Taichung – Taichung Second Market, Taichung Sixth Market, and a Visit to Dawncake

For our stay in Taichung, I selected Le Meridian. The rooms were the most comfortable of all the places we stayed at in Taiwan.

IMG_6682

And there was a vast and good breakfast buffet.

IMG_6690
IMG_6690

The variety was quite impressive. A nice variety of Western and Asian dishes.

IMG_6686
IMG_6686
IMG_6686

You were provided with a card for your table. You left it on the "green" side for when you went exploring for food…..

IMG_6693

And then flipped it to "red" when you were done to let the folks know they could clear your table.

IMG_6695

We enjoyed our breakfasts here.

IMG_6691

We enjoyed our time here.

Unlike the other places we'd be visiting, I hadn't made any plans for our full day here. We had one destination in mind for the day, we needed to get some pineapple cake from Dawncake for my MIL. And while Miyahara was owned by Dawncake, we decided to walk on over to the main store on Taiwan Boulevard.

During our walk it seemed like Taichung is a bit spread out and there was only 1 MRT line in the city at the time of our visit. So, we didn't do much except explore. Like in other cities in Taiwan we found an interesting contrast of the modern and stylish….

IMG_6698

With the old…..

IMG_6703

As the architecture seemed to change on every block on this portion of Taiwan Boulevard.

There were many alleyways winding their way around, with some of them specializing in electronic shops or hot pot and the like…..

IMG_6702

There also seemed to be a large number of 24 hour arcades in the area.

IMG_6699

One of the places the folks at the hotel and the Missus's Instagram searches recommended we visit was Taichung Second Market. While we weren't very hungry due to just finishing breakfast, we headed on over to have a look.

IMG_6720

During the Japanese Colonial Period, this was known as Shintomichō, a high-end shopping area.

Now it's known as a place to get "good grindz"………

IMG_6708
IMG_6708

And as we soon learned, lines are usually a good thing in Taiwan and they can move pretty fast, like at this Lu Rou Fan stand.

IMG_6715

There's quite a variety of food available.

IMG_6713

Along with the expected produce, seafood, and meat purveyors.

IMG_6711

Taichung Second Market
No. 87, Section 2, Sanmin Rd.
Central District, Taichung City, Taiwan

We stopped for a short tea break.

IMG_6721

Where the Missus noticed a super long line going down around the block. She went to investigate and I crossed the street to take a photo.

IMG_6718

Apparently, this is a very popular place selling Castella Cake, named Banshin Castella Cake.

IMG_6719

Yep, those lines……

All of this and it was just after 9 am!

We headed further up Taiwan Boulevard, to the rather modern Xitun District, full of office towers and high rises.

IMG_6742 IMG_6755  We came across what looked like a hotel….it turned out to be the Splendor Hotel, with a bunch of vendors selling all sorts of plants and crafts. The Missus read one of the signs and noticed that the building is called "Park Lane" and on the third floor was something called "Taichung Sixth Market". Since it was still early and Dawncake didn't open until 10 we decided to check the place out.

We caught the elevator up to the third flood and arrived at what I'll call a very modern food hall/market of sorts. There were some food stands but they weren't open yet.

IMG_6724

IMG_6723

IMG_6728

Like I mentioned earlier; we were struck by the contrasts of the old (Second Market) and the new.

While all the food stands were closed, we found this tea booth.

IMG_6735

The young man working the stand was so kind and friendly. The Missus loves Her tea and he took the time out to explain the source and flavors of all the tea; which was from his family's farm in Alishan and told us to have a seat.

IMG_6731

He proceeded to make us multiple samples of each! Telling us to take our time and enjoy.

IMG_6733

It was such a nice experience and we bought a couple of bags of tea.

IMG_6729

We'll make sure to return if we're back in Taichung!

Taichung Sixth Market (in Park Lane by Splendor)
403 Jianxing Rd.
West District, Taichung City, Taiwan

By now it was after 10am and Dawncake was open.

