Cocina 35 (Otay Mesa)

mmm-yoso!!! is a food blog, written by friends.  Kirk and His Missus are on another interesting vacation and Cathy is writing about places to eat in San Diego County.

Long story short, I met a client at 7:45 a.m. on a Saturday and asked her where was a good place for breakfast.  She asked if I liked chilaquiles, I said yes and The Mister and I ended up here, near Brown Airfield. {Take the 905 East until it ends, turn South and take a right at the first signal light (Airway Road) and look for the feather flags}4E7FF5BC-1F74-44B9-A68B-A0544874CA3D3A7D2DA5-8DFB-4DB7-831C-1FC498FEAA50 In the midst of an office park you will find the nicest little place which serves "Old School Mexican" from this modern building near the Border.  It's family owned, been here for seven years with a location downtown on 6th Avenue and another one set to open soon in Liberty Station.

You are given a table number while waiting in line and your beverages after you pay.
EF07E9AF-8FDB-4701-B45E-853FB389C476 We decided on a cafe de olla, which was kept refilled (there is liquid piloncillo on the table if you would like some of that brown sugar flavor in the cinnamon coffee) and a "La Verde" Aqua Fresca (each $4.95).
9DBB9EB0-A89B-4895-8575-2BA4529C5328 Soon, our orders were brought to the table.  The Mister had ordered "El Patron" ($18.75, with carnitas ($4.75)). Crispy cajeta toast (a French toast topped with cajeta (Carmel-like sauce made with goats milk and sugar), two eggs (over easy requested and perfectly made), beans (not refried, but more liquid and meaty flavor) and chilaquiles with rojo sauce and topped with a light very flavorful (not fatty) carnitas.  The chilaquiles were tossed in the salsa, not merely covered, so that each piece of crispy tortilla was coated.  Wow-each item was quite perfect and flavorful and so very good.

Bonita Farmers Market-smoked tri tip

mmm-yoso!!! welcomes you back.  This is another post written by Cathy (because Kirk is elsewhere, with His Missus, preparing/researching some postings).

Recently, a dear client mentioned a memorable sandwich he and his wife had for lunch from this local market.  It's located in the same parking lot as Hans and Harry's in Bonita.2E096A5B-35A7-4977-B74D-193A258B9DCC

B465CB16-BA2C-4F15-99BB-AF769D6E3253 6591D648-1CE3-4181-8B7E-B374D71D690311B61E1C-F5B0-4C94-B5AA-93C98BF715DB The Mister and I stopped in on a Saturday and walked through the store which is undergoing renovations.  Fresh, warm tortillas in an insulated box on the floor, as well as all sorts of beverages, a couple of grocery aisles and a small freezer as well as a meat counter with well-priced selections made this look like a convenient place in the neighborhood.  We ordered and paid at the check out counter.
C2D0AC8E-1EDE-4993-8C92-272767B0C20C There are outdoor tables and on the weekends, the smoker is filled with meats (ready at around 2 p.m., if you want to purchase by the pound).
017FC05E-C472-4E4D-9954-4792BF5C86C5 Soon, our sandwich was brought out. ($11.99, includes a beverage from the cooler).
04374A6F-AF06-4692-BFE5-EDE02C7FD582 It's already cut in half and ordered with 'everything'- mayonnaise, lettuce, tomato,  avocado, onion, pickled jalapeño and pickled carrots.  Sometimes we have to 'rearrange' the tri-tip on our sandwich.
4ADE8A1A-6F24-436B-8FEA-0A3AA46943FA 4A27B654-695E-4B64-B697-F2897F6C195F The meat has an excellent flavor-smoky and meaty (with a thin smoke ring),even with the condiments.  The torta is soft and fresh.  The size is just right for sharing.

A wonderful sandwich and great neighborhood store.

Ramona Country Bakery (Ramona)

mmm-yoso!!! is being written by Cathy today; Kirk and His Missus are on another adventure!

