Solomon Bagel Company (North Park)

mmm-yoso!!! is a food blog.  Today, Cathy is writing.

Solomon Bagel Company has closed.  It will be missed.

The Mister and I had an appointment near the airport the other morning and decided to take the side streets instead of the freeway to get home.  We got to 30th street and found a parking spot.  925EAB83-2010-45F1-9B1A-AD313B162D6E It turns out that online, this relatively new (it opened in April 2020) shop is called Solomon Bagels and Donuts.  However on this day, there were no donuts (I overheard that something wasn't working that morning).  We weren't looking for donuts anyway.
5FDF8F98-8855-465E-A157-F49F98352DE9 The menu includes beverages, hot/cold/vegan sandwiches, a variety of toppings as well as donuts and donut holes on most days.
0029AE2D-0F69-42CB-B56F-4ED825445878 We were here around 10:30 in the morning and a lot was already sold out.  Good for this local business!

C21CABDD-6848-48E7-87EA-61D355B90960 199D5318-1611-4AD5-A9AA-3B9F928EBF37 I chose to try the Ukrainian Everything bagel with cream cheese.  A pumpernickel base with typical 'everything' seeds on both sides of the bagel, this was wonderful!  A good, chewy, New York style bagel (smaller than you find at the larger chain bagel stores).  I enjoy the rye flour base of pumpernickel.
898241B1-29C7-4310-9C61-90FCEABA25CA We also tried the countertop special of a Pastrami (on toasted rye, of course) ($8.99) with sauerkraut.  Lettuce, tomato and onion are also standard add ons for sandwiches.  The pastrami was of good quality; no pepper crust (which neither of us like).  Quite a large sandwich and another excellent, seeded rye, chewy bagel.

It must be crowded in the mornings, when there is a 15% discount before 8 a.m. – Lucky nearby neighbors.  We will return if there is available parking.  Soo was here in 2020.

Elsa’s Kitchen (again)(Greek and burgers)(SDSU area)

mmm-yoso!!! is being written by Cathy while Kirk and His Missus are catching up on missed vacationing.

Yes, I wrote about Elsa's Kitchen in 2007 and again in 2011, The Mister and I have been there many times since and here's another post.  Elsa's survived Covid-19. 2C8CE5F0-2AA4-46ED-ABB9-2E7EACA98561 Located in a nondescript strip mall with a nice sized parking lot at the NorthEast corner of El Cajon and 73rd, next to the gas station,
DFBF46C4-6C4C-44FB-9485-B00BFCD3C2AE Elsa's Kitchen has been here since at least 2009.
7E73023E-E389-44A8-93BF-A3639531F7A3
You order and pay at the hole in the wall and soon your order will be ready.

E6B933F0-383E-42D2-B283-113B978142F8 The pastrami burger ($6.99)is hand shaped and char-broiled.  I *love* the char broiled flavor.  It's topped with a quality pastrami (not the pepper coated one; a regular smoked corned beef; the Liquor Store next door sells Boars Head deli meats and I think they get the pastrami there) and the usual toppings.  Hefty and very, very good.
F9C2EB94-8CE9-4ADD-9A96-40BA6A3626AF The bun is toasted, both on the top and inside, making for a non-soggy sandwich.
4E121AA5-C1FD-49E5-8C12-A021B4594B26 The large greek salad ($10.99) is a great meal.  Plenty of gyros and very fresh  traditional Greek salad- romaine, tomato, onion, cucumber and Feta, served with a really nice dressing and tzatziki.
01F63448-075B-4396-939D-C110B40805E3 As always, a large order of onion rings ($3.99) was ordered.  I have mentioned before that all Greek restaurants make wonderful, from scratch, thick cut rings from sweet onions.  No exception here.

Elsa's Kitchen Greek and American Food 7022 El Cajon Blvd (619) 464-6711 Mon-Sat 9-9, Sun 9-8. (on our last visit, there was a window sign that it would be closed on Saturday and Sunday, so maybe call to check)BC400171-6E67-4281-8350-4644F5B877F2

Home Sweet Home Cafe (revisit) (Escondido)

mmm-yoso!!! is being written by Cathy today; Kirk and His Missus are vacationing.

