Phuong Trang (revisits)

Thanks again for dropping by mmm-yoso!!!, food blog.  Kirk is catching up at work, Ed (from Yuma) is catching up at home and today Cathy is catching up with a post of many visits to the same place. {Admittedly this was because it is air conditioned and this summer was brutal}

Go to the top left corner of this blog.  In the box under the words "Site Search", fill in Phuong Trang.  There are more than 170 results: we've written about it a lot.

Phoung Trang is the place where The Mister and/or I take people who are new to Vietnamese food.  Kirk has called the food here 'middle of the road' and not offensive.   The selections are multiple, food is good, prices are fair, the restaurant is clean and almost every table orders the wings. IMG_7061The signage is new, as Kirk mentioned in this August post.IMG_8748The interior has not changed and is kept very clean. IMG_1590IMG_1588The Mister and I order hot tea with every meal; 75¢ per person, made with loose leaves. The jasmine flavor is brisk and bright. Once you order, the proper tableware is brought out.IMG_8750Pho ($6.50) comes with the usual sides.  That sauce is for my whole fish (2nd photo below).IMG_8754The broth has a light anise flavor, the meats are plenty, flavorful, tender.  Noodles are usually not in a clump and a regular/small bowl is filling.IMG_8756IMG_8764The whole fish here is reasonable ($8.95), fried properly with seasoning, quite large and meaty.IMG_0796IMG_0797  Mi Dac Biet ($8.50) is the House Special Noodle Soup (in this case, mi-egg noodle instead of rice noodle).  A wonderful chicken broth and filled with calamari, shrimp, ground and cha siu pork, imitation crab and chicken.  It's served in the extra large bowl and can be a meal to share. IMG_0798IMG_0803Banh Uot Dac Biet ($8.75), steamed rice noodles with steamed bean sprouts, shredded cucumber, carmelized onion, garlic slices and fish sauce with the 'Dac Biet' meat combination of Vietnamese ham, salami, shredded pork and char grilled pork.  This is very refreshing and a nice change from Bun dishes, with a different noodle and served on a plate without lettuces under the noodle.IMG_7047The Bo Bia ($4.75) can be a meal.  Chinese sausage and fried egg with lettuce, carrots, dried shrimp, jicama, basil, crushed peanuts and chili sauce wrapped in rice paper is a much more interesting selection than some of the other rolls here or anywhere.IMG_7056One recent order was Mi Xao Ga (chicken and vegetables with crispy noodle) ($8.25), which has become a new craving.IMG_7053 One summer resolution has been trying Bo Tai Chanh (lemon beef salad) ($10.50) whenever I see it on a menu. The version here is served over lettuce, is different than other versions and was, in comparison, kind of dull.  The vegetables were fresh, there was a definite lemon flavor to the thinly sliced beef, but I wouldn't order it from here again.IMG_1599Finally in September we succumbed to every table around us and ordered the Canh Ga Chien Bo (garlic chicken wings with butter)…but just a half order ($5.75).  These were crispy and had good flavor with a good meat to skin ratio.IMG_1595Because we enjoy the crispy noodles, here's a photo of Mi Xao Bo (crispy noodle with beef and vegetables) (also $8.25).  It's just as good with any of the meats…because, you know…fried noodle.IMG_1594IMG_1597The newest discovery made here was from the appetizer menu- Cha Dum (steamed meatloaf) ($7.25) served with shrimp chips, the steamed seasoned ground beef mixed with glass noodles, peanuts and peas is a wonderful combination of flavor and texture.

It's been fun to try out new to us menu items. I hope your week is going well.

Pho Hiep and Grill (Chula Vista)

Thanks for bookmarking mmm-yoso!!! a food blog.  Kirk is checking off lists of things to do, Ed(from Yuma) is marking off his calendar of errands and Cathy is following a timetable on the computer, interspersing Continuing Education classes online with writing about food.

