Circling Back to Kindred

Our visit to Kali's Garden Cafe had us wondering how Kindred was doing. It had been almost four years since we visited, which was during the pandemic. As a plus, we knew they had outdoor seating so we went just after the 5pm opening time during the week and got seated along the counter on Beech.

Kindred Rev 01

As always, the service was friendly, though things got a bit tight as the clock ticked along.

Kindred Rev 02

We placed our order and I decided on a cocktail. I asked for something smoky and not too sweet and the "Akuma no Uta" was recommended. I should have known that something titled "The Devil's Song" would be pretty darn stiff.

Kindred Rev 04a

Kindred Rev 04

This was no joke as it made its way down my throat. I actually enjoyed it, but one of these was more than enough!

Our food soon started arriving. Starting with the "Doom Bloom"; basically tempura mushrooms.

Kindred Rev 03

So crisp and light; the earth and almost sweet Shimeji, the savory Oyster, and the meaty Trumpet Mushrooms were really tasty. We both thought the watery-mayonnaisey yuzu  sauce was a bit too mild and the mushrooms could have used more salt. But overall, a very nice dish.

I really like Yuba, so of course we got the BBQ Yuba Skewers.

Kindred Rev 05

Grilled in this manner, the yuba attains and interesting crisp, yet chewy texture. The BBQ sauce was interesting, perhaps a bit too sweet, but the pungent hot mustard really cleared our sinuses in a very enjoyable way.

The Chimichurri Seitan has always been a favorite. And it seems they've made it even better.

Kindred Rev 07

The gluten was crisp on the exterior, yet slightly creamy inside. It just went well with the spicy Harissa like sauce and the mild horseradish sauce. This is indeed Satan's Seitan….so good it's evil!

The last item was the "Charred Remains" – charred broccoli.

Kindred Rev 08

The broccoli crowns were nicely charred, the stems a bit too hard. The ricotta cheese really seemed to clash with the spicy chili oil. This was pretty sizeable portion.

Overall, we really enjoyed our meal at Kindred. And even though they won't convert me to "Vegan-ism", they just put out tasty food, and I feel better for eating it. Service was friendly as usual. We'll be sure to not let 4 years go by before revisiting!

Kali’s Garden Cafe (Julian)

Back at the end of March, we decided to take JJ up to Julian. I know it might sound strange, but we hadn't been back to Julian since like 2003-2004…over 20 years ago!

And upon parking, we were instantly thrust into the charming old west-mining town. Several businesses were dog friendly and the Missus enjoyed doing some shopping. First at the fun, tourist kitschy, old Americana wielding, Old Julian Garage.

We also enjoyed The Olde Goat.

Where we ended up getting some freeze-dried goat milk and freeze-dried goat milk ice cream for JJ.

Julian Olde Goat 03

It's too bad The Olde Goat doesn't include these for mail order, because JJ really enjoyed them.

And JJ waited while Momma went and did some pie shopping…..

Julian JJ 01

Though in the end, the Missus decided to go without. She'd never taken to the pies from Julian.

We then had to find a place for an early lunch. We settled on a place with outdoor seating close to where we parked that served Vegan style cuisine named Kali's Garden Cafe.

Kalis Garden 01

The Missus went in and ordered while I hung out with JJ in the patio. After ordering, we just enjoyed the clean, crisp air…..it had been snowing as recently as the week before, but we didn't come across traces during our visit and drive.

Soon enough, the friendly, cheerful young lady brought over our food.

The Missus got the Avocado Toast.

Kalis Garden 02

The bread was nice and crisp-yeasty. A decent sourdough. The avocado was a thin layer of mashed with a sprinkling of a smoky-spicy powder. The bread was the best part of the dish.

The Missus ordered me a jackfruit burger.

Kalis Garden 04

Like the avocado toast, it was the bread; in this case a brioche like bun that had been nicely toasted that was the best part of the dish. The jackfruit "burger" had a mushy texture, and I really couldn't make out much in terms of flavor as it was slatered in a very sweet BBQ sauce and there was a lot of Thousand Island like dressing poured over it.

