2024 Rose Parade float Road Test 4, breakfast at Tam’s Noodle House (2) (Rowland Heights)

mmm-yoso!!!, a food blog which sometimes posts about reasons for finding the food.  Today is one of those posts; Cathy is writing.

Starting in June, the last Saturday of the month is when Phoenix Decorating Company has road testing of floats for the upcoming Tournament of Roses Rose Parade, which will be held on January 1, 2024.  There are other companies which construct floats as well as six self-constructed floats in the Parade.

IMG_2068 Shriners Hospitals for Children will sponsor this float, "Believe In Tomorrow", keeping with the Theme of the 2024 Parade, "Celebrating A World Of Music, The Universal Language".   Floats are colored in to help with decorating.
IMG_2068
IMG_5340 "A Lovely Day for Hope", presented by the City of Hope hospital system was tested for mechanics and maneuverability with 'weight' on board.

IMG_2068
IMG_2083IMG_2080IMG_2085 The 2024 entry from Trader Joe's is titled "a-one, a-two, a one-two-three-broccoli" and includes Trader Joe (collapsed at the back of the float, now but will be raised for the Parade) conducting a trio of broccoli and various vegetables playing musical instruments.  The beaters in the yogurt cup at the front will produce bubbles along the parade route.  Another beautiful float.

IMG_2068 A new entrant in the Parade for 2024 is from Coding for Veterans.  Unsure about the title.  The center looks like it will have a screen.  The outlines of aircraft are a H-60 and F-35.
IMG_2068 This entry is from Western Asset.  It is backing into the barn.  You can see the Driver of the float (who proceeds down Colorado Boulevard by looking down and following the Rose Colored Line on the street) to the right in the photo and the Spotter (who looks out the front, communicates with the Driver via a headset) to the left.   You can see rectangular vented 'windows' at the fronts of the 'completed' floats, where the Spotters are seated.

///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

It was just before 8 a.m. and The Mister and I headed South then East, looking for breakfast.  We saw a sign visible from the street for a 99 Cent Only Store with a tiny (maybe three foot by two foot) sign on top of it "Tam's Noodle House".  There were cars in the parking lot.  We stopped.

IMG_2109
IMG_2134 Walking inside, we were directed to the last open table. Tam's opens at 8 a.m.

IMG_5341IMG_5341 The breakfast menu was handed to us.
IMG_2118 At the top of the menu, beverages are included!  (Iced beverages are an additional $1.50). The tea was good and strong and kept refilled constantly.

IMG_2125IMG_2125 From the menu, "C"- vermicelli with Satay Beef plus scrambled egg & bun with butter (the price was $12.99, not the $13.99 as on the menu).  Great broth with tender, flavorful beef and non-mushy noodles.  The scrambled eggs were soft and fresh made (I did add some chili crisp to them after a few bites) and the steamed, soft bread was just enough.

IMG_2129IMG_2129 "F"- beef stew with steamed noodle too plus scallop congee ($13.99).  I saw the noodles being rolled in the kitchen when I went to the back toward the restroom.  Fresh, soft, a thin layer…really nice.  That beef stew was excellent, tender and such flavor.  The scallop congee was really a great version.  The scallops were dry/shredded and interspersed throughout each bite.

This was almost too much food (we did have some leftover and it reheated well for a light snack).  We want to try more of the breakfast offerings, but also the fact that the regular menu has more choices, is reasonably priced and the restaurant is open late, makes this a possible place to stop for dinner after we decorate floats in December.

Another Road Test of mechanics and maneuverability for some floats which will be participating in the 2024 Tournament of Roses Rose Parade was held on the last Saturday of August at Phoenix Decorating Company in Irwindale.  We arrived here about 7 a.m.IMG_1611 The Entry for Rotary International, "Clean Water, The Music of Life" was being tested with weight (people) onboard.  You can see a rectangular slot at the front end of the 'keyboard'-that is where the 'Spotter' for the float will be watching for traffic and hazards during the parade.  He or she will be communicating with the driver, who only looks down and follows the 'Rose Colored Line' painted on the street.
IMG_1598 The entry by the City of Alhambra, "Celebrating the Year of the Dragon"was tested in its full open position.
IMG_1605IMG_1608 But every float has a maximum height and width it must be able to collapse down to so it can proceed along the Parade Route.  The doorway of the decorating barn is that maximum size.

