The Empanada Spot (Chula Vista)

Thank you for stopping to read this food blog, mmm-yoso!!!  Cathy is writing the post today; Kirk is busy with other things.

A few weeks ago, there was some time for cc and I to meet up and have a little food adventure.  One of the 'new to me' spots was here:

70794089835__806FB569-8EA5-412A-8A63-19791229CC63 Located the the mall on the South East corner of Third Avenue at Oxford in the Castle Park area, The Empanada Spot opened in April 2021.
IMG_9547 Step inside, order and pay and your empanada(s) will be cooked fresh to order.
IMG_9549 cc and I chose four savory flavors (there are dessert/sweet flavors available, but neither of us wanted any; we had plans). The price is $4 each.
IMG_9551 Soon, a tray with freshly fried, piping hot empanadas and accompanying salsas were brought out to us.

IMG_9552 Top left, The OG (a sort of fancy 'picadillo'-(finely chopped marinated steak, tomato sauce, potato) filling with or without olives).  Bottom left, Rajas (poblano peppers with corn, onion and cheese).   Top right, Chicharron (pork rinds in a red sauce and refried beans).  Bottom right, Shrimp and Cheese (shrimp, mozzarella, onion and bell pepper).

Each of these had an excellent, well fried crust and fresh fillings.  Of course I first tried a bite of each, plain and then with the various salsas, which were also bright tasting/very fresh and very complimentary to the fillings.  If I had to choose, I did like the rajas a bit more than the others…but I was very happy with each of these and happy to not have to choose only two flavors.  If you come here, bring someone so you can share.  The amount of food, essentially two whole empanadas, was more than enough for a meal.

Time to bring The Mister here to see which flavors he likes!

The Empanada Spot 1223 Third Ave, C1 Chula Vista, CA 91911 (619) 948-9412 Open daily 10a.m.-8 p.m.

  1. Man I haven’t been to that strip mall in ages. There used to be a Japanese video store in the back called Asahi Video when I was growing up. Empanadas look good!

  2. They were great, kat! I really did like each one. It would be very difficult if I were alone to just choose one.
Oh good you know the mall, Junichi! We were in that great area of town and also went to House of Cuban Flavor and Hogetsu (where I bought Komochi)…future posts.