The Mister and I had purchased a loaf of local made bread when we went to Frazier Farms Market in La Mesa and it was very good.  I only remembered it was from Ramona.  Fast-forward to February and some clients were telling me about 'this new bakery in town' and I recognized the deceptively simple name which had been forgotten. FD08B9D8-8AAB-4F22-A54D-656E5E47D83E  The facades of buildings on Main Street in Ramona are quite interesting.  The Miles Mercantile building (on the West side, between Sixth and Seventh) is the home of Ramona Country Bakery, which opened in October, 2022.  The bakery is family owned.   ED523E06-7A65-42CD-8344-017969C643BE EBCA4EB0-7D14-41E2-B9DE-DF0B291BD35F 1F1D0778-0F57-45E4-AB14-B9530EDD1CB7 It's next to the Town Hall and across the street from Turkey Inn, if you need a better visual.

45A58AD2-586F-46EA-BB4D-42ECDA36AFE3 Sttep inside and there's a beautiful area of antique furniture pieces filled with fresh made bread, right next to a small condiment area (for the coffee served here).
68694987-243C-4412-83D2-E7398762915B68694987-243C-4412-83D2-E7398762915B Behind (as well as on) the counter are cloche covered fresh baked treats.
68694987-243C-4412-83D2-E7398762915B9BDFB010-9F3E-474D-922E-748009A38C83 I did order a plain cheese danish ($3) the other day (blueberry cheese was also available) and it was excellent with a light puffy, crisp laminated dough as well as a flavorful creamy cheesecake filling; not too sweet.
45A58AD2-586F-46EA-BB4D-42ECDA36AFE377FCA81A-AB45-428C-9DF9-E591DB86BC67 In February, I chose the Cranberry Walnut Bread ($7).  Soft crust, springy texture and just enough raisin and crisp walnuts to make a slice taste good plain (with or without butter), toasted (with butter) or as the base of a chicken salad sandwich.
2E2A1559-0835-4127-8531-F0444C2664A2

When I walked in the other day, I could smell fresh baked bread- and a loaf of the plain sourdough ($7) was the bread that had just finished baking-and my order.  Crisp crust,  a soft and elastic center crumb texture.  The sourdough bread is made with organic flour and naturally leavened with triple fermenting.  The 'sour' part is just right- not too bold.  It is an excellent bread.

We will return to try another bread (there are quite a few choices) and some more sweets with a cup of coffee.  Soon.

Niban (again)

mmm-yoso!!! is a blog about food.  Cathy is writing today.  Kirk and His Missus are still on vacation.

My most recent post about Niban was in January 2022.  It's time for an update.B66D8297-FD33-42A0-803B-06CC468DA46030C0000F-D1D6-41A7-9ADE-3C4190E5DD18 Walk up and you can read the menu in the front window.  The weekly specials are on the White Board at the bottom; each is $1 less than the menu price.  Walk in, order, pay and find a seat.  Beverages will be brought to your table.

