Pho-raging around UTC: Pho UTC and a revisit to Pho La Jolla

I received an email after my post on JK's Burgers and Hot Dogs asking me what I thought about the Pho at the shop in the same mall. Pho shop? Same mall? I did a short search and by golly, there was Pho UTC and Grill just a few doors down……Man, I'm losing my touch in my old age……. Anyway, I decided to stop by on the way back from a meeting a couple of weeks back.

Pho UTC & Grill:

**** Pho UTC & Grill has closed

Pho UTC 01

The place was really quiet when I arrived.

Pho UTC 02

Pho UTC 02 aClean and fairly non-de-script, in a modern pho shop kind of way.The service was adequate, not surly, not friendly, also quite generic. Things move along quite quickly…at least it did for me as I was out of the place in 30 minutes.

Which should kind of be the theme as the broth of the Pho Dac Biet was very "San Diego generic"……in other words, not beefy, lacking in anise, or any other real flavor, other than a mild onion and being quite salty.

Pho UTC 03

Pho UTC 04The broth was on the "thin" side, lacking any richness. The color was nice and the broth clear.

The noodles were horrendously overcooked and mushy.

Surprisingly, the beef tendon was quite good with a nice mildly chewy, yet not hard texture. The rare steak was way overcooked and hard by the time the bowl made it to my table. There were meatballs in this version, typical, "squeaky" texture. All the other proteins were fine.

Pho UTC 05

As you can tell, this wouldn't be a first, or even fifth or sixth choice…… though if you're in the area and absolutely needed a bowl….well even then. As MrZ and other "pho punners" would probably say, "not aw-pho, but totaly pho-gettable".

This kind of had me wondering. What was happening with Pho La Jolla since I last visited 6 years ago. So guess what…..

Pho La Jolla:

Well, the place looks the same…….

Pho LaJolla 01

Pho LaJolla 02I went with the usual #1 one kinda thing since I wasn't sure what to get…….

The bean sprouts were terrible, with brown spots on them and a few that were kind of slimy. The jalapeno looked like it had been around the block a few times too.

The broth was very light, slightly cloudy, though I could make out a light anise fragrance.

Pho LaJolla 03

Pho LaJolla 04It was, alas, very weak, salty, lacking in fat and richness.

Loved how the rare beef arrived not totally cooked, but it had that metallic flavor of beef headed downhill. Not much else in terms of protein.

The noodles were prepared perfectly, but that was of little consolation.

I couldn't help but think that the students and faculty of UCSD deserve better. Though perhaps folks just want pho not to offend…..

Sunday Stuffs: Pho Paradise coming to Convoy, The Original Tofu House to Mira Mesa, and other stuffs…..

Here's more stuff that I've seen recently.

Pho Paradise opening on Convoy:

Man, V Bakery barely lasted 6 months. Viet Bakery and Pho for not that much longer. So now, it's back to Vietnamese, something called Pho Paradise.

12262014 001

The "Pho" portion of the logo looks strangely familiar, but I just can't place it. I'm still hoping for decent pho in the Convoy-Kearny Mesa area……… I'm hoping this will at least be decent.

The Original Tofu House opening in Mira Mesa:

I saw this a couple of days ago and drove by yesterday to take a photo.

IMG_6174

Quite a few Korean food places opening around Mira Mesa.

I believe this used to be Arby's????

Casa Medina has moved?:

I noticed that Casa Medina had closed on the way home the other day. So I dropped by after work today to check it out.

IMG_6175

So it looked like the place has closed, until I turned around and saw the sign for Casa Medina along side that of the old Bismallah Restaurant above World Market & Produce.

IMG_6176

So unless the market likes to collect signs of defunct restaurants, you can now get your Halal tacos inside of World Market & Produce.

Was it cold enough for you?

I thought it was pretty chilly this morning and checked my weather app. And did a double, no triple take….

IMG_6189

Must be a malfunction, right? This would be the weather in the Bay Park area……and would also be colder than what we experienced in Seattle!

