Road Trip (During Covid-19) – The Black Sheep (Santa Barbara)

I spent a good month planning our road trip….the dates; not only was the Missus and I burnt out from work, but also from all the toxic politics and hate being spewed. I knew it was going to boil over during election week. Since I had already voted by mail, we decided to leave on the Sunday right after Halloween. I had basically planned out all the dinners….we really don't eat lunch….just having croissants, fruits, nuts, and bars when travelling. We save our calories for dinner. I had decided to stop overnight in Santa Barbara, where we could pick-up wonderful looking bentos from our favorite restaurant on our previous visit to the city and eat on the patio of the motel we were staying in. Unfortunately, a week before our trip Yoichi's decided to stop take-out service and prepare to reopen for dining in and were going to be closed until further notice. I immediately did a bunch of research and picked out a couple of places and let the Missus decide. Which she did and I made reservations for an outdoor table at the earliest time available.

It was a wonderful morning when we left San Diego.

We got to Santa Barbara in record time and arrived early. Our motel was on State Street, but not on the portion to the South that was now a pedestrian only zone. I basically chose the place because of the location and this was the only stop where I actually went in and wiped down the room before we settled in.

Getting to SB early meant that we had time to kill, so we headed down State Street. The Trinity Episcopal Church was having services (this was a Sunday) when we passed…..outdoors.

And it was a pleasant walk as we passed very few people….everyone wearing a mask, along the way.

And State Street was closed from Sola Street to Haley Street, creating a pedestrian zone with outdoor dining areas created.

And with very few people, being able to walk in the street, really enabled one to distance.

I got a kick from the Earth without Art is just "EH" sign and also took note of the business below that sign.

After checking to see where we'd be eating that evening…..to also scope out the outdoor situation we headed back to the motel; we always include a medium sized ice chest when we do road trips and I grabbed some sparkling water, almonds, and an energy bar. We ate on the empty elevated patio of the motel and when we finished, our room was ready.

We freshened up and took a short nap.

We headed down to our dinner destination.

The place the Missus chose for dinner was the Black Sheep….She was fascinated by the rather eclectic menu and the cocktail list.

And got to chose our little table outside in the covered garage like area. Where we saw an amazing sunset……

IMG_7971 IMG_7145Our Server was wonderful, very warm, friendly, gracious. While there were several "hiccups" with our meal, we really enjoyed our experience as a whole.

The menu had quite a collection of dishes; from Potato Tacos to Ramen to Duck Confit….I was quite surprised that the Missus had chosen this place.

We decided on what we were going to order and then took a look at the cocktail list….which, unfortunately only had 4-5 drinks on it. A far cry from the online cocktail menu. When we asked what was going on with this we were told that they just lost their mixologist….sad, there's nothing to be done about that, so we went off that list.

I decided on the Yuzu Margarita.

Which, while being a light on the Tequila and Triple-sec, was nice and refreshing. The Missus got the Black Sheep Manhattan which was passable, but could have used a large sized cocktail ice cube or two.

The first dish out was the Australian Wagyu Beef Carpaccio….we laughed when we were told it was "A7 Wagyu" and instantly knew it wasn't Japanese Wagyu.

The dish supposedly had uni and dashi; but we didn't see any on the plate. The beef was very good however; clean tasting, no hints of metallic-off flavors, the basil oil was wonderful and the Missus loved the potato puree

The Missus also really enjoyed the Bone Marrow Bruschetta.

This was wonderful play of textures, from the buttery, very beefy bone marrow, the panko, perfectly toasted baguette. The port sauce wasn't overly sweet….it was closer to a veal jus, the mustard greens added a pleasant bitterness, and the pear a pleasant tart-sweetness.

The potato tacos weren't bad either.

This version used a wonderfully dense, slightly sweeter-nutty purple potatoes, which was really highlited when combined with the pickled onions and tangy crema. Call it hipster tacos if you will; but this wasn't too bad.

While munching on the tacos and bruschetta, we asked the Server about the Uni and Dashi on the carpaccio…..he kindly asked us to hold on for a second while he checked with the kitchen.  About ten minutes later he came back out with the chef who had a bowl in hand. Apparently, they'd forgotten the uni and dashi on our carpaccio and decided to give us a special dish using the wagyu beef, uni, and dashi.

