Back to the Routine. Revisits to Taisho, Tiger Tiger, and Zarlitos.

As I've mentioned in other posts, the past year, now year and a half has gone by in a flash. Our schedules have made it difficult at times to get back into our routines. Finally, after several trips, a heck of a lot of work, things are settling down. And we're getting back to those places that need no introduction for those who've been reading our little blog over the years.

The "Ramen Sausage" was the oddest sounding item we came across. It turned out to be delicious. The sausage kind of had the flavor of a chicken-ramen broth. It was a nice surprise as we were ready to not like it.

Santa Barbara – Stearns Wharf and Lunch at Barbareño

We had driven up to Santa Barbara to relax and enjoy ourselves. It was a bit on the warm side when we visited, but we had really enjoyed the previous afternoon and especially dinner at Yoichi's. On this day; well, I made dinner reservations, but not much else. We woke and decided to drive down to Stearns Wharf; tourist central. But during this time of the morning, it was so peaceful.

Looking around; it's obvious why visitors love the wharf; built in 1872, it was at that time the longest wharf south of San Francisco and North of San Pedro. And the views are lovely.

And on this bright and sunny day, sans the crowds, we got a chance to notice things…..

As we were leaving a vintage car club drove up to the wharf and parked. I loved the license plate on this one……

A lovely visit on a relaxed morning……

We decided to drive around a bit and visited the Santa Barbara Public Market, Gelsons, and Whole Foods. Not very inspiring, but it was a nice way to kill time.

When lunch came around, we parked at where we were staying and decided to walk down to a place on my list, Barbareño. Which was a rather hot and sweaty one mile walk down De La Vina Street. The place only served lunch in the outdoor area, with a limited menu.

Our Server, who was obviously a college student was very friendly, efficient, and really knew the menu. I'm not sure if it's because of the clientele, but the staff at restaurants in SB, really knew their stuff.

I ordered a Tri-Tip sandwich, Brussel sprouts, and "Animal Potatoes" for the Missus and I. I happened to mention that we'd be sharing the sandwich. And when it arrived, we were pleasantly surprised to see that they had split it for us!

IMG_6702 IMG_6704This was a perfectly serviceable tri-tip, moist and decently tender, good smokiness, with a pico de gallo type relish and good amount of cilantro. A nice yeasty roll and this was quite good. Don't get me wrong, this ain't Firestone Grill, but it was enough.

It came with a arugula salad.

The Brussel sprouts looked good, but were on the mushy side and a bit too sweet for us. The Missus really enjoyed the Animal Potatoes, the cheddar cheese added a nice saltiness, the caramelized onions a decent sweetness, and the Thousand Island Dressing……not the Missus's favorite, but I enjoyed the creamy-richness it added. The potatoes were nicely crisp on the exterior; though a bit hard in texture.

I don't think Barbareño is serving lunch anymore….too bad, because this was rather nice.

Clearing Out the Memory Card – Tiger! Tiger!

I love being wrong……I do. I visit every place, whether it's new or on our rotation hoping for a great meal. And for places we love….well, sometimes, it ain't so great. At the beginning of 2018, we visited Tiger! Tiger! a couple of times and were quite disappointed. I believe I mentioned that in a post somewhere….of course, a week after I wrote that, the Missus decided we should pay them another visit….and, of course we enjoyed ourselves.

So here's a round-up of recent dishes at Tiger! Tiger! And….I'll preface things by saying that having something like Pliny the Younger….does help things!

Even at $15……you should try this once…..great balance…..amazing tongue feel……and 10 ABV….well, don't have too many!

The Missus has been enjoying the really spicy….and I do mean legit spicy Mushroom Sandwich……

The Missus has enjoyed the Kim Chi Brussel Sprouts….though it's not always perfect for Her tastes.

Man, finally a wonderful Sunday here in San Diego. Still a bit humid, but I really can't complain. The Missus has the weekend off so we did brunch….which made me remember I had a bunch of photos "collecting dust". So without further ado; is "COMC – Brunch Edition". Loved the beans in this; the flavor of epazote came through nicely. Nice vegetarian option.

Red Card Cafe Revisited

A few months back; Red Card Café brought on a new chef. Looking at the Chef's Bio we were intrigued at some of the places mentioned. We had enjoyed our New Year dinner at Red Card and was already happy to see things were looking up in our neighborhood. So with this news we decided it was time to head back to Red Card. Instead of making just one or two visits; we've been back almost ten times as we found the menu interesting, at times a bit strange, but with some really good dishes.

Red Card Rev 01 Red Card Rev 02The current menu; which was fully implemented in August is much more grown up. It also seems more seasonally focused.

