Wednesday Wanderings

Just a few items for your "hump day"!

Jeong Won Korean BBQ:

During our visit to Spicy City I noticed the sign for a new Korean BBQ opening up next door:

I asked around and was told one of the former Owners of Arirang House has decided to get back into the restaurant business. There sure seems to be a lot of activity in the Clairemont area. The location is 4690 Convoy St.

02252008_001 China Chef Temporarily Closed:

During one of my trips to the Mira Mesa area, I noticed that China Chef appeared to be closed. I did a U-turn and drove into the mall to check things out. Per the sign it looks like they are temporarily closed, and set to reopen on March 3rd.

Party, party, party!!!

To quote my "nephew"(my good friend's son)….as a 2 year old, whenever we were set to go to the zoo, Sealife Park, or someother activity. I sure do miss those days.

In that vein, I recently celebrated yet another Birthday. MrB and I both celebrate our Birthdays in February, so it has become sort of a tradition over the last few years to get together and have a party of sorts. MG is the most generous Hostess, and always feeds us well. And as you'll notice, most of the dishes are pretty much targeted toward my appetite.

MG's knowing that I love Kaldereta had her cousin make some Kaldereta! delici-yoso!!!

I was asked for the one dish that I wanted. Having heard so much about the Sisig from Conching's Cafe, but never having the planets aligned during my visits, I requested it:

It is as good as advertised, perfectly balanced. Even the Missus, who "doesn't eat pork" (somehow Bi, Crispy Pata, et al aren't pork?), had 3 servings.

The rest of the good stuff:

AmyA baked us a wonderful cake….but please don't ask what the "numbers" mean…nothing good can come out of that!

There are few things better than a Filipino party! There is a downside though; hearing me sing "Achy Breaky Heart" on the Magic Microphone is enough to spoil the heartiest appetite. As always MG, thanks for your warmth and generosity!

I hope everyone is having a great week!

  1. Happy Birthday, Kirk!! Love the blog, I’ve been reading it now for years. The chicken wings in the picture look to be the ‘crack’ wings from Royal Mandarin – is that true? If so, I was wondering where the pancit and lumpia and (I don’t know what the fourth item is) came from..? Did they also come from Royal Mandarin?
All the wonderful party dishes are making me hungry this morning – gee, can you tell?

  2. Happy BB-Day, Kirk!
    Wow! That pancit looks wonderful!!
I wish I had friends like your MG!
I love your “the Missus, who ‘doesn’t eat pork’ comment. LOL! Too funny!

  3. Happy B-Day old man!!!!
I can’t believe you ate that pork dish I wouldn’t blame you I would too. How could anyone resist!

  4. Happy Birthday Kirk!
    Thanks for the great blog.
The food looks yummy. What are the 2 dishes after the lumpia? Looks good.

  5. Hi Blizzardi – Thanks so much for the kind words. Since we were in the Eastlake area – the wings are from Mandarin Restaurant:

The other food(lumpia, pancit, empanadas) came from a friend of MG’s Mom who does some catering side jobs!
Hi GF, Kat, Rob, Jenny, Darqrat, Liver – Thanks so much…now I’m kinda embarassing about mentioning my B-Day!
Hi Penny – I’d have been happy with just the Sisig(and the Kaldereta)!
Hi Trent – LOL! Yep, they just hose off the Formaldehyde every morning, wind me up and off I go! ;o)
Hi Bri – MG and Her family are wonderful friends. The Missus kept telling us She didn’t eat pork…as spoonful after spoonful of Sisig entered Her mouth!
Hi Billy – Yep, Sisig…..wonderful Sisig!
Hi Elmo – Thanks….as for Sisig, you and me both, man! This one was really good!
Hi Stephen – Thanks so much. After the lumpia is pancit bihon and empanadas.

  6. Happy. Happy. Joy. Joy!
Happy Bird-day, Kirk! As the case of filipinos celebrating…anything, we usually go all out. Right!?!
On another note, since you mentioned that MG’s mom does some side catering jobs, would you be able to provide a contact number for her? Her empanadas and shanghai lumpias look so onolicious! Does she take orders for 50 or more pieces? I’m so interested. I’ve been looking for someone who catered those two items for a while because the person I use to order from made so much money, she bought a brand new home in Otay Ranch. And that was the end of her catering business…so sad, yah? Let me know.
Conching’s sisig and kaldereta dishes are the BEST. They just do it right…all the time!

  7. happy bday kirk! looks like you had a great time spent with good friends and of course, good food.
ain’t no filipino partay without the staples – lumpia, chickenwings, pork in some shape or form (that sisig looks mouthwatering), empanadas and pancit. they even had chinese sausage on that too! yumm!
they got you with the karaoke, did they make you dance the ocho ocho? ha.

  8. Hi Shirley – Thanks so much. I’ll try and get the info for you!
Hi CC – LOL! Ocho-ocho dance? I didn’t know what that was….I asked MG; who started cracking up and said…we don’t do that any more…we do “boom tarat tarat” and “sayaw darling”!!!!!
Hi YY – Thanks so much!
Hi Omar – The memories of the food linger on…..
    Hi MJ – I hope I haven’t triggered a craving!
Hi Carol – They throw the best parties…..everyone always has a good time!

  9. Yep, nothing says “Happy Birthday” like a boat-load of pork! Happy belated, Kirk!
(I’m wondering if that ocho-ocho dance is related in any way to that silly “Chicken Dance” I’ve had inflicted on me at too many weddings! 😀 )