A clear-er picture of the menu.  Prices are about one dollar more per item than last year.
3835750F-0DDB-4F52-87E2-C96E2D21CD8B Bento A ($13.50)-Baked salmon, chicken teriyaki, fried seafood, California roll. Rice, salad and
521DDCA0-3937-408D-9BB9-C9F31FF69856 this really wonderful miso soup are included.  (You can order a bowl for $1.75 if it's not included with your meal; worth it)
A4B64AA8-B4DD-42A2-8350-A88C6220E04D The Ginger Seafood Bento ($11.25).  One salmon piece, one squid piece, two fish
E3A93E53-3091-4D9C-A59A-BCE71567D0D0 and two shrimp.  All cooked well and coated in a really refreshing ginger sauce.  Edamame, chilled noodles, rice and salad are included.
B66D8297-FD33-42A0-803B-06CC468DA460 I have found myself ordering the Vegetable Delight Bento ($11.50) quite often.  Eight pieces of tempura, eight pieces of Garden Roll, edamame, salad and rice.  Of course, everything is properly fried and so very fresh.
BBFF8714-868A-4D94-9DFF-AA881E86540A Hot tea ($1) is a good quality green and the cup is kept refilled.
F015A4A6-94D6-4102-B6E4-5FF9D8D58FA9 The chicken katsu salad ($8.50) can be a meal. The chicken is plump and juicy with a crunchy-light fried coating.
D9FDB796-299C-4A35-A73F-75B5E4B087CB The fried calamari ($7.50) serving is now only four pieces, but each is quite large.  Again, expertly fried crunch batter and the squid is so tender.
6FD47082-A6E2-4B77-83E6-AE65577FF6BB The vegetable tempura  appetizer (or side order, as the case may be) ($7.50) has eight pieces and light, non-greasy fry.
D9FDB796-299C-4A35-A73F-75B5E4B087CB I can't believe we had never tried the mix yakisoba ($10.50) until 2022!  Shrimp, chicken, beef, veggies and quality eggy noodles.  This is served with rice or salad.  A really nice meal.

Always efficient and friendly service, good quality food.  Part of our 'rotation' again.

Lucky Chinese Food (Santee)

Thanks for stopping by to read mmm-yoso!!!, a food blog.  Cathy is writing.

During the height of the pandemic, when "eating out" was kind of scary, The Mister and I had many "to go" orders from Lucky Chinese Food, a Szechuan-Cantonese restaurant located near our home since 1996.  Recently, we have been able to enjoy eating inside the restaurant.
75012E4E-1304-4704-A4D8-73EBBBD88882
E5654B45-5F62-4D57-8498-CE43445968FC Walking the door, the area to the left is where you order To-Go; the original 'footprint' of Lucky.  The restaurant expanded to having Sit-Down in 2014.
442B904A-83B0-4C92-8692-BBE655A860E2 Wonton crisps along with house-made sweet and sour sauce are brought out while you peruse the menu.  A pot of hot tea (choice of jasmine, oolong or green) is $4.50.

C4DFCCE1-9A63-4809-AD77-29F471694F94C4DFCCE1-9A63-4809-AD77-29F471694F94C4DFCCE1-9A63-4809-AD77-29F471694F94C4DFCCE1-9A63-4809-AD77-29F471694F94C4DFCCE1-9A63-4809-AD77-29F471694F94C4DFCCE1-9A63-4809-AD77-29F471694F94C4DFCCE1-9A63-4809-AD77-29F471694F94
186FD950-B4D8-4136-8B75-F98497CE6DC3 The one item we always ordered to-go are these lettuce cups ($10.79).  Minced chicken, water chestnuts, carrot, white and green onion, toasted almonds served with a half head of lettuce, hot mustard and hoisin sauce.  This appetizer can stay in the refrigerator and still tastes good later in the day.  It was our Covid-19 staple.
A633E966-CC02-4522-989E-4AF5938D2C6E778D8B49-20D3-4F1C-846D-E518A487432E The wonton soup ($9.99) has a rich, deep flavored, chicken-pork broth and is filled with chicken, shrimp, vegetables and large pork filled wontons.  As you can see, more fillings than broth- a meal all by itself.
442B904A-83B0-4C92-8692-BBE655A860E2 Spicy pork ($14.79).  The pork is stir-fried with bell pepper, bamboo shoots, zucchini, carrot, celery and onions in a house-made Kung Pao sauce.  The pork is tender, the vegetables are still crisp; this is such a perfect melding of flavors and texture.  (Entrees are served with a choice of steamed rice, brown rice, chow mein or (as above) Singapore noodle).
442B904A-83B0-4C92-8692-BBE655A860E2DBECC0D7-5CB1-4415-8AF8-58AC91E5244B
Seafood Chow Fun ($16.99) was a recent order.  The wide noodles have the smokey 'wok hei' flavor and the shrimp, fish, scallops and bok choy/peas/carrots are each distinctly flavored.  This is a large serving, easily shared and satisfies a craving.
90D389C0-0F2E-4E43-9409-B32BF072311C Sesame chicken ($15.79) is properly fried so the batter remains light and crisp even on the bottom pieces of the serving dish.  The sweet and spicy sauce has a bit of heat (not too much; you can taste the batter as well as the chicken with each bite).

