Lunch with JJ – Nómade Tapas and Records

Recently, the Missus had an appointment in North Park and we decided to take JJ along…he really enjoys the area and then grab an early lunch. Of course Bica immediately came to mind, but the place was packed. As we headed west on Adams, I recalled a place named Nómade had opened close to An's and Et Voila replacing what I believe was once as sushi bar?

Nomade 01

The place was listed as dog friendly so we headed on in. It was empty at 1030 on this morning.

Nomade 02

The two women working were very nice and one of them even took photos of JJ! We were seated and handed menus. They brought JJ some water.

IMG_0832a

Nómade calls itself a Tapas Bar, which I believe it becomes during the evening. It seems more of a coffee – cafe kind of place with a small menu for lunch.

Nomade 03

I thought the Missus would go with the Tortilla Espanola, but She decided on the Huevos Rotos ($16) instead. I got the Mollete Toast ($14) and added eggs which was an additional $6….well, twenty bucks for and open faced sandwich.

Nomade 04 Nomade 05 The food did take a while with the Huevos Rotos arriving first.

The sunny side up eggs were nicely done with crisp edges. The Jamon Serrano was sliced too thick making the fatty edges really tough to eat.

The tallow fries were limp, dry, and in need of salt.

The Mollete Toast was better.

Nomade 00  Nomade 07  Though the eggs were overcooked; the yolks dry.

"FOY" Peter might appreciate this open faced toast as it used soyrizo, which had a mild smoky-paprika-ish flavor, along with a smear of black beans. I think a more flavor forward cheese would have done better than the very mild Monterey Jack Cheese used.

The slice of sourdough was nice and crusty; though it was mild in terms of yeasty-sourdough tones I enjoy.

Not a bad open face toast….but not sure it's worth twenty bucks. The Missus was on point when She told me "you can make this at home for less than five bucks". Which kind of sums things upNomade 08

An nice neighborhood place with friendly staff; though it doesn't seem to be worth going out of your way for. They did treat JJ nice and he even got his photo taken.

And it seems like they're going to have new hours starting today.

Valle de Guadalupe – La Cocina de Doña Esthela

After having such a wonderful time in Valle de Guadalupe we were headed home. Ivan, who was our driver from San Diego to Puerto Nuevo, then our first day in Valle, was of course exactly on time to pick us up for the trip "home".

But there was one last stop. Aimee had instructed us not to have breakfast at Contemplación Hotel Boutique as she had a "must stop" for breakfast planned for us. It would be La Cocina de Doña Esthela. Which I had heard of since the one and only Anthony Bourdain raved about the Borrego Tatemada. And heck, I didn't know the place is a Michelin Bib Gourmand restaurant. And a month after our visit, I saw that Gorden Ramsey had visited to learn how to make tortillas as well.

Ivan parked and we walked over. I expected a super long line, but since this was early in the week we actually had no wait!

IMG_9702

Though the interior was packed.

IMG_9717

And yes, that's a smoked filled dining room……oh, the fragrances filling the air…..and if you thought "Korean BBQ shirt" was potent…..

IMG_9718

There were really only two items we were targeting here…..

IMG_9703

IMG_9704

IMG_9705

IMG_9708

Of course we started with some Cafe de Olla…..not overly sweet.

IMG_9709

And I got a small order of the Borrego Tatemada, which came with consomme, beans, and those huge tortillas.

IMG_9712 IMG_9713  Was not a fan of the runny, mushy beans; but that consomme…so full of rich, "lamb-y" goodness, nicely spiced, smoky, hints of spices like oregano…perfectly salted; probably my favorite consomme to date!

The meat; which really looked like machaca was surprisingly tender and like the consomme so full of flavor! A dip in the soup, some onions for pungency, a squeeze of lime to add acidity and cut the richness, and man; it was such a wonderful morning!

And as good as the borrego was; the Elote Pancakes were "a-maiz-ing"! Sorry, I couldn't help it!

IMG_9714

I'm not a fan of hotcakes; but this is an exception. Forget the butter, we didn't need that. These were fluffy and moist, with a slight grittiness of corn. But the flavor; my goodness, the natural sweetness of the corn, a mild butteriness, we really enjoyed this.

I would say that Doña Esthela did live up to the hype.

