Midweek Meme – 10 Photos

Last week FOY Kat, of Our Adventures in Japan tagged me for a meme, called "10 Photos". I admit that I’m usually not very good with these "meme-things". And have probably unwittingly earned a spot on the "places where memes come to die" map. But since this was a very good FOY(Friend of Yoso), and the theme didn’t sound too difficult, I thought it would be a slam dunk. WRONG!

The rules were very straightforward:
1. Post 10 of your own favorite food shots.
2. Pass the opportunity on to others by leaving a message on their comments page just so they’re aware of it.

No problemo….until I had to actually choose only 10 photos. How the heck do I choose just 10 photos? It’s like choosing 10 of my favorite children! So being the good little soldier that I am, I started thinking up different little rules, only places outside the US, only places inside the US, only places in San Diego, only places in San Diego whose name ends in "Berto". Arrgh!  I finally came up with some guidelines for myself(boy, do I need structure or what?). Only photos of  stuff I really enjoyed, and only from the last 2 years or so. So, though I really enjoyed the photo of the The Sherry Soused Spinach, 8 Minute Eggs, and Hazelnuts from Park Kitchen in Portland:

Parkkitchen09

I didn’t think it was the best item I had during that meal. (Notice how I’ve already managed to sneak extra photos in already?) So it was disqualified. This ended up being quite hard for me.  But I managed to pick a few.

So before my list, why don’t you take a gander at Kat’s 10 photos.

Here goes:

#10 – From the "did this really come out of my kitchen category?" Buta Kakuni:

10butanokakun05

#9 – From the "nothing tastes better wrapped in a leaf category". Nem Khao from Asia Cafe:

9asiacafe13

#8 – From the "it looks like it came from Lorena Bobitt’s new cookbook – Man(hood) meets grill" category. Hurts me just to think about it. De Nuong La Lot Mo Chai from Binh Dan Restaurant:

8binh_dan09

Not ba-a-a-a-ad at all!

#7 – My "MVP – Most Valuable Pescado". Cebiche Pescado from Astrid y Gaston in Miraflores(Lima):

7astridgaston09

#6 – From the "what’s a Loco like you doing in a place like this" category. The Hilo Style Loco from Leilani’s Cafe:

6aleilaniscafe07

You know I just had to sneak a Loco Moco in didn’t you?

#5 – From the "so good my arteries stood still" category. Sisig from Ed’s Bistro(how we miss you, though my Cardiologist doesn’t).

5edsbistro07

#4 – From the "even though I don’t speak Spanish, I’m glad you understood me" category. Tacos from Tacos El Compita:

4elcompita03

#3 – From the "swipe my meat" category. Prime Cap Ribeye from Tsuruhashi. Why "swipe my meat"? This photo has been used without permission 3 times.

2tsuruhashi_020

#2 – From the "kabobs of my dreams" category. Lamb Kabobs from Chef Tony(RIP):

Cheftony04

What’s better than some good "meat on a stick"?

#1 – From the "they must be using some highly addictive controlled substance" category. The Cold Sichuan Noodles from Ba Ren:

1morebaren03

I dunno why, but I just "MUST" have this at least once a month, if not more often.

Looking at my short list, there sure seemed to be quite a few photos from places that have gone out of business, like Mei Jia Deli

Dscf0254

And Thien Thanh

Thienthanh07

Sorry, just snuck in a few more photos…..it seems like I’m caught in a terminal, obsessive, death spiral….

No1noodlehouse07

MUST…STOP….NOW!

Whew, okay, so there you go. As for the tagging, if you feel the desire to keep this meme going, consider yourself tagged!

One last photo, ok? I readily admit, I really don’t know what the heck I’m doing when I take photos. It is just point and shoot(artistic composition? you’re better off trying to get me to breakdance – I wouldn’t know it if it hit me in the head). And all of these were taken with my little ol’ $200 Fuji:

I hope you enjoyed this. And WC, I know I still owe you the 5 Things About Me meme.