A great spot in East County.

Happy Lunar New Year to everyone, especially all the rabbits (or cats) celebrating their year.

Condolences to all impacted in Monterey Park.

2023 Rose Parade Floatfest and Portos for lunch

mmm-yoso!!! is a food blog.  Sometimes the post explains why we got to the food.  Today is one of those days; Cathy is writing.

D362EEC3-6FBB-4616-A062-FFFF4542398A The 2023 Tournament of Roses with the theme "Turning The Corner" has concluded.  The Rose Parade was held on January 2 (the Parade is never on a Sunday; the first parades in the 1800s had floats that were horses pulling carriages and horses were needed for church on Sunday; the tradition stands).  Following the Parade, the floats line up at the end of the five mile Parade route, end to end, and are displayed after the Parade and the next day.  This year, I drove up with my friend, cc (The Mister had to stay home).  It had rained overnight.

95B5E933-5BA3-49B6-9DB9-272B77E80E55 The Sweepstakes Award, for the most beautiful entry encompassing float design, floral presentation and entertainment, went to the float sponsored by Donate Life, "Lifting Each Other Up".   A spectacular asian street dragon is the centerpiece of the float.  There were 44 memorial floragraphs representing those who had given the gift of life.  Those were removed before the rain, so the families could have a memory.
F562A3DA-FFF3-4022-8910-76E8C11C87A6 You can see the empty circles, where the floragraphs had been, in this photo.

95B5E933-5BA3-49B6-9DB9-272B77E80E55  D16A97EC-2C78-4AE6-883A-42C0BC69164F Trader Joe's entry, "Onward" won the Wrigley Legacy Award for most outstanding display of floral presentation, float design and entertainment. The three piece float was magnificent and whimsical.

E392CB56-5FA7-4574-8F00-A3398DB8208DE392CB56-5FA7-4574-8F00-A3398DB8208DE392CB56-5FA7-4574-8F00-A3398DB8208D Walking along the floats: an alligator, a shark and crested birds were some of the many details not seen during the television broadcast.
AA01B767-F93C-4DC6-A6BA-0B6936BFF1EF The Kiwanis entry, "Catching the Wave of Service" was so beautiful.
C9CC288A-06A8-4F59-AA6D-4609F0EED875 The City of Alhambra entry, "Together We Rise" received the Tournament Volunteer award.
C9CC288A-06A8-4F59-AA6D-4609F0EED875 Elks U.S.A entered "Elks Investing in Our Communities"- a magnificent float.
96B0C613-527E-4065-B2B2-E06CF110D5C196B0C613-527E-4065-B2B2-E06CF110D5C196B0C613-527E-4065-B2B2-E06CF110D5C1 More details- hummingbirds, snails and bees might have gone unnoticed during the quick TV viewing.  Yet so much work was put into the design and decoration of each and every one of the 39 floats in the 2023 Parade.  (I have photos of all the floats if you want any specific pictures).

Now, it is time to start planning for 2024.  Yesterday, the President of the 2024 Parade, Alex Aghajanian, was introduced and he introduced the Theme and logo of the 2024 Rose Parade:

9232264C-9D0F-45EE-868A-D14EC2A3A4C2 "Celebrating a World of Music: The Universal Language".   The float designs are being submitted and construction will begin.  As an aside, each float always has recorded music while it drives down the Parade Route.  This theme will have the floats designed and coordinated with the music.  It should be fun.

If you would like to see the 2023 Rose Parade Float Road Tests, This Post links to all.

32217778-9352-4340-B23E-4EC4F910048E cc was looking forward to going to Portos after our morning of walking.

