaki).019
…Our talented and amusing Chef.

An excellent meal that was a lot of fun to watch being prepared.  Total bill was $29.20-the hot green tea was $1 each and kept refilled, as were the other beverages at the table. Not an inexpensive lunch, but an excellent, fun lunch.

Harvest Ranch Market and another Pastrami Sandwich

mmm-yoso!!! is the food blog, written by a few friends.  Today, Cathy has written a short post.  Kirk and ed (from Yuma) and Vicky are reading. Or something.

The other day, I was out in El Cajon near where Second Street turns into Jamacha Road and decided to stop into what has been an old favorite place to shop.070
It wasn't crowded around 1 p.m. so I decided to continue my pursuit  of a great pastrami sandwich, for FOY (Friend of Yoso), "H" and dropped in. It's a fancy market, with a few branches around town (including Jonathan's in La Jolla) with Boars Head meats and condiments077
as well as all the other items you'd see in a grocery store. 073
A fancy grocery store anyhow…the wine selection is awesome and they have wine tasting events here pretty regularly (sign up inside the store to be notified).  I don't take photos of people, so that is why I don't have too many photos inside the store.078
But here's a nicely blurred photo of the Produce area, where I picked up a d'Anjou pear for my dessert ($1.49/lb). Then I paid and walked over to the Starbucks in the same mall.083

A full sandwich is $6.99 (half sandwiches are $3.50) and includes cheese, choice of bread, lettuce, tomato, onions, mayo and mustard.  I got pastrami and kraut, warmed, with mustard on rye, no cheese.  The bread was soft and flavorful and a seeded rye. The meat was not fatty but wonderfully smoky in flavor. A quality pastrami, plenty of it.  The kraut was nice and crispy.  The pear cost 70 cents, so my whole meal was $7.69 plus $1.50 for the fresh, individually brewed with a drip filter and freshly ground beans coffee at Starbucks (I did not want the Pike's Place brew and asked for the Bold of the day, which is Italian this week and the nice Young Man behind the counter ground some beans, poured hot water into a little gizmo over the coffee cup and made me a nice, fresh, hot cup of coffee at the regular price). It was a great meal, just on the edge of too much food.

I hope everyone has a nice weekend.

It’s Burger Week (Again) Weevil Burger- in La Mesa

mmm-yoso!!! is the food blog you are reading and this time it's Cathy posting about a  wonderful burger she enjoys regularly.

Hi. If you've been around San Diego for a while, you remember Boll Weevil, the burger/bar place where pool tables abounded.  Most of the locations closed a few years ago (the Boll Weevil location on Clairmont Mesa is still there). We've always loved the burgers at Boll Weevil, because they would grill them medium rare. Weevil Burger does that also.015
This reincarnation is in the same spot as a previous Boll Weevil, in the La Mesa Fletcher Parkway strip mall which houses 'the' Michaels and 'the' Souplantation, closer to Shizuoka which is near Dallas Street.019
The interior is essentially the same, just cleaned up a bit (the original menu with prices is printed on that endangered species green sea turtle shell on the wall) with 4 flat screen televisions.

 022
After you place your order, the Traditional Tray of Condiments is brought to your table. -pickles, onions, relish, sweet peppers, catsup, mustard, mustardrelish blend, tobasco, salt and pepper.  You still have to remember to ask for mayonnaise.

010
The half pound Weevil burger, medium rare. ($4.59).  It's $1.50 more to add cheese, lettuce and tomato and really, I don't want that on this burger.  The meat is coarse ground and flavorful all by itself.  016
I did add pickles, onion and mustard.  The bun is toasted.  Nothing else is needed to make this perfect for me.
004
The pool tables and video game area was busy the night we were here. 012
The Mister ordered the 1/2 pound Mushroom-Swiss burger with a side salad ($8.99). Also medium rare.  as a combo (with fries (straight or curly), onion rings or salad) it's $8.99 and quite a meal.  He likes the fresh sauteed mushrooms and the taste of the Swiss cheese on his burger.

The croutons are made in house, from rye bread, which they use here for their patty melt… Just plain white lettuce and a slice of tomato, but on its own, the salad is $3.50, so the combos are less expensive than ordering individual items here.008
This particular location is doing very well and has a variety of menu items, including gyros sandwiches and varieties of chicken, all of which are fried properly. Sometimes I do order the 2 piece fried chicken meal, because it is so good. Usually, though it's the 1/2 pound Weevil Burger. That's all I need.

