HMart and eating in the store (Mira Mesa location)

mmm-yoso!!! continues to be written by Cathy while Kirk and His Missus catch up from another wonderful vacation.

The Mister and I first discovered a Super HMart in 2012, actually on the same day that the first HMart opened in San Diego.  In 2013, I wrote a post about a meal enjoyed there, then in 2019 I wrote another post about more selections we've enjoyed before shopping in the store.  Post Covid-19, things have returned to 'normal' and today's post about the Mira Mesa location and its tiny food court area is to keep you updated.
72A80D16-4D54-4F75-9E0D-8999F14781E5 If you walk in the entrance on the right, you'll be at the proper area.
72A80D16-4D54-4F75-9E0D-8999F14781E5 If you had walked in the entrance to the left and counter-clockwise through the store, you'll see this overhead signage.
72A80D16-4D54-4F75-9E0D-8999F14781E5 Grab a container and choose from the hot/steam trays

6F9D82A5-FA98-4059-961A-4EEFA4532243 as well as from the chilled trays.  At the end of the line are canned and bottled beverages and the cash register and seating area.  Everything is $10.99/lb. {there is also a water fountain with cups in the seating area}

9DA7E377-55DD-41AB-9B51-F5137451A4999DA7E377-55DD-41AB-9B51-F5137451A499 The fried items seem to be fresh when we are here; lightly crisp and not greasy.  The squid and whole shrimp are a favorite (as you can see from these separate visits).  The chilled trays always hold something wonderful.  Each of these packed full trays weighed a little less than one pound.DE85A05F-7B90-40EE-938D-C3E891F0D454 You can also order something from the kitchen- the menu board is right above the trays.634634AD-D628-48FE-8E44-E17DA64403AB The Bibimbap (mixed rice with meat and vegetables) has been a special taped to the bottom of the menu board for a while now ($9.99).  Steamed rice topped with a variety of vegetables and marinated tender, thin sliced beef (you can also get the beef in the per-pound steam tray) topped with an egg.  It's served with pickled radish, Kimchi and the mildly spicy, slightly sweet gochujang sauce.  A spoon is necessary for mixing the ingredients together.  You can have all of this served in a stone pot (dolsot bibimbap) so the rice is sizzling and brown/burned (in a good way) for $2 more (#10 on the photo menu).
634634AD-D628-48FE-8E44-E17DA64403AB#20 on the menu is 'pork cutlet' ($11.99).  Topped with teriyaki sauce and served with rice and salad, this is quite a large meal.  We were sad that on this visit, the pork was fried just about 30 seconds too long, leaving it a bit dryer and more chewy than usual.

Once we finish our meal, we shop.

Holey Donuts (El Cajon)

Thanks for stopping to read this food blog, mmm-yoso!!! Kirk and His Missus are winding down their vacation while Cathy remains writing another post about a local place.

In the corner of the strip mall anchored by Boot Barn and Turners Outdoorsman Shop as well as Ami Sushi, one block East of Parkway Plaza, this nondescript signage popped up in April of 2020. 85E7DC0C-C700-434A-8761-A790A6AA119B
9F84EB29-95B2-4993-81D8-0CE6E686E02A Depending on the time of day, the shelves may be filled with fresh donuts or not.
BBE6C659-98DD-4E73-87BF-A856BF38F30A A Raised Crumb and an Old Fashioned ($1.50 each) along with a large up of coffee ($2.49) is a nice treat.
1A679335-8A5A-4F02-ADD1-1F35FF011A91 A9FFC44A-245B-4B4C-B8F7-1EB67B4420BF The owner offered us a slice of 'bread pudding', a sort of experimental item which might be offered someday.  It was wonderful, rich and milky and topped (as well as filled) with butterscotch chips.  I would buy this.  But, what kind of bread?
A9FFC44A-245B-4B4C-B8F7-1EB67B4420BF The croissants which are made here, of course!
3EEE5355-296D-4512-AA64-97BACBA84C1A When you walk in, the Coffee Bar is in front of you.
AE6DF02A-DA9D-46D4-BDB2-B39D45F9DD50 Also when walking in, the window art lets you know there are more than donuts sold here.

