Solomon Bagel Company (North Park)

mmm-yoso!!! is a food blog.  Today, Cathy is writing.

Solomon Bagel Company has closed.  It will be missed.

The Mister and I had an appointment near the airport the other morning and decided to take the side streets instead of the freeway to get home.  We got to 30th street and found a parking spot.  925EAB83-2010-45F1-9B1A-AD313B162D6E It turns out that online, this relatively new (it opened in April 2020) shop is called Solomon Bagels and Donuts.  However on this day, there were no donuts (I overheard that something wasn't working that morning).  We weren't looking for donuts anyway.
5FDF8F98-8855-465E-A157-F49F98352DE9 The menu includes beverages, hot/cold/vegan sandwiches, a variety of toppings as well as donuts and donut holes on most days.
0029AE2D-0F69-42CB-B56F-4ED825445878 We were here around 10:30 in the morning and a lot was already sold out.  Good for this local business!

898241B1-29C7-4310-9C61-90FCEABA25CA We also tried the countertop special of a Pastrami (on toasted rye, of course) ($8.99) with sauerkraut.  Lettuce, tomato and onion are also standard add ons for sandwiches.  The pastrami was of good quality; no pepper crust (which neither of us like).  Quite a large sandwich and another excellent, seeded rye, chewy bagel.

It must be crowded in the mornings, when there is a 15% discount before 8 a.m. – Lucky nearby neighbors.  We will return if there is available parking.  Soo was here in 2020.

Phuong Nga Bakery and Café Revisited

**** Phuong Nga Bakery and Cafe is now Banh Mi Express

With the recent hot and relatively muggy weather, I'd been craving banh mi. Also, I had been wanting to revisit Phuong Nga Bakery and Café, but when I initially dropped by after work, I saw that Phuong Nga Bakery Rev 01 their hours were now only from 8am to 3pm Mondays to Fridays. I did pass by on a Saturday and I noticed activity in the place. And then it dawned on me…..all that bread you see Phuong Nga selling from their counter is baked here! Duh….. And so, I made it a point to actually drop by during the shop's business hours to grab a banh mi.

The young man working was very nice and did confirm that the bread at Phuong Nga is indeed baked here.

Phuong Nga Bakery Rev 02

I ordered the Banh Mi with Ham and Pate (Banh Mi Thịt Nguoi – $6.19, all sign are only in English) to go and my sandwich was ready in a few minutes.

Phuong Nga Bakery Rev 03 Phuong Nga Bakery Rev 04b  The banh mi here have always been on the "hefty" side in my opinion and this was no different. First off, the bread was really crusty, I felt perhaps a bit too heavily baked? One bite resulted in crusty "shrapnel" flying in all directions. Still, this was much better than what I've recently had from Cali Baguette and Cali Banh Mi, both of which seemed to have "jumped the shark" a while back.

There was a nice smear of pate which I enjoyed and perhaps a bit too much Thịt Nguoi? But maybe that because of my own "PPP" (personal proportional preference)?

Phuong Nga Bakery Rev 04

The jalapeno was pretty mild and for some reason I felt the sandwich could have done with more cilantro and pickled veggies? Perhaps that's because of the larger amount of protein in this sandwich?

Phuong Nga Bakery Rev 05

Anyway, this did fill me up and I think is a decent option for banh mi. If that bread was just a little less baked, it would have brought it up a notch as it was nice and yeasty and the non-crust portions nice and tender. So, I'll probably check them out again soon.

Smokin’ Joe’s Soul Food Weekends at the Poseidon Project – A Quick Look

I had to make a quick run to Siesel's last week. At that time finding parking was just horrible and I managed to find a spot several blocks away from the shop. While walking back to the car I noticed a huge set-up in back of the Poseidon Project.

Smokin Joes 02 Smokin Joes 01   I went in and chatted with the nice folks at Poseidon and they told me that they were starting BBQ on weekends starting on the 5th of August, running from Fridays to Sundays.

Sure enough, I drove past the place yesterday and saw the signs up.

The BBQ is being done by the folks from Smokin' Joe's BBQ. If I recall, these were the folks doing BBQ in at Iowa Meat Farms a while back.

Since I'm all for more variety in our area, I decided to drop on in and get some takeout.