It’s Burger Week (Again)- Fred’s Old Fashioned Burgers (El Cajon)

This location fo Fred's has closed.

mmm-yoso!!! is the food blog written by Kirk, ed (from Yuma), Cathy and a few other friends.  Today, it's Cathy's turn.

Hi.  I knew it was the Third Annual Burger Week for us at mmm-yoso!!! and thought I would share some East County places The Mister and I enjoy.  First, Fred's Old Fashioned Burgers.  018
The building that houses Fred's used to be a Taco Bell,  so you know it is not very large inside.  When it is busy, there are full outdoor tables. 001
The indoor ordering counter is pretty much unchanged from the old Taco Bell blueprint.017
The Additional  Condiment Bar is right behind you after you place order and pay.015
You take a seat in the different-than-Taco-Bell decorated area.  Your food will be delivered to your table.005
If you've ordered a shake ($2.95) (which you *must* do), it will be brought out first.  The Mister and I decided to share a chocolate peanut butter one. Thick, rich, using real peanut butter, this satisfies my salt cravings and His chocolate cravings. You can order your shakes with or without malt and 'extra thick' or 'regular'. There are about 8 flavors to choose from.  009
Your burgers are brought out.  Mine was a "Patty Melt" ($3.79).  I must confess, the breads that are served here are the best and the real reason I like the food here. Even though this was not rye, it was a very fresh, very thick sourdough, grilled to perfection.  The burger is topped with grilled onions, (sadly) American cheese and an excellent Thousand Island. I know, American Cheese and sourdough does not a Patty Melt make, hence the quotation marks above.  The burger is hand shaped, not frozen, 1/4 pound and not thick, so as to fit on the breads.  They pretty much can't be  cooked to a medium rare, which I like.  The meat is not overly flavored on its own ( I added salt, pepper and pickles near the end of finishing the burger). 010
This time, The Mister ordered a Half Pounder ($4.64), without onions.  It comes with lettuce, tomato and Thousand Island sauce (he got pickles at the bar) and is served on the wonderfully fresh, toasted potato roll you see here. Again, the bread is what brings me back more than the taste of the burger.  Oddly, the crinkle cut fries are somehow seasoned with a light layer of salt and apparently are cooked in beef fat.  They have a wonderful flavor without having to add anything, not even catsup.
014

One other item of note, both Coke and Pepsi are served here.  Buying a "combo" does not save any money, the individual prices add up to be the same.  It's an interestingly decorated good use of the old Taco Bell space that does a steady business.  Not bad, but not outstanding burgers.004

Pastrami Sandwich research- Antonelli’s Deli, El Cajon

mmm-yoso!!! is a food blog, mostly written by Kirk, ed (from Yuma) and Cathy.  A few others contribute as well, all of us writing about food we eat and sometimes the reason why we like it, or don't. Today, Cathy is writing about something she likes.

Hi. One of my earlier posts, about decorating Rose parade floats and having a pastrami sandwich at The Hat, mentioned… a pastrami sandwich.  Which I really liked.  I got a question from "H", asking me where good pastrami sandwiches were to be found in San Diego, because her hubby is a sucker for them, and realized I pretty much always order pastrami (smoked corn beef) sandwiches whenever it is available, although I like sandwiches of all kinds.  I don't make this type of sandwich at home. I did mention pastrami in my post about BMH Italian and remembered again the other day, when I was driving in an industrial area of El Cajon, just off Highway 67 and Fletcher Parkway and saw this sign:026
and pulled into the lot. I have been here, but it was years ago (it opened in 1984, back when the Unemployment Office was still next door) and had basically forgotten about it, only stopping in when I was buying tires, looking for plumbing supplies or somehow stayed on Magnolia instead of getting onto the 67.  Silly me.  The food here is great.024
Nice and clean inside. You walk up, order and pay, grab a beverage if you ordered one, then sit down. Your food will be brought out to you.  Eight tables (all of which are filled from about 11 a.m. on). They serve breakfast sandwiches all day and also have two soups of the day and make a very nice chili with cheddar cheese and onions ($3.50/$4.25).030
I ordered a pastrami, no cheese, on rye with kraut.  $7.05 with tax. A very flavorful, soft rye bread (the website states all breads are made fresh daily-wheat, white, rye, sourdough, sqaw and sub roll). It comes with shredded lettuce, tomatoes, Mayo, mustard, salt and pepper.