We decided to share the Steak Sandwich ($13.75)

While paying, the chef walked by.  We were asked if we wanted fries, onion rings or mashed potato with the sandwich and we were hesitating.  We decided on onion rings and then chef asked if we were sharing…"yes", I answered…and then He said, 'well, I'll put the sandwich on two plates, he wants the rings, what do you want?' and I happily answered "mashed"…
FD4050A5-D4DA-43F8-952D-319F0DC09899 And so that's what we were served!
FD4050A5-D4DA-43F8-952D-319F0DC09899 I must say, the sandwich had to be cut anyhow to fit onto one plate.
E0B94AFE-2DDD-4EE7-AD32-32107C0C3C26
This is a steak sandwich, tender, melt in your mouth, pieces of steak (not the frozen, pre-sliced thin stuff) with a house made garlic aioli, grilled onion and mushrooms on a toasted roll.  The mashed potatoes were twice baked, with bacon bits and skins.  The rings were whole onions, lightly battered.  (Yes, slightly dark but not burned).

Completely unexpected and so very good.  Such service, such great food quality, such nice people working here.

Why hadn't I found this sooner?  How did I finally decide to stop by?

Beijing Express (Chinese Fast Food)

Thanks for stopping to read mmm-yoso!!!, a food blog.  Cathy is writing today while Kirk and His Missus are out and about, vacationing and researching some wonderful meals for you to vicariously enjoy in the future.

Whenever I'm driving on Spring Street (where it intersects with Broadway and Campo Road, at the mall anchored by iHop), it seems the words "Chinese Fast Food" jump out.  A mental note is made to stop and check it out.  The other day, The Mister and I stopped.  24F419CF-116B-44A2-A807-FBE365FD362F
Because Beijing Express is located in a mall close to a laundromat, we knew it must be good.
D90D0AA6-0744-4B29-BB1A-59391CDFAB73 There is no seating; there is no soup; there is a "Cash Only" sign.  There are 12 steam trays and each item is $2.39.  (You can choose rice or lo mein or half and half for the $2.39).
D90D0AA6-0744-4B29-BB1A-59391CDFAB73 So, we chose and paid and drove home.
4F7EC7D4-9C72-454C-B48E-9D19EE86C4AA The styrofoam containers are the 'small' size, but are packed full.  This one included 1/2 lo mein and 1/2 rice, chicken and vegetables and orange chicken.
4F7EC7D4-9C72-454C-B48E-9D19EE86C4AA This box was all rice (leftover for breakfast), pork with vegetables and ginger chicken. Total price with tax $15.68.
DF8D4542-A51F-4015-89D9-08F57EF0B42C Here's my plate: the pork with vegetables (onion, bell pepper, celery and peanuts)(not spicy); rice; lo mein; ginger chicken; orange chicken; chicken with zucchini and onions.  Everything was very fresh; no mushy vegetables (the line was constant and the steam trays were kept full).

Definitely will be stopping here instead of just driving past. The BBQ pork, fried whole shrimp and several other vegetable dishes will be ordered.

Chopstix (again)

mmm-yoso!!! is back with another post written by Cathy.  Kirk and His Missus remain on vacation and are enjoying so many activities!
DDEEAFBB-EFFF-41AF-BCAA-2F3497C70B5D Kirk wrote about Chopstix in 2005 and again in 2009.  I included a mention on a multi-post in 2016 and again in 2017 even though this 'original' location (Chopstix Too closed earlier this year) has been a rotational stop for The Mister and I for decades.