We truly enjoyed our time in Valle. Much of the credit goes to Ivan, Isaac, and Aimee Cruz. I highly recommend using the services of Valle Guadalupe Baja Tours. It ain't cheap for two people, but with both Ivan and Isaac being so punctual, knowledgeable, and flexible, plus being able to customize things, we had a great time. And no, Aimee has no idea I have a blog. I'm not sure she's remember who I am. Because I'm just a regular guy who makes really bad dad jokes and likes to eat and explore.

IMG_9715

I'm not sure why we took so long to visit Valle…….

Valle de Guadalupe – Breakfast at Salvia Blanca (Contemplación Hotel), Vinos Las Nubes, and Lunch at Decantos Vinicola

We slept well after our dinner at Fauna. The rises early in Valle in June and it's great to wake up to this view in the morning.

IMG_9557

It was wonderful to make some coffee and sit out on the lanai and take everything in…..

IMG_9558a

So relaxing. Breakfast was included in our stay and the restaurant at Contemplación Hotel (which I briefly covered in this post) named Salvia Blanca. The restaurant doesn't open until 830, so we had time to wander along the various paths and do some additional exploring.

IMG_9561

IMG_9565

IMG_9568

We loved all the little art installations along the pathways.

IMG_9569

Which led us to Salvia Blanca.

IMG_9573

The restaurant was fairly large with a lovely outdoor dining area.

IMG_9566

Things start later in Valle…..we were the only folks having breakfast in the restaurant on this day.

IMG_9577

Not being too hungry, the Missus and I split sunny side up eggs, bacon, and beans…..

IMG_9581

IMG_9582

Which (of course) came with tortillas.

IMG_9583

This was a fine breakfast. I had made dinner reservations at Salvia Blanca since I (correctly) thought we'd be having a busy day and would just like to relax for dinner. So you'll be reading more about the place then.

After breakfast, the Missus and I decided to explore more of the hotel grounds before our scheduled pick-up time.

IMG_9584a

IMG_9585

We started noticing a lot of dog themed art along the way…..like this statue of Kuzco.

IMG_9586

We would later see several really well behaved pooches around the offices and Salvia Blanca. We were told when we checked out that they consider these dogs to be "staff members"! How cool is that! Sadly, I did forget to ask about Kuzco. I guess that just gives us reason to return, right?

IMG_9588

IMG_9592

There's even a lovely little chapel on the grounds.

IMG_9595

IMG_9596

We returned to our villa to freshen up before our driver arrived….and like clockwork, fifteen minutes before our designated pick up time, he was ready and waiting for us.

Our driver today was Isaac, who was very outgoing and fun. And also very flexible as we'd end up making two detours in the afternoon which was lovely.

Our first stop was Las Nubes Bodegas y Viñedos, which had a beautiful setting on a hillside with a lovely view.

IMG_9607

IMG_9609

We sat on the lovely patio.

IMG_9608

Admiring the view and petting the two lovely pooches…..

IMG_9618

While doing our tasting….it doesn't get much better than that, right?

IMG_9610

If I recall, the Missus enjoyed the Rose here….

For me, it was all about the view and the pooches….

IMG_9620

Our next stop was just a short distance away. Decantos Vinicola also had a pleasant view. We did our tasting on the porch area.

IMG_9622

Then were escorted into the restaurant for lunch.

IMG_9630

We just wanted something refreshing and light, so we got the Tiradito.

IMG_9624

Which was interesting as it included Shiitake Mushrooms! Which gave it a more earthy-savory flavor; tempering down the acidity of the dish. I don't recall what the fish was; but it was fresh and fairly meaty. Of course it came with Tostadas.

We also got a half dozen Oysters.

IMG_9626

These were also interesting as it was topped with a melon compote, which added a fruity-refreshing aspect to the briny meatiness of the oysters. Quite an interesting combination to say the least.

After lunch, we were met by a very friendly young lady who took us on a tour of the wine making facilities. The pathway was artistically set-up….you just follow the barrels.

IMG_9640

IMG_9633

For some reason, the underground cellar reminded me of our Champagne Tour in…of course Champagne!

IMG_9637

And soon enough, we were off to our last two stops…..

Stay Tuned!

