Road Trip – Step House, Far View, and Dinner at the Metate Room (Mesa Verde)

After hiking both the Point Lookout and Knife Edge Trails, we decided to head on down to the Wetherill Mesa area which is only open between certain months of the year. Along the way we stopped at the Park Point Overlook. There's a short paved trail to the highest point in Mesa Verde and the view is wonderful here.

This is where we saw the most people on this day.

The Park Point Fire Lookout stands at the highest point.

And it's still in use today. In fact, there's this interesting photo in the window of the lookout.

IMG_1607  IMG_3450 And then we took the long and winding drive down to Wetherill Mesa and easily found parking in the lot.

We decided to do the self-guided tour of the Step House. You basically go down a couple of switchbacks and then take a ladder down to the amazing dwellings! There is a Ranger on duty to answer questions and the area is only open when manned by a Ranger.

This dwelling was populated twice, the first set of inhabitants are called the Modified Basketmakers who settled here around 600 CE. The second set was during the Pueblo III period.

We decided to not do the Long House Tour since we'd be doing Cliff Palace the next day. 

We had lunch in the parking lot. The Missus ate an entire mini-watermelon and we had a couple of terrible tamales from the motel.

We headed then back and then down toward Chapin Mesa. We decided to make a stop at the Far View Sites. This is a rather unique site as it sits at the top of a mesa rather than in an alcove.

Apparently, there were close to 50 villages in this half mile area between 900 and 1300AD.

While the sites, like the Far View House above, which is thought to be the center of the community or the Pipe Shrine House below are quite stunning. I'm guessing folks are expecting those dramatic alcove settlements, which is why we saw no one here, in spite of the easy access.

We then headed further down to Chapin Mesa and made a stop at Spruce Tree Terrace. While both the Chapin Archaeological Museum and Spruce Tree House are were closed the view was…..well, let me say it again, amazing!

We'd stop by again to do a couple of hikes here the following day.

By now, it was getting close to check-in time at our accommodations. We were staying in Mesa Verde at the Far View Lodge, pretty much the only non-camping hotel within Mesa Verde. Of course, after staying at a bunch of these places we knew what to expect; no fridge, definitely no microwave, they wanted to make their money off of you. And while we'd had our own experiences with what we call "National Park cuisine", there were limited options in Mesa Verde. Yet, I'd heard that the offerings at what was described as "Mesa Verde's fine dining restaurant" were pretty good. So I made reservations for this evening.

It's located in the same structure as the hotel check-in and gift shop.

After looking over the menu, we decided to stick with appetizers and salads. And after doing so much hiking, a nice salad sounded good! When we arrived the place was half full and yet the staff seemed to be in the weeds for our entire meal….which took over 2 1/2 hours!

We started off with the "Korean BBQ Chicken Wings". This was the first item out, it took an hour to get to our table.

A basic Cho-jang style sauce, overly sweet, the coating mushy, and worst of all, I think this was refry job since the flesh of the wings, while fully cooked, was cold!

The flavors on the Roasted Mushroom Flatbread wasn't too bad.

Decent earthy flavors, the arugula a nice foil for the mushrooms and boursin. But that crust was so doughy, like it hadn't been baked long enough.

And while we waited another 45 minutes for our salads, they would be the best items we had.

The Strawberry – Pistachio Salad was quite refreshing.

Though it had no pistachios wince they had run out, so they subbed sunflower seeds, which did just fine. The balsamic dressing added a sweet-acidity, and the greens were very fresh.

I really enjoyed the Ancient Grain Salad.

All the textures and nutty-earthiness of the Ancient Grain mix, cucumbers, sweet carrots, pickled red onions, and salty-savory parmesan cheese did well with the sun dried tomato dressing.

Service was really s-l-o-w, but when it comes down to it; this might be the best "National Park meal" we've had. And the view wasn't too shabby.

38DC5008-B65F-495E-9AC0-B146313910FA There are four homemade soups offered here: Chicken Noodle, Chicken Tortilla, Broccoli Cheddar and Clam Chowder.  The chicken ones are priced at $5.50 and $6.40; the vegetarian is $5.25 and $6.15 and the chowder is $6.50 and $7.75 if purchased as an individual cup or bowl.  No extra charges for the combo plate.  Clam Chowder it is, and it is wonderful.  Creamy, rich with clam juice and a lot of clam meat.  Tiny diced potatoes and celery.  Perfectly seasoned (no need to add salt or pepper), this was really the best we've had out here.

Quality ingredients.  Open for more than 35 years.  Made it through Covid-19.  Sunrise Deli is a great place.

