Little Sheep Mongolian Hot Pot & Grill (lunch again)

Thanks for stopping to read mmm-yoso!!! on this Thanksgiving week. Cathy is writing while Kirk and His Missus are vacationing.

My most recent post about the regular menu at Little Sheep Mongolian Hot Pot, a chain with worldwide locations, was in 2020.  My most recent post regarding the lunch menu was in 2021.  A year later, not much has changed. 162E16B0-EEAE-4F90-9CBE-F150872EDA23

3CB7D30C-8A60-476D-A656-49A72E0C07CC We ordered the House Original and the House Spicy broths/"Yin Yang" ($4.25 per person).  You can also order a mushroom broth as well as low sodium.
3CB7D30C-8A60-476D-A656-49A72E0C07CC The Supreme Angus Beef Lunch ($10.70) is accompanied by assorted seasonal vegetables ( thick slices of potato, daikon, a variety of mushrooms and greens) as well as fresh noodles, 'krab" sticks, frozen tofu and assorted meatballs (pork, beef and fish).  The Angus beef pieces were nicely marbled and very flavorful; quickly cooked to a pleasant tenderness in the boiling broth.
3CB7D30C-8A60-476D-A656-49A72E0C07CC Once again, I chose the fish filet lunch ($10.70) which has the same sides and includes an entire filet.  This was plenty of food.
3CB7D30C-8A60-476D-A656-49A72E0C07CC However the menu has "Add Ons" at the bottom and we decided to order the mini veggie platter ($3.95) just to try the 'lunch version'.   This was really worth it: tomato, squash, corn, bok choy, cabbage, spinach, mushrooms and chrysanthemum greens (tangho).

All in all, an excellent tasty meal.

Crack Taco Shop (San Diego)

mmm-yoso!!! is being written by Cathy this Monday of Thanksgiving week.  Kirk and His Missus have arrived at the first stop of their holiday destination.

In May of 2019, this storefront location of "Cardiff Crack" opened in Mission Valley (on Camino Del Rio North, at the Northwest corner where it crosses Mission Gorge Road at the 8).  The owners of the Seaside Market in Cardiff, which has been selling the infamous burgundy-pepper marinated tri-tip since 1985 expanded to a location between San Diego State University and the new Snapdragon Stadium.  4DF17C0F-A3E2-4B27-B9E9-CC8741A9CC08
F901D44A-ED58-41D5-A5D6-0A69F122B447 Walk in, order and pay, grab your beverages, find a seat and wait for your meal and condiments to be brought out.
1289CA07-6370-4B90-BEAC-F9CD5F69E0C91289CA07-6370-4B90-BEAC-F9CD5F69E0C9 The menu board is above the two cash registers. ( I was wearing sunglasses and it looked black/not working, so I didn't take a photo).
F901D44A-ED58-41D5-A5D6-0A69F122B447 The Grilled Cactus Taco was just something different that I'd never seen on a menu, so we decided to order one ($3.95).  This is served on a home made corn tortilla- very nice, very flavorful (corny)(ha) and it stood up to all the ingredients (house made guacamole (also very good),  cilantro, onions).  This was a really tasty taco.  I would order it again.
F901D44A-ED58-41D5-A5D6-0A69F122B447 We also decided to try an Al Pastor taco ($3.95) .  There were some pineapple bits in addition to the guacamole, cilantro and onion.  The pork was very tender and had a nice char-grill flavor.  The sweetness of the pineapple marinade was subtle if you tried a bite of the (plain) meat.  Quite good quality.
E33F6BA6-89C6-4EB5-8A4B-A4F1869DC4E6 We ordered the Roasted Pepper Caesar Salad ($10.95) add crack ($4.95). It arrived without the roasted peppers, but plenty of the tri-tip.
44D2F12C-4879-419F-A0B7-8C2169BA6EAF A good size portion of the roasted peppers was brought out and these were very good. (I've been buying jarred roasted peppers for use on sandwiches at home and really kind of crave them).

Because of this mistake, we were able to try tie 'Crack' unadorned.  The meat was tender and had a nice char on some pieces but wasn't extraordinary and really was fairly dull.

However, we have returned with friends; it's not terrible; everything is fresh. Soo was here!

Tim Ky Noodle (Mira Mesa)

mmm-yoso!!! is being written by Cathy today; Kirk and His Missus are enjoying the start of a lengthy vacation in another country.

The Mister and I had planned to try out the recently re-opened Pho Lucky, but decided against it and instead walked to the other end of the strip mall to Tim Ky Noodle, which Kirk had written an indoor eating post in 2019 and a "to go" post in 2020.  {The Mister and I have been here previously but I never posted.}

The majority of choices are Vietnamese with some Chinese choices also.