48910054-B9CD-43A9-9E5B-D369960E086B Traditional celebratory sweets to celebrate Three Kings Day were for sale; however the Rosca de Reyes was already sold out.  We each purchased a Galette des Rois.
6CBE0132-D8E9-438D-B7D8-60382C785277 Puff pastry filled with a layer of almond frangipane cream as well as a touch of guava jam (for a Cuban twist).  The 'baby' could be hidden into a slice by us (if there were more than two of us sharing this tart) and whoever found it could wear the crown.  The Mister and I shared wearing the crown.
26AEEAA5-1653-4F27-AB22-09E8F7D88E63 There were no Roscas, but the seasonal Rosquitas, a sweet bread topped with dried, candied fruits made some nice bites for us this year.

Hong Kong BBQ and Dim Sum (again) (inside Vinh-Hung Supermarket)

Thanks for stopping to read this food blog named mmm-yoso!!!  Kirk (and His Missus) are gallivanting elsewhere while Cathy is writing.

My most recent post about Hong Kong BBQ and Dim Sum was in 2019, before Covid.  Here's an update.

B5331B6F-64F8-4ECB-B031-0EEE9F1D9A3F The former movie theater, now a Vietnamese Market, with the Cantonese restaurant in the former lobby has survived Covid-19.
You can see where the snack bar had been located in the last photo of this post.
38D856F6-1C29-4BAC-8DDE-3E2C91F9B9B2AD33582B-FEA4-400B-9D13-1834ED374097 From the small Dim Sum menu, we ordered XLB-soup dumplings ($6.38).  A nice bite and, as you can see, not quite perfect, but no soup was actually lost because of the creative steaming system.
01DF5B99-453B-4245-8AF6-1AA3F5E821F5 From the 'appetizer' portion of the menu, we ordered the 'Double Delicacy' ($19.95) because we couldn't decide on roasted pork or roasted duck and this was a way to get both (there were leftovers) (both of these meats are really good; tender meat, crisp skin, not too salty.).
E2898B46-2B50-424F-81D4-BD4885287E0F Lately, Chow Fun fulfills the craving I've been having for noodles.  The wide, flat, rice noodles, stir fried to get that smoky 'wok hei' flavor always seems perfect.  (This order was shredded pork with preserved vegetable chow fun ($14.95).  I enjoy the briny 'pickle-ness' of preserved vegetables in any dish and combined with the smoked noodles, each bite was delightful).

Always a nice stop before grocery shopping.

Krab Bros-Boiled Seafood (and another meal at Zion Market Food Court)

mmm-yoso!!! is being written (again) by Cathy, while Kirk is not writing, but is, instead, researching.

I wrote about every eatery in the Zion Food Court in a July 2021 post.  There were changes in July and again in August of 2022.  Here's another one.

4D4DB503-AA06-4403-A05C-9730FB0EE91F In the far corner, the former Sinjeon Food Sys (prior it was CDD Tofu and Grill) has turned into Krab Bros- a boiled seafood restaurant.
EDEA8CA9-9181-41EB-968E-8C51A21D6A24 A simple menu is always appreciated.
FCA67FA5-52B6-438B-AADA-BFF724E5A3F5 The lunch shrimp platter ($14.99) with chosen flavors of original butter, garlic parmesan and Bros Cajun was an excellent choice.  This platter has ten shrimp, a boiled egg, sausage, corn and tiny whole potatoes, all coated in the chosen flavors.  The shrimp were quite large, very plump and had good flavor when I tasted a bit without any flavor coating.  I liked the sausage, egg and corn and especially the small, skin-on potatoes; it was a well balanced meal and quite enough to share.

B2609096-9E0B-49C1-91D0-84F1D5807CD8 I walked over to Boba Bar and ordered a mango slush ($5) for us to share.  We had already shopped inside the Zion Grocery store.

We had chosen some 'snacks', from the heat trays at the back of the market between the meat and fish counters.  (There were leftovers, which would become dinner).

