Road Trip – Tiger Bar & Cafe (June Lake) and it’s back to Erick Schat’s Bakkerÿ (Bishop) and Alabama Hills Cafe & Bakery (Lone Pine)

I thought I'd best finish up this series on our stay in June Lake so here goes…..

After the Missus did Her morning paddleboarding while I got breakfast at Silver Lake Resort Cafe and then hiking the Reversed Peak Loop Trail, we headed back to June Lake to freshen up. We waned to grab a quick lunch and just relax. Right across the street from our accommodations is the Tiger Bar & Cafe, one of the few places opened daily from nine to nine.

IMG_1279

The place serves everything from breakfasts, to "Mexican" dishes, to burgers, to salads……you get the picture. We decided to just get a simple sandwich and you know the Missus….She loves Her bacon; so we got a BLT on sourdough, with chips as our side to go and walked on down to Gull Lake, returning to pick up our lunch.

IMG_1269

Once we picked up our order; we simply strolled across the street, to our accommodations, and split our sandwich in the comfort of our room.

IMG_1270

This was pretty much a by-the-book BLT. The chips were a bit thicker than we prefer.

The bread was a bit under-toasted, but the bacon was nice and crisped, the tomatoes decently ripe.

IMG_1272

Would I go out of my way for this sandwich…..well, no. But since it was right across the street…..

On my way out, I noticed the "specials" menu.

IMG_1280

I noticed a couple of items that we interesting. Plus, the Missus and I just wanted to relax before leaving the next morning. So, after our afternoon nap, we decided to head on over for an early dinner.

It was 4pm and there were a few customers already in the place….most of them having a "happy hour" it seems.

IMG_1281

The Missus had a glass of wine, I had a light and refreshing Mammoth Brewing Pilsner.

IMG_1282

And we ordered from the specials grease board menu, all items were priced at $9.95. Our Server was very nice and friendly.

First to arrive were the pork rib tips.

IMG_1284

This was actually pretty good. Not a huge fan of the overly sweet, mass-produced BBQ sauce; but the rib tips were fairly tender, with nice cartiledgeous chewiness. A decent amount of smokiness with a mild rub. It was better than we had expected.

Next to arrive were the fried pickles. Man, the portion size was pretty large.

IMG_1286

Crisp outside, with a sour-tangy-saltiness, this was a nice version.

The Fried Brussel Sprouts on the other hand was our least favorite.

IMG_1287

The batter didn't hold up well and was quite salty. The actual brussel sprouts were mushy and had a weird texture.

Still, two out of three ain't bad. Again, I wouldn't go out of my way for this, but being across the street…..

Of course, after all of that fried food, we needed to take a walk and headed back down to Gull Lake to watch the day turn into night.

IMG_1290

IMG_1293

The next morning we headed out early and made a stop in Bishop at Erick Schat's.

IMG_1298

This time we got the Sheepherder Bread and of course more cookies for the Missus.

IMG_1299

That bread is great…..this will be a regular stop for us from now on.

About an hour south of Bishop is Lone Pine and it seemed like a good idea to make a brunch stop before the five hour plus drive home. We decided on revisiting Alabama Hills Cafe. We stopped an easily found parking and unlike our previous visit, things were rather mellow in the restaurant.

IMG_1304

The Missus got the bacon and egg breakfast, which came with a rather dense biscuit, and breakfast potatoes….and of course bacon.

IMG_1309 IMG_1311While the potatoes had a generous amount of bell peppers and onions, it was bit on the greasy side. No complaints about the bacon as She also ended up poaching some of mine.

Having thought that the BLT I had for lunch here was decent; I got the Breakfast BLT.

IMG_1312

Other than the bread being a bit under toasted….and the interesting portion of grapes….I guess they wanted to make sure I had some fruit with breakfast; I enjoyed this sandwich. Even though the eggs could have been a bit more runny; there were no off flavors, the nice smoky saltiness of the bacon (before the Missus stole it), acidity of the tomato, this was a decent sandwich. I'd have it again.

IMG_1315

Typical diner-ish fare; pretty much what we expected.

And then we were headed home……intent on getting some Asian food for the Missus!

Thanks for stopping by!