My Christmas dinner:

Both the Missus and I have been working quite a bit. She had to work on Christmas and after grilling a ton of chicken for Her potluck and making Her a separate lunch/dinner, I really didn't feel like doing anymore cooking. So I decided to head over to Sushi Yaro and Sam put together a nice sashimi combo for me between the zillion rolls.

IMG_6159

It made for quite a feast. It was also nice seeing Sam; it had been a while. As a bonus, a couple of the "old-time" regulars whom I haven't seen in ages also dropped by, before the place got totally swamped. Sam mentioned that I've known him for about eleven years now! Time does fly…….

I hope you're having a great holiday season!

Monday Meanderings: Jin’s Pot appears empty, Tan Ky will become Tim Ky Noodle, the Missus favorite coffee, and other silliness.

During this time of the year, folks are usually quite busy, so here's something short and sweet for Monday.

Jin's Pot appears empty:

IMG_6092

IMG_6090Slight pun intended, though I'm not quite sure what to make of the Notice of Non Responsibility….I'm guessing there's a possibility of a lien against the business that the property owner is protecting themselves from. Doesn't sounds good.

It's too bad they weren't even able to last a year.

San Diego, CA 92111

The old Tan Ky Mi Gia will become Tim Ky Noodle:

At least that's what the sign says…..

IMG_6107

IMG_6108Cathy mentioned some new signage was up to me in a text, so I went to check things out. Tim Ky?

Anyway, I know quite a few people were a bit shocked when Tan Ky closed at the end of August.

The sign says they are reopening this month…so we'll see. Notice how they kept the same color sign?

9330 Mira Mesa Blvd #A
San Diego, CA 92126

The Missus current favorite coffee:

While doing a short Trolley Brewery crawl with Candice; we stopped at Bird Rock Coffee Roasters in Little Italy. They had an interesting v60….with Haraaz Red Maraqaha. At almost $9, whew was it pricey.Though after tasting it; the smooth, berry flavors, the tongue coating richness with a nice clean finish. It's really a bit too smooth for me, but this is exactly what the Missus loves…..so I bought 8 ounces of beans – $21.95! Ouch!

IMG_6049

That's ok though, since She really, really enjoyed, well I should say enjoys this as She's sent me back to pick up more. I'm sure She'll savor it while it lasts.

And then there are the signs…….

Here's the ATM at Toronado.

This sign always makes me smile………

2015 Rose Parade float decorating and a lunch at Brodard Restaurant

mmm-yoso!!! is a blog of food, events, events with food and other reasons to share what we (Kirk, Ed (from Yuma) and Cathy) eat.  Today Cathy is writing about an event and also a meal, which did not occur on the same day…

Last Saturday, The Mister and I once again volunteered for "dry decorating" some of the floats which will participate in the 126th Tournament of Roses Rose Parade.  A variety of materials are used… IMG_4486IMG_4448
IMG_4440Covering every exposed part of every float with organic material is achieved with various glues… IMG_4457Really, the day is more "Detail Decorating"… IMG_4498IMG_4508IMG_4499
IMG_4495
Peas, lentils, beans, poppy seeds as well as bark, pulverized dried flour petals and cinnamon are the majority of materials used on these decorating days-December Saturdays before Christmas Day. IMG_4472IMG_4409IMG_4403
IMG_4441IMG_4428IMG_4666_2
IMG_4456IMG_4421IMG_4422IMG_4669
IMG_4426
IMG_4475IMG_4504
Long day, with much accomplished by about 450 volunteers and yet so much more to do.  Intensive decorating with live flowers begins December 26 and goes through until the morning of December 31, just before judging.