Along with the sweet-spice from the sliced chilies; this was really good. In fact, the Missus and I think that had the uni and dashi been used with the carpaccio; it might have just been too much, clashing flavors. Here there was a nice oceany-beefy cleanness to the dish. Kudos to the staff for making things right.

At this point the Server told us he'd bring us our check….but…..we had also ordered the Boqorones. Which they'd kind of let slip. A few minutes later; things were corrected.

Perhaps we had pushed our luck a bit on this one….having had Boquerones in Spain and Portugal…this was a bit too "fishy" for the Missus and the crostini was too hard.

IMG_7160 IMG_7140Regardless, in spite of the hiccups, we really loved the service, and the folks here were very warm and kind…..perhaps it had been so long since we'd actually had a meal out (232 days)? But I think not. We really did enjoy our experience and the carpaccio (both ways!) and the bruschetta were delicious.

Where In the World Were We?

Roaming range 11102020Does the map to the right look familiar? Yes, it's my "roaming range" which I've used in a couple of posts since the pandemic started. And as of March 246th (November 1st most years) it was as far as I'd gone since March 15th, the last time I ventured beyond those boundaries….232 days. For us, we who travel several times a year, having to cancel three trips sure took a toll on us. You could say that pandemic fatigue was setting in. The Missus kept complaining that we hadn't gone anywhere this year, even though we had gone to San Francisco in January and then Mexico City in February, it just seemed so long ago to Her. It was time…..we both needed some time off…..but stewing in our juices at home would just make things worse. So, we made a decision. To take a road trip. We'd play it safe, do things outdoors, stay at a variety of places, eat outdoors, with the option to "pull the plug" anytime we felt uncomfortable.

Well, where in the world were we? Not very far….though I got to visit a couple of places I'd had on my list…..it always seemed so close, that we'd always "put it off until later". I guess it was time.

We started in a familiar spot. Though on this occasion the always busy main drag of the city was now blocked off, made into a pedestrian only zone, with outdoor seating areas for eateries and coffee shops set-up.

We only spent an evening. And while my dinner plans fell through a couple of days before the trip; we did find a nice place with outdoor seating for dinner.

The next morning, after grabbing some coffee, we headed out, making a stop to see something that I had on "my list"….though strangely, the Missus had never heard of the place.

We had a fun little short break as this quaint little beach town was empty.

We also made another stop at a charming, tiny little village along the way.

We spent two evenings at our next destination. We enjoyed doing some walking along the beach front boardwalk and also "hiking" (the Missus said it wasn't "a hike" but merely a walk)  along a couple of trails along the way.

It was all capped off with a beautiful sunset on our second evening.

We had one wonderful and one ok meal here.

We were charmed by this village of 6,000 and the Missus now has the place on Her "revisit" list.

We got to check out some Elephant Seals along the way to our next stop.

Our next stop was two nights in another seaside town. We loved the architecture and even did our own little architectural walking tour.

And on our full day in the town we walked along the seaside trail all the way to the neighboring city. Needless to say; it was a beautiful walk.

On our first evening, we got to pay respects to our good friend, the late Ed from Yuma by eating at one of his favorite spots.

And on the second evening, we had a wonderful meal….so here's another place on the Missus's "return to" list.

We actually stayed on the top floor of a Victorian Mansion – the entire set-up was contact free….we saw no one during our entire stay. And right down the street was an Art Store….closed, but with two cats that liked to sleep and hang out in the window.

The next day we were in another neighboring city, with reservations at a Michelin Starred restaurant that really delivered the goods. In fact, the Missus claims that this meal might be the best She's had in the US.

We also took a bit of time to visit a beautiful Mission.

Our final stop was another city the Missus wants to return to. Our main reason for visiting was to see a "field of light"……..58,000 solar power lights, blooming over 15 acres.

Clearing Out the Memory Card – Never Made the Cut Road Trip Edition

Here are some photos that I was just going to delete…..I have a bunch of breakfast one's from when I was driving to Irvine almost weekly as well. But since these weren't in San Diego; where I try to visit places more than once; I thought I'd just do one of those "never made the cut" posts.

I went to lunch with the folks I was working with in Irvine a couple of times.

The Missus was seriously psyched to try the place that had been declared the "best Sichuan Restaurant in America". We were quite disappointed.