EB5C6B34-7E03-42B6-B170-597FC9A89DF6EB5C6B34-7E03-42B6-B170-597FC9A89DF6EB5C6B34-7E03-42B6-B170-597FC9A89DF6EB5C6B34-7E03-42B6-B170-597FC9A89DF6EB5C6B34-7E03-42B6-B170-597FC9A89DF6EB5C6B34-7E03-42B6-B170-597FC9A89DF6EB5C6B34-7E03-42B6-B170-597FC9A89DF6 Menu selections are consistent; no need to change what is good.  The most recent 'change' is that hot tea is now $1.
7F7D128D-7D74-4B71-A31D-C227C9788137 An order of mixed tempura ($11.95) is, as always, perfectly fried and includes three shrimp along with eight pieces of in-season vegetables.
D9C4BE01-ADB0-4762-A748-4667919A6003 I was craving Hiyashi ($13.95) on this warm day and did select the 'traditional' egg-ramen noodles (being able to select udon or somen is always an option).  The colorful bowl, anchored with chilled noodles and cold, crisp vegetables (cucumber, sprouts. ginger, seaweed and corn) and shredded egg/omelet along with the moist, perfectly crisp pieces of chicken karaage and pieces of imitation crab when mixed with the tangy, sesame/soy vinaigrette dressing is very refreshing.
CC6B7B4A-C47A-4106-BE1D-695F9944D1E8 The Mister was craving both the sweet and spicy flavors of Mabo (stir fried ground pork with tofu) ($10.95) and also Ton Katsu (deep fried breaded pork) ($2), so  He ordered the Mabo Don set which includes the miso soup and a small salad.  A full meal for $12.95.

The home-style food, atmosphere and friendly employees have remained consistent and Chopstix has survived-for more than 30 years.

Monnani Kkwabaegi-Korean Twisted Donuts (Zion Food Court)

Monnani Kkwabaegi has closed. It will be missed.

mmm-yoso!!! is being written by Cathy (again).  Kirk and His Missus are enjoying a vacation which you will soon enjoy, vicariously.2BDCA18C-72A5-406B-9345-89D763CA199A Located at the 'corner' of the Zion Food Court in the former location of Wok Bar and before that, Spotted Cow, Monnani Kkwabaegi recently opened.  (Soo wrote a post last month).
CE3AA836-F541-4975-95CC-0309C22BE413 Walk up, order, pay and wait about five minutes.  All items are made fresh.
4586986C-0D84-48D5-A823-C579E494E101C7FF492B-0569-4C49-A9E1-F6BF9B1DBB1B One day, I had ordered my meal at another Food Court business and decided that my 'side dish' should be a cheddar-mozzarella ($4.45).  This is probably now my favorite item here; quite large and wrapped in the delicious, slightly sweet fried dough.  The condiments of 'cheddar cheese' and 'cheese mustard' are tasty additions to add a variety to each bite (I add condiments on the second half of most menu items, enjoying the intended flavors on the first bites).
4586986C-0D84-48D5-A823-C579E494E101EB7C1E5A-54F7-41D8-9A97-E1DBBB3E25D7 One day I decided to try the Sausage Kkwabaegi ($3.25).  Not very large, a good sausage surrounded by the same light, sweet dough.  This was a nice snack.

Other fried dough items I haven't tried yet are the sweet potato and the red bean kkwabaegi.
6F34F892-5A10-4FC8-A6B3-01809EA82FBC Of course, the traditional Kkwabagi (two for $4.49) are what most people order.  The Mister chose matcha and ube flavors, saying he thought they were 'photographable'.  Very true and very nice flavors.  The matcha mixed with sugar had a nice 'background' flavor of green tea/tannin and the ube was lightly flavored but still the starch of ube was discernible.  The light crunchy exterior and chewy interior of these yeasty, twisted doughnuts is enhanced because they are still warm when served.

Other flavors available on the twisted doughnut are sugar, cinnamon, cheddar cheese and Oreo.

A nice snack, before or after your Zion Market shopping.

Solomon Bagel Company (North Park)

mmm-yoso!!! is a food blog.  Today, Cathy is writing.