IMG_1612 "Chimes of Liberty Protecting Our Future"  is the 2024 entry by the Fraternal Order of Elks, a Service Organization.
IMG_1616IMG_1616IMG_1616IMG_1616 This detailed float will certainly be an eye catcher! You might notice the hands are missing from the Fife and Drum Corps- the faces as well as the hand flesh tones are being decorated with various spice blends/mixes by professionals (not us volunteers).
IMG_1585 Lutheran Hour Ministries entry, "Make A Joyful Noise Unto The Lord" passed its third mechanics and maneuverability test and is ready to be decorated beginning on December 2.  You can see the rectangular slot for the 'Spotter' in this photo.

/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Following taking photos, The Mister and I headed South on Irwindale Avenue, (passing Portos) and He started looking for Dim Sum via his phone.  All That 'N Dim Sum opened at 8 a.m.!  Siri directed us.  It wasn't very far past the multiple places cc and I visited last year following the 2023 Rose Parade Road Test #2.

IMG_1636
IMG_4978IMG_1646 Step inside, order and pay.  We were directed to a table and soon enough, our orders were delivered.
IMG_1652IMG_1668 Pretty much a standard first time order for us: Har Gow ($3.99), Shumai ($3.99), Crescent dumplings ($3.59) and egg tarts ($3.59) were brought out first.  Fresh and warm, great flavors.IMG_1661IMG_1670 The soup dumplings ($7.99) took a little longer and were steaming hot.  (I took the photo before asking for a spoon, but there was no leakage) quite a bit of soup and a thin dumpling skin). Tasty.

IMG_1650 There were utensils in the drawer under the tabletop-but no spoons. IMG_1648 Tea was $1 each (so, one green and one oolong) and you could get more hot (as well as chilled) water at the counter.

2024 Rose Parade Float Road Test #2 and breakfast at Ocean Bo (El Monte) plus

Thanks for stopping to read mmm-yoso!!!, this blog about food.  Cathy is writing today because she has a post about food (and some other things) while Kirk is busy with work.

This past Saturday had us waking at 4, leaving at 5 and getting to Irwindale at 7; the start of what we thought would be an efficient morning.

2024 Rose Parade Float Road Test #1

A few floats were being tested for mechanics and maneuverability.IMG_0953 The Oddfellows and Rebekahs float, "All You Need is Love", passed with flying colors!  I can't wait to see which natural materials are used to decorate the unicorns.IMG_0965 The Kiwanis 2024 float, "Serving in Harmony" passed its third road test, with people (weight) on board and will be ready too decorate with 'dry' materials and glue on the first Saturday in December.  You can volunteer to decorate by signing up HERE

IMG_0965 The Lions Clubs International float, "Changing the World Through Music" has a great rendering of the Parade theme (Celebrating A World of Music; The Universal Language) and float title.
IMG_0966
The Royal Court float was also tested; seven members will be seated here as part of their year long reign of community service.IMG_0975 Stored inside the float barn, the Elks Clubs float with headless and handless Fife and Drum Corps is painted in (usually human 'skin' decorating, done with various spices, is separately worked on and I suspect that is why the heads and hands are not attached).
IMG_0975 The Petal Pushers and Lutheran Hour Ministries entry, "Make a Joyful Noise Unto the Lord" has been further painted in.
IMG_0975
The Rotary International entry, "Clean Water, the Music of Life" with the ducks and umbrellas looks to be a winner.  It's cute and conveys the message of the Parade and of Rotary.
///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Being efficient, we were on the road South and got to Portos before 8 a.m..

IMG_0988
IMG_1052IMG_1052IMG_1052IMG_1052
Plenty of parking, no lines, a quick pick up of the seasonal peach tart, a blueberry croissant, cranberry orange scone, cheese roll, walnut raisin bread and a Cuban quesadilla (pretty much another form of cheesecake).

//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
IMG_0999
We started on the 10 West, toward El Monte, took an exit and I made a quick stop upon seeing this signage.
IMG_0992IMG_0991
The menu was outside, inside and at the counter.
IMG_0992IMG_0992
We ordered #1, #3 and #7 (Shrimp Har Gow, Shrimp Shiu Mai and bean curd wrapped meat) ($18 total) and put the bag in the car.  It would be a late lunch.
IMG_1030IMG_1030IMG_1030
Very good, fresh, quite large pieces.  Glad we stopped.