The drill is; you order from the friendly folks here, get a receipt, pay inside Poseidon, and return back with a ticket and pick up your order.

Before ordering, I asked what style of BBQ this was…especially since the menu had Pork Ribs, Beef Ribs, Tri-Tip, Sausage, and Brisket on it. Having worked and travelled thru some of the south during an earlier life, I was quickly educated on the BBQ of different regions. The guys working looked surprised when I asked, but quickly replied, "Mississippi style".

So, at least for me, unless it's Mississippi Smoked Pot Roast (it's really good, try it if you have a chance) it's basically pork products. I was tempted with pulled pork, but really was craving some ribs and rib tips, which is what I got. Speaking of what I got; the meal also gets you three sides…..aaah, the good 'ole "meat n' three" in spirit.

Smokin Joes 03

And also some (rather mediocre) corn bread.

Smokin Joes 04 Smokin Joes 05  The rib and tips both had a very nice, deep, distinctive smoke ring and a decent, almost "crisp" if uneven bark.

The amount of run used on the baby backs made it really salty, though strangely, the amount on the rib tips were perfect.

The rib tips were very tender, moist, with the porky flavor shining thru and was my favorite. If the baby backs weren't as salty; they would have been quite good as the meat came off the bone perfectly.

The sauce was on the sweeter side; though the spicy version had a good amount of spice. I really didn't use any of it for my ribs/tips.

Smokin Joes 06

As for the sides. Well, I had wanted Black Eyed Peas but they were out.

My favorite item was usually one of my least favorite' the Breen Beans. Can you tell why?

Smokin Joes 07

Yep, that's fatty pork parts in the beans. It added some good flavor. Also, as you can tell, unlike many versions the beans aren't overcooked and are tender, but still somewhat firm. I'm not a fan of mushy green beans….mushy peas maybe, but not green beans.

I thought the texture of the collard greens, usually one of my favorite items was good.

Smokin Joes 08

But this was much too salty and acidic. I also like a nice touch of smokiness in my collards which this lacked; perhaps it was shrouded by all that salt?

The Mac and Cheese was like one giant lump and not my favorite.

Smokin Joes 09

Still, not a bad start. And I'll try them out a again in a couple of weeks. It's a nice addition to the neighborhood and I hope they stick around. I enjoyed the BBQ from Joe's much more than other places that had opened (then closed in the area). It might be a good option if you're grabbing a cold one from Harland or Poseidon; or just looking for a picnic at Mission Bay across the freeway.

And sometimes, because I'm getting and such….these type of posts bring back blogging memories.

And also is a reminder that I need to start using the 'ol smoker again.

RC 03

Anyway, if you check out Smokin' Joe's, let me know what you think.

Dining In at Golden City

**** Golden City has closed

Calvin recently told me that he wanted to grab some lunch….not meet outdoors for a lunch to go; but actually dine in. Of course we’d take precautions; masks, tests, and eat during the middle of the week at 11am. As for what he wanted? He was craving Golden City, which used to be a pretty regular stop for us when our offices were located in Kearney Mesa. It was interesting…….even though I’ve done takeout from Golden City during the pandemic, the last time I actually ate in the restaurant was with Calvin at the beginning of 2019! Over 3 1/2 years ago!

So, I arrived and waited a minute or so before Calvin got there. We were the first and other than one other group that arrived about 20 minutes into our meal, the only folks dining. There was a steady flow of takeout business though.

GC In 01

Based on my last takeout post on Golden City a month ago, you might be asking if I’m just a glutton for punishment. Still, I did want to see if the Kwai Fei Chicken was goin to be better then what I’d last gotten for takeout.

So, of course we ordered that, plus two items from the lunch specials menu.

Since we had ordered the two lunch specials soup was included. Both Calvin and I got the hot and sour soup.

GC In 02

Which was really bad. Look at that color; it was so thick like glue, you could smell the vinegar smell from a distance. Both Calvin and I took one sip and were done.

This did not bode well for the meal; but things turned around quickly once the Kwai Fei Chicken arrived.

GC In 03  GC In 04 Take a look at the color of the ginger-scallion sauce to the right and compare it to what I had gotten on my last takeout visit. This had the perfect amount of ginger, tasted crisp, and was perfect. Versus the browning, rancid flavored stuff I’d had last time.

