Sizzling House Has Closed, Juewei becoming L.A. Hot Duck, and Isaki Japanese Restaurant Taking the Former 85°C Spot

Here’s some stuffs I noticed in the Clairemont Mesa/Kearny Mesa area recently.

Sizzling House Has Closed:

Noticed this during our most recent visit to Eastern Dynasty.

Whoa, Sizzling House didn’t even last a year. So, much for the sizzling plate/pepper lunch fad, huh? Looks like this is going to be an outlet of Las Vegas based Urban Matcha…so one feeds another?

Juewei Becoming L.A. Hot Duck:

Also during that visit we noticed a new banner covering the Juewei sign.

Funny thing, I just mentioned how dissatisfied we’d been with our most recent visits to Juewei in my post on Spicy Duck Wang La Ya. Juewei seemed to be constantly changing concepts, last I saw they were trying to do Hot Pot, before that they had initiated doing skewers. They had an inconsistent inventory of items we enjoyed and we just decided to stop and not waste our time there.

So, I’m not sure if it’s still the same owners with a new concept….I do know there’s a LA Hot Duck in Rowland Heights. What’s up with all these places from the SGV opening here? They do not appear to be open yet; so we’ll see!

And finally….

Isaki Japanese Restaurant and Nothing Bundt Cakes Taking the Former 85°C  Spot:

I noticed some signage on the doors of what used to be 85°C off Balboa so I walked on over. Looks like they’ve split the spot into two businesses.

One of the signs said Isaki Japanese Restaurant.

And the other looks to be another franchise of Nothing Bundt Cakes.

I don’t have much to say about this one…..

Midweek Meanderings – The Macaron Shop Replacing GyroGrill, El Sazon de Nayarit Truck replacing Mariscos Tone Camaron at Harland (Bay Park), and Sumo Go Coming to the Former Bunny Chow Spot

Well, since we’re hitting the trifecta of Valentine’s Day, President’s Day, and Lunar New Year, I’m thinknig all of you are pretty busy right now so I thought I’d just do a quick post of places I’ve come across over the last couple of weeks.

The Macaron Shop Replacing GyroGrill:

I was a bit surprised to learn that GyroGrill closed recently. I knew a few folks that really liked the place. I recently revisited Tenkatori and saw that the Macaron Shop was replacing GyroGrill and they even had a stand already set-up on the walkway.

El Sazon de Nayarit Truck replacing Mariscos Tone Camaron:

A couple of weeks back, I noticed that the Mariscos Tone Camaron trailer was gone from the side street behind Harland on Napier in Bay Park.

A couple of weeks later, I saw this Food Truck in the spot.

Not sure if the folks from the Mariscos Tone Camaron took over this truck, I waited a bit until I saw Logan, one of the great guys who works at Harland and he told me this is another truck. The Mariscos Tone folks have also upgraded to a truck, but it’s now at a different location.

San Diego, CA 92110

Sumo Go Coming to the Former Bunny Chow Spot:

Bunny Chow which replaced LouZiana Food closed a while ago. I’ve finally seen some activity in the spot. Looks like something named Sumo Go is taking the spot?

Not 100% sure, but I’m thinking it might be part of the Japanese Grab-n-Go trend?

Anyway, hope everyone is staying warm and dry with another storm hitting us the next couple of days!

Honolulu – Waiola Shave Ice

After having our poke at Ali’i Fish Market we decided to head on back to Ala Moana. It was actually enjoyable walking since there were so many memories in the area…looking at the huge First Hawaiian Bank building….I recalled when Chunky’s Drive In was there. And of course there’s Stadium Park….I’m old enough to remember the old Honolulu Stadium…I even saw some Islander games there.

Ah yes…the good old “Termite Palace“!

Right around this time; the Missus was wanting some “dessert” and I knew just the place. Just about a block away is Waiola Shave Ice…..which has been around as long as I can remember.

