Saturday Stuffs: Fu An Restaurant opening on Convoy, I-Sushi replaces Walmido

Just a couple of quick things for a quiet Saturday.

Fu An Restaurant opening on Convoy:

07272013 013

07272013 014

Eater San Diego has been on top of this since BBQ Chicken closed. So now there's a sign, I heard the cuisine is……yes…..yet another Sichuan restaurant. I was told the owners are from LA, so hopefully they won't be cooking from the same playbook as other places in San Diego. I'm hopeful this will be much better than the last new Sichuan restaurant.

The address is:

San Diego, CA 92111

I-Sushi replaces Walmido:

07272013 015

07272013 016It was "Yummy Yummy" who first mentioned this to me. This place quietly replaced Walmido a few weeks back. I asked if they still do the whole halibut sashimi and was told yes, except it no longer comes with all the side dishes.

Well, at least I get the answer to question, "U Sushi?"

Saturday Stuffs: What going on with the old Zion Marketplace (U Mart?), where Voltero’s is moving to. Blue Korea House? I hadn’t even noticed. how I pack for 3 weeks of travel and a Xiang Chun Ya update.

Here's a far ranging edition of Saturday Stuffs for you.

U Mart? What's U Mart?:

I had been wondering what was happening with the old Zion Marketplace site. I don't recall seeing some of the old food court shops in the new Zion and thought perhaps they were hold-outs? So imagine my surprise when I drove past that location and saw this:

IMG_1056

No, there weren't any businesses in the empty shell of a location, but what was U Mart? After calling around a bit, the best info I could find was that the folks behind First Korean Market will be running this place. Not sure why "U Mart" for a Korean Market….but I guess "K Mart" is already taken, right?

Where Voltero's is popping up:

Not sure if you folks have noticed, but that strip mall on Balboa where Einstein Bagels used to be is going to become a Chipotle and a Five Guys. I was wondering what happened to Voltero's? I did a post on the cheeseseals there, during my cheesesteak round-up that started in 2010. Voltero's is pretty much your generic neighborhood pizza joint, nothing amazing, but they had a pretty loyal following, and if I recall were owned by local folks.

So I was fairly pleased to see this sign when I ate at Szechuan Chef.

It's now Blue Korea House:

Did you even notice?

07132013 008

Haven't been here in over a decade, as I didn't care for the food. An acquaintance of mine used to call this "Baegin-gyp", 'nuff said.

Anyone eat here since the change?

What I wear for three weeks of travel:

05152013 010"David" emailed me about my comment on only taking about 6-7 kilos in a carry-on for over three weeks of travel. He asked how much did I really pack….well, other than what I wore, that was it. If we didn't have a couple of more formal dinners, I'd have lost the two dress shirts. I was actually going to take a jacket, but didn't in the end. I use Eagle Creek packing cubes and a packing folder. I went for it and actually used a $30 Campmor Essential Carry-On, which weighs about half a pound. The packing folder gave the rather floppy bag structure and I had no problems with the bag, nor laundry either. What about wrinkles? A spritz from a spray bottle, a good shake, and a steamy bathroom does wonders…irons are perfectly fine as well of course. I did end up buying a "hoodie" from H&M, which are everywhere in Europe for about 10 Euros.

I'm now sold on One Bag Travel….until I have to go home or visit relatives…you know, the "gifts" thing, right?

The Missus favorite new "pet" – Xiang Chun Ya:

07132013 024

One of the dishes the missed most by the Missus is eggs with shoots from the Xiang Chun Ya, the Chinese Toon tree. This was one of Her favorites growing up and was one of the first things She wanted to eat when we visited QingDao.

We finally got a plant this year….thank "SL"! Sadly, SH left the tree in her hot car that day and it looked dead. But, after transplanting and some TLC, shoots are coming out which has the Missus going nuts…..you see, it's the tender shoots of this plant which are used for scrambled eggs:

Vacation 2010 01 550

The Missus has told me that She's going to pick these shoots already and buy some eggs…I said, "based on the size of these, it better be quail eggs….."