Over the last five or six years, we've often found that appetizers and small plates are the way to go for us. Kitchens will often take a bit more chances and stretch out a bit. Our strategy at Red Card was no different.

So, what are our favorites?

The Missus's numero uno, to the point that She's had it probably four times is the Braised Spanish Octopus ($13).

The octopus has always been perfectly fork tender, though on one occasion it was too salty. The Missus is a big fan of puy lentils and these have always been cooked to a pleasing texture, holding their shape well, with a slight green-peppery flavor. The Romesco sauce is nicely balanced; not too much garlic, but very nice. The only thing we think is just okay are the toasts which have been really hard on several visits.

We enjoy the salads….pick one; we've enjoyed them all, though I think the Missus's favorite is the Arugula & Stone Fruit ($9).

Perfectly dressed; the white balsamic dressing had that hint of sweetness, the crisp arugula and the frisee balanced the scales with peppery bitterness. I'm not a big fan of fruit in my salad; but I thought the nectarines really added a bit of tart-sweetness to the salad. I'm also glad that feta was used with some restraint.

I realized that I said I'm not a big fan of fruit in my salad; but my favorite is the Prosciutto and Fig ($10).

Great salty and complex fruity-sweetness, along with the wonderful nuttiness of the pistachios made this very enjoyable. The cheddar wasn't too sharp and added a little milky-smokiness to the salad.

We also enjoyed the Beet Salad ($10).

Sweet beets, tart-sour-anise-crisp pickled fennel; frisee nicely dressed.

I mentioned how much we enjoy the salads here and was told the produce comes from Chino Farm.

An item on the menu that caught my attention was the Watermelon Poke ($10). I've seen it floating around on websites; a trendy take for vegetarians on the poke bowl. Frankly, I didn't expect much, but this was better than I thought it would be.

Kinda looks like fish, huh? The cubes of watermelon had been transformed and the flavor of sesame oil and a touch of sourness (ponzu sauce) had been infused into the watermelon. Seems like perhaps sous vide at work? The watermelon ends up being only slightly sweet with nice savory tones. The Missus didn't care much for this…….the texture and the flavor kind of threw her off. Hence, you know why there's not too much molecular gastronomy going on in the mmm-yoso household.

The Duck Liver Mousse ($8), seemed perfect for us.

Red Card Rev 07 Red Card Rev 08There is however, the concept of "too much of a good thing". The mousse was very rich with a pronounced sweet-livery flavor.

A bite or two would have been perfect. A jar of it was way too much and it became a bit of a chore trying to finish it.

Also having only four crostini for a jar of this size was too little….you'd be basically having to eat one-fourth of a jar of the mousse on every slice of toast.

Fine at first……way too much at the end….even when trying to use the cornichons and cherry jam (the mousse was already sweet and the jam took it too far) to cut the richness.

The Umami Wings ($9) were a bit interesting.

Red Card Rev 13 Red Card Rev 14Actually "strange" might be more apt since the "secret" seasoning really tasted like some versions of Guai Wei Can Dou (guai wei = "strange flavored") I've had.

The powder seemed to detract from the crispness of the wings. These were also a bit too salty.

As you can tell, these are smaller wings, which I don't mind since the skin to meat ratio is increased.

On one of my solo visits I ordered the Cauliflower Gratin ($10).

Red Card Rev 11 Red Card Rev 12There was too much cheese for my liking in this and the overall dish came across as too salty. In fact, the overall milky saltiness reminded me of the Mousse tiede d'epoisse we had at Aupres du Clocher in Pommard.  Again, too much of a good thing. As luck would have it, I also ordered the Beef Tallow Fries ($6). Which when dipped or mixed into the gratin tasted really good. How ironic; my dish ended up being sort of a potato gratin in the end. This was so rich that I finished only about a third of the dish.

There's only been one item on the menu I totally didn't care for. The Spam Mususbi Arancini ($9). Now, coming from the islands, I was kind of interested to see how this would turn out.

Red Card Rev 15 Red Card Rev 16aFirst off, as you can tell, these were fried too "hard". To me arancini should be crisp with a certain lightness to it. The breading was hard as rock. Second, I couldn't taste the Spam….I really didn't like the salty-teriyaki flavor. The sriracha mayo just made things worse as it covered up all the other flavors…….pass.

Still, once we've found the items we like at Red Card, it's been smooth sailing.

Now, I'm wondering if they're going to have New Year's dinner this year? I hope so…..

Back to Luce Bar & Kitchen

I know quite a few folks who love Luce. They're regulars and keep telling me that the place has really stepped up their game over the last couple of years. I hadn't been to Luce in ages, so while I haven't been wowed by my previous visits, heck the place is in my neighborhood…..

Looking at the dinner menu; well, other than the salads, it didn't inspire me very much.

