San Miguel de Allende (2022) – Dinner at The Restaurant and a Revisit to Lavanda Café

We headed out for dinner on our second (and last) night in San Miguel. As with our previous dinner I had taken a recommendation and made reservations for the meal. It was a nice, short stroll to dinner, just a short distance from the main square.

IMG_1795 (2)

Located in a restored mansion, The Restaurant apparently created quite a buzz when it opened in 2008, and has been credited with changing the food scene in San Miguel.

IMG_1797

The dining room is situated in the lovely courtyard (so many beautiful courtyards in SME) and the menu is somewhat globally focused.

IMG_1815

Since we had a late lunch we would stick to one of our favorite strategies and go with several appetizers and one main to make our meal.

We started with the Beef Carpaccio – $300/MX.

IMG_1804

The beef was tenderloin and quite lean, the truffled ponzu was quite pronounced in flavor and to be perfectly frank served better as a dressing for the nice crisp veggies and potato strings. Loved the addition of mint and cilantro on this.

The Charred Octopus ($300/MX) was indeed quite charred and a bit more chewy than we prefer.

IMG_1807

The overall bitterness of the charred Cephalopod marred the dish, though the tomatoes were sweet, with the perfect acidity, and the avocado puree helped balance out whatever heat that was provided by the habanero sauce.

I was intrigued by the Shrimp and Scallop dish ($510/MX), which featured curry dusted scallops and shrimp, and a cauliflower puree, with lentils.

IMG_1809

This was pretty good as the shrimp and scallops were perfectly cooked, the curry flavor was tempered and really harmonized with the creamy, nutty-lightly sweet mashed cauliflower. Loved the lentils which added a nice earthy flavor and textural contrast to the dish.

The most interesting item we ordered was the Cheese Plate ($285/MX).

IMG_1813

Yes, that's right, the cheese plate. Why? Well, it's all local/regional cheeses and except for the bleu cheese….I'm thinking that it's basically based on the type of edible mold from the area, all the others were pretty good.

IMG_1816  IMG_1817  The Missus enjoyed the wine selection and the service was professional and accommodating.

After dinner we strolled on over to the heart of SME, the Jardín Allende. The Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel looked lovely as the sun slowly set.

And unlike when we visited earlier, the church was open and wasn't having any special event going on, so we went to take a peek inside.

IMG_1822

After taking a quick look into the church, we crossed the street to the Jardin and had a seat and enjoyed the passage of time.

IMG_1824
IMG_1824

It was a nice evening for us.

The next morning we slept in for a bit. The owners of the B&B sent me a text and asked if we wanted them to make us breakfast. Since we were the only customers staying in the place we told them to not go thru the effort. Plus, the Missus wanted to try another pour over from Lavanda Café. So we headed on over a bit before they opened and were the first customers on this morning.

IMG_1834

The Missus got Her pour over which She enjoyed.

IMG_1833
IMG_1833

And we shared a Salsa Verde con Chicharron which the Missus enjoyed.

IMG_1835 IMG_1840 (2)  The eggs were perfectly cooked, nice tanginess, a bit of heat, a nice, hearty breakfast.

Lavanda Café de Especialidad

Since we were the only folks staying at our accommodation, we were told to just take our time, and that we could check out at noon instead of eleven. This would make things work out better for us in terms of getting to our next stop Guanajuato, which would take around 2 hours via Uber.

It was a pretty quiet morning around the Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel.

IMG_1841 (2)

Since the clock was just striking ten, we decided to check out the Museo de San Miguel de Allende right across the street that opened at ten.

IMG_1842

IMG_1843  IMG_1845 Most of this museum is dedicated to it's former resident; Ignacio Allende, who became a hero of the Mexican War on Independence. The Allende family was a wealthy family and the museum is housed in the family's former home.

Much of the family's living quarters have been restored and I especially like the replica of the original kitchen.

IMG_1844

IMG_1851

The first floor contains a history of the region as well.

IMG_1850
IMG_1850

It was a nice little diversion. And soon enough we had to head back to our room and finish packing; call our Uber, and then we were off…..

Next stop Guananjuato!

Thanks for stopping by!