Road Trip – Tiger Bar & Cafe (June Lake) and it’s back to Erick Schat’s Bakkerÿ (Bishop) and Alabama Hills Cafe & Bakery (Lone Pine)

I thought I'd best finish up this series on our stay in June Lake so here goes…..

After the Missus did Her morning paddleboarding while I got breakfast at Silver Lake Resort Cafe and then hiking the Reversed Peak Loop Trail, we headed back to June Lake to freshen up. We waned to grab a quick lunch and just relax. Right across the street from our accommodations is the Tiger Bar & Cafe, one of the few places opened daily from nine to nine.

IMG_1279

The place serves everything from breakfasts, to "Mexican" dishes, to burgers, to salads……you get the picture. We decided to just get a simple sandwich and you know the Missus….She loves Her bacon; so we got a BLT on sourdough, with chips as our side to go and walked on down to Gull Lake, returning to pick up our lunch.

IMG_1269

Once we picked up our order; we simply strolled across the street, to our accommodations, and split our sandwich in the comfort of our room.

IMG_1270

This was pretty much a by-the-book BLT. The chips were a bit thicker than we prefer.

The bread was a bit under-toasted, but the bacon was nice and crisped, the tomatoes decently ripe.

IMG_1272

Would I go out of my way for this sandwich…..well, no. But since it was right across the street…..

On my way out, I noticed the "specials" menu.

IMG_1280

I noticed a couple of items that we interesting. Plus, the Missus and I just wanted to relax before leaving the next morning. So, after our afternoon nap, we decided to head on over for an early dinner.

It was 4pm and there were a few customers already in the place….most of them having a "happy hour" it seems.

IMG_1281

The Missus had a glass of wine, I had a light and refreshing Mammoth Brewing Pilsner.

IMG_1282

And we ordered from the specials grease board menu, all items were priced at $9.95. Our Server was very nice and friendly.

First to arrive were the pork rib tips.

IMG_1284

This was actually pretty good. Not a huge fan of the overly sweet, mass-produced BBQ sauce; but the rib tips were fairly tender, with nice cartiledgeous chewiness. A decent amount of smokiness with a mild rub. It was better than we had expected.

Next to arrive were the fried pickles. Man, the portion size was pretty large.

IMG_1286

Crisp outside, with a sour-tangy-saltiness, this was a nice version.

The Fried Brussel Sprouts on the other hand was our least favorite.

IMG_1287

The batter didn't hold up well and was quite salty. The actual brussel sprouts were mushy and had a weird texture.

Still, two out of three ain't bad. Again, I wouldn't go out of my way for this, but being across the street…..

Tiger Bar & Cafe

June Lake, CA 93529

Of course, after all of that fried food, we needed to take a walk and headed back down to Gull Lake to watch the day turn into night.

IMG_1290

IMG_1293

The next morning we headed out early and made a stop in Bishop at Erick Schat's.

IMG_1298

This time we got the Sheepherder Bread and of course more cookies for the Missus.

IMG_1299

That bread is great…..this will be a regular stop for us from now on.

IMG_1301

Erick Schat's Bakkerÿ
763 N Main St.
Bishop, CA 93514

About an hour south of Bishop is Lone Pine and it seemed like a good idea to make a brunch stop before the five hour plus drive home. We decided on revisiting Alabama Hills Cafe. We stopped an easily found parking and unlike our previous visit, things were rather mellow in the restaurant.

IMG_1304

The Missus got the bacon and egg breakfast, which came with a rather dense biscuit, and breakfast potatoes….and of course bacon.

IMG_1309 IMG_1311While the potatoes had a generous amount of bell peppers and onions, it was bit on the greasy side. No complaints about the bacon as She also ended up poaching some of mine.

Having thought that the BLT I had for lunch here was decent; I got the Breakfast BLT.

IMG_1312

Other than the bread being a bit under toasted….and the interesting portion of grapes….I guess they wanted to make sure I had some fruit with breakfast; I enjoyed this sandwich. Even though the eggs could have been a bit more runny; there were no off flavors, the nice smoky saltiness of the bacon (before the Missus stole it), acidity of the tomato, this was a decent sandwich. I'd have it again.

IMG_1315

Typical diner-ish fare; pretty much what we expected.

And then we were headed home……intent on getting some Asian food for the Missus!

Thanks for stopping by!