Paragon Deli Cafe (Point Loma)

It was three years ago when Kirk first posted about Paragon Deli Cafe.   I had commented about something on the menu.

Linguica, ham, roast beef, cheese, topped with a runny fried egg and sauce covering it all-including the fries.  The sauce-you can taste the beer as well as the whiskey.  Magical and it makes me understand why Kirk craved (then raved) about this wonderful sandwich.

You will notice on the menu the namesake Pacific Paragon Sandwich ($12.95), which originated at Marston's Tea Room.  Marston's was a downtown San Diego Department Store before being sold to The Broadway in 1961.  This sandwich won a 1960 American Restaurant Magazine award for "Best Sandwich".

Iron Pig – A Takeout Revisit

The recent warm weather had the Missus craving takeout from Iron Pig. So I dropped by, placed an order, and then went to do a quick visit to Trader Joe's. My takeout was ready when I returned to Iron Pig. I had found parking nearby and everything just seemed hunky dory.

On my last post, I noted that the wings were dry and tough. Unfortunately, these were basically the same.

Large, meaty wings, but super dry and tough, and the large size meant that it was somewhat lacking in enough smokiness.

I also got the Rib Tips and specifically asked for sauce on the side. Sadly, this must have been lost in the translation.

Our favorite menu item over the years is the Man Salad…make that the Gender Neutral Salad. Which looked mighty appetizing.

Until we started eating….and started noticing something…hidden underneath all those fries and brisket.

I take no pleasure in typing this out and it's kind of sad to get a meal like this from a place that's been a favorite over the years. We understand that times are tough and are trying to support local businesses, but it seems like the appreciation is not being returned? Not quite sure what to make of this meal…..

More Than Sandwiches – Exploring Other Options at SuperNatural Sandwiches

 C-19 Super 01b  Man, it seems we're in this never ending cycle of Covid during the pandemic….time just kind of slides by. I thought I had "just" posted on SuperNatural Sandwiches, but that post was back in May of last year!

At that time the ordering and pick-up was still being done at the outside counter. But, just as I'm transitioning back to the office, SuperNatural has also been transitioning and now has the old counter work in effect, with indoor dining and such. While I'm not quite ready for this with the latest variant; I'm still doing online takeout orders which work with the same efficiency as before.

And while it's quite easy to order the same 'ol, same 'ol……."FOYs" like Loren and Junichi have really given some nice recommendations to add some variety into my fairly boring life. Loren had both recommended the fries and the salad variation, which has been added to my ordering routine.

The recent super hot weather has gotten me to order the Salad version of the Kirin a couple of times.

No Wich Super 01  No Wich Super 02  Which has kinda been in the rotation recently. The Kirin – with plump shrimp and Chinese sausage just does so well in a salad. And the portion size is quite generous. I don't need to order any fries with this as I'm stuffed……the dressing also does quite nicely as well.

After having this salad, I wondered how the two other preparations would do. Junichi mentioned having the fried rice option (+ $1), so on my next visit I decided to order the Kirin as fried rice….and of course I added a Fried Egg (+ $2).

No Wich Super 03 No Wich Super 04  Well, this was a bit puzzling for me as I wasn't a great fan of the lettuce in my fried rice. While the rice was nicely coated in a soy sauce mixture, it was on the dry and hard side.

I addition, that egg was overcooked as well.

There also didn't seem to be as much Chinese sausage as I had in the salad on my previous visit. 

Overall, it seemed a bit odd and one-dimensional. If I have the fried rice option again; it might be with some other sandwich "option". Maybe Junichi can reveal what his "go-to" for the fried rice might be.

Finally, I decided to get the Kirin as Garlic Noodles (+$4). To be perfectly honest, I didn't quite know what to expect.

No Wich Super 06  No Wich Super 07 And while the container didn't seem particularly large, it was quite heavy. And upon opening the cover….whew…this was garlic noodles alright. Good thing the office was basically empty and after eating lunch all the meetings were via Zoom. I also had to discard the mask I wore on this day.

The standard issue noodles were nicely coated with a soy based sauce, the noodles were nicely prepared and still al dente. I did finish all of the shrimp and sausage and had a ton of noodles left, which I had with dinner. Talk about a major carb bomb, but this wasn't bad at all. The sauce for the shrimp went well with things and I didn't mind having cucumber with my noodles. 

The one thing I would really like next time is to have the scallions on top of things. The noodles were obviously just dumped into the container, the green onions in a clump at the bottom. The only way I found it was after eating all the shrimp and the sausage; I gave things a good mix, which, based on how stuffed the whole container was, would not have worked out well with a full container. Still, I'd have this again……when I need to carb load….

