Chili Cheese Fries- Compare and Contrast…

mmm-yoso!!! is a blog.  About "food".  Sometimes we stretch the definition of "food" and "meals" we ate.  This is one of those times.

Hi. Cathy here again, with a kind of "research" food post. All done with the purpose of informing you, our dear readers, about some sort of food item… 

The following are ranked in ascending order.

It seems everyone is offering chili cheese fries as a side, or as a meal lately and I thought I would give you my take on this kind of meal or side dish. Dsc01593_2 So, lets start out with the "original" in a sense…Weinerschintzel. As you can see, in order to fully enjoy the meal at "Der Schnitz", we indulged in corn dogs and a chili dog (the beef one: I went crazy with my tax refund this year and decided to spring for it) topped with mustard and onions. Let’s just say the chili is…um…’meaty’, with many chunks of the same shape and size of ‘meat’ in it….very manufactured. You can see the cheese is not melted (but that eventually happened) and the fries are…skinny and not crispy. Not my favorite. But, for $1.59, what should I expect? I do love the Tastee Freeze ice cream and shakes here, though. 

Dsc01617_2 Del Taco has jumped into the fray and is offering a $1 off coupon to try the Chili Cheddar fries, making the final price about $1.50.  I do like the Del Taco quesedillas because they are made with Cheddar…and the cheese part of this meal was indeed excellent.  The fries stayed crispy.  The chili was OK, not too spicy ( I ended up adding some hot sauce after a while) and the overall effect was that I thought if I was at Del Taco, I should get something a bit more ‘Mexican’ in style to eat here…although, as you can see, I got a burger to round out the flavors…

The fries stayed crispy, the cheese is real and good…and the chili- it is hot dog chili, Coney Island chili…*really* good chili.  I could eat a bowl of this stuff with some oyster crackers and be *very* happy. 

As a side order, $2.79- and worth it.  But, I saw that you can substitute for an additional charge with any Combo meal.  Lovely stuff.Chilicheesefries_001

I could not help but mention a similar "meal" based with fries that you can purchase for a mere $2.89 at In-N-Out.  It is the only reason you get the hermetically sealed fork/salt napkin packet.

Animal Fries.

Not on the menu you look at.  You must know there is a "Secret Menu", right ?(Hint: Google "In-N-Out Secret Menu")  Chilicheesefries_002

Why do these fries taste superior? In-N-Out does not have a freezer.  The potatoes are cut fresh- you can watch the people doing it before they dump them into the fryer.

The fries are topped cheese.  It melts.  Then topped with grilled onions.  Crispy, burned grilled onions…so that sort of helps with a "chili" flavor, since onions are part of the base of chili…right??

Then all of it is topped with the sauce that is normally used on the burgers.  Pretty much a nice, fresh Thousand Island-ish sauce…relish and that pinky-peachy salad dressing.

All good.  Some better.  Hope you are having a nice middle of the week.

So, anyhow, if you own a home in San Diego County and don't have an escrow account, you have to pay your Real Estate Tax to the County Assessor's office.  If you actually drive to the Office, this place is in the plaza right next door.  It is new and a franchise. Editor's Note:  There is a location on College Aveneue near SDSU and also one on Mission Boulevard in the beach area, according to the website link below. Cathy's Note:  It was new to me.

This is a copy of the fax menu.   

Kind of a Subway sandwich shop with pita (white or wheat) or put all  the toppings onto lettuce and make it a salad.

Standard toppings include: shredded lettuce, romaine, spinach, tomatoes, onions, green peppers, cucumbers, pickles, black olives, pineapple, pepperocini, sprouts, mushrooms and jalapenos.

Cheese choices are: Cheddar, American Swiss, Feta and Parmesan.

Sauces are: Cesar, Tzatziki, ranch, spicy vinaigrette, mayo, BBQ, sour cream, hot sauce, teriyaki, catsup, mustard (yellow, honey or Dijon), salsa, horseradish Dijon and chipotle.

The various meat pitas to choose from are: gyros, turkey, Black Forest ham, roast beef, chicken breast, bacon, chicken souvlaki and tuna .  Pretty much any combination is available.  Prices are around $6.25.

For an added charge you can get hummus, babaganoush, double meat or double cheese.

My only mistake was treating the pita with gyros like it was a pita with gyros.

You can see it in the white bread here, not as stuffed as the whole wheat chicken souvlaki.