The last time I wrote about Home Sweet Home Cafe was 2019-BC (before Covid-19).   Time for an update, because this oddly located Breakfast-Lunch mainstay has survived (for more than 20 years). 254A0335-A93B-4EFB-9B04-B8D0E4B117D3In the midst of a very industrial area of West Escondido, this nondescript restaurant storefront is open only for breakfast and lunch.  Parking is in front and along the side of the building.
1696DA64-BA79-4384-B63A-7214808A931D Many customers are 'regulars'.
1F17DF77-E83B-45B7-9C0E-6326E305EA5A1F17DF77-E83B-45B7-9C0E-6326E305EA5A1F17DF77-E83B-45B7-9C0E-6326E305EA5A1F17DF77-E83B-45B7-9C0E-6326E305EA5A1F17DF77-E83B-45B7-9C0E-6326E305EA5A1F17DF77-E83B-45B7-9C0E-6326E305EA5A1F17DF77-E83B-45B7-9C0E-6326E305EA5A The menu is served all day.
254A0335-A93B-4EFB-9B04-B8D0E4B117D3 586457D7-5230-4D3F-AD58-9135DDED1010
AB76CA8F-D769-4F32-8D46-98CD6BF1E9EA My usual order is a ham and egg sandwich ($12) on rye, made with a good amount of juicy, non-salty ham steak.  The plate comes with a choice of potato.  The home fries are excellent, can be made with or without bell peppers and/or onion.  Optional home made gravy on the potatoes ($2.50) is worth it- it is bacon gravy (not sausage); a wonderful version.
254A0335-A93B-4EFB-9B04-B8D0E4B117D3 F9D64BDE-7715-470E-9F75-0BA9FFA8905B The Eggs Benedict ($12.50) are made with perfectly poached eggs and plenty of ham on top of a toasted English muffin, covered in a home made, lightly lemony hollandaise- (we asked for added spinach on this day).  Instead of potato on the side, a request for corned beef hash was accommodated ($2.50).  A good quality canned hash and fried to a nice crisp.
82ABA8E0-A192-4190-BEE2-75A58D174469 On another visit, The Mister ordered the corned beef hash and eggs ($12) substituting homemade corned beef ($1)- it's just corned beef!  A wonderful, lighter carb breakfast.  (The hash browns were nicely crisped, the over easy eggs were perfect and even the sourdough toast is a better/nice sour quality).

One day, I'll do a lunch post. Soo was here in 2021 and had a burger, among other items.

2023 Rose Parade float road test #2 and a food snack adventure.

mmm-yoso!!! is being written by Cathy for a few days; Kirk and His Missus are out and about, researching for more posts for you to enjoy.

Link to Road Test #1

At the end of July, another road test for 2023 Rose Parade floats was held.  Instead of The Mister and I driving up, friend and fellow blogger, cc  drove to our home, arriving at 5 a.m. and then she and I headed North to Irwindale.  We arrived after some floats had completed testing, but were able to still see a few interesting things.D54EE71C-DE67-4254-A233-0427648EF4FA The float barn is filling up. 5366D157-CECF-4721-ADA6-456375C221DA It looks like Phoenix Decorating will build 22 of the floats which will be in the Parade on January 2.  Decorating begins on December 3 and there is a link on that website.
D54EE71C-DE67-4254-A233-0427648EF4FA The Kiwanis International float is painted and essentially ready for decorating (this second road test had 'weight' (people) on board and the maneuverability, mechanics and fire drill all passed).  You can see the door open under the wave, for the "spotter" as well as the open door near the center, where the "driver" gets to his seat under the float.
D54EE71C-DE67-4254-A233-0427648EF4FA Unsure which float this is, but you can see the 'spotter' in front and a bit of the 'driver' all the way to the left and back in this photo.  This float is small enough to drive the parade route without having to 'collapse' under street lights and the freeway bridge along the way.
3A94B8C2-308C-4021-B568-1B4A003A78C7The float which will carry the Royal Court was being tested.  It's the same float used the previous three years and is not judged for any awards.  It is 'redecorated' each year.
0C0E02B9-82A1-4958-91BA-17AC746FC6B9 The Petal Pushers and Lutheran Hour Ministries float, "A New Day With Jesus" was tested and passed.
040B3179-663E-41BD-8A08-2AE417872BF6 Rotary International float, "Serving with Pride and Imagination", finished its testing and is also ready to be decorated. F8915AEF-FBE3-4E97-A280-C7A4126B3B52 "Hope for Peace", sponsored by the Oddfellows and Rebekahs was also tested.  I took this screenshot from the Phoenix Decorating Facebook page, which posts short videos of the floats on testing day.