You know, these times have me grasping for that which is familiar and comforting. I've been a customer of SuperNatural since they were at the San Diego Public Market and was quite happy when they finally opened a brick and mortar shop (where Gourmet Artisan is now located), before settling into their current location (of course they are still open in Little Italy).

The folks working have always been friendly and my online order is always ready at the designated time. Which keeps me coming back……

Roadtrip (During Covid-19) – Walking Around San Luis Obispo and Revisiting Firestone Grill 7 Years Later

After yet another nice meal at Madeline's in Cambria (and that beautiful sunset), we slept well. And after a wonderful night's sleep, I got up early, and just as on our previous visit walked on over to Cambria Coffee Roasting Company to get the Missus Her pour over and a Cold Brew for me.

Like Paso Robles; there's something about Cambria that is very comfortable and on this, our second trip here within a year, it all felt familiar.

We just relaxed and took our sweet time. We had one more stop before heading home and it was basically a 45 minute drive South. Finally, fully awake we headed off….to San Luis Obispo. We had made a stop in SLO years back, but I had wanted to stay for a night. But man, those hotel prices in the downtown area….over $300 a night! Yikes. So, I booked what was basically a motor inn right off the 101 and a short 15 minute walk into the heart of "SLO". Of course we had gotten in quite early; check-in wasn't until 3pm. So, the motel was nice enough to let us park in the lot and we decided to stretch our legs and grab some lunch.

We basically walked up Higuera Street then took a left on Broad Street. We were playing by ear.

IMG_9103  IMG_9102 The Missus had decided that She wanted to see Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa, so we headed off in that direction. We meandered along, crossing over San Luis Obispo Creek; stopping to check out some of the public art.

The creek has nice green spaces and a creekside trail. And some of the restaurants and bars have what seems like serene creekside seating.

We passed the History Center and headed up to Palm and the garden area of the Mission.

It was a nice, peaceful area to take a break. The Mission is well known for the bells and bellringers.

After a short break we headed off to the front of the Mission.

And the bells went off just as we turned the corner.

IMG_9120  IMG_9118 The Mission was founded in 1772 by; you guessed it; Junípero Serra. The site itself is fascinating as the area was called Ilano de los Osos (though some say it was La Cañada de los Osos – "Valley of the Bears") "Plain of the Bears" by Juan Crespí, a Franciscan Missionary who documented Gaspar de Portolá's expedition thru what is now California.

There was a nice art display in Mission Plaza and all along SLO called the May Flower Initiative, with some wonderful, colorful displays.

There was something I wanted to check out just a block over. You see; once upon a time, like many cities in California, SLO had a Chinatown (there's a great article here). A block over from the Mission are the remnants of that Chinatown. The most well known being the Ah Louis Store.

Ah Louis is probably the most well known and most successful of those that settled in SLO. The Ah Louis Store still stands; though it's now called "Karson Butler Events at the Ah Louis Store".

IMG_9112  IMG_9113  Another business that still exists is Mee Heng Low; you can read a wonderful article on the business here. One can only imagine what challenges these folks had to overcome. The anti-Chinese sentiment, the Chinese Exclusion Act……and there are times…at least these days, where I think we haven't evolved very far from the racism and hate of those days.

By this time, the Missus was getting a bit hungry…..after a short discussion….a very short discussion, we thought it would be kinda cool to revisit Firestone Grill, which we really enjoyed over 7 years ago! My how time flies……

So we walked on over.

They were doing great business; but folks were all wearing masks and distancing and other processes were in place.

We placed our order at one counter; found a table outside. They had closed tables in order to distance diners….a nice job overall.

Soon enough our number was called and I headed off to another area to pick up our food. We had ordered the exact same items as on our previous visit.

The Missus got Her massive Steak Cobb Salad ($11.99), which She plowed thru like there's no tomorrow.

Yes, that tri-tip does well on this; but man, it's the bacon and blue cheese that makes the salad in my opinion. And with all that flavor, who needs dressing.

I got the Trip-tip Sandwich (no BBQ sauce please).

They still gave me BBQ sauce; but at least it was on the side….that sauce is way too sweet and for me doesn't bring anything to the sandwich. Not quite as much tri-tip as I recall; but it is still moist and tender, beefy with mild smokiness….I do like the roll they use; lightly toasted, a bit of garlic butter…yeasty. This was quite good……..even 7 years later!

There was one additional stop I wanted to make; Bubblegum Alley….but when we got there, the Missus was so grossed out that She told me I'd be napping in the car if I walked in…..

I dunno; we had been to the Gum Wall in Seattle……but maybe being surrounded by stuff that's been chewed…saliva and all that….in the heat of mid-day?