All in all, an ok meal. We'll explore other options in the area the next time we visit.

JJ did have a fun time exploring Julian.

As a postscript…..I'm sure most of you know. But three weeks after our visit a 5.2 magnitude earthquake with an epicenter outside of Julian occurred.

I'm relieved to note that even thought there was some minor damage, that there were no fatalities. As for me; I was driving east on the 52 when my phone went off. I didn't notice a thing. I guess this is a good warning for us to be ready…..

Ramen by Request – The Vegan Soy Ramen from Nishiki (Mira Mesa) and the “Crazy Garlic” Ramen from Buta Ramen (Linda Vista)

One of the reasons that I've kept on blogging all these years are the great "FOYs" and the wonderful comments, emails, questions, and recommendations I receive. There's just no way this blog would have existed for nearly 20 years without all of you. Yes, it's a large part a "food/travel diary", but the interactions are what keep me motivated to continue. And in spite of sometimes taking a while; I do try to check out places that are mentioned in your comments. I try not to forget these. And here are two visits that would never have happened without those comments.

The "Crazy Garlic" Ramen from Buta Ramen:

In my last post on Santouka and HiroNori, FOYs ST and Franklin mentioned the "Crazy Garlic" ramen from Buta Ramen. After my visits; I've considered Buta to be a "second tier" shop. They have catchy names for the fusiony ramen; like "Soul You" for shoyu or "Tahini Old School" for tonkotsu. I'm probably not the target audience for their ramen. But what the heck; it had been over 5 years since my initial visits; so I guess I needed to see if this "crazy old school" would feel like a Buta?

Buta Garlic 01

I as happy to find parking on this day. This parking lot on Linda Vista Road as almost attained the same notoriety as those along Convoy and some of those along University in City Heights.

Buta Garlic 01c

The nice gentleman working pointed me to a table and handed me a menu.  I took note of this on the menu.

Buta Garlic 02

And I went ahead and ordered the Crazy Garlic Ramen. Which arrived in just a few minutes!

Buta Garlic 04  Buta Garlic 05 First thing I noticed was how foamy the broth was, like it was kept at a rolling boil instead of a simmer. It was also on the thin side and seemed more like a thickened, slightly bitter, shoyu based broth. Like the tonkotsu I had here before, it also had a slight "metallic" tinge to it.

As for the garlic "chips"? Well, I expected something crisp, not bitter, hard, and plastic like, which this was. It was not fun eating those!

Buta Garlic 06a  Buta Garlic 07  The chashu was a bit on the chewy side and lightly flavored, but not bad. The noodles were actually cooked decently and had a nice "springy pull" to them.

As a whole not my favorite bowl of ramen, but I'm glad I tried it.

Buta Garlic 08

I'm probably just not into these hipster type of ramen?

So, ST and Franklin, I know you mentioned that it was your coworkers who loved this. It's been a couple of months since you both commented and I'm wondering if you've managed to try this and if so, what did you think?

The Vegan Soy Ramen from Nishiki (Mira Mesa):

Way back in November of 2023, in the comments of the post on the Veggie King Ramen at Nagi, FOY DavidG commented:

"As for the veggie ramen, this is the 2nd best I have had in SD. the Nishiki veggie ramen is so good, I don't understand how the broth is vegetarian. better than anywhere else i have ever tried. i'm curious what a meat eater like yourself would think of Nishiki's veggie ramen?"

Yes, I know it took long enough, but I finally decided to try the veggie ramen at Nishiki out. It's a good thing that I checked the menus online as I was headed to the Kearny Mesa location, which does not serve the "Vegan Delight"! I immediately changed plans and headed on over to the Mira Mesa location, which I hadn't been to before.

Nishiki Vegan 01

Wow, I remember when this was Spicy Hut!

I was greeted as I entered and said I was fine with a counter seat.

Nishiki Vegan 03

The nice young lady handed me a menu, but I told her I already knew what I wanted and ordered the "Vegan Soy Karaage Delight"

Nishiki Vegan 02

I rather enjoyed sitting at the counter as I could watch the kitchen in action. Those folks were working hard.