Thanks for the tag Kat!

Sunday Stuffs

Bale on Linda Vista is moving.

Last Sunday, I did my morning shopping at Vien Dong, and noticed that Bale had closed.

06032008_013

06032008_012 According to the sign, they will be moving to the area occupied by Dai Tan Market.

So today, while driving in the area, I drove into the parking lot of Dai Tan Market, and noticed that the place was still open. And no sign of Bale. Since it is already June; I’m wondering if something happened?

What is my favorite?

I recently received a very nice email from "TK", In the email I was asked what my favorite 8 posts were. You know, I have never even thought about that? Why 8? The Missus told me, "he must be Chinese". (Slap to the head) Yes, the number 8 is considered very lucky by the Chinese. Like my favorite watering hole back home. "8 Fat Fat 8". Thanks for the suggestion TK…..hey if you have any other ideas for a post, feel free, ok?

Unfortunately, choosing my favorite posts out of over 800 is quite a daunting task. Sort of like picking your favorite child. There are a handful of posts, like :

Hkfishball03

Hkfishball04 The Fried Pork Rectum post. BTW, that’s what it looks like to the right.

Or maybe even the Vegemite – Vege-might not post, or even the $50 Sandwich post. Maybe it was the Spam Katsu Curry. Which tasted really good, BTW.

P1060021

Or something really silly like:

P1050752_1

Young Duck Missing Parts? or even the Everything tastes better on a Banh Mi? Sometimes, the emails I receive make up most of the post, as in the case of the Bun Bo Hue Dossier.

So the 8 I came up with are:

8. Five Favorite Cookbooks Meme.

7. C is for Chicha, Chinchero, and Chicharroneria!

6. Return to Vien Dong Market

5. Maguro UnconfidentialPeru2_095

4. A Very Special Dinner in Cusco

3. Can Cau Market

2. The Missus’s One Post – Yes, the Missus actually wrote 1 post!

1. "Sam Woo the Killer Whale"

So, do you remember any specific posts? I’d love to know!

How I love reading about Road Trips:

Dsc00718_4I don’t know what it is about me and road trips. Perhaps growing up on an Island, I’ve always been fascinated with the "song of the open road". I know I really enjoy reading Cathy’s posts from the road. Right now Michael who does the wonderful San Diego based food blog, Menu In Progress, is in the midst of a road trip. You can read about it here. He’s already hit one of the places I’ve had on my "list" for the longest time, Kreuz Market in Lockhart, Texas. And eagerly feeding on Tex-Mex, Michael has coined one of my favorite phrases of the year thus far:

"In addition to being a fan of the food traditions from the source, I am also an unapologetic fan of the various regional American incarnations of Mexican food."

mmm-yoso!!! Makes 3……

You know, I almost missed it again this year. Last year it slipped my mind completely. For some reason, this year I thought it was May 27th. But I just happened to get into my time machine and took a peek at our first post; and gasp, it was dated May 26, 2005. So I rushed and made some rice, and just as I did in 2006, made a quick and dirty Spam Musubi.

05262008_021

Hmmm,  a larger candle means more melted wax to scrape off the musubi before I eat it…..

As always, thanks to each and everyone of you for visiting, commenting, the emails, and all of the wonderful recommendations that have poured in over the last 3 years. We’ve had a blast, and at last count have 850 posts, 13,ooo+ comments(though I think most of them are from me!), and over 460 different eating establishments, not including markets, fairs, etc. So it looks like it’s time for me to start returning to some of those places we haven’t posted on in a while.

I really never thought I’d be around this long.

One big mahalo to Cathy, Ed from Yuma, Vicky, mizducky, and Omar. One thing is for certain, without their help, there’s no way mmm-yoso would have lasted this long. I’m not sure how long, or how many posts I have left. And who knows, one of these days, I may even get around to "pretty-ing" things up  a bit…maybe even finally doing that custom banner I’ve been too darn lazy to do.  Until then, we’ll just keep rolling!

