Mary-Etta’s (El Cajon) (again)

mmm-yoso!!! is being written by Cathy while Kirk and His Missus are vacationing.

I haven't posted about Mary Etta's since 2016, when The Mister and I enjoyed a breakfast at the counter.

IMG_0225

Recently, I took my brother here before his drive home because he said he wanted 'something like lunch', while I was wanting breakfast.

IMG_9629

This long time (since 1935) cafe, mostly patronized by locals (it's on Olde Highway 80, parallel to and South of the 8, in the Flinn Springs area-close to Lakeside) is known for making their own breakfast sausage.  They serve both sides of the menu all day.

IMG_0226

IMG_0227
Lately, I've been craving pancakes, and it's always been too busy to make them at home.  The two egg, bacon and pancake plate ($12.75) was my order.  The perfectly prepared over-easy eggs were runny and dip-able with pancake pieces.  The flapjacks were lightly crisp on the exterior and wonderfully fluffy and had just the right amount of sweetness to satisfy me.  The bacon was not too thick nor thin; it did have flavor.  So many times I have been disappointed with bacon to the point that it is rarely ordered.

IMG_9637

My brother decided on a sausage burger ($13.50); it's the breakfast sausage with cheese (add $1) (he chose pepperjack) and got the breakfast country fries on the side-the thinly sliced, fried crisp potatoes are also pretty unique here.  The breakfast sausage patty was hefty, coarse ground and filled with fresh herbs and spices.  It was served on a toasted sesame seeded bun, which was very nice.  Lettuce, tomato, pickles and onions were on the side.  My brother approved.

IMG_9633

Fresh coffee, refilled in mismatched cups, friendly service and great food.

Daybreak Island Grill – Breakfasts with JJ

I was looking for dog friendly places to get breakfast with JJ and also places where he can explore a bit. He likes "new" things, so this has gotten me to neighborhoods where one can walk and explore. Which is why we did North Park and Flora, University Heights and Parkhouse Eatery, and even Carlsbad and Wildland. Looking over things; it seemed like OB would be nice neighborhood for JJ, fun and funky, and laid back. I did a bit of research and found a listing for a restaurant named Daybreak Island Cafe. I checked out the Website and the "About Us" section which mentions stuff like taro and sweet potatoes. Google lists them as a "Hawaiian Restaurant". But when I looked over the menu, well it just seemed that there were just a few items that I grew up eating, like Portuguese Sausage and Kalua Pork on the menu. Hmmm……

Finally, while looking at the "four lettered" website I found this quoted in the "About the Business" section:

Daybreak About Us

Not a big deal really, I just wanted to know what to expect.

So, early on a Sunday, I drove with JJ down West Point Loma and found the very "beachy-tiki" looking restaurant right by the roundabout near Robb Field. It's a less hectic spot just a few blocks down from Voltaire.

Daybreak Island Grill 01

Daybreak Island Grill 01c

It's quite charming……

Daybreak Island Grill 02b

With a nice outdoor tiki bar on one side and a covered patio area on the other….great for really hot days.

Daybreak Island Grill 03

And yes, the place is super dog friendly.

Daybreak Island Grill 04

No where was this more evident than in our Server; Monica who was super warm and friendly…she treated JJ like a little prince!

Daybreak Island Grill 05

Not much "local kine" stuffs on the menu. I decided to order the "Hawaiian" Breakfast Bowl, but they were out of Portuguese Sausage….so I went with the Loco Moco ($18). I liked that they actually have Tabasco, a necessity for my Loco Moco's since small kid time.

Daybreak Island Grill 06

The loco moco soon arrived….of course no mac salad on this one. It looked kinda manini for eighteen bucks, but with prices going crazy these days.

Daybreak Island Grill 07  Daybreak Island Grill 10 So, here's the score using the Modified Rubio Scale.