Of course this blog is about food, but this day was not very interesting… IMG_4384Stopping at Cream Pan in Tustin before 7 a.m., for some karaage, an orange cream roll, a cheese crisp and, of course, a ham and cheese croissant. IMG_4459Bringing our own lunch this time, we ate on the hood of the car… IMG_4510Getting ready for the drive home, we heard traffic reports on a major accident on the 210, another one on the 5, two on the 101 and others on the 57, 71, 91 and 15, so we tried to avoid it all and ended up getting home in about four hours after having not stopped for dinner, made grilled cheese sandwiches at home and slept deeply.

So, to have some sort of interesting food for this post, The Mister and I drove North during the week…stopping for a late breakfast/early lunch in Garden Grove at Brodard. IMG_4616_2When you walk in, there is an area to order 'To Go' items and snacks…
IMG_4620IMG_4617_2Along the side of this ordering area, you can see the ladies making the famous nem nuong…IMG_4658_2
IMG_4660_2
Which we, of course, ordered after being seated in the already crowded restaurant…
IMG_4653_2IMG_4629_2
"Mixed order" of Nem and Chao Tom- Two pork paste and two shrimp paste ($8) Spring rolls were brought out almost immediately.IMG_4645What makes these Spring rolls special is, that in addition to the fresh lettuce, cucumber, carrot, daikon, cilantro and mint wrapped tightly in rice paper, there is a folded piece of crispy fried egg roll skin in the center of each fresh roll. IMG_4643The 'house special sauce', served warm (I believe it is made with pork and pork broth and maybe some honey) also make these Spring rolls unique.
IMG_4639_2
Another item ordered was the simple and tasty Gou du du bo kho, Gan Chay (papaya salad, $6). Made with both beef jerky and smoked pork liver, the version here is a favorite.  The two sauces, one a spicy vinaigrette and the other more soy based, are served on the side and mixed to our preference when we eat the salad…

Again, we try a 'new to us' item at most restaurants and this time it was… IMG_4647_2Banh Hoi Chao Tom (angel hair vermicelli sheets topped with grilled shrimp paste and served with greens and a lime chili fish sauce) ($8.95) IMG_4652
This was a delightful surprise! The dry, delicate noodles were just the thing to go with the various wrappings and good amount of grilled shrimp paste.  We could have ordered this with whole shrimp, BBQ pork, grilled beef or nem nuong, or (as we will do next time) order the Banh Hoi Brodard- the toppings are grilled chicken, BBQ pork, grilled whole shrimp, grilled shrimp paste, pork sausage and egg roll, for only $2 more.

Midweek Meanderings: Pho DaKao, Hana Mart, and Voltero’s (I think) closes. The sign for Dumpling Inn and Shanghai Saloon is up and other stuffs….

A fairly large collection for a SoCal winter Wednesday.

Pho DaKao and Grill Closes:

IMG_5997

IMG_5998I drove by and noticed the parking lot was totally empty so I drove in. The Eviction Restoration Notice was posted on the door. Man, this place didn't last very long. I think I visited soon after they opened….so they pulled the plug pretty fast.

5296 University Ave
San Diego, CA 92105

Hana Mart officially closes:

Speaking of pretty fast. No surprise really, after seeing how empty the place was. I guess the new owners couldn't pull it off. Too bad the place couldn't gain any traction. I drove past and noticed an auction sign and a couple of days later, the place looks abandoned.

IMG_6050

I'm wondering what happened to Happy Family?

4611 Mercury St
San Diego, CA 92111

Is Voltero's Closed?:

I'd driven past a couple of times and the place looked closed so I stopped by earlier in the week.

12162014 001

This former Balboa Avenue institution moved to this location back in the summer of 2013. It's too bad that the renovation and creation of chain restaurant hell drove them from their old location and it seems that they barely made it past a year here. Though never a destination for me, I'd eaten at the old location a couple of times and thought it decent…….

So hopefully I'm mistaken? But it sure looks like they've shut down….

4344 Convoy St
San Diego, CA 92111

So here comes the "New" Dumpling Inn and Shanghai Saloon:

Hopefully better than the "old" Dumpling Inn, but I doubt it.