Nishiki Vegan 04

My ramen took a while; but I enjoyed watching the action.

Nishiki Vegan 05  Nishiki Vegan 06 The pseudo tonkotsu bowl arrived seaming hot. There were some…well, interesting things about this bowl. My least favorite was the "impossible chicken karaage". It seemed to be sort of soybean based; but the texture was not to my liking; it was spongy and super chewy…think thick nylon sponge and had no flavor.

The eggless noodles were perfectly cooked, I really didn't miss the eggs….probably the best prepared I've had at Nishiki, so no qualms with that.

Nishiki Vegan 07  Nishiki Vegan 08  Not quite sure what to do with the slice of tomato? How much acidity, sweetness, will one slice of tomato provide for a bowl of ramen? The cabbage added a slight sweet-bitterness and was blanched. The corn also added some nice textural contrast and sweetness to the bowl.

As for the broth, it was mildly savory tones, and decent saltiness; not bad at all. I did miss the umami forward tones and while there were many "dots of oil", you can see it was on the thin side. I missed the tongue coating richness of a decent tonkotsu broth.

Nishiki Vegan 09

In the end, I think I prefer the Veggie King Ramen from Nagi. Though this wasn't bad at all and the staff here were really nice. In fact, to be perfectly honest, I preferred this to the Garlic Ramen at Buga, which I think says a lot.

Montpellier – Green Lab and Place de Peyrou

When planning our most recent trip to France, we knew we'd be spending our final two weeks in Paris, but where to go before then? The Missus wanted to visit places She had never been before and Brittany, Normandy, and the Loire was high on Her list. But I just didn't think visiting those locales at the end of November, beginning of December would be the best time. Nice and Marseille was high on that list, but in the end we thought visiting Carcassonne would be interesting and I'd always wanted to visit Toulouse, but we needed one more "leg" of the trip. We'd already been to the main cities in Provence….those posts never got done because like I mentioned in this post; after Israel, Palestine, and Jordan, we spent a night in Paris before heading to Provence, we planned 5 nights there, but got stranded because of a rail strike and ended up flying from Marseille to CDG and staying at the airport. This was at the end of 2019. So, while I started doing posts on that trip….well, you know what happened, right? Those posts on Provence never got done. Maybe one day I'll just to a COMC thing. Anyway, while I love train travel, the Missus has a "no more than 4 – 4 1/2 hour" rule when it comes to travelling by rail, which is why I have to plan on stays in places like Stuttgart, which is perfectly fine with me as I get to explore. After doing a bit of research, I developed an interest in Montpellier. Now you really won't find much about Montpellier in those guidebooks, but the city looked interesting; from the meandering old town, to having one of the oldest Universities in the world. And I'd read that fully one-fourth of the city's population is composed of students! That contrast would make for quite an interesting visit!

In fact, we could see the contrasts from the time we arrived. The apartment we were staying in was a mere ten minute walk from the train station. We went thru a tunnel that connected the tram line to quite a modern area with a mall. The apartment was in the interesting looking building connected to the Ibis Hotel.

IMG_3173

We had a very nice view of the city.

IMG_2946

Just steps away to the east was a large shopping mall named Le Polygone. Just to the west is the main square of the city, Place de la Comédie. This lively and lovely square features restaurants, fast food joints ("McDo" does great business with the students), cafe's, a movie theatre, and the lovely National Opera. Because we didn't have a map of the city, we stopped by the Tourist Information center and got the "detailed" map (,50 €) which we used along with Google Maps to get around.

IMG_3030
IMG_3030

At the heart of the square is the Fountain of the Three Graces.

IMG_3032

The square is nicknamed L'Oeuf ("egg") because of its oval shape. From here there are arteries heading in all directions. We decided to take one of the side streets, away from the Ecusson (the old city), down Rue de Verdun for a light lunch at a place I had on my list; Green Lab.