BURGER: On the leaner side and chewy, but with a decent char and beefiness – 3.5

EGGS: Nice and runny. Would have appreciated some crisp edges. No off flavors. – 3.0

RICE: Was fine; on the mushier side. – 2.5

GRAVY: A bit on the runny side, edged on very salty. – 2.5

Daybreak Island Grill 09 STUFFS: While eating, I noticed a gluey component under the eggs.  Not a fun texture and quite bland. Looking over the menu; I guess they also include sausage gravy with this? Overkill in my opinion. 1.0

Well, 12.5….exactly an average score! Not sure if it's worth $18 though.

I asked Monica what kind of Portuguese Sausage was used for the bowl and she didn't know. She was so nice to JJ, that we decided to return.

Daybreak Island Grill 11

And Monica was working again…and JJ even remembered her!

Daybreak Island Grill 12

This time a glanced around and saw that along with the Tabasco, they seem to carry some very appropriate condiments.

Daybreak Island Grill 12a

Daybreak Island Grill 12b

I wonder if they use Best Foods for their Mac Salad and is the ketchup Del Monte????

Anyway, they had the Hawaiian Breakfast Bowl ($14.75) available this morning.

Daybreak Island Grill 13 Daybreak Island Grill 14  Not sure about the Pico de Gallo as a side….funny, at first glance I thought it was Lomi Salmon! Four rather slices of Port Sausage; based on the texture and taste, I'm thinking this seemed like Redondo's? I'm fully "team Purity", but this was fine. Two scoops rice and two easy over eggs completed the set. The scoops of rice seemed on the smallish side; but I can't put it away like I used to, so this was fine. The rice was perfectly cooked and the eggs nice and runny.

Daybreak Island Grill 15

While I'm not sure this was worth almost fifteen bucks; I enjoyed the service and Monica treated JJ like a little prince…a very spoiled prince at that! And that is worth something to me.

Daybreak Island Grill 16

And it was interesting walking around the neighborhood after our meals.

Midweek Meanderings – MAKE Cafe on the Move and Na Tart Coming to Clairemont.

Just a quick post for a very pleasant Wednesday.

Make Cafe on the Move?

So, I was doing a post on the last of the trio of places where we had Shakshuka with JJ. It was a shop we saw walking back to our car after having breakfast with JJ at Flora named Make Cafe. We walked over and took a look at the menu, which was quite interesting. When I got back home, I did a quick online search and found out that MAKE stands for "Merging Agriculture, Kitchens and Employment" and MAKE Projects " is a hyperlocal farm, cafe, and social enterprise that empowers refugee and immigrant women through food, agriculture, and community." The Cafe provides refugee women with job training and experience. You can read a wonderful article from San Diego Magazine here that also highlight's the programs founder Anchi Mei.

Anyway, we paid a visit to the cafe which was only open 4 days a week for brunch.

Make Cafe 01

Make Cafe 02

Loved the diversity of the menu and the food was quite good. The service was warm and friendly.

Anyway, as I was prepping this post early last week, I noticed that the Google had them listed as Temporarily Closed. So, I did some checking and yes, it seems that MAKE is on the move; from the location at 2920 University to Felton Street according to their website

Here's what we had.

Make Cafe 03

Make Cafe 04

According to their website; they hope to reopen in late 2025. I'm all for places like this…and yes, I've gone ahead and donated a bit.

Hope they are able to reopen by their projected date.

Na Tart Coming to Clairemont:

**** You can find a post on Na Tart here.

Did some quick shopping at the Aldi on Balboa, when I noticed this coming soon sign in the storefront next to Pho Hut & Grill.

IMG_8694

So, again I took to Google and it seems that this Egg Tart specialist based in Flushing, NYC is opening this shop in San Diego! I believe they are supposed to open in July!

I'm thinking this parking lot just got a bit tighter!

I hope everyone is having a great week!

Road Trip – Arcadia Farms Cafe (Scottsdale)

Upon waking in Scottsdale, we found that it was much cooler than the day before. So, after JJ had his breakfast and had a short "food coma break", we decided to take a stroll and maybe get us something to eat.