And the service was so terrible, that we got our mapo tofu and Shui Zhu Niu Rou, the beef boiled in hot sauce to go. Both just didn't have enough spice and were seriously defatted versions. The won tons in hot sauce were too sweet and lacked spice, not even close to the version I had at Long Chau Shou (龙抄手).

Santa Barbara – Stearns Wharf and Lunch at Barbareño

We had driven up to Santa Barbara to relax and enjoy ourselves. It was a bit on the warm side when we visited, but we had really enjoyed the previous afternoon and especially dinner at Yoichi's. On this day; well, I made dinner reservations, but not much else. We woke and decided to drive down to Stearns Wharf; tourist central. But during this time of the morning, it was so peaceful.

Looking around; it's obvious why visitors love the wharf; built in 1872, it was at that time the longest wharf south of San Francisco and North of San Pedro. And the views are lovely.

A lovely visit on a relaxed morning……

We decided to drive around a bit and visited the Santa Barbara Public Market, Gelsons, and Whole Foods. Not very inspiring, but it was a nice way to kill time.

When lunch came around, we parked at where we were staying and decided to walk down to a place on my list, Barbareño. Which was a rather hot and sweaty one mile walk down De La Vina Street. The place only served lunch in the outdoor area, with a limited menu.

Our Server, who was obviously a college student was very friendly, efficient, and really knew the menu. I'm not sure if it's because of the clientele, but the staff at restaurants in SB, really knew their stuff.

I ordered a Tri-Tip sandwich, Brussel sprouts, and "Animal Potatoes" for the Missus and I. I happened to mention that we'd be sharing the sandwich. And when it arrived, we were pleasantly surprised to see that they had split it for us!

IMG_6702 IMG_6704This was a perfectly serviceable tri-tip, moist and decently tender, good smokiness, with a pico de gallo type relish and good amount of cilantro. A nice yeasty roll and this was quite good. Don't get me wrong, this ain't Firestone Grill, but it was enough.

It came with a arugula salad.

The Brussel sprouts looked good, but were on the mushy side and a bit too sweet for us. The Missus really enjoyed the Animal Potatoes, the cheddar cheese added a nice saltiness, the caramelized onions a decent sweetness, and the Thousand Island Dressing……not the Missus's favorite, but I enjoyed the creamy-richness it added. The potatoes were nicely crisp on the exterior; though a bit hard in texture.

I don't think Barbareño is serving lunch anymore….too bad, because this was rather nice.

Roadtrip – The Bear and Star (Los Olivos)

We had a fun time stopping in Solvang and doing olive oil tastings. But it was lunchtime and both of us were getting hungry. I had several places on my "list"; Sides Hardware, Los Olivos Wine Merchant….but it was the menu at The Bear and Star, a rather newish place in the Fess Parker (remember him?) Inn that got us to walk in.

The place was rather full and at first we didn't think they'd have a table for us, but we were seated on the back porch area. It was nice and quiet.

The menu screamed "New American" and in typical fashion we ordered four appetizers for our meal. We really enjoy touring a menu via appetizers, something we really started doing about five years ago. Our Server was so nice and accommodating. She even took time to really describe every dish for the Missus.

First up; the Chicken Liver Mousse ($9). This version was whipped to a very creamy and light texture.

It was bit on the sweet side for us and just pouring the marmalade into the ramekin didn't help things as we'd have preferred to have it on the side. Still, very nice, light offal flavors, if a bit too sweet. I enjoyed the toast as it was crisp and overly hard.

The Missus just can't help Herself when it comes to Devilled Eggs. We ordered two of the Smoked Guajillo ($3) and two of the Bacon ($3).

This was nice; very solid versions of devilled eggs. I enjoyed the smokey flavors of the guajillo version while the Missus enjoyed the more classic bacon flavored ones.

The Missus's favorite item was the deceptively simple Crispy Ranch Squash ($9).

Glazed with a soy-sweet chili sauce that wasn't too salty nor too sweet; the condensed flavors of the different squashes came through. There were a couple of slices that were really outstanding. Our cheerful Server told the Missus those were slices of Mother Hibbard Squash that cam from the vineyard's garden. Surprisingly good.

I thought the Smoked Wagyu Carpaccio ($17) sounded interesting. I will say, it was "different".