Home Sweet Home Cafe (revisit) (Escondido)

mmm-yoso!!! is being written by Cathy today; Kirk and His Missus are vacationing.

The last time I wrote about Home Sweet Home Cafe was 2019-BC (before Covid-19).   Time for an update, because this oddly located Breakfast-Lunch mainstay has survived (for more than 20 years). 254A0335-A93B-4EFB-9B04-B8D0E4B117D3In the midst of a very industrial area of West Escondido, this nondescript restaurant storefront is open only for breakfast and lunch.  Parking is in front and along the side of the building.
1696DA64-BA79-4384-B63A-7214808A931D Many customers are 'regulars'.
1F17DF77-E83B-45B7-9C0E-6326E305EA5A1F17DF77-E83B-45B7-9C0E-6326E305EA5A1F17DF77-E83B-45B7-9C0E-6326E305EA5A1F17DF77-E83B-45B7-9C0E-6326E305EA5A1F17DF77-E83B-45B7-9C0E-6326E305EA5A1F17DF77-E83B-45B7-9C0E-6326E305EA5A1F17DF77-E83B-45B7-9C0E-6326E305EA5A The menu is served all day.

AB76CA8F-D769-4F32-8D46-98CD6BF1E9EA My usual order is a ham and egg sandwich ($12) on rye, made with a good amount of juicy, non-salty ham steak.  The plate comes with a choice of potato.  The home fries are excellent, can be made with or without bell peppers and/or onion.  Optional home made gravy on the potatoes ($2.50) is worth it- it is bacon gravy (not sausage); a wonderful version.
254A0335-A93B-4EFB-9B04-B8D0E4B117D3 F9D64BDE-7715-470E-9F75-0BA9FFA8905B The Eggs Benedict ($12.50) are made with perfectly poached eggs and plenty of ham on top of a toasted English muffin, covered in a home made, lightly lemony hollandaise- (we asked for added spinach on this day).  Instead of potato on the side, a request for corned beef hash was accommodated ($2.50).  A good quality canned hash and fried to a nice crisp.
82ABA8E0-A192-4190-BEE2-75A58D174469 On another visit, The Mister ordered the corned beef hash and eggs ($12) substituting homemade corned beef ($1)- it's just corned beef!  A wonderful, lighter carb breakfast.  (The hash browns were nicely crisped, the over easy eggs were perfect and even the sourdough toast is a better/nice sour quality).

One day, I'll do a lunch post. Soo was here in 2021 and had a burger, among other items.

San Miguel de Allende (2022) – Lavanda Café, El Mirador, and Mercado de Artesanías

We had a bit of walking scheduled for our full day in San Miguel de Allende, so I thought getting a "good start" in terms of breakfast and caffeine was important. A few blocks from our accommodation was a place that I had read about named Lavanda Café. One of the key elements about this café was that they featured specialty coffees for the "coffee snob" in  the household along with some good looking breakfasts for yours truly. I had also read that the place gets pretty busy with folks waiting in line. So, we made it a point to get there by 815, 15 minutes before opening time. There were two parties already in line when we arrived.

IMG_5152

Soon enough the place opened up. The folks working here were very warm and accommodating. We requested and got a table upstairs which was nice and relaxing; which seemed miles away from the busy dining room below.

IMG_1749

Looking at the coffee list the Missus immediately found something She wanted.

IMG_1746

And at 50$ MX – about $2.50/US, this is the cheapest Geisha we've ever got.

IMG_1745

And while She thought it to be on the "weaker side" with regards to Geisha, I thought it was still a bargain.

As for me….well, the Missus "strongly recommended" that I try the Café Lavanda, a lavender based pour over.

IMG_1741

I just didn't enjoy the strong floral tones in this.

The Missus wasn't very hungry so we decided to share one dish and went with the Cazuela (148 $MX – about $7.25/US).

IMG_5096  Snapseed  This was quite lovely and came with bread and butter. The egg was nice and perfectly done; still oozing with goodness, the rustic bacon was also quite good. The roasted tomatoes adding acidity and tangy touches. The red chili based "sauce" was rich but not overly spicy and we enjoyed the earthy mushrooms in the dish.