I also told Da Boyz that they aren't Her favorites anymore….they've been replaced by a tree!

07132013 029

Seriously, it's about time we actually used the space in the backyard to grow some stuff.

Anyway, I hope everyone's having a great weekend!

A buncha’ lunches at Do Re Mi House 8 years later……

** Do Re Mi House has closed

Man, it's been almost 8 years and maybe three owners since I first did a post back in 2005. By the time I did an update in 2009, I believe the place had changed hands, though the food was about the same. Some time after that I returned and really had an awful lunch, after which Do Re Mi went "no ami",  just kinda slipping my mind. Over the last year, folks have been recommending Do Re Mi House which had left me wondering; was it that much better, or had it just returned to being decent food for a good value…..nothing wrong with that at all. Curiosity piqued, and my office having moved to a location fairly close by, there really was no excuse for not returning.

Do Re Mi Rev 01

The sign had been refreshed and I believe the divider removed froDo Re Mi Rev 02m the back of the restaurant along with the large, almost communal table in the rear. It looks a bit cleaner for some reason.

Of ocurse prices have gone up….hey, it's been 8 years. The base prices here are no longer $5.99, it's $7.99, with a higher range of $12.99 for "combos". Still, this isn't too bad. That said, there's a bit more panchan then I recalled….the usual suspects.

Do Re Mi Rev 03

The flavor and basic quality varied during each visit. My first visit was the best…..

Do Re Mi Rev 04

Do Re Mi Rev 05

The worst was on my last visit where the baechu kimchi, your basic, standard issue napa cabbage kimchi tasted like it hadn't been marinated long enough, the fishcake was dry as cardboard, and sadly, one of my favorites, and something the "old" Do Re Mi House did so well, the gamja jorim, the simmered potatoes were hard and undercooked. Honestly, I thought these were apples when they hit the table.

As for the free soup……

Do Re Mi Rev 06a

Well….it's free, though they might as well serve you hot water. Man, I've had so many bad bowls of this stuff recently, I wish they'd just stop already.

On my first visit, I went with the Bulgogi lunch ($7.99), which looked perfectly fine.

Do Re Mi Rev 06

This wasn't nearly as sweet as I recalled, though the meat was on the dry side. Overall, it wasn't a bad deal for $7.99 (which includes a drink). Standard issue mandu, a green salad, and seaweed salad accompanied everything. Oh, and I kept forgetting to take a photo of the teacup of Su Jung Gwa, the cinnamon tea/drink that comes at the end, a bit too sweet for me.

A week or so later I decided to check in at Do Re Mi again.

Do Re Mi Rev 07

Do Re Mi Rev 08It was a pretty hot day, but I was quite hungry. I went with one of their combos where you can get either Kimchi Chigae (you gotta be kidding, not on this day), or Bi Bim Naengmyun and a protein ($12.99).

The Naengmyun was pretty stretchy, almost too hard and elastic. The flavor was pretty mild, I didn't find it very spicy as it needed a good dose of vinegar and hot sauce, but it wasn't bad overall.

I got the Daeji Bulgogi, the spicy pork as my protein. The old Do Re Mi really made a nice version of this…..this latest incarnation not so much as it was pretty bland. The portion size was quite generous though.

Oh yes, it would be a good idea to wear a darker colored shirt when eating the stretchy naegmyun. Otherwise you'll take the chance of returning to the office with a bunch of red specks on it.

I recently decided to return and have yet another lunch here. The kalbi during previous regimes had not been that great. I wondered how it was now….so I ordered the Galbi lunch ($9.99).

Do Re Mi Rev 09

Do Re Mi Rev 10

This was better than what I'd had here before. My previous experiences with kalbi here had been enduring thin, tough, cross-cut ribs. This was still LA Kalbi and I didn't expect anything different, but the cut was thicker and the grade a bit better. The flavor was decent, your basic kalbi, it was still a bit chewy, but not bad at all.

What disappointed was the panchan on this visit.

