The Takeout Rotation – HFS at Centerpark Labs, Sue’s Korean Kitchen, and Tenkatori

Just clearing out the memory card here with some takeout revisits. Looking at my takeout "rotation" I quickly noticed a couple of consistencies in my choices. The places all open before 11. I get to work quite early in the morning and am not a big fan of crowds. So, if I can grab my lunch by 1030 or so, I'm happy. It seems like these places actually opened during the pandemic. And of course, it's not a far drive to any of these places for me.

So, here goes.

HFS at Centerpark Labs:

It's been a while since I'd done a post on HFS and I'd just got done making a final visit to Poke 8th and B recently (post upcoming). We had nice, almost late spring weather before the storm set in today; so it seemed like the perfect time to grab some poke from HFS.

I arrived five minutes before opening and got in and out in minutes.

Got the shoyu and the "Kilauea" which had some pretty good spice. This did hit the spot. Good quality fish, nutty brown rice……

Sue's Korean Kitchen:

Sue's has been a regular Kimchi Fried Rice spot for me since my first visit in spring of 2021. I was a bit surprised at how much the serving size seemed to have shrunk on my last visit, so I needed to return to check things out.

They always seem so happy to see me here and are so nice. Which is one of the reasons I keep returning.

So, how was it? Well, it seems that my previous visit was just an off-day as the portion size returned to what I had on previous visits.

Rice was a bit mushier than normal; but I enjoyed the spam, the fermented spiciness of the dish.

And last, but not least, yes yet another visit to Tenkatori. I've been a regular here since my first visits in spring of 2022. I always go at the 1030 opening time. That parking lot can be a horror show. I also will usually order when I arrive or call it in, ever since I noticed a $3 upcharge for online orders.

I had recently read Kat's post about getting tori nanban and was craving that. So, that's what I got.

Whoa, the tartar sauce here is a bit too rich for my taste. I felt like I needed a shower after eating this!

Yes, just like when I tried it before, there wasn't enough vinegar tones in this to cut all the richness. I gotta get back to Okan and see if I still enjoy their tori nanban.

On my next visit a couple of days later it was back to the same 'ol, same 'ol.

Bonchon Revisited

It's funny how timing and seasonality will drive our cravings. One real interesting thing, at least for me with having the Big List is to notice habits. For instance, I was recently wondering how Bonchon was doing and decided to drop by for the lunch special….if it still existed. When I took a look at the list, I noticed that all my visits were in January. Granted one of them was a take out visit….but that was in January as well! And I also realized that I hadn't been to Bonchon in three years!

So, I decided to drop by for lunch and arrived a few minutes after 11. Man, the exterior of the place is looking kinda worn down.

It was almost strange to see tables and chairs in the place. The last time I was here, everything was stacked and moved to the side, making it a huge cavernous space.

I went and ordered what I'd enjoyed the most during my visits; the lunch special 8 piece wings soy-garlic, with pickled radish as the side, now priced at $13.45. For some reason, I was craving kimchi, I hadn't ever tried it at Bonchon, so I went with a side order ($3.15). The young man working was very efficient and quite nice. And soon enough my wings arrived.

Bonchon Rev 03  Bonchon Rev 04  Man, I forgot how much mul kimchi is provided. These weren't as sweet as I recalled and provided and was a good foil for the sweetness in the wings.

The baechu kimchi actually wasn't bad. Slightly fermented, good spice, I was rather surprised.

Bonchon Rev 06 Bonchon Rev 07  As for the wings; well it's a personal preference; I prefer crisp over highly battered and too crunchy. I enjoy smaller wings with a good skin to meat ratio, rather than jumbo, meaty, and often dry wings. This is why I had enjoyed getting the wings from Bonchon. So, how did these fare? Well, it seemed to be more "sauced" than I recall, though it was evenly coated. The sauce seemed a bit sweeter as well, I would have enjoyed a bit more pungency. The coating was crisp, but I'm glad I had this onsite since I don't think it would have stood up as takeout. The wings were moist, the meat tender, though I did see some black spotting, which can lead to off flavors, but this was fine. And for some reason, it brought back memories of our "KFC" visits to places like Kkanbu and Mirak in Seoul.

