mmm-yoso makes 15.

Mmm-yoso 02I was just organizing some photos this last weekend when I suddenly realized that our little blog was turning 15! And by coincidence; this is post 4,350 – we got more posts than Pete Rose has hits!

Sheesh….15……who'd have thought when I pressed "Publish" for that first post in 2005, that we'd still be doing this fifteen years later.

Granted, this is somewhat bittersweet for us. With Covid-19 changing the way we live, socialize, work, and eat. Also, there's a reason I haven't done a "bloggaversary" post since 2009. We're usually travelling during this time of the year. Except, you know….this year has been different.

So, anyway I'd like to propose a toast to all of you; who have read, emailed, taken the time to comment on our little blog over the years! We've been honored to have been given the privilege of sharing our meals and travels with all of you.

Thank you again from the bottom of our hungry little hearts. And who knows, maybe I will get to 5,000 posts?

And, I'm kinda wondering, when did you start reading?

Thanks again! Take Care!

  1. Awesome achievement. I can’t remember when I started following your blog but I’m sure it was probably near the start of food blogging. I think now more then ever your blog is helping to keep some sense of normalcy even though you can’t do dine in. Even though I don’t comment regularly I do check in every day to see what you are up to or Cathy.

  2. Congratulations to the blog and to you Kirk! What an achievement! It’s been an absolute pleasure to read you for so many years. Many blogs have come and gone, but that this has remained is a true testament of your discipline. The ones that should be thanked are most certainly you and the Missus for letting us in and sharing this aspect of your lives for so long. It’s been truly wonderful to read your thoughtful insights on any number of things and to stay updated on the things in your life that bring you pleasure.
Here’s to many years more of this blog, and many years more of good eats and health to the both of you!

  3. Cheers to you and your wonderful blog! Thanks for sharing with all of us for so many years.

  4. Congratulations and thank you for being one of my favorite food blogs in San Diego. Here’s to another 15 years.

  5. Congratulations on 15 years! It seemed like everyone and their mother had a food blog in the early days, and most of blogs have faded away. I honestly don’t remember when I started reading mmm-yoso, but you have been a valuable resource for food and travel. Thank you!

  6. Since 2006 UCSD days in the era of Ba Ren’s legacy and the like. Although I don’t live there anymore, I still enjoy reading the blog. Great job to the team for keeping it up!

  7. Thanks so much Kyle! Having the blog has always given me a bit of an “anchor” and routine. Hope all is well!
Thanks HH…..though it might be that I’m hungry all the time rather than discipline. ;o)
Hi Ken – Nice to hear from you! Thanks for reading, commenting, and all the wonderful emails!
Hi Loren – Thanks so much! I’ve always appreciated the recommendations as well!
Thanks Sandy! I’ve always appreciated all the comments. And looking back; it seems like somewhere around 2007 or so?
Oh my Ba Ren! Thanks for keeping up with us even though you done live in SD anymore Trees! Take care and I hope you get to visit SD once in a while.

  8. Congrats on 15! I also probably started following the blog near the beginning, it’s inspired and recommended a great number of meals over the years so I definitely thank you for that!

  9. Congratulations! I love your blog and have checked out many of the places you, Cathy, and Ed have explored and tried, and have been inspired by the recipes you have posted. I especially love clicking on the links you sometimes include for a more in-depth look at the history of a place you have visited. I savor your photography, and your writing has a lovely flow. I may have been away at times, especially after developing type 2 diabetes, which made me rethink my own food obsession, but I think I have been enjoying your blog since 2007 when I wanted to find a new pho shop.
By the way, I just love the wary look this white guy was given when I first entered Mien Trung followed by the look of surprise when I finished every last drop of my very first bowl of Bun Bo Hue. I probably would have never stepped foot in the place had I not read about it here. Thanks again Kirk!

  10. Congrats. I’ve only started commenting recently but have been a lurker since 2008 or 2009. Here’s to another 15 years!

  11. Mr. K, I do hope you get to 5K and beyond. I have enjoyed every post since very close to the beginning of your blog. I cannot believe it’s been 15 years. You have done an awesome job and I have used yours and your guest posters advice over the years. Thank you for the best advice about places to eat and food to try!

  12. Thanks Candice!
I’m quite surprised folks have been reading since way back when Jason! Thanks so much for reading and taking the time out to comment all these years!
I would have really cracked up during that visit to Mien Trung Jan! Hope you are well and thanks for following all these years.
Thanks Junichi! Man, the years are really flying by now!
Hi Barbara – I have a hard time believing it’s been that long as well. Thanks for reading and hope all is well and you are in good health! Take Care!

  13. happy blogaversary! not sure when I started reading, but am happy we got to meet up twice. hoping we can see you in tokyo, so you can show us your hangout spots 🙂 looking forward to many more posts from you and the mmmyoso team!

  14. Thanks Kat! We hope to see the both of you soon…… Take care!
And great comments RonW! So nice to hear from you……I miss Hotel Waikiki!