IMG_6744

The Missus's Mom enjoys pineapple cake, so we decided to pick some up on every stop during our trip. Dawncake is probably the best known brand from Taichung.

IMG_6751
IMG_6751

The shop is large and bright. We were given some samples and the Missus got Her Mom a box.

Meanwhile, I came across something I had seen the previous night at Miyahara.

IMG_6746

And this time I just had to get it.

IMG_6747

It's actually tea that is sold in what could pass as an album cover. So, the Missus got more tea and I got that wonderful album cover…because "I'm forever missing them….."

Taichung – Dinner at Wow Cool (瓦庫燒肉)

As I mentioned in my previous post on Taipei, I hadn't realized that we'd be in Taiwan during a five day holiday weekend. So, the only rail transport I could get to our next destination, Taichung was the High Speed Rail that left at 546pm. It only took an hour to arrive at the Taichung HSR station, which was quite far from our accommodation located across from the regular train station in Taichung. On a positive note, taxi fare in Taiwan is very inexpensive by US standards and getting a cab to our hotel was a breeze.

It was dark when we arrived and we check in and headed on out. Right around the corner from the hotel is the famous Miyahara building, which is owned by Dawn Cake, a well known pineapple cake producer.

IMG_4238

The structure was once a large ophthalmology clinic owned by Miyahara Takeo during the Japanese colonial period. It has now been nicely restored with an interior that flaunts a Harry Potterish theme. The ice cream stand in the building is very popular. There was something that instantly caught our eye, which we'd end up getting at Dawn Cake's main location when we visited the next day.

IMG_6662

Of course, there was the question of "what's for dinner"? It seemed that many of the places around the hotel except for hot pot places were closed. And, at least for us, it was just too hot and muggy to even considered hot pot. So, we went decided to go for a recommendation from the taxi driver that drove us from the National Palace Museum the day before. During his conversation with the Missus he mentioned that his grand daughter lived in Taichung and also told the Missus her favorite restaurant. He also said there was one item there that once you tried there "would be no turning back" to another version again!

So, we set out looking for the place, weaving down various streets and alleyways.

IMG_6680

Folks at the hotel didn't seem to know about this place. Neither did several folks we came across at various businesses. Until one older gentleman pointed the way. Turns out the English name of the place is "Wow Cool"?!?

IMG_6678

And it's basically Yakiniku.

IMG_6664

We quickly ordered some liquid refreshment.

IMG_6668

While the Missus perused the menu. There were quite a few groups of younger folks eating piles of pork, beef, and seafood. We just can't put all that stuff away like that anymore and decided on the Wagyu cuts.

IMG_6670
IMG_6670

And a good amount of veggies….which were of good quality and tasty.

IMG_6671
IMG_6671

IMG_6674  IMG_6675 The Missus really loved the yamaimo and the meat was buttery, beefy, and so tender.

But what was so delish as to make us not be able to "turn back" once we tried it?

Well, it was the chicken stock provided for each table for free!

And my goodness, it was delici-yoso!

So full of "fowl flavor", rich, with an wonderful "tongue feel".

Who'd have thought. You walk into a yakiniku joint, only to find that the chicken broth would have you "never turning back"!

IMG_6663

This was an interesting start to our visit to Taichung.

Jollibee (Cathy’s visits)

mmm-yoso!!! , a food blog, is being written by Cathy while Kirk and His Missus are on the road.

Jollibee, a chain originating in the Philippines, is the largest and fastest growing Asian restaurant company across the globe, with 1500 locations (70 in North America).  Three are in San Diego County.   Even though burgers are on the menu, Jollibee is primarily known for its "Chickenjoy"-marinated, hand breaded chicken which is never greasy and always crisp and juicy.  IMG_3688 Each location has a Jolly Bee greeter at the door.
IMG_3689 There are some specials near the ordering area as well as online if you pre-order.