033 An excellent amount of flavorful pastrami with a nice amount of fat, grilled to some crispness and warmed sauerkraut. Of course served with a pickle.035
Just the right amount of juice and not too peppery.  There are breakfast sandwiches and an excellent cold liverwurst sandwich served here also.  This is just a Pastrami Post. Thanks for "making" me have to do this research, "H"!!! I shall continue to post about every one I can find in the county.

Your New Year Resolution does not have to mean sacrifice:macarons (from Starbucks), charcuterie and cheese plates (from Tender Greens) and a fancy waffle (from Cafe Venti)

mmm-yoso!!! is a blog about food.  It's written by a few friends, all who have different backgrounds, cravings and locations.  Today, Kirk, ed (from Yuma) and Vicky are discovering things to write about and Cathy is writing.

Hi.  I hope the year is going well for you. I'm trying to stick to one of my resolutions from last year  and slowing down to savor life for a short time every single day. It isn't as easy to do as you may think.  Incorporating food along with slowing down. Daily.

Sometimes, this involves stopping in at Starbucks.083
Where you can order a 3 cup French Press of any coffee they sell for $3.50. It is brewed and brought out to you.081
I noticed in the refrigerator section these Macarons, made in France exclusively for Starbucks.  $10 for 12 of them and so *very* good. Flavored in pistachio, coffee, lemon, raspberry, vanilla and chocolate…light, airy with a crunchy crust, chewy cake like piece surrounding the creamy fondant-like fillings, all rich in flavor.  Decadent and delightful.  (Trader Joe's is selling a pack of 6 vanilla and 6 chocolate in their freezer section – the package does not indicate where they are made, but I suspect not in the USA.) One of the Starbucks Baristas said she thought the macarons may be seasonal, so if you see them in the refrigerator, grab a box…or something else to have with your coffee.

027
The other day, The Mister and I ventured into Tender Greens  again, and noticed they were offering a charcuterie plate for $10, so we ordered it. (The three slices at 12 o'clock are tuna, the one at 3 o'clock is a ham and the other two are some sort of wonderful house made salamis, one of them Fra'Mani- neither were too spicy) The house made meats were wonderful.   010We also shared a grilled vegetable salad ($10)-Lettuces topped with grilled mushrooms, cauliflower, zucchini, brussels sprouts, baby parsnips and baby carrots, red pepper and topped with Parmesan and a tomato vinaigrette. Refreshing and making a light meal.

012

The cheese plate ($6) was an excellent dessert.  There were four cheeses, two cheddars and two Jacks.  One of the Jacks was a smoked cheese, which I usually do not like, but the texture and pairing it with the apple made it pleasantly tasty. That's a spicy apple puree on the plate, served with more slices of grilled bread brushed with olive oil.  We even shared a glass of Spanish white wine ($7).  A nice, light, healthy-ish meal. Something we don't always enjoy.   039
One day, we stopped at Cafe Venti, in the same mall as the  Original Tajima and ordered dessert (they also make panini sandwiches here).  To share. 045
The Waffle-Yo: a fresh made waffle, topped with (choice of two) plain and mango yogurt, fresh kiwi, strawberries and mango as well as small mochi. (~$7). A lot of food here and we needed to share it.  Very good, very fresh. The yogurt is tangy, the way I like it.047A latte ($3.75) and water accompanied our snack.

We sat down and talked for each of these small interludes.  We didn't take anything "to go" and did not rush.  So far, I have stuck to one of my 2009 Resolutions and have added a few for 2010. It isn't easy some days, but it has been so enjoyable on other days.   I hope you are finding your resolutions enjoyable and not a burden.

Road Trip: A’Float Sushi Japanese Restaurant- Pasadena

Hello. You are reading mmm-yoso!!!, the food blog. The usual blogger here is Kirk. Sometimes ed (from Yuma) writes about what he ate. Sometimes it's Cathy writing. Then occasionally Vicky and a few others also write about their meals.   Today, Cathy's writing about a meal she and The Mister enjoyed.