Here's a quick post about a meal at the Telegraph Canyon Chula Vista location of Pho Hiep Grill, which has been open since 2008.  The Linda Vista location and its food has been mentioned within or as the main of at least nine posts on this blog and there is a third, Eastlake Chula Vista location.  CC has been to both Pho Hiep and Grill's Chula Vista locations (and from her posts, it looks like she has tried almost the entire menu).

IMG_0730 This location has the same or maybe a bit less seating than the Linda Vista store, but the parking situation is much better.  This mall is anchored by a Vons store, but Pho Hiep and Grill is more East, closer to the McDonald's in the parking lot. IMG_0719 Seating was prompt and hot tea ($1 each) was brought out in individual cups and not a pot. A bit different than the other location.IMG_0727 The interior is newer and more modern.  Very neat and clean. IMG_0726 The Mister ordered the Bo Kho (beef stew) ($7.50).  The version here is very very good. The deceptively deep bowl was overfilled with beef, tendon and vegetables and the bread was warm, crispy and fluffy.  Very fresh and very good.  Seasoning was notable for slight (and not strong) anise.IMG_0722Continuing with my 'lemon beef salad' quest of the summer, I was slightly disappointed to see it was not offered here, however a lemon chicken salad (Goi Ga) ($7) was listed, so this was my order.  Again, prepared differently than all the other Vietnamese restaurants.  Large slices of white meat chicken cooked in a spiced lemon broth and served on crispy fresh sliced cabbage with a dressing of fried garlic, basil and topped with peanuts. This was served with shrimp chips, which just completed the flavor grouping.

Another great, interesting version. I'm glad I stumbled upon this new to me  menu item and decided to try it whenever I saw it (or a similar version) on a menu this year.

Have a great week!

Saigon Vietnamese Restaurant (revisit)(City Heights)

mmm-yoso!!!, a blog about food and sometimes interspersed with other stories.  This isn't anything about another story, it's just about food.  Kirk is taking a breather, Ed(from Yuma) is putting his feet up and Cathy is at the computer, settling back and sharing a meal while taking a Continuing Education class online.

This summer had some hot and humid days when eating out *any*where with air conditioning was the only criterion.  In August, while being seated at Pho Pasteur Anh Hong, I noted a salad on another table, asked our waiter what it was and ordered it: Lemon Beef.  I *really* liked that version and decided to try 'Lemon Beef Salad' at each Vietnamese Restaurant this summer.IMG_0114IMG_0092Saigon Restaurant has been located on El Cajon Boulevard, across from Hoover High School, for about ten years now.  Here is a link to Kirk's 2006 visit.  Here is a link to one of my visits.  That building on the next corner with the 1950's architecture overhanging what looks to be a parking lot is a drive through Dry Cleaners, one of few left in the city.

The interior of Saigon is simple and unchanged for all these years.  There are about 12 eight-person round tables as well as another 30 or so square four person tables; quite large inside.  There are also two televisions (which aren't always turned on) and a gigantic (five feet tall by eight feet long by three feet wide) fish tank filled with Koi.IMG_0096 Why I was here- the lemon beef salad (Bo Than Chanh) ($10.90).  You can see pieces of pale colored (i.e freshly cooked by lemon juice) thin sliced beef along with various sliced vegetables (carrot, cucumber, daikon radish, onion) and no lettuce.  The flavors were reminiscent of Kirk's Thai Beef Salad without any chilis or heat.  The beef reminded The Mister of unseasoned larb.  I tried various combinations of condiments from the tabletop tray, but it wasn't quite right, as far as heat goes- the beef seemed 'plain'.  Everything was fresh and 'sparkling' with flavor, but overall, it lacked something.   IMG_0103 Another reason I was here- the Nem Nuong ($5.50).  I still haven't posted about it, but after two trips to Brodard, I have been on a search for Summer rolls as fresh and good as are made there.  The Nem Nuong here are very good- the beef has flavor, the lettuce fresh and crispy but far too many rice noodles and not enough of other vegetables. On the plus side, these were tightly wrapped. IMG_0104

The Mister ordered beef stew (Bo Kho) ($9) and this tasted really great; nice spices within the 'gravy' and many soft tendon pieces.  It was fresh and satisfying.