Road Trip – Alabama Hills Cafe & Bakery (Lone Pine) and Returning to June Lake

Just a couple of weeks after returning from June Lake and Tahoma, the Missus had me back on the road again with a return trip to June Lake. This time the Missus wanted me to cook for Her coworkers who regularly camp at June Lake. Yeeesh, talk about having to do a bunch of prep and then organize and pack!

So, off we were again. We decided to make a lunch stop in Lone Pine again, though not at Lone Star Bistro. Instead, I'd read that Alabama Hills Cafe seemed like a good stop, with diner-ish breakfasts and sandwiches. It's located right off the 395 and on this September early afternoon, the weather wasn't scalding hot yet.

IMG_1176

So we walked in and looked over the menu…..

IMG_1172

Placed our order and took a seat outside. We had a lovely view of Mount Whitney from our table.

IMG_1175

And things started with some ice tea for the both of us.

IMG_1173

The sandwiches looked huge, so we decided to share a California Club. And yes, that sandwich was quite large.

IMG_1178

We subbed onion rings instead of fries which was a $2 upcharge. The onion rings were incinerated which kinda killed the flavor.

IMG_1179

I've mentioned my nostalgic love for club sandwiches in various posts over the years. It brings back memories of having lunch with my mom….you know a "clubhouse sandwich". Anyway, this one was pretty good. The sourdough bread was fine and the Missus enjoyed the addition of some creamy avocado.

IMG_1180

I know folks that balk at the addition of cheese on a clubhouse, but the provolone added a nice milkiness, and this was overly slathered in mayo. The turkey was standard issue stuff and there wasn't enough smoky-salty bacon for the Missus so She poached all of mine. I think we'll order extra bacon if we get this again.

Anyway, no muss, no fuss…we'd end up back here for breakfast on the way back from June Lake.

IMG_1182

IMG_1183

From here, it was a 2 hour drive to June Lake. And as before we stayed at the June Lake Villager. Our room had a full kitchen which made my prep for dinner easy.

IMG_1196

After prepping for the campsite dinner, we took a stroll down to Gull Lake.

On this day the June Lake Jam Fest was going on! Even so, it wasn't overly crowded.

IMG_1192

And the attack cats, remember them, where busy patrolling the grounds.

IMG_1191

We took a look at relaxing and serene Gull Lake.

IMG_1188

Then headed back to the room…packed up and drove to the campsite where I made dinner for everyone; which they enjoyed! Whew….

Road Trip – Erick Schat’s Bakkerÿ (Bishop)

On the way back from Lake Tahoe, I wanted to make a stop at an iconic Bakery in Bishop. I had been reading about Erick Schat's Bakkerÿ for ages. Originally working at the Bishop Bakery established in 1903 by the Schoch family, Jacob "Jack" Schat an immigrant from Utrecht, who's family has a long history in baking came to Bishop in 1950 and found work at the Bishop Bakery, eventually buying the business and naming it after his son. The bakery has become an institution. It is said that it has over 2 million visitors a year! Atlas Obscura mentions that the bakery produces 25,000 loaves of bread a day. Considering that the population of Bishop is around 4,000, that would be 6 loaves per person….that's a lot of carbs!

We headed on thru Bishop and stopped entered the crowded parking lot, and voila! A car was just leaving a space! Must have been fate, right?

IMG_0160

IMG_0161

We had decided to stop in for an early lunch. The place was bustling, even in the middle of the week! The shop is packed with loaves of bread, cookies, and a sandwich section. The Missus decided to go bread and cookie shopping.

IMG_0165

While I decided to get a sandwich for us to share. Calvin had told me his favorite was the turkey on the special bread of the house Basque Sheepherders Bread which has been trademarked since 1938.

IMG_0166

I stood in the queue, placed my order, and picked it up when ready. The Missus was still shopping so I found us a table outside.

IMG_0163

IMG_0169

It was a nice morning, the heat hadn't settled in yet.

IMG_0167

As for the sandwich….well, the bread lives up to the hype. The crust had a mild chew to it; the bread was so soft and almost fluffy, with a light yeasty-sweetness.

Loved the sprouts and tomatoes, but that turkey was so try and tasteless……

IMG_0170

I'll pass on sandwiches from here in the future.

And the Missus went with a sourdough loaf instead of the Sheepherders bread! Though we'd get that on our next trip thru Bishop.