IMG_2950

Because of the large student population, I thought that there would be some nice casual eateries with diverse cuisines and with just one notable "fail", these places delivered. Green Lab features Lebanese and Middle Eastern influenced vegetarian and vegan dishes in a "fast-casual" type set-up. You order at the counter and they'll bring out your food to you. The plates looked pretty large so we just ordered the Falafel and Hummus (9,99 €) which ended up being enough for the both of us.

IMG_2947 IMG_2949 While we didn't care much for the pita, which was too dense, hard, and "bready" for us, we thought the falafel were quite good. Crisp outside, mildy creamy interior, nice nutty herbaceousness, this was actually better than what we'd had at L'As du Fallafel in Paris! The hummus was quite rustic, the nutty – savory tones came thru quite well.

This was actually better than we expected and enough to hold us until our Michelin Starred dinner.

Green Lab Comédie
12 Rue de Verdun
34000 Montpellier, France

We headed back to the square and decided to do some exploring. We headed up Rue de la Loge, one of the main shopping/downtown streets in Montpellier. We had arrived on a Saturday and I had thought that things might be a bit crazy….but we found that Montpellier had a relaxed, fun, community loving vibe to it. We got a kick out of this band with an interesting "cast" of characters playing on Place Jean Jaurès.

IMG_2952

And as we headed further up the street, the Missus quickly noticed these tags on the ground.

IMG_2953

Well, I didn't know that Montpellier is on the Camino de Santiago!

We enjoyed wandering up the streets of the Ecusson.

IMG_2954

And we arrived at this.

IMG_2955

Yep, Montpellier has it's version of the Arc de Triomphe, the Porte du Peyrou which was completed in 1693 and is actually modeled after Porte Saint-Denis, which I mentioned in this post. Right past the Porte is Place Royale de Peyrou.

Which has a striking Water Tower designed to look like a Greek Monument.

IMG_2957

Which actually used to store water!

IMG_2961

With an aqueduct.

IMG_2958

That used to route water to the cistern in the tower.

There are gardens and a promenade.

IMG_2965

And on this day it looked like a large meeting of motorcycle clubs was going on.

IMG_2960

As we walked back toward the Arc we heard chanting and drums…….it was a protest.

IMG_2966

IMG_2967

Which made its way into Place de Peyrou.

IMG_2968

It was interesting, anti hate protest meets biker clubs…….with no incidents. You gotta love it!

IMG_2969
IMG_2969

On a lively Saturday in Montpellier.

IMG_2970

On the way back to the apartment, we started taking notice of the public art along the side streets.

IMG_2976
IMG_2976

Along with churches and other grand structures down alleyways and side streets. This is the Église Saint-Roch.

IMG_2980

Montpellier was turning out to be quite an interesting stop.

Jerusalem (Before Covid) – Dinner at Pergamon

After returning from our tour of Bethlehem, we relaxed and I took a short nap. Before you knew it the sun had set and Shabbat was over. I hadn't made any reservations for dinner on this night. After having the wonderful vegetables during our Shabbat dinner at Mamilla Rooftop; I thought we'd try our luck at a place known for their vegetarian Mediterranean cuisine named Pergamon. So we headed out to see if we could get a table.

IMG_3967

We headed down Shamai Street, then crossed Jaffa Street and found the restaurant. And guess what? They had just opened and there were no customers, so we easily got a table!

IMG_3971

I started with a "cold one" and the Missus had a glass of wine while we perused the menu.

IMG_3974

IMG_3969 - Pergamon

We started with the Beets with Pistachios. Man, this was good!

IMG_3976

The perfectly roasted beets were tender and sweet; the salty-savory-milkiness of the Manchego cheese really balanced the dish out.

The Eggplant was nicely roasted, tender and smoky.

IMG_3977

Of course the nutty and slightly bitter tahini is the perfect foil for the eggplant.  The pseudo Tabouli and the peanuts finished off the dish nicely.

The Missus loved the Roasted Butternut Squash and Lentils.

IMG_3981

I thought the curried tahini and chilies was a really nice addition to the dish.

They key to the dishes for us here was that the sauces and additions really complemented the main focus of each dish without overwhelming the key element. We were really enjoying the vegetables in Jerusalem.