Well, in the end, perhaps I'll find a new K(orean) F(ried) C(hicken) place in the future, but for now Bonchon will do just fine for a yearly (January) fix!

Sunday Stuffs – Eat Crispy Burger Coming to Convoy, Bann Korean Cuisine Closes, and News on China Max

A couple of things I've seen during my shopping trips to the Kearny Mesa Area.

Eat Crispy Burger Coming to Convoy:

While passing the building housing Starbucks and Yakyudori, I noticed some window signage in one of the units.

So, I took a quick turn into the parking lot.

So, it seems that a location of Encinitas Eat Crispy Burger is coming to this location. I guess they want to give The Friendly some smashburger competition in the area?

Bann Korean Cuisine Closes:

Recently, the Missus needed some cosmetics from the shop in H Mart. I really don't get over there too often, basically because of the parking situation, but we headed on over and scorede a parking spot. While the Missus was paying for Her "stuffs", I walked on over to the food court and noticed that Bann Korean Cuisine had closed.

Bummer. Though I really didn't visit the place as much when they moved to the H Mart food court, I used to visit quite often when they were located on Miramar Road. Perhaps moving to this location was not a great move? It's seems that turnover here might be pretty high as Katzya closed up shop here recently as well.

And finally, News on China Max:

In one of my posts last month, I mentioned dropping by the location of China Max's reconstruction. In the comments "FOY" Julie asked if I knew what was going on. Well, this past week Eater San Diego had an answer.

In case you hadn't read or heard; the original owners of China Max had decided to sell the restaurant. The new owners also own Taste of Hong Kong. Per the reporting from Helen I Hwang in the Eater post:

"Its food focus is still developing, but options include Szechuan cuisine, a noodle house, or dim sum and a Cantonese menu similar to China Max."

Not sure how I feel about that.

COMC, the Takeout Edition – De Cabeza/El Único, Zgara, Sue’s Korean Kitchen, and One More….

So, here's a collection of takeout revisits on places I've posted on a bajillion times. 

De Cabeza/El Único:

I was off on a Wednesday and wanted something rich, beefy, and hefty for lunch, so De Cabeza was a natural pick. We hadn't been in a while and Cabeza en su Jugo is so nice during colder weather.

I forgot that Wednesday is Jesus's day off. He really knows how to put things together the way we like. 

Still, this was quite savory, warming, and rich…..beefy goodness, with a good amount of spice as well.

I think it's rather surprising that I don't get stuff from Zgara every week, since it's not too far from home. Still, I do visit quite often and always get the same thing, the pork gyro.

The place seems to be doing some great business. Good for Eric and his Family! He opened during the middle of all the Covid restrictions and has done well!

Sue's Korean Kitchen:

Speaking of businesses that opened during the times of Covid. Think we were still in "red-tier" when Sue's opened in April of 2021.

The main dish I get here is the Kimchi Fried Rice with Spam (of course). It's still makes my preferred "under $14 for lunch" mark priced at $11.99. Though back in March it was $10.99.

Still, Sue's opens early at 10am, so I can get there before any lunch rush. For some reason, the woman there always remembers me?

I will say, that on my last visit, the portion size seemed to have shrunk a bit.

Still, this is enough food for me…… I like the fermented spice of the house made kimchi and of course the Spam. You know, the salty-savory-fermented kinda thing.

Speaking of fermenting….here's a photo of a take out meal that has been relegated to one of my folders for so long that it would be the photo equivalent of Suan Cai. So, while I'll delete all the detail photos, here's one of the entire meal. Can you figure out where it's from?

Yuk Dae Jang

The Missus and I had heard about a location of Yuk Dae Jang opening on Clairemont Mesa, next to the currently (strangely) closed Zen Curry.

Yuk Dae Jang is quite popular in our old neighborhood of Rowland Heights/City of Industry so we were quite interested to try things out. I'd heard that the place gets kinda crowded, so the Missus and I planned on early dinner at did 4-430pm dinners on both visits and I got there at 5pm on my solo weekday visit.

