A morning of driving through Business Parks in Poway and The Mister and I stumbled upon this area of multiple restaurants, anchored by a  bank and a Carl's, Jr., where everyone who works nearby must know about.  It was all new to us. 

IMG_0898 Choices of pizza, Asian fusion, poke, a taco shop and Greek/Mediterranean (as well as a massage parlor)…what a unique mall area with plenty of parking.
IMG_0900 We decided on Viktor's after checking out menus on the windows of all the businesses.
IMG_1911IMG_1909  Walk up, order and pay.  Grab your beverages. Your name is called out when everything is ready.
IMG_0906 For this initial visit, we chose to share an Ultimate Salad ($14.95).  A full serving of Gyros and a full serving of Victor's chicken on top of a Greek Salad.  Wow!  Plenty of food to share. A standard Greek salad-Romaine, bell peppers, onion, tomato, Feta and Greek olives, topped with a house made VK dressing.  The marinated chicken was moist and grilled with a nice char.  The beef and lamb gyros was shaved from the vertical rotisserie spit and very good. 

IMG_0907 I also ordered this "Feta Melt" from the starter menu ($6.25) and wow-this was great.  Feta, red onion,  bell peppers, tomatoes on a toasted pita. 

IMG_0909 A great bite of flavors and texture.  Even though served folded, as above, eating the pita 'open faced' seemed proper.

We'll return to try more of the menu here as well as some of the other restaurants.

The Money Pit (San Marcos)

Hey!  Here you are, reading mmm-yoso!!!, a blog about food.  Typepad must be up and working!  In any case, Cathy is writing today while Kirk is avoiding computers as much as He can. 

I had heard of The Money Pit, but hadn't been this far North in a while.  Then one day, The Mister and I were in the area.   The Money Pit has Yelp reviews from more than 14 years ago, so it has been around a while and made it through Covid.

This building had been a bank in its original construction and the exterior architecture, Drive Through lane as well as the interior footprint are essentially the same.

IMG_1758 "The Mess" ($9.10) Eggs, cheese, hash browns, bell pepper, onion, ham, bacon, sausage and toast. Everything in every bite. A lot of food, a lot of flavor, a lot of texture.  Should be enough for anyone.

IMG_1760 IMG_1764 Chili Cheese omelette ($8.90) Three eggs filled with house made chili (no beans) and topped with a slice of American cheese.  A slab of crispy hash browns and toast.  Again a lot of food.  A bowl of chili will be a nice meal when the weather cools down. 

We came back for lunch.  Of course
IMG_1396IMG_1396 We decided to share a side and since it was our first time, a Combo Plate ($6) was ordered.  Fries (not too many; a nice surprise), onion rings (whole onion, not diced), zucchini fingers and mushrooms.  This large platter was served with two large cups of house made Ranch (you can order more for 50¢). Excellent, fresh, proper fry (even the potatoes were nice and crisp) and leftovers.
IMG_1396 A "3 x 3" burger ($6.60) was one order.  Three charred beefy patties, three slices of cheese, lettuce, tomato, pickle and onion on a toasted bun.   Excellent, fresh and, of course, large.
IMG_1396 The Chicken Breast Sandwich ($7.75) was a great choice.  Served on a lightly toasted Squaw Roll, the grilled chicken breast has a slight char and is moist and flavorful. Lettuce and tomato is all that was needed to compliment this sandwich.

Definitely worth return visits.

Izakaya Sakura (after all these years)

mmm-yoso!!! is the name of this food blog.  Cathy is writing today while Kirk is enjoying some time off with His Missus. 

Following Kirk's post in June, I realized The Mister and I had not been regularly going to Sakura for years (darn Covid!) and we've made an effort to enjoy some summertime lunches here. 
IMG_8955 Having signage over the building still seems so odd, even though it was put up in 2015; still used to no signage and needing to explain the location on the blog since 2005.
IMG_9690 Step inside, the sign in sheet is at the door, sushi bar is to your right.  There is outdoor seating.

IMG_3862 IMG_3865 IMG_3866 IMG_8946 The paper menu is in English and Japanese.  If you are early enough (and there are still some of the limited number of bento lunch specials available), you'll be given the daily Special Bento Box menu.  You can also read the menus online. 

