Saturday Stuffs: Gifts from a fellow blogger, we needed a new cleaver, almost impulse buys from Thuan Phat, and recently consumed……

Gifts from a fellow food blogger:

During our lunch at Moby Dick (insert punch line), fellow food blogger Canine Cologne, "CC" to me, generously gave us a goody bag of swag……

07102012 027

07102012 028I gotta say….this was some really yummy stuff. The Missus really loved the smoked mussels and the tuna!

Thanks as always for your generosity CC, it's always a pleasure seeing you!

We said we needed a new cleaver……

Actually, the Missus mentioned this to my MIL. So when the D's visited, guess what we got? Well, not one…but three cleavers from China! Thanks to MrD Sr.

One daily use, lighter weight…a medium weight, and one that's super heavy and perfect for chopping up bones among other things. We really appreciate the gifts!

08222012 013

08222012 014The brand is Wang Ma Zi which is one of those "time honored brands". Really good knives, the Missus loves the everyday cleaver, which I got good and sharp.

Someone asked me how I keep my knives sharp….so sharp that PeterL was kind of afraid to use them. A sharp knife cuts cleanly and is safer to use than a dull one that slips around. I have a Smith Abrasives Tri Hone that I really like along with a steel and a whetstone I've had for decades.

Recently seen at Thuan Phat:

The Missus has taken to shopping at Thuan Phat…..well, at least every once in a while. She likes the08252012 020variety; the place is much less "pungent" then Vien Dong was, and we do find items that catch our interest once in a while, helping to make the sometimes mundane task of shopping a bit more fun. I recently used up the last of the palm sugar we brought back from Cambodia, so I needed to restock. It had been so long since I last shopped for the stuff that I was surprised to find jars with tablespoon sized disks of palm sugar available. For those that have wrestled with the large blocks/discs of hard as rock palm sugar, this stuff is great. A drop of water and 10-15 seconds in the microwave and it becomes very soft.

There were a couple of items that caught my eye during shopping. Even though I have no use for it, this was almost irresistible.

08252012 017

First, I wondered if it really smelled like durian…..of course I'm not going to be dumb enough to open it in the store! Can you imagine….or worse, what if I spilled it? Gives new meaning to "clean-up in aisle five". Still, if your coffee smells kind of odd next time…..

Recently Consumed:

08252012 026I saw some nice watercress at the Linda Vista Farmer's Market and thought it had been a while since I made Luang Prabang Salad (Nyam Salat). That's basically why I needed the palm sugar.

Even though I hadn't made it in a while, it turned out well….the Missus got a kick out of the presentation. It's kind of an inside joke with us.

08252012 021

We' ve found that taking sometime to make your meal look a little more….well, pretty enhances the meal…even Sun Brand Cold Noodles……

08222012 011

The lemongrass chicken at Yum Cha Cafe is $3.99 for a half chicken and it's probably the best BBQ item they have. It does tend to dry out, so buy it intact and cut it up at home.

08252012 001

Funny thing is…the Missus is starting to text me photos of Her breakfasts when I'm at work……

Oahu: Odds and Ends……

It's kind of funny……in 2010, I hadn't been "home" in nearly a decade, then during the course of less than 2 years or so, I travel back 3 times! This one really wasn't planned way in advance. A few months back, we got word that Mr.D and his family would be visiting with the In-laws. After taking us around Beijing , it only seemed right that we return the favor. Sadly, the Missus couldn't make it, so I flew to Oahu solo and spent a couple of days helping the in-laws out. I really enjoyed my time with Mr.D and family and will get more into that in future posts. For some reason, I'm kinda bushed…even more tired than I felt after returning from our recent Istanbul-Tunisia-Rhodes-Istanbul trip. So give me another day to regroup. In the mean time I thought I'd do a short post on some "stuffs"…..

Let me just start off with a requisite photo…….

IMG_0392

Here's some of the grinds I had during this trip……

IMG_0398

Plate lunches and bentos of course…….