Now, on to the food portion of this post.
29846377-CB74-4DD6-BF9E-F48E93C5ABB6 First, the obligatory stop at Portos, six miles South of the Float Barn.  A few days before, the County of Los Angeles had put another Covid ruling in place and we had to wait before entering the bakery.  We thought we wouldn't be allowed to eat inside.

C69E5941-0A4A-46F8-8453-8001382DAAA3 We purchased pieces of lechon (slow roasted suckling pig)-perfectly cooked with a flavorful moist meat and crackly skin.  We also purchased fried chicken skins; the chicharron were large pieces and perfectly lite and crisp.  Toto's Lechon Manok 1545 Amar Road West Covina 91792

To the right of the steam trays is a small doorway labeled 'Bakery' and in there, we found a nice display.

What a day of adventure and new places as well as 2023 Rose Parade floats!

Crossroads Deli (UTC)

Thanks for stopping to read this food blog, mmm-yoso!!!  Cathy is writing this post while Kirk (and His Missus) are doing some research for future posts.

So.  It has come to pass that in addition to The Mister needing to go to Scripps Torrey Pines for medical appointments, I, too, have a physician in the same building.  We have been coordinating our appointments so that we can drive together, saving some fuel costs.  This means that we get to stop somewhere 'on the way home' when we are finished.  Kirk wrote about Crossroads in 2014 and again in 2018, so I had an idea of where we could stop.

Crossroads Deli is located on the first floor of a group of three apartment complexes.   29367E9C-0754-49DB-ABC1-3E6DEA5B202C74F4F323-851B-4B5B-ACB2-C88EEA49B7E8 Each of the buildings has an underground "Guest parking" area before their respective security gates. F1590C72-0B8D-4198-A754-EF873EB531E4 620599D2-8537-4064-8E25-9E1AC4E9D99C Step inside, there's a menu on the wall before you have to walk up to the register.  Many people seem to pre-order and just walk in to pick up. A46BD802-6003-4C34-88DB-AE23CB64C1E0 The coffee is an exclusive blend made by local roastery, Cafe Moto.  It is excellent.

526826E7-EEFD-434F-A278-B1BCAF60D88F There is usually a soup of the day, always Mom's Chicken Soup and always Mom's Beef & Bean Chili.  Here's the chili ($5.75).  An excellent, from scratch chili -not too spicy and very flavorful- the coarse ground beef and fresh cooked kidney beans make the texture of the chili very pleasant.
F1590C72-0B8D-4198-A754-EF873EB531E4Here is the Rachel Specialty Sandwich ($10.75).  Similar to a Reuben, made with heated Boar's Head pastrami (smoked corned beef), Swiss, mayonnaise and Mom's Cole slaw (excellent flavor), on toasted rye.  The breads here are all from local companies; I do like seeded rye.  An excellent, filling sandwich. 0C5B520B-D67D-4B16-9938-0BB717EB72D4 At the bottom corner of the menu board are Monday-Friday daily specials.

F1590C72-0B8D-4198-A754-EF873EB531E4 05FEF926-FDA3-46DE-8529-B702DA18810F We were here on  Falafel Friday.  ($10.75).  The family recipe- vegan falafels (look at how green and delicately fluffy) wrapped in a large, warm pita with hummus, tahini sauce, lettuce, tomato and chopped pickle.  This is my favorite falafel in San Diego.
F0027FC5-426C-4269-9F7B-A1D674266BB7FE357F3D-8DA8-4921-BDE3-DB3CE9663771 We also were here on Meatball Monday ($10.75) Mom's from scratch meatballs (five) covered in a from scratch marinara, melted Provolone and served on a toasted French roll.  Excellent.  The large meatballs were light, meaty and flavorful with basil, garlic and parsley.