It was still pretty early when we finished up dinner; so we decided to walk on over to the Old City.

IMG_3982_02

IMG_3985

IMG_3986

Entering thru the Jaffa Gate we wandered around David Street……

IMG_3987

It was quite interesting as we'd pass something we totally expected…..

IMG_3988

And then come across something…well totally unexpected in Jerusalem…..

IMG_3990

Roll Tide????

After wandering around a bit more, we ended up at the Damascus Gate.

IMG_3993

And decided to head back to the apartment.

IMG_4008

I went and picked up a couple of bottles of beer on the way back to the apartment and enjoyed a beer while sitting on the balcony.

IMG_4011

As I watched the street below, I still was amazed that I was here; having a beer on a porch…..in Jerusalem.

IMG_9445

Thanks for stopping by!

Kindred

And so it came to pass. A couple of weeks after driving past Kindred and seeing the place really busy on a Thursday, the Missus wanted to give it another try. Kindred Rev 01 Granted, it was early in the week; one of the benefits of getting into work super early is that on occasion, I can get home rather early. And this was one of those days. We decided to head on down to South Park and see what was going on. We got to South Park at just around 4pm and went and took a walk, returning right when Kindred opened. It was pretty quiet when we arrived and we requested and got our favorite seats….on the outside corner.

And guess what? Our favorite Server Tracy was working and she remembered us! I guess it's because we always like to sit in the same area. It had been a rough year-and-a-half and it was good to see a familiar smiling face.

We started with some cocktails.

The Missus had the "Octave Museum" which featured Bourbon, Sherry, red wine(???), and green apple.

Kindred Rev 03

Which She enjoyed.

I got the "Twist of Faith"…I described my taste to Tracy…smokey, not too sweet, etc……and they did a great job creating me a custom cocktail.

Kindred Rev 02

As for the food….well, sadly, they still don't have their "secret menu" item, so I'm not able to get the "Dip".

We started with "Fried and Pickled" ($10).

Kindred Rev 04

We both loved the fried pickles, not overly sour, a hint of sweet, perfectly crunchy…..it didn't even need the "ranch dressing". The cauliflower was crisp, but way to sour for me….the Missus enjoyed it though.

We always get the "Skewers" ($10).

Kindred Rev 05

And while seiten will never make me turn my back on my carnivorous ways, the texture is fine, and man do we love the layers of flavors from the mildly spicy – earthy harissa, the garlicky chimichurri, and the pungent-punchy horseradish sauce.

I decided to try the "Grill Cheese" ($9).

Kindred Rev 06 Kindred Rev 07

I don't think we'll be ordering this again….the tapioca mozzarella was really weak in flavor and other than a bit of gooeyness didn't add anything to the sandwich, which seemed a bit too greasy for me. Wish it had a bit more kale and the bechamel just put this over-the-top in terms of rich-greasy textures.

I decided on a La Fin du Monde for "dessert"……man, it's been a while since I've had one…..it hit the spot. We had an enjoyable meal with the friendly Tracy waiting on us. It almost felt normal……

A Takeout Revisit to Greenhaus Vegetarian Eatery

**** Greenhaus has closed

Ever since I had the Missus have a taste of the chickpea and garbanzo “Happy Belly Plate” from Greenhaus, She’s been hooked. Greenhaus Rev 00 We get takeout every couple of weeks for the Missus to either have for lunch (when I’m too tired to make lunch for Her) or to eat at home when I’m not around to cook.

The Missus claims the chickpeas from Greenhaus is way better than what I make from home and I’m willing to agree; if it means I can retire from cooking and prepping garbanzos at home.

The Happy Belly Plate is basically a “protein” (the Spiced Chickpeas in this case), a “sauce” (the Lentils), and two sides….we get Basmati Rice and Naan. All for $12.

Greenhaus Rev 01 Greenhaus Rev 02 It is quite a bit of food as you can see. I’ll sometimes supplement the order with a side of the Masala ($4) which I’ll have with the naan.

This would be basically two meals for the Missus…or if I’m having the naan with the Masala sauce and perhaps something else like roasted cauliflower/potatoes it will feed the both of us, with enough for another meal for the Missus.