The restaurant is always clean, ordering is efficient.  As soon as you begin, there is another person or two listening and beginning to gather your choices.  By the time you pay, a tray or 'To-Go' bag is waiting.  You do have to fill your soda from the machine.
IMG_8460 A salty brown gravy is included with each chicken order.  That's a pineapple juice drink ($3.49) on the tray, which was filled from behind the counter.
IMG_8463 A three piece meal with one side -adobo rice- and beverage from the machine ($11.99).  Adobo rice is fried rice with pork.

Adobo is a method of cooking in the Philippines.  It is a braising of the 'protein' (although you can make adobo vegetables) in a marinade of five items: vinegar, garlic, bay leaf, soy sauce and peppercorns.
IMG_8463 The two piece combination with palabok ($11.99).  Palabok is rice noodles topped with a garlic-pork-shrimp sauce topped with sliced hard boiled egg; a really nice side dish.
IMG_3690 We also ordered the 'Limited Edition' fried pie ($2.99) which is coconut pineapple-large shreds of sweet coconut and chunky pieces of tangy pineapple in a flaky, buttery crust. The 'regular' pie (peach mango) is always satisfying.
IMG_6853 On another visit, I picked up two Deluxe Chicken Sandwiches ($5.99) with a side of 'crispy fries', which remained crispy on the drive home.    "Deluxe" means the sandwich has mayonnaise, lettuce and tomato.  It is served on a brioche bun.  As you can see, there was also a peach mango pie.
IMG_6853 The chicken can be regular or spicy and regular is great-meaty, juicy, crispy and very large.  Packets of Cholula are available and compliment the flavor if you change your mind and want spicy.  I'm not crazy about brioche buns, since they basically don't absorb sauces (or juice) but this was toasted and fresh and not overly bready.

Jollibee has consistently great service and serves consistently great, fresh food.  An excellent chain.

Soo wrote about Jollibee in 2021. cc wrote a couple of  Jollibee posts more than ten years ago.

Lee’s Sandwiches (Rolando)

mmm-yoso!!!, a food blog, usually has posts written by Kirk.  However, He and His Missus are enjoying each other and doing research for future posts.  Cathy is writing today.

The corner of University at 58th used to house a great little Chinese restaurant.  The Mister and I went there many times when we first moved out here in the early 1980's.  Its signage has been preserved and the area has expanded into University Square, a shopping area anchored by a Food 4 Less, 99 Cent Only store and Marshall's.IMG_3747 On this corner to the right of this famous sign, is Lee's Sandwiches, which began in 1982 as a family venture with 500 food trucks in Northern California and currently is a franchise in four states with 60 Brick and Mortar locations.IMG_8372
IMG_3573 The Menu Board includes six inch breakfast sandwiches (on baguette or a croissant) served all day.
IMG_8346 Beverages and Korean Rice dogs are available; quite a variety.
IMG_8345 Asian Sandwiches, served on ten inch baguettes as well as
IMG_3746 European Sandwiches ("American" fillings) served on a large croissant or baguette.
IMG_8343 There's also a hot food display case and some offerings on the counter.
IMG_8353The Pate Chaud ($2.75) is offered in chicken or pork and both fillings are excellent.
IMG_8673 The herbs and flavoring in the ground chicken and also in the ground pork are fresh and flavorful.  The pastry is crispy-flaky and each bite is quite nice.  The egg rolls sold from this case (five for $6) also have the same fillings and are a crispy snack.
IMG_8358 As mentioned, the breakfasts served all day are smaller.
IMG_8360 The #82, ham, bacon, egg and cheese on croissant ($5.49) was quite hearty and filling.  The six inch croissant appears to have been baked in the baguette tray, so it's the dough but not the shape of a croissant.  Everything on the sandwich is good.
IMG_8360 The #90 ($5.49) sausage, egg and cheese on a baguette was also filling.  The bread/crust ratio is good, bread is fresh baked and the sausage was a better quality than I've had in other breakfast sandwiches.