The chicken, while still not as flavorful as it was when I used to get it at the old Convoy location; this was super moist and tender. Which made me wonder; Kwai Fei Ji should travel well, its served at room temperature or colder so I don’t think this would be a takeout versus dining in issue. Perhaps the “B” team was on during my last visit?

Speaking of “B” team, look at the rice we were served.

GC In 05

Can you see the hard clump? And the uneven cooking?

I had forgotten that Calvin doesn’t care for eggplant, so we ended up getting the Salted Fish and Chicken with Tofu instead of eggplant.

GC In 06

In spite of needing some “color” other than greyish-white….the presentation looked awful, this was decent if not quite up to the versions at Noble Chef in terms of funky-salty tones from the salted fish. The tofu was soft and tender as were the pieces of chicken, the dish wasn’t over salty.

Calvin enjoys eating with me because he can get dishes that his Missus won’t eat….or even allow in the house for that matter! We got the Crispy Pork Intestines.

GC In 07

This had a decent offal-ly flavor if a bit on the sweet side. The sweetness nullified any of the salty-earthiness that the fermented black bean would contribute. The intestines were hard and chewy instead of crisp and the “sauce” was a bit too “gloppy” and clumpy.

Still, the Kwai Fei Chicken was better than any version I’ve had in recent memory. Which, on this day was good enough for me.

Mahalo Shave Ice Company (inside Zion)

mmm-yoso!!! is (again) being written by Cathy today, while Kirk and His Missus are vacationing.

In January, Mahalo Shave Ice opened, taking the place of Cocohodo, (which truly is missed) in the Zion Market Food Court

46E6CB64-B79D-4F74-B671-1E777E945419 In 2016, Mahalo began as a shave ice food truck.  It expanded into an Arizona franchise in 2020, along with catering events.  The  Zion Market storefront is the first brick and mortar location for this (now two location) locally owned  business "inspired by the beauty of the Hawaiian people".
3A24A123-AB64-47E2-9D1B-2ABA6CD4C830 The menu is simple; Five items.
8F7A26C0-5062-4132-A0DC-DD1C571EF25C The choice of flavors can be not as simple, depending on your cravings.

3A24A123-AB64-47E2-9D1B-2ABA6CD4C830 For this shave ice plate ($6), I chose li hing mui guava (li hing is the flavor of dried, salty plums) and tigers blood (strawberry, watermelon and coconut) flavors; not very photogenic but very tasty.  Adding ice cream ($1) rounded out the plate.

Friendly people working here, serving great, shareable treats.

Mahalo Shave Ice 7655 Clairmont Mesa Blvd San Diego 92111 (Zion Market Food Court) Website Open Wed-Sun 11-7, closed Mon-Tue

You may have noticed above the menu board "Proudly and lovingly crafted with cane sugar & ocean friendly utensils".  The 'plate/bowl' is a quality compostable type of material, the little straw is made of bamboo and the spoon (printed with the logo) is fascinating, eco-friendly-and works.  We had never seen a spoon like that before and within a week of our visit here, had seen similar spoons at several places.

Paragon Deli Cafe (Point Loma)

Paragon Deli Cafe closed in September 2024.  It is very much missed.

mmm-yoso!!! will be written by Cathy over this Independence Day weekend; Kirk is doing things with His Missus.

It was three years ago when Kirk first posted about Paragon Deli Cafe.   I had commented about something on the menu.
4EB1F681-8E60-4F4A-9655-CAAA30C789A5Recently, I had a craving for tomato stuffed with tuna salad, an old fashioned menu item rarely seen (and very missed), I checked out the menu at Paragon.067FF715-67C7-40A0-BD53-A9157846B07B  12D849CC-9DE9-4430-82E6-76C76D3AACB3 First, it was great to see they were still in business.  Second- the tuna stuffed tomato ($10.95) was still on the menu!7E9F9554-A11C-4290-874C-6211F0ECBBA8 A wonderful, refreshing, flavor filled version of this simple diner classic.  Served on top of a bed of lettuce with a house made dressing, this is a great lunch.