IMG_6812

We headed down East Main Street. Though all the shops were closed, we enjoyed wandering and enjoyed the public art.

IMG_6813

And of course the Missus could not pass up a photo-op…..

IMG_6814a

IMG_6818

As you cross North Scottsdale Road, the Galleries start giving way to a "Old West" look.

IMG_6819a

IMG_6820

We walked all the way down to the Civic Center; there's a pedestrian path/mall with shops and green spaces.

IMG_6832

And frankly, JJ seemed to be enjoying himself. He even found some new "paw-rents" that he threatened to leave with!

IMG_6830

That's actually the Winfield Scott Memorial who along with his wife Helen established a homestead in what is now Scottsdale in 1888. Interesting fact; Winfield Scott eventually moved to San Diego and is currently interred at Mount Hope Cemetery.

From here we decided to head on back and took East 1st Avenue back. In doing my research on dog friendly eateries; I came across Arcadia Farms Cafe. It looked promising, so we decided to stop by.

IMG_6846

The cafe also has a market across the street. They are open for breakfast-brunch-lunch daily. I poked my head in and was greeted and then we were seated in the quaint covered patio area.

IMG_6848

IMG_6852

The gal who Served us was lovely…she even brought a bowl of water for JJ! The items on the menu looked like it was French influenced and we decided to just get one breakfast to share. The Missus got a coffee and I got a fairly stiff Cold Brew.

IMG_6851

She also dropped off two Madeleines….a very nice touch. The Missus saved them for later.

IMG_6854

We asked the young lady for a recommendation; something not overly sweet and were surprised that she recommended the Gruyere and Parisian Ham Crepes ($20). She told us that the crepes weren't too sweet.

IMG_6858

Good lord, this was just drenched in rich Mornay Sauce, which basically overpowered everything. Yes, the crepes didn't seem sweet because you really couldn't taste it and same with the ham. Being saturated with the sauce, the crepes got mushy quickly. This was a bit much for us…..and somewhat typical of many "American-French" places that just go a bit overboard.

Well, at least we absolutely wouldn't need to have anything until dinner!

Arcadia Farms Cafe

Scottsdale, AZ 85251

We rolled back to our room, packed, and headed off to our next stop.

Now, if you recall in my previous post I noted that Scottsdale had gotten record heat on the day we arrived. Would you believe as we headed up the 87 past Payson we saw snow alongside the road! We decided to stop and give JJ his first "taste" of the white stuff!

IMG_8875

He was quite curious and entertained himself for a few minutes.

From here we headed to our next stop….along "Woof 66"…… to a very familiar place.

IMG_8878

Stay tuned for that one!

JJ wishes everyone a great weekend and "Blessings to All"!

Wildland and a Revisit to Sleeping Tiger Coffee (Carlsbad)

Between all our Road Trips, we’ve taking JJ out to “explore” a bit. On one fine morning, we decided to head up to Carlsbad. We had enjoyed Jeune Et Jolie so much, that when the team behind that restaurant opened a breakfast-brunch-bakery we really wanted to try it out. I had read that dogs were allowed on the patio area, so we decided to head on up.

We easily found parking on State Street and when we passed Wildland, it wasn’t very busy at all. So we took JJ on over for a walk thru the village and along Carlsbad Boulevard.

But first, we decided t get our caffeine fix at a familiar locale, Sleeping Tiger Coffee inside of Witch Creek Winery. The two tables fronting Carlsbad Boulevard were empty, so the Missus sat with J, while I went in and ordered us a Tanzanian Pour Over and a cold brew.

Witch Creek Rev 01

We find it interesting that Starbucks next door is quite busy, while there’s no one getting coffee here.

The Missus enjoys the pour0vers from here and the cold brew is pretty strong and wakes me up.

Witch Creek Rev 03

We sat and relaxed for a bit. We both think the coffee at Sleeping Tiger is much better than the Starbucks next door and wonder why folks aren’t supporting a local business with a superior (in our opinion) product.