To me, Do Re Mi delivers a decent value. It's nothing fancy, but will do the job for lunch. The woman running the place can be a bit surly at first, but after I'd been here a couple of times, she's started….well maybe not smiling, but being a lot more friendly with me.

Do Re Mi Rev 11

So for all those folks who told me I had to return….did I miss anything? Maybe dinner?

Gala Chicken – The new K(orean) F(ried) C(hicken) stand in Zion Market opens

**** Zion Market has moved and Gala did not make the move with the market

The item that seems to have gotten the most attention on my recent Saturday Stuffs post was the closing of BBQ Chicken. I received a couple of emails about it. I guess even though I wasn't a fan, other were. I did mention in Saturday's post that I had seen what looked like a "KFC" stand in Zion Market that evening……so I returned to check it out.

Gala Chicken 01

The place only does chicken, nothing else….no starches….

Gala Chicken 02

Gala Chicken 03

The menu also seems to only feature wings, drumsticks, and boneless crispy pieces, though I could be wrong. The older woman and gentleman were nice, but really felt more comfortable speaking Korean.

The prices didn't seem to bad, even thought it's take-out and chicken only. And heck, anyone that knows me understands that I love my chicken wings.

Anyway, I ordered a regular "Wings" ($7.99) and Sweet Soy ($8.99). I was told that my chicken would take fifteen minutes, which meant it was cooked fresh, a good sign. What was not that great was when I returned after about 10 minutes to find the guy constantly fiddling with the wings in the fryer. He kept taking pieces and cutting them with a knife to make sure it was cooked. C'mon, wings make up about 40% of your menu, that looked real amateur. Plus, all the cutting means that juices escape and my wings would be drier than they should. I know this place is new, but I'd think if you opened a place that only makes fried chicken, you'd know how to make without having to cut into every piece to make sure it's cooked then dumping them back in the fryer…… One of the great aspects about KFC chicken is the double fry. It's a technique I use myself. I didn't notice that happening here…..

Gala Chicken 05

Actually Gala does give you some Mul Kimchi, "water kimchi", a traditional accompaniment of KFC, which is on the extra sour side, but at least crisp and palate cleansing.

I work just a few blocks away and the chicken did smell pretty good. Opening my package I noticed that the take-out containers are kept open to prevent the chicken from getting soggy. I also noticed that I got what looked like "Spicy" wings instead of the Sweet Soy like I wanted.

Gala Chicken 04

So for those who keep score on the Kyochon-o-meter, there are six good sized wings per order. Though I prefer smaller wings which mean a better skin to meat ratio. Anyway, that's $1.33 per wing for original and $1.50 for Spicy……kind of on the pricey side, more than Kyochon if memory serves me.

And this ain't no Kyochon.

Gala Chicken 06

I found that while the batter was light, it was not as crisp as it looked. It was also very lightly seasoned, at least for my taste, and it had a greasiness to it. The drumettes were on the tough and dry side.

The Spicy really was more sweet and sticky than spicy.

Gala Chicken 07

The wing weren't really coated very well and I noticed that this batter goes soggy pretty quickly. The flavor was almost the same as the Sweet and Spicy chicken of BBQ Chicken, perhaps not as cloyingly sweet, but close. In fact, the chicken here just seemed like "BBQ Chicken lite", a step backwards from BBQ Chicken. Ditto for the tough and dry drumettes here.

So, you know I wasn't a fan of BBQ Chicken. You also know that I don't think the chicken here is not as good as BBQ Chicken was. You get the picture, right? Perhaps my friend Jenne is right; I'm just too darned picky. Anyway, I'm hoping that all of this are just grand opening issues and will be resolved. I'll try and visit in a couple of months and see…….

COMC: Revisits to those same old places – Izakaya Sakura, Pho King, Minh Ky, Kayaba, Pho Lucky, and Buga

Here's another one of those C(learing) O(ut) the M(emory) C(ard) posts. Just the same old places that I've posted on a zillions times.

You can figure out where is where, right? Just photos for this warm Saturday night.