6C86AD6A-F552-4296-9016-7407272CF7BD as well as a cup ($5) (vegetarian pea) were enjoyed on visits.  The 'everyday' soups (tomato basil and chicken noodle) are priced $4 and $5.25.

Linguica, ham, roast beef, cheese, topped with a runny fried egg and sauce covering it all-including the fries.  The sauce-you can taste the beer as well as the whiskey.  Magical and it makes me understand why Kirk craved (then raved) about this wonderful sandwich.

You will notice on the menu the namesake Pacific Paragon Sandwich ($12.95), which originated at Marston's Tea Room.  Marston's was a downtown San Diego Department Store before being sold to The Broadway in 1961.  This sandwich won a 1960 American Restaurant Magazine award for "Best Sandwich".

Speaking of eggs, Paragon opens at 7 a.m., so there is breakfast.2A282A78-6238-4417-83B9-B5CDC129B8AA
486CD16F-6710-4A69-B379-1FC9E64825B8 The Croque Madame ($13.95) is made with French ham, gruyere and a house made béchamel.  Very tasty and filling.

Paragon Deli Cafe serves quality food and has the friendliest people working here; most are family.

Da Kine’s Reopens in La Mesa

**** This location is closed and Nelson is currently only doing catering

I know a lot of folks have been waiting for Da Kine's to reopen in their new location in La Mesa. I need to thank "FOYs" KerriK and DerekR for keeping me in the loop and providing updated information for me. So finally, a couple of weeks back Kerri told me that Da Kine's was in soft opening mode. Now I needed to make some time to check them out and I finally managed to do so this past weekend.

I've noted my history with Da Kine's in previous posts and Nelson even mentioned the reason he "gave" the various locations and "trademark" of the restaurants to employees during a visit to the defunct Linda Vista location.

When it comes down to it; it seems that "Uncle Nelson" as I've heard folks calling him has a connection with ex-pat Kama'aina's of a certain generation and their "ohana". I will agree, that be it for better or worse, his plate lunches do take me back to "those days". Simple, no muss, no fuss, no pretense "high maka maka" grindz. Beneath that kind of gruff exterior there always seemed to be someone who cared about folks….I posted on Da Kine's helping to sponsor a concert by Kalapana back in 1999, when I was doing a consulting gig here in San Diego. I had already moved to LA and was feeling a bit homesick and that concert lifted my spirits.

So, it was good to see the sign up for Da Kine's when I arrived.

DK Ret 01

There were also folks lined up outside the door when I arrived, 10 minutes before the 11am opening time.. That photo above was taken as I left the place.

The interior seemed quite modern, a change from the rustic themes of his former locations. There's both table and bar seating, all backed with a wonderful mural….with Valley of the Temples and Mokoli'i (Chinaman's Hat) in it.

DK Ret 02

It does look a bit modern and hipster. I would have taken a better photo of the mural, but several tables were quickly taken by folks who ordered ahead of me….one of the guys got three cans of Hawaiian Sun for himself! And he opened all three cans at once when he got to his table……nothing worse than needing a "POG" fix, right?

The young man working the counter was very ncie; though I could see Nelson holding himself back from actually working the line as he was training his kitchen staff.

So Derek, they do have kalua pork on the menu….I know you enjoy Nelson's version; of course they have a loco moco……but I had a bit of a drive so I thought I'd give the Teri Chicken ($15) another try.

DK Ret 03 DK Ret 04  First off, the good…..man, I really enjoyed the mac salad here, just as good as what I'd had at the Linda Vista location. Nicely seasoned, liked the amount of black pepper, amazingly still chilled after the drive all the way to Bay Park, just enough mayo. I've had mushy rice at Da Kine's in the past, but today it was perfect. You could see every grain, but it was still moist and tender.

As for the chicken? Well, at least it wasn't overly salty, but it could have used a bit more color and a stronger marinade/sauce (if he's still just "dipping" his chicken). It was not as dry as what I'd had before though.

DK Ret 05

So, perhaps when I do drop by again, I'll dine in and get a loco moco or kalua pork; or maybe Kerri, you could let me know if Nelson's going to have chicken long rice and lau lau on the menu?

In the end, if only for sentimental reasons, it was good seeing Nelson running around the kitchen area in his shorts and sneakers, teaching the young one's how to scoop rice and stuffs.