IMG_0177

And the Missus really enjoys the cookies from here.

IMG_0175

Just the bread and the cookies makes this a regular stop for us when we're in the area.

We Be OB (Ocean Beach) – Breakfasts with JJ

While grabbing breakfasts with JJ at Daybreak Island Grill, I noticed a very colorful place right across the street and roundabout.

We Be Ob 01

Named "We Be OB"…….looking online, the place served everything from coffee and acai bowls to burgers, hoagies, sandwiches, shakes, smoothies, ice cream, hot dogs and something called a "panini weenie". Nothing fancy mind you, but I read the place was dog friendly, so JJ and I decided to drop by.

We Be Ob 02

There's a small parking lot, but arriving just past the 8am opening time….well, this is OB, the place was empty. This is one of those, you order at the counter places.

We Be Ob 03

The gentleman working was super friendly and welcoming. He was so nice to JJ. I looked over the menu and I just couldn't help myself.

We Be Ob 04

I just had to try a "panini weenie", so I ordered a half, which seemed like a bargain for $7. The gentleman told me to hang with JJ in the back patio which had nice seating, a dart board, corn hole, and other stuffs.

We Be Ob 05

But I chose to sit out front.

We Be Ob 06

And JJ enjoyed watching the people (and pooches) stroll on by.

We Be Ob 07

As for my ahem "weenie"; I got the PA Dutch (Half – $7).

We Be Ob 08

This was basically three lengthwise slices of hot dogs on what, at least to me seemed like a ciabatta like bread. I enjoyed the pickled carrots/veggies and of course the sauerkraut; though I wish there was more of that and less mayo. But it's hard to complain for $7 these days.

We Be Ob 09

I did enjoy the "very OB" vibe of the place, laid-back surfer/beachy. For some reason, I think a place like this would do just fine in Haleiwa…..

While sitting I noticed that the shop is right next to the Bacon Street entrance to Robb Field, close to the San Diego River Bikeway which runs along the San Diego River Estuary. I thought that JJ might enjoy a walk along the the bikeway. So, I returned the following weekend. Same really nice fellow working. This time I noticed that one of the televisions was live streaming some baby eagles from a nest in Big Bear. It was really cute.

We Be Ob 10

Since I had to use the roundabout to get here I got a Bacon Street Roundabout Panini ($9).

We Be Ob 11  We Be Ob 12 This actually had two eggs, bacon, cheese, and a very mild chili. Basically a brushing of "beans", some bacon, mild cheese….if not for the two eggs, it might have been a bit too much bread for me. But this did fill me up.

We Be Ob 13

I had parked in the lot for Robb Field right next to We Be OB and took JJ for a nice walk along the bikeway.

We Be Ob 14

Which he enjoyed.

You know, We Be OB is not fancy…it's just a nice, inviting, laidback place and really fits the Ocean Beach profile, with simple food, some relatively healthy….Acai and smoothies…some not, like the weenie paninis, reasonably priced….part sports bar, part neighborhood hang out.

Chatting with the owner, I found that he used to live in Bay Park, but moved to OB….I guess so "He Be OB"?

Tequila Part 3 – Chocolate and Tequila Tasting at La Rojena, Fonda Chivo y Vaca, and the Sky Bar (Hotel Solar de las Animas)

**** Here's part 3 of my mostly photo posts on our stay in Tequila

We started our last full day in Tequila, with a birote as I noted in my previous post. We wandered around a bit before heading to a tour and tasting I scheduled. We were in Tequila and it would be almost sacrilegious to not visit the oldest Tequila distillery, right? And to make things more entertaining for the Missus, I decided to do the chocolate and tequila tasting as well.

This would take place at Jose Cuervo's Fabrica la Rojena distillery. I mentioned that Jose Antonio Cuervo was the first person granted permission to produce Tequila for sale in an earlier post. Fabrica la Rojena, the distillery was established in 1812, making it the oldest active distillery in Latin America.

Finding the place was easy…..it's located on, you guessed it, Calle Jose Cuervo. The view up that street is quite lovely.

IMG_9999

We met in front of the Mundo Cuervo Hall, where that giant crow statue stands and were soon guided on a tour of the place.