Solomon Bagel Company has closed.  It will be missed.

The Mister and I had an appointment near the airport the other morning and decided to take the side streets instead of the freeway to get home.  We got to 30th street and found a parking spot.  925EAB83-2010-45F1-9B1A-AD313B162D6E It turns out that online, this relatively new (it opened in April 2020) shop is called Solomon Bagels and Donuts.  However on this day, there were no donuts (I overheard that something wasn't working that morning).  We weren't looking for donuts anyway.
5FDF8F98-8855-465E-A157-F49F98352DE9 The menu includes beverages, hot/cold/vegan sandwiches, a variety of toppings as well as donuts and donut holes on most days.
0029AE2D-0F69-42CB-B56F-4ED825445878 We were here around 10:30 in the morning and a lot was already sold out.  Good for this local business!

C21CABDD-6848-48E7-87EA-61D355B90960 199D5318-1611-4AD5-A9AA-3B9F928EBF37 I chose to try the Ukrainian Everything bagel with cream cheese.  A pumpernickel base with typical 'everything' seeds on both sides of the bagel, this was wonderful!  A good, chewy, New York style bagel (smaller than you find at the larger chain bagel stores).  I enjoy the rye flour base of pumpernickel.
898241B1-29C7-4310-9C61-90FCEABA25CA We also tried the countertop special of a Pastrami (on toasted rye, of course) ($8.99) with sauerkraut.  Lettuce, tomato and onion are also standard add ons for sandwiches.  The pastrami was of good quality; no pepper crust (which neither of us like).  Quite a large sandwich and another excellent, seeded rye, chewy bagel.

It must be crowded in the mornings, when there is a 15% discount before 8 a.m. – Lucky nearby neighbors.  We will return if there is available parking.  Soo was here in 2020.

Elsa’s Kitchen (again)(Greek and burgers)(SDSU area)

mmm-yoso!!! is being written by Cathy while Kirk and His Missus are catching up on missed vacationing.

Yes, I wrote about Elsa's Kitchen in 2007 and again in 2011, The Mister and I have been there many times since and here's another post.  Elsa's survived Covid-19. 2C8CE5F0-2AA4-46ED-ABB9-2E7EACA98561 Located in a nondescript strip mall with a nice sized parking lot at the NorthEast corner of El Cajon and 73rd, next to the gas station,
DFBF46C4-6C4C-44FB-9485-B00BFCD3C2AE Elsa's Kitchen has been here since at least 2009.
7E73023E-E389-44A8-93BF-A3639531F7A3
You order and pay at the hole in the wall and soon your order will be ready.

E6B933F0-383E-42D2-B283-113B978142F8 The pastrami burger ($6.99)is hand shaped and char-broiled.  I *love* the char broiled flavor.  It's topped with a quality pastrami (not the pepper coated one; a regular smoked corned beef; the Liquor Store next door sells Boars Head deli meats and I think they get the pastrami there) and the usual toppings.  Hefty and very, very good.
F9C2EB94-8CE9-4ADD-9A96-40BA6A3626AF The bun is toasted, both on the top and inside, making for a non-soggy sandwich.
4E121AA5-C1FD-49E5-8C12-A021B4594B26 The large greek salad ($10.99) is a great meal.  Plenty of gyros and very fresh  traditional Greek salad- romaine, tomato, onion, cucumber and Feta, served with a really nice dressing and tzatziki.
01F63448-075B-4396-939D-C110B40805E3 As always, a large order of onion rings ($3.99) was ordered.  I have mentioned before that all Greek restaurants make wonderful, from scratch, thick cut rings from sweet onions.  No exception here.

Elsa's Kitchen Greek and American Food 7022 El Cajon Blvd (619) 464-6711 Mon-Sat 9-9, Sun 9-8. (on our last visit, there was a window sign that it would be closed on Saturday and Sunday, so maybe call to check)BC400171-6E67-4281-8350-4644F5B877F2

Home Sweet Home Cafe (revisit) (Escondido)

mmm-yoso!!! is being written by Cathy today; Kirk and His Missus are vacationing.