I ended up getting the Smoked Tri-Tip Sandwich ($14).

Luce Rev 04 Luce Rev 05This was not bad; not a particularly large portion of rather under-smoked tri-tip. Of course, I don't expect to be as good as my favorites, nor even like what I make at home. This was ok, a bit tougher than I enjoy. The roll was decent; though a bit dry. The caramelized onions was a nice touch as it added a much needed sweetness to the sandwich, I also enjoyed the horseradish crème fraiche, the sweet-pungency was perfect. I didn't care much for the provolone, which was too mild to add anything to the dish and would have preferred more tomatoes. The avocado added another layer of creaminess which was nice.

I actually enjoyed the fries most of all. Not too much truffle oil, places just kill you with that stuff these days, a nice amount of garlic…..fried to a nice crispness.

And then I noticed the chalkboards…..my goodness; sweetbreads? It seems that there are weekly specials served after 5 pm.

So I met my friend "Al" for dinner. She lives close by. Sadly, they erased the sweetbreads from the menu as we arrived. Still, there were several items to choose from.

Off the dinner menu we selected the Roasted Beet Salad.

The beets were very nice; though there wasn't much of it. The greens crisp and fresh, but a bit over-dressed for my taste. For some reason, both Al and I thought the goat cheese was overkill; there was just too much of it here.

The best dish of the night was the Tempura Shishito Peppers. Nice laquer batter; crisp and crunchy.

The cotija cheese was a surprisingly nice companion to the peppers and what seemed to be a wasabi based sauce. A very nice dish. I'd have this again.

We finished with the Octopus, which was a bit of a let down.

The seaweed salad really clashed with the grapefruit, it was a real odd combination. The octopus, a bit chewier than I prefer was lost in this dish.

Overall not bad, the food was better than on my previous visits. I'll be interested to see what else the kitchen comes up with beyond the regular pub grub. I will be back; the crew here is really friendly. And with the trolley coming in, it seems like places are trying to up their game a bit as the gentrification of this part of Bay Park continues.

Soda & Swine (Liberty Station)

So, the Missus really wanted to try someplace different and She's been missing poutine since leaving Montreal/QC and as a plus, Soda & Swine specializes in meatballs, another favorite of the Missus. I'd been to Soda & Swine before; the Adam's Avenue location and thought it was pretty good. We didn't want to deal with the parking hassle, so we headed on down to Liberty Station.

So now it's the second location of Soda & Swine, part of the Consortium Holdings kingdom.

I really liked the set-up; you can either order at the register right when ordering, or head to the bar for typical bar service. The area is nice a breezy, even on an especially warm day and we've always had good service here.

Soda and Swine 02  Soda and Swine 03I started with a beer, but the Missus wanted a cocktail and ordered the "Oaxacan Old Fashioned". She loved the lingering smokey finish to this spin on the Old Fashioned.

I guess She's got a new favorite.

It was also Happy Hour and since we weren't too hungry, we decided to order the two dishes on the Happy Hour menu.

We ordered the Happy Hour specials; starting with the "Dirty Fries" ($5 – Half Order). S&S goes for a rustic approach to serving….it's either in little cast iron pans or metals trays here.

Basically nice and crisp fries, mushroom gravy, topped with a meatball of your choice (smoked pork), lardons, shaved parmesan, and some diced jalapeno peppers. Soda and Swine 07

I gotta say, this wasn't bad at all, the fries were decent, the gravy added some creaminess, not to the level of, say a good poutine, but it wasn't bad. The meatball….well, the Missus does like Her meatballs, was smokey and tender, the shaved parmesan was barely discernable, the pork belly lardon….bacon if you will added a nice textural contrast to things, with the peppers adding a tiny bit of heat. We felt the aioli's weren't really necessary as they tended to detract from the fried loveliness of the dish. Not quite poutine, but it'll do for now.

The Fried Chickpeas ($1) were a nice distraction, slightly crunchy at first bite, then mildly creamy. A decent bar snack.

We weren't very hungry, so this was enough for us on this visit.

Since then we've returned a couple of times and have tried some items on the menu. Here's how they rank.

It's still the Dirty Fries that the Missus enjoys most. We now just get a full order ($9.49) which is enough for an entire meal for the both of us with leftovers. The best combination of meatballs is chorizo and smoked pork.

On occasion we've had a batch that was too salty. And while it won't make the Missus forget about poutine and I'm sure She'll tire of these, we're riding out the craving.

Tied for next is the Skillet of Three Meatballs ($8.29) tied with the Scotch Egg ($4.13).

Soda and Swine 09 Soda and Swine 10Feet to the fire; I think the Missus prefers the Scotch Egg….because if there's anything the Missus enjoys more than meatballs, it's a soft boiled egg. The yolks on these at nice and soft, perhaps a tad past where the Missus likes them, but it's wrapped in a layer of chorizo before the nicely seasoned breadcrumbs.