IMG_8948IMG_8952 This Bento Special ($15) included Pot au feu, steamed chicken, fish miso, deep fried Spanish mackerel, deep fried meatloaf, spaghetti and rolled omelet  (in addition to miso soup and salad).  Pot au feu is steamed beef with vegetables; tender, rich flavored.  The steamed chicken was also nicely flavored (no condiments/soy sauce is needed for any of this meal); every bite was well balanced.

IMG_8950 Sara Udon ($18) is a crispy noodle based dish.  Stir fried seafood (shrimp, fish, scallops) and vegetables with a smooth sauce surrounded by crisp, fried udon.  Textures, flavors and comfort-food. 

IMG_9662 IMG_9668 Homemade gyoza ($7.50) are filled with a juicy pork mix,.  The gyoza skins are thin with a light fry.

IMG_9680 Chicken Katsu Bowl ($16).  Served as a 'Set" (as are all the main dishes), the Katsu chicken on top of rice is light crisp-fried and juicy. 
IMG_9680 Ebi Kakiage Udon ($14)- Shrimp with shredded vegetable.  This tempura-type dish has the shrimp (ebi) coated with bits of seafood and vegetable fried into a sort of fritter.  Pieces can be dipped in the udon, but the crispiness is what was craved this day.

71036846541__10FCFD4A-9F15-496B-BC1B-F8681B72D325 Arriving like this- with hidden fish and a luxurious topping of mixed vegetables and  many types of mushroom in an excellent (not too salty) dashi based broth.  Each component of this tray was filled with flavor.  The fried grouper did manage to stay crisp for a good part of the meal.

IMG_0382 One hot day, I ordered my favorite, Tempura Zaru Soba ($14).  Chilled soba noodles with a tasty dipping sauce and tempura shrimp on the side.  Soba does not affect my blood sugar levels, making this dish even more satisfying.

Consistently great food.

Another Road Test of mechanics and maneuverability for some floats which will be participating in the 2024 Tournament of Roses Rose Parade was held on the last Saturday of August at Phoenix Decorating Company in Irwindale.  We arrived here about 7 a.m.IMG_1611 The Entry for Rotary International, "Clean Water, The Music of Life" was being tested with weight (people) onboard.  You can see a rectangular slot at the front end of the 'keyboard'-that is where the 'Spotter' for the float will be watching for traffic and hazards during the parade.  He or she will be communicating with the driver, who only looks down and follows the 'Rose Colored Line' painted on the street.
IMG_1598 The entry by the City of Alhambra, "Celebrating the Year of the Dragon"was tested in its full open position. 
IMG_1605IMG_1608 But every float has a maximum height and width it must be able to collapse down to so it can proceed along the Parade Route.  The doorway of the decorating barn is that maximum size.  

IMG_1612 "Chimes of Liberty Protecting Our Future"  is the 2024 entry by the Fraternal Order of Elks, a Service Organization.
IMG_1616IMG_1616IMG_1616IMG_1616 This detailed float will certainly be an eye catcher! You might notice the hands are missing from the Fife and Drum Corps- the faces as well as the hand flesh tones are being decorated with various spice blends/mixes by professionals (not us volunteers).
IMG_1585 Lutheran Hour Ministries entry, "Make A Joyful Noise Unto The Lord" passed its third mechanics and maneuverability test and is ready to be decorated beginning on December 2.  You can see the rectangular slot for the 'Spotter' in this photo.

Following taking photos, The Mister and I headed South on Irwindale Avenue, (passing Portos) and He started looking for Dim Sum via his phone.  All That 'N Dim Sum opened at 8 a.m.!  Siri directed us.  It wasn't very far past the multiple places cc and I visited last year following the 2023 Rose Parade Road Test #2.

IMG_1652IMG_1668 Pretty much a standard first time order for us: Har Gow ($3.99), Shumai ($3.99), Crescent dumplings ($3.59) and egg tarts ($3.59) were brought out first.  Fresh and warm, great flavors.IMG_1661IMG_1670 The soup dumplings ($7.99) took a little longer and were steaming hot.  (I took the photo before asking for a spoon, but there was no leakage) quite a bit of soup and a thin dumpling skin). Tasty.