She enjoys the creamy chickpeas, the tender lentils, and it’s just salty enough for Her to enjoy.

Greenhaus Rev 03

I’ve tried other items here as you can read from my previous post as well as the Naan Wrap with Spicy Tofu and Masala Sauce ($9.75).

Greenhaus 11 Greenhaus 12 In this case, I wasn’t a big fan of mushy tofu and the naan was a bit too hard and crisp for a wrap in my opinion. A bit too much bread and veg to protein for me as well.

So, we’ll just stick to what the Missus enjoys.

The owner is a really nice guy, ordering online from the Greenhaus website is easy, and there are no extra charges. So, I’m more than happy to support another locally owned business and it keeps the Missus happy. Which is very, very, important!

Greenhaus 13

Things sure are changing in the Morena corridor. With the trolley coming in and new development….I understand that the car dealerships have lost their lease and will be slowly moving out…..it’ll be interesting to see what happens to the area over the next 4-5 years.

Takeout from Greenhaus Vegetarian Eatery

Greenhaus 01**** Greenhaus has closed

Back in August while driving down Morena Boulevard, I noticed that the longtime Chinese Fast-Food place, Wok In Express was gone and being replaced by, gosh, of all things a vegetarian restaurant! The first thing that went through my mind was “wow, boy has Morena changed since we moved to San Diego”!

Nestled between JV’s Taco Shop, the Donut Shop, and Waters Fine Foods in the cramped parking lot, I made a mental note of the place.

Greenhaus 02Then, returning from picking up lunch from another place on Linda Vista (yes ST, I’ll get that post done soon), I noticed that Greenhaus had opened.

A week or so later, I decided to drop by at around eleven, before that tiny parking lot gets crazy.

The interior of the restaurant had been emptied with two small “two tops” set-up outside….the Covid thing, you know.

With a name like Greenhaus, other than being vegetarian….cause the sign said so; I wasn’t sure what kind of cuisine was being served.

A quick look at the menu and menu card straightened things out quickly.

Greenhaus 03

This was one of those “fast-casual” concepts, basically Indian….where you pick sauces, proteins, and a “style”……whether a wrap, salad, plate…..or even tacos(???). There’s even a “snack” menu with samosas and such. The owner, whose name, please forgive me if I misspell it; is Gubi was so friendly and helpful. I wanted to figure out what the best combination of Sauce and Protein was for a plate. I was thinking Spiced Chickpeas and a Lentil Curry sauce. Gubi said that would be a good combination. I went with a carb two-fer; getting the garlic naan and basmati rice as my sides for the plate ($12). Gubi also said he put in a sample of the Masala sauce for me to try. I was shocked when I opened my bag…..man, this was a lot of food!

Greenhaus 04b Greenhaus 05Geez Louise, look at all that rice and all that naan? The basmati rice was perfect in texture and mildly fragrant. The lentil sauce, was basically a milder, lighter, sauce version of green lentil daal. It wasn’t super rich, had a nice nuttiness, a decent sauce. The chickpeas were nicely done, I believe they use dried chickpeas, because these weren’t overly salty, nor were they mushy. It had a really nice exterior firmness that gave way to a pleasant creaminess. Again mild and not overly seasoned, but not bad. I saved half of this for the Missus who loved it and wiped it all out. So, I guess Greenhaus has a fan.

Greenhaus 06b Greenhaus 07There was a generous portion of garlic naan provided. It was a bit thinner and less doughy than what I’m used to; but it went well with the tangy masala sauce. Again, this was a lighter, more tangy-acidic version of masala, without all the thick buttery-creamy textures and not very spicy, nor overly seasoned, which worked fine here.

Overall, I hesitate to call it Indian food, let’s just stick with “Indian inspired”….a bit lighter, fast-casual in concept. While most of these type of places aren’t my kind of thing, we were pleasantly surprised with our meal. It’s also quite a good value as well.