//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

IMG_1002 Since it was early, and we wanted Dim Sum,  we we decided to try Ocean Bo again
IMG_1009IMG_1009
The menu is the same, prices slightly higher by 30¢ ($4.59) than in October.

IMG_1011 The drill was the same; check off your order on the menu and everything is brought out at once.  We knew what was in the car so ordered different things here. IMG_1015IMG_1015IMG_1015IMG_1015IMG_1015

Steamed Fun Gor, Ham Sui Gok, Shrimp and Chive dumpling, Seafood Gow and baked egg tart (each $4.59).  Hot tea was $1.80 each and the pot was constantly kept refilled.
IMG_1022
Cross sections; different skins on each item, everything very fresh and very efficient service.  A great place.

Even though we were done at 9:29 a.m. and thought we would get home quickly, that didn't happen.  We drove over to the 15 and ended up getting in at 12:45.  Crazy traffic! Still a nice day.

Toulouse – Marche Victor Hugo (Again), Lunch at Restaurant Attila, Criollo Chocolatier, a Walk Along Canal de Brienne, and Other Stuffs

We started our last day in Toulouse by taking a short walk in the area.

IMG_3634
IMG_3634

We had really enjoyed Toulouse, there's a down to earth, relaxed vibe to the place. We spent the morning wandering about.

Nearing 11, we walked on over to the huge March Victor Hugo, which I covered in an earlier post.

IMG_3642

We ended up getting some stuffs for a nice self catering dinner for our last evening in the city.

We then headed upstairs where the restaurants are located. Man, the passageway is pretty cramped.

IMG_3643

We settled on a seafood place named Restaurant Attila. I really wanted to have some Coques (Cockles) and Langoustines.

IMG_3647

Of course there's a plat du jour and other lunch specials as well.

IMG_3646

We were guided to our table where we placed our order. The seafood in the marche looked wonderful, so we were quite excited about this meal.

First up was the Salade de Coques Persillade (10€ – $11/US).

IMG_3649

The cockles were prepped well, no gritty bits. I was surprised at how tender these were, with a nice hint of savory-sweetness. Strangely, I expected more of a briny flavor, but these had a nice butteriness to them. The greens and such was fine, but those cockles were definitely the star.

The Langoustine with Aioli (13€) was a disappointment.

IMG_3653

The langoustine were over cooked and really dry and even though it was supposedly cooked with a court bullion the flavor was lacking.

Last up were the Huitres ( 9 for 15€ – $16.50/US). These were from Marennes, an area famous for their oysters. These really delivered.

IMG_3650

Pleasantly briny with a wonderful clean finish! Definitely a winnah!

Restaurant Attila (in Marche Victor Hugo)
5 Place Victor Hugo
31000 Toulouse, France

After lunch, we headed downstairs.

IMG_3656
IMG_3656  IMG_3659 And just wandered around. I ended up buying more Tarbais beans in the shop/deli above….yep, 35€ a kilo and I bought another half kilo.

After which we headed back to the chocolate shop that the Missus had enjoyed earlier named Criollo Chocolatier.

IMG_3658

Man, the place was humming!

IMG_3637

The pieces here are sold by weight and the Missus bought a good sized box of it.

IMG_5136

Of there's any reason for us to return to Toulouse, it's so the Missus can restock on chocolate from here.

Criollo Chocolatier Toulouse Victor Hugo
23 Place Victor Hugo
31000 Toulouse, France

We then headed back to the hotel and started doing some packing.

After which, we decided to go on another walk. I picked out the Canal de Brienne area. The canal which connects to the Garonne is a short 1.6 kilometers in length, but tree lined and quite peaceful. You totally forget you're in the middle of a large city.

IMG_3660

Apparently, that building above was an old tobacco factory, which now houses a building the university.

IMG_3666
IMG_3666

It was a lovely walk and fun to see a different part of Toulouse.

IMG_3669

We walked back to our room and just relaxed and then had dinner. Later that evening, we heard singing and chanting. Looking out the window we noticed a endless line of folks, waving the Moroccan flag. Apparently, Morocco had just beaten Belgium in a World Cup match. We decided to head on down to the square. It was a fun parade, one of joy and celebration, peaceful without any antics….a refreshing scene to be sure!