The last time I wrote about Home Sweet Home Cafe was 2019-BC (before Covid-19).   Time for an update, because this oddly located Breakfast-Lunch mainstay has survived (for more than 20 years). 254A0335-A93B-4EFB-9B04-B8D0E4B117D3In the midst of a very industrial area of West Escondido, this nondescript restaurant storefront is open only for breakfast and lunch.  Parking is in front and along the side of the building.
1696DA64-BA79-4384-B63A-7214808A931D Many customers are 'regulars'.

AB76CA8F-D769-4F32-8D46-98CD6BF1E9EA My usual order is a ham and egg sandwich ($12) on rye, made with a good amount of juicy, non-salty ham steak.  The plate comes with a choice of potato.  The home fries are excellent, can be made with or without bell peppers and/or onion.  Optional home made gravy on the potatoes ($2.50) is worth it- it is bacon gravy (not sausage); a wonderful version.
254A0335-A93B-4EFB-9B04-B8D0E4B117D3 F9D64BDE-7715-470E-9F75-0BA9FFA8905B The Eggs Benedict ($12.50) are made with perfectly poached eggs and plenty of ham on top of a toasted English muffin, covered in a home made, lightly lemony hollandaise- (we asked for added spinach on this day).  Instead of potato on the side, a request for corned beef hash was accommodated ($2.50).  A good quality canned hash and fried to a nice crisp.
82ABA8E0-A192-4190-BEE2-75A58D174469 On another visit, The Mister ordered the corned beef hash and eggs ($12) substituting homemade corned beef ($1)- it's just corned beef!  A wonderful, lighter carb breakfast.  (The hash browns were nicely crisped, the over easy eggs were perfect and even the sourdough toast is a better/nice sour quality).

One day, I'll do a lunch post. Soo was here in 2021 and had a burger, among other items.

2023 Rose Parade float road test #2 and a food snack adventure.

mmm-yoso!!! is being written by Cathy for a few days; Kirk and His Missus are out and about, researching for more posts for you to enjoy.

Link to Road Test #1

At the end of July, another road test for 2023 Rose Parade floats was held.  Instead of The Mister and I driving up, friend and fellow blogger, cc  drove to our home, arriving at 5 a.m. and then she and I headed North to Irwindale.  We arrived after some floats had completed testing, but were able to still see a few interesting things.D54EE71C-DE67-4254-A233-0427648EF4FA The float barn is filling up. 5366D157-CECF-4721-ADA6-456375C221DA It looks like Phoenix Decorating will build 22 of the floats which will be in the Parade on January 2.  Decorating begins on December 3 and there is a link on that website.
D54EE71C-DE67-4254-A233-0427648EF4FA The Kiwanis International float is painted and essentially ready for decorating (this second road test had 'weight' (people) on board and the maneuverability, mechanics and fire drill all passed).  You can see the door open under the wave, for the "spotter" as well as the open door near the center, where the "driver" gets to his seat under the float.
D54EE71C-DE67-4254-A233-0427648EF4FA Unsure which float this is, but you can see the 'spotter' in front and a bit of the 'driver' all the way to the left and back in this photo.  This float is small enough to drive the parade route without having to 'collapse' under street lights and the freeway bridge along the way.
3A94B8C2-308C-4021-B568-1B4A003A78C7The float which will carry the Royal Court was being tested.  It's the same float used the previous three years and is not judged for any awards.  It is 'redecorated' each year.
0C0E02B9-82A1-4958-91BA-17AC746FC6B9 The Petal Pushers and Lutheran Hour Ministries float, "A New Day With Jesus" was tested and passed.
040B3179-663E-41BD-8A08-2AE417872BF6 Rotary International float, "Serving with Pride and Imagination", finished its testing and is also ready to be decorated. F8915AEF-FBE3-4E97-A280-C7A4126B3B52 "Hope for Peace", sponsored by the Oddfellows and Rebekahs was also tested.  I took this screenshot from the Phoenix Decorating Facebook page, which posts short videos of the floats on testing day.