I decided to return a week or so later. I wanted to try the “Veggie Meatballs” especially since they were made with garbanzos (chickpeas), knowing I’d have leftovers for the Missus who loves garbazos (see above). I asked Gubi what sauce to get and he recommended the Masala. So I got the Veggie Meatballs with Masala sauce, basmati rice, and a salad.

Greenhaus 08 Greenhaus 09Again, quite a bit of food. The “meatballs” were very much a milder version chickpea kofta; though it was a bit on the dry and bland side for our taste. The masala this time was less tangy; though much thicker and richer….frankly, I preferred the previous version.

The salad was fresh, the greens sparkling, though the vinaigrette was quite routine and bland.

Greenhaus 10

So, I think we’ll stick with the spiced chickpeas….especially if the Missus has a say in things. Greenhaus 13

Overall, while I’m not a big fan of most fast-casual “concepts”……because frankly, most places just seem to quit at the “concept”, with mainly revenue in mind, and let the cards (food) fall where they may. And honestly, I think most folks may have their favorite combinations at these fast-casual places…heck we still order one thing from “Da Poodle” a couple of times a year. I’d say that Greenhaus makes a good quality product and while the flavors may seem on the mild side; I don’t think it’s bland at all. A big plus is the owner, who is very friendly and helpful. This is more fusion than “con-fusion” and I can live with that. After all; someone’s going to have to get the Missus Her chickpeas, right?

Sunday Stuffs, the “Works in Progress” Edition – CoCo Ichibanya, Da Nang Corner, and Greenhaus Vegetarian Eatery, (hopefully) Coming Soon

Boy, this past week has been some kind of humid, huh? I'm just going to do a short post today of places that look like are current works in progress.

CoCo Ichibanya:

Last I heard, CoCo Ichibanya was supposed to open during this summer. Well, it's near the end of August. So, during one of my shopping trips to Nijiya, I decided to see what was going on.

IMG_6666

Well, doesn't look like much yet. So perhaps it might not be ready for prime time this month? Or perhaps they are using my "endless March 2020" calendar…which would still make it March……176th!

I guess it's a bit too hot for curry right now anyway, right?

4428 Convoy St.
San Diego, CA 92111

Meanwhile, right next to CoCo Ichibanya was a place I hadn't noticed.

The restaurant's Facebook Page mentions that the restaurant is taking a bit longer than expected to build out. I'm hoping we get some good Mi Quang?

I'm kinda excited about this place.

The Missus and I were taking a little drive around the 'hood, when I noticed that the long time Chinese Fast Food shop Wok in Express next to JV's and Waters was gone and is going to be……yep, a Vegetarian Shop! You gotta say…. Morena sure is changing, ain't it?

Now, if we only get a bakery selling really got croissants!

Covid-19 Takeout – Kindred

C-19 Kindred 01 C-19 Kindred 02In my post on Et Voila during the time of Covid-19 "FOY" Lynnea (we love you Lynnea) mentioned that Kindred was doing takeout during this time. I was actually keeping track of what was being offered with what was called the "Greatest Hits" menu.

The other thing was that the cocktails that we wanted were being sold in portions of six (!!!!)……I mean, I had read that alcohol sales in San Francisco had increaed by 42 percent during the first month of Covid-19! I waited until there was something offered that we had enjoyed during our visits to the restaurant before making the special trip out of the way.

Finally, I saw that the "skewers" were on the menu…..and I had an excuse for heading out of the way……

C-19 Kindred 03 C-19 Kindred 04Which I ordered ($10) along with the Golden Axe ($45). Ordering was easy, on the phone, as was pick-up……I simply walked up to the table to the right of the door and grabbed the packages with my name on it.

The Missus went thru the skewers like a hot knife cutting thru butter.

As for the cocktails, it was provided in a really nice bottle.

I went ahead an measured out, and indeed it was a solid 6 portions of 2/3 a cup for each.

So, shaked with ice. it made a solid cocktail……for three days!

So, perhaps if Kindred offered "the dip", we may do this again…..but man, six cocktails….man, that's a bit more than we wanted.

Though I will say the Missus really enjoyed those Seitan Skewers.

And the Golden Axe….well, was the Golden Axe.