That's fine……at this point in time, that nap in air conditioned goodness was more important to me!

Summertime Seafood Salads

It's Summer Vacation time here at mmm-yoso!!! Kirk and His Missus are enjoying a few days together.  Cathy is writing this post.

We have been having some daily heat waves over the past month or so.  Thankfully, with the cooling down at night, it isn't unbearable.  The Mister and I have been going out for lunch and I noticed a pattern in our orders.

We finally ventured back to Las Morelianas/La Bahia after missing it for more than a year and were happy to see it was still open and thriving.  

 5CFBD05B-1894-436D-82F5-B7575AFB1FF9 We always try to order from each 'side' of the menu/kitchen and to compliment the carnitas craving, we decided on a simple fish salad ($9).  Nicely grilled tilapia on lettuce with cucumber, tomato and avocado.  Quite large and refreshing..
5CFBD05B-1894-436D-82F5-B7575AFB1FF9 When we went to Chopstix Too!, it was another memorable return. The menu is about the same and one of our choices that day was the Grilled Seafood salad ($13).  The wonderful char on the shrimp and the salmon was a forgotten flavor I had missed.  
5CFBD05B-1894-436D-82F5-B7575AFB1FF9 .Since Covid-19, the 'food court' area of the 'first' HMart had been closed (it re-opened about two months ago).  So, our pre-shopping meals have been at The Fancy Fish (after it re-opened with indoor seating).  Deceptive photo.  The salad bowl is HUGE, deep, filled with what might be the equivalent of a whole package of salad greens.  It is topped with FOUR soft shell crabs.  $14.50 and worth it. 5088F19C-9451-4246-B7C8-30CC52C8125B Recently, returning to Anthony's in La Mesa brought back so many good memories.  We are happy they have managed to stay open.  It was crowded, there was a wait for tables both inside and outdoors, but seating in the Bar area was available.  The Seafood Cobb Salad ($18.95 on the lunch menu (Monday-Saturday)) was my choice. Real crab, bay shrimp and chilled cooked salmon, along with bacon, tomatoes, carrot, egg, avocado, the house dressing…a perfect meal.

A898DB73-5991-4AFE-8762-6F28C113F2CE We've also been stopping at La Mesa Bistro, but mostly for breakfasts.  We arrived at 11:30 one day and looked at the lunch menu.  The "Gourmet Tropical Salad" ($10.95) caught my eye.  I saw you could add tuna salad or shrimp for $5.50.  Perfect! Cabbage, cucumber, carrots, tomato, walnuts. dried cranberries, strawberries, blackberries and blueberries on top of organic mixed greens, with a basil vinaigrette (which perfectly complimented the sweet berries).  The tuna salad- high quality tuna, simply made and plenty (the two scoops were more than one can in volume).

Ume Dressing

Ume Dressing 01The Missus was getting tired of Her typical Arugula/green salad, even though I made the vinaigrette from scratch.

So, I decided to start looking thru my cookbooks for some inspiration. This one is from Yotam Ottolenghi's Plenty More. The recipe uses ume puree….so I went hunting for umeboshi paste and found a couple of different brands. The one that won out; both for intensity and balanced flavor was also the most expensive, $8.99 at Nijiya. Regardless; the Missus loves this sprout salad. I use three different types of sprouts; radish, a milder more conventional (i.e. broccoli) sprout, and something with a bit of peppery boldness – arugula or kale sprouts.

I usually make double this recipe, which is good for four good sized salads – in other words four lunches for the Missus.

It does deviate a bit from the original in Ottolenghi's book; but not greatly. I use more ume paste, less Sesame Oil, freshly ground black pepper, I also use more neutral oil (avocado); and also sneak in agave syrup (of course).

2 Tsp Ume Paste (depending on brand, you may need more)
1 Tb Organic Rice Vinegar
1 Tb Lime Juice – Fresh Squeezed
2 Tb Minced Shallot
1 Tb Soy Sauce – I found the Kikkoman works well in this recipe
1 Tb White Sugar
1 Tsp Agave Syrup
1/4 Tsp Sesame Oil
5 Tb Avocado Oil

– Combine first 9 ingredients in a bowl and whisk

To make the salad I mix the base ingredients in a salad bowl – 1 cup shelled edamame, thinly sliced radish and onion (sliced then briefly soaked in cold/ice water to remove the harshness), thinly sliced red cabbage, cilantro leaves, sliced cherry tomatoes, the three sprouts…

I put into a Pyrex container for the Missus and add several more items….what She calls "the good stuff", sliced avocado, cucumber, and either thinly sliced smoked duck or duck prosciutto (we get ours from D'Artangnan). Add a container of the dressing. The Missus adds in a container of roasted sliced almonds and pumpkin seeds.