DK Ret 06

And the folks in line were a lot younger as well…….a couple of them looked like they might not have been born when I made my first visit to Da Kine's back in 1999. So I guess Uncle Nelson is feeding a whole new generation.

Iron Pig – A Takeout Revisit

**** Iron Pig has closed

The recent warm weather had the Missus craving takeout from Iron Pig. So I dropped by, placed an order, and then went to do a quick visit to Trader Joe's. My takeout was ready when I returned to Iron Pig. I had found parking nearby and everything just seemed hunky dory.

On my last post, I noted that the wings were dry and tough. Unfortunately, these were basically the same.

Iron Pig TO 01_02

Large, meaty wings, but super dry and tough, and the large size meant that it was somewhat lacking in enough smokiness.

I also got the Rib Tips and specifically asked for sauce on the side. Sadly, this must have been lost in the translation.

Iron Pig TO 02_02

Over-sauced and very salty……

Our favorite menu item over the years is the Man Salad…make that the Gender Neutral Salad. Which looked mighty appetizing.

Iron Pig TO 03_02

Until we started eating….and started noticing something…hidden underneath all those fries and brisket.

IMG_3397

All those brown and discolored greens. Sigh…….

I take no pleasure in typing this out and it's kind of sad to get a meal like this from a place that's been a favorite over the years. We understand that times are tough and are trying to support local businesses, but it seems like the appreciation is not being returned? Not quite sure what to make of this meal…..

Himalayan Palace Restaurant (Sports Arena)

Thanks for stopping by to read mmm-yoso!!!, a blog about food.  Cathy is writing today.

In February, The Mister and I found ourselves in the Sports Arena area of town and pulled into the parking lot between Phil's BBQ and Red Lobster.948FA038-4BF8-4F84-98FA-24A239B4BEAE_1_201_a In the back of that parking lot, we saw cars parked in front of this longstanding establishment and decided to try it for lunch. We have returned. (Prices have changed; I will list current approximate prices).
948FA038-4BF8-4F84-98FA-24A239B4BEAE_1_201_a The colorful interior (look at that ceiling!) is happy.

The menu is small, one sheet printed on both sides.
948FA038-4BF8-4F84-98FA-24A239B4BEAE_1_201_a The Paneer Pakora ($7) is paneer cheese wrapped in chickpea batter and deep fried.2C678EAB-CE7D-4EA2-8B3D-E84AEF068E52 The little pockets are served with a tamarind dip and a mint chutney.  This was a wonderful choice of both textures and flavors.
948FA038-4BF8-4F84-98FA-24A239B4BEAE_1_201_a The keema naan (ground lamb filled bread)($8) was also an excellent choice. Fresh made bread filled with ground lamb which was cooked with various herbs. Satisfying and tasty.
948FA038-4BF8-4F84-98FA-24A239B4BEAE_1_201_a The Muligatawny soup ($7) was absolutely mesemerizing with the lentils and chicken and (mild) curry along with a bit of 'sweet' (apple).389EF0A7-9C44-441D-A0B1-53383FB8BF51 On the most recent visit, the mulligatawny was not on the menu, but mushroom soup ($7) was a choice.  Creamy, garlic-y minced mushrooms blended with cumin and a few other spices, with a touch of (black?) pepper 'heat' in the background.  A good size serving.

3A7AA5AC-BB7C-4CCB-AE1C-3F30DAA93651 Chicken Biryani ($14) is served in this deceptively deep bowl.  Basmati rice and shredded carrots with boneless chicken, ghee and whole spices (we chewed on some cardamom pods along with mustard seeds and fennel seeds; there were more) and fresh mint and cilantro. So many flavors!

7613C576-FC55-4FD7-ADCF-F9FFB5C7500D On our first visit, we saw this window signage.  The price has increased to $11.95.  Worth it.
948FA038-4BF8-4F84-98FA-24A239B4BEAE_1_201_a This is the 'non-vegetable' Thali. Rice and papadum (dough made with lentils or black beans, rolled very thin and deep fried) at the top (clockwise) Tandoori chicken, pickled vegetables, chicken tikka masala.  In the center is kheer (rice pudding).CE41844B-AD18-497B-919A-1E73D2556939 The vegetable Thali plate with rice and papadum , Navaratna Korma (onion, ginger, cashews, garlic and sesame seeds blended with coconut milk to make a sauce) along with carrot, onion, peas, raisins, almonds and paneer. Pickled vegetables. Saag (spinach) paneer (really good). Again, kheer in the center dessert area.
13CB4B08-3148-4196-A8CF-F6D9DE31C3DEThe lunch specials include butter naan.