Home Sweet Home (Escondido) (again)

Welcome back to mmm-yoso!!!, a food blog.  Once again, Cathy is writing about what she eats.  Kirk is busy with research so he can write interesting things about his food adventures.

The Mister and I have enjoyed many meals at Home Sweet Home Cafe with my most recent posting in 2022.  Recently, my brother and I visited for breakfast.

IMG_9935

This nondescript diner in the midst of an industrial park took over from another diner in 2010.  The simple breakfast-lunch menu is served all open hours and you are always made to feel like home when you are here.  So friendly.  Just watch where you park on weekdays; the other open businesses are strict.

IMG_9932

There is something to see wherever you look; on the walls, tabletops, windows.

IMG_0425IMG_0425IMG_0425IMG_0425IMG_0425
IMG_0425IMG_0425IMG_0425

My brother asks to go out to 'local' places, defining such as 'having mismatched coffee cups'.  I need to photograph those next time.

IMG_9931

Biscuits and gravy (half order) with one large sausage, two eggs and home fries ($13).  The potatoes are nicely crisped with onion and bell pepper.  The breakfast sausage is an excellent quality and pieces mixed in with the peppery white gravy poured over the fresh made, crisp crusted fluffy biscuit just make it a perfect dish.  Of course the orange yolked poached eggs are quite nice.
IMG_9931

Hot Cake Special (two) with one large sausage link and two (scrambled eggs) ($13.50) is pretty much what my brother always wants for breakfast.
IMG_9931

A side of deep-fried bacon ($7).  He asked for 'very crisp' bacon and our delightful waitress suggested deep fried.  Of Course! This was really good.

Consistency, quality.  A great place.  Home.

Original Pancake House (again)

mmm-yoso!!! is being written by Cathy while Kirk is having a lovely time with His Missus and JJ during a quick getaway.

My first post about The Original Pancake House was in 2009, then in 2013, again in 2015 and most recently in 2021.  It was time for another breakfast report from this consistently wonderful breakfast place.  This time I was with my brother.

IMG_0770

IMG_0396IMG_0396IMG_0396IMG_0396

The menu choices are about the same, with increased prices, of course.

 IMG_0760

The half and half pitcher for the pure 36% whipping cream (not half and half) has been a mainstay in every location of OPH we had ever been. (Coffee is now $4.65, kept constantly refilled) (it tastes so good with whipping cream).
IMG_0764

My brother wanted pecan pancakes.  This is a half order ($10.45).  The pancake batter here is unique to the franchise; consistency is important.  Slightly sweet batter cooked until the cake is lightly crisp on the exterior, filled with pecans and then topped with plenty of toasted pecans and powdered sugar
IMG_0763

He really likes bacon and recalled the thick cut bacon here was particularly good.  A side order ($7.95) was worth it.  Bacon and pancakes, why not? He really liked his meal.
IMG_0766

On the other hand, I wanted savory this morning and the Chicken Crepe ($16.70) was my order.  Diced chicken breast simmered with green bell peppers, pimentos and olives added to a mushroom sherry sauce and rolled in a flavorful (slightly sweet if you taste it alone), delicate crepe, topped with crispy sliced almonds.  This was served with three crisp, light potato pancakes.

IMG_0767
Our total condiments included (real) maple syrup, butter, sour cream and applesauce.

Quite a perfect meal.

Original Pancake House website  3906 Convoy Street San Diego 92111 (858) 565-1740 Open daily 7 a.m. Closes at 1 p.m. weekdays, 2 p.m. on weekends.

IMG_0401

IMG_0400

Anyway, we were reminiscing about going to this fancy breakfast place when we were younger.  It turns out OPH started in our hometown of Detroit…and then moved to San Diego.  Everything we took for granted did happen in the best possible way; we just followed it.

Friends of Friends -coffee and breakfast (national City)

mmm-yoso!!! is a blog about food which has been around since 2005.  Today, Cathy is writing and Kirk is taking a break…he calls it 'researching'.

A few weeks ago, cc planned a food crawl for us, since I had been away from eating out for a long while.  First stop was in National City.