Way before they opened a shop in Kapahulu, there was this original location. I don’t have much of a sweet tooth these days; but I thought the Missus would enjoy some refreshing shave ice on this day. I haven’t been here in nearly 30 years and my goodness has the menu expanded!

I remember first having shave ice at the Zoo…and basically strawberry was the only flavor. Oh my, look at all the flavors these days!

The Missus ended up getting a Rainbow with Ube Mochi.

The blue color for vanilla has always kinda freaked me out.

We had a seat in the back of Waiola with all the stuffed animals and “stuffs”…..

And the Missus really enjoyed the shave ice….She said it wasn’t overly sweet and so refreshing….and of course; it’s so Hawaii.

And of course She asked why I hadn’t brought Her here before! Well, we were never close by….but now, especially with walking and not having to find parking; well, the time was right!

Shave ice….so many good memories…..

Midweek Meanderings -China Quick Wok Becoming Fujiyame (Sp?) Ramen, Mikiya Replacing Shancheng Lameizi, and is Poppy Boba Closed?

Here’s a bunch of “stuffs” I noticed while driving around the last couple of weeks

China Quick Wok Becoming Fujiyame:

Driving thru Liberty Park Plaza, on the corner of Mt Etna and Genesee, I noticed some new signage on the long standing China Quick Wok, so I drove on over.

And yep; it looks like the shop is becoming something called Fujiyame – hmmm….not Fujiyama Ramen? Whoa, China Quick Wok has been here forever, I recall the last set of owners taking over in 2011?

4310 Genesee Ave.
San Diego, CA 92117

Mikiya Replacing Shancheng Lameizi:

This one was quite easy to see while driving down Convoy.

Shancheng Lameizi replaced Thai House in early 2022 if I’m not mistaken. Man, they didn’t last very long. Well, one chain is being replaced by another as Mikiya Wagyu Shabu House is moving in. I know they have locations in LA and also recall seeing one of their restaurants in HNL on Kapiolani. I know folks that really like the place. So, looks like Shabu Shabu replacing Hot Pot here?

4225 Convoy St.
San Diego, CA 92111

Is Poppy Boba Closed?:

Taking the quick way home from Nijiya I passed by Poppy Boba Kitchen and noticed that the sign was gone. It was just after 11am, when they would usually be open.

It seems like they were closed? I believe they just opened like 7 months ago?

So, I did a quick search and Google and the four-lettered spot said Temporarily Closed? But why is the sign gone. And there was also this note.

Hmmm……temporarily closed for like 9-10 months? Perhaps someone is going to give birth perhaps?

It’s just kinda strange to have the sign gone though….

Hope everyone is having a great week!

Midweek Meanderings – Greenhaus Vegetarian Eatery becoming Modern Kabob, Cafe 88 Coming to Linda Vista, and Guess Who’s Opening Indya Restaurant?

Just a few things….and an interesting coincidence for hump day……

Greenhaus Vegetarian Eatery:

Driving North on Morena Boulevard trying to avoid all the crazy road construction, I noticed a sign on Greenhaus Vegetarian Eatery.

IMG_0881

I didn't even know they closed. Though while checking out their Instagram, I came across an interesting coincidence…..scroll down a bit further and you'll see.

1118 Morena Blvd.
San Diego, CA 92110

Cafe 88 Coming to Linda Vista:

And up on Linda Vista Road; there was even a bigger sign…..

IMG_0872

In what used to be Babe Kombucha. I'm wondering if this has the same ownership of a business with an identical name in El Cajon?

5401 Linda Vista Rd #409
San Diego, CA 92110

and finally….

Guess Who's Opening Indya Restaurant?:

Talk about coincidences….I was driving past the building that used to house Boomerang's Gourmet Burger off Clairemont Drive and noticed some new signage so I took a turn into the parking lot.

IMG_0915

I took a photo to do a post.

Yes, an Indian restaurant on Clairemont Drive.

But like those Infomercials go; "but wait, there's more"!