Hope the week ahead is good for you!

Roadtrip: Pho Quang Trung 2 – Westminster (Orange County)

A few months back, I took a day off to meet some relatives who were visiting LA. I left quite early in the morning and hit Westminster at about 830 am. I decided to grab a bite to eat and it had been a while since I'd had pho in Little Saigon, so I decided to stop and get some. I checked out a couple of places and they were surprisingly busy, so I settled on Pho Quang Trang 2 which is in Asian Village Center right on Bolsa.

Pho Quang Trang 01

I hadn't been to this location of PQT, but I had been to the original location way back in the mid-2000's. From what I recall, they made a decent bowl of Pho Ga. I really wanted a obwl of Pho Filet Mignon, which is what I ordered. (small bowl – $6.45)

Pho Quang Trang 02

Pho Quang Trang 04One of the main reasons being that I think I've gotten kind of used to the typical bowl of pho in San Diego, low in beef flavor, low in clove-scorched onion–anise tones, and high in salt/msg. I just wanted to get some bearings with regards to pho. First off, there was a bit less herbs than I was used too, but what there was sparkling fresh. The noodles were in the typical clump, but nicely done, still having a good amount of stretch to them. The broth looked darker than I expected, but was quite mild in the sodium department, at least compared to what I'd been having the last couple of months. Overall, a light beefiness, a bit too light in the fat department, but better than just about every place in San Diego. Not sure where it ranks within Little Saigon, wince I haven't had too many bowls over the last few years.

The only thing that I didn't enjoy was that the filet was still a bit too frozen, still stiff and solid, taking too long to get to the correct doneness and cooling off the broth too quickly.

Pho Quang Trang 03

Pho Quang Trang 05Yes, I've had better….but god knows, I've had worse.

And the free little cup of che didn't hurt at all either.

The service, as to be expected was typical perfunctory Little Saigon, totally in character.

So what do you do on a hot and sticky day? Well, get a $10 cup of coffee, have some pho (at Pho Lucky), and end your night at Izakaya Sakura of course!

Panama Geisha V60The Missus has a style all Her own. She keeps me on my toes; I never know what Her latest obsession will be. Recently, She's become a bit of a coffee nerd, pour over coffee to be precise. One morning She sent me a text telling me She's ordered V60 "stuff"…..my response was "what do you need a missile launcher for?". I came to find out that She wasn't planning on taking out any tanks, but rather, was ordering the gear she needed to make pour over coffee at home. Of course, what's coffee without beans, right? Which is how we started visiting places like Dark Horse and Portola, with me having stuff like Kyoto Drip Coffee. Anyway, Her favorite current source of beans and a nice cup of coffee is Bird Rock and on this morning She was thrilled…..they had something called Panama Geisha, supposedly the best Panama has to offer. It was ten bucks for V50 pour-over, yikes! Still, I believe it was important for Her to try it….once….since She's really enjoying Her coffee. The guy working here was really nice and told the Missus, "it's perfect……I want to make sure you enjoy every last drop!" Which She did….It's really smooth and fruity….a bit too smooth for me…it is quite lovely, but I like a bit of acid and bite in coffee. I am glad She got a chance to try it. She also bought some Kenyan to grind (by hand) at home….She's started to keep the labels of the various beans She buys to remember what She enjoys. My goodness, I'm married to a coffee nerd in training.

Then it's off to Pho Lucky:

So it's like in the 80's at 8 in the morning. What does the Missus want to have? Well, pho of course…. wha???