IMG_8681IMG_8683 We returned for lunch.  I've been choosing yogurt drinks lately and the mango yogurt ($6.25) was a great choice; just enough sweet from the mango chunks and tart from the yogurt.  Of course, we had to have a Lee's Cafe original (Cafe su da)($4.49).  The strong coffee and sweetened condensed milk over ice is indeed a perfected beverage.
IMG_8690 The #1-combination ($6.99) is made on a ten inch baguette and includes house pickled daikon and carrots, onion, jalapeno, cilantro, mayonnaise and soy sauce.
IMG_8700 IMG_8699 IMG_8698 Jamon-Head Cheese-Pate are the meats.

The cured ham is not smoky, the Head Cheese has a black pepper heat which is cooled by the Pate.  Each bite was a great combination of complimentary flavors.
IMG_8687 The #35  Roast Beef European ($9.49) included lettuce, tomato, mayonnaise and cheese (I was not asked which type of cheese I wanted, but the menu shows a choice of American, Swiss or Provolone).  Condiments are on the side (mustard, onion, pepperoni and pickle).  Plenty of roast beef on this fresh baked, soft crusted croissant.  Satisfying.
IMG_8350 The matcha green tea ($5.99 large) is another favorite beverage; a nice strong matcha flavor and not very sweet.

A good place to stop if you are in the neighborhood.

Brothers Family Restaurant (Grantville)

Today's mmm-yoso!!! blog post is being written by Cathy.  Thanks for stopping by to read about food.

Since the pandemic and Covid-19 restrictions, The Mister and I have had to get used to a 'new normal' with some of our favorite restaurants closing, menus and hours being pared down (so many Breakfast-Lunch only restaurants now) and prices rising.  There were so many places took for granted and I didn't even post about, thinking they would just always be there (RIP The Fancy Fish).IMG_8511 Fortunately Brothers Family Restaurant has survived, since 1994.
IMG_8485 When you walk in and see people seated at the lunch counter, know that it's a busy day and you may have to put your name on the Wait List for a table.
IMG_3681 IMG_3682
IMG_8605 From the breakfast menu, the Belgium waffle with fruit and whipped cream ($9.95) was ordered by The Mister for lunch one day (the Breakfast menu is available until 2 p.m.).  The light crispness of the waffle edges covering the puffy (not cake-like) filling is one of His cravings…plus we share our meal choices, so I was happy.  IMG_8509 The cup of soup and half sandwich ($10.99).  I chose roast beef on rye toast and the Soup of the Day was vegetable beef.  Two different types of beef and each very flavorful- the large chunks of stew pieces with the still slightly crisp vegetables in a strong beefy broth really hit the spot.  The sandwich came with lettuce and tomato and mayonnaise and the meal was quite filling.
IMG_8609 The Half Tuna Salad ($11.99) was my choice another day.  The tuna salad is lightly seasoned with finely chopped celery, very little mayonnaise and some fresh herbs.  It is basically all tuna, which I like.  Served on lettuce with tomato and a sliced hard boiled egg, the house made Thousand Island dressing pulls every bite together with great flavors.  This 1/2 size is a good size meal.
IMG_8501 The French Dip ($14.99) is served with a choice of sides, so, of course, The Mister chose onion rings.  Nice, crisp batter surrounding whole onion ring slices (you know, made here and not frozen).  The thin slices of warm roast beef were served on a very soft, freshly toasted French roll.  The au jus is not salty and has some herbs for flavoring.  Quite nice.
IMG_8607 On days when the Soup of the Day is clam chowder, a bowl is ordered ($5.99).  Thick, creamy, some chopped potatoes and plenty of clam meat as well as clam juice, this is a great choice.  Soup bowls are served with a half slice of that soft French Roll made into a crisp topped garlic bread; delightful.