  15. 15 years is an impressive achievement. I started following in 2012 just before moving to SD. I like that you aren’t afraid to say when the food isn’t good and for whatever reason our tastes seem to align pretty closely. I more recently discovered how wonderful the recipes portion of the blog is! Thanks so much for keeping the blog going (thanks also to Sandy and Ed too).

  16. Happy 15th anniversary! I want to say I started reading around 2016 or earlier, but didn’t start commenting until a couple years later. It’s always great to see a new post from you and guest writers. I also love how you compare previous meals and pictures as well. This blog also helped me appreciate Vietnamese food more and its history in San Diego. And got to try new places with your recommendations. I feel the website is local yet so worldly and well-traveled. Have you received an award for your blog yet? I feel like it should get some recognition!

  17. congratulations! I can’t remember when I started reading but I do know Karina (Santos) told me it was the only food blog worth reading and I took her recommendation. One of the many great things I learned from her.

  18. Congrats on 15 years! I started following in 2011, when I found out that I’d be moving to San Diego soon. Always wished we could have met and chatted over a meal IRL (who knows, might still happen!), and always grateful for your insightful and honest posts. Happy blogversary!

  19. Awesome! Happy 15!
I started I think around 2007. Moved away from San Diego but kept reading, and have been back for several years now. Keep on publishing, please!

  20. Thanks Soo!
I’m humbled RD….thanks so much. It’s always rewarding to hear that folks are able to use what we put out.
Hi Elle! Thank you for thinking of us when you find some new, good place to eat as well. We try to keep a low profile and really aren’t into rewards or any of those things. I’m just happy to have great folks like you reading and commenting!
Oh my….I really do miss Karina. We had one chance to meet up when she was visiting San Diego, but she wasn’t feeling well. She always had a great sense of humor….when she was visiting and asked for some recommendations……she was mostly eating vegetarian; I recommended Slater’s! She got a kick out of that. Thanks for visiting and taking the time out to comment Amanda. And especially for mentioning Santos! Take care!
I do hope it happens when you visit San Diego Jinxi! You know where to find me, right? I hope you are well….and do miss your posts!
My goodness, is it truly, the one and only DaveM???? Wow, hearing from you, it is indeed a special day! Please let me know if “Hot Green Peas” is going to be back “on the menu”! So nice hearing from you!

  21. Happy 15th Blogaversary Kirk! I have been reading your blog since 2006…I have enjoyed not just your posts but also posts from the late ed from Yuma and of course Cathy, who is a good friend now in real life. Glad to have met you and enjoyed meals with you as well. May you continue to have many more years of blogging (provided that you still enjoy it, have the time, etc). As always, keep the posts coming… food, travel and whatever is on your mind. Congrats again!

  22. Thanks so much CC! It’s always a pleasure seeing you. Hope all is well….and I’m still waiting on those new posts! (hint-hint) ;o) Take care!

  23. You have been a pleasure to read and an invaluable resource for me and my family to find great, local, ethnic, inexpensive and unique dining experiences. You are simply the best and please keep going.

  24. Thanks so much John! I appreciate the very kind words and am glad you are able to find some use out of our blog!
Thanks so much for the amazing compliment Wendy! And thank you so much for reading!

  25. I’ve been around since about 2007, as I mentioned before, right around the time you started your peru phase (I mean both going there and also visiting peruvian places when you got back). I’ve learned so much from your blog, both your visits to local restaurants and your travels. (unfortunately, I’ve also learned that my area, which has one of the highest concentrations of Chinese people in the US, outside of California, has unfairly poor options for real chinese food, compared to San Diego. Thai food as well. It’s all american based). I also really enjoy Cathy’s posts, and enjoyed Ed’s as well, so sad about his passing.
I found your blog through ono kine grindz, I think.
For such a long-time reader, I think I’ve only commented about 5 or 6 times, I never really have anything to add to the conversation.
Happy Blogaversary. Here’s to 15 more. Maybe you and the missus will have finished travelling the entire world by then and I look forward to reading about every location.

  26. Congratulation on your 15th year blog! I can’t believe I read your blog 10 years ago. I still have all the recipes I printed off your site. It was how I met Cathy as well. Thanks for all the recommendations and your knowledge! You are truly a food walking dictionary!

  27. Started reading in 2007 when I moved to SD. Haven’t stopped since. Congrats. I’d love to meet you and take you out for Omakase sometime. -Kevin

  28. Thanks so much H! I really have enjoyed your comments – I still have to make that schmaltz one day and loved your comment on langos. Thanks so much for reading and commenting! I really miss Reid’s posts. Take care!
Thanks so much Kevin! Perhaps we will meet to grab a bite one day….once all of this craziness is over. Thanks for reading….for man, 13 years!