Pitapit_004 I only wanted gyros with feta, onion, tomato and tzatziki and that was what I got.  The meat and also the sauce was kind of dry:  the pita bread had a wonderful fresh flavor though, as did the meat.  I should have chosen more toppings.  The meat was flavorful, but not juicy.  It was pre-sliced thin and fried until warm and almost crispy, so no juiciness that sometimes happens with an unevenly cut off the spit piece of meat was evident.

The sandwich was, however, not sparse in the amount of meat on it.  Very filling.

I suppose I complain because I compare.

The Mister got the chicken souvlaki with feta, lettuce,  tomatoes, green pepper, cucumber and the "secret" sauce (which is a spicy vinaigrette).  This was an excellent sandwich that was full, moist and tasty.

I will go back, but will more or less think of the food here as sandwiches in a bread pocket rather than a pita, per se.  Despite the name above the door.

Hello. Hope you aren’t too traumatized that Kirk is away from San Diego for a little while.  I am just trying to keep the blog going, with talks of food I ate.

The Mister and I got a gift card from a friend for Christmas and the other night we were hungry and didn’t want to spend any cash, so we ventured into "downtown" Santee and went to Mimi’s, a nationwide chain.  We had never been and had not heard anything bad about it, and quite a few people had told us they liked it here.  We wanted to try everything on the menu, and decided on a variety of things to share. Almost as soon as we sat down, a basket of warm, fresh crusty white bread and some slices of warm date nut bread and a serving of butter were placed on our table.   We tasted as we perused the menu.

The bread is excellent, as is the date nut loaf.  Both very fresh.  The date nut loaf is moist and the nuts are crispy and the dates are not sticky.

I noticed the other tables also had mismatched colors of plates, but the silverware did all match…unlike some other restaurants we have been to. Dsc01203_2

I wasn’t sure what to order and the soup and petite salad "Small Bite" looked good ($9.39)   It came with a choice of freshly baked muffin, so a carrot raisin nut muffin was ordered.  It came out fresh from the oven, had good, deep flavor, a crispy crust (I like crusts and edges of breads, casseroles, and just about everything I eat).Dsc01204_2 It was also..um..huge.

I chose the French Onion Soup , because I could smell the cooked onions when I walked in the door of the restaurant and suddenly had a craving for it. Dsc01205_2
The broth was deep and rich and tasted as if it had been simmered for days to get every last taste of beef from a bone. 

It was topped with a nutty tasting Gruyere cheese that was melted and burned so perfectly.  Of course under the cheese and on top of the soup was a nicely toasted slice of bread that stayed crispy for a while until it absorbed some broth.  This was an excellent soup.

We ordered the golden fried calamari "fritti" style ($ 8.49) which you will note is not on a current menu since the menu changes "seasonally", which, near as I can tell, is every six weeks or so.  Fried calamari tossed with garlic butter, green onions and sliced cherry and banana peppers.  It was served with a citrus based remoulade and was very, very good.  If it is on the menu when you go, do try it.Dsc01206

The Mister got the Half Pound Burger ($7.79) with optional onion rings for an additional 50¢ as the side.  He asked for it to be cooked medium rare, and it was! (There has been much frustration when we ask for medium rare and the meat is never cooked that way)

Served with lettuce,tomato, pickle and a thousand island sauce, on a fresh toasted hearty, nicely chewy white bread bun, it was excellent.

The salad I chose was the Bleu cheese and walnut salad, which had dried cranberries, bacon, tomatoes and strawberries in it.  It was tossed with a balsamic vinaigrette and though it looked small, was very filling.

Mimis_001_3 Last week I went to lunch with a friend (Mrs. L) and ordered the Pot Roast sandwich for lunch ($8.99).  Warm pot roast served on a warm sourdough baguette simply made with lettuce, tomato and mayonnaise.  Excellent flavors!  I opted for the 50¢ extra onion rings, which were batter fried crispy and had excellent flavor.  Sweet onions…

Mrs. L is so kind and thoughtful and decided I needed dessert…but to share, you know, and she let me pick.  So as soon as I saw Bananas Foster Mud Pie ($5) listed, I smiled…

Oh yes, it is as large as it looks- more than 6 inches high at its peak.  Banana-vanilla swirl ice cream, with sliced bananas in it; caramelized pecans, a graham cracker crust, served with a sliced fresh banana, real whipped cream and carmel sauce.  Excellent.  We could not finish it all, although I did finish up the bananas and whipped cream…

All in all, the food here has been excellent, fresh and has an attention to detail.  I do not consider it to be "Sysco-ised" at all and have liked everything I have tried.  Many people tell me they come here for a sit down breakfast (it opens at 6 a.m.) and I do know it is a french roast coffee served.   I will return and won’t be afraid.