Saturday Stuffs: Moby Dick gets harpooned, what’s up with Viet Bakery and Pho, and Paris Bakery and Thanh Son Tofu do the shuffle

Haven't done one of these for a while, so I thought the time was right.

Moby Dick is now "70 Bobcha  – Taste of Korea?:

Whatever that is…..

IMG_0505

From the day I first saw the sign to actually eating there, I just had a feeling this incarnation was doomed. The owner seemed to have a thing about creating and opening places. The menu was all over the place, the quality of the seafood was decent during my visits….it should be, the guy who owned the place also owns Ocean Harvest, a seafood wholesaler. The spot was humongous and rather difficult to maintain, even with Kazumi manning a sushi bar in the back.

I have no idea what's up with this place now….I'll have to find out soon.

As for Kazumi. He was last sighted at the Snooty Asian, per Eater San Diego.

4805 Convoy St
San Diego, CA 92111

What's up with Viet Bakery and Pho?:

04042013 007

It's actually kind of spooky. I first mentioned noticing this place in the same post as Moby Dick. And just like Moby Dick, this place just didn't do it for me. The dishes were uneven, as was the service, by the time I actually had a chance to try the pho the entire menu had changed. Everything that made the place seem special was gone.

The place isn't "officially closed" though, as you can see by the sign. I know for a fact that at least one offer was made to take over the spot, but it seems that the owners want to try again. They are currently using the kitchen for catering and such. As for the "we'll be opening soon", I wish them the best, but we know that this is often the kiss of death.

Paris Bakery and Thanh Son Tofu does the shuffle:

So I'm having a really lousy bowl of Bun Mang Vit and notice that Kien Giang has been replaced by Thanh Son Tofu?

Which got me wondering…..what's going on with the (former) Thanh Son Tofu spot. So I actually drive all the way down there to see. And to my surprise……

IMG_0541

I see the Paris Bakery coming soon sign. So either Paris Bakery is moving here, or this will be a second location. There's a good deal of space in this place, so I'm sure they'll be cranking out banh mi and baguettes like crazy. The parking kind of sucks though……

Clearing Out the Memory Card (COMC): Revisits to Golden City, Buga, and The Original Sab E Lee (Linda Vista)

I haven’t done one of these in a while. Here’s a trifecta of places I’ve posted on many, many, times. So I thought you’d like something with mostly just photos.

Golden City:

**** Golden City has closed

I actually hadn’t been back to Golden City in a while. But recently, I actually had lunch there twice in two weeks! The first time with my good buddy “YZ” and the second with my long time FOY (Friend of Yoso) The Zompus……aka MrZ.

Anyway, here are the food photos:

03232013 002

03232013 003

03232013 006

I know, it’s the same old thing….so once in a while, I’ll order something different, like the Jellyfish Head with XO Sauce.

03282013 005

03282013 006

Which could have used a bit more XO Sauce. The Jellyfish texture was very nice though.

I guess this is where I bid Aloha to MrZ, his lovely wfie, Paparratt (aka MrsZ), and their little “Woolet” (Little Z of course). MrZ has gotten a big promotion and is off to Seattle. Congrats and best wishes, I’ll miss you guys!

Buga:

It’s been pretty warm here for the last couple of weeks……so ramen is out of the question with the Missus. She was craving Yukkwe Bi Bim Bop, so the first place that came to mind was Buga.

Buga RevMore 01

Of course I got the Bi Bim Naengmyun.

Buga RevMore 02

Buga RevMore 00

Of course, being open for dinner at 4 in the afternoon also works in their favor. From the placard in the window, it seems that the place is undergoing a change of ownership….so we’ll see how that plays out.

The Original Sab E Lee (Linda Vista):

**** This location of TOSEL has closed

For some reason I crave TOSEL whenever it gets warmer. We visited twice in the last two weeks.

SEL More 01

SEL More 04

Over the last two visits we’ve found that the quality of beef used in the Koy Nua seems to have been upgraded. It’s much more tender now.