Meanwhile; JJ was wondering where “All the witches” were?

Fortified by caffeine we took JJ on a nice stroll along Carlsbad Boulevard overlooking Carlsbad State Beach, finally turning back near lifeguard tower 35. Walking back thru Carlsbad Village and along State, we arrived back at Wildland, which was still not very busy, so we grabbed a table on the patio.

Wildland 01

I sat with JJ while the Missus went to peruse the menu.

Wildland 02

The Missus decided on the three item Smoked Fish Plate ($18). Meanwhile, my food friend “LL” recommended the Shakshuka ($20), and after a pretty “meh” version at Flora, I was interested in trying this one.

Wildland 04

Ordering is done at the counter; you’re given a number and your food is brought to you.

Wildland 03

The Smoked Fish Plate was quite good. We chose the Smoked Salmon, Olive Oil Poached Yellowtail, and the item that really made this for us; the Hot Smoked Pastrami Kampachi, which was full of smoky-peppery-herbaceous flavors.

Wildland 05

Loved the veggies, so fresh, the tomatoes sweetly-fruity-acidic; man, those cucumbers crisp and palate cleansing. The vegetables were excellent. The weak point of the dish was the bread, too chewy, with a hard crust.

As for the Shakshuka.

Wildland 06

I thought this was going to be herb overload, but the dill actually complemented the acidic tones of the dish and the celery leaves added a mild “grassiness” to the dish. It seems that the versions in San Diego use za’atar and leave out the cumin and harissa. The eggs were nice and runny, with a hint of smoky-savoriness.

Wildland 07

As with the smoked fish plate, the bread was the weak link here, being too chewy and the crust hard. Still, the dish was pretty good overall.

We did enjoy our time at Wildland and will make sure to return for that smoked fish plate and JJ enjoyed visiting Carlsbad.

Breakfast with JJ – Flora (North Park)

During one of our walks with JJ in North Park, we noticed that Truffle Neighborhood Cocina had been replaced by a restaurant named Flora. After doing a bit of research, I found that the place was dog friendly, so we decided to head on over for brunch one morning.

The outdoor area, while on busy University Avenue was separated from the sidewalk traffic by planters.

Flora 01

We were greeted and seated in the nice patio area. The folks working here are wonderful, they immediately brought JJ some water while delivering our menus. He got served before us! Like I said; there's a difference between "Dog Allowed" and "Dog Friendly". Flora is definitely in the latter as the Servers came out to meet and greet JJ.

Flora 02

Flora 03

I think I've been out of touch with regards to breakfasts and brunch. There was Shashuka on the menu; one of my favorite dishes. We'd end up having Shakshuka three times in two weeks! When did that become mainstream?

The Missus got the Avocado Toast ($18), which came topped with poached eggs (a bit overcooked) and a pile of arugula.

Flora 04

Taking a closer look we noticed that the mashed avocado (the Missus prefers slices) was turning a bit brown. The highlight of the dish for the Missus was the sourdough which was toasted to crisp perfection.

Of course I got the Shakshuka ($17). The menu said the eggs were "sunny side up", but these seemed to be have been just cracked into the tomato-bell pepper sauce right before serving.

Flora 05  Flora 06 The toasts were again really good. The tomato-bell pepper compote was over processed and runny; I prefer something more rustic and thicker. It also lacked the seasoning I like; cumin, smoky tones, harissa, herbaceous flavors, and garlic. This had a decent acidity, though I'm not quite sure about feta cheese in my shakshuka. I really wasn't expecting anything close to what we had in Tunisia or Jerusalem, and I tend toward Tunisian style Shakshuka when I make the dish at home. But this was just mediocre to me.

Of the three versions we had; this was my least favorite. We were told that they use sourdough from Bread and Cie and also that the ownership is the same as when the place was Truffle Neighborhood Cocina. The Missus told me the interior of the restaurant is quite nice; but I didn't have a chance to check it out. And to be completely honest; I'm more about food than the "vibe".