We enjoyed the service so much that we decided to return the next morning.

Lavanda Café de Especialidad
Calle del Dr Ignacio Hernandez Macias 87, Zona Centro,
37700 San Miguel de Allende, Mexico

After breakfast we headed right uphill for about three-quarters of a mile. The view during the walk was quite stunning. We got up to Salida Real a Querétaro and to the lookout named El Mirador.

IMG_5100

IMG_1757

And while the view from El Mirador was quite nice, we actually enjoyed the view from the street on the way up more.

IMG_1756

From here we headed north on Salida Real a Querétaro then took a left (downhill) at Capilla del Cavalio ("Calvary Chapel").

IMG_1761 (2)

Whenever we passed a building with the gates open, we'd take a peek at the courtyards; some of which were stunning.

IMG_1765

It was a nice little walk to the Mercado de Artesanías.

IMG_1767

IMG_1768  IMG_5102 This sprawling market is quite large with everything from jewelry to shawls to produce.

There seemed to be quite a few Ex-pats and tourists in the artisan portion. While the food, produce, and hot food areas seemed to have more locals.

IMG_5104
IMG_5104

IMG_5109
IMG_5109

We enjoyed our time visiting the market, but really didn't see anything that grabbed our attention. We also noticed that prices here were a bit higher than those in CDMX.

We weren't ready for our afternoon break yet and decided to make one more stop before getting some lunch……

Stay tuned!

Wednesday Walk – A Revisit to the Congress Cafe (Encuentro Cafe) and Visiting Heritage Park

**** Not much food in this post, just a revisit and a quick visit to Heritage Park

Over the pandemic it seems that I've been spending much more time in the Old Town area, exploring various sights, and sometimes grabbing something for breakfast before checking things out. In my opinion, things are kind of getting better for locals in Old Town, be it ever so humble.

On occasion I will grab a coffee from one of my three neighborhood coffee spots, then head on over to Old Town; there's always parking early in the morning, where I'll pick up an arepa from the Congress Cafe. Then walk on over to what has become one of my favorite spots; Heritage Park where I'll head up the drive and sit near the Coral Tree…..

IMG_9834

IMG_0054

Across the wonderful green open space, amongst the beautiful Victorian structures that were moved here. That's the Christian House below.

IMG_0055

I'll have my arepa; usually the Pabellon on the bench along with my caffeine fix for the day.

IMG_0051

I must say that that the Congress Cafe has been getting the fillings into a more harmonic balance for my taste. The nicely seasoned beef, the earthy black beans, the slightly milky cheese, and the sweet and starchy plantains. Yes, it's a calorie bomb; but heck, it's nice every once in a while. Plus, the staff at the Congress Cafe are so nice and welcoming.

For some reason, maybe word hasn't gotten out, Heritage Park is almost always empty when I visit. Once in a while I'll see dogs frolicking in the grass area, or perhaps a wedding rehearsal going on in the Temple Beth Israel.

Which was San Diego’s first synagogue. This is one of the two structures on site whose interior has been restored. The other being the Senlis Cottage.

IMG_9830

I found something interesting stated on the sign in front of the building.

IMG_9831

Stating that the temple also "became temporary quarters for many religious groups before establishing churches of their own." I went and took a look at the wonderful Heritage Park Tour Guide on the SOHO site and found this excerpt:

"Over time, the temple was used by other faiths, including the Biblical Institute of Spiritualism, the Volunteers of America Mission, and the Fraternal Spiritualist Church."

Which I found inspiring in light the divisive times we live in. If they could do it……..

You can read about the other structures and the history in SOHO's Heritage Park Cultural Tour Guide.

Thanks so much for stopping by!

Paragon Deli Cafe (Point Loma)

Paragon Deli Cafe closed in September 2024.  It is very much missed.

mmm-yoso!!! will be written by Cathy over this Independence Day weekend; Kirk is doing things with His Missus.

