My good FOY (Friend of Yoso) told me that signage was up in the former location of Huynh Hoa Tuu and O' Yea. It seems that either the folks at Hoai Hue Deli are relocating, or opening up a second shop. If they are moving, I won't have to keep folks on the look-out for the shop below Hung's Tattoo Parlor and Alcoholics Anonymous anymore.

08292010 018 I recently needed some Chinkiang vinegar, and not finding my favorite brands, I went for what I thought was Gold Plum Brand, which is always dependable. Seeing the price at 99 cents, I thought it was a bargain. I grabbed it in a rush, and it wasn't until I got home when I found it was not Gold Plum Brand, but another with a similar yellow bottle. It's the one on the right in the photo, Gold Plum is on the left. The brand on the right is not very good…….. 

When I returned to 99 Ranch Market, I noticed that the two brands are stocked right next to each other.

And finally………

I recently dropped by my neighborhood sandwich shop. One of the owners, Peter told me he wanted to make me something "special" just for me……. how could I resist! So guess what he made?

Whew…. talk about some major calories….. so maybe we should start at the beginning. At the end of last year, I was having my usual, at my… usual. That would be an 8" Mushroom Cheesesteak at Gaglione Bros in Point Loma.

Whom I believe belongs to one of the managers or owners of the place. Can you imagine, being a carnivore, and having to endure the glorious smell of animal flesh charring??? It must be pure torture, so I hope he/she gets some nice "samples" once in a while. The lab looked down at me, and with a tilt of the head seemed to tell me "you think you like this so much, why don't you do a post comparing cheesesteaks?" Now before you think that I'm headed toward wrapping "mi cabeza" in aluminum foil to prevent Aliens from outer space…. or other food bloggers from reading my thoughts, and am headed with a "ho ho hee hee ha ha to the funny farm." (Though I heard life there is beautiful all the time) Perhaps the lab didn't speak to me, maybe the idea just popped into my head…. but I thought it was a pretty good idea.

Thinking this over a bit, I decided to try to order my usual, and let's be clear, this ain't a "Philly Cheesesteak" comparison… it's basically a Mushroom Steak comparison. It's not that I haven't had the "real thing" though. Over a decade ago, the major vendor of the company I was with was headquartered in Philly. I managed to attend conferences there twice. I had made a few friends, and one of them took me down to the intersection of 9th Street and Passyunk, home of the cheesesteak icons, Pat's who claims to have invented the Philly Cheesesteak in 1933, and Geno's. My favorite cheesesteak of the trip was not from either iconic shop, but from a shop in the Reading Terminal Market called Rick's Original Philly Steaks. Unfortunately, Rick's Steaks' lease was not renewed, which caused quite a flap, and Rick left the market, but has opened elsewhere. By the way, "Rick" is the Grandson of "Pat" Pasquale Olivieri. It is the grandson of Harry Pasquale, Pat's brother who owns Pat's. And then there was the lawsuit… man, the stories themselves are more juicy than the steaks at either Pat's or Geno's. Let's not go into the Cheesesteak I had in another place in Downtown Philly, yuck. Oh, and I actually enjoyed the Roast Pork sandwich from DiNic's more than any of the cheesesteaks…. go figure.

Next question would probably be, "where's the Whiz?" Strangely enough, the faux cheese "whiz" was not invented until 1953. Before that, it was probably American cheeseor provolone. And personally, I'm not a big fan of Whiz…. and prefer the mild milkiness and texture of melted provolone. So onward to the cheesesteaks…..

The Best Cheesesteak I had: Olde City Grill

The first thing that struck me about Olde City was how the place looked really sports bar-ish, or just plain Pacific Beach bar-ish.

For some reason I didn't find this very promising with regards to a cheesesteak. But, knowing Captain Jack, whose large heart is only exceeded by his appetite, this place had to be good. You can build your own steak, but I chose the 6" "Aristocrat ($6.99). It's a mushroom steak with sharp provolone and onions…. and oh, the beef is supposed to be "American" Kobe, which is, I suppose Wagyu? Anyway on to the steak:

The roll was a true Amoroso, which has truly become a "marketing" thing. You see, Amoroso now sells their bread through such "boutique" purveyors as SYSCO and US Foods…. so much like how a somewhat unscrupulous Itamae can charge a Gaijin a super high price for sushi telling them the fish "came from Japan" (I've seen this done….in fact twice from a specific Itamae) when indeed that most "farm raised" Hamachi and other fish comes from Japan, it's exactly what all the other upper-mid, and high end sushi bars are selling. Back to the cheesesteak… at first I was a bit hesitant about all the "brown bits" on the sandwich, but I gotta say, it was delicious. The beef actually melted in, or was it just plain melted my mouth. I also didn't notice any cheese at first, until I bit into the sandwich and almost melted my tongue off. I do think that a bit more cheese wouldn't hurt this sandwich, and the roll could be a tad better toasted/heated, but you can't beat the earthy flavors of mushrooms, the beef, and onions that have been grilled to the "sweet zone". Captain Jack mentioned that perhaps the sandwich was not quite as messy as a true Philly, but this oozed onto my hands, causing the loss of several layers of derma….. This 6" was enough for me……

The King is Dead: Alex's Brown Bag

We've been ordering from what many of the "old guard" believe is the best Cheesesteak in San Diego, Alex's Brown Bag for years. We've cut down on our orders over the years, because even though they deliver, we've noticed some deterioration in portion size, and I've gotten more than a few dry steaks over the last two years. In fact, I've started ordering the Pizzaiola – a cheesesteak sandwich with pepperoni, but more importantly, marinara sauce (which we get on the side) which helps moisten everything. Heresy perhaps, but a guy's gotta do, what a guy's gotta do to avoid a dry cheesesteak. I did tell myself that the cheesesteak lost something (that would be moisture) in transport, and I had to eat at the shop to actually see, which is what I did.

Finding the brick and mortar Alex's can be a bit confusing……it is located in the well known Mr. A building on Banker's Hill.

Here I went with the "Philadelphia Cheesesteak"($7.75), which automatically comes with mushrooms, onions, bell peppers, and mozzarella. I'm sure you can get it with Whiz if you really wanted it.

The best part of the sandwich was that the Amoroso Roll was perfectly toasted, not too hard, not too soft. It could also be that the juices didn't saturate the bread because, well, frankly, it was pretty darn dry. The cheese was too mild for the sandwich, though it added a nice gooey stringy texture to everything.

It's sad to see King's lose their luster, though the sandwich still had a well flavored beefy "soul", for me this was like seeing a mid-seventies Elvis, fat, drug addicted, over-gorged on Peanut Butter-Banana-Bacon sandwiches trying to strut his stuff. It's hard to settle for less from the "King".

Long live the King: Pop's Jersey Style Steaks

I've often spoken to folks about the difference between the "best", and our "favorite". We have our favorites because of a combination of factors, and on the visits I did over the course of eight months, my visit to Pop's was my favorite.

And it's all because of family…. you see, on the day I visited "Junior" was running the counter, and seemed to know every customer. His brother(Tony) and "Pop" were manning the flat-top, "Mom" was in the back. I ordered my steak with mushrooms, and had a seat. Junior brought the food out to me, and asked me how I heard about Pop's… and of course, it was through another of Captain Jack's posts. Let me tell you CJ, if you still read this blog…. you're a celebrity here. Once I told him I knew you, Junior insisted on bring out Pop to talk to me. Which is how I found out that this family, the Guadagni's used to own Alex's Brown Bag!

There are fliers tacked up around the restaurant telling us they now use Amoroso's. I like the crust, but the bread portion was toasted a bit too hard for me. Pop had told me that he doesn't do gooey and messy steaks anymore because this is "California, and we should be healthy, and why not have the steak evolve…. like the burrito!" He produced old photos from his time at Alex's…. can you tell that I just loved this guy?

The beef here is the most highly seasoned, great pepper flavor. Pop's was worried because some folks think the steak is a bit too highly seasoned, and Pop's gets his beef shipped in from New Jersey.

Which leads me to a photo on CJ's post. I was wondering about the beef that Pop brings in, and CJ happens to have a photo of the box…… I had to laugh. Among the ingredients is Autolyzed Yeast and Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein….. great umami, which of course, we call something else. I'll still keep coming back because the beef does taste really good…. and of course there's the family!

There are a few changes since my original post in 2005.

I still usually get the  8" mushroom cheesesteak($6.95) with provolone. It's not out of this world, but satisfies my cravings. Prices have gone up a bit, but my capability to eat has gone down with regards to quantity.

It seems to me that the bread is not an Amoroso, but a reasonable facsimile. I could be wrong, but it doesn't have as much "bread" as a typical Amoroso. It is essentially moist, gooey, and beefy for me. The provolone cheese is always totally melted, and gives a faint milkiness to the entire sandwich.