  29. Congratulations! We discovered you when we first moved to SD in late 2006 from DC and were looking for a dim sum spot – and have been following your recommendations ever since. I figured since you’re a fellow local boy, you knew what you’re doing! Here’s to another 15! *shaka*

  30. hot green peas! how do you remember these things? i actually still own the domain, but don’t really use it. can’t let go…
I did a search and found a comment from me from April 2006!

  31. Thanks so much James! We’ve appreciated your comments over the years…..I’m glad our recommendations work out for you.
I’m not sure…but I tend to remember the weirdest things Dave…..don’t ask me about “necropants”, ok? ;o) My friends call me a “cesspool of useless information”. It’s great hearing from you! The domain must be telling you something……

  32. I can’t remember when I started reading, but my best guess is around 2009 or so. Keep it up and I will stay on board!

  33. Happy 15th blogiversary!! 🙂 I got curious the other day after realizing that I’ve been reading your blog since 2006 and I looked back through your archives to find the first post that led me to read mmmyoso—it was the 2006 tet festival post! I was looking up cool things to do and places to go in San Diego as preparation for moving here from Oregon and I was so intrigued by the amazing variety of food and cultures that were represented by all your posts and the food. So a very big thank you to You and The Missus for the amazing work you have done on this blog for the past 15 years!!

  34. Thanks Dereck! I’ll do my best….
    Thanks YY!
Thanks so much for reading, all your comments, and recommendations Lynnea. Our blog just wouldn’t be the same without you!

  35. Congratulations on 15!! I have to say, you are the blog that I have consistently been reading the longest. I think I started around 2006…I was in college, but missing San Diego. Your posts always made me feel like I was back home, eating some of my favorite meals. Or traveling the world, trying the same meals you guys were experiencing. Here’s to another 15!

  36. Happy 15th!
I think I came here when googling for reviews about Rickshaw Cafe. That must have been 2007ish. And then pretty soon after, you did a post about (the original) Sab E Lee, and I made sure to go try it out with a coworker. That coworker liked it so much that he started getting food from there every week.

  37. Thanks so much alnc!
Hey, so nice to hear from you MrZ! Man, Rickshaw Cafe…..now a sushi bar I think? Seems so long ago now. Hope all is well in SEA for you all! Take care!

  38. Congratulations!
I think I found your blog around 2007. Discovered a lot of great places because of this blog. Sushi Yaro, Fernandez, Taco Revolucion, Chon Ju Jip, and the “fastest Pho in the West” whose name escapes me.

  39. Congrats, old friend and blogging compadre! Although I’ve been a lurker for the past couple of years, I check up on what you’ve been eating and take your tips whenever I’m in the SD area (or in Hawaii!). You know I’ve been following you from the beginning because we started around the same time!!!
Kudos on how consistently you have kept up and maintained the quality of food journalism on this blog for so long, while the rest of us, including myself, have not.
I think you are one of the longest-running, most informative, most comprehensive, most engaging restaurant review blogs in the history of blogs.
Congrats again and I hope you continue on forever!

  40. Hey Elmo! It’s great to hear from you. Those words…coming from you mean so much and made my day! Hope all is well!

  41. Congrats! Love this blog — thanks for keeping us in the loop on your latest food discoveries — and re-discoveries!

  42. Thanks so much Kirk for all your posts (mostly here, of course, but on CH also in the earlier days). I moved here in September 2005 and found your blog while searching for restaurants before the big move. I always thought it was JV’s post that was the first one that drew me in, but I think it might have been Mama’s Lebanese (based on the dates).
You’ve never steered me wrong and I look forward to another 15 years of great meals/recommendations!

  43. Thanks so much Peter!
Wow Campy! That post on Mama’s was back in August of 2005! Thanks so much for reading and commenting all these years! I think I used to post on CH all the way back to 2001?? yikes…

  44. well here i am commenting late as usual. i read your blog regularly but only like once every couple of weeks or so and then i’ll catch up on a bunch of posts at once (and I usually only comment once in a while, although i will almost for sure comment if frankie makes an appearance). i’ve been reading since around the beginning of your blog! was looking for a noodle place to eat in L.A. and came across a link to your blog in Daily Gluttony’s page at the time. decided to email you in Feb 2006 to ask you about Noodle House of Otemoyon that disappeared from convoy around 2004 (and about Nagasaki champon). i still have that email! congrats and happy 15 years to your blog!!! it’s been my favorite food (and then travel) blog all these years. has yet to be surpassed. thank you (and your other contributors) for keeping it awesome and keeping it going all these years. here’s to many more years of your wonderful food and travel posts (and to less unusual days than these days… i hope you and the Missus can resume the traveling you like to do in the near future)! thank you for blogging these last 15 years! =)

  45. Thanks Dancing! Both Frnakie and I always appreciate and look forward to your comments! Thanks so much for reading all these years!

  46. Congrats for 15 years. What a milestone! Thank you for being so diligent with blogging especially during this time. Wishing you more happy years of writing –