IMG_1650 There were utensils in the drawer under the tabletop-but no spoons. IMG_1648 Tea was $1 each (so, one green and one oolong) and you could get more hot (as well as chilled) water at the counter.

Sandos from Grocers- Nijiya, Marukai, Mitsuwa

Todays mmm-yoso!!! post is being written by Cathy.  Kirk is enjoying air conditioned comfort and is too busy to write.

As I was reading Kirk's post about Kumo Japanese Sandos, in early May, I realized that The Mister and I have also been grabbing Japanese supermarket sandwiches for decades but never posting on  this ever present inexpensive quick and tasty meal.  So, here's a small compendium. 

IMG_1065 Nijiya Japanese Market is a favorite stop because of the organic Produce section as well as the prepared foods area. I wrote about some 'grab and go' meals in 2010 and 2013.  We were here a lot during Covid (yes, "Covid" defines a period of time), when they removed the outdoor tables so we had to eat in the car or at home.  A few prepared items, along the back wall, have changed but overall the quality remains. IMG_1068 There is a two sided refrigerated area near where you stand in line for the cash registers.  One section has various sandwich choices.
IMG_0605 This is a "Mix Sandwich" ($5.49) on white or wheat.  Four different fillings- Tuna Salad, Egg Salad, Ham with butter and a Lettuce and Tomato with cheese and mayonnaise.  Each piece of sandwich in this mix is 1/3 of a crustless bread sandwich made with three bread slices and two layers of filling.  

IMG_0606 The "Fruits Sandwich" varies daily.  This one had melon and pear and orange along with whipped cream in between slices of a quality white bread. 

IMG_0610Picked up some sushi while I was there and we had a nice meal.

IMG_4628 There is a Chicken Cutlet sandwich ($5.99)-breaded deep fried chicken with a house made tonkatsu sauce (A Pork Cutlet sando is $6.99).  On this day the Fruits Sandwich was simply strawberries with whipped cream. 
IMG_1069 Placed between the three Chicken sando sections were three smaller lettuce/tomato/cucumber/mayonnaise sandwiches.  A nice, balanced meal.

IMG_1071 Marukai has two 'grab and go' island refrigerators as well as closed door freezers and a small hot deli counter.  There is just so much inside this small yet packed market.

IMG_0104 The egg salad sando ($4.99) as well as the katsu pork sando ($4.99) are exceptionally good here.  You can see I also purchased the potato salad and some katsu chicken (which is really tasty from here).  {Yes, we use Christmas plates all year.}

IMG_1082 Located between Marukai and Nijiya is Mitsuwa, which has three small restaurants in the 'Food Court" area as you enter the store and a sushi area as well as plenty more 'Grab and Go' choices along the right wall with two open refrigerated sections across the aisle.

IMG_0812 The Mix Sandwich here ($7.99) consists of four sandwiches, each 1/3 of a whole sandwich. Egg Salad, Tuna Salad, Ham with lettuce and a Japanese Potato salad sando.  Each sandwich is fresh and flavorful and fancy.  Again, katsu chicken was purchased as a 'side'. IMG_0818

JCK Asia Kitchen & Bar (Chula Vista)

The Mister and I were in the Bonita/Chula Vista area one day and started looking for a light lunch.  Soon, we found ourselves at this mall on the South East corner of  East H Street at Proctor Valley.  We stopped.  IMG_4465

IMG_0542IMG_0542 Neat and clean interior seating.  There is also outside seating and a small menu, which is nice.  Many items can be ordered vegetarian.  Our waiter said that most everything here is made from scratch.

IMG_0549 We both wanted the cucumber salad ($6) on this rather warm day.  It was *excellent*- cool, refreshing, with just enough salt and sesame oil to compliment the smashed cucumbers.
IMG_0549 The Ma Po Tofu with pork and rice ($12.50) (you can also order vegetarian for $2 less) was a shareable portion.  The sauce had the brightness of  Sichuan peppercorns and the silky tofu was plentiful while the bits of pork complimented the flavors and added texture.  A very balanced dish. 
IMG_0549 Under "Signature" dishes on the menu were Chilli Wontons (12) ($10.50).  We had to try these.  Not much chili on top, but there is a great house made chili crisp on the table which enhanced the porky goodness of these large, two-bite wontons in a stretchy, thin wrap.  The broth at the bottom of the bowl was wonderful with a rich porkiness and subtle chili heat.