And the restaurant was fairly empty when we arrived. The place is fairly spartan with a flexible 12-15 tables total. No wonder the place can get packed! The young folks employed here work really hard and are quite nice as well. There are menus already placed on the tables when you are seated and you are asked if you want barley tea or water on arrival.

The Missus, in cruising thru all those social media sights already knew what She wanted so ordering was easy, it was to be the Premium Bossam (small size $21.99) and the Galbi Jjim, which kinda turned my head; it was 76.99!

Soon enough the panchan arrived.

A baechu kimchi didn't have much fermented flavor, but was quite refreshing and crisp, we enjoyed it. The Missus is not a fan of Eomuk Bokkeum, the fishcake panchan, which was quite routine. The Buchu Muchim, chive panchan was quite pungent, but had a good backbone of soy and mild sweetness.

Soon enough our Bossam arrived.

Along with the typical panchan and sauces; bean paste and shrimp sauce. I was surprised at the few slices of napa cabbage and also the gul bossam. I had never seen bossam like this. The pork belly was quite velvety, with a very nice soy sauce-savory-mildly sweet flavor. We watched a couple of other tables and eventually figured out and made "bossam in a spoon", laying the pork belly then topping with what we enjoyed….the mul kimchi, garlic slices, etc….

Soon enough the Galbi Jjim arrived. We had a couple of bowls of rice, of which we devoured one.

The really sweet young lady saw me taking photos of the bossam and asked if I wanted to take a photo before they "prepared" the dish for us. Soon enough, she went to work slicing things with shears and in the end it looked like this.

It was placed on a burner. So, here's the hint if you ever get this; mix things well as the dish can be overly sweet and the ingredients bland. There's a good amount of thick cut galbi in this….again, on the sweet side; the kabocha just adds to that. We obviously had quite a bit of leftovers. It's a very photogenic dish, but at nearly eighty bucks….well, we don't think it's worth the price.

The service was quite nice and of course I needed to make multiple visits before doing a post. I decided to return to get the baseline YukGaeJang. On this evening the Missus was working and things weren't too busy when I dropped in at around 5pm.

The panchan was the same as on the previous visit, though I detected that the baechu kimchi tasted a bit more fermented.

This time around I went with the purple rice, which was no big deal and on the mushy side.

As for the YukDaeJAng…..

YukDaeJang 12 YukDaeJang 13   The shredded beef was quite tasty. The broth had some nice spice, but was quite "flat" and one-dimensional in flavor. The glass noodles were too mushy. There was a rather greasy "mouth feel" to the dish and as a whole I felt it was quite mediocre.

Still, we had enjoyed the bossam so much that a return visit was in order. Plus, it was at that point in time when temperatures were rising in the county.

Things started off with the Premium Bossam in "Special Sauce" ($39.99).

This was basically the simmered pork belly in the sauce for Janggajji, the savory soy sauce based- mildly sweet-sour sauce used with pickled onions. I enjoyed the added onions and the favors with the pork belly. Granted, on this visit, some of the "rind" of the pork belly was on the tough side, but as a whole this was very tasty. It was bossam at a whole new level for San Diego.

We also got the Bi Bim Naegnmyun ($16.99).

While I appreciated the stretchy naegnmyun, the strands of beef were really chewy and the sauce was weak a watered down. This lacked the refreshing and bracing spice of the version we enjoy from Prime Grill. The flavor just tasted too diluted.

We also wanted to try the Mandu and the young lady who was our Server told us it would be no problem ordering a half pork and chive and kimchi and pork mandu ($11.99).

YukDaeJang 21  YukDaeJang 22 So, the wrappers were on the tough and brittle side. The filling for the pork and chive was bland and chewy, though the pork and kimchi had the advantage of some good savory-fermented flavor and was definitely the better of the two.

Our visits to Yuk Dae Jang left us at an impasse. We had enjoyed the bossam, which took the dish to a new level here in San Diego. We appreciated the service, which was efficient and attentive. But man can live on bossam alone….or can he? Time will tell. Let me know if you find a good "keeper" dish here at Yuk Dae Jang!