A couple of groups had even set-up around the perimeter of the Christmas Market and were singing and dancing.

IMG_3697

We decided to head into the Christmas Market.

IMG_3696

To get some Vin Chaud of course!

IMG_3689

Egad! I've posted on Vin Chaud before, we have a kind hate-love-hate relationship with this warm mulled wine drink. We really don't care for the taste….but we love that it really puts you in the holiday spirit.

IMG_3688

And perhaps we're developing a (bad) taste for this????

Warm mulled wine in our bellies, we slept soundly, got up early and finished packing. We then took the metro to Toulouse Matabiau. We were a bit early and crossed the street for some coffee.

IMG_3703

Before catching our train to our final stop on this month long journey.

IMG_3701

We had enjoyed our time in "La Vie en Rose", the Pink City – Toulouse. But next we were spending most of two weeks in….well you know where, right?

Thanks for stopping by!

Get Out There! 2023 San Diego County Fair (Part 2; it’s happening now)

Thank you for stopping to read mmm-yoso!!!, this food blog.  Cathy is writing the post at the start of July.

Link to Part one: Before the Fair opens

The San Diego County Fair has been in full swing since June 7 and will end with a spectacular fireworks display on July 4.  There is still time to "Get Out There" and see what the 2023 theme has in store for you.  Not all of the activities are here, just a few highlights, and, of course some of the unique Fair foods.

IMG_9399 When you park for free at Torrey Pines High School, the transportation might take you around the back side of the Fairgrounds and you can see the rides from a different viewpoint as well as where the workers live during the Fair.  It's been "June Gloom" weather for most of the mornings near the coast.
IMG_4155IMG_4155IMG_4155IMG_4155 The Paul Ecke, Jr. Garden Show has many displays decorated with the theme.
IMG_0128IMG_0128 The Theme Exhibit Hall (to the right when you walk in the main entrance) is very informative regarding San Diego County and our parks and recreation areas.
IMG_9425
IMG_9427IMG_9427IMG_4154IMG_9427IMG_9440
IMG_9440IMG_0155IMG_0155IMG_0155IMG_9440
IMG_9440IMG_9440  IMG_4242IMG_4242IMG_4242IMG_4242

IMG_9437 IMG_9439 This year, we were going to try to order more unique food choices and mostly succeeded.  Can't get Indian Fry Bread anywhere in the County.  This garlic butter parmesan bread was warm/fresh made and so satisfying.

IMG_0208IMG_0208IMG_0208 The Gems and Minerals exhibit is beautiful and informative.

IMG_9445 IMG_9467 We did want something fried, yet protein/sort of healthy and so Calamari and fries was our choice.
IMG_4152IMG_9468 To make that meal a bit healthier, I walked across the way and ordered this (really great) peanut infused slaw to accompany.

IMG_0186IMG_0186IMG_4248 Design in Wood always has beautiful entries.
IMG_0151IMG_0154IMG_0157 On another visit, our quest for 'semi healthy/fried protein' had us ordering this 'Fair Special' from Chicken Charlie's (onion rings, fried zucchini and chicken strips) along with a delightful strawberry lemonade from Stuffie's, just across the way.
IMG_0164IMG_0164IMG_0164 The Fine Art entries are always mesmerizing.

IMG_9480 IMG_9491 We found a few new booths (since both the Cream Puffs and the Gingerbread House were gone).  This was a blueberry pie in a cone from In Your Face Pies.  The blueberry filling was warm and this was a good size portion.
IMG_0144IMG_0144IMG_0144 There was a spinning demonstration in the California Grown barn along with instructive animal exhibits.
IMG_0171IMG_4219 We've seen photos of Hawaiian Honey Cones on various places online and wanted to try.  The cones are produced in Hawaii of organic corn cane (not sugar cane).   The cone tastes like … and has the texture of … think Cheetoes without the cheese with a definite hint of honey.  The ice cream filling is a vanilla Hokkaido style, made with milk from Hokkaido.  Unique and very good; smooth, creamy, a distinct milk flavor with subtle vanilla. This was fun and quality and what we expect of Fair foods.