Sam Woo-breakfasts

Well, you are here, reading mmm-yoso!!!, a food blog.  Here's another post by Cathy, who is writing while Kirk and His Missus are busy and not writing.

In the hallway of the 'original' (to San Diego) 99 Ranch location, is Sam Woo BBQ.  We try to eat a meal before grocery shopping (anywhere) and 99 Ranch is a regular stop.  The last time I wrote about breakfasts here was one year ago, so here's an update.

IMG_8299
IMG_3733 The menu is the same and the price of each item has increased by $1, to $8.50.
9860F95A-F049-4E81-8B1A-EF3CF9998E34 Coffee (accompanied by sweetened condensed milk) remains at 70¢,
IMG_3629 as does the hot tea.

0262EBE9-CE06-4F76-A946-C10D231E15A1 This is #3, Fried Noodles with Bean Sprouts and Soy Sauce; always satisfying having a crunch for breakfast.  #1 and #2 are also noodle dishes.
IMG_8287 #31, all the way at the bottom of the menu, Fried Rice w/ Lunch Meat, is the only rice offered at breakfast and has a wonderful, smokey 'wok hei' flavor along with the "Spam", egg and peas and carrots.  Sometimes we will order it just to we can take home for lunch.
0262EBE9-CE06-4F76-A946-C10D231E15A1 #10, Shrimp Dumpling Noodle Soup, is quite satisfying.  The dumplings are quite large, with pork and shrimp and the bok choy and egg noodles are satisfying to round out the meal.
82953F89-EBE5-421F-B26E-0EC197433A10 #8, Fish Filet Porridge, is almost always ordered just because it's a comfort-breakfast food.
66A723B4-5067-44FD-959A-52CAEBDDAF9B You can order a Chinese Donut ($2), which is made fresh (used to have to run across the hallway to buy one at the 99Ranch steam trays ) and it is freshly fried.
IMG_8293 Tearing the crisp, airy donut into the porridge brings up the comfort food factor.

82953F89-EBE5-421F-B26E-0EC197433A10 #23, Roast Duck Lo Mein, is a great savory item.  The herby and savory 'soup' is just perfect for dipping both the duck and the noodles.
70361609846__8A7B4FC0-552D-49D4-8E32-3C02B1BF6150 #24, BBQ Pork Lo Mein, is also a good choice on some days.  It all depends on what you are craving.

Sam Woo BBQ 7330 Clairmont Mesa Blvd San Diego 92111 (858) 505-9888 open daily 9-9
IMG_8301 The hot food display window is filled in the morning.  The steam tray choices next to it are 'To-Go' or you can eat at one of the two tables in front of the display.

Soo was here in 2020 and had nice meals.

Black Bear Diner (El Cajon) (breakfast) (again)

mmm-yoso!!!, a food blog, is, again, being written by Cathy while Kirk and His Missus are out of town.

I wrote about the "new" Black Bear Diner in May of 2019 and it's time for an update.  This franchise has 156 locations in 14 states (primarily in California and all are West of the Mississippi).  The El Cajon location is still the only one in San Diego County.IMG_3680 The exterior design is themed.
IMG_8434 The interior also looks like you are inside a cabin.

IMG_3677 IMG_3679 IMG_3678 The menu is a printed 'newspaper'.

We took a while to decide on our meals and our waiter was very patient.  The coffee ($3.89) is a good quality and kept refilled.
IMG_8438 The Mister chose the waffle "Bear's Choice" ($13.79) with the optional upgrade of the sausage patties ($1.99)(the kitchen makes their own).  The eggs were perfectly over easy, the sweet cream waffle is more cake-like (denser interior) and served with warm syrup.  The sausage patties are wonderful; menu states mild or spicy Italian and the mild flavor is just right for breakfast.
IMG_8442 I chose the Shasta Scramble ($13.99) with grits and added "loaded" ($1.99).  The Scramble had spinach, tomato, onion, bell pepper and Jack cheese, topped with slices of avocado.  The menu stated it was two eggs, but those must be the extra-large size, since this scramble was quite filling.  All of the vegetables were quite flavorful/fresh.  The grits were a tasty porridge of cornmeal and the 'loaded' part was cheese and bacon.  Sometimes I only want salt, pepper and butter on my grits, but this topping made them special and more flavorful.