Batter fried squid; always good.  Mushroom pancake; eggy.  Light battered fish filets.  Pickled radishes.  In total it was a bit less than $20- the prepared food is sold by the pound.  When you are paying at the checkout, the cashiers have chopsticks and napkins.

Eating Inside Mitsuwa Marketplace Food Court

Thank you for stopping to read mmm-yoso!!!  Cathy is writing for a few days while Kirk gathers intel for some interesting posts.

I did write about eating at one of the restaurants in Mitsuwa Food Court in 2016, I wrote about a pop up crepe/dessert place in 2013 and again in 2016, when it became a permanent storefront. Kirk wrote about the actual Market in 2006.951E118C-B45E-49AD-9EC9-2BE3B10DA92A In reality, The Mister and I shop here quite often and try to have a bite to eat before walking down the aisles.
F0690CD6-5587-4922-8D4C-EADB56A4FDC4 There is almost always some sort of sale/display in the center entrance area.  The two main restaurants are to your left.
14C37D54-D029-49FA-A30A-29ED78FCE220 Hokkaido Ramen Santuoka is a favorite stop, especially on these chilly, rainy days.
14C37D54-D029-49FA-A30A-29ED78FCE220 The display of the menu -in plastic form-is mesmerizing.  All bowls are available in small, regular and large sizes.
F3708E76-C751-412B-A16C-128758A14682 Shio, soy sauce as well as the miso broths (non-spicy; I like to taste ingredients) are each milky, rich and strong flavored.  The thin, fresh noodles are slightly firm.  Each ingredient is fresh and perfect together.  (This is a small size basic miso ramen ($11) you can order char siu, tonkatsu as well as a variety of sides or sets).

Santuoka open 11-7:30 in the Mitsuwa Food Court
99DA0713-9D3B-48EA-BA00-1470BFA9467C The other restaurant, Musashiya, has an even larger display of Shokuhin Sampuru; an overwhelming menu and choice of items.  Musashiya is owned by Mitsuwa.

Fifty 9 Fifty Local Eatery (Tierrasanta)

Welcome back to mmm-yoso!!!, a food blog.  Kirk and His Missus are currently in the same Time Zone (Pacific) and 'catching up'.  Cathy is writing.

In April, 2019, I saw that this new restaurant had opened on Santo Road at the 52.  Unfortunately things got busy and I forgot to follow through in 2019…then it was 2020 and, you know.  So many businesses in this mall have changed over the years, and Kirk's April 2022 post reminded me  to check it ut again. The Mister and I really like Peruvian food and stopped in a few times, passing Fifty 9 Fifty.  Finally we had a chance to stop in. 2C2E4C86-FABC-4A5C-B432-09C17B26B1D6
45BD1448-43DF-4F4C-92D4-5AB11D7F3DC0 A sort of 'Gastropub' atmosphere with about 20 beers on tap, various seating sections (including covered outdoors), we were given a bottle of chilled water along with chilled glasses with our menu.

B3A4697F-9F76-4D45-BB2B-3E4D8706D457 We decided to try the Cheese Curds ($12). Wisconsin cheese, breaded and fried.  If you bite into a hot one, it does indeed 'squeak'..but otherwise it's just a good bunch of piece of breaded fried cheese, served with a very nice homemade Ranch.
B3A4697F-9F76-4D45-BB2B-3E4D8706D457 The Stuffed Jumbo Portobello mushroom ($15) can be a meal.  Cream cheese, mozzarella and parmesan topped with a panko crust and placed in balsamic syrup…Oh my!

B3A4697F-9F76-4D45-BB2B-3E4D8706D457 We also ordered a Cobb Salad ($14).  This tasted really good, very fresh ingredients (egg, bacon, avocado, tomato, gorgonzola and a nice Blue Cheese dressing.  The presentation…eh.

A nice addition to this little neighborhood which withstood Covid-19.