While looking thru Greenhaus's Instagram account, guess what I found?

Greenhaus becomes Indya

Interesting, yeah?

Paris – Jeffrey Cagnes (Rue Montorgueil) and Dinner at Le Colimacon

After lunch, we took a nice siesta. Upon awakening, the Missus decided it was the correct hour for le goûter (tea time).

So, we headed on over to Rue Montorgueil (of course) and the Missus picked up some tea from Mariage Freres.

IMG_3385

IMG_3384

IMG_3383

And then of course she needed to find some dessert. Our usual stop on the street would be Fou de Pâtisserie, but the Missus wanted to try somethin different. Right up the street is a location of Jeffrey Cagnes, which had opened at the end of 2022. The place had always been pretty packed on our previous trip to Paris, but now it looked like things had settled down a bit.

IMG_3386

The Missus liked the look of the pistachio tarte.

IMG_3388

So that's what we got.

It was actually a pistachio – orange tarte.

IMG_3392

Which the Missus enjoyed with Her tea. Edging on overly sweet, hints of orange, hints of earthy-nutty-vanilla.

IMG_3393

Jeffrey Cagnes
73 Rue Montorgueil
75002 Paris, France

We enjoyed just relaxing before heading out to dinner.

IMG_3396

While in Milan the Missus requested that I cancel our reservations at Septime and make reservations at a place named Le Colimacon instead. I'd never heard of the place, but went ahead and cancelled Septime and made requested reservations for dinner. The "modern bistro" is located in the Marais on a street we're fairly familiar with Rue Vieille du Temple, where Breizh Café, Edwart Chocolatier, and other places we'd been to are located. We arrived at opening which was at a very "un-Paris like" 630pm. Most Parisians dine after 8pm.

IMG_3398

The restaurant is warm and cozy and there's also an upstairs area as well. Service was very attentive and we were spoken to totally in English….which are "red flags" for me with regards to dining in Paris.

The prices weren't too bad and there seemed to be some interesting items on the menu.

IMG_3397

Though there was an item on the iPad menu that I wasn't going to order……

IMG_3399

I think there was something "lost in translation" here? Hmmm……

Of course I started with a nice Kir Royale!

IMG_3400

Which sadly would be the highlight of the meal.

Though the baguette was yeasty and quite good.

IMG_3407

First up was the Frisée with poached egg and "lard croustillant"…that would be crispy bacon.

IMG_3406

The frisée was crisp with nice, bitter tones, and the vinaigrette complemented it well. The poached egg was ice cold and the yolk overcooked and hard. It also had that fishy flavor. The bacon was on the burnt and bitter side and was chewy instead of being crisp.

The Croustilles de Escargot was up next.

IMG_3411

The pastry that the escargot rested in lacked crispness. The escargot was fine; nice and meaty, but the persillade needed more "umph" and was weak in the garlic and flavorful olive oil department.

Seeing Huitres…..oysters from Normandy with a truffle gratinee on the menu…well, you know I had to order that, right?

IMG_3401

The oysters were nice and plump with an almost sweet-briney finish.

IMG_3413

But the sauce overpowered the bivalves and we really couldn't make out any truffle flavor either.

The last dish up was the Cassolette de Champignons.

IMG_3414

This usually creamy mushroom dish was served at room temp, which made it really gluey and pasty. The overall flavor was quite bland.

Overall, nice service though a fairly mediocre meal. All the customers were tourists, which is quite telling.

Le Colimacon
44 Rue Vieille du Temple
75004 Paris, France

As we were leaving the restaurant I asked the Missus how She heard about this place. She then told me that the daughter of the owner has a very popular Instagram account! Say what???

IMG_3417

The place was packed with folks waiting outside when we left……ah yes, the "influencer effect".

IMG_3419

As we walked back to our room; I tried to recall when we had two mediocre meals in a row in Paris?

Well, I was determined not to make it three in a row!