Crafted Greens (El Cajon)

Here we are, back at mmm-yoso!!!, a blog about food.  Cathy is writing today while Kirk and His Missus are enjoying sights and meals elsewhere.

ABB17926-DC0B-43F5-83F6-12AA0D9A5985 There are two scratch-made soups available, always the tomato-basil ($3.45) and a rotating flavor.  The tomato-basil has a fresh tomato and basil flavors (I know, I need a thesaurus) with a rich, creamy texture and the size of the bowl is good.  Easily can be considered a light meal.

Margherita was my choice on this Friday (I know, kind of redundant with the tomato soup, but it was a first visit and I wanted to try the 'basics').  A nice, crispy (not overly fluffy/chewy) bread with a good olive oil flavor topped with the Mozzarella, tomatoes and basil.  This is, also, a large portion and enough to be a light meal.  
0A769030-FB8F-48D3-813B-2F187165EB4F The Nicoise Salad ($9.95, add a protein $3(ahi tuna)) was wonderful!  Romaine, Mesclun, green beans, egg, tomatoes, fingerling potatoes, capers, olives, dijon balsamic vinaigrette…all very crisp/fresh/bright in flavors.   The medium rare Ahi tuna was seared with a Cajun seasoning, which was just enough to not need any of the other condiments offered.  

If you order a beverage, you get it yourself the first time (the machine is next to the cash register), but someone is always checking on how your meal is going and will refill your beverage (even water) from the soda machine.

We will be returning to try more of the menu very soon.

Revisits – (No sandwiches at) SuperNatural Sandwiches and Daddy’s Hot Dogs

I guess this one might be a R(ecommendations) & R(equests) & R(evisits) post. Here are two recommendations that were made quite recently on various posts.

In the comments section of my last post on SuperNatural Sandwiches, Loren mentioned the following:

“The Kirin is my go to Salad as well, honestly I love how those flavors are great for anyone doing the keto thing.”
“Oh and if you haven’t had their plain fries (not the triton or whatever) they may be the best in SD.”

Which kind of got my attention, so when I had a chance I headed back to the Miramar location of Supernatural. And got the Kirin as a salad; which ended up being pretty huge…..

RR SuperNatural 01 RR SuperNatural 02And pretty good to boot! I enjoyed this dressing more than the aioli that is used to top the sandwiches. It was a lot of greens; but mixed with the pickled veggies and cucumber and with bites of tender shrimp and sweet lup cheong in between, this was very good.

And yes Loren, those fries are really good. The potatoes have been lightly dusted, giving it a bit more of a crunch and the interior is nice and fluffy. The seasoning has enough salt and spice to keep things interesting……I only ate a few and spread the rest around the office and folks really enjoyed it.

So thanks Loren for giving me a few more options for lunchtime!

Daddy’s Hot Dogs:

Meanwhile, in the comments section of my last post on Chicago Fire Grill; DerekR mentioned liking the Chicago Dogs at Daddy’s Hot Dogs in Hillcrest. Which got me checking on when I did my post on Daddy’s Hot Dogs….geeez, man it was 2011!

After a recent meeting; I made it a point to find some parking and return to Daddy’s. He was just rolling out the two “tables” and such when I arrived and chatted me up, just like I’d been there yesterday.

The menu has changed over time, there are still a few interesting options. I ordered two dogs to go and watched “daddy” make them in his very methodical manner; nothing is rushed and things take a bit of time here.

Which all comes out when you take a look at those hot dogs.

RR Daddys 02 RR Daddys 03So, what did I think? Well, Daddy splits the dogs before griddling; though they still retain a good “snap”. The buns are heated, but not steamed…..

The “Chicago Dog” is sorta, kinda, but not really a Chicago Dog; the pickled jalapenos are way hotter and less sweet than sport peppers. though it’s a visual thing, I like the look of the fluorescent-radioactive green relish. The tomatoes were decently ripe which added to the pleasure; though the flavor of the dog is definitely different than the typical Vienna Beef dog that’s used for a Chicago Dog. I appreciated the nice sprinkling of celery salt.

I also ordered the “O” and really enjoyed it. Russian dressing sounds a bit odd; but it went well with the diced tomatoes and slice of bacon……the flavor of the hot dog really complemented the RR Daddys 04rich mayo based dressing quite well and the griddled onions added some sweetness and depth of flavor to things.

I actually enjoyed this more than the Chicago Dog…..the folks in the office kept asking each other; “hey….what’s that really good smell….”

Well, it was some pretty good hot dogs from Daddy’s. I gotta get back more often,