/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Now, on to the food portion of this post.
29846377-CB74-4DD6-BF9E-F48E93C5ABB6 First, the obligatory stop at Portos, six miles South of the Float Barn.  A few days before, the County of Los Angeles had put another Covid ruling in place and we had to wait before entering the bakery.  We thought we wouldn't be allowed to eat inside.

To the right of the steam trays is a small doorway labeled 'Bakery' and in there, we found a nice display.

Takeout Lunches from Wa Dining Okan

In my most recent takeout post on EE Nami, "FOYs" Jason and Jessica mentioned that Okan's lunch specials were still priced right. Which made me wonder when I last did takeout from Okan. So I Okan TO Rev 01 did a quick lookback…and geez, it had been over 2 years!

Since I needed to pick up some groceries from Nijiya, getting takeout from Okan would be perfect!

I drove on over; parking is not so bad before 11am, walked on over to Okan, did the QR code thingy, and waited a few minutes until they opened. I was impressed to see that the prices for most of the base lunch specials were only $11.50, a bargain these days. Taking into consideration the drive home, when my chance to order arrived I went with the Buta Kakuni lunch set, which is what I also ordered during my last takeout visit.

I then went into Nijiya and did some quick shopping. I'm used to doing shopping at Nijiya at 9 in the morning….so the check-out line was a bit longer than I had expected. The young lady at Okan told me my order would be ready in ten minutes; but I took twenty at Nijiya. So, I quickly walked back over to Okan…..but to my relief, my order took another ten minutes anyway.

I drove on home and then opened up my Buta Kakuni Lunch Special ($11.50). It really didn't look too promising.

Okan TO Rev 02 Okan TO Rev 03  Sadly, the best thing about this lunch set was the okara salad of which there was a scant tablespoon and the miso soup, which was pretty good, as it always has been.

The rice was on the hard side and the boiled egg was a bit overcooked but fine, with no off flavors.

As for the buta kakuni, well, it looked very, very dark….as in black in color.

Okan TO Rev 04 Okan TO Rev 05   I bit into a piece, which was really salty; it had been sitting in the marinade too long and it was super dry and tough. In fact, the first thought that came into my mind was; "I ordered buta kakuni….not pork jerky".

I do understand that food costs are high these days, but this was really bad quality control. I guess they weren't kidding when they said things are "tough all over". Just look at that pork!

This meal really made me a bit sad, since I have a long history with Wa Dining Okan and also some great memories of meals shared with friends. So, I just had to give them another shot to see if that meal is the norm these days; or perhaps takeout just won't cut it at Okan.

Okan TO Rev 06

I was really craving the Tori Nanban here, but just knew it would not hold up….so, I decided to go with the Shogayaki. This was basically the same drill as the last time; told ten minutes, but actually took twenty-five.

Here's what I unpacked at home; the Shogayaki (Ginger Pork – $11.50). You can tell right away that this was a definite improvement from the buta kakuni.

Okan TO Rev 07

The miso soup was as good as on my previous visit; the rice much better this go-around.

The pork, while being a tad on the salty and chewy side was decent. In fact, it went well with the sliced cabbage which helped to cut the saltiness down. Now if they just sliced that cabbage finer….like, ahem…EE Nami??? This is stuff my Mom used to make, so of course I'm used to that flavor profile; more ginger, a bit sweeter…..but this is not bad and I'll readily have it again.

Okan TO Rev 09

I was somewhat relieved that my second meal was better than the first……though now the question arises; which is the norm here? I'm hoping it's more like my second meal. So perhaps soon, once I feel more comfortable dining al fresco here; I'll return for my Tori Nanban.