We enjoyed the service and JJ had a nice visit to the park afterward as payment for being a "good boi" while we ate.

Breakfast with JJ – Parkhouse Eatery

We like taking JJ out to "explore". The new smells, sounds, and sights! And then we'd grab a bite to eat at a dog friendly place. I'm not sure if it's just me; but there seem to be many more dog friendly places post-pandemic. JJ seems to really enjoy Trolley Barn Park, which I've posted on before, and strolling along Adams Avenue. So, one morning, the Missus and I thought we'd take him for a walk, then have breakfast at Parkhouse Eatery. It had been over 20 years since we'd eaten there!

Parkhouse JJ 01

Once arriving we were pointed to a table and we had a seat.

The place looked so familiar, but one thing that had truly changed since we last visited were the prices!

Parkhouse JJ 02

Up until JJ came along we really weren't big breakfast-brunch folks, so the prices really caught us a bit off guard!

The gentleman waiting upon us was professional; the Missus got a latte and I got an Americano to start.

Parkhouse JJ 03b

The Missus got the Avocado Toast with 2 eggs and bacon. ($10.75 + $4.40)

Parkhouse JJ 04

The Missus didn't care for the bread as it wasn't quite toasted to Her preference. She did enjoy the basil; which was a nice addition to the fresh avocado. The eggs were nice and runny, though the bacon was on the chewy side.

I got the Carnitas Stuffed Roasted Polenta Cake ($19.50).

Parkhouse JJ 05  Parkhouse JJ 06 The eggs were again nice and runny; no oof flavors. The polenta cake nice and crisp, good mild corn flavor. The carnitas a bit on the mild side in terms of flavor and also slightly stringy and dry, but not bad. The Mozzarella was fine, though the tomato added some good acidity to the dish. The "salsa" was also on the milder side in terms of spice and acidity. Still, this was not bad.

This was a decent breakfast and the Missus now wants basil on Her Avocado Toast! And JJ entertained himself by noodling with the pebbles.

Parkhouse JJ 07
Parkhouse JJ 08 And we learned something from our meals with JJ. There's a definite difference in "Dog Friendly" versus "Dogs Allowed". This was simply dogs allowed. They are just ignored by the staff. Perfectly fine with us. It's been interesting finding places to dine with JJ!

Cambria – Redwood Cafe

We made it to Cambria from Morro Bay/Cayucos in record time! It was much too early to check in so we headed to the "East Village" where we had enjoyed the shopping on our previous visits.

IMG_5239

IMG_5241a

Most of the shops were obviously dog friendly.

IMG_5243

And if I wasn't sure, I'd let the Missus enter and wait with JJ outside. And more often then naught, I'd be waved on in.

IMG_5240

The Missus really enjoys shopping and browsing in Cambria.

I think that Cinnabar is one of our favorite shopping stops here.

IMG_5254

IMG_5259

Soon enough, it was time for an early lunch. After checking out a couple of places, we thought that the Redwood Cafe, located in the lot where we had parked our car seemed to have a nice outdoor dining area.

IMG_5251

We waked over and were told to go ahead and pick a table; which we did.

IMG_5244

The service was very…shall we say "relaxed" and things happened at a slower pace; not a bad things since we were on holiday and didn't know when our room would be ready.

The Missus got the special of the day; Chilaquiles. The eggs were nice and runny. The beans were very…ummmm…"gringo" and pasty.

IMG_5248a

The chips were nicely drenched in a red sauce; which was super sour and puckery.

I got a bowl of the Cilantro Chicken Soup.

IMG_5249

Lots of tomato and celery. Also super sour! We ended up asking for some hot sauce and once we added some Tapatio to our dishes, things evened out a bit. I could then actually taste some chicken flavor.

Well, it was a nice day, the weather so pleasant and JJ enjoyed hanging out in the shade.

Redwood Cafe
2094 Main St.
Cambria, CA 93428

In fact, JJ kinda enjoyed the "hocus pocus" of Cambria!