It was quite the presentation. The meat seemed to be cold smoked; the texture a bit fibrous and grainy. The smoked flavor on the mild side. The mushrooms were strange as it seemed to be dried and was like eating cardboard. This actually needed more salt….something we rarely say. Kind of a strange dish for us.

Overall, we enjoyed our meal, we'd gladly revisit. We really enjoyed our Server who was friendly, knowledgeable, and very efficient. Bear and Star 07

Road Trip: Solvang and Los Olivos – Olive Oil, Markets, and Birkholm’s Bakery

I mentioned that back in October, the Missus and I took a roadtrip to Santa Barbara. Here are a couple of stops along the way.

I think we really developed our love for Olive Oil during our visit to Crete all those years ago. We both enjoyed our visit to the Peza Union Museum and Tasting Room. Since then, we've always had at least 3-4 bottles of Olive Oil; different grades, for different purposes. These days, it's what we've tasted in Spain, the peppery-grassy olive oils we find fascinating. And while there are places here in San Diego to grab a bottle or two. I thought it would be nice to stop and have a few tasting in Los Olivos along the way.

But first, I needed to grab something for the folks in the office. The last time I was in the area, we got a bucket of cookies from Birkholm's Bakery. Man, that stuff was gone in less than a day!

Since Solvang is pretty much on the way; we decided to make a stop, get those cookies, and stretch our legs a bit.

Next stop; Global Gardens. This little stand was fairly small and discreet. We chatted with the young lady who was amazingly knowledgeable. We decided on doing the tasting; she wasn't very pushy and we actually only paid for a single tasting. She directed the products tasted to our preferences and could speak to everything we tried.

Some of the blends and styles here are excellent….so good that we spent over $70 on two bottles of olive oil.

A short drive later; we arrived in downtown Los Olivos. It's a quaint little town, everything seems centered around 4-5 blocks. We were surprised that the place seemed quite busy.

We had stopped for lunch, but we decided to just do some browsing. This is wine country and there are over 30 tasting rooms in the area. Though, we decided to stop here.

We took a look at the rather large variety of olive oils available and I chatted with the very nice guy behind the counter…..

IMG_2043 IMG_2042We mentioned different flavors; we were looking for something neutral, but still with personality, and he nicely gave us some samples….I offered to pay for the tasting, but he said "no problem". We ended up buying three bottles. Two as gifts; one for us.

Santa Barbara Roadtrip – Dinner at Yoichi’s, Mission Santa Barbara, and Staying at the “Secret Garden”

Things have been really busy for both the Missus and I. Before my next "big push", I felt we both needed a break, just a long weekend kind of thing. So when the Missus needed to go to our old neighborhood for an appointment, I saw the perfect chance. The Missus suggested Santa Barbara. I've passed through many times and had been to places like Solvang; I'd never stopped in Santa Barbara so I was up for it. A alsos knew we'd both be spending a good deal of time sleeping when we weren't eating or walking about.

I'm doing this post a bit out of chronological order, I hope you don't mind.

We got into Santa Barbara a bit early after leaving Hacienda Heights fairly early in the morning, along with stops in Solvang and Los Olivos (a future post). We couldn't check in yet and were staying fairly close to the 101 near East Mission Street, so we decided to check out the Mission Santa Barbara to kill some time.

It was a bright, albeit pretty darn warm day.

Founded by the Franciscan order in 1786, Sunday mass is still held in the very distinctive chapel to this day.

And on this very sunny Saturday, there was a wedding ceremony taking place in the main chapel.

We peeked in and were going to turn around and head out; but one of the really nice Filipino Women manning the doors waved us in.

After spending a short while in the chapel we headed out and down the block.

Across the street is Mission Historical Park; where another wedding, albeit a much more casual affair (check out the dog….looks like part of the wedding party), was taking place.

By now, enough time had passed and we could check-in. We wanted a bit of peace and quiet, time to relax, and decided on the Secret Garden Inn & Cottages; located on Bath Street. While a pretty good walk from much of SB, we both enjoyed the prospect of staying in a cottage.

We were greeted by Cat of the House, who roamed the yard during the day and hung out inside at night.

Our cottage was named the Wood Thrush and even had a Jacuzzi; though it was much too hot for that during our stay.

It was very cozy and comfortable, even though we made that A/C unit work overtime.