IMG_0373

Friends of Friends is a locally owned, Hispanic and Filipino inspired eatery, mainly known as a coffee shop, which opened in April of 2024.  It's located just across from Big Ben Specialty Market in National City.  Niederfranks Ice Cream is a block away.
IMG_0373

Friends of Friends roasts their own coffee and makes their own syrups.   Wavy, the restaurant within prepares menu items and bakes their own pastries.  The menu changes for lunch and alcohol is served in late afternoon/evenings.  Each visit can be a different experience.
IMG_0375

We decided to share some breakfast items.
IMG_0374

Regular drip coffee for me (I could choose my own amount of half and half, instead of telling the barista to 'stop' or 'add more', or as I usually request, 'until it's a pretty color'). Very fresh, nice and strong.

IMG_0396

cc chose a cortado which was expertly brewed.  A side of soda water accompanies a proper cortado.
IMG_0396

We were served this McMuff-breakfast ($8) sausage patty in an egg/onion cup, topped with cheese on a toasted English muffin with some chipotle aoili.  Very nice and satisfying by itself.
IMG_0396

The Smiley Cristo ($12)- ham and cheese with raspberry jam on a toasted croissant topped with powdered sugar.  Fancy and quite large.  Great flavors.

I will be returning to try more.  This establishment has a 'Listening Bar" and hosts collaborative events along with even more interesting lunch-ish items.  Really nice.

Gillespie Field Cafe (El Cajon) (again)

mmm-yoso!!! thanks you for stopping by.  Kirk and His Missus are busy with JJ and another vacation which will be an interesting read.  Cathy is writing today.

I wrote about a visit to Gillespie Field Cafe in 2011 and a lot has happened since then (new owners, Covid and just the passage of time).

IMG_0369

The restaurant is next to the Control Tower.

IMG_0312
IMG_0312

It essentially looks the same, with outdoor
IMG_0372

as well as indoor seating, both with views of the airfield.

IMG_0370IMG_0370IMG_0370

The menu is simpler and the adult beverage choices are listed next to the counter.

My brother was going to be driving home (to Las Vegas) and we stopped here for a quick breakfast.

IMG_0303

Without divulging any details, I ordered the 1/2 Biscuits and Gravy from the "Senior Aviator's Menu" ($11.95), which included one egg (poached perfectly) and country potatoes.  The buttermilk biscuit crust had a crumbly/flaky texture, the flavorful (there's black pepper and something else) diced sausage filled gravy (house made) was absorbed by the soft chewy interior.  The crisped potato cubes with bell pepper and onion and were really good.
IMG_0303

My brother chose the Golden French Toast Breakfast ($15.75) with two eggs (scrambled), hash browns and two strips of bacon.  He said the French toast was really good; fluffy inside, slightly crisp exterior and the bacon was a good thickness and nicely crisp.  The eggs were a smooth soft scramble and the hash browns were a nice crisp quality.

IMG_0307Good coffee here!

Road Trip – Silver Lake, Silver Lake Resort Cafe, and Hiking the Reversed Peak Loop (June Lake)

Since I've posted on these places before, I'll just mostly do photos for this one.

After a pretty busy evening, we both slept well. The next morning the Missus was ready to get Her paddleboard out. I had suggested Silver Lake, which always looked quite nice in the morning…plus, well, I knew I could get a decent breakfast nearby while She was out on the lake.

After getting our caffeine fix at The Lift, we headed on out. This time we parked in the Silver Lake parking near the boat ramp and the Missus headed on out. It was as usual during our visits, a lovely day.

IMG_1201

Once the Missus was out on the water, I headed across the street to the Silver Lake Resort, which is the oldest "resort" in the Easter Sierra's; formerly known as Carson's Camp it was established in 1916. It's basically a bunch of cabins and RV parking, but it has a shop and most importantly, Silver Lake Resort Cafe, all of which I've posted on before.

Quaint and charming, it's a great place for an old school breakfast.

IMG_1202

A bit busy on this morning, I found a spot at the counter. Deciding what to get was easy……

IMG_1203

IMG_1205

Nice, hearty breakfast…and heck, that slice of watermelon helps suppress the guilt from enjoying that sausage gravy.

Looking at this photo makes me miss Perry's. I guess I need to get back to Rudford's one of the days!

Silver Lake Resort Cafe
6957 Hwy 158
June Lake, CA 93529

After my filling breakfast I sidled back to the boat ramp to see what was up with the Missus. Lot's of folks fishing and pooches splashing!