Na Tart (Clairemont) – A Soft Opening Visit

On a recent visit to Aldi, I noticed that Na Tart, which I had first noticed back in May seemed to be open.

Na Tart 01

The doors were open and it looked like some games and stuffs were out.

Na Tart 02

So, I walked on over and peeked in. I was told that they are indeed in a soft opening phase, With currently only Egg Tarts available for $3.50 a piece.

Na Tart 03

Though prices are cheaper when ordering in volume. All the other flavors were currently not available. Pardon the photos of the signs…the reflection really didn't do my photos good.

Na Tart 03c

Na Tart 04

I decided to get two tarts for the Missus. It seemed like they are still getting their processes set as I stood cooling my heels for about ten minutes with staff standing right in front of me. When I asked if I could get some tarts the six people behind the counter looked at each other blankly as if trying to figure out who was tasked with waiting on customers….it was kind of funny.

Anyway, I got two tarts and brought them home.

Na Tart 05

Of course I dare not touch them until the Missus got home!

So, the tarts are fairly "eggy" and on the sweeter side. The crust is light and initially crisp, though it does deteriorate over time. I think we could have done with something a bit more buttery.

Na Tart 06

Not bad, but not sure about these being $3.50 a piece.

Now for some good news. In case you want to try some of the other flavors of egg tarts, Na Tart's first California location, whose headquarters is based in Flushing NY, will be celebrating their grand opening tomorrow, the 4th of July. And it appears the first 50 customers will get a free tart.

Na Tart 07

So, in case you needed any motivation to, ahem "egg" you on and have a "tarty" (sorry, couldn't help myself) 4th, tomorrow's your chance.

Monday Meanderings – Potato Powder Love Noodle (for real) replacing Shann Xi Magic Kitchen in 99 Ranch Market (Balboa), TP Tea coming to Clairemont Town Square, and slicing your own bread at Whole Foods

I'm doing one of these "meanderings" posts today because I just noticed a couple of things over the last two days that I thought interesting.

TP Tea coming to Clairemont Town Square:

I took JJ to an early morning walk and since I like to keep it some variety, I'll often rotate venues. For some reason, I headed on up to Clairemont Town Square early in the morning, and quickly noticed something new.

TP TEa Coming Soon

Looks like the chain TP Tea – which I guess stands for Taiwan Professional Tea, is opening a shop which was the last known location of Isa.Bella, located in the same structure as Main Chick Hot Chicken. For me, this is great, as I always wondered why there weren't more Asian businesses in this huge complex, other than the Panda Express.

San Diego, CA 92117

Slicing your own bread at Whole Foods:

The Missus wanted some escargot for dinner, so I headed to the Cuisinery to restock. She also wanted some bread and I really didn't want to drive to Secret Sister or even Con Pane. So, I decided to head on over to Whole Foods La Jolla, which is sort of on the way to the Cuisinery. I had gotten the Baby Boule from there before and had it sliced. It's small and not too expensive and would do in a pinch. When I arrived and walked to the bread counter I asked for a Baby Boule and was told it's now self serve….this includes the slicing of the bread!

WF Sliced Bread 01b

I've seen these used at Con Pane and Secret Sister….but never thought it would be safe for me to use one!

WF Sliced Bread 02

But I just tried it out. It's not hard at all. The hardest part was getting the sliced bread into a bag!

It turned out ok.

WF Sliced Bread 03

And I still have all my fingers…..

Potato Powder Love Noodle replacing Shann Xi Magic Kitchen in 99 Ranch Market (Balboa):

Yesterday, the Missus told me She wanted me to make my Cumin Chinese Cauliflower. So, I headed over to 99 Ranch Market on Balboa. I walked past the food court to see what was happening adn noticed that Shann Xi Magic Kitchen was closed. Which I thought was strange.

Shann Xi Closed 01

There was a note posted on the counter…never a good sign….

Shann Xi Closed 02b

Which just confirmed what I thought…..well, this location of Shann Xi Magic Kitchen is closed. So, it looks like you'll need to go to the Convoy location if you're craving their food.