IMG_0412

And of course, some of the other standards as well……

07302012 141

You know I'd have to have one of these, right?

07302012 120

I did manage to make the best of the time I had to myself and ended up having a pretty darn good meal.

Mitchs 03

Nokia Photos 041

I did find more then a few things that I really didn't want to eat…….like a "loco moco burger". I could probably do the gravy, bread, and protein thing. But for some reason, the thought of having a "mound" of rice between two buns just felt….well, wrong for some reason.

As for 7/11 having the best Spam Musubi…… all I can say is "really"?

07302012 110

Nokia Photos 052It's a sad day when okazuya's and mom-and-pop stores can't make a better Spam Musubi than 7-11…really?

Then of course, there was that sign to my right. Oxtail soup with fat-free broth? I think this one ends up on my "why bother" list. Though….it might be good…..

While on my way to baggage claim in the airport, the July issue of Honolulu Magazine caught my eye. Mainly because of this article.

07312012 019

I'm pretty sure you really had to live it to understand the phenomenon of this show. During it's run, it was such a huge hit on the local Japanese language station, KIKU, that it basically wiped the floor with shows on all the other stations….we're talking stuff like Mission Impossible! Just thinking of the show has me humming the theme song……

Yikes, I'm regressing……I better get some rest!

Tunis: Restaurant Le Caire, what is Zgougou and does it belong in ice cream, and morning in Tunis.

It was quite a scene, Avenue Habib Bourgiba……the Missus was taking a rest, as I wandered back out to pick up some "eau de mineral….no gas", that would be bottled water. On the map, there are streets perpendicular to Habib Bourgiba, but many of them are almost alleyways. Right around the corner from the Hotel Carlton was one of them Rue de Caire. On these sidestreets there are tons of restaurants and one of them is Restaurant le Caire. Not in the mood for more busy places, this tiny restaurant close to the hotel, not too busy, away from the crowd on the street, was where we decided to grab something to eat.

06072012 231

The restaurant had a couple of tables filled, it seems by locals or Tunisian tourists…..not much French being spoken, they were ordering in Arabic. Looking at the menu, this appeared to be Sfaxian as well. The guy running the place was really friendly and as soon we sat he brought out a tray with "today's catch".

06072012 225

We placed our order based on what we saw…..funny thing was, later during our meal, the plate was brought out to the table next to us and it looked like exactly the same seafood, in exactly the same position on the plate was brought out. I'm guessing these were the "stunt" fish….used for ordering purposes.

Soon enough the bread and Harissa was brought out.

06072012 221

This was a bit better than lunch, with a mild garlic taste, but still rather monotone in taste.

The Missus had also ordered a salad, I thought it was mechouia, but She had ordered Salade Tunisienne….which kind of freaked Her out when it arrived with what looked like canned tuna topping it.

06072012 222

The Missus hate canned tuna. In fact, there's only one brand I eat, She must dramatically leave the room! So I knew this was going to be interesting….well, there's not only one brand of tuna I eat, I do enjoy many of the Spanish, Italian, and French labels of canned tuna, but sheesh, they cost an arm and a leg. I knew this was mediterranean tuna, so I told the Missus, "I think it's worth a try." Not the best, but the Missus thought it not bad. She did enjoy the ripe tomatoes, diced cucumbers, olives, with just some olive oil and lemon.

I also wanted to finally try some brik, basically a very thin pastry called warka, thinner than even filo, filled with a raw egg and a variation of other items, tuna, onions, harissa, capers, etc…..

06072012 227

Some places will even ask you how you want your egg done………

It's deep fried to a golden crispness, when done well it's wonderfully crisp and light, and the magic happens when you cut it open.

06072012 228

The Missus didn't care much for the tuna in this and though I enjoyed it at the time, it would pale in comparison to versions we would have later on.

My grilled fish tasted fresh, was grilled nicely, the skin nice and crisp, flesh moist, but again was lacking in salt.