Crossroads has been in this location since 2012; it is run by Al and Nelly and their son, Rob.  For 30 years before that, it was Park Boulevard Foods in University Heights, one of San Diego's original Mom and Pop Sandwich Shops.  All of Mom's recipes are tried and true.  Everything here, from the food to the people is simply wonderful.

China Bros (Escondido)

mmm-yoso!!! is being written by Cathy today; Kirk is busy elsewhere.

On Centre City Parkway, about a mile off the 15 on the west side is the Escondido Trader Joe's and Major Market.  When you drive into the parking lot, pretty much in front of you (between those two stores) is China Bros.  I've stopped here a few times during the year, taking home some meals.  One day, The Mister and I drove up so we could eat in before doing some shopping.711A425B-6692-4693-AFBB-B303DE1CA856 Bros, not 'Brothers', Bros.  Waiting inside to pick up 'to-go' orders, you'll hear the phone answered 'China Bros'.
E7559F98-5CD5-44B4-96BA-B685B0301766 There's a menu on the wall.  If you are eating in, there are wipeable, one page menus handed out.  I do appreciate attention to cleanliness.
0C255725-5160-4306-8208-290BCBB4A4DBAs usual, I ordered hot tea ($2.25) which was kept refilled.  Egg drop soup (with corn) was brought out for both of us.  A very eggy version made with a rich flavored (not salty) chicken broth.
A487756E-0965-46F4-BF13-27C48BD25FE5 The Shrimp Egg Foo Young ($12.95), of course, had to be ordered for our first eat-in meal.  What a lovely version!
9E67BE60-1D43-4208-B45F-9C4F8C9FA612FB842A85-548A-4CD2-8D7F-D7321E77A6AF Fluffy eggs, light top and bottom crusts, plenty of plump, juicy shrimp.  Served with rice and a good brown (again, not salty) gravy, this is an excellent meal with plenty of leftovers which reheated well.
19AB43F0-015E-4642-B796-4FC4035BE663 Lunch Specials (until 4 p.m. daily) are served with steamed rice, fried rice or chow mein or half and half of your choice, as well as the corn egg drop soup.  This was L-19, "Fish filet with black bean sauce" ($9.95).  The pieces of fish were lightly breaded and fried to a light crisp, which remained crispy even under the slightly thick, garlic-y, salty black bean sauce.  The vegetables were very fresh and also remained crisp.  The chow mein seems to be requested a lot here and has a slight smoky 'wok hei'.

The blend of flavors are well thought out in each dish I've had, portions are large, quality is excellent.  As mentioned, a very busy take out business, but also very accommodating if you choose to eat in.

Starbread Bakery (Chula Vista) Senorita Bread

mmm-yoso!!! is a food blog.  Cathy is writing a short post today and might do so again tomorrow.

Starbread Bakery opened in 1988 in Vallejo, California.  The small bakeshop began selling fresh made sweet treats, specializing in Señorita bread, a Filipino Spanish bread.  The family owned business has grown (via franchising beginning during the Covid-19 pandemic) and a location opened in Chula Vista a few months ago.DBE88D4D-90D2-4288-B30D-4A1CCDA9A2C4 Located at the South East corner of Broadway at H Street, next to the new/current location of Aqui Es Texcoco (Kirk's most recent post was at the 'old' location).
DBE88D4D-90D2-4288-B30D-4A1CCDA9A2C4 Señorita bread is sold hot from the oven; that's why there is a short wait; it's never 'day old'…even if you take it home…DBE88D4D-90D2-4288-B30D-4A1CCDA9A2C4
3D93243F-16E3-4594-BE5D-428D00BACC71  You can buy it by the bag or the box.  You really should at least buy the minimum of five pieces as long as you are in the neighborhood.  Buy more to give to friends.  Buy some to eat in the car while driving home.  Seriously, 60¢ for one piece.  A piece of happiness.  Joy.  Deliciousness.