IMG_0004

IMG_0008

IMG_0011

Making it to the back of the distillery where we got to see the "pina", the heart of the agave plants being delivered and prepped.

IMG_0015

Like the previous day, it was getting pretty darn warm….this is hard work.

IMG_0017

I had worried that doing tequila distillery tours two days in a row might lead to a lot of overlap; but to our extreme pleasure, what we learned here actually added to what we had learned the previous day. We got to be much more close up to things as well.

IMG_0020

And there were actual displays along the way as well. I didn't know that American Oak barrels were used for Reposado and Anejo aging.

IMG_0023

After the tour, the Missus and I met up with the nice young man who guided us thru our tasting which the Missus truly enjoyed.

IMG_0026

What I most enjoyed was chatting with him about his life; he was born in Glendale and his family moved back to Jalisco and Tequila when he was 10 years old. Can you imagine how being seprated from your friends at that age must be? And he was more comfortable speaking English at that time. He also liked that we enjoyed the varied tastes of Blanco. And then we asked him about the new Cristalino Tequila; where Anejo is passed thru a filtering process, making it clear, and taking it back to almost being a Blanco….but charging a person even more than a Anejo? He laughed and said it's kind of a hipster thing right now…..'nuff said.

We enjoyed our tour and tasting at La Rojena.

IMG_0012

When we were done; it was…well time for lunch. We just wanted something simple and hearty. And yes, we were in Jalisco; so Birria de Chivo was high on our list. And there was a place named Fonda Chivo y Vaca close by!

IMG_0037

Turns out it was a three story restaurant with views of the street. We were seated on the ground floor.

IMG_0030

Of course we got some Birria de Chivo and also Carne en su Jugo.

IMG_0031

IMG_0036

The Carne en su Jugo had a very upfront acidity, which was interesting…..the beans were so earthy and perfectly cooked.

IMG_0033

The Birria de Chivo was slightly gamy; nice smokey flavors, a bit of spice.

IMG_0035

The meat was on the chewier side. Definitely not like Birriería Las 9 Esquinas, but miles ahead of what we have here in San Diego.

Fonda Chivo y Vaca
Jesús Rodríguez de Hijar 17
Tequila, Jalisco, Mexico

On this day, we actually managed a nice siesta……..

And then we woke and took a nice stroll. On an interesting note, we saw the really nice young man who did our chocolate pairing at La Rojena in the lobby of the hotel talking to the staff. Apparently, Jose Cuervo owns Hotel Solar de las Animas!

As the evening rolled around we took a nice stroll. This was a Thursday and the hotel was getting busier. As we strolled around Plaza Principal we could see the families doing there "evening thing".

IMG_0042

IMG_0043b

We looked for a spot to have a seat and just take in the evening, but it was busy. It was then we saw a couple waving to us, they moved over on a bench and beckoned us over so we could enjoy the sights and sounds. These are the moments that make travel so special!

When dinner time came around; we just decided to head back to the hotel. On our first evening in the town, we enjoyed having a drink at the Sky Bar at our hotel. We also noticed that they had an abbreviated menu of  La Antigua Casona, the very popular restaurant in the hotel. So, we just decided to have our last dinner there.

With a nice view of the town.

IMG_0045

The Aguachile Negro and Jicama was just as good as what we'd had in the restaurant.

IMG_0049

IMG_0053

The Ceviche less so; but overall this was a nice, light meal.

IMG_0050

Sky Bar (in Hotel Solar de las Animas)
Calle Albino Rojas #14
46400 Tequila, Jalisco, Mexico

And of course, our room with the amazing view was just a minute away.

IMG_0054

The next morning, we woke a bit earlier than usual and took a stroll around town before our ride to the airport.

IMG_0060

IMG_0061

IMG_0064

We were indeed taken be the art, the colors…..the Tequila…..but there was more that made our stay wonderful.

It was the warm people….and the pooches…..

IMG_0067

IMG_9997

That had us contemplating as I got that Birote yet again…..

IMG_9994

IMG_9991

That we'd return once again, in the middle of the week to enjoy Tequila…both the town and the drink!

Revisits to A-Chau and Avian Sandwiches

My revisits to the more "modern Banh Mi" at Banh Mi Express and Paris Sandwiches had me wondering how some of the more "traditional" banh mi shop were doing. So, it was time for a couple of revisits.