It was three years ago when Kirk first posted about Paragon Deli Cafe.   I had commented about something on the menu.
4EB1F681-8E60-4F4A-9655-CAAA30C789A5Recently, I had a craving for tomato stuffed with tuna salad, an old fashioned menu item rarely seen (and very missed), I checked out the menu at Paragon.067FF715-67C7-40A0-BD53-A9157846B07B  12D849CC-9DE9-4430-82E6-76C76D3AACB3 First, it was great to see they were still in business.  Second- the tuna stuffed tomato ($10.95) was still on the menu!7E9F9554-A11C-4290-874C-6211F0ECBBA8 A wonderful, refreshing, flavor filled version of this simple diner classic.  Served on top of a bed of lettuce with a house made dressing, this is a great lunch.

6C86AD6A-F552-4296-9016-7407272CF7BD as well as a cup ($5) (vegetarian pea) were enjoyed on visits.  The 'everyday' soups (tomato basil and chicken noodle) are priced $4 and $5.25.

Linguica, ham, roast beef, cheese, topped with a runny fried egg and sauce covering it all-including the fries.  The sauce-you can taste the beer as well as the whiskey.  Magical and it makes me understand why Kirk craved (then raved) about this wonderful sandwich.

You will notice on the menu the namesake Pacific Paragon Sandwich ($12.95), which originated at Marston's Tea Room.  Marston's was a downtown San Diego Department Store before being sold to The Broadway in 1961.  This sandwich won a 1960 American Restaurant Magazine award for "Best Sandwich".

Speaking of eggs, Paragon opens at 7 a.m., so there is breakfast.2A282A78-6238-4417-83B9-B5CDC129B8AA
486CD16F-6710-4A69-B379-1FC9E64825B8 The Croque Madame ($13.95) is made with French ham, gruyere and a house made béchamel.  Very tasty and filling.

Paragon Deli Cafe serves quality food and has the friendliest people working here; most are family.

Road Trip efficiency: Brodard (breakfast menu!) and Ochoa’s Chorizo

mmm-yoso!!! is being written by Cathy today, while Kirk is busy with work.

Almost every post I have written has been part of some other errand or event, even before the crazy surge in fuel prices.  Usually, the 'other part' of the trip is a separate post or remains unwritten.  The second part of this post will reveal a long time favorite stop.  39971DC4-979E-4B21-9C22-53C982F695B8 Kirk wrote about Brodard in 2013 and  I wrote about a visit to the original location in 2014 and the new location in 2019.
39971DC4-979E-4B21-9C22-53C982F695B8 Since Covid-19, we had driven here a few times, during the week to avoid crowds.
CDA71A7E-AAD3-4AE1-87BF-42D2FD8ED5DFCDA71A7E-AAD3-4AE1-87BF-42D2FD8ED5DF The menu has condensed, is easily wiped down and has no prices.
39FD4AEE-801F-4EA6-99A8-509A427DE661 Nem Nuong with pork (3 rolls, $7.50) is an automatic order here.  Brodard is  known for these rolls.  44B58B79-7A77-40E6-B4E9-B4440D8E3F40 Pretty much made to order (the rolls are constantly being prepared (because they are constantly being ordered) in an 'open kitchen' area), the flavorful grilled pork sausage with lettuce, cucumber, carrot, cilantro, daikon and chive wrapped with rice paper bundles with the crisp wonton in the center makes the rolls unique.  The warm, pork based sauce accompanying the rolls is just the perfect bit of savory.
A98781CD-638D-4192-9925-013F472F93EC The Banh Khot Tom- Moon Cake shrimp ($12.95) are mini crisp rice cakes flavored with coconut milk and turmeric.
6251C028-84D3-4082-8B6F-13D66A78BCAC Each is filled with one shrimp, mung beans and scallion.  Served with a variety of greens and a lime-chili-fish sauce for dipping, every delicate bite is filled with flavor.

We were here on a Saturday, around 8 a.m. and noticed this placard on the table-

94ABFBD5-2437-4A6D-B458-F689261B4E90 94ABFBD5-2437-4A6D-B458-F689261B4E90
A breakfast menu.  We had to.
E3289513-3166-4E83-B54F-A7BE16DF0339 The top item: Bo Ne Trung ($17).  Chateaubriand -with pate (on the top left of the platter), sate sauce, onions, mayonnaise and two eggs, served sizzling.
99974C00-D67F-40C8-9C16-B5C091367001 It's served with a piece of banh mi.  (You can sort of see the corse pate a bit better in this photo). (It is a *wonderful*, flavor filled pate).