SEL More 03

Funny story, the first time the Missus had this, She noticed the spots on the plate, thinking it was blood and was kind of grossed out. Still, we enjoyed the beef. On our second visit, I noticed that the orange spots were actually decorations on the plate!

For some reason, the Missus has taken to the Tod Mun Pla – the fried fishcake. I think it’s the sauce.

So there you go, three places I’ve posted on many times….at least there are a couple of new dishes, right?

I hope everyone has had a great Easter weekend!

Saturday Stuffs: Goodbye Lucky Star….hello Jasmine 2? Taegukgi Korean BBQ, because we just need another AYCE joint, right? And other stuff….

Goodbye Lucky Star….hello Jasmine 2????

I hadn't really kept up on Lucky Star since an absolutely horrible visit back in 2005. And though things do take time, I'm really not sad to see the place go. I was recently in the area and noticed that all the signage is gone.

03162013 002

03162013 003

I won't go into the reason why Lucky Star was first shut down, then totally closed. But what I will mention is that I've heard from two different sources that the folks from Jasmine have picked up the lease on the place we called the "Big Red Barn".

Interesting, huh?

The address is:

Just because we need yet another AYCE Korean BBQ on Convoy:

I noticed this a couple of weeks back, but didn't have enough to put together a post. It looks like a pretty humongous AYCE joint is being constructed next to the new site of Zion Market.

Just because we needed another one of these, right?

Didn't you used to be NYPD Pizza?

Now it's something called Oliva Ristorante……

01092013 011

Next to Mr Peabody's on Friar's Road. When I asked someone who works in this little strip mall about the place, they told me, new owners, but same menu. The sign says "Italian & Green Cuisine"….  Green cuisine? Hmmm……

Revisits to Grandma Tofu and BBQ (aka Halmouny/Hal Mu Ni)

I know…..same title as the last time I posted on the place. Honestly, nothing else came to mind. A couple weeks ago I had yet another birthday. Instead of doing a party, I just wanted to enjoy an evening with the Missus. Not sure where to go, we decided on Halmouny….Grandma's.

GrandmasTofu 02

GrandmasTofu 03

GrandmasTofu 04Instead of the usual combination bossam with pork belly and pig's feet, we went with the Modeum Bossam, which also includes soondae, blood sausage. I've written about the bossam a couple of times already, so I'll just let you enjoy the photos.

I will say that the Missus is still not fond of the blood sausage. I think it's a texture thing as it's pretty mild in flavor, but kind of sticky in texture.

GrandmasTofu 05GrandmasTofu 07

We also ordered the Kimchi Soondubu, which wasn't anything special as it lacked a nice deep flavor and could have used more spice.

We ended up having a ton of leftovers…..in fact, I ended up making sandwiches with the leftover pork belly and pig's feet, which were delicious.

Soon after this visit, we noticed that the place was closed and some renovating was going on. The "term" under renovation always worries us as it often means a place is closing down or management is changing. Lucky for us, this was not the case here.

Upon our return, we noticed that the booths had been replaced, tables had been changed out, they now had built in burners which were still not in service as of our visit. The place was still full of dark woods, but the television was not as annoying, and the whole place had a nicer, lighter appearance.

GrandmasTofu 09

When you've been to a place many times, it easy to fall into the same ol', same ol'….ordering the "usual". After all, the menu here has some pitfalls. On this night, instead of ordering the Seolleongtang for the Missus, and the Dolsot Bi Bim Bap, we decided on ordering one of our favorite dishes, but one we had doubts that "Grandma" could pull off. The Heokyumso Jeongol, Black Goat Stew. Soon enough, a butane stove arrived (since the built-ins aren't ready yet), topped with a pretty hefty sized pot. Our panchan arrived, the usual suspects, and two good sized bowls of dolsot bop…….we could hear the rice sizzling.