There was breakfast every morning, during the evening, after 7pm, there was hot cider and brownies, which the Missus enjoyed. On Friday and Saturday evenings, cheese and wine.

Chilled filtered water was provided, you had the combination to get into the main house where there were an additional two rooms and grab some water, tea, hot water.

You could eat breakfast or have evening tea at one of the tables…..

For us, the main attraction was the peace and quiet in this more residential neighborhood. I must've slept sixteen hours during our only full day in Santa Barbara.

The owner, Dominique, who is from France is a hoot, quite funny, and very thoughtful as well. Not cheap, but worth it if you want to get away…..

I'd made reservations for dinner on both of the nights we'd be in Santa Barbara. On this night, we had reservations at a Yoichi's. The restaurant had gotten my attention because it did Kaiseki, something that seemed so out of place in Santa Barbara.

The rather discreet restaurant resides a few blocks east of State Street, on East Victoria. There are but a dozen or so tables in the Spartan interior. The woman running the front of house, who I believe is the Chef's wife was amazing, so gracious, the timing of the dishes were perfect.

On weekends, the only option is the $100 per head Kaiseki, which seemed like a bargain to us. This version, unlike the traditional Kaiseki at places like, say, Suzunari in Tokyo, is shorter, makes some modifications, but also gives the customer choices for several of the courses.

Yoichis 02 Yoichis 03There was of course, the issue of what to drink. There was a tight list of sake, wine (several from Japan), and beer. After explaining our preference to our Server, she selected the Mizubasho Daiginjo Junmai. The bright and clean flavor, with the slightly fruity nose, was just perfect for our meal.

Things started with the Zensai course.

Yoichis 04 Yoichis 05This just set the stage for our meal and as a wonderful start; from the refreshing, slightly slimy Jyunsai (Water Shield), which really got our palates refreshed and ready for our meal. It was the perfect start for us.

Next up was the perfectly tender satoimo and even more important, something I'd worried about the Missus enjoying; Ayu (Sweetfish).

But I should have known better since She really enjoyed all the variations of preserved fish in Kanazawa earlier in the year. This version was just perfect, slight sweetness, nice soy sauce flavor, crunchy eggs, quite firm, with a great mouthfeel. A slight fruitiness combined with a mildly bitter finish.

The Sunomono was very interesting, as the tako and the abalone were good, though routine.

The items that really got our attention was the Kyuri Asa-zuke, which was perfectly pickled, not too sour, not too salty, with a perfect crunch; the daikon still had a nice bit of pungency to balance out the sour and the slight sweetness, and a lovely piece of jellyfish, so perfectly prepared. Our least favorite item was the Hokkaido Scallop. The miso really overpowered the flavor of the scallop.

Two items were offered for the "Owan", the soup course.

The Missus chose the version with Unagi.

First off, the dashi was perfectly balanced, very clean tasting, and for us, the star of the soup course. The unagi melted in your mouth.

I selected the version with the clam fishcake.

The fishcake had just the perfect texture, soft and not rubbery in the least. The "hamaguri", simple saltwater clam, in the center of the fishcake was nicely prepared and very tender. And the masutake mushroom added a nice earthiness to the soup.

The sashimi course, the Mukōzuke was next; three different fishes; two cuts of each.

Yoichis 10 Yoichis 11The Hirame (halibut) was excellent, nice firmness, with a hint of sweetness, that piece of engawa (dorsal fin muscle) was so very nice. The Missus didn't care for the Katsuo; but I found the lean firmness very pleasant. We were told that the Bluefin Tuna came from Spain; we found the maguro loin to have a slight metallicness that wasn't too pleasant. That slice of toro though….just melted in your mouth.

Grilled dishes (yakimono) were next. The Missus, well, of course She got the Gindara (Black Cod)

Buttery, it was quite good, perhaps not the best we've ever had, but very tender, not overly salty, perfectly cooked.

The only clunker of the night was the Kamo (Duck) Yuanyaki. Sound familiar? Yes, it's something I make at home, so expectations were high. Unfortunately, this wasn't up to par in our minds.

The duck was overcooked and tough, it was also very salty. Love the pink peppercorns and all, but this was our least favorite dish of the night.

Next up were the steamed dishes and the Missus just loved Her, ahem "Kinki" (Rock Fish). She's been wanting this since we last had it at Suzunari this past spring (I know, I'm behind on posts). And this version served using the classic nitsuke (sweet soy) preparation was fantastic.