8BD7802D-4E82-499D-8F0B-970E8AB61858 3E58320D-B1C2-4CD0-B893-DE2B29FE9A64  The egg whites crisped from the heat of the cast iron platter, while the yolks remained runny.  The beef tenderloin was quite perfect; buttery-tender with flavor complimented by the sate sauce (as well as occasional bites of onion and mayonnaise).

It looks like the breakfast menu has been available on weekends since the end of March.  We hope to go back soon to try the other items available on the special menu.

Champagne French Bakery Cafe

Thanks for stopping to read mmm-yoso!!!, a food blog.  Cathy is writing while Kirk is traveling.

We started driving, took an exit, kept driving, saw cars in a parking lot and stopped.  This is how The Mister and I find restaurants in unfamiliar areas in the early morning. B3533415-29B3-46F8-AE8F-75A92A8AFF5D I remembered seeing a Champagne Bakery in Del Mar when working for the Registrar of Voters, years ago, but never went there.  That location has closed.
DC76FA01-7F71-454B-9F08-896E5D3F53A3 Walking inside, there are three cases of freshly baked goods, with a kitchen menu along the back wall.
DC76FA01-7F71-454B-9F08-896E5D3F53A3 When I saw a Jesuite in the display case, I knew I had to order it.  I did not notice the giant poster on the wall until downloading this photo.
B3533415-29B3-46F8-AE8F-75A92A8AFF5D A Jesuite ($5.29) is a triangular, flaky pastry filled with frangipane (a soft, spreadable custard cream) and topped with sliced almonds and powdered sugar.  The pastry originated in France and the name refers to the triangular shape of a Jesuit's hat.  I knew of it but had never seen this particular pastry in San Diego.
B77564DB-4E0E-450A-AD55-B9B6012B5598 The pieces of flaky/crisp crust and creamy filling are delicious.  The coffee is Lavazza ($2.69).

But, we were here for breakfast.
B3533415-29B3-46F8-AE8F-75A92A8AFF5D The Mister chose the Breakfast Crépe plate with bacon and potatoes ($11.29).  Two fresh made, thin crépes filled with soft scrambled eggs and Swiss cheese.  The herbed, crisp roasted potatoes and smoky, quality bacon rounded out this meal.
B3533415-29B3-46F8-AE8F-75A92A8AFF5D I decided on the Le Metro Sandwich ($7.75).  Wow.  A folded omelet, tomato, avocado and herbed cream cheese served on a fresh baked, toasted whole wheat, seeded ciabatta.  Flavors, textures, quality.

I hope we find ourselves back in the area so we can try more of the menu.

Tom’s Famous Family Restaurant #23 (Escondido) (revisit)

Today, mmm-yoso!!! has another post about food for you to read.  It's written by Cathy, since Kirk is still on vacation.

I wrote about Tom's #23 last November and some things here are pretty much the same, but some changes have occurred.4C329104-D03B-4A62-8C86-2F87D81AB8C3 Walk up, order, pay…and you are asked where you will be sitting- the table numbers are tall and visible from the cash register; you aren't handed one to put on your table.  Why?994F16C1-90A5-4852-97F6-4E0E24B8C9BE Because your food will be delivered to your table by Tomcat!

A8CBC287-BC95-4AD7-A1EF-80EE30A6B89B  DEDDD3A9-EF32-4623-9187-D6FA26C4D7C6 The Mister ordered a chicken fried steak breakfast ($10.99), with home fries and over easy eggs.  Beautiful, orange-yolked eggs.  Perfectly crispy fried steak, wonderful sausage gravy, crispy. skin-on potato chunks. FC5503AD-8D5C-4AFD-91A3-BB560412D5EE Instead of toasted bread, He chose French toast ($1.99) Eggy, crisp with a fluffy interior.  Really nice.