45808A70-DFF8-4EAC-82A6-B415788938D3 The seafood chow mein (crispy noodles) ($15.99) was quite large, filled with shrimp, fish and scallops as well as very fresh vegetables.  Excellent.
45808A70-DFF8-4EAC-82A6-B415788938D3 The salt and pepper fish filet with rice ($16.99) was also a very large portion.  Light and crisp fry (proper) and onion were all that was needed for this meal.  We did have leftovers of both.

2023 Rose Parade Float Road Test #5, Breakfast at Portos and Dim Sum King

mmm-yoso!!! is being written by Cathy today.  This blog is about food as well as reasons leading to the food.

On the last Saturday of October, The Mister and I drove up to Irwindale to observe the fifth road test of 2023 Tournament of Roses Rose Parade floats.

On this day only a few floats were being tested for mechanics and maneuverability.
284C9124-CE5A-45F2-865D-CBF1EC225F8B Here is the Elks (a fraternal organization) 2023 Rose Parade entry, which needs to collapse to go along the Parade Route.  The size of the door leading to the Phoenix Decorating Barn is the exact maximum height and width to allow passage.
6CAA2CC9-1BE6-48D6-BF47-88572D047DBE It is a magnificent float when fully expanded.
284C9124-CE5A-45F2-865D-CBF1EC225F8B Fezzy Bear, the Shriners Hospitals for Children mascot, and their 2023 float, is still in its rebar stage.
B66B602C-AED2-4AA3-848B-AE1C69E50A32 Apparently this float will be highlighting the annual Shriners Golf Tournament fundraiser.

95A41D47-CB20-43F3-B66B-42B7A1BBD28B The Lions Clubs International float, "Bridging the World Through Service" was tested with weight (people) onboard for the mechanics and maneuverability as well as the ability to exit the float within 45 seconds in case of a fire.

All in all, a short day.  So, we headed out to look for breakfast.

2E7D0D80-B2E7-40C6-AFC4-85F0561261C8 It is so easy to get to the West Covina Portos (six miles South on the same road as the decorating barn).
2E7D0D80-B2E7-40C6-AFC4-85F0561261C8 Getting here before 8 a.m., there are no crowds.
74760763-968A-4E48-89D9-12BFDEA38844 We ordered a medianoche (Midnight) sandwich ($7.19); a Cubano (pork, ham, Swiss, pickles and a mustard/mayonnaise dressing) on a sweet, dark bread (instead of a lighter Cuban roll).
74760763-968A-4E48-89D9-12BFDEA38844 Also a ham and cheese omelette sandwich ($5.95) (on a fresh, buttery croissant).A6CD4FCF-033F-43D5-9CDA-FDA41B2AC70A Of course, I had to get a loaf of bread (walnut raisin ($4.15)).

Of course, some of these items were shared with friends.  Portos Bakery, many locations, Website

Then I remembered our breakfast after the Fourth Road test and wanted dim sum!

Once again, The Mister was navigating via his phone, searching for "Dim Sum".  Soon we were here.

2023 Rose Parade Float Road Test #4, breakfast at Ocean Bo (El Monte)

The last Saturday in September had The Mister and I wide awake and driving North on I-5 before 5 a.m..  There were several traffic problems mentioned on the radio and we cut back across the 78 to I-15 and took a different-than-usual route to Irwindale and Phoenix Decorating Company, arriving at about 7:15.  Floats were on the street and being tested for mechanics and maneuverability.

FA14ADCC-546B-4A2F-BE5E-24E547DA772D The final float of the parade 'announces' the Rose Bowl football game which will start four hours after the Rose Parade ends  (on January 2, 2023, because there is never a Parade or Game on a Sunday).
75800233-5C0A-4004-931E-C33DBB685159Here is the same float on December 31 last year; it is not judged but always freshly decorated.
FA1AB2B5-AFA2-43F7-A38B-DBCE92926311 D8182395-3572-43DD-83EE-D8EC299264CE The Mutual of Omaha Wild Kingdom float, "Protecting The Wild" was being tested.  You can see the tree in the back of the float 'collapses' to be able to fit down the Parade route. (See how other  floats collapse in the Road Test #3 post).

C4697FA3-4C37-4D4C-9E7B-7A33CDA5C36B Here is the artist rendering of the Mutual of Omaha float.

93655C2B-3AEA-4682-8E5D-D00470A4D863 In the front is the

skeleton/rebar version of the Elks 2023 entry to the Parade.  It is backing into the barn, to the right (you can see the driver of this float, if you enlarge the photo-he is past the middle, to the far right).  You can also see the Wild Kingdom float (with the trees in position) and the Royal Court float behind this Elks float. 250E53E2-0070-4D88-928C-BAB04C209150(Royal Court float being decorated on December 31)

03DF6D1E-8D11-420D-877E-44DA2395B344 The front appears to be a 'chopper' motorcycle.
03DF6D1E-8D11-420D-877E-44DA2395B344 The attached second part of the float is a pirate ship; I see the ships wheel, collapsed sail, giant pelican, a banana and a collapsed palm tree.  It will be interesting to see the progress.