Thanks again everyone!

$5 Pizza – Little Caesars- Yes, Cathy also eats here.

mmm-yoso!!! is the blog about food and Cathy is the one blogging today. Kirk doesn’t want to blog.

Hello.   I decided to actually write about one of my even more bizarre food secrets- the $5 pizza.   It seems that every pizza place is offering one- usually somewhat pre-made and includes one topping.

Dsc01659

Little Caesars started out in Detroit, along with Dominoes.  I grew up in Detroit.  Those two were my pizza "standards" long before I discovered the really good stuff in Italy.  So this is more or less a "comfort food" for me.

I know some people don’t like the pizza from here, but the dough is fresh made daily and yeasty (and not that pre-made with holes punched in it refrigerated stuff), which is kind of a requirement for me to like the bready part of any meal.  The cheese is always fresh and never frozen, as other pizza chains use. I do not crave the pizza/dipping sauce from here because the herbs overpower the tomato flavor, but I know people who love it and crave it.

The pizzas at Little Caesars are usually pre- made and hot and waiting, especially around dinner time or around the time Monday Night Football is on TV.  They have a timer so you don’t get an "old" one.  I think the time limit is 10 minutes before the pizza has to be disposed of/not allowed to be sold, although I have seen the timer set to 7 minutes at one location.

Dsc01661

You can order for $4, an "Italian Cheese Bread" Dsc01660, which is the pizza dough squared and topped with only cheese and Italian herbs.  You have to wait for this to be baked, so you can also ask for your $5 pizza to be made with a different one item topping.  I sometimes get mushrooms and sometimes I get a cheese pie.  I do ask that they make the cheese pie "well done" so the cheese is melted and browned.  I figure I am waiting anyhow…

It is not bad nor expensive if you need something quick, and it does reheat in the toaster oven in the morning.

Chili Cheese Fries- Compare and Contrast…

mmm-yoso!!! is a blog.  About "food".  Sometimes we stretch the definition of "food" and "meals" we ate.  This is one of those times.

Hi. Cathy here again, with a kind of "research" food post. All done with the purpose of informing you, our dear readers, about some sort of food item…

The following are ranked in ascending order.

It seems everyone is offering chili cheese fries as a side, or as a meal lately and I thought I would give you my take on this kind of meal or side dish. Dsc01593_2 So, lets start out with the "original" in a sense…Weinerschintzel. As you can see, in order to fully enjoy the meal at "Der Schnitz", we indulged in corn dogs and a chili dog (the beef one: I went crazy with my tax refund this year and decided to spring for it) topped with mustard and onions. Let’s just say the chili is…um…’meaty’, with many chunks of the same shape and size of ‘meat’ in it….very manufactured. You can see the cheese is not melted (but that eventually happened) and the fries are…skinny and not crispy. Not my favorite. But, for $1.59, what should I expect? I do love the Tastee Freeze ice cream and shakes here, though.

Dsc01617_2 Del Taco has jumped into the fray and is offering a $1 off coupon to try the Chili Cheddar fries, making the final price about $1.50.  I do like the Del Taco quesedillas because they are made with Cheddar…and the cheese part of this meal was indeed excellent.  The fries stayed crispy.  The chili was OK, not too spicy ( I ended up adding some hot sauce after a while) and the overall effect was that I thought if I was at Del Taco, I should get something a bit more ‘Mexican’ in style to eat here…although, as you can see, I got a burger to round out the flavors…

Chilicheesfries_002 Now, the most popular ad campaign going.  Carl’s Jr and the Chili Cheese Fry extravaganza.    Messy, sloppy, all over your face.

The fries stayed crispy, the cheese is real and good…and the chili- it is hot dog chili, Coney Island chili…*really* good chili.  I could eat a bowl of this stuff with some oyster crackers and be *very* happy.