The first time had the meatballs we had sauce and cheese on it which was just too much stuff and took away from the flavor of the meatballs. I'd say, if you're just going with the beef version, which is on the dry and tough side have at it. On our next visit, we decided to have the sauce on the side and stuck with marinara. To me, it's still the smoked pork meatball that's the best; relatively moist, not too salty, mild smoked flavor.

We didn't enjoy the two vegetable dishes we've tried here.

The Broccolini ($4.19) was overcooked and under seasoned, very bland as a whole. I tasted little or no garlic and for some reason it seems the parmesan they use here is very bland.

The Brussel Sprouts ($4.29) were a bit too charred and hard, while the interiors were mushy.

They really didn't use enough fish sauce to provide enough salty-savory tones for us….the best part were the lardons of pork belly.

So, I guess until the Missus needs a break from the fries here, we'll stick with those. Soda and Swine 15

Returning to Tiger! Tiger!

I sure felt the heat the last couple of days. Must be getting wimpy in my old age.

Just a short post for today…..the humidity almost makes me want to head back to the office…..almost.

A few days back we just decided to get the heck out of the house and head to Tiger! Tiger!. We hadn't been back since January.

As usual the Charcuterie Plate was just what we wanted.

Though the cucumber – avocado salad was less than stellar. The cucumbers were old and the skin tough….perhaps they should have been peeled. The avocado was brown; too bad, because that dill based dressing was nice.

Still, it was a nice break.

And yes, I still haven't really ordered anything off the regular menu.

It's been tough heading back to Tiger! Tiger! You see the last time we were there at the end of January, was the night we lost Sammy.

It was really strange; the Missus had a rare night off; She's been working like crazy like I have this year. Sammy, who had done deaf two years ago and usually wouldn't hear us when we got home anymore, met us as we returned at the door. I'd recently gotten him some steps so he could hang out on his favorite place on the sofa and we got a kick watching him use it. But you could tell; he was getting up there. He still ate well and his enthusiasm for life was unabated.

The Missus's co-worker knitted this silly looking cap for Sammy and this is our last photo of him on that day….I guess he wasn't amused.

He seemed extra energetic when we got home, running around, bugging me to play with him and his favorite toy of the hour. He just kept going and going….we just cracked up.

I went into the room we use as an office and Sammy took his usual position right behind my chair. I heard a sighing sound, Sammy looked at me, gasped, and he was gone. We grabbed him, ran out of the house and over to the Pet Hospital, but it was for naught.

In way, I think Sammy planned it out…..his Mommy was home, he'd had a great and fun evening, enjoyed his dinner, and got to say goodbye.

Yes it's "Them Bones" again. I actually got busy too quickly and forgot to take a photo until I'd scraped all the meat off the beef ribs.

Trade Winds Tavern Soft Opening, Dudley’s Deli Becoming Tahini Street Food, the Sign for Ramen Ultra is up, Continuing my “Hut Streak”, and Wow, is it Closed?

A bit overdue with these odds and ends.

Trade Winds Tavern Soft Opening:

And was kind of curious when I read the Application for Ownership Change announcing the new business, then the Help Wanted sign mentioning a Asian themed Gastropub. So, does Common Theory have some serious competition? Stay tuned. Meanwhile, enjoy the soft opening prices until the end of February.

Almost didn't notice this one.

Sadly, Dudley's in Kearny Mesa just never gained any traction. Now it's becoming something named Tahini Street Food.

Continuing my "Hut Streak":

So, "Sandy" left a comment on my Noodle Hut post, after I mentioned doing "Two Huts in Three Days". She asked me: What's next – Pizza Hut? Apparently, Cathy read that comment and thought it was a hoot. So, I thought, "ok, why not"? The only problem was…..I don't recall the last time I actually saw a Pizza Hut and let Cathy know. She believes that I just block those places out. So, after doing a Google search, I found a Pizza Hut nearby….doesn't seem to have too many of them left, in Clairemont Town Square. I headed on over……by the time I reached the parking lot, I already had….hmmmm……how to describe it, "buyer's pre-morse"? And upon finding that it looked like a take-out only shop, I decided to turn around and head back to the car.

Yes…you could say that I….."chickened – Hut".

Still, wanting to keep my "hut-streak" going for one more day, I found a place that fulfilled the criteria.

It must have been fate, because I found a parking space in the worst lot on Convoy.

And had some Wings – "Naked"….sauce on the side. Nicely fried.

Other than the brown paper blocking things out….the light are still on. Still, if Great Wow did close like this; it would probably fit the rather interesting pattern of how they opened.