So, the other day, The Mister didn't have to go to work and we fueled up the car and drove North. We had seen this place in Pasadena for years…at the Corner of Colorado and Arroyo, a pretty central intersection in the Old Town area. We decided to pay the meter and have lunch. 019
Floating sushi. That's what it's about. Walk in, sit down ask for some tea and watch the boats go whizzing by.
290
You can see the boats are chained together.  They are constantly moving.  There is space for up to four plates on a boat and you just grab and stack plates.  The plates are priced by  design which is noted on the menu/placemat.  015
320
We grabbed the fried shrimp ($3.58) when we saw them being brought out from the kitchen and placed on the boats. Light, crispy and the shrimp with flavor. Note the placemat and prices with corresponding plate designs.303

The mini lobster wrap with soybean paper was only $3.58 and that filler is real crab, not rice.  To the right, the fried squid were $3.08 (see, it's on a plate with a different design).  The squid pieces (rings and tentacles as well as one *really* fresh whole shrimp and one breaded and fried green bean) were very tender and lightly breaded. Again, you have to grab the fried stuff as soon as you see it or it gets cold on the trip around. 310
The dumplings ($2.58) were chilled.  They tasted good, were filled with mostly crab.318
The oysters ($3.58) were fresh and chilled and quite plump.316
The cucumber salad ($3.08) was refreshing. Crispy and with good flavored tomatoes. Topped with a light rice vinegar.330
At the end, I stacked the trays by design, to make it easier for our waitress to tally the bill. (Hot tea was free). (The far left plate was for a $1.98 California roll, 3 pieces. Those were fresh and with real crab) It was fun and different for us. You could ask for anything on the menu to be brought out, or for specific cuts of sushi or rolls to be made. We'll do that next time.

Wholesome Choice- Irvine. A Market, and then some.

mmm-yoso!!! is a food blog.  Just some friends writing about what they ate. Today, it's Cathy writing after she ate.

One Saturday morning, The Mister and I drove North up the 5, took the 405 a few exits, exited at Culver street, went South two lights and stopped here.193
Wholesome Choice.  The location used to be a Wild Oats (Henry's) Marketplace.  It is quite large inside. When you first walk in, there is a line of people waiting for hot Sangak (flatbread) to come out of the oven. I don't take photos of people and so could not get a good one of the ovens. You'll have to go there and see it for yourself.

The bread is four feet long, made from mostly wheat flour,  with a starter from the day before, is topped with sesame seeds,  costs $2.79, is placed on a piece of brown kraft paper directly from the oven, HOT.  I will show you photos later. Here is a story of Sangak .

198

It is a regular grocery store, with fruits, vegetables, Halal meats and pretty much the normal Mediterranean stuff.  Good prices. Very clean.204

195
Nuts- in all varieties and prices.200
Preserved foods and olives from around the world…220
Then, at the other end of the store, you notice the cheeses…and what is all that?  Looks like steam trays.

251
Menus above each area (there are Indian, Persian, Chinese, Thai as well as soups, cold deli and bakery sections )240
In the soup area, there is Haleem.(a wheat-based porridge)276
There is a  Gyros and Schawarma area.226
A by- the-pound deli area…229
So many different Feta cheeses are available…228
as well as any other sides you can think of (fresh hummus is $4.49/lb)238
…so much more that I haven't shown you.  255

These are just some of the desserts.  There is a fresh baked, by the piece baklava and in house made croissant case…so much.

So anyhow.  The Mister and I were hungry and bought some stuff, paid at the cash register and sat down (there are tables inside just past the cash register and also tables out in front of the store).280
Here is a photo of one large styrofoam tray, filled with half a baked chicken(with *wonderful* saffron flavor) on top of what must be a pound of Addas Polo (basmati and saffron rice with lentils, currants and dates) ($7.99). The rest of the photo is the Sangak bread we picked up when we walked in.  At the midpoint of the Sangak bread…see that hummus in a box…one half pound. The box is 4 inches square…wait. 286
Here is a photo of the hummus with a normal size plastic fork…the bread is HUGE.  It is soft, slightly spongy in the areas where it is not too thin, tears easily tastes so good…the sesame seeds make it more flavorful. 284
We also got one Koofteh ($3) Ground beef, rice, herbs and yellow split peas in a vegetable stew.

A wonderful place, not that far from here. There is a location in Anaheim Hills also.  If you have some free time, take a short drive North. Then stop, shop and eat.

Wholesome Choice Market 18040 Culver Irvine, CA 92612 Open 7-11 daily (Food Court area open 11-8 daily) website

(The Irvine location is 84 miles from our East County home and the Anaheim location is 106 miles from here.  The Anaheim store is about 1/3 larger, formerly had been an Albertsons.  That location has a gelato area in the food court.  Really good gelato.)