And yet, feet to the fire…. it could be that the real reason I eat at Gaglione Brothers are the garlic fries….. I've never eaten here without ordering garlic fries.

A worthy contender: Giorgino's

I had been waiting to check out Giorgino's for a while. After all they claim to make the "Best Cheesesteak in Town".

On my visit, I ordered the Mush Steak ($6.90), which came with White American Cheese, mushrooms, and onions.

To me, perhaps the best bang-for-the-buck. They use Amoroso rolls. But what really made this sandwich stand out was the pronounced garlic flavor, which I enjoyed. when the young man asked me how I liked my sandwich, I mentioned the wonderful flavor of garlic, and asked him if they use "garlic powder" which seemed to irritate him, and he replied snippily, "no… we use only fresh ingredients, it's fresh garlic." Ooops…. though it did make me wonder, if they use only fresh ingredients, it sure seemed like canned mushrooms…. but perhaps they were "fresh" canned mushrooms?

For me, the one "best" that Giorgino's has is the relaxing seating outdoors during a nice day in South Park.

Like I mentioned in this post, the reason I would return to The Philly Grill are not the Cheesesteaks, but Suzanne, and the Italian Sandwiches, which she douses with a mildly bracing balsamic dressing.

The Cheesesteaks here just don't do it for me.

 PhillyGrillr04The beef is decent quality, and pretty freshly cut, but there's not enough of it. The bread on my visits was from Gibaldi's and there was too much of it, too doughy, and the crust was not up to the task. The one saving grace was the addition of pickled peppers, much like Giardiniera with added some flavor to the proceedings.

I like the location on 30th street of this place. My good FOY (Friend of Yoso) Howie told me that even though he prefers Giogino's, Eddie's has slowly gotten better over time.

This converted house has a porch, and different rooms where you can have your meal. The menu itself is pretty large with everything from (of course) Cheesesteaks to Prime Choice (what is prime choice???…. is it the prime cut of choice grade meat, or a choice cut of prime grade meat) Rib Eye…. you can see it on the menu yourself here. Of course, it says "Angus Beef" which is a branded beef, but not "Certified Angus Beef" which is a special industry designation. Enough of that, I was here for a Mushroom Steak & Onions with Cheese ($7.75). I of course, ordered mine with provolone.

There were a couple of things that held this cheesesteak back in my opinion. First, the roll was ice cold and flaccid, it could have used a bit of heat or mild toasting. Second, there wasn't enough cheese to create a nice gooey texture, and not much of the milky flavor I want from provolone. The portion size was good, the beefy flavor rather mild. mushrooms sparce, but at least they weren't canned.

Sunday Stuffs (from China edition): Guai Wei Can Dou (strange flavor broad beans 怪味蚕豆), Cumin Powder and an addition to “everything tastes better” in a Banh Mi, and other stuff……

No, those aren't some turds laid on our dining room table by some strange insect…… it's my tri-weekly ration of Guai Wei Can Dou – strange flavored broad beans (or horse beans, or fava beans). For me this stuff is addicting…. the Missus has to lock these away.

On our first day in Nanjing, the Missus rushed to a snack vendor when She saw this……

 I had a taste, and it was love at first bite! Guai Wei (strange flavor), is a flavoring unique to Sichuan province. This "strange flavor" is a combination of sweet-spicy-salty, and most of all, courtesy of a good amount of Sichuan Peppercorns; numbing. This version isn't like the package versions we had, it's also a bit chewy and sticky. I think the Missus bought a kilo (or two), and we had these during the rest of our trip.

So naturally, when we hit Chengdu, we went snack shopping. The Missus bought several varieties, two of each, one for us, and one for Her Dad.

Of course, we've yet to open this package. While sharing a sample with friends of my MIL, I was asked what made this taste so good…… my reply, "I think it's the crack they add in at the end."

Even though I've seen some pseudo versions of these at the market, they don't look particularly enticing, so I think it'll be a sad day when this is gone. On the bright side, Fuchsia Dunlop has a recipe for Strange Flavor Peanuts in her book Land of Plenty. We may just have to try it out.

Ground Cumin from Sichuan:

06012010 020To say this package of ground cumin is very fragrant is to say…. well…. let's put it this way: even when wrapped in plastic wrap, given its own ziploc bag, and riding solo in its own pocket…. at no time did I ever say to myself "hmmm, I wonder where that package of ground cumin is???" So naturally one of the first things I made when we got home was my Cumin Lamb (Zi Ran Yang Rou). Man, it came out so good that I've made it three times since.