The fish was so buttery, the fat just under the skin was amazing. The flavors reminded the Missus of Chinese preparations and She really, really, wanted some rice. I'm thinking this fish hasn't taken off because of the amount of bones; a bit of work, but man is it worth it! When the dish was brought over, the nice woman asked the Missus if She could manage the bones in the dish. When the Missus said "yes", she smiled and said, "yes, most Asians know how to eat fish with bones….." Fantastic dish.

I got the buta no kakuni.

I loved the texture of the pork, not falling to pieces, but still very tender. The broth was very good; light, very balanced, I detected a hint of miso; neither too salty, nor too sweet, I actually drank it all. And like the Missus, I wanted some rice with this!

Well, we got our rice with the second to last course….instead of the usual "Gohan" (Rice) dish, Yoichi's does nigiri. Tonight, two of the three pieces were predetermined; amaebi (sweet shrimp), and salmon belly. The wildcard offerings were Santa Barbara Uni and Negi Toro, so we got one of each.

Considering that the Chef; Yoichi Kawabata once worked at Nobu Tokyo, we expected well made nigiri, which is what we got. The shari was very neutral in flavor and not to tight. The amaebi was sweet with a nice texture; the salmon belly was bright and fresh, though not as rich and tender as I enjoy. Santa Barbara Uni has it's own specific flavor, creamy and sweet, not as oceany as Hokkaido Uni or meaty as San Diego Uni. This was a perfect specimen. The negi toro, was mostly toro and we weren't complaining.

Dessert in these type of restaurants is usually anti-climatic and it is no different here.

Overall, this was a wonderful meal. In fact, we enjoyed it much more than Wakuriya which has a Michelin Star. We loved the pacing, the gracious and warm service. In fact, near the end of our meal, a couple walked in, obviously back packers, shorts, sneakers, backpacks…….apparently, they were looking for some "Japanese food and sushi" and read about this place on that four-lettered site. The Server kindly went over the menu and type of food served here with them. When they looked confused she asked them what they wanted…….rolls and such. She very kindly gave them the names a few places down State Street that would fill the bill.

Yoichis 20 Yoichis 21In the end, Yoichi's had us missing Japan, which, in this case was a good thing. I think we'll be back…maybe just for a quick overnight stay just to eat here again.

Sometimes you find a place that just fits your temperament. I think Yoichi's might be that place for us.

Roadtrip: Solvang Stop – El Rancho Market and Birkholm’s Bakery

We left Hacienda Heights at 530 am, thinking that'd we'd avoid all traffic, even on a weekday….at least that's how things used to be when we lived here. I had an account in Hollywood and made a deal to come in early; leaving at about 515 so I could leave early, heck, even hit up the Zankou location in Hollywood and make it home in time! Times sure have changed….there's was a good deal of traffic at 530am on the 60 West, then on the 101. Once we got past Hollywood things got a bit better, then really cleared out until we hit Santa Barbara. Of course, it was prime time traffic by then. We'd decided on heading up this way, stopping along the drive, at places like Solvang. Right outside Solvang was our first stop…..we love markets, so dropping by El Rancho was a must…..

El Rancho Mkt 01bWe loved El Rancho; good variety, the Missus got to add to Her apple collection. Prices that were reasonable, you could leave without feeling mugged. You could get local product, or if not, just to do your everyday shopping. We Also got some some organic treats for Da' Boyz….the Missus was tempted to grind Her own flour from wheat at the kiosk……

Loved the sign to the right….which was actually in the restroom!

We enjoyed this as a nice little stop along the way. I thinknthey'd be great if you wanted to pick up prepared foods for a little picnic as well.

After getting nice and "caffiened up" we headed into Solvang. We'd been to Solvang a couple of times and had never really enjoyed ourselves….too crowded, too kitschy, it just gave off that tourist trap vibe….. This time though, on a weekday morning in winter; the place seemed so charming.

 It was just the perfect time for us, the half timbered structures, the quiet streets….the temperatures in the low thirties….even the locals we met were telling us how cold it was!

We enjoyed walking the streets and into the various businesses…..the folks were welcoming and relaxed.

I needed something to take back to the office, so I figured this would be the spot, right? We went to a couple of bakeries, but this one won out……