As a side order, $2.79- and worth it.  But, I saw that you can substitute for an additional charge with any Combo meal.  Lovely stuff.Chilicheesefries_001

I could not help but mention a similar "meal" based with fries that you can purchase for a mere $2.89 at In-N-Out.  It is the only reason you get the hermetically sealed fork/salt napkin packet.

Yes.

Animal Fries.

Not on the menu you look at.  You must know there is a "Secret Menu", right ?(Hint: Google "In-N-Out Secret Menu")  Chilicheesefries_002

Why do these fries taste superior? In-N-Out does not have a freezer.  The potatoes are cut fresh- you can watch the people doing it before they dump them into the fryer.

The fries are topped cheese.  It melts.  Then topped with grilled onions.  Crispy, burned grilled onions…so that sort of helps with a "chili" flavor, since onions are part of the base of chili…right??

Then all of it is topped with the sauce that is normally used on the burgers.  Pretty much a nice, fresh Thousand Island-ish sauce…relish and that pinky-peachy salad dressing.

All good.  Some better.  Hope you are having a nice middle of the week.

Why you shouldn’t ask for recipes from relatives in China…….

Years ago, when we were living in Rowland Heights, I loved the Dao Ko Chicken from, of all places the deli case of Hong Kong Market. Wanting to make this, and unable to find any recipes, the Missus asked Her Mom to ask relatives in China for a recipe. And this is what we received. this may be the only time you’ll see me use the word "Authentic" in a post………say hello to an "Authentic" Chinese recipe!

Just for your entertainment, it starts out with "kill the chicken", "put into hot water for 5 minutes",  "get rid of the feathers and innards….", "fold the wings and beak together, fold the legs into the stomach"…. you get the picture. I guess this assumes you’re able to "catch the chicken in the first place." It even goes into "degrees of salinity", which is what happens when you ask Chemists for a recipe…… I love my In-Laws dearly, they know I enjoy Dao Ko Chicken so much, that they went through the effort to hunt down the Missus’s "Uncle in Law" for the recipe.

We actually tried making this……step by step, shopping for all the strange herbs, making a dark medicinal broth which created a potent toxic cloud(good thing we were still renting at the time)….and then the Missus read the part about the recipe being for 30 chickens!

All to create the elusive Dao Ko Chicken I love so much……anyone have a recipe, where I don’t have to "kill the chicken"? To add insult to injury, shortly after we tried making this, Hong Kong Market discontinued their cold deli. And though we’ve had other versions of the chicken, they were never quite as good. But of course, there’s always a "silver lining", the Missus was taking a creative writing course, and wrote an essay about this debacle…..and got an "A" for her class! I never got the chicken though……

Stat tuned for more restaurants tomorrow!

The Missus’s Latest Feet-ish…..

Just a short post tonight…..today was jury duty day, and it’s amazing how sitting around for 8-9 hours just saps your energy……

So what is, or more precisely was (She has since moved on….) the Missus’s obsession?

Feet, umm feast your eyes on this:

01262008_002

How the Missus could just wake up one morning, turn to me, and tell me, "I want some chicken feet"….for some reason that just sounds wrong. So, over the past 2 weeks, She’s been feeting feasting on chicken feet, usually getting them 2 orders at a time. So here’s how the Missus rates the chicken feet, which my Filipino friends call "adidas", from the various Dim Sum restaurants in the Convoy area.

1 – Jasmine.

Jasmine206

The Missus’s favorite by a mile…to quote, "plump, juicy, nice skin, nice gelatin, lots of black bean…..on the oily/greasy side."

2 – Emerald

12202008_020

"Ok, not as greasy as Jasmine, lots of skin, but not much flavor…"

3 – China Max(photo top of post)

"Bland, not enough black bean, tough…..the toes felt hard like I was eating giant toenails…."