06072012 233

06072012 234It was better than what we had for lunch though. The frites were the typical soggy and dry version we had earlier. I was also served a plate of very bland and over-cooked rice. Now I'm from Hawaii where we joke that every meal should come with "three carbs"….well considering the big basket of bread, the fries, and the big plate of rice……..what can I say?

The Missus again ordered crevettes grille – grilled shrimp.

06072012 236

06072012 237These shrimp were nice and sweet, just a tad overcooked, but not bad. The only complaint…..yeah, you got it, lacking in seasoning! Of course it came with frites as well as a huge plate of overcooked, bleh pasta. We were to find out later that folks really cooked their pasta to death because it was thought to help "digestion"!

As we left the restaurant, darkness had fallen on Tunis. The demographic on the street had changed….the young men were still drinking coffee, now joined by older men, but the women who were seen out and about shopping or eating ice cream were gone.

06072012 238

06072012 239The Missus decided that She wanted to try some ice cream, which along with various pastries seemed to be very popular. Right next to the hotel was a little shop wher the Missus got a two scoops and we sat in the now empty table across from the shop. The top scoop was a delicious pistachio flavor. The bottom scoop tasted very odd, not necessarily sweet, but strangely familiar. Turns out the Missus had selected zgouguo as Her other flavor. Zgougou is a Tunisian dessert based on nuts from the aleppo pine.

Tunisia is a Muslim country. All the women and young women we had seen with respect to what folks wear here in San Diego dress rather modestly, from those who are covered from head to tow completely in black, with even eyes covered, to those in jeans and blouses. So we were rather shocked to see two women get out of a cab in very mini-mini skirts and walk to a blackened out and partitioned doorway next to the hotel. I could only draw one conclusion…….which the Missus didn't believe. Hmm…….

The next morning we got up bright and early. Breakfast wasn't ready yet so the Missus and I decided to take a look around. As we entered the lobby of the hotel I could hear a woman yelling at someone….now this was at 5 in the morning! The guy in the lobby saw us, sheepishly smiled and told us in English, "no worry, some friends make joke with each other!" As we stepped out of the hotel we saw one of the women from the night before, now dressed with a nice shiner around her eye in addition to her mini-skirt. Must have been one heck of a joke. I looked at the Missus and told Her, "really now….you don't believe me?" And was dismissed with a wave.

06072012 242

06072012 241

This is Rue de Caire in the morning. I walked up and took a photo of the restaurant. We'd find a multi-floor shopping mall near the end of the street with a Monoprix Supermarket in it later in the day. Great place to pick up water and other items.

The streets were empty and it made for a nice walk.

06072012 249

Here's another photo of the Cathedral of St Vincent de Paul.

06072012 250

This is Bab el Bahr also known as Porte de France.

06072012 251

Bab el Bahr means "sea gate" and before the French arrived this gate opened from the Medina to a path to a lagoon. The French built the European part of the city outside of it and destroyed the walls of the medina. They called this the Porte de France a dividing point between the Old and European sides of the city.

It was nice to able to walk around crossing the street without having your head on a swivel.

Midweek Meanderings: Just Open or Opening Soon – Red Moon Noodle House, Sushi Bar Kazumi is back, Kogi BBQ, Ramen Yamadaya

Man, I go on vacation for a month and the entire Clairemont food scene changes…..just kidding! Here are a couple of recently opened or soon to open places in the Clairemont/Convoy/Kearney Mesa area.

Red Moon Noodle House:

06272012 010Man, I didn't even hear about this one! One of my favorite FOYs (Friend of Yoso), "Yummy Yummy" told me about this shop. It's in the former location of Morning Glory, next to Tofu House and Yogurt World. Hours seem kind of funny, they skip lunch and open at 3pm….maybe that's only during the grand opening period? Anyone checked this place out yet?