A-Chau:

Well, I decided to head on up to the place where I did my first post on Banh Mi in June of 2005! My how time flies! On this day I lucked out and the slightly psycho parking lot was only half full. It was just after 8am on a Sunday morning so Minh Ky  wasn't open yet.

A Chau Rev 01

It's pretty much "all business" here. You walk in, order, pay, get your sandwich and get the heck out of Dodge.

A Chau Rev 02

The Banh Mi Pate Cha here now runs you $7.25. It was $5.50 on my last visit and the end of 2021. OF course I had to get some Cha Gio as well.

A Chau Rev 03

I had been a bit critical of A-Chau over the last few years because the place seemed to have slipped a bit over the years.

This version was actually pretty good.

A Chau Rev 04

The exterior was crusty, the bread was light and yeasty. There was that "unicorn" of banh mi ingredients, a slice of cucumber present. The pickled veggies were thinly sliced and though there could have been a bit more, it was crisp and sour.

A Chau Rev 06

The ingredients was nicely distributed thru out the whole sandwich; the amount of funky pate was excellent, the cha lua nice and toothsome. Perhaps a bit too much mayo, but I think that's splitting hairs. There didn't seem to be a lot of jalapeno; but what those thin slices were pretty darn spicy.

Pretty good banh mi!

But while the banh mi seems to be "back"…the Cha Gio still seemed to be "stuck in a rut".

A Chau Rev 05
A Chau Rev 07

While it was improved on my last visit, this was much like what I had back in 2018.  While still nicely "stuffed" it is still lacking in crispness, very chewy, the filling cold and lacking in a good pork flavor.

Oh well, at least the Banh Mi is back on my "list" here. I need to return more often.

Avian Sandwiches & Fresh Drinking Water:

In my post on Banh Mi Express, "FOY" ST asked if I'd be doing Avian Sandwiches. Well, considering that Avian is one of the closer Banh Mi shops to me, of course I was. In fact, Avian was one of the most recent Banh Mi shops I posted on before this last  spate of visits.

I will say, that this small shop can get kinda crazy, with all the old timers drinking coffee outside, the endless stream of folks playing the lottery or filling up water.

Avian Rev 01

The interior can get positively claustrophobic.

Avian Rev 02

Like now you can get some body wash, shampoo, and conditioner with your Cane Juice, Alkaline Water, Lottery Tickets, and Banh Mi if so desired.

Avian Rev 03

My drill here is to order my sandwich and find some crevice or corner to squeeze into until my number is called.

Like on my last visit; I got the Banh Mi Nem Nuong, which is now $8.95. It was $7.95 last May.

Avian Rev 04  Avian Rev 05 The bread was crusty, though on the drier end of the scale. It had a good amount of pickled veggies; crisp, sour, and refreshing. Huge slices of jalapeno, some of which was spicy, some not…time for some "chili roulette"? Nice, thick slice of cucumber.

Two thick slices of nem nuong, savory-sour, with a mild sweetness. A bit too much mayo, but acceptable. Good amount of fresh cilantro. All evenly distributed.

Avian Rev 06

A good banh mi…probably why it's one of my first choices for banh mi these days. In spite of the almost nine dollar price!

Hope everyone had a wonderful weekend!

Paris Sandwiches Revisted

My revisit to Banh Mi Express had me wondering how Paris Sandwiches was doing, after all it had been almost a year since my last visit. So, I drove on over for an early lunch.

Paris Sandwiches Rev 01

What I quickly noticed as I walked toward the shop was that there weren't any "old timers" having coffee outside. This was when I first noticed the sign for Saigon Corner, which has seemed to taken over that duty in this strip mall, at least on a couple visits I made.

I kind of consider Paris Sandwiches to be like Banh Mi Express as a "tweener" banh mi shop; attempting to please a varied customer base. Looking at the posted menu; English descriptions, though the Vietnamese names are displayed below. The place was doing some steady business on this day.

Paris Sandwiches Rev 02

I got the Cha Lua (Pork Roll on the menu – $7.05). The two women working the line were super fast and my banh mi was ready in less than five minutes.

This is what it looked like unwrapped.