12162014 002

12162014 003While never great shakes, the place really "jumped the shark" in my opinion after the owner got involved with The Dragon's Den and Del Mar Rendezvous, both of which have been sold. So now we get this…….. I'm told he has a taste for "fusion", which is great, remember, I'm from the home of Pacific Rim Cuisine, so I love fusion…..but it's a thin line between fusion and "con-fusion".

In the old First Korean Market location.

San Diego, CA 92111

Other stuffs……

We had some much needed rain over the last two weeks……..and we're kind of enjoying the nice sleeping weather, which would be great if I wasn't working so many long hours.

Still, I actually saw a double rainbow while driving to Target on the way home yesterday. Pardon the bad photos.

A rare San Diego double rainbow

IMG_6063Seeing a rainbow in San Diego is rare enough….a double rainbow, well I don't ever recall seeing one here.

So I took a photo….then took photos of other folks taking photos of the double rainbow…..like I said, this is like an event.

Or maybe a celebrity? This guy is having his picture taken "with" the rainbow! No selfies here….though I did pass two couple taking selfies with the rainbow.

You gotta love it!

IMG_6065

I hope you kept dry and safe during the rain!

Noodling Around: 777 Noodle House and Minh Ky revisited

Well, like I mentioned a couple of weeks back it's finally starting to feel like soup weather…..San Diego soup weather that is. And if any day this year felt perfect for a bowl of noodle soup it was today.

From the angry clouds early this morning.

IMG_6010

To the rain, which was falling pretty heavily this evening. Now why did I feel a bit uncomfortable seeing a car from the "Governor's Office of Emergency Services" in the next lane? I dunno…..

IMG_6012

In need of some noodle soup I headed off to….

777 Noodle House:

Instead of going for my usual Hu Tieu Nam Vang Kho, I went with Pork Intestine Egg Noodle Soup, a relative bargain at $5.77.

777 Noodling 01

This looked good, but the broth was a bit weak this time around. Lots of nice, funky, pork intestine though and the noodles had a nice chew to them. I'm not sure when it happened, but somewhere along the line over the last 9 years, pork intestine has become comfort food for me. Go figure……

777 Noodle House
4686 University Avenue
San Diego, CA 92105

A few days back I was craving some Beef Sate Egg Noodle "dry". My usual "go-to" would have been Tan Ky Mi Gia in Mira Mesa, but of course, they've closed down. So instead, I headed over to….

Minh Ky:

It had been over a year since I last visited. I'm not a big fan of the parking situation, nor the crowds when the place is busy, but I had to have my Beef Sate Noodle with soup on the side.

Minh Ky Noodle 01

Minh Ky Noodle 02

Minh Ky Noodle 03The portion size just seemed to be much larger than I remembered. No surprises here except the bowl of soup, which is usually fairly salty, seemed even more so today. In fact, one of the guys on the table to my right ordered the same thing and poured half his glass of water into the broth to water it down….which I think would really make it kind of yucky. I just ended up dipping my noodles into the broth tsukemen style at first, then puring off small amounts over the oodles and meat at the end. The sate could have bit more "umph", but it was adequately tender, more onion-shallot-nuttiness in flavor, but pretty much just what I wanted on this day.

I hope everyone is safe and dry this evening.

Pho Hut and Grill

It seems that Pho Hut opened while we were away on vacation. Didn't hear much…..or make that nothing about the place. I guess folks are just plain focused on all the places opening on the blocks East of here. Well of course I had to check them out….

Pho Hut 01

This used to be Quiznos, which I don't has fared quite well over the last couple of years. I believe we need some good independently owned west of the 805, so this was, at least for me, a welcomed sight. The interior has been redone, in what I call "modern pho"…..that is, it is clean (should be because it's new, right?), simply done, sort of like Pho 46 or The Pho Shop. Of course, the standard issue televisions were present and accounted for as well.

Pho Hut 02

I believe the owner also owns Pho Nam Cali in National City.