Road Trip Day Seven: Home! New Mexico to California

mmm-yoso!!! is a diary about food we group of friends eat.  Cathy and her Mister have been eating their way across America for last week or so.  OK…in actuality, she is home and posting .  The first four posts were sent pretty much in real time, from the road.  These last three have been done with slightly less frenziness.   She has slept in her own bed…and will again…as soon as she hits "send"…

OK.  Almost done…starting this post early with photos from our last trip and hope the same wonderful, tacky sights, or more, are viewable from the car.Dinosaur_city_2

Dinosaur City.  Some sort of recreational huge mass of land, on both sides of the Interstate 40.  There are tons of these statues closer to the road, to lure you in…

Tacky2 About 6 miles east of Dinosaur City is this "Pseudo Dinosaur City" ()I think it is called"Stewart's" or something like that)which sold an inordinate number of fossils and dusty geodes and old, dusty things two years ago.  I loved this place…they were trying to sell the business off then…

A meal in Arizona- Blake's Lotaburger…eh. Dsc01002_2I got a Lotaburger, no cheese and The Mister got the grilled turkey sandwich and we got a cherry shake. Nothing special. Just food. We have not ever stopped at a Lotaburger, and will give it one more try next year. There are quite a few locations in Arizona and they seem popular.  Perhaps we were spoiled by Blimpy's and Culvers… …now Whataburger, in Texas…that is good…but we didn't stop there this trip. Next year, though…

The last evening meal while traveling-(end of Day Six, if you are keeping track) Dsc00947_2 Dsc00945_2Yes! The Big Texan!!! From about 200 miles away (~4 hours of driving), the signage starts…"Free 72 ounce Steak!" Dsc00948Of course, there is an asterisk…You have to consume this entire meal in ONE HOUR, on a stage, Dsc00949while people watch (and take photographs). If you don't finish it, it costs $72…and a major bellyache for the next day or two or three…

Or, you can order from the GIANT sized menu (dollar bill at top used for size reference). Dsc00954I got the 18 ounce boneless rib eye ($21.59), cooked rare/medium rare, along with a side of mashed(that had brown gravy on the bottom and white gravy on top).  The steak is marinated perfectly and need nothing added. Dsc00952_2The Mister got the rack of spare ribs ($16.99) with a side of mac and cheese. The ribs are a full rack, meaty, the sauce has a nice kick. Spicy heat with a touch of garlic.

Dsc00951_2But, you really get two sides and The Mister chose his other side as a salad with a *really good* blue cheese dressing and mine was (and always is) sliced tomatoes with raw red onions. Of course, there are also yeasty rolls are always light, warm and perfect…and apparently not photographed.

Other than that, we merely stopped at a bunch of Starbucks locations on the trip…and have 18 receipts to prove it.. Dsc00980_2 Dsc01022and stopped to take a photo of The Blue Hare….

So, that was our annual vacation, across America.  Three days driving there, three days being there and three days driving back.

I hope all of you enjoyed it as much as we did! We'll do it all again next year.

Road Trip Day Six: Missouri to someplace in New Mexico

mmm-yoso!!! is a food blog.  Today, again, it is Cathy writing from the road ( written a few days ago; I am actually home-it is the magic of blogging), about food and other stuff.   Really.   Cathy and The Mister are driving across the Continental USA.   You can too, vicariously,  from the comfort of your home (or work) computer.

Dsc00875_2By nightfall, we were passing the Arch in St Louis again. Sorry the photo is so blurry.  The flash does not do its job from inside a moving car.