4646 Convoy St.
San Diego, CA 92111

Remember Sushi Bar Kazumi in Hillcrest?:

I'd heard rumors that Kazumi was looking for a new spot around Convoy after closing his shop which was a fixture in Hillcrest. Did you know that the original Kazumi was on Engineer Road where Sushi Yaro is currently? Anyway, I was a bit surprised to see that he reopened located in, ahem Moby Dick Fish Market and Grill, which I mentioned here.

06272012 011

I've heard that pretty good things about the food being served here and I used to go to Kazumi in  Hillcrest when I was doing consulting work here in the late 90's……so I guess I need to check them out soon. Being that the place is owned by the guy who used to own Convoy Sushi and Fish Market
and North Park Sushi and Fish Market, I'm pretty sure the prices will be fairly reasonable.

4805 Convoy St
San Diego, CA 9211

Is it really Kogi BBQ?:

Or does the owner have to look out for a lawsuit from Roy Choi? This one was mentioned to me by MrZ.

06272012 012

This is the former Suzuya location next to Mama Jamaica's and Oton. I guess since it's a Korean BBQ, the change over was pretty quick.

5447 Kearny Villa Rd
San Diego, CA 92123

Actually, I was alerted to another opening by MrsZ, but didn't have time to take photos. Apple Korean Restaurant has opened next to Chopstix on Convoy. Sorry MrsZ, i promise you equal time and billing next time!

Ramen Yamadaya opening on 07/25:

As mentioned by Dennis in his post. By the way, happy four year Bloggversary Dennis! I saw the sign when I dropped by Best Donuts for a sandwich.

06272012 019

I was actually surprised that Big Fish Grill lasted so long. I heard from a very reliable source that the folks took out all the fixtures and equipment in the middle of the night and just bailed on the place…….wow…. I was also told that this happens more often that folks would think.

On the good side….I can't wait to get me some good tonkotsu ramen with an extra dose of garlic from Yamadaya!

4706 Clairemont Mesa Blvd
San Diego, CA 92117

There is another "new" place very close by…..I just haven't had the time to check them out. My friend who is an active participant on Chinese message boards say the results have not been positive.

Anyone been????

Where the heck we are…..home stretch edition

I hope you've enjoyed this series of posts. We're headed into the home stretch of our vacation, so this will be the last for a while.

From Tunisia, after a day layover, we headed to our next stop. The main attraction, other than the beaches is a fairly large walled city. The town itself really stirs the imagination. The terms Knights, Grand Master, and the location of one of the ancient wonders of the world really grabs the attention of a person who read about the Crusades and knights as a young boy.

To give things perspective. We're staying in a converted house that is over 700 years old!

While most of the folks I know talk in years, here they talk in centuries..

Of course we had to eat……

We also visited a village with an ancient acropolis towering over it. Very impressive..again it stirs the imagination. There was also some alternate transportation available for those interested….we actually felt sorry for the poor animals…..

We also visited a village with one of the most beautiful harbors I've ever seen……

This dish was a nice surprise for us.

We spent a night in a nearby village. The hotel seemed like a converted geriatric hospital. But I gotta say the view from our table during dinner was priceless.

So that's it for now. Next time you hear from me, I'll hopefully be home. Let me know if you enjoyed these posts and maybe I'll try to do them the next time we take a trip.

As always….Thanks for reading!

Where the heck we’ve been. But where are we headed next?

FOY Michaela got it right. We're in Tunisia, though by the time you read this we've hopefully moved on to our next destination. Following a two day stop in Tunis, we did a quick six day road trip through much of the country. From Roman ruins, through the Fourth most holiest city in Islam….

To desert oasis….

Spending a night in the part of the Sahara called the Grand Erg Oriental then finally the Island of Djerba.

We're now relaxing, well, relaxing as much as is possible with the Missus in the laid back town of Sidi Bou Said. I really didn't know what to expect when we left on this trip and I have to say that the food here has taken me on a sometimes strange ride.

Yet, it's all been interesting and we've had a couple of great meals the last few nights.

Our favorite little town in Tunisia is La Marsa. The folks we've run into there have been some of the friendliest and kindest.