You know what I ordered, right? Looking at the location and then the menu I knew that this shop catered to more western sensibilities with regards to pho….in other words you won't find every combination of protein for pho on the menu. It's basically 8 variations, including Pho Filet. i just went with the Dac Biet. A small will set you back $7.50.

I didn't anticipate much in the way of garnishes and my expectations were met.

Pho Hut 03

Pho Hut 04

Pho Hut 05The broth looked disappointing, fairly cloudy, a bit too defatted. Almost no nose to speak of, very faint beef, no anise, savory-onionyness. The flavor was quite salty, but very flat after that. The portion looked quite small, which is fine since the broth was too salty to finish, even after touching it up with lime to cut the sodium.

The clumped noodles were quite good with a nice stretch.

As for the proteins….tripe MIA, the rare steak really tough and overcooked by the time the bowl hit the table….need to order this on the side. The tendon was good, soft and close to that buttery texture I like. The brisket was tasty and well prepared. Not much meat in the bowl though.

Not really a good value in my book. The guy running the front was very nice though. Quite friendly and efficient.

Since the place is close to home and work, it was easy enough to make multiple visits. Wasn't sure what to order on my second go around. I saw the Goi Cuon on my previous visit and it really didn't seem like something I'd enjoy here.

So I started with the Bò nướng hành ($6.50) – basically Grilled Beef Rolled around onions.

Pho Hut 06

The fragrance was nice, the beef a bit on the tough side, but well flavored – sweet-salty, very straight forward teriyaki/bulgogi like. The onions were mild and overall this was a pretty good choice. The nuoc mam cham was on the mild side and the portion is gringo sized.

I also ordered the Bun with Pork, Shrimp, and Cha Gio ($9.95). Again, this seemed a bit on the pricey side.

Pho Hut 07

Pho Hut 08Too much filler in the standard issue egg rolls, but the grilld pork was nicely flavored and not too tough. The shrimp seemed a bit overcooked. This looked like a pretty large bowl and I thought it was going to be a total carb bomb. However, half of the bottom was filled with lettuce. So in terms of being a salad…..well, this was pretty good. The bun was prepared perfectly as well. I did have to ask for more nuoc mam cham for this. A fairly expensive lunch, but not bad.

As I mentioned earlier, the guy working here was very nice and service was fine. So…….third time's the charm, right?

Plus, I did want to try the Fried Chicken Wings ($6.95), actually butter wings.

Pho Hut 09

Not quite top notch, the fry job wasn't perfect and the skin wasn't as crisp as I would like. The seasoning left a bit to be desired, more pungent flavors, even, gasp, more salt! It was super hot, though there seemed to be a bit of "seepage", that is a lot of the meat had dark pigment, which made me wonder about how this was handled when freezing.

I finally took a good look at pages other than the first two on the menu and noticed Phnom Penh Noodle Soup ($7.95) under "Specialty Noodle Soups"….wow, one of my favorites. So I ordered it.

Pho Hut 11

Pho Hut 10In retrospect, I sould have known better. I mean, how many Pho shops do you know that serve a good Hu Tieu Nam Vang? From the unblanched bean sprouts…..a good indication of the portion size is the bean sprouts in relation to the soup spoon.

The noodles were Banh Pho, not Hu Tieu. The meat, what what there was; was dry and flavorless chicken breast, standard issue meat balls, and shrimp, which actually wasn't bad. I actually had to bust out the chili paste to dip the pieces of chicken in.

The broth was terrible, bland and insipid. Bad move on my part. Lesson learned.

Pho Hut 12

Pho Hut 13So there you go. New place, nice and clean…..really nice folks, but "pho not to offend". Honestly, there are worse places for pho in the area, but that's not really a reason to laud yet another mediocre bowl, right?

Phuong Trang (revisits)

Thanks again for dropping by mmm-yoso!!!, food blog.  Kirk is catching up at work, Ed (from Yuma) is catching up at home and today Cathy is catching up with a post of many visits to the same place. {Admittedly this was because it is air conditioned and this summer was brutal}

Go to the top left corner of this blog.  In the box under the words "Site Search", fill in Phuong Trang.  There are more than 170 results: we've written about it a lot.