So. Sometimes hotel advertise "Breakfast Bar Included". This means cold cereal, oatmeal packets, a toaster, coffee, hot water and a juice machine. If you are lucky, there are bagels and in the condiment section there may be cream cheese and peanut butter.  No, no photos…HOWEVER, Quality Inns advertise a "Hot Breakfast Bar"..whoo hoo! Dsc00889

In addition to the items listed above, there is fresh fruit and, in the case of this location, (somewhere West of St. Louis), are sausage biscuits, regular plain biscuits, sausage gravy(really good sausage gravy) …and… Dsc00890_2The ubiquitous, infamous, make your own commercial waffle machine…oh yes. You get a cup of batter, and pour it onto the hot machine, close it, flip it and it has a beeping timer (or light in some cases) so you know when it is done. Dsc00892One note: there is usually a can of non-stick spray, or a bowl of melted butter next to the machine…it helps to put that on before pouring…

Anyhow, those waffles are sooooo good. Crispy light exterior and pefectly cooked interior. There seem to be two batters when you encounter these commercial machines and in the Midwest, the more sour, buttermilk based, "malted" batter is always available..and when you get more West/southwest, there is a sweet batter…

ANYHOW…we drove and Dsc00895saw the first of *many* of the trucks hauling Christmas trees out West. We see these on the way home and know it is going to be Christmas…you can see snow on top of this load…yes, Thanksgiving is over and life goes on. Dsc00918

They use the milkshake mix and…egg nog instead of milk…oh. Steak. Burger. In the Midwest. This means a chicken fried steak. Excellent. Juicy. Just the right amount of spice in the batter. Topped with lettuce, tomato and mayonnaise.

Located in the Midwest (the closest one on the trip is in Joplin, MO), this "institution" is open 24/7, serving breakfast every one of those hours…but, nope. The Mister was burger-ed out. Dsc00935_2He got the fried fish plate, I got a single steakburger. No cheese. Dsc00934You get a choice of two of seven sides with each platter. We each got a salad, and I also took a cup of chili (with beans) and The Mister took cole slaw. Very good food. I like the flavor of the meat in the burger- like a Rally’s Big Buford. We also got an egg nog shake ( as a taste comparison) and… there was no comparing the Braums to Steak and Shake, even though I do like the shakes here…the S&S one had an artificial undertone and I mostly tasted the nutmeg sprinkled on top. 

The place was slammed, and our Very Nice Waiter(one of only three inside the busy restaurant) told us we were the quietest people in there. I told Him that we had been sitting in a car next to each other for five days and would rather listen to other people talking than each other…

Oh. Another aside. XM satellite radio channel 59-LED, the Zeppelin Channel…very cool.

So, last night…(did you read that post?)(I didn’t finish our evening meal) Dsc00864Culver’s.  Home of the Butter Burger. Dsc00865_2 Major Midwest chain. I got a single, ($2.39), The Mister got a double with cheese($4.49 , the fries came with (a combo meal: also included a medium drink))…and..a side of Cheese Curds ($3.29). yep, we were in Illinois. Midwest. Fried cheese. Not those appetizer sicks of mozzarella, but curds, dipped and fried and wonderful. Oh the Butter burgers- *the best* fast food burger, ever. Yes, BUTTER BURGER. Of course it has flavor. Juicy. Dsc00866 Culvers’ makes frozen custard. Wonderful, rich, egg based frozen custard. they make it many times a day. It is wonderful. This is a small, $1.69. They have a different Flavor of the Day as well as chocolate available.  In the summer, people come in just for a frozen treat.

Yes, I wrote about two egg nog shakes and a frozen custard, and fried foods (and two small salads, remember)…We will be home soon.  The diet begins then…or January First…whatever…

Road Trip-Day Three: Joplin, MO-Detroit, MI

mmm-yoso!!! is the food blog.  Cathy is blogging about food and some other stuff this Thanksgiving week.

Hi.  Yes the third day in the car with The Mister, one small dog and one cat.  We do this.  Annually.  You get to peek in and see what it is like, sort of.   I would like to take this time to let everyone know that XM stereo radio is the most wonderful invention, ever.

One small note. Dsc00734yesterday (or the day before-it is all a blur), we had passed under the World’s Largest McDonald’s, which crosses over the Will Rogers Turnpike in Oklahoma. Usually we stop- as there is fuel sold on either side- but we did not need to this time. I’ll post more on the way back. I know someone may have noticed… In the morning, we stopped at the Russell Stover/Whitman’s Chocolates "Superstore"…the adversting has changed; it used to be an "outlet" and does sell some candies in a "scratch and dent/basic box style, as we,, as items in the fancy wrapped boxes for less than list price. My brother happens to crave the butter toffee almond sticks…and I had a few of the samples offered. They also sell Blue Bunny ice creamDsc00758_2 cream in the store- not that I wanted any; it was very windy and about 50 outside..ooohhh…cold (for us from California)…. We ended up stopping at a Panera in Rolla, MO so I could post yesterday, and then driving on. Then, the outskirts of St. Louis and a Local Chain- Lion’s Choice. Dsc00768 Dsc00766 You can have the beef on your sandwich cooked to your liking if it is available (you know, they do run out of rare at some point in the day) although you would have to wait for ‘well done’, since most of the beef is rare to medium rare… and the meat on the sandwich is topped with a seasoning salt- but it is not too salty; in this case, we asked for it to be cooked as rare as possible…and the bread is toasted and buttered….in the photo, the top is the large, bottom is a small…there is au jus available (it is not at all salty) as well as horseradish sauce….it isthe most wonderful roast beef sandwich, ever. If you see a Lion’s Choice, you should stop and partake.Oh, the small was $2.79 and large was $3.29 and that is a small fries.