IMG_9456IMG_9456IMG_4225IMG_9456
IMG_4224IMG_8990IMG_8990 The Home ArtsHome and Hobby, Home Made section of the Fair had such great entries this year.
IMG_0258 We had to get a cherry lime Icee.  The flavors remind us of when we were dating and used to share a cherry-lime rickey at Drakes.
IMG_4220 The sights and sounds are everywhere!

I hope you can get to the San Diego County Fair and enjoy the start of summer!  Purchase tickets and parking online before you go.  Cash and cards can be used inside the Fairgrounds. Website

2024 Rose Parade Road Test #1 and breakfast from Tokyo Central (West Covina)

mmm-yoso!!! is a blog about food and sometimes Kirk or Cathy write about how the acquisition of a meal or snacks came to be.  This is one of those posts.

Yes, it's the time of year when the January 1 Tournament of Roses Rose Parade is becoming real.

IMG_4173 The Logo, Theme (Celebrating A World of Music, The Universal Language) and President (Alex Aghajanian) of the 2024 Tournament of Roses were announced in January (yes, the Rose Bowl Football Game is the culmination of the Tournament) and preparations for the 135th Rose Parade began.

Designs for floats, centering on the theme, were submitted, approved and construction began.  On Saturday, road tests for mechanics and maneuverability of eight floats were conducted at Phoenix Decorating Company in Irwindale. IMG_4171 The artist rendition of Lions Clubs International entry, "Changing The World Through Music" has 'come to life'.
IMG_9980 It's looking very much like the rendition and will have to be tested again, with 'weight' (people) on board.  Then it will be ready for decorating, since it is colored in.  Colors help the volunteer decorators and also help if there might be rain and some of the natural items used to cover (all visible portions of) the float succumb to the elements.
IMG_4171IMG_9977 The 2024 Rotary International entry, "Clean Water-The Music of Life" is still in its basic rebar and wire structure.  I can see umbrellas and the cuteness of this float, with the design supporting one the many areas of focus that Rotary serves internationally.

IMG_4171IMG_9953 The Petal Pushers and Lutheran Hour Ministries will have its 73rd entry in the Rose Parade in 2024, "Make A Joyful Noise Unto The Lord".  It is the only Christian Themed float in the Parade.

IMG_4171IMG_9959 Oddfellows and Rebekahs will be entering this cute, unicorn design, "All We Need Is Love".  Did you know that each float plays music along the route?  Well, we know the song that will be played on this float!
IMG_9985 Kiwanis International is entering "Serving in Harmony", an old fashioned look some long past symbols of music and harmony (Nipper! His Master's Voice! and a Player Piano with a metronomic roll).
IMG_9966 IMG_9970The Elks Clubs have another patriotic entry this year.  I can see a Fife and Drum Corps and the back of the float looks like fireworks.
IMG_9966 The City of Alhambra is entering this dragon-esque float.
IMG_9966Here is the base for what will most likely be another magnificent float, entered by Trader Joe's.

////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

On to the food portion of this post. We started driving South, then East.  Then we saw signage.

IMG_0064 IMG_4175 It looks like a super version of Tokyo Central that we have in the Marukai Complex in San Diego; all under one roof.
IMG_0034IMG_0034IMG_0034IMG_0034IMG_0034IMG_0034

IMG_0024It was before 9 a.m.-breakfast time. IMG_4177 We had to.
IMG_4178IMG_4178 IMG_0029 We made our selections, purchased a few other items, paid and found a seat at the front of the store.
IMG_0047
IMG_4182IMG_0020There is a water fountain available, but we had purchased this 2 liter bottle of Jasmine tea (on sale)IMG_0047 IMG_0055 Our selections from the Hot Buffet serving trays: Vegetable Croquette, Cheese Tonkatsu, four Fried shrimp, two pieces of Teriyaki Chicken and one 'umami pork rib'.  (Total bill for hot food was $14.58)

Of course everything was absolutely fresh and wonderful. It's good to know we can stop here.

Tokyo Central 1420 S. Azusa Ave West Covina Opens 8 a.m. daily

///////////////////////////////////////

For those of you wondering, of course we had to stop at Portos; it's only six miles directly South of Phoenix Decorating.
IMG_9993IMG_9993IMG_9993IMG_9993IMG_9993IMG_9993We purchased a loaf of Walnut Raisin bread, and new items- an iced ube matcha tea drink and carrot cake slice.  Quite excellent new items.