A great restaurant in an unexpected (to us) location.  We hope to be in the neighborhood again soon to try out more of the menu.

2024 Rose Parade Float Road Test #2 and breakfast at Ocean Bo (El Monte) plus

This past Saturday had us waking at 4, leaving at 5 and getting to Irwindale at 7; the start of what we thought would be an efficient morning. 

2024 Rose Parade Float Road Test #1 

A few floats were being tested for mechanics and maneuverability.IMG_0953 The Oddfellows and Rebekahs float, "All You Need is Love", passed with flying colors!  I can't wait to see which natural materials are used to decorate the unicorns.IMG_0965 The Kiwanis 2024 float, "Serving in Harmony" passed its third road test, with people (weight) on board and will be ready too decorate with 'dry' materials and glue on the first Saturday in December.  You can volunteer to decorate by signing up HERE

IMG_0965 The Lions Clubs International float, "Changing the World Through Music" has a great rendering of the Parade theme (Celebrating A World of Music; The Universal Language) and float title.

 The Royal Court float was also tested; seven members will be seated here as part of their year long reign of community service.IMG_0975 Stored inside the float barn, the Elks Clubs float with headless and handless Fife and Drum Corps is painted in (usually human 'skin' decorating, done with various spices, is separately worked on and I suspect that is why the heads and hands are not attached).

 The Rotary International entry, "Clean Water, the Music of Life" with the ducks and umbrellas looks to be a winner.  It's cute and conveys the message of the Parade and of Rotary.

Being efficient, we were on the road South and got to Portos before 8 a.m..

 Plenty of parking, no lines, a quick pick up of the seasonal peach tart, a blueberry croissant, cranberry orange scone, cheese roll, walnut raisin bread and a Cuban quesadilla (pretty much another form of cheesecake).

 We started on the 10 West, toward El Monte, took an exit and I made a quick stop upon seeing this signage.

 We ordered #1, #3 and #7 (Shrimp Har Gow, Shrimp Shiu Mai and bean curd wrapped meat) ($18 total) and put the bag in the car.  It would be a late lunch.

Steamed Fun Gor, Ham Sui Gok, Shrimp and Chive dumpling, Seafood Gow and baked egg tart (each $4.59).  Hot tea was $1.80 each and the pot was constantly kept refilled.

H Brothers (Escondido)

Recently, The Mister and I were in downtown Escondido to run some errands.  We parked at one of the free parking lots just behind buildings on East Grand (just off of East 2nd Avenue) and started walking.  We knew there would be someplace to eat.

IMG_0748 The red brick building with the black awning, next to LLL Reptile on East Grand between North Kalmia and North Juniper.  It's pretty easy to spot.   
IMG_0748 There is plenty of indoor seating as well as quite a few outdoor tables.

IMG_0711 Step inside and the menu is on the wall.  There are paper menus also.  Order, pay and your food will be brought to your table.IMG_0745
IMG_0727 The first item that caught our eyes, top left-Original Poutine ($8.99).  Fresh cut fries, brown gravy, cheese curds.  We had to.  The fries were skin on, definitely made here.  Not too crisp, but hot and thoroughly cooked, covered with the not-salty brown gravy and cheese curds, which melted in the heat of the fries.  The cheese was plentiful and stretchy and a really great part of each bite.  There were leftovers which reheated quite well in the fry pan at home.  
IMG_0727 Pretty much the center of the menu board, the Cuban Torta ($16.99) wa our agreed choice.  A toasted Torta roll slathered with mayonnaise, filled with adobada, pulled pork, ham, provolone, a fried egg, pineapple, and pickled jalapeño.`
IMG_0729IMG_0729 You can see it all here.  Each meat (plenty of meat in this sandwich) was fresh and offered a discernible variety of flavors.  Then there were textures-the egg was runny, adding a richness and the sweet slice of lightly crisp pineapple was very complimentary to all of the porky goodness.  Even the light crunch, slight saltiness and light heat of the pickled jalapeño helped bring it all together with each bite.  We each had leftovers of our respective halves.
IMG_0735  IMG_4533 Looking over to the bottom right of the menu-Beignets ($7.99).  Oh yes, this would be a dessert day.  We were asked if we wanted the deep fried dough to come out with our meal or would we like to wait, since everything is made to order here.  We said we were not in a hurry and later were asked if they should start on the dessert.  