Then, seemingly soon, we were in Illinois…and this sign, which we always see off the side of the road…Foot High Pies. Dsc00774 You can see the building used to be a Stuckey’s. Dsc00778 We got a slice of chocolate and one of banana- also available are coconut and lemon. $4 each slice and $14 for the whole pie… it is wonderful and so fresh. The restaurant makes great food…menu on wall in back…We will have to eat there next time….

Road Trip-Day Two: Albuquerque, NM-Joplin, MO

mmm-yoso!! s a food blog, with diversions.  It is a Holiday week.  Cathy is silly and blogging it.  Enjoy.

Hi.  It is me again, with another day of my life, with food.  Online.  Really.  The Mister and I are driving, taking phDsc00707_6otos, downloading and sharing another day on the road, driving across America. We stopped for fuel at a Loves Truck Stop, where we have seen (forever) "Chester's Fried Chicken" being sold and decided, for the sake of the blog, to try a three piece combination (three breast strips, three potato wedges and a roll for $3.59)…wow=excellent light breading with a nice heat spice kick. We also ordered a medium fried chicken livers($3.29) Very juicy, fresh and the breading was spiced nicely. Justg a bit of heat and salty. Really. We figured this would not be good and were glad how wrong we were.

It turns out that only 30 Loves fuel stations also offer Chester's, and I think we saw them all. The Dsc00713_2_2 closest one to San Diego is on I-10 just after you get onto it when driving from Gila Bend to Phoenix. It is *really* good fried chicken. When The Mister and I drive through Amarillo every year, w stop at a Classic American Art Installation project,Cadillac Ranch. It changes daily, by the participation of the viewers of the art. Here is a photo when we visited two years ago…

You can see there are ten older Cadillac cars buried inthe ground, and spray paDscn0563_3_2inted randomly. Last night, it was after sunset. There was a half moon out. The cars are a good 1/2 mile from the road. The Mister and I walked. We left, and you know we had been there…

This morning- Waffle House! A staple restaurant in Mid America. Each stand alone building has 9Dsc00730_10_4 Dsc00726_2_3 booths and 5 barstools at the counter. The menus are the same. Basic breakfast served 24 hours a day, served up by efficient grill cooks and pleasant waitresses who all call you "Dear" no matter your age.

The Mister ordered a bit of everything, with a waffle, eggs over easy, hash browns with cheese and Dsc00723_3 sasuage. I got the cheese scrambled eggs with grits and bacon …and, of course, raisin toast, which is served with apple jam.

Road Trip-Day One: San Diego, CA- Albuquerque, NM

mmm-yoso is a food blog-a diary of what a bunch of friends eat.  Occasionally we explain why we happen to be eating whatever, wherever.  Cathy is merely blogging what she usually does at this time of the year.

Hi.  Yes, you read the title correctly.  This is a blogging of what The Mister and I do for Thanksgiving every year -except for last year-Halloween06_002_2

because I tripped, fell, was in a cast TO MY SHOULDER for about 7 weeks, and so driving a manual transmissioned car for days at a time was out of the question.

Yes, days at a time.  Because of the ability to transmit from my iBook directly to the internet, when there is a connection, you-all of you reading this- get to share in a drive almost all the way across the Continental United States, and back.  With food and sights.

So, really late Sunday afternoon, The Mister and I left the house, grabbing one cat (he is diabetic and needs insulin twice a day), one dog (her 'sister' died a few weeks ago and so I am trying to pay a little bit more attention to her), my auto reload Starbucks card ( a wonderful thing; once the balance gets below $15, my AmEx credit card automatically reloads this one with another $20), a small suitcase and jumped in the car and started driving…we left 7 cats, 3 dogs and three large birdcages of parakeets, finches and canaries for my Dear Neighbor, Ms. N, to play with for a few days…aDsc00644_8nd we started driving.