Paris Sandwiches Rev 03 Paris Sandwiches Rev 04  I've always enjoyed the bread from Paris Bakery and this is basically the same. Nice and light; "crackley", slightly yeasty. The Cha Lua was sliced fairly thin and layered nicely. Not much pate. Also light on the mayo which suited me well.

Not enough pickled veggies on this visit and of course the cucumber was MIA. I had to make some "adjustments" to the fillings as all the jalapenos were piled in the middle and a lot of the cilantro leaves were yellowed; which I removed. Kind of sloppy in my opinion.

Paris Sandwiches Rev 05

While this was an ok banh mi; I felt that the proportion was a bit off and it was kind of sloppily put together. On the good side; this led me to wonder about  couple of other banh mi shops that I hadn't been to in a while!

Kali’s Garden Cafe (Julian)

Back at the end of March, we decided to take JJ up to Julian. I know it might sound strange, but we hadn't been back to Julian since like 2003-2004…over 20 years ago!

And upon parking, we were instantly thrust into the charming old west-mining town. Several businesses were dog friendly and the Missus enjoyed doing some shopping. First at the fun, tourist kitschy, old Americana wielding, Old Julian Garage.

We also enjoyed The Olde Goat.

Where we ended up getting some freeze-dried goat milk and freeze-dried goat milk ice cream for JJ.

Julian Olde Goat 03

It's too bad The Olde Goat doesn't include these for mail order, because JJ really enjoyed them.

The Olde Goat

And JJ waited while Momma went and did some pie shopping…..

Julian JJ 01

Though in the end, the Missus decided to go without. She'd never taken to the pies from Julian.

We then had to find a place for an early lunch. We settled on a place with outdoor seating close to where we parked that served Vegan style cuisine named Kali's Garden Cafe.

Kalis Garden 01

The Missus went in and ordered while I hung out with JJ in the patio. After ordering, we just enjoyed the clean, crisp air…..it had been snowing as recently as the week before, but we didn't come across traces during our visit and drive.

Soon enough, the friendly, cheerful young lady brought over our food.

The Missus got the Avocado Toast.

Kalis Garden 02

The bread was nice and crisp-yeasty. A decent sourdough. The avocado was a thin layer of mashed with a sprinkling of a smoky-spicy powder. The bread was the best part of the dish.

The Missus ordered me a jackfruit burger.

Kalis Garden 04

Like the avocado toast, it was the bread; in this case a brioche like bun that had been nicely toasted that was the best part of the dish. The jackfruit "burger" had a mushy texture, and I really couldn't make out much in terms of flavor as it was slatered in a very sweet BBQ sauce and there was a lot of Thousand Island like dressing poured over it.

All in all, an ok meal. We'll explore other options in the area the next time we visit.

JJ did have a fun time exploring Julian.

Julian JJ 02

As a postscript…..I'm sure most of you know. But three weeks after our visit a 5.2 magnitude earthquake with an epicenter outside of Julian occurred.

Screenshot 2025-04-16 082935

I'm relieved to note that even thought there was some minor damage, that there were no fatalities. As for me; I was driving east on the 52 when my phone went off. I didn't notice a thing. I guess this is a good warning for us to be ready…..

Banh Mi Express Revisited

Getting the rather "Americanized"  banh mi from Poppy Boba had me wondering how some of regular banh mi stops were doing. So, I set out to do some revisits. I decided to start with my most "recent-decent" banh mi, which was from Banh Mi Express, which provides one of the few pre-lunch options that is not fast food or premade bento's in the area on a Saturday morning.

Banh Mi Express Rev 01

The place was doing some pretty good business on this morning. Remember when this was Phuong Nga Bakery and Cafe? Banh Mi Express is kind of interesting as I think of it being a bit of a "tweener" between the more traditional banh mi and more Westernized versions. For instance, the menu only features westernized names for the sandwiches.

Banh Mi Express Rev 02

For instance, I decided on the Cha Lua….which is on the menu as "Pate – Meat Loaf" ($7.75). It seems that the going price for banh mi seems to run in the 7-8 dollar range these days. I couldn't believe the version at Poppy was over ten bucks!

Once back home I unwrapped my Banh Mi.