GrandmasTofu 08

GrandmasTofu 10

GrandmasTofu 13
In all honesty, I was surprised at how good this was….maybe not the best I've ever had, but this was a notch above decent. There was a good amount, of fairly tender chopped goat, along with tendon on the bottom of the bowl. The goat was assertively gamey, which we appreciated. The flavor of the broth was good, not too salty, but could have used a bit more savory and acid tones. Still, this was hearty, and quite satisfying…..

GrandmasTofu 12

GrandmasTofu 11Along with the wonderful rice crust….loosened by adding just a touch of water to the dolsot…..wonderful flavors and textures here.

Even though the menu says this is a portion for two ($29.99), this was way more food than we could eat. We ended up taking home almost half of it.

GrandmasTofu 14

Just goes to show, we need to stretch out once in a while, beyond the horizon of our favorites.

I guess it'll be Budae Jeongol next time….after all, who doesn't love a stew of Spam, sausage, and, ramen noodles, right? Heck, it'll be just like college again!

B.H. Chung

*** Update: BH Chung has closed and is now a location of Yu's Garden

I usually get into work at around 6 in the morning…..this means that I'm actually able to spend more time with the Missus and Da Boyz  during the evenings and I get a ton of work done before other folks get into work. One drawback of going to work so early is that I can get pretty hungry by the time 1030 rolls around. So I'm always looking for places that open by 1030 or 11. A couple of years back, Cathy posted on BH Chung, I also know of a few people who enjoy the Katsu Curry here as well. An added bonus is that even though BH Chung is housed in the Convoy strip mall with the parking lot from hell, they, along with Tofu House open pretty early.

BH Chung 01

Frankly, I'm not a big fan of most of those Korean-Japanese "Hwe" type places, though it's really hard to screw up katsu too badly.

BH Chung 02

The older Korean woman who works here is very nice; always offering me seconds of panchan. The service is very mom-and-pop, though I've only eaten here before 11am.

BH Chung 03

On my first visit I ordered the Chicken Katsu Curry….not cheap at $9.99. Though you do get some standard panchan with your meal. And as I mentioned before, the nice woman working here has always asked me if I wanted more.

The curry itself was not exactly photogenic, brown gloppiness poured over some form of fried protein.

BH Chung 04

BH Chung 04aThe chicken itself was on the dry side, though I noticed that the cooking and prep was done correctly since the breading wasn't peeling off the chicken. I prefer my katsu on the crisp and lighter side, this one was very hard and in my opinion a bit over-fried. The curry wasn't anything to write home about, though I've had worse….it was kind of lumpy though.

Still it was quite a bit of food. I later mentioned this meal to an acquaintance…who told me to try the Tonkatsu Curry instead. So a couple of weeks later….famished at 10am, I marched on over to BH Chung and had the pork version.

BH Chung 05

BH Chung 06

BH Chung 07

You gotta hand it to these folks, they seem to be pretty consistent. This was pretty much a replay of my previous meal, except the curry was a little bit less gloppy and had a more pronounced flavor.

With a sprig of parsley and slice of orange as garnish, there's something  unabashedly "diner-like" in the presentation. So I thought, "well that's that….." and moved on. But a couple of days later, I had gone into work at around 530, by 1000 I was starving. I jumped in the car and headed to Convoy. I intended on grabbing a bite from Tofu House, but for some reason, I just ended up walking into BH Chung. On my previous visit, I noticed a young lady having the Dolsot Bi Bim Bap. It looked decent, so I decided to get that….. I guess you get five panchan with the Bi Bim Bap.

BH Chung 08

BH Chung 09

BH Chung 10It looked pretty good overall, but after further investigation, this really didn't pass muster. Bi Bim Bap is a humble dish, so I don't expect a huge amount of meat, though the amount here was good. It was however, very bland bulgogi. So I quickly banished any thought of having that. For some reason, no matter how long I waited, the rice in this stone bowl just never really crusted up. The cho-gochujang tasted kind of weak and watered down as well. This just didn't do it for me.

BH Chung 11

Well, after three meals here, I think I'll give the place a rest. I'll resist temptation and just head over to Tofu House like I intended. Unless someone has a great recommendation????