A great place for breakfast.  I'll be writing a post about the lunch and dinner menu soon.

Soo was also here in 2019.

Seafood Cove #2 (Westminster)(Dim Sum)

Here you are, reading mmm-yoso!!!  Cathy is writing the food adventure for today.  Kirk is elsewhere, with His Missus.

It was early on a Sunday and The Mister and I started driving North with the intention of having another Brodard breakfast.  At some point, I remembered this breakfast from October  and told The Mister to look for 'Dim Sum' on his phone.  Siri sent us one more exit West to this crowded-before-9 a.m. parking lot. BE90B1D5-2E40-43DC-94CF-F7A1D09317CB

5129DCF5-1DE1-4016-A466-B8659D12C4FD Shrimp Noodle Roll ($5.99) came from a cart and was filled with large, plump, flavor filled shrimp.  Slippery and  satisfying.EE4CDDEE-6C55-473C-B7FC-374B26951856 Our order from the kitchen (each item $5.99) was delivered quickly.  The Shrimp Har Gow was filled with the same large shrimp and wrapped in a not too thick nor too chewy tapioca based dough.
0FC12B8B-24C9-40BC-B44D-87A67A2C8125 The steamed Tofu Skin Roll was filled with pork, carrot, mushroom and crunchy water chestnuts.
0FC12B8B-24C9-40BC-B44D-87A67A2C8125 The Black Mushroom Sui Mai was really tasty.  The Sui Mai filling (pork/shrimp/ginger/mushroom/scallion/water chestnut) was a large serving size to facilitate holding the large black mushroom.  Flavors in every bite!
9300F268-B5DD-44FE-91FA-ECB3A570842C We ordered  the soup dumplings from a cart.  None were leaking.  The dough was chewy, especially at the top folds but overall the filling was quite nice.

3010E1D1-5DF7-4523-AE44-B2A2FFDC495F The picture menu  had this "Sweet Tofu-available only on Saturday-Sunday", so I had to order it.  What a great way to end the meal!  Soft, warm, fresh made tofu served with a sugar-ginger  sauce. It was quite perfect.

Todo Sushi (Scripps Ranch)

mmm-yoso!!! is the name of this food blog.  Cathy is writing while Kirk and His Missus are researching.

A few weeks ago, I met a client at her workplace in Scripps Ranch.  When following Siri's directions and looking for parking, I noticed this restaurant, which was new to me but has apparently been here since 2007.

70154332972__6D9AE531-D7AF-4F52-96C8-5D414D66D5B0
IMG_7817 There is seating outdoors in front as well as inside tables and there is a lengthy counter for the sushi bar.

IMG_3650 IMG_3649 IMG_3648
The menu is pretty basic.

IMG_8416 I ordered the Shrimp and Veggie tempura appetizer ($9.95) to check out the frying technique here.  The veggies (two each of green bean, onion, carrot and potato) were battered and the two shrimp were also dipped in bread crumbs.  The tempura sauce (soy, sugar seaweed and bonita flakes) (each sauce is made here and ingredients listed on the menu under the “Glossary of Sauces”) was a perfect compliment to the crisp, non-greasy fry.

IMG_8413 I ordered the "Modern Sashimi Salad" ($15.95).  Assorted sashimi (tuna and salmon this day)-(a very large amount) topped with the House dressing (soy sauce, sugar, vinegar, onion and black pepper) on top of a crisp spring mix.  This was a wonderful choice.  Fresh, flavorful and plenty; I will order again.

