SurfSide Fish House (Scripps Ranch)

mmm-yoso!!! welcomes you to this blog about food.  As you know, Kirk is on vacation and Cathy is a bit busy right now.  But, Cathy does eat and here's a short post.

A few months ago, The Mister and I discovered a new to us seafood based casual restaurant a bit North of the 52 off of the 15, still within San Diego City limits.

Surfside Fish House opened in June.

It's one of those walk up, order, pay, have a seat and your food is brought out to you places.  There is indoor, covered outdoor and bar seating.

The simple, two-sided menu has an array of choices.

The clam chowder (cup, $4.99) is a traditional recipe, fresh made and not overloaded with potato.  It didn't seem to need any added salt and just a touch of pepper was added during the second half of eating, along with some crackers.  The bowl ($7.99) is huge and a meal in itself.

The fried calamari ($7.99) is a good size, shareable portion.  It is lightly battered with fresh herbs, fried to a light crisp.  The squid pieces are not chewy.  Could be a meal if we didn't share.  The house made tartar sauce is wonderful and the cocktail sauce has just the right amount of horseradish.

The seafood cioppino ($18.99) was the most wonderful shared  meal we had this year (both of us have been busy and have not been out to eat much at all).  The savory tomato broth is filled with shrimp, clams, mussels, squid and scallops.  Served with rice and toasted bread, it is truly perfect.

There is a Happy Hour menu (3-6 p.m. daily), but we haven't been wanting to brave the drive back home at that hour.

  1. This has been a very popular addition to the area, especially with the Happy Hour menu. I’ll have to try the seafood cioppino!

  2. That cioppino looks great, Cathy — would make the trek there just to try that. And the prices seem very reasonable for what you get.

  3. It’s really a great addition to the ‘inland’, Sandy. Happy Hour is tempting, but lately traffic is just so frustrating to me.
You’d really like it, Peter. Maybe you could venture out on a weekend.
Seasurf does have similar pricing, Soo, but no Cioppino on its menu. We liked it /2019/05/29/seasurf-fish-co-del-mar/
The cioppino was very good quality, ST.
This was a nice find for us, kat. We do enjoy seafood.

  4. Been a while since I commented. Just tried this place on Sunday. They have happy hour daily so if you don’t want to fight traffic come on a weekend. We ordered off the HH menu.
We had grilled fish tacos, oysters (3 types), chowder fries, lemon pepper wings, clams with chorizo and some sort of tomato broth, and Korean chili glazed shishito peppers.
Out of all those things we tried we liked the oysters at $1.50 each, the shishitos and we were split on the clams. The wings were okay, a little on the small side and were fine flavor wise but not the juiciest. The fries they use are similar to McDonalds fries. We wouldn’t recommend the grilled fish tacos. Maybe their fried fish tacos are better.
Solid value but most of the items we ordered were average.

  5. Well, HH doesn’t seem the way to go, Kha. The Mister was raised in Boston, so his seafood preferences go toward steamed clams, clam chowder, basic fish & chips (as well as the locally/Boston available baked scrod and twin lobster). But since it is available on the weekend, we might be trying some of the HH menu. {You are welcome to this side of the blog anytime (I see you last commented 13 months ago).}