All in all, this longstanding (32 years) restaurant survived the Pandemic for a reason; quality.  The friendly, informative staff and plethora of  'regulars' along with the remarkable fresh and flavorful choices make this a wonderful place for a meal.

Verbena Kitchen – A Quick Look

*** Verbena Kitchen has closed

*** As we continue our "quick look" series – be aware that these posts are based on single visits

After dining at Wolf in the Woods and Black Radish, the Missus implored me to find yet another new place to have an early, not-crowded or outdoor dining place to try. I recalled that a restaurant named Verbena Kitchen had opened in the spot where Splash Wine Lounge used to be. I sent a the Missus a link to the website and She just didn't seem interested!!! I then sent Her the link to the Happy Hour menu….which starts at 4pm, which for us, in these times where we really don't want to be around too many people sounded perfect. So I made reservations for an outdoor table at 4pm.

Verbena 01

We arrived exactly at 4pm and was met with the most friendly, gracious guy whose name I believe is Dallas. He was wonderful to deal with. And since it was a bit windy on this day, he even saved us a table indoors in case we didn't want to eat outdoors. But we found an outdoor table in the corner, where sun still shone on us that we liked. Even though the outdoor seating is located street side and the traffic light meant buses and cars stopped right next to us; we enjoyed watching all the pooches walking by and the staff were so very nice.

And he was quick to tell us about the Happy Hour menu.

The Missus had a sangria which She enjoyed….in fact She had a second one!

The Missus enjoys Deviled Eggs so we got 5 at $2 a piece for HH, versus $15 on the regular menu.

The Missus cracked up at the micro cilantro…..if you've seen any of the soups I make, you'll notice that we use a heck of a lot of micro cilantro these days. This was our favorite dish of the evening. Even though the crab on the deviled eggs were pretty much an afterthought we loved the mustard forward flavor of the egg yolk mixture which was texturally nice and creamy. The whites were cooked nicely as well.

The Oysters were our least favorite dish on the evening $1/each HH, versus $18 for a half dozen regular menu.

Verbena 03 Verbena 04  If you've ever read any of my posts where we eat raw oysters, you'll know that I don't put a lot of "stuff" on my oyster. I prefer at most, a touch of lemon and really savor the "finish" of the raw oyster. These Baja oysters were super briny, almost salty, without the nice "cucumbery" or "briny raw beef" finish. It just seemed to lack nuance. Still, at six bucks……

We also got the Peruvian Shrimp Ceviche $14HH, $17 regular price.

So, while this didn't use a "leche de tigre" for the cebiche as they would do in Peru; it was not bad. The aji amarillo was quite mild and this wasn't overly acidic. I did like the combination of Inka Corn, Furikake, tomato, red onion, and the aji. For some reason, I really liked it matched up with those sweet potato chips…perhaps I was channeling camote? The one thing we didn't care for was that the shrimp was fully cooked….not in lime juice, but actually fully cooked, rubbery, and tasteless. Heck, I could have just had everything but the shrimp and be perfectly happy.

We weren't sure about the Wagyu Beef Tartare ($18) when it arrived at our table.

Verbena 07

It seemed drenched in mayo, which turned out to be a decently flavored Dijon based aioli. We liked the grated cured egg yolk, which tasted like good salted egg yolk. We weren't sure about the fermented mushrooms, but they were very meaty in texture, and the capers really, well "capped" off the dish. The beef was cut a bit too coarse, but this was a pretty good dish overall. The slices of cucumber seemed to have had rice vinegar drizzled on it. I'd have this again. Verbena 08

Overall, a decent meal, for a very nice price, the most inexpensive of these "quick look" dinners. A big plus was the friendly and gracious staff.  "Dallas" told us to return on a Thursday when it's Happy Hour prices all evening. I do think we'll return.