So there you go, more than you ever wanted to know about the Missus’s preferences when it comes to chicken feet. There is one major upside for me…..having the Missus concentrating on Her chicken feet, means more of this stuff for me:

El Roberto’s, The Battle of the ‘berto’s, and a contest

If you’ve been in San Diego long enough, or are an ex-pat San Diegan, all you need to do is mention the name of a taco shop that goes “Something” – berto’s……be it ‘Ai’, ‘Roi’, or the one and only Roberto’s, and the first thing that will come to mind will probably be a representation of the quintessential San Diego Taco Shop. Serving up stuff like California Burritos(carne asada & fries), Rolled Tacos(aka Taquitos), and the classic Carne Asada Burrito…or what Jay, proprietor of The Linkery, calls the ‘CAB’. I guess it just shows the power of branding….you can just add whatever prefix you want(within reason – I don’t think Rodent-O-Bertos would work real well, though the name Shigella-bertos has a ring to it), and suddenly you are a San Diego Taco Shop. Just looking at a list of current “Something” – berto’s goes to prove my point….they range from rather tasty(Hamberto’s anyone?), to something with a bit more action(Ramberto’s), to places I may give thought to before entering(Rigoberto’s). I can’t think of anything else quite like this….I mean there is 97 Supermarket, which looks strangely similar to 99 Ranch Market, and perhaps a few other examples, but nothing to the extent of the berto’s. I’ve personally tried to cook up a few similar schemes that have never panned out. I had the idea to hire a bunch of surly Chinese wait staff, buy as many “San Gabriel” sticky tables as I could, and bring in white paper-hatted Cooks with questionable hygienic habits, and open my Chinese BBQ, calling it Sam-my Woof BBQ, but that never panned out. I had the great idea(or maybe it was just brain freeze) of selling super tart fro-yo…..2 oz frozen yogurt, which you top, nay bury, with 6 ounces of various toppings (which you can buy in bulk from Henry’s), and selling it for $8 a cup….calling it Pink-buried. But as with many of these bright ideas…it just never took off.

Which leads me to El Roberto’s:

There I was minding my own business, in a strip mall on the corner of Murphy Canyon Road and Aero Drive, when I saw this sign:

Elroberto01

Geez, I didn’t know there was a Roberto’s here…..my stomach started growling. As I walked up to the shop, the truth was revealed:

Elroberto02

Hmmm, I didn’t see an L, um ‘El’ in front of Robertos on the large sign in the front of the restaurant. I got a chuckle out of that. Still, I decided, or my stomach decided, to grab a bite. The interior of El Roberto’s is simple, but man is that counter built high…..

Elroberto05

The menu listed a good 15 or so burritos……..

Elroberto0501

I decided to order a Texas Burrito($4.10). A Texas Burrito, by San Diego Taco Shop standards is a Pollo Asado(chicken) and French Fry(yes, french fries) burrito, sometimes with Pico de Gallo(basically a tomato and onion condiment), and sometimes guacamole.

Elroberto03

Elroberto04 This was not a very good version of a Texas Burrito. The fries were fine, but finding any chicken in the burrito was an experience akin to finding “gold in them dere hills”…… What was worse was the very sour hot sauce….

But heck….something more than the “Something” – berto’s name keeps this place in business, right?

El Roberto
3755 Murphy Canyon Rd.
San Diego, CA 92123

Have I told you about my latest project? It’s a chain I’ll call Cuy-potle, specializing in burritos featuring free-range, alfalfa fed, Cavia porcellus, humanely slaughtered. The burritos contain 1 ounce of Cuy meat, along with 16  ounces of various pseudo-Mexican sauces, rice, beans, and salsas..creating a boat-sized burrito that defies the term healthy eating! Hmmm, looks like I’ll need some help with this one…maybe the team of wordsmith Elmo Monster and marketing genius Eatdrinknbmerry will come on board…..we’d be unbeatable!