Get Out There! The 2023 San Diego County Fair (Part one: before opening)

mmm-yoso!!!, a food blog, is being written by Cathy today.

Yes, it's that time of the year.  In two days, the 2023 San Diego County Fair opens.IMG_9157 The opening gate looks a little different, going with the theme:
IMG_4010 'Explore the outdoors and get s'more of what life has to offer' is the idea behind the simple entrance decor.
IMG_9243 The Theme building, to the right when you walk in, has a friendly looking entrance.
IMG_9161 IMG_9240 IMG_9236 IMG_9171
IMG_9172

IMG_9163 Not much was set up as of last Wednesday.  The rides and food booths had been at the Los Angeles County Fair during most of May until Memorial Day and all had been packing up for the move to San Diego.

The only 'special food' for this Fair that I have seen is Chicken Charlie's is selling a 'deep fried s'mores on a stick' (batter dipped and fried marshmallows topped with chocolate sauce and graham cracker crumbs).

IMG_9022 Home Made (formerly Home and Hobby, formerly Home Arts) was setting up.
IMG_8965 Displays are finalized after judging, so as to focus on the Competition participants and winners.
IMG_9021 IMG_9217 IMG_9224 IMG_9226 IMG_9206

Collections, needle arts, preserved foods, baked goods and cake decorating will all have ribbons displayed when you get to the Fair.

Home Arts and animal auctions are why we have County Fairs; farmers and their families proudly showed off the fruits of their year of labor.

IMG_4019 2023 San Diego County Fair June 7-July 4.  Closed Monday and Tuesdays in June. Website (tickets and parking are cashless and available online)

///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Last year, I only wrote one post about the County Fair.

IMG_4033
IMG_1496 The Theme of "Heroes Reunite" was a continuation of the canceled 2020 Fair with the "Heroes Unite" theme.
IMG_1632IMG_1432IMG_1450
IMG_1435

Decor around the Fairgrounds had capes and various heroes depicted.

There was something The Mister and I noticed when we attended on a Thursday.

IMG_1538  IMG_1675 IMG_1528 IMG_1511 IMG_1497

IMG_1524 It turns out that every booth on Thursday had a $3 special.  There were pieces of paper, most handwritten, with a $3 Thursday special listed and taped to the booth behind the cash register.  There was nothing written on the Website nor on the Daily Fair Events handouts listing this pricing. I highly suspect the same will be happening on Thursdays during the Fair this year and will update asap. If you notice, most of the $3 specials are small (battered veggies, mini cream puffs, mini Dole Whip, fried pineapple and fried Oreos), but that fried pineapple from Chicken Charlie's was the whole $9 item! I hope that remains the Thursday special. (Remember there are five Chicken Charlies booths; each had a different special).

IMG_1513 IMG_1659  IMG_4015 IMG_4016 Of course, we also purchased our 'regular' items, which included fried pickles, grilled vegetables, the artichoke sandwich and an apple tower.

In the meantime, I hope you can Get Out There and enjoy the San Diego County Fair!

2023 Rose Parade Floatfest and Portos for lunch

mmm-yoso!!! is a food blog.  Sometimes the post explains why we got to the food.  Today is one of those days; Cathy is writing.

D362EEC3-6FBB-4616-A062-FFFF4542398A The 2023 Tournament of Roses with the theme "Turning The Corner" has concluded.  The Rose Parade was held on January 2 (the Parade is never on a Sunday; the first parades in the 1800s had floats that were horses pulling carriages and horses were needed for church on Sunday; the tradition stands).  Following the Parade, the floats line up at the end of the five mile Parade route, end to end, and are displayed after the Parade and the next day.  This year, I drove up with my friend, cc (The Mister had to stay home).  It had rained overnight.

95B5E933-5BA3-49B6-9DB9-272B77E80E55 The Sweepstakes Award, for the most beautiful entry encompassing float design, floral presentation and entertainment, went to the float sponsored by Donate Life, "Lifting Each Other Up".   A spectacular asian street dragon is the centerpiece of the float.  There were 44 memorial floragraphs representing those who had given the gift of life.  Those were removed before the rain, so the families could have a memory.