Phoung Trang is the place where The Mister and/or I take people who are new to Vietnamese food.  Kirk has called the food here 'middle of the road' and not offensive.   The selections are multiple, food is good, prices are fair, the restaurant is clean and almost every table orders the wings. IMG_7061The signage is new, as Kirk mentioned in this August post.IMG_8748The interior has not changed and is kept very clean. IMG_1590IMG_1588The Mister and I order hot tea with every meal; 75¢ per person, made with loose leaves. The jasmine flavor is brisk and bright. Once you order, the proper tableware is brought out.IMG_8750Pho ($6.50) comes with the usual sides.  That sauce is for my whole fish (2nd photo below).IMG_8754The broth has a light anise flavor, the meats are plenty, flavorful, tender.  Noodles are usually not in a clump and a regular/small bowl is filling.IMG_8756IMG_8764The whole fish here is reasonable ($8.95), fried properly with seasoning, quite large and meaty.IMG_0796IMG_0797  Mi Dac Biet ($8.50) is the House Special Noodle Soup (in this case, mi-egg noodle instead of rice noodle).  A wonderful chicken broth and filled with calamari, shrimp, ground and cha siu pork, imitation crab and chicken.  It's served in the extra large bowl and can be a meal to share. IMG_0798IMG_0803Banh Uot Dac Biet ($8.75), steamed rice noodles with steamed bean sprouts, shredded cucumber, carmelized onion, garlic slices and fish sauce with the 'Dac Biet' meat combination of Vietnamese ham, salami, shredded pork and char grilled pork.  This is very refreshing and a nice change from Bun dishes, with a different noodle and served on a plate without lettuces under the noodle.IMG_7047The Bo Bia ($4.75) can be a meal.  Chinese sausage and fried egg with lettuce, carrots, dried shrimp, jicama, basil, crushed peanuts and chili sauce wrapped in rice paper is a much more interesting selection than some of the other rolls here or anywhere.IMG_7056One recent order was Mi Xao Ga (chicken and vegetables with crispy noodle) ($8.25), which has become a new craving.IMG_7053 One summer resolution has been trying Bo Tai Chanh (lemon beef salad) ($10.50) whenever I see it on a menu. The version here is served over lettuce, is different than other versions and was, in comparison, kind of dull.  The vegetables were fresh, there was a definite lemon flavor to the thinly sliced beef, but I wouldn't order it from here again.IMG_1599Finally in September we succumbed to every table around us and ordered the Canh Ga Chien Bo (garlic chicken wings with butter)…but just a half order ($5.75).  These were crispy and had good flavor with a good meat to skin ratio.IMG_1595Because we enjoy the crispy noodles, here's a photo of Mi Xao Bo (crispy noodle with beef and vegetables) (also $8.25).  It's just as good with any of the meats…because, you know…fried noodle.IMG_1594IMG_1597The newest discovery made here was from the appetizer menu- Cha Dum (steamed meatloaf) ($7.25) served with shrimp chips, the steamed seasoned ground beef mixed with glass noodles, peanuts and peas is a wonderful combination of flavor and texture.

It's been fun to try out new to us menu items. I hope your week is going well.

Pho Hiep and Grill (Chula Vista)

Thanks for bookmarking mmm-yoso!!! a food blog.  Kirk is checking off lists of things to do, Ed(from Yuma) is marking off his calendar of errands and Cathy is following a timetable on the computer, interspersing Continuing Education classes online with writing about food.

Here's a quick post about a meal at the Telegraph Canyon Chula Vista location of Pho Hiep Grill, which has been open since 2008.  The Linda Vista location and its food has been mentioned within or as the main of at least nine posts on this blog and there is a third, Eastlake Chula Vista location.  CC has been to both Pho Hiep and Grill's Chula Vista locations (and from her posts, it looks like she has tried almost the entire menu).