Pho Lucky Sunday 01

Pho Lucky Sunday 02We actually ordered the same items as on this visit. Today the broth wasn't too salty and loaded with MSG, there was a nice clove-5 spice backbone to the broth. Lot's of tendon which the Missus gave to me…..along with all those perfectly cooked noodles….She stayed with the broth and meat. I'm still not a fan of the Missus dumping all those jalapenos into Her broth, but hey, it's Her soup, right?

I ordered the combination broken rice; most of which (except for the Bi, which the Missus inhaled) came home for a light lunch. I was too full after eating all those noodles.

Pho Lucky Sunday 03

Things were divided up as follows, pork chop and rice for me, shrimp stuffs for Her. She also had the "cha" which seemed like it had been sitting around for a while, it was too dry for my tastes, but the Missus enjoyed it. Such is how couples who have been together forever eat I guess…..

Gyokai Natto Don from Izakaya Sakura:

I was on my own for dinner. All this hot and sticky weather has me craving certain "comfort" food…..specifically natto. I hadn't been here in a while, and not for dinner in ages.

In fact, I hadn't been here since they cleaned up their menu….it's much more easy to read now…it made it so easy to find the Nankotsu Karaage – fried chicken cartilage. I love the crunch of well prepared chicken cartilage and this was fried perfectly.

Sakura Sunday

The coating was nice, light, and crisp, though I think I'll need some togarashi next time as it needed a bit of umph…..

Sakura Sunday 01

Sakura Sunday 02The combination of raw fish and ika (squid) combined with the sticky stringy natto was just what the doctor ordered. Soy sauce and wasabi just brought everything together for me. The agedashi tofu that comes with this wasn't cooked properly, the coating was gummy and didn't hold up…. otherwise, this was the perfect meal for today.

So. You see what we've been eating during this hot and sticky weather….what have you been eating?

Tu Thanh Revisited

As the weather cooled for a couple of days last week, I looked forward to having some noodles…..the hardest decision was, "what to get?" It was still a bit too warm for Bun Bo Hue from Mien Trung, on my last visit to Pho King I was accosted by some dude asking me for money twice, once before I went into the place and once leaving…..I also spotted him looking into the windows of my vehicle….man, what's going on here? And while Hu Tieu Nam Vang Kho from 777 sounded good, I wanted some soup. So I decided on heading back to Tu Thanh. I'd only visited once, back in December, and really enjoyed the Bun Mang Vit – Duck and Bamboo Shoot Soup. So it was time for another visit.

Tu Thanh Rev 01

The place really looks like a proper restaurant now; there were several tables filled when I arrived, a very nice sign. The young gentleman working here will surprise you; he looks caucasian, but speaks Vietnamese….he's also efficient as heck. I also found a couple of parking stalls right past the restaurant, which was nice….I hadn't even noticed those before!

Tu Thanh Rev 02

Tu Thanh Rev 03The broth was scalding hot, clean tasting, and fragrant, the bun perfectly prepared, and the bamboo shoots (you need to use dried bamboo shoots for a proper bowl) nicely stepped and rehydrated, adding a nice earthy scent to the broth, but still nice and crunchy.

The "goi vit", basically the duck and "salad", a combination of greens, herbs, and shredded banana blossom proves a nice counter-point. The duck, sliced, nicely flavored with a bit of chew.

And then of course there's the dipping sauce; savory nouc mam cham; sweet, the heady flavors of ginger, I'd say it's almost drinkable.

Tu Thanh Rev 04

Tu Thanh Rev 05I did hit the spot!

One of the more interesting things, at least for me, is that I like ot eat this a number of ways…dip the duck in the broth, add a touch for the dipping sauce. dip the salad into the broth, then the dipping sauce, just go for the duck in the dipping sauce, just the veggies in the broth, just the dipping sauce like a true salad, add a touch of the sauce to the broth about halfway thru……heck, just drink that sauce….

As I walked to my car, I wondered how Chinese Kitchen was doing without Chi Tu Thanh making the bun mang vit? I guess I'll need to check them out….someday.