IMG_1209

I could see the Missus make a turn and head back to shore.

IMG_1212

While I waited for the Missus a boat was being winched up the ramp. One of the guys was really friendly and he'd done quite well fishing, don't you think?

IMG_7641

Once the Missus got to shore, we stowed Her paddleboard and headed back to our room where we freshened up, before heading right back out to our next stop; the Reversed Peak Loop Trail and 4 Lakes Loop.

IMG_1219

The beginning was pretty steep with a 600 foot climb, but things flatten out after that.

IMG_1220

IMG_1223

You do see a couple of lakes/ponds.

IMG_1224

Though some had already dried up.

IMG_1240

IMG_1237

I enjoyed the rock formations and the view of the mountains.

IMG_1241

IMG_1245

And I learned a new term on this trip. I've been fascinated with the dead trees I've seen on hikes, I found out that they are called "Snags".

IMG_1228

IMG_1263

IMG_1261

The hike was a bit over 3 1/2 miles, with an 800 foot elevation gain. We finished in about 2 hours, not bad. But at this altitude the sun does get to you and there's no shade on the trail.

IMG_1232

I'm glad I had my hearty breakfast. And the Missus had gone paddleboarding, plus we'd gone on a hike….and it wasn't even lunch time yet!

Thanks for stopping by!

We Be OB (Ocean Beach) – Breakfasts with JJ

While grabbing breakfasts with JJ at Daybreak Island Grill, I noticed a very colorful place right across the street and roundabout.

We Be Ob 01

Named "We Be OB"…….looking online, the place served everything from coffee and acai bowls to burgers, hoagies, sandwiches, shakes, smoothies, ice cream, hot dogs and something called a "panini weenie". Nothing fancy mind you, but I read the place was dog friendly, so JJ and I decided to drop by.

We Be Ob 02

There's a small parking lot, but arriving just past the 8am opening time….well, this is OB, the place was empty. This is one of those, you order at the counter places.

We Be Ob 03

The gentleman working was super friendly and welcoming. He was so nice to JJ. I looked over the menu and I just couldn't help myself.

We Be Ob 04

I just had to try a "panini weenie", so I ordered a half, which seemed like a bargain for $7. The gentleman told me to hang with JJ in the back patio which had nice seating, a dart board, corn hole, and other stuffs.

We Be Ob 05

But I chose to sit out front.

We Be Ob 06

And JJ enjoyed watching the people (and pooches) stroll on by.

We Be Ob 07

As for my ahem "weenie"; I got the PA Dutch (Half – $7).

We Be Ob 08

This was basically three lengthwise slices of hot dogs on what, at least to me seemed like a ciabatta like bread. I enjoyed the pickled carrots/veggies and of course the sauerkraut; though I wish there was more of that and less mayo. But it's hard to complain for $7 these days.

We Be Ob 09

I did enjoy the "very OB" vibe of the place, laid-back surfer/beachy. For some reason, I think a place like this would do just fine in Haleiwa…..

While sitting I noticed that the shop is right next to the Bacon Street entrance to Robb Field, close to the San Diego River Bikeway which runs along the San Diego River Estuary. I thought that JJ might enjoy a walk along the the bikeway. So, I returned the following weekend. Same really nice fellow working. This time I noticed that one of the televisions was live streaming some baby eagles from a nest in Big Bear. It was really cute.

We Be Ob 10

Since I had to use the roundabout to get here I got a Bacon Street Roundabout Panini ($9).

We Be Ob 11  We Be Ob 12 This actually had two eggs, bacon, cheese, and a very mild chili. Basically a brushing of "beans", some bacon, mild cheese….if not for the two eggs, it might have been a bit too much bread for me. But this did fill me up.

We Be Ob 13

I had parked in the lot for Robb Field right next to We Be OB and took JJ for a nice walk along the bikeway.

We Be Ob 14

Which he enjoyed.

You know, We Be OB is not fancy…it's just a nice, inviting, laidback place and really fits the Ocean Beach profile, with simple food, some relatively healthy….Acai and smoothies…some not, like the weenie paninis, reasonably priced….part sports bar, part neighborhood hang out.

Chatting with the owner, I found that he used to live in Bay Park, but moved to OB….I guess so "He Be OB"?