This is why you are here.  The Señorita bread.  A sweet bread roll/pastry made with butter and sugar, sprinkled with breadcrumbs.  It is simple.  The simple things are the best.

You might have noticed there are other bakery items in the glass case and on the counter.  Many (sweet) baked goods are here (donuts, cupcakes, small poundcake).  This is a guava jelly filled malasada ($2); delicious!

Mahalo Shave Ice Company (inside Zion)

mmm-yoso!!! is (again) being written by Cathy today, while Kirk and His Missus are vacationing.

In January, Mahalo Shave Ice opened, taking the place of Cocohodo, (which truly is missed) in the Zion Market Food Court

46E6CB64-B79D-4F74-B671-1E777E945419 In 2016, Mahalo began as a shave ice food truck.  It expanded into an Arizona franchise in 2020, along with catering events.  The  Zion Market storefront is the first brick and mortar location for this (now two location) locally owned  business "inspired by the beauty of the Hawaiian people".
3A24A123-AB64-47E2-9D1B-2ABA6CD4C830 The menu is simple; Five items.
8F7A26C0-5062-4132-A0DC-DD1C571EF25C The choice of flavors can be not as simple, depending on your cravings.

3A24A123-AB64-47E2-9D1B-2ABA6CD4C830 For this shave ice plate ($6), I chose li hing mui guava (li hing is the flavor of dried, salty plums) and tigers blood (strawberry, watermelon and coconut) flavors; not very photogenic but very tasty.  Adding ice cream ($1) rounded out the plate.

Friendly people working here, serving great, shareable treats.

You may have noticed above the menu board "Proudly and lovingly crafted with cane sugar & ocean friendly utensils".  The 'plate/bowl' is a quality compostable type of material, the little straw is made of bamboo and the spoon (printed with the logo) is fascinating, eco-friendly-and works.  We had never seen a spoon like that before and within a week of our visit here, had seen similar spoons at several places.

Frank’s Bakery-Gibaldi’s Italian Bread (Spring Valley)

mmm-yoso!!! continues to be written about food and by Cathy over this Independence Day holiday weekend.  Kirk is in the midst of a great vacation with His Missus.

This post is about one of the reasons I write other posts.  An errand.

Since 1948.  Cash Only.  The signage.7705CFA6-DDC0-42B7-9654-0E6250BFCAB6 A simple storefront.  Park in front.
B5B5AC6F-F915-417E-9CEE-BFEB60F7EF11 This is the view from the doorway.
4A0ACE9B-1DFF-4782-8DFD-2B7BAFD7FB29 Depending on the time of the day you arrive, or maybe just the day of the week, the shelves will be filled…or already empty.
4A0ACE9B-1DFF-4782-8DFD-2B7BAFD7FB29 Over to the right is a small refrigerator.  I usually also pick an item from here.
7705CFA6-DDC0-42B7-9654-0E6250BFCAB6 The round Squaw bread ($4) is a craving that The Mister has had lately.  The molasses sweetened, rye and wheat flour based bread is soft, chewy and has a thin, chewy crust, topped with oats.  This size and shape allows for various uses at meals (breakfast side toast, a smaller sandwich, or several small sandwiches).  It also seems to stay fresh a day or two longer than most breads.  The fig cookies ($6) (from the refrigerator) are one of my favorites.
7705CFA6-DDC0-42B7-9654-0E6250BFCAB6 The baguette shaped Squaw bread ($3) allows for more consistent slices.  The cheese Danish ($2) is soft and delicate and sweet and wonderful to share for dessert at home.
8C4091B2-3AD3-4464-B7E5-669AEE889D4B Same with the Bear Claw ($2).
8C4091B2-3AD3-4464-B7E5-669AEE889D4B57E56B18-DB9C-4C1B-91EA-8425990A1FE0 The walnut cranberry bread is unsliced and the flavors are an excellent compliment to a simple ham and cheese filling.  Toasted with a bit of cream cheese is a nice treat.
D44F746B-E3CD-4A16-ACEA-1E76E02819CC The pignoli Cookies ($6)-soft and chewy interior with a lightly crisp exterior are *very* almond flavored. Traditional recipe- almond paste, sugar and egg whites, topped with pine nuts, these are a special treat some weeks.
864B2F3A-4DA7-4679-B0F8-6F9731C90074 The rye bread ($4) here is an especially good version, filled with seeds and surrounded by cornmeal.  I appreciate that it is already sliced.