Pho Pasteur Anh Hong (revisit)

mmm-yoso!!! A food blog based in San Diego.  These hot summer days have Kirk and Ed(from Yuma) out and about and busy with so many activities.  Cathy is writing because she isn't out.  Or about.  Or active.

I was reading Kirk's latest "Circling Back" post, with the last photo being Bo Tai Chanh (which was unimpressive to him, as it was to me) and thought I'd share a version I've enjoyed.

IMG_7006IMG_7004Yes, I've written a few  posts about Pho Pasteur, because it is a place where the Mister and I default to when we know we want a nice meal (or when we want to go to K Sandwiches and the line is sometimes  daunting.). Looking at the other posts, my photos are all from this table, Table 4, where we are always seated when we come here (I can tell you where the Table 4 is located at just about every Asian restaurant in the County, by the way). IMG_6992IMG_7003

We started this meal sharing Nem Nuong Cuon ($4.99), because I am now on a quest for San Diego's best version, after trying the Nem Nuong at Brodard (which I still have to post about). These were freshly made, tightly wrapped, the seasoned pork patties were very good.  Noodle, lettuce and fresh mint filled the rice paper skin.  I like this version.IMG_6994

The Mister ordered Bun Bo Xao ($7.99), which has been my usual order at Pho Lucky lately (again, I need to post on it).  Bun (cold rice noodle on top of salad) topped with lemongrass-onion flavor beef.  This version was a bit less 'delicate' than the one at Lucky, but quite enjoyable; the salad part (under the noodles) includes shredded cucumber as well as mint with the mixed lettuces.

IMG_6989

The menu at  Anh Hong has 196 numbered items, with a few subsets of said numbered items. We have tried almost half the menu here, always picking one which is 'new' to us.

This "Lemon Beef Salad"($10.99) was skipped over on the menu by me so many times, either because of the price or because I wasn't in a mood for salad. This marinated thinly sliced beef was **wonderful**. Barely cooked in citrus, so very tender and beefy flavored meat, a pleasant citrus based dressing (you will notice both versions (mine and Kirk's) are surrounded with lime slices, not lemon) and topped with peanuts, fresh herbs (and celery leaf)…and you can see underneath- no lettuce, but instead ribbons of cucumber, carrot, daikon, onion and…celery.  I don't know why, but that celery and cucumber just made it all come together and I really liked this salad.

I have now tried 'Lemon Beef' salad at quite a few other Vietnamese restaurants this summer, and the version here is my favorite, so far.

I hope your week is good!

Circling Back to Phuong Trang

Here's the latest in my "circling back" series, where I revisit places that many folks really love, but, well, I'm not quite as impressed.

I've always considered Phuong Trang to be very "middle of the road" Vietnamese Food….as in Pho not to offend. Toning down the flavors, creating a "safe" experience with regards to Vietnamese food in San Diego. There are those who disagree, which is fine, to each his or her own. I've had some decent meals at Phuong Trang and I believe they do a few items rather well…..though it really is a short list. So what I decided to do was to try items that folks have recommended to me. In some cases I also ordered items that I had enjoyed here in the past. I'm pretty sure you're tired of my posts on the pho here…no worries, I'm not going to keep beating that dead horse.

Phuong Trang Circling 01

It's probably a good time for a revisit to Phoung Trang as they recently unveiled an updated sign. The interior still looks the same.

Phuong Trang Circling 02

I decided to start off with probably the one dish that I think they do well here; the Butter Wings…..though the last time I ordered those wings, they were terrible, greasy, bitter burnt garlic,  just plain horribly made.

Phuong Trang Wing 01

This time it was back to what I was used too. Perhaps these were even better.

Phuong Trang Circling 03

Light, crisp, moist, nice MSG and all that…….

At least two folks had mentioned the Bo Luc Lac here, so I decided to order it.