Now, it is time to start planning for 2024.  Yesterday, the President of the 2024 Parade, Alex Aghajanian, was introduced and he introduced the Theme and logo of the 2024 Rose Parade:

9232264C-9D0F-45EE-868A-D14EC2A3A4C2 "Celebrating a World of Music: The Universal Language".   The float designs are being submitted and construction will begin.  As an aside, each float always has recorded music while it drives down the Parade Route.  This theme will have the floats designed and coordinated with the music.  It should be fun.

32217778-9352-4340-B23E-4EC4F910048E cc was looking forward to going to Portos after our morning of walking.

48910054-B9CD-43A9-9E5B-D369960E086B Traditional celebratory sweets to celebrate Three Kings Day were for sale; however the Rosca de Reyes was already sold out.  We each purchased a Galette des Rois.

26AEEAA5-1653-4F27-AB22-09E8F7D88E63 There were no Roscas, but the seasonal Rosquitas, a sweet bread topped with dried, candied fruits made some nice bites for us this year.

2023 Rose Parade Float Road Test #5, Breakfast at Portos and Dim Sum King

mmm-yoso!!! is being written by Cathy today.  This blog is about food as well as reasons leading to the food.

On the last Saturday of October, The Mister and I drove up to Irwindale to observe the fifth road test of 2023 Tournament of Roses Rose Parade floats.

On this day only a few floats were being tested for mechanics and maneuverability.
284C9124-CE5A-45F2-865D-CBF1EC225F8B Here is the Elks (a fraternal organization) 2023 Rose Parade entry, which needs to collapse to go along the Parade Route.  The size of the door leading to the Phoenix Decorating Barn is the exact maximum height and width to allow passage.
6CAA2CC9-1BE6-48D6-BF47-88572D047DBE It is a magnificent float when fully expanded.
284C9124-CE5A-45F2-865D-CBF1EC225F8B Fezzy Bear, the Shriners Hospitals for Children mascot, and their 2023 float, is still in its rebar stage.
B66B602C-AED2-4AA3-848B-AE1C69E50A32 Apparently this float will be highlighting the annual Shriners Golf Tournament fundraiser.

95A41D47-CB20-43F3-B66B-42B7A1BBD28B The Lions Clubs International float, "Bridging the World Through Service" was tested with weight (people) onboard for the mechanics and maneuverability as well as the ability to exit the float within 45 seconds in case of a fire.

All in all, a short day.  So, we headed out to look for breakfast.

2E7D0D80-B2E7-40C6-AFC4-85F0561261C8 It is so easy to get to the West Covina Portos (six miles South on the same road as the decorating barn).
2E7D0D80-B2E7-40C6-AFC4-85F0561261C8 Getting here before 8 a.m., there are no crowds.
74760763-968A-4E48-89D9-12BFDEA38844 We ordered a medianoche (Midnight) sandwich ($7.19); a Cubano (pork, ham, Swiss, pickles and a mustard/mayonnaise dressing) on a sweet, dark bread (instead of a lighter Cuban roll).
74760763-968A-4E48-89D9-12BFDEA38844 Also a ham and cheese omelette sandwich ($5.95) (on a fresh, buttery croissant).A6CD4FCF-033F-43D5-9CDA-FDA41B2AC70A Of course, I had to get a loaf of bread (walnut raisin ($4.15)).

Of course, some of these items were shared with friends.  Portos Bakery, many locations, Website

Then I remembered our breakfast after the Fourth Road test and wanted dim sum!

Once again, The Mister was navigating via his phone, searching for "Dim Sum".  Soon we were here.
4A2E2BC8-DA06-47FD-8BF6-588499596275 There is no eating area, which is fine since we were full and heading home.
4A2E2BC8-DA06-47FD-8BF6-588499596275Quite unassuming and very popular, this was a perfect place to pick up some Dim Sum to go.

2023 Rose Parade Float Road Test #4, breakfast at Ocean Bo (El Monte)

The last Saturday in September had The Mister and I wide awake and driving North on I-5 before 5 a.m..  There were several traffic problems mentioned on the radio and we cut back across the 78 to I-15 and took a different-than-usual route to Irwindale and Phoenix Decorating Company, arriving at about 7:15.  Floats were on the street and being tested for mechanics and maneuverability.