IMG_8646

And just as we were paying for our meal, I got a text that our room was ready! Nice! We'd be able to check in a couple of hours early and squeeze in a nap!

Dos Palmas Cafe

During our visits to Bica, we noticed this rather low-keyed shop across the street.

Dos Palmas 01

It seemed to be doing some rather steady business. So, after our coffee and sandwich, we took JJ on a walk all the way to Kensington and then back over to this shop.

Dos Palmas 02

We took a look at the menu and a gentleman was walking out with a package. We had noticed that folks in this area and Kensington seemed to be rather friendly, greeting us as we passed, some coming over to pet JJ. The gentleman said "you'll like this place; I drop by four or five times a week!"

So, we took a look at the menu.

Dos Palmas 03

Which we put in the category of a neighborhood coffee and sandwich shop. And there seemed to be a cute little patio in the back.

Dos Palmas 04

We also noted that the place opens at 7am, so we made a note to return when we took JJ "exploring" which was a few days later.

Dos Palmas Cafe is a cozy little shop, there was only one woman working when we arrived. The Missus ordered a Pour Over, I got an Americano and we also got two sandwiches and proceeded to take JJ to the quaint back patio.

Dos Palmas 05

Dos Palmas 06

I expected things to take a while since it was just one person working but our Avocado Toast ($10.75) with Bacon (+$2) and Truffle Grilled Cheese ($11.50) was ready fairly quickly.

Dos Palmas 07

There was a generous amount of tender, buttery avocado on the nicely toasted bread.

Dos Palmas 08

The bacon, which added that salty component could have been a bit more crisp, but was fine.

My Truffle Grilled Cheese was nicely toasted.

Dos Palmas 09 Dos Palmas 10   Though I really couldn't make out truffle. This was bit too much for me in terms of cheese….yes, I know, it's a grilled cheese, but this really needed more than rich-milkiness. The tomatoes weren't ripe enough to add the sweet acidity to help cut the richness and there wasn't enough onion to add pungency. If you just want gooey cheese-land, this might work for you.

The Missus didn't care for Her pour-over, but I thought my Americano was fine. We did like the patio, the woman working was so nice, and of course, JJ enjoyed himself.

Dos Palmas 10b

So, we decided to return. We'd take JJ for a nice walk in the neighborhood, do some shopping at Stehly Farms, the Missus would pick up a Cortado from Bica and I'd get my coffee and order a sandwich from Dos Palmas.

Dos Palmas 11

This time I went with the Turkey Pesto ($12.75).

Dos Palmas 13  Dos Palmas 14 This was a pretty good sandwich; nothing fancy mind you, the turkey was totally Sysco stuff; but the bread was nicely toasted and held out well. The herbaceous-savory-nutty pesto, the sweetness of the roasted red peppers, the bitterness of the greens, the creamy, slightly sweet avocado all worked well together. And this was enough for both the Missus and I for a light brunch. I think we'll go ahead and add the bacon for an upcharge next time.

I've mentioned "threads in the fabric of a neighborhood" in previous posts; you know, the corner bakery, coffee shop, and yes, the neighborhood sandwich purveyor. I think we just found this area's "sandwich – coffee shop".

Dos Palmas 17

Decent prices, decent food…..

And it seems that JJ was "praying" for more treats here…..

Cinque Terre – Castello Doria (Vernazza), Corniglia, and CaffÚ Matteo (Corniglia)

It was our third full day in the Cinque Terre, but it for some reason, it felt like we'd been here for a while. We kept running into a very friendly Aussie couple, like 2-3 times a day. They were staying in a flat we could see from our window with a patio overlooking the sea. We'd see them having wine every evening. We gotta stay there next time!

By now, our morning coffee routine was a visit to Ananasso Bar.

IMG_2913

IMG_2914

Where the views from one of the tables overlooking the harbor is wonderful.

IMG_2919

The wind and the rain from the night before had made for fairly clear skies and the winter air was crisp.