Banh Mi Express Rev 03

I was glad to note that the house made bread was back to normal, not the rather strange version I got on my previous visit. There was a bit too much mayo for my taste, but a good amount of funky pate was provided. The cha lua were sliced thinly, which I kind of liked. The jalapenos were quite mild and I noticed that the cucumber slices were MIA. The cilantro had quite a bit of think stems.

The bread was crusty and yeasty. There were proportionally less pickled vegetables than I would have enjoyed.

Banh Mi Express Rev 04

Not a bad banh mi; but it did fuel my curiosity even more. It was time to "make the banh mi rounds" as it were.

Road Trip – Helena Avenue Bakery (Santa Barbara), Good Seed Coffee Boutique (Solvang), and a Revisit to Bell’s (Los Alamos)

After a surprisingly good dinner at Shalhoob's and a nightcap at Figueroa Mountain Brewing Company, I thought I would have a nice night's sleep. Well, that was not to be. I did anticipate JJ's 4am morning "puppy potty", but I had a hard time sleeping because of the traffic noise from the 101. I really enjoyed the Moxy Hotel, but it was right on the 101 and the traffic noise kept me up for most of the night. Oh well, cant win 'em all.

When morning arose, the Missus and I made some quick plans. We had lunch reservations at our favorite restaurant in the area and added in what we thought would be a fun visit for JJ.

But before all of this, we decided to head down the block. I had noted that right across the way from Figueroa Mountain Brewing was Helena Avenue Bakery. I decided to get my croissant fix, since they supposedly made everything inhouse.

It's quite a charming spot, the bakery shares the space with a wine tasting room. It also shares the address with a place we had really looked forward to eating at that kind of disappointed us on our previous visit to the area.

You order at the counter and are given a number. We had a seat at one of the lovely outdoor tables.

Soon enough my Americano and Croissant was ready.

IMG_5716

The Americano was fairly smooth, with a nice kick.

IMG_5718 IMG_5720  Seeing that the ridges were falling off the viennoiserie made me somewhat concerned, but the pastry did not shatter into crumbs upon consuming. The exterior was light and crisp, the interior fairly fluffy and "honeycombed". It was sorely lacking in butter and even salt for that matter. Quite bland overall.

A "halfway there" croissant if I've ever had one. Liked the vibe of the place, though I'm not sure what it would be like if busy.

Since we had lunch reservations in Los Alamos, we decided to head on up to Solvang which is sort of on the way. We thought that JJ might enjoy the place and since it was a Monday during the slow season, things wouldn't be too hectic.

And we were right. It was calm and relaxed, we enjoyed strolling around. And JJ kinda enjoyed his "photo-ops".

This was when we thought it would be fun staying in Solvang with JJ, which would be our next "road trip".

We took a short break at this little coffee shop.

Where I had my second Americano of the day. This one was smooth and easy to drink. We just had a seat on the porch and enjoyed things.

It was a nice break in the action for us.

We did a bit more walking; then it was time to head off for lunch. Which was going to be at our favorite restaurant in the area; Bell's in Los Alamos. Over time we've come to conclusion that we enjoy lunches at Bell's more than the prefix dinner. It's much more classically French, with local produce and such. And since this is my fourth post on the place; I'm just going to mainly do photos. You can click on the preceding links for more info on our previous visits.

Perhaps because it was 11am on a Monday, we had the place to ourselves for a while. The back patio is dog friendly and the chef even came out and spent some time with JJ!

We ordered what we usually do at Bell's. They still make one of my favorite versions of Beef Tartare.

Love the cut of beef, with a wonderful texture, perfect ratio of capers and pungency, so rich and decadent.

Of course the Missus had to have Escargot.

IMG_8707

The Country Terrine is nice and porky, with hints of winey-sweetness. It goes well with the cornichons and grainy-pungent Dijon.

IMG_5769

We also enjoy the slightly offally, mildly sweet Chicken Liver Mousse.

IMG_5763

The strawberry jam works as a nice sweet "foil", with the cornichons sour-acidity clearing the palate. Our only issue is with the crostini which were hard rather than crisp.

As with our previous we enjoyed our lunch at Bell's and would return again in a few weeks.

JJ enjoyed his first visit to a Michelin Star restaurant and got treated so nicely!

Now it was time to head back to the hotel and get a much needed nap…..if I could block out the freeway noise; before dinner!