Phuong Trang Circling 04

Phuong Trang Circling 05In some ways this was a typical PC – PT dish. The steak was nice and tender, I do like my Bo Luc Lac with watercress, but the sizzling plate makes a nice dramatic presentation. The flavors were really weak; lacking anything else than a rather salty flavor….no deep savory tones from fish sauce or even oyster sauce, no sweet tones, no black pepper…… The fried rice was decently prepared, though again the flavor was really muted.

Well, it was a one 'fer two….though picking those wings which I've had many times was kind pretty much a ringer.

The next time around, I just stuck with a single dish, Suon Ram Man. Basically spareribs marinated, then browned in a base of fish sauce and sugar, it is then braised in water, coconut water, or Coco Rico….which by the way, is a winna'. These however were not….

Phuong Trang Circling 06

The ribs were on the tougher side, but not inedible. Again the flavors here were less than satisfying. In spite of the looks, this was on the bland side…….gloppy, bland, chewy spareribs.

I was going to stop at this point, but decided on one more meal. It had been pretty hot so I wasn't going for any soup nor anything really heavy.

I started with some Cha Gio, egg rolls. These were usually pretty good as they use the appropriate rice paper. It's also good that, like the wings, they'll do half orders of these.

Phuong Trang Circling 07

Phuong Trang Circling 08I think there was a bit of glitch with oil temperature today as the egg rolls were on the hard and chewy side, lacking any crispness, making eating this rather unpleasant. Man, these were disappointing since they are usually pretty good.

Looking for something refreshing, I decided on the marinated beef salad called Bo Tai Chanh.

Phuong Trang Circling 09

Phuong Trang Circling 10Where to start with this one? First off, this was a huge salad….it was also really bland, really needing more herbs, and the "dressing" was really watered down. The beef, "cooked" in citrus was actually pretty good, and there was a lot of it. Overall, this really needed a flavor boost, it didn't help that the tomatoes were under-ripe and had no flavor as well.

Well, this one was an "O" 'fer two……

Right before this meal, I sent a text to "YY" telling her that I was going to Phuong Trang one more time, just to do my due diligence….she told me I was nuts. Why would I punish myself like this?

In the end, I did change my opinion of Phuong Trang a bit. Instead of thinking of the food here as being dumbed down; perhaps I should look at the place as being the "gateway Vietnamese Restaurant". One that will lead the more adventurous eater to a wonderful cuisine. Yeah, maybe that's the ticket…..

Roadtrip: Ha Noi Avenue – Westminster

**** Ha Noi Avenue has closed

Last weekend, the Missus really wanted to drop by Portola Coffee Labs…..She has become a real coffee nerd. She's got all the gear to make pour-over coffee…..

Anyway, on the way down to the OC we started getting hungry. This gave us the perfect chance to check out a place I'd been wanting to try for a while; Ha Noi Avenue.

Hanoi Avenue 01

We really don't get to this end of Westminster Boulevard very often and I was hankering for some Bun Cha.

As with many businesses, this was obviously some kind of fast food joint….you could still see the drive thru lane and speaker board outside. The restaurant isn't very large, but is quite clean. Most of the customers were in rather large groups…families. And all were eating just about the same thing; Bun Cha, Cha Ca Thang Long, and Banh Tom, all the trappings of Northern Vietnamese Food.

Hanoi Avenue 03

I read of some instances where service was lacking, but we didn't experience any of that….in fact, the guy serving us was kind of, well jovial in a way. When we placed our order, he smiled gave us the "thumbs up" and said, "good….good!" Apparently he approved.

Hanoi Avenue 04

Hanoi Avenue 05Fairly soon our table was loaded up; three plates of bun, two large baskets of herbs and greens, the pickled papaya and carrots in fish sauce, mam tom, nuoc mam cham, Banh Trang Me…..