IMG_0730 This location has the same or maybe a bit less seating than the Linda Vista store, but the parking situation is much better.  This mall is anchored by a Vons store, but Pho Hiep and Grill is more East, closer to the McDonald's in the parking lot. IMG_0719 Seating was prompt and hot tea ($1 each) was brought out in individual cups and not a pot. A bit different than the other location.IMG_0727 The interior is newer and more modern.  Very neat and clean. IMG_0726 The Mister ordered the Bo Kho (beef stew) ($7.50).  The version here is very very good. The deceptively deep bowl was overfilled with beef, tendon and vegetables and the bread was warm, crispy and fluffy.  Very fresh and very good.  Seasoning was notable for slight (and not strong) anise.IMG_0722Continuing with my 'lemon beef salad' quest of the summer, I was slightly disappointed to see it was not offered here, however a lemon chicken salad (Goi Ga) ($7) was listed, so this was my order.  Again, prepared differently than all the other Vietnamese restaurants.  Large slices of white meat chicken cooked in a spiced lemon broth and served on crispy fresh sliced cabbage with a dressing of fried garlic, basil and topped with peanuts. This was served with shrimp chips, which just completed the flavor grouping.

Another great, interesting version. I'm glad I stumbled upon this new to me  menu item and decided to try it whenever I saw it (or a similar version) on a menu this year.

Have a great week!

Saigon Vietnamese Restaurant (revisit)(City Heights)

mmm-yoso!!!, a blog about food and sometimes interspersed with other stories.  This isn't anything about another story, it's just about food.  Kirk is taking a breather, Ed(from Yuma) is putting his feet up and Cathy is at the computer, settling back and sharing a meal while taking a Continuing Education class online.

This summer had some hot and humid days when eating out *any*where with air conditioning was the only criterion.  In August, while being seated at Pho Pasteur Anh Hong, I noted a salad on another table, asked our waiter what it was and ordered it: Lemon Beef.  I *really* liked that version and decided to try 'Lemon Beef Salad' at each Vietnamese Restaurant this summer.IMG_0114IMG_0092Saigon Restaurant has been located on El Cajon Boulevard, across from Hoover High School, for about ten years now.  Here is a link to Kirk's 2006 visit.  Here is a link to one of my visits.  That building on the next corner with the 1950's architecture overhanging what looks to be a parking lot is a drive through Dry Cleaners, one of few left in the city.

The interior of Saigon is simple and unchanged for all these years.  There are about 12 eight-person round tables as well as another 30 or so square four person tables; quite large inside.  There are also two televisions (which aren't always turned on) and a gigantic (five feet tall by eight feet long by three feet wide) fish tank filled with Koi.IMG_0096 Why I was here- the lemon beef salad (Bo Than Chanh) ($10.90).  You can see pieces of pale colored (i.e freshly cooked by lemon juice) thin sliced beef along with various sliced vegetables (carrot, cucumber, daikon radish, onion) and no lettuce.  The flavors were reminiscent of Kirk's Thai Beef Salad without any chilis or heat.  The beef reminded The Mister of unseasoned larb.  I tried various combinations of condiments from the tabletop tray, but it wasn't quite right, as far as heat goes- the beef seemed 'plain'.  Everything was fresh and 'sparkling' with flavor, but overall, it lacked something.   IMG_0103 Another reason I was here- the Nem Nuong ($5.50).  I still haven't posted about it, but after two trips to Brodard, I have been on a search for Summer rolls as fresh and good as are made there.  The Nem Nuong here are very good- the beef has flavor, the lettuce fresh and crispy but far too many rice noodles and not enough of other vegetables. On the plus side, these were tightly wrapped. IMG_0104

The Mister ordered beef stew (Bo Kho) ($9) and this tasted really great; nice spices within the 'gravy' and many soft tendon pieces.  It was fresh and satisfying.

Hope the week ahead is good for you!