Crispy Chicken n’ Tomato (La Jolla/UTC)

Back in the comments of my "Rebuilding the Rotation" post FOY "Peter" mentioned that the La Jolla Village Square location of Padadak was being replaced by something called Crispy Chicken n' Tomato. Peter kindly included a link which indicated that the chain was the #1 Korean Fried Chicken Chain in Japan. Is that something to brag about? Hmmm…..sort of like saying Ajisen Ramen is the #1 Ramen Chain in China?

Anyway, a couple of weeks back, not sure on what to grab for lunch I decided to check the place out. I did the Google search and found that all the Padadak locations in San Diego, save the San Marcos location, though some would say that's not really San Diego had been replaced by Crispy Chicken.

The one good thing about this mall is that since the trolley stop was built there always seems to be ample parking. I arrived right at opening and sauntered on in.

The friendly young lady was an absolute joy. I placed my takeout order and was told there would be a 15 minute wait. The young lady mentioned putting in an online order, making sure I knew there wasn't any additional charges.

Of course, I couldn't help but notice the #1 Korean Fried Chicken Chain in Japan sign.

One quick note. Since when is Hiroshima in "China"? Last I heard, Hiroshima was in the Chūgoku region of Japan? Did I miss something in Geography class?

Anyway, I took a short walk and returned to pick up my order.

I had wanted to just see how the wings were without all the various sauces just to get my bearings, so I ordered the 8 piece wings Original ($14.50). A look at the fries had me thinking that they would not hold up well, even on the short trip back to the office, so I got the Onion Rings with Truffle Salt ($7).

I did a quick taste of the tomato topping which was super bland, you couldn't even really taste tomato. The version of Mul Kimchi provided was weird as it had a real strong anise/clove flavor that wasn't very pleasant.

As for the Onion Rings with Truffle Salt….well, the color was very dark…maybe black truffle salt??? Ahem, no, it was burnt, the breading bitter.

As for the wings; well, they did not hold up real well during the 10 minute trip back to the office. I found the batter to be thicker and the wings were fairly evenly coated… the pieces that weren't overly soggy were more crunchy than crisp, the seasoning also mild, apparently you do need some kind of sauce on this. The wings were on the larger side and were quite moist.

Looking over the website, I noticed that Crispy Chicken had lunch specials where you could order a bowl, yakisoba, bulgogi, or like I did the Chicken Plate, which comes with both the boneless chicken and chickens wings, corn slaw, veggie fried rice, and one of three choices of sauce for $14.50. So, I went with the Soy Honey I ordered online and my lunch was ready when I arrived.

Of course you know what what stated on the takeout box, right?

I gotta say, the price to portion ratio was quite good for these days of inflated prices.

Crispy Chicken n Tomato 10  Crispy Chicken n Tomato 11  The wings had held up better this time. I tried the sides first. The corn slaw was terrible, the "dressing" was really watery and this lacked flavor. Very little corn, you might as well just give me raw coleslaw mix.

The fried rice on the other hand was not bad. The rice was nicely coated, decent, simple, straightforward soy sauce flavors. It was my favorite item of the day.

The boneless chicken was served in fairly hefty chunks.

The sauce was not overly sweet, but I still would have preferred a bit more saltiness, this was much milder than the versions at other places. The chunks of chicken were on the dry and tough side.

The wings had held up much better this time and definitely did better with a sauce. Though the wings weren't evenly coated really paring down the impact of the already mild soy-honey. Perhaps I should have ordered the "Monster" sauce, after all, from my experience Japanese don't like super spicy food and you know…this is the #1 blah, blah, blah, blah……

In the end, this might be my least favorite of the four KFC chains in San Diego. Though I'm wondering what it would taste like in "Hiroshima, China"?

Revisits to Kim’s Deli and Sandwich Island Deli

It's funny how the mind works. I was getting some takeout from Sue’s Korean Kitchen, when suddenly I was wondering how Kim's Deli was doing.

So, a couple of days later at around 10am, I drove down Arjons Drive to see what was going on.