So I went back in and bought one of their Baguettes ($1.25). I sauteed some red bell peppers and onions with minced garlic, cumin, soy sauce, and salt, which added sweetness and a mild crunch. I topped it off with cilantro leaves and sriracha. I gotta say, this was pretty darn good. Next up, cumin lamb tacos anyone????

Midweek Meanderings: Guess who’s back? And some other stuff.

On Monday my phone rang, when I answered this is what I heard: "HeyKirk-sanguesswhatI'mbackinthegame….." Of course I knew the voice, and when he slowed down enough, Sam explained that after being a gun, or is that a knife for hire the last year and a half or so, he had decided it was time to do his own thing again. He had also just taken possession of the keys and wanted me to drop by. So I did, and we had a nice chat:

Sam has taken the reigns as of last evening. Sam told me that on July 1st, a name change will occur, and Convoy Sushi will become "Sushi Yaro". And it seems that Sam is trying to keep up with trends, and is utilizing Social Media…… you can check him out on Twitter - under 'SushiYaro'.

Sam told me specifically that he is aiming for that middle ground, "much better than Sushi Deli, but not as expensive as Ota or Shirahama." And at least to me, San Diego is missing that "Sushi Komasa – Sushi Gen – Sushi go 55" level of sushi. So we'll see…….

Trying to keep the pounds I lost in China off, I decided to walk the couple blocks to the drug store instead of driving. Passing a big apartment complex, something caught my eye…… and I did a double, then a triple take…..

At first I thought someone was playing around with one of those duck decoy things….. but as I approached the duck warned me off with a vigorous "wack – wack". It was a real duck!

I then saw a woman unloading some groceries from her car and asked what is probably the dumbest question of the week (though it's still only Wednesday), "excuse me, but is that your duck?" The woman rightfully gave me a weird look, then she saw the duck, and laughed, "oh them, there's a bunch of ducks that fly up here every summer and hang up by the swimming pool….. his girlfriend is somewhere around here…" I wasn't sure if the woman was kidding me….. we've been living in this neighborhood for seven years, and I swear, I've never seen a duck. Just then I heard another "wack -wack", and I'll be darned, it was a female duck hanging out under some hedges…… I'm still not convinced that these aren't someone's pet…. but in an apartment complex? I'm confused… have any of you heard of flocks of migrating ducks hanging out around swimming pools in San Diego???? Was the woman pulling my leg???

You can tell who I was cheering for in the Super Bowl by the ingredients in the photo to the right. I made some Red Beans and Rice for a potluck the Missus had to attend on Saturday. And I guess this time I didn't jinx the team I was hoping would win.

But as long as I can remember I've loved this. It used to be only tuna salad made with celery and onions, cucumbers, and tomato slices. Over the years, I've found that I enjoy sprouts in my sandwich. It can't be a tuna melt……… Also, in a classic example of brand loyalty, the mayo has to be Best Foods. One other strange example of brand loyalty, and maybe just a bit of weirdness, the tuna has to be Coral Brand.

You'll never see me ordering a "tuna salad" anywhere…. I need to make it myself. I guess you could say, I just don't trust anyone else with this. The sandwich isn't "stuffed" and oozing tuna salad as proportion is important to me.

One of my favorite FOYs(Friends of Yoso) is “Canine Cologne”, whose blog Pink Candles at Ridgemont High is fun, delicious (in the virtual kinda way), and also somewhat nostalgic. One of my favorite series of posts that CC does is called ABC Music Videos, where Ms Cologne (he-he-he) posts music videos every week based on letters of the alphabet. I’ve kidded CC that one day I’d do a “homage” of sorts to her ABC videos….. and I think I found what I needed…. so without further ado:


A is for Akebono:







Yes, these are actually commercials for the series “Glee” in Japan. And in case you don’t know who Akebono is you can find more info here. Funny thing, I actually saw Akebono, when he was Chad Rowan playing basketball for Hawaii Pacific University!!!


Anyway, for some reason the commercials made me smile….. Hey, it coulda been KennyG ok!!!!

Monday Meanderings……….

 They Call it Stormy Monday – T-Bone Walker.

Well the first part of that is true….. hope the second isn't! Sheesh, talk about a blustery Monday. Today was the Martin Luther King Jr Holiday, so I had the day off. The Missus, never good with dates, had lunch scheduled with Her friends, so I stayed home, took naps, and had a nice little lunch.