Just the fragrance of the bun cha took us back to Bun Cha Dak Kim in Hanoi. While it was not nearly as good…..it was good enough. All the base flavors were there; the ground pork patty was a bit on the large size and not quite as tender, but the flavors, salty-sweet-savory-porky were just what the doctor ordered.

On another note, the bun here was perfectly prepared….just the right texture for me; not overly sticky or mushy.

When I saw Nem Cua Bể (crab spring rolls) on the menu, I had ot have it.

Hanoi Avenue 06

While not nearly as flavorful as #1 Hang Manh, lacking in the amount of savory flavors (crab) and not as light as I prefer, this was still not bad. Crisp, molten, and lovely with lettuce and a dunk in the nuoc mam cham.

The only real clunker was the Cha Ca Thang Long.

Hanoi Avenue 07

Hanoi Avenue 08The fish, while moist was very bland. We've gotten used to all the flavors from Song Long's version of Cha Ca, amking this seem puny and missing some parts we enjoy like the fried shallots and peanuts. The mam nem was really watered down and weak. We'll pass on this next time and go for the Banh Tom instead.

Hanoi Avenue 09And yes; there will be a next time. Funny thing, even though the signs say "pho" not one single customer (all Vietnamese) was having it.

Ha Noi Avenue

Hours:
Wed – Mon 830am – 830pm

It's kind of nice to have all these options if we want a breakfast/lunch, we can go with the Cha Ca Thang Long at Song Long which opens at 9, or some Hue favorites at Ngu Binh which also opens at 9, or if we're in the mood for Banh Cuon we can go to Pho Tau Bay which opens at 8……

In the end, the missus got Her coffee beans at Portola, I got a cup of Kyoto Drip cold brew. And we got a nice little trip down memory lane. To a place crowded wall to wall with people, steep and skinny stairs leading up to an almost communal dining area, at #1 Hang Manh…….

It was wonderful taking that trip in my mind, down the dusty streets, dodging motorbikes, and eating like crazy in edgy Hanoi…..

I think it might almost be time for another trip…..

Bun Mam Monday – Com Tam Nhu Y

As the clouds and humidity swirled on into San Diego….with the weather turning slightly monsoon-like, with rain falling in August, my thoughts suddenly turned to Bun Mam. I'm not sure why, but that funky, fermented-fish based umami bomb broth called to me. So I decided to check out Com Tam Nhu Y, which, if you're keeping score, used to be Nhu Y, then, having been sold, became Com Tam Thuan Kieu, not to be confused with Com Tam Thuan Kieu for a blink of the eye….only to become Com Tam Nhu Y, not to be mistaken for Pho Nhu Y in Clairemont, opened by the former owner of Nhu Y. Really….can you say soap opera in the making? Who needs "Real Housewives of xxxxx", when you can have "Noodleshop Stories of San Diego"?

Nhu Y Bun Mam 01

Well, whatever…..I was here for the soup……

Nhu Y Bun Mam 02

Nhu Y Bun Mam 03The last itme I visited, I thought the broth had taken a turn to a lighter and an almost sweeter soup. Well…..it was back to the good 'ol Nhu Y broth on this visit. Dark and funky, it was raised by the squeeze of lime and the melange of herbs to cut the thickness of the broth. It was also a bit more spicy…….like a broth that had been steeping for a while. This is one of the few soups that can overcome the rather muddy flavor of low grade catfish……you take in the smooth and buttery texture of the fish.

Nhu Y Bun Mam 04

The stuffed jalapeno really didn't do much for me and the shrimp were slightly over-cooked, but I knew what makes this dish tick….that really rich and funky broth. This was actually pretty close to what I had recently at Nhu Y Clairemont and I didn't have to wait until after 3pm to order it. Though that Hispanic couple who came in and sat behind me, then moved after my soup arrived may want that 3pm rule Nhu Y Bun Mam 05implemented here….hey, this ain't your neighborhood or restaurant, sometimes you might want to experience real life….. and real food….