A8CBC287-BC95-4AD7-A1EF-80EE30A6B89B I decided on a breakfast sandwich with ham on rye toast ($5.49).  I nice, thick slice of ham with lettuce, tomato and mayonnaise along with the folded egg omelet.

Good food and a fun time.

Tom's Famous Family Restaurant #23, 505 West 5th Avenue (at Centre City Parkway) Escondido 92025 Open daily 6 a.m.-10 p.m. Breakfast served all day

Ramona Cafe (Breakfast)

Thanks for stopping by to read mmm-yoso!!!, a food blog.  Today's post (again, written by Cathy) takes you a bit inland of this 4200 square mile County.

The Mister and I found ourselves in Ramona one morning, saw cars parked on Main Street and knew that we should stop.   EBA454FC-4E14-49B4-8939-FC72C8EB83F3 (FYI, there is parking and an entrance from the alley)
7EFF8B48-4D09-467D-8FFE-DD492DB521C9 The breakfast menu is on one page; lunch on the flip side.  Our friendly waitresses were familiar with just about every patron on this weekday.  (I did not notice the top left corner; next time).
238A3D1E-4414-45AA-9140-B0B3ECA312C0 The Mister ordered the Farmer's Omelet ($12.50) with home fries- and was asked if he wanted onions with the home fries(!).  Hash browns were not an option (which is nice; limited menu) and the fresh, cubed potatoes were crisped and nicely browned.
27FB6BB6-F945-4D70-A3CC-48E002435552 The three egg omelet was filled with cheddar cheese and ground breakfast sausage, topped with sausage gravy and more cheese.  A large amount of mild breakfast sausage which went well with the eggs and (mild) gravy.  We ended up adding pepper to the sausage halfway through.
75B5DEE9-0309-408A-8507-F1193816092C Of course, the only 'bread' that The Mister could consider ordering with this particular omelet was a fresh baked biscuit.  (There is also a choice of toast or English muffin).
2D04C797-EBFD-4FF9-9D13-501AA8271B83 The tall, fluffy-interiored, crisp crusted biscuit was quite large and arrived with its own container of honey.  A different type of hand made biscuit, which we shared.
238A3D1E-4414-45AA-9140-B0B3ECA312C0 I decided to order the California Eggs Benedict ($13.50) (a traditional Eggs Benedict with tomato and avocado for an additional $1).
7E6F63AB-C367-4A39-A7C5-0F67A1873C0A Nice amount of thicker cut smoked ham on top of a toasted English muffin topped with the avocado and tomato, a light-medium poached egg and house made hollandaise (not very lemon-y but a perfect consistency).

Another Covid-19 survivor.  We will be back.

Sam Woo BBQ (breakfasts) (again)

Thanks for stopping by to read mmm-yoso!!!, a food blog.  Cathy is writing while Kirk is vacationing.

The last time I wrote about Sam Woo was in October.  This is a regular stop for The Mister and myself just before we go shopping at 99Ranch Market, across the hallway; we don't want our purchases to be influenced by hunger.

C9B52F6E-3A33-4F0C-8A61-67E42316BA4A The price for breakfast has increased: now each item is $7.50 and hot coffee or hot tea is 70¢. The menu has remained the same.  How different from my first post about Sam Woo, in 2007 when each menu item was $3.20 and coffee or tea was 30¢.

27BB041E-ECDC-4299-9F66-A966B405DBA7 On this chilly morning, we chose the roast duck porridge which had some quite large pieces of fresh roasted duck. 256F35EC-1D7D-48B7-88BF-7B4EE5B039C6The Chinese donut is still $2 and is just the add-in that the porridge needs.
27BB041E-ECDC-4299-9F66-A966B405DBA7 The BBQ pork lo mein is always a good choice.  The pork is tender and wonderfully flavored; broth, noodles and bok choy round out this plate.

Always a filling, tasty and satisfying meal here.

Sam Woo BBQ 7330 Clairmont Mesa Blvd San Diego 92111 Open daily 9 a.m.-9:30 p.m. Cash only

3B6DD4A2-A4A7-4E82-B433-E951F6B3A860 You have to ask for condiments; the white pepper and red chili sauce as well as some soy sauce are sometimes needed halfway through-after eating the food as prepared.