This is a bit of an interesting post……. mainly because I haven't posted on the two restaurants that provided the food for my lunch yet. But what the heck, right?

First off, we finally found some frozen Jiaozi that we like, both in quality, and price (50 for $10). From Dean Sin World in Monterey Park. It holds up well after freezing as you can tell by the wrappers:

I think the filling is just enough, and the flavor is good. I thought it interesting that Savoy Cabbage is used in the filling rather than Napa Cabbage, but it does well. It isn't as good as what Qing Dao Bread Food puts out, but is much better than what I can get in any restaurant in San Diego.

I'm including my photo of the pounded garlic and vinegar so the Missus can critique it and give me another thumbs down…. apparently, I still don't know how to do this! he-he-he…. I can't pound garlic in my own kitchen!

This was from one of the few Hunan Restaurants I haven't posted on in the area(SGV). Actually, this tasted much better today…… more spicy, and the smokiness of the pork had taken.

After which I had a nice nap……..  I'm feeling so lazy, so why not a little lazy Monday post?

We need the rain here in SoCal, but man am I going to miss the spring like weather we had for a couple of weeks. On the days when I didn't do a post, I'd just hang out outside…..have a cold one, and grill up chicken on the Hida Konro.

Yes, I could only grill one piece of chicken at a time….. but the process was so relaxing, almost cathartic. And you can't beat the flavor of Binchotan.

mmm-yoso!!! is a blog about food.  It's written by a few friends, all who have different backgrounds, cravings and locations.  Today, Kirk, ed (from Yuma) and Vicky are discovering things to write about and Cathy is writing.

Hi.  I hope the year is going well for you. I'm trying to stick to one of my resolutions from last year  and slowing down to savor life for a short time every single day. It isn't as easy to do as you may think.  Incorporating food along with slowing down. Daily.

Where you can order a 3 cup French Press of any coffee they sell for $3.50. It is brewed and brought out to you.081
I noticed in the refrigerator section these Macarons, made in France exclusively for Starbucks.  $10 for 12 of them and so *very* good. Flavored in pistachio, coffee, lemon, raspberry, vanilla and chocolate…light, airy with a crunchy crust, chewy cake like piece surrounding the creamy fondant-like fillings, all rich in flavor.  Decadent and delightful.  (Trader Joe's is selling a pack of 6 vanilla and 6 chocolate in their freezer section – the package does not indicate where they are made, but I suspect not in the USA.) One of the Starbucks Baristas said she thought the macarons may be seasonal, so if you see them in the refrigerator, grab a box…or something else to have with your coffee.

The other day, The Mister and I ventured into Tender Greens  again, and noticed they were offering a charcuterie plate for $10, so we ordered it. (The three slices at 12 o'clock are tuna, the one at 3 o'clock is a ham and the other two are some sort of wonderful house made salamis, one of them Fra'Mani- neither were too spicy) The house made meats were wonderful.   010We also shared a grilled vegetable salad ($10)-Lettuces topped with grilled mushrooms, cauliflower, zucchini, brussels sprouts, baby parsnips and baby carrots, red pepper and topped with Parmesan and a tomato vinaigrette. Refreshing and making a light meal.

The cheese plate ($6) was an excellent dessert.  There were four cheeses, two cheddars and two Jacks.  One of the Jacks was a smoked cheese, which I usually do not like, but the texture and pairing it with the apple made it pleasantly tasty. That's a spicy apple puree on the plate, served with more slices of grilled bread brushed with olive oil.  We even shared a glass of Spanish white wine ($7).  A nice, light, healthy-ish meal. Something we don't always enjoy.   039 
One day, we stopped at Cafe Venti, in the same mall as the  Original Tajima and ordered dessert (they also make panini sandwiches here).  To share. 045
 The Waffle-Yo: a fresh made waffle, topped with (choice of two) plain and mango yogurt, fresh kiwi, strawberries and mango as well as small mochi. (~$7). A lot of food here and we needed to share it.  Very good, very fresh. The yogurt is tangy, the way I like it.047A latte ($3.75) and water accompanied our snack.  

We sat down and talked for each of these small interludes.  We didn't take anything "to go" and did not rush.  So far, I have stuck to one of my 2009 Resolutions and have added a few for 2010. It isn't easy some days, but it has been so enjoyable on other days.   I hope you are finding your resolutions enjoyable and not a burden.