I parked in the cul-de-sac and walked on over to the little shop located in the business mall. The two older Korean women were hard at work putting together takeout orders when I arrived.

I thought about having a sandwich, but what reminded me of Kim's when visiting Sue's was the Bulgogi Bowl, which was pretty straightforward and simple, but was priced at reasonable $9 back in February 2021. It's now $12. Regardless, with prices these days, it still seems like a bargain. So that's what I got.

Kims Deli Rev 03  Kims Deli Rev 04  Calling this a "bowl" is a definite misnomer as it's pretty hefty. There's the standard green salad with a sesame dressing plus some fairly standard and kinda mushy and pretty salty japchae. The rice was nicely done and the portion size seemed a bit larger than before.

The bulgogi, was better this time, not as tough, though flavor wise, it was edging on the sweeter side. I saw the woman in the back actually cook the meat in what looked like a combo pizza oven – broiler. The sauce on the side tasted like bottled stuff and was super sweet in flavor.

Like I mentioned before, this really gave me old school "lunchwagon" vibes. It's not great, but considering the price at $12 and the portion size, in this day and age it's worth it. Plus, I actually had some leftovers….there was a ton of rice under the meat and japchae.

As I was having the bulgogi "bowl" my mind drifted off and thoughts of Sandwich Island Deli entered mi cabeza. Though it wasn't the sandwiches I was musing on; it was something else.

Which of course, had me driving down Trade Street a couple of days later to see what was going on.

Again, it was just past 10am and the place seemed pretty quiet.

What you don't see is the Asian couple working like crazy putting together orders. By the time the woman saw me and came over to take my order there were six packages on the counter!

As for what I ordered, well, like Kim's I was going to have a sandwich on another day. The "bento box" which is what I had on my previous visit had gone up a mere 75 cents in nearly 2 1/2 years! 

Something else caught my eye. There's Chicken Yakisoba on the menu. And it's priced at only $7.95. I was wondering what the heck a $7.95 dish would look like here? All sandwiches, save one (the Egg Salad Sandwich – $6.99), are more expensive than the yakisoba. Heck, most everything at Nijiya is now more expensive than that! So, I had to try it.

That bag felt pretty heavy. I opened it up and cracked up.

This looked like something I'd throw together when I was 12 years old, trying to make use of dry, packaged ramen noodles.

And actually, there was more sautéed cabbage, than noodles. Or anything else for that matter. And it was quite bland in terms of soy-savory-sweet tones.

There were a few pieces of chicken, mushrooms, and zucchini. The seasoning was very mild and also tasted like it was poured from a bottle or gallon container. Perhaps I should have followed the lead of the guy who came to pick up his yakisoba….I'm guessing he's a regular because the woman gave him two containers of sauce for his order.

Truth be told; the teriyaki-ish chicken bento is better than this. Though it's hard to complain about something that costs $7.95. Heck, remember I got a second-rate Banh Mi for $9 recently? And I got my daily requirement of cabbage with this meal to boot.

Rebuilding the Rotation – The Market at HFS, Sue’s Korean Kitchen, Bay Park Coffee, and Zgara Greek Grill

I'm not sure you've noticed, but we've gone on quite few trips since December, one of which was a month long! I know, we here all about "revenge travel" these days. Well, I'm not sure that's what it is for us. We're all getting older and for…at least me, I'm thinking better revenge travel now than to have wait longer and let it become "Depends" travel if you know what I mean.  With all of those trips; it's been pretty difficult getting "back in the rhythm" of things like developing that rotation.

But it looks like things are straightening out and I'm ever slowly falling back into a routine. So here are a couple of places, most should be quite familiar to regular readers, I'll just leave it as a C(learing) O(ut the) M(emory) C(ard) post with a minimum of verbiage.

The Market at HFS:

It seems that the warmer the weather gets, the more I visit.

There had been a gap of over five months since I've restarted my visits and I no longer know the folks working here. The selection is smaller these days; at least on my two recent visits, though those didn't take place during what I recall were the peak days.

I basically stick with the ahi poke here and it still hits the spot. As things heat up and the Missus starts wanting poke, I'm sure I'll be visiting even more often.