We didn't do much in the way of eating, except for In-N-Out in Yuma (sorry, ed) Dsc00650 I apologize for the post looking kind of odd; I haven't ever posted using a Mac; only the PC… So, when we stopped for fuel, we saw this, leaving a gas pump:Dsc00652_5 Absolutely the *coolest* dune buggy.. Dsc00646_37 The scenery leaving Campo, with the electric generating windmills was beautiful. We spent the night in Camp Verde, AZ at a Quality Inn and had a simple-do it yourself breakfast Dsc00657 Dsc00658I had a hard boiled egg, a toasted bagel with butter and grape jelly, an orange and some oatmeal, as well as orange juice and hot tea (Only buying coffee at Starbucks and have taken photos of each cup we bought…at four different Starbucks as of this posting. When we got to Winslow, AZ, we saw Sonic! and we had to… Dsc00670 Dsc00666 We each got a Brakfast sandwich- on Texas Toast. Egg, cheese and bacon for me, sausage for The Mister. Also some tots and -oh yes- the fried macaroni and cheese nuggets… Sonic is a Drive in, much like was common in the 1950's. You cannot walk inside and have to order from the meDsc00673nu board voice system next to where you park. Then a live person comes out with your order and takes your money and gives you change. They make great burgers, hot dogs and shakes. You'll see soon enough. Other sites we have seen today includ the Worlds Largest Kokopelli: Dsc00663 and just beautiful scenery of the American West. The Steam Table at 99Ranch- dinner!

mmm-yoso is the name of the blog.  Welcome.  Cathy is talking about food while Kirk is on vacation.  I think he’ll be back tomorrow, though.

Hi.  Me again.  Kirk is still away.  I imagine since this is the Friday before Memorial Day weekend, most of you are away and not reading this post until you are back at work.  Hope it was nice for you.

It appears, through the magic of blogging, that The Mister and I pretty much wander about town with a camera and eat out a lot at sit down waiter/waitress type places.  Actually, The Mister and I cook at home a lot, and Kirk and His Missus cook at home also…look at the recipe index at the bottom of the left column of this page.

Then there are the lazy days.  Pick it up and bring it home…or pick it up and eat it there.  99Ranch has that steam table area of the store.  We were there tonight.  99ranch_005

Two bags of steam tray food.  It is three meals for the two of us, easily.

The whole fried or soy sauce chicken is on sale this week for $3.99.   They will chop it up for you.  This is the fried one.99ranch_004  The skin wasn’t as crispy as I would like, but the chicken meat is moist and flavorful and…it is only $3.99. It comes with a sauce that has 5 spice in it.

We got a two item combo($4.25)99ranch_002 with steamed rice

The spicy salted fish and the soy sauce pork with soy sauce hard boiled eggs.  The spicy salt and pepper crust is wonderful, light and crispy, as is the (mostly boneless) flaky fresh fish.  The pork had a nice layer of fat on it , was soft and tender and flavorful and was not overly soy-sauce salty. The egg was nicely hard boiled and fresh and not salty either.  A good, deep, rich soy flavor. I just got an email from Bill and he said it may be brown sugar sauce with fish sauce, which, upon opening the fridge and tasting it cold (at 4:40 in the morning) 99ranch_2 tastes very slightly sweet and again not salty.  So it couldbe brown sugar and fish sauce. Let’s just say it is good pork and hard boiled egg in a thin brown colored sauce. The meat is tasty as is the egg and we liked it.

The combos come with soup (they gave us two- it was almost closing time). Today it was egg drop, with for some reason, one piece of corn in each bowl, and the requisite spork to use for both the soup and meal, although chopsticks are available.

We also wanted to try the chicken roll ($3)99ranch_003_2

Ground chicken and rice with light spices wrapped in fried tofu skin. Very nice here.  It comes with a spicy sweet and sour sauce.

We also got the 4 piece ‘summer roll’ from the bakery area ($3.99)99ranch_001 . Rice paper wrapped around chilled rice noodles, shrimp, lettuce and mint with a peanutty dipping sauce- always refreshing.

That’s it.  Not too exciting a post, eh? Well,you know, sometimes I just like to eat some fresh food without having to cook. Not everything in my life is overly interesting, although I do share with you when it is.