The Battle of the Berto’s:

So what about the Carne Asada Burrito at L El-Roberto’s, you may ask? Wel12202008_008_2l, I did manage to try the  CAB at El Roberto’s…recently, the one and only Howie who does the excellent A Foodie Eye’s View. Invited the Missus and I to what he called the Battle of the Bertos. We managed a tasting of 10 different Carne Asada Burritos, from random “Something” – berto’s around San Diego. It was a fun and interesting time…though I don’t think I’ll be having another CAB for a while!12202008_011

So to quote Howie; “Which Berto Reigns Supreme?” You’ll just have to check out the results here. You can also vote on your personal favorite “Berto”. In case you were wondering, the Missus(otherwise known as The Missusberto), and yours-truly-berto came up with almost the exact sam12202008_014e results in our blind tasting…..

And to add even more “cred” to the project, the Arbiter, was a vegetarian! Who deserves major props for first, dealing with a group of “crazed carne asada Psychos”. And secondly, for dealing with the “smell of grilled beef” permeating our very being……

And just in case you wanted to know what the post-bertos scene was like….this is the aftermath:

12202008_016

The Name Your (Faux)Berto Contest:

I’ve always poked fun at the proliferation of these “Something”-berto places. It is quite entertaining when driving to think up stuff like:

Vito-Bertos – “You better like our meatball burrito, or else….”

or

PETA-Bertos – At least you can be sure that the fur growing in your burrito didn’t come from a living creature…I’m sure that would be comforting!

I’m also sure you’re much more creative than I am, so come up with your best “Something” – berto’s name and tagline, and/or menu item, and send it to me via email at mmm-yoso@hotmail.com, I’ll pick my 3 favorite names, and I’ll also forward the list to Howie, to pick his 3 favorites…and I’ll send the winners a Peet’s Ecup of coffee. One winner per IP address, and try to keep it clean, ok? I’ll list the winners mid-week. The contest closes midnight on Sunday, 01/27/08…after all, I know you’re all creative geniuses, with an unending flow of ideas….and my personal CPU can’t deal with that!

So let’s see what Faux-berto’s you come up with.

Sunday Stuffs

Just a random "potpourri" of stuffs……

The latest sign at Marukai:

The latest sign says February 1st for Marukai Market. I hope so.

Chilango’s Reopening?

When we first moved to San Diego, we visited Chilango’s in Hillcrest several times, and really enjoyed ourselves. I was getting a post ready, when I found out that the Owners of Chilango’s had hired some Itamae, and opened up what amounted to a Japanese Fast-Food restaurant. Today, during the usual trip, I noticed the sign was gone, and the Chilango’s sign was back up!

01192008_011

So is Chilango’s reopening? A second "I hope so" for this one.

Finally, a funny YouTube from Andy the ABC:

He even mentions mmm-yoso!!! Enjoy:

Thanks Andy! We love it! And one day we hope to be in Taiwan, though I’m not quite sure I’d have what you did…….

You never know what you’ll find on Imperial Avenue:

I was driving along a few weekends ago. I’d already grabbed some tacos from El Compita, but in the parking lot of the former El Comal, now called something like Casa el Pepe(2822 Imperial Ave), was some major Polo asada being grilled. If I hadn’t already grabbed some tacos, I’d have stopped. I did manage to snap a quick photo:

01192008_001

I’m hoping to check it out in the coming weeks……

I hope everyone is having a great weekend!

Another Year

Is almost in the books. Looking back it’s been a pretty good one for new eats in San Diego. Here’s my fearsome foursome of new restaurants that opened this past year:

Early in the year Tsuruhashi opened up, and brought us some good yakiniku.

In April Latin Chef opened up, serving up tasty Peruvian from a tiny shop in Pacific Beach:

The tasty Cebiches and Tiradito provided a delish segue for our trip to Peru. It was nice to see that Latin Chef’s Owner, Freddy, has now acquired the shop next door, doubling the restaurant’s floor space.

During the summer, San Diego’s first Vietnamese Crawfish restaurant, Crab Hut opened.

I’m guessing business must be good, since a few months back a second Crawfish boil opened close by.