IMG_8419 The Mister ordered the Tonkatsu Bento from the Lunch Special menu($13.95).  {Lunch specials served from 11 until 4:30} Breaded pork topped with a ponzu sauce (bonito flakes, soy, seaweed and citrus juice), rice, salad and tempura.  The pork was cooked about 30 seconds too long and was a bit dry but not terrible; the breading was not burned or too crisp.  It was on top of some sautéed cabbage, carrot and onion which was quite flavorful.
IMG_8408 The lunch special came with a good quality miso.  Hot tea (as I always order) was a quality green with the grass-like flavor that I like and no charge.

We will stop by to try more of the menu when back in the area.

Kumo Japanese Sandos

**** Kumo has closed

The Missus has been a fan of Japanese Supermarket Sandos ever since our visits to Japan. Strangely, I don’t have a post on the sandwiches we’ve gotten from Lawson over the years. Perhaps we just gobble them up too fast. And of course, the egg salad version has been quite hyped up; especially after this Tweet all those years ago.

The Missus’s preference is the Katsu Sando of the pork variety and after trying out the Katsu Sando at EE Nami She was looking forward to what Kumo had to offer. I was just waiting for the place to finally open. Which they did, though on weekends only. I hopped on down and took a look at the menu and had to deliver the bad news to the Missus, they didn’t do tonkatsu; only chicken katsu sandos. Which the Missus really didn’t want. The line on that day was rather long so I decided to wait until after our trip to Taiwan when the shop would have more regular hours.

Kumo 01 Kumo 02  When I finally had another opportunity, I arrived just as the very friendly young lady was folding up the blinds on the front door. And as during the soft opening, only one party is allowed inside the shop at once. I recall seeing chicken karaage on the menu when I did my aborted visit, but that was no longer offered. There are four sandwiches on the erase board menu; chicken katsu, menchi katsu, egg salad, and fruit and cream.

And since I had actually made it in the door, I decided to order the three savory sandwiches and split them with JeffP back in the office.

Like I said, the young lady working was very nice. I ordered and was told to wait outside for my sandwiches.

I was intrigued to know that the bread came from MamMoth Bakery. We’ve been to their location in Marukai (now Tokyo Central) in Gardena.

A few minutes later my sandwiches were ready and I headed back to the office.

You want to see what $40 of sandwiches looks like from Kumo? Have a gander.

So how were they? Well, let’s go from “first to worst”.

For me the best was the Egg Salad ($12).

Kumo 09 Kumo 10  Compared to the Japanese version; this was chopped too coarse, there wasn’t enough mayo. There was a bit too much black pepper and it edged on the sweeter side. Liked the visual of the quarter tamago. The bread was slightly moist, but a bit too firm and chewy for me. Like I said before, I prefer my shokupan fluffier and softer.

The breading was not good on the Menchi Katsu ($13) as it was peeling off and soggy. The patty was very thin and overly chewy. This threw the bread to protein ration off in my opinion.

Kumo 06  Kumo 06b  It was also quite dry. This did the bread no favors. There was some flavor though it was quite mild. I could have used with a bit more katsu sauce to added a nice savory-umami-sweetness to things. It’s a sad day when I think that the shredded cabbage is the best part of the sandwich.

And yet, the Chicken Katsu Sando ($13) was our least favorite. I was thrilled to see that it was chicken thigh which would usually mean more flavor, but not in this case as it was rubbery and very bland. Look at the color of the breading.

Kumo 08  Kumo 07 Which was soggy and peeling off the protein. Man, this was not good eats at all. It seems that the only thing I could taste was the katsu sauce. Again it was the cabbage that was the headliner of the sandwich, bummer!

I spoke to JeffP a bit later and got his thoughts…..not surprisingly, his first to worse was the same!

It’s kind of sad, I was really looking forward to this place opening. I’m hoping that they do improve. But for now, I’m sticking with Sue’s next door when I’m in the area.