The hot fried dough pockets arrived covered in powdered sugar and accompanied by three sauces: chocolate, blueberry and raspberry.   The beignet alone had great flavor, a crunchy exterior, fluffy interior and I thought needed no additions…then I dipped a corner.  The sauces were wonderful!  Fried dough became a spectacular dessert and this was a really nice treat.  There were no leftovers to take home.

Everything is made here, daily.  Quality North American comfort food.  We will return.

Volare (Loma Portal) (again)

mmm-yoso!!! is usually written by Kirk, who is presently enjoying a summer weekend while Cathy writes the post today. 

I wrote about Volare in 2014 and The Mister and I have returned to this family owned and operated restaurant (since 1978) many times since, here's an update.

70898000034__4B09DF96-55FA-4232-9086-2F79A3876602 IMG_9863 to the 1/2 eggplant parmesan sandwich ($9 on the board at the door specials).  This is a favorite order, served on a wonderful toasted Italian bread-the tomato sauce, crisp fried, breaded eggplant and melted cheese is a blend of comforting flavors and a texture filled meal.

IMG_9856IMG_9870 The Mister ordered the baked (cheese or meat) ravioli from the menu at the door ($9).  The serving comes with the bread, as well as a choice of meat or meatless sauce as well as the optional mushroom topping (of course He wanted that!).   He also ordered a side salad ($2); quite large and we shared it.  Great, tasty ricotta filled ravioli, meat sauce, fresh mushrooms.  Just perfect.

IMG_9860IMG_9866 The menu at the door also offered an individual size white pizza ($8).  We had to.  Quite large for an appetizer (we thought of it that way) (there were leftovers) and exactly the way I like pizza- simple with a thin, somewhat crisp dough and toppings which conveyed the flavors of the cheeses.

Get Out There! 2023 San Diego County Fair (Part 2; it’s happening now)

The San Diego County Fair has been in full swing since June 7 and will end with a spectacular fireworks display on July 4.  There is still time to "Get Out There" and see what the 2023 theme has in store for you.  Not all of the activities are here, just a few highlights, and, of course some of the unique Fair foods.

IMG_9399 When you park for free at Torrey Pines High School, the transportation might take you around the back side of the Fairgrounds and you can see the rides from a different viewpoint as well as where the workers live during the Fair.  It's been "June Gloom" weather for most of the mornings near the coast.

IMG_9437 IMG_9439 This year, we were going to try to order more unique food choices and mostly succeeded.  Can't get Indian Fry Bread anywhere in the County.  This garlic butter parmesan bread was warm/fresh made and so satisfying.

IMG_0151IMG_0154IMG_0157 On another visit, our quest for 'semi healthy/fried protein' had us ordering this 'Fair Special' from Chicken Charlie's (onion rings, fried zucchini and chicken strips) along with a delightful strawberry lemonade from Stuffie's, just across the way.

IMG_9480 IMG_9491 We found a few new booths (since both the Cream Puffs and the Gingerbread House were gone).  This was a blueberry pie in a cone from In Your Face Pies.  The blueberry filling was warm and this was a good size portion.

IMG_0171IMG_4219 We've seen photos of Hawaiian Honey Cones on various places online and wanted to try.  The cones are produced in Hawaii of organic corn cane (not sugar cane).   The cone tastes like … and has the texture of … think Cheetoes without the cheese with a definite hint of honey.  The ice cream filling is a vanilla Hokkaido style, made with milk from Hokkaido.  Unique and very good; smooth, creamy, a distinct milk flavor with subtle vanilla. This was fun and quality and what we expect of Fair foods.

IMG_0258 We had to get a cherry lime Icee.  The flavors remind us of when we were dating and used to share a cherry-lime rickey at Drakes.