I can only hope that the rest of our trip will be the same.

Thanks for reading!

Where the heck are we? Part 4.

Have you figured out where we are by now? We have a couple of more days here, than are moving on. This country is pretty amazing. You can go from this……

To the ocean in a matter of a couple of hours by car. One moment you're on a camel (we didn't eat this one).

The next you're looking at something like this.

Here's one for movie buffs……

The architecture of where we're at right now is very mediterranean, not quite what I expected.

And though I can't wrap my head around this countries strange and unlikely obsession with this dish.

We have found some interesting and pretty delicious stuff to eat.

Here's one more shot of the desert…..

I gotta get going. I think I see dinner passing me by.

Where the heck are we? Part 3.

Figured out where we're at yet? Here are a few more clues. We've moved on a bit since my last post. Here are some of my latest.

There are some wonderful Roman ruins, but what really surprised us was that there was no one visiting them except us!

Wonderful mosaics as well…..

As for the the food. Some of it was underwhelming, but there were places like this…..

Notice what's hanging in front of the restaurant.

Good stuff all around!

And then there was this:

Doesn't look like much, right? Well, it's not this:

But more like this……

I hope everyone is having a great week!

I know we are…….

The 2011 San Diego County Fair-Part 3: Sensible Fair Food

Yes, this is mmm-yoso!!! the blog about food which is usually written by one of three people (and occasionally by some other friends).  Kirk is out somewhere in the world enjoying a vacation, ed (from Yuma) is also out enjoying this three day weekend and Cathy is catching up-on a post she thought about writing last July.

Hi.  The title of this post is *not* a typo.  There are two posts written about the 2011 San Diego County Fair and a third post to tie up loose ends was intended to be written…and, well, it never seemed to be the right time. This long weekend, when people are home celebrating Memorial Day and maybe thinking about  the 2012 San Diego County Fair seems to be the right time to post. I wrote this because people asked me what I really eat when I go to the Fair.

Now, I have shown the decadent offerings at the Fair… IMG_0839

IMG_0739

IMG_1284

The truth is, The Mister and I try maybe one of the newer, decadent offerings, but don't make a day of eating all that stuff. For one, it would be expensive and second, I just don't deliberately stuff myself at any meal.

There are smarter choices offered and you can still eat different foods than your usual snacks while enjoying the exhibits on the Fairgrounds. The exhibits and contests are the "heart" of the Fair- why the Fair exists.IMG_1266

IMG_1300

Albertsons, one of the Sponsors of the Fair, has had this booth for several years now: IMG_0799

The Albertson's Rejuvenation Station sells a variety of salads, fruits, nuts and more or less 'healthy' beverages.

There are also many booths with grilled food available- IMG_1186

…sometimes next to or within booths offering fried choices…You have to read the smaller print on some of the booths-or just look around:

IMG_1287

IMG_1291

IMG_1138

IMG_1139

There are at least ten vendors selling grilled turkey legs at the Fair, and at least another ten selling grilled corn.

Now, what do The Mister and I eat when we go to the County Fair? Well, we do try at least one of the "new" offerings each year, but when it is time for a meal,IMG_1274

The falafel burger and/or the artichoke sandwich from Roxy's is one purchase we make.  It's great. Very large, on a wheat bun, topped with fresh, crisp vegetables and…I am not sure what makes it different, but it is. I've never been disappointed with either sandwich.

Also every year, we *must* stop here.IMG_1162

IMG_1161

I can't make or buy a fresh cream puff like this- the shells are baked daily in the trailer.  When you order, then the shells are filled with fresh whipped cream.  Heaven.

One last view of the 2011 Fair- the view from the West.IMG_1321

The 2012 San Diego County Fair has had some exhibits judged and it's being set up…that's another post.  It opens June 8. This is a link to the new foods that will be available at the 2012 San Diego County Fair.

  IMG_5950

I hope everyone is enjoying this weekend and the reason we celebrate Memorial Day. Thank you to those who Serve and Served.