Everything here is fresh and an adventure to try.

4991D1C1-DF46-4CC3-9D5B-083EAF27A661 Just realized I neglected the Italian bread (also $3 or $4) it can be plain or topped with sesame seeds and is a quality White bread.  The above Italian rolls also available ($4/dozen).  A good size for small sandwiches or burgers.

Yes, it's that time of the year.  D90B81A2-AA76-4E0D-B444-7AB63A3B7D3A The Theme of "Turning the Corner celebrating the unlimited potential that each new year brings, was announced by the Tournament of Roses in January by the 2023 President of the Tournament of Roses, Amy Wainscott.  “The 2023 theme celebrates turning a corner. Whether that corner is actual or figurative like the unlimited potential that each new year brings—we all enjoy the opportunity of a fresh start,” explained Wainscott. “Turning a corner means rising above – alone, or with family, friends and community. This year, as we turn the corner together, we share in the hope, beauty and joy of what 2023 will bring.”

There was a poster drawing contest and the above logo was debuted in May.

Organizations that will participate in the Parade began submitting designs to be approved by the Tournament and Phoenix Decorating Company, one of three companies which construct floats for the parade, (six organizations also build their own floats) had its first Road Test last Saturday.  The floats were tested for mechanics and maneuverability and will undergo at least two more tests before decorating begins the first Saturday in December.

C2940383-A513-440A-A142-873D309A37E4 No idea who has sponsored this float, but can see the the Spotter will be standing at the front and can also see the driver now while this float is in its rebar/pencil rod stage.

///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

There was no announcement of the Road Testing and The Mister and I drove up not expecting to see any floats.  Our goal was Portos for breakfast.  The West Covina location is six miles from the Phoenix Decorating barn.

7A0589C3-F71C-4995-AF04-57BFA8C42AA9 Well.  Turns out at 8:05 a.m., there's not much of a line.  I ordered pastries, breakfast and beverages all at one counter.
7A0589C3-F71C-4995-AF04-57BFA8C42AA9 The meat pie ($1.15) is filled with the same picadillo that is in the famous potato balls, but is baked in flaky pastry.  A nice snack while we waited.
7A0589C3-F71C-4995-AF04-57BFA8C42AA9 Also ordered: cheese roll ($0.99), apple strudel ($1.45) and a refugiado (guava cream cheese pastry) ($1.09).  We took the sweets home.
7A0589C3-F71C-4995-AF04-57BFA8C42AA9 Soon, the beverages were delivered to the table.  Portos cortadito ($2.89) (espresso with sweetened condensed milk) and a summertime item- iced strawberry matcha latte (large) ($4.89).  Both beverages are quality and flavorful.
7A0589C3-F71C-4995-AF04-57BFA8C42AA999F90C37-42B5-430C-A4EA-F63FD3E33681Soon, the ropa vieja sandwich ($7.50) was brought out.  Served on fresh soft Cuban bread, the 'Cuban birria' (Cuban-style stewed beef with bell pepper, onion, olive, tomato sauce, and Spanish seasonings) was excellent and quite large.  The plantain chips (mariquitas) are seasoned with garlic salt and are a perfect side to the sandwich, breakfast time or not. 7A0589C3-F71C-4995-AF04-57BFA8C42AA9 The ham and cheese (cheddar-jack blend) omelette ($5.50) is served on a fresh buttery croissant with a mayo-mustard spread and is also quite large.

Always quality, friendly, efficient.  This family owned, six location, Los Angeles legacy is always a great stop.