This seemed like a perfect time to visit Castello Doria (Doria Castle) and the tower of the ruins which stands on the edge of a ridge overlooking the village and the sea. Of course, there were a good number of stairs to climb!

IMG_2921

The views from the tower are fantastic; especially on a clear day like this was.

IMG_2922

IMG_2923

From one side you could see the south shoreline.

IMG_2927

From the other the North.

IMG_2929

And of course a postcard view of Vernazza below.

IMG_2934

While admiring the views, the Missus and I discussed our plans for the day. Well, it ended up being pretty easy; we'd been to four of the five villages f the Cinque Terre. There was just one left, Corniglia. We decided we needed to complete the "set".

So, it was back to the apartment to get our stuffs….yes, more stairs…..

IMG_2937

IMG_2938

On the way up to the train station, we decided to take a peek at the tiny chapel on the main street, Via Roma.

IMG_2940

This lovely little temple is the Chapel of Santa Marta.

IMG_2940b

And then we were off to Corniglia; the train there takes only 4 minutes! Corniglia has the distinction of being the only one of the five villages not on the ocean; instead it is perched on a hill above the water. Though the train station is at the bottom of the hill.

IMG_2941a

So, to get up to this village of 150, you need to catch the shuttle……or…..

IMG_2941b

Yep, you guessed it; take the stairs, all 382 of them! Guess which option the Missus picked?

IMG_2941c

No, I didn't count them. It actually wasn't too bad because they were nicely maintained and quite even.

IMG_2941d

IMG_2943

Once near the top, you simply walk thru some narrow streets and end up where the shuttle buses actually stop.

IMG_2945

IMG_2946a

We strolled along Via Stazione into the charming little village. And ended up at a lovely little square in front of a church.

IMG_2948a

IMG_2947

This is the lovely Chiesa Di San Pietro.

IMG_2950

IMG_2952

Which was built way back in 1334!

IMG_2953

While enjoying the white marble interior, we quickly noticed a pooch walking thru the church. The dog had a harness on and we thought he was with the nice gentleman and his son. However, when they left the church, the pup did not!

IMG_2957

He just hung around and greeted people.

And when folks started coming in for what appeared to be services, he took his leave! Such a well mannered pooch!

IMG_2958

You'd weave your way between buildings.

IMG_2959

And then suddenly find yourself on the edge with a view.

IMG_2960

Crossing over we entered what looked like the "downtown" of Corniglia, there were some cafes and restaurants and a nice little square. And an interesting chapel.

IMG_2963

With an even more interesting…and kinda gory statue in the front.

IMG_2964

Later on, I did a search in Google maps and found that this is the Cappella dei Flagellati Corniglia, the "Chapel of the Flagellants". Which explains the statue; because you know what Flagellants are, right?

IMG_2966

It's quite a lovely area.

IMG_2969

Following the instructions of Rick Steves Cinque Terre guide we walked down the little street named Via Fieschi.

IMG_2970
Which led us to a lovely terrace known as Santa Maria Belvedere, which had beautiful 180 degree views of the Ligurian Coast.

IMG_2971

IMG_2974

IMG_2975

Corniglia was so chill!

We decided to get a very light brunch and some espresso and headed back to the square, Largo Taragio. Where the CaffÚ Matteo was doing some good business! This was the most folks we saw in Corniglia.

And they had a bunch of breakfast deals going.

The Missus got a croissant and coffee for 3 Euros; I got the croissant, coffee, and OJ for 5 Euros. The prices were indeed quite fair; even though the croissant, as expected was not very good.

The exterior hard, the interior too brady and doughy, not enough butter…but of course, we expected that.

Between the carbs and the coffee; well, that was enough to keep us until later in the day.

And at 8 Euros for two?

And carbs were good, because well, remember those 382 steps???

I also loved this sign that was in the cafe…..

As the Missus and I waited for the train; we made a decision on where we'd be going to next….since we'd been to all five villages in the Cinque Terre; we thought we'd visit one to the North where the local train ended.