I also noticed a note on the cash register.

Shann Xi Closed 00

And it seems like "Potato Powder Love Noodle" is opening here next month? What a name! I did a quick search and found that PPLN has shops in San Gabriel and City of Industry. Knife cut and potato noodles (thus the name I guess) with various broths.

Man, Shann Xi is one of the "OG" stands in the food court, which has been kind of a revolving door with Dao Xiang recently replacing Mama Lin's, which replaced Saigon 5, and Cluck n Sip replacing Krispy Krunchy Chicken within the last year.

It seems that places are having a hard time staying in business here.

Sunday Stuffs – Beard Papa Coming to Convoy and Sushi Yorimichi 2 Coming to Linda Vista

Here are two places coming soon that I've noticed while driving around.

Sushi Yorimichi 2 Coming to Linda Vista:

While driving up Linda Vista Road I noticed an ABC Application of Ownership Change posted at the former location of White Rice Morena, so I took a turn into the parking lot and JJ and I walked on over.

IMG_9145

And this one was a surprise to me.

IMG_9144

It looks like Sushi Yorimichi is doing quite well….well enough to open a second location!

Good for them! I hope they do well and am waiting to hear what "FOY" Junichi has got to say about this!

5299 Linda Vista Road
San Diego, CA 92110

Beard Papa Coming to Convoy:

While taking the turn at Balboa and Convoy I saw another sign in the newish strip mall on the corner. So I drove on into the parking lot.

And yes…it was indeed…..

IMG_9146

I had to laugh……like two decades later, we're getting a Beard Papa's in this area? Sheesh…back in 2008 I visited the now defunct location at Plaza Bonita. And I know there was a location in La Jolla that closed last year.

I'm thinking that this is probably where they should have opened years ago. Of course they chose a strip mall with like a dozen parking spaces for customers where Origami Handroll x Kushiyaki Bar is opening.

Not sure if BP's is even suited for Convoy these days; I'm thinking that Westfield UTC would probably be a better location, but we'll see.

Midweek Meanderings – MAKE Cafe on the Move and Na Tart Coming to Clairemont.

Just a quick post for a very pleasant Wednesday.

Make Cafe on the Move?

So, I was doing a post on the last of the trio of places where we had Shakshuka with JJ. It was a shop we saw walking back to our car after having breakfast with JJ at Flora named Make Cafe. We walked over and took a look at the menu, which was quite interesting. When I got back home, I did a quick online search and found out that MAKE stands for "Merging Agriculture, Kitchens and Employment" and MAKE Projects " is a hyperlocal farm, cafe, and social enterprise that empowers refugee and immigrant women through food, agriculture, and community." The Cafe provides refugee women with job training and experience. You can read a wonderful article from San Diego Magazine here that also highlight's the programs founder Anchi Mei.

Anyway, we paid a visit to the cafe which was only open 4 days a week for brunch.

Make Cafe 01

Make Cafe 02

Loved the diversity of the menu and the food was quite good. The service was warm and friendly.

Anyway, as I was prepping this post early last week, I noticed that the Google had them listed as Temporarily Closed. So, I did some checking and yes, it seems that MAKE is on the move; from the location at 2920 University to Felton Street according to their website

Here's what we had.

Make Cafe 03

Make Cafe 04

According to their website; they hope to reopen in late 2025. I'm all for places like this…and yes, I've gone ahead and donated a bit.

Hope they are able to reopen by their projected date.

Na Tart Coming to Clairemont:

**** You can find a post on Na Tart here.

Did some quick shopping at the Aldi on Balboa, when I noticed this coming soon sign in the storefront next to Pho Hut & Grill.

IMG_8694

So, again I took to Google and it seems that this Egg Tart specialist based in Flushing, NYC is opening this shop in San Diego! I believe they are supposed to open in July!

I'm thinking this parking lot just got a bit tighter!