Sue's Korean Kitchen:

The folks in the office really like Sue's, so it's been a fairly regular stop for me. Plus, they open at 10am which helps me to beat lunch time crowds.

In my neck of the woods; well, there's not much. But here're two places that I hit up regularly.

Bay Park Coffee:

I usually meet our good friend "Alle" who was Frankie's favorite Auntie for coffee and to catch up on things once a week or so.

And though they've had some staffing turnover over the last year or so, the folks working are quite nice. We usually catch up on things over a cold brew and veggie bagels.

Zgara Greek Grill:

After my last revisit to GyroGrill, I headed straight back to Zgara. I hadn't been in a while and business there seems to have really picked up.

So, of course I'm now back in the habit of visiting as often as I can and it's still the pork gyros here for me. It's always great to chat with Eric, who remembers me from the days when Zgara was in PB.

Prime Grill (Cathy’s revisit)

Thanks for stopping by to read mmm-yoso!!! today.  Cathy is writing while Kirk is 'researching'.

The first time I went to Prime Grill was in 2016 and it was with Kirk and Ed (from Yuma) who had this perspective of the visit.FB6A675D-8ACD-4EFB-AD23-C5C082AD2FBA The Mister and I returned the other day and were going to order from the regular menu, but the All Day Special  Menu, which was All You Can Eat for $27 per person would cost about the same.  We decided it would be fun to cook our own and eat all we could.

Steamed egg is always a nice side dish from any Korean restaurant.  We could have ordered two, but managed to restrain ourselves.

18606158-0718-4FBA-96CC-0B2D36BB365D A clean grill had been brought out, so there was no flavor imparted from the bulgogi and BBQ sauces and we instead ate the meat with the pickled sides (the kim chee is excellent) and rice on top of salad: a completely different second meal.

A Revisit to Sue’s Korean Kitchen

Recently, my coworker "Richard" actually came into the office! I hadn't seen him in ages it seems and so I thought it would be nice to pick up some lunch. I gave him a couple of choices and he picked Sue's Korean Kitchen since he'd never had the food from there. I like getting to Sue's early; they open at 10 to avoid waits and crowds. He left it to me to do the ordering.

I arrived right after the place opened. The woman working waved at me and said "I haven't seen you in a long time, maybe almost a year!" Checking back, I hadn't visited Sue's in almost a year, she was right! Wow, what a memory!

Richard left it up to me to choose. I always get the Kimchi Fried Rice here, so I went and placed two orders. Richard is younger and is still a "growing boy" whereas my growth is more directed toward girth these days. So I knew he'd need more than Kimchi Fried Rice. So, I also ordered the bulgogi ($15). I did notice that the Kimchi Fried Rice has gone up a dollar to $10.99 since my last visit almost a year ago, which considering how other prices have risen didn't seem to bad to me.

I get mine with Spam (of course) which adds a nice salty component to this fairly spicy version of KFR. The house made kimchi has a nice slightly fermented flavor and it seemed more intensely flavored then I recall. Richard loved this.

As for the Bulgogi. Well, I do like the panchan made inhouse….I've seen older Korean folks coming in to buy it in bulk from the fridge here.

Sues Rev 05  Sues Rev 06  The Bulgogi was quite tender, perhaps a shade sweeter than I prefer, but not bad at all. Richard enjoyed this as well, telling me that this was better than what had recently had at a Korean place on Convoy! Go figure.

Since we had KFR, I took the white rice home along with some of the panchan, which the Missus gobbled up. Looks like I need to drop by and get some one of these days.

It was great having Richard in the office. Say what you will about the joys of remote work and perhaps I'm just an old fuddy-duddy, but I miss the social and collaborative spirit of working together in the same area. Sues Rev 08

Sue's really reminds me of the Korean BBQ places "back home" like Gina's, there's something soulful about these places. And just think, Sue's opened in spring of 2021, in the middle of the pandemic and they've survived! Maybe one day we'll learn their story.

For now….well, I think I'll need another kimchi fried rice fix soon!