FA14ADCC-546B-4A2F-BE5E-24E547DA772D The final float of the parade 'announces' the Rose Bowl football game which will start four hours after the Rose Parade ends  (on January 2, 2023, because there is never a Parade or Game on a Sunday).
75800233-5C0A-4004-931E-C33DBB685159Here is the same float on December 31 last year; it is not judged but always freshly decorated.
FA1AB2B5-AFA2-43F7-A38B-DBCE92926311 D8182395-3572-43DD-83EE-D8EC299264CE The Mutual of Omaha Wild Kingdom float, "Protecting The Wild" was being tested.  You can see the tree in the back of the float 'collapses' to be able to fit down the Parade route. (See how other  floats collapse in the Road Test #3 post).

C4697FA3-4C37-4D4C-9E7B-7A33CDA5C36B Here is the artist rendering of the Mutual of Omaha float.

93655C2B-3AEA-4682-8E5D-D00470A4D863 In the front is the

skeleton/rebar version of the Elks 2023 entry to the Parade.  It is backing into the barn, to the right (you can see the driver of this float, if you enlarge the photo-he is past the middle, to the far right).  You can also see the Wild Kingdom float (with the trees in position) and the Royal Court float behind this Elks float. 250E53E2-0070-4D88-928C-BAB04C209150(Royal Court float being decorated on December 31)

12F8F24B-FA99-4AF4-8F6E-3077357EEB63 The Trader Joe's 2023 entry is a multi-piece float.
03DF6D1E-8D11-420D-877E-44DA2395B344 The front appears to be a 'chopper' motorcycle.
03DF6D1E-8D11-420D-877E-44DA2395B344 The attached second part of the float is a pirate ship; I see the ships wheel, collapsed sail, giant pelican, a banana and a collapsed palm tree.  It will be interesting to see the progress.

On October 13, Former Arizona Congresswoman Gabby Giffords was announced as the Grand Marshal of the 2023 Rose Parade.  The theme of the parade, "Turning the Corner", epitomizes Gabby's remarkable recovery from traumatic injuries.

//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

On to the food portion of this post.  I was not craving a 'traditional' breakfast.  Since The Mister is a navigator, I told him to type in "Dim Sum" on his phone and direct me. C738A883-945F-4613-B220-B8DDC70BA15C Soon, we were in El Monte, parked, walked in and were able to get a table right away.
C738A883-945F-4613-B220-B8DDC70BA15C The other entrance door lead to the steam trays and take out area of the restaurant.
C7560CBA-F964-461F-95FB-5F336838F611C7560CBA-F964-461F-95FB-5F336838F611 Each table had a menu and a pen; we ordered.  Soon, everything was brought out to our table at the same time.
BCBAAE80-8E6A-4C78-B249-FC75CE06B1DA I was not the only person taking photos of food.
4EC0F8AE-A44C-4268-920F-8F2FCF8B71BE The salted chicken porridge ($6.89) was wonderful with a great chicken stock base; you can tell the porridge had been simmering a long time.  The chopped pieces of bone-in chicken were plentiful.
4EC0F8AE-A44C-4268-920F-8F2FCF8B71BE Pork Shiu Mai ($4.29) were quite large, very well flavored (didn't need additional soy nor chili sauce). In addition to the chopped pork and shrimp, the filling had crispy water chestnuts, carrot and mushroom.
4EC0F8AE-A44C-4268-920F-8F2FCF8B71BE The Seafood Gow ($4.29) were particularly good.  The crisp, pan fried dumpling, filled with pieces of fish, shrimp and crab as well as (spinach?) greens; turned out to be our favorite bite of the morning.
4EC0F8AE-A44C-4268-920F-8F2FCF8B71BE The shrimp rice rolls ($5.39) were each filled with two plump, large, flavorful shrimp.  The rice noodles and sauce complimented each bite in flavor and texture.
4EC0F8AE-A44C-4268-920F-8F2FCF8B71BE The shrimp Har Gow ($4.29), steamed in tapioca flour wrappers.  Filled with very plump, large shrimp, this 'staple' of Dim Sum restaurants was a delightful treat.
4EC0F8AE-A44C-4268-920F-8F2FCF8B71BE The baked egg tart ($4.29) was a perfect ending to the meal.  The still warm and eggy custard inside the multi-layered Chinese puff pastry (less oily/more flour-y than traditional puff pastry) was just so perfect.