There are Monday-Friday specials for $2.29 at lunch.  Oh and breakfast specials also.  Always fresh.  There is a large eating area adjacent to the steam tray line.  Across from the steam trays they sell beverages and soups.  All of the 99 Ranch markets have a steam tray food area. Try it.  It’s good.

Chow King- Great Filipino Fast Food in San Diego

mmm-yoso!!! is the blog.  I am one writer of  the blog.  I am Cathy and I am *so* Caucasian as is The Mister.  Kirk and His Missus are  Asian; they can describe stuff better than I can, but still, I know what I like.  Here goes!

Hello one more time.  Chow King is the #1 Oriental Fast Food chain in the Philippines.  It has been around since 1985 and in 2000, became a wholly owned subsidiary of Jolibee, the *other* major fast food chain in the Philippines.  In fact if you Google "Chow King" The first things that pop up are the Chow King website, Wikipedia with a description of Chow King and Jolibee.

Of course, being as Caucasian as I am, I had not heard of Chow King before seeing it in front of Seafood City.

So, it is fast food.  Bright, happy, formica’d tables and chairs and a nice menu above the cash registers.Chowking

Here is a take home menu you can use to phone in an order so you can just walk in a pick up.

We decided to try a bit of everything basic. The Mister tried the "personal size" beef noodle soup with a pork Siopao. ($5.25)Chowking_001

The noodles were eggy and not overcooked; the beef was tender, had some fat on it (which we like) as in stew meat ; the broth was rich and very nice, and the vegetables were put in at the end, so were still crispy fresh/not mushy.

The Si0pao was:1. Huge and B) tasted fresh with lots of shredded pork  on the inside. I forgot to take a photo of the cross section.  It was not a skimpy fill at all. A nice, slightly peppery (not very sweet) sauce came with the bun and complimented the flavors, but was not necessary.

There were some large ads by the cash register for a new "hot" beverage- a Taho- Chowking_004 ($2.99 for a "classic"- I had ube added for another 25¢).  I thought  when I saw "new" and "hot" it just meant a neat drink.  It was a hot drink- hot soy, with boba on top and sweet ube on the bottom.  It was really nice and I got my soy fix for the day.  Yes, I said "hot" and "boba" in the same sentence; we will explore the entire concept of boba in a later post.

Anyhow..so I wanted to try the fried chicken, called "Mandarin fried chicken".  Just a two piece box, with rice and a choice of sides( Bihon, Canton {egg noodles}, egg roll or pot sticker) I wanted to see how the Bihon (rice stick noodles) were prepared here. ($4.95) Chowking_003

Oh my- that fried chicken is great!.  A light batter, crispy with mild spices, the chicken meat has such flavor and is moist.  If this place was closer to home, I would be buying the ‘party pack’ every chance I got, and eating it in the car on the way home (and I drive a manual transmissioned car, which would not be a good thing).  The rice was good, the Bihon was fresh and good with several small shrimp in it- a nice surprise. This two piece meal was quite filling. 

A lot is offered in "party pack" or "value pack" sizes, which say they are good for up to eight persons.   There is also a Breakfast menu- part of which is only available from 7-11 a.m., but another part which is available all day ( I know Dale was talking about longanisa at a good price in a note to Kirk the other day- the all day Kings Breakfast  for $4.75 includes 2 main items, plus scrambled eggs, plus rice and longanisa and boneless bangus {milkfish}).

The Mister and I decided to splurge and see what the Halo Halo here was likeChowking_005 for our dessert.

Excellent- only $3.25 and made with crushed ice, ice cream, a nice blend of canned sweet beans, canned fruit, coconut gel and what seemed to be toasted rice.  It was one of the better Halo Halo’s I have had.

All in all, I was surprised at how fresh and non-Sysco’d the food was, even though it must be in some way standardized.  I know there is a Jolibee just down the way, also on Mira Mesa Boulevard and another set of Jolibee/Chow King restaurants in National City {both are on East Plaza Boulevard}, so I would imagine the supply truck hits all of them with the same or similar stuff regularly. 

The Mister and I were the only Caucasian people in the restaurant and, even though it was a  busy Sunday, the Manager came by several times to ask us if we had any questions and was extremely friendly and helpful as was the Gentleman who took our order at the register.   It was a very enjoyable experience, with food, that did not seem to be fast food at all.