On October 13, Former Arizona Congresswoman Gabby Giffords was announced as the Grand Marshal of the 2023 Rose Parade.  The theme of the parade, "Turning the Corner", epitomizes Gabby's remarkable recovery from traumatic injuries.

//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

On to the food portion of this post.  I was not craving a 'traditional' breakfast.  Since The Mister is a navigator, I told him to type in "Dim Sum" on his phone and direct me. C738A883-945F-4613-B220-B8DDC70BA15C Soon, we were in El Monte, parked, walked in and were able to get a table right away.
C738A883-945F-4613-B220-B8DDC70BA15C The other entrance door lead to the steam trays and take out area of the restaurant.
C7560CBA-F964-461F-95FB-5F336838F611C7560CBA-F964-461F-95FB-5F336838F611 Each table had a menu and a pen; we ordered.  Soon, everything was brought out to our table at the same time.
BCBAAE80-8E6A-4C78-B249-FC75CE06B1DA I was not the only person taking photos of food.
4EC0F8AE-A44C-4268-920F-8F2FCF8B71BE The salted chicken porridge ($6.89) was wonderful with a great chicken stock base; you can tell the porridge had been simmering a long time.  The chopped pieces of bone-in chicken were plentiful.
4EC0F8AE-A44C-4268-920F-8F2FCF8B71BE Pork Shiu Mai ($4.29) were quite large, very well flavored (didn't need additional soy nor chili sauce). In addition to the chopped pork and shrimp, the filling had crispy water chestnuts, carrot and mushroom.
4EC0F8AE-A44C-4268-920F-8F2FCF8B71BE The Seafood Gow ($4.29) were particularly good.  The crisp, pan fried dumpling, filled with pieces of fish, shrimp and crab as well as (spinach?) greens; turned out to be our favorite bite of the morning.
4EC0F8AE-A44C-4268-920F-8F2FCF8B71BE The shrimp rice rolls ($5.39) were each filled with two plump, large, flavorful shrimp.  The rice noodles and sauce complimented each bite in flavor and texture.
4EC0F8AE-A44C-4268-920F-8F2FCF8B71BE The shrimp Har Gow ($4.29), steamed in tapioca flour wrappers.  Filled with very plump, large shrimp, this 'staple' of Dim Sum restaurants was a delightful treat.
4EC0F8AE-A44C-4268-920F-8F2FCF8B71BE The baked egg tart ($4.29) was a perfect ending to the meal.  The still warm and eggy custard inside the multi-layered Chinese puff pastry (less oily/more flour-y than traditional puff pastry) was just so perfect.

Thai Thai/Oishii (Santee)

Thanks for stopping by to read mmm-yoso!!!, a food blog.  Cathy is writing today.  Kirk and His Missus are having a wonderful time on vacation.

I've written about Oishii three times, the latest was in 2011.  Back then, it was only one of two Thai restaurants in Santee and the two sided menu had more Japanese choices than Thai.  Now Santee has five Thai restaurants.  Anyhow, at some point during the Covid-19 slowdown, the "Japanese" menu/Oishii/sushi bar disappeared and Thai Thai (there's another location in Fallbrook) became the name of the restaurant with the menu being only Thai.  A few months ago, the original sushi chef, Mike, returned and so did the sushi bar and the name.

4D6639F6-DE31-48E9-A0ED-AD25C12342D5 The interior had undergone changes.

4D6639F6-DE31-48E9-A0ED-AD25C12342D5 There is a Lunch Special menu available Tues-Friday.  Specials include 'vegetarian soup' -yes, miso- as well as 'salad', vegetarian egg roll and fried wonton.
082C01E8-200B-4C2D-812E-511F9F353D70 On this day, yellow curry with chicken ($11.95) was The Mister's choice.  The curries here are very good- there are eight types.  Yellow curry is made with potatoes, carrot and onion and coconut milk.  A filling, flavorful meal.
5C6B2C74-F0EA-45FF-A0BB-F682DBB38954 During the pandemic, I would order 'to go' from the appetizer menu.  #13, "Crispy Rice Salad" (Nam Kat Tod) has become a favorite.  The spicy lime sauce compliments the red and green onion, dry chili flakes, fresh ginger, mint, cilantro and cashews.
2864CD8A-2B87-499D-9E12-DD8D2D5F60F7 All of that is mixed with sour fermented pork (and thinly sliced cartilage) mixed with the crispy rice and toasted rice flour.  Very satisfying, especially during our heat wave.449FEF04-F060-45FD-9626-A0E14F3EDF36

Kaelin’s- Eating inside the market

mmm-yoso!!! continues being blogged by Cathy while Kirk and His Missus continue to enjoy vacationing.

I wrote about Kaelin's Mi Pueblo  back in 2011 and it still is one of our 'regular' stops.  As always, The Mister and I try to have a small meal before grocery shopping so as not to be tempted to purchase 'impulse' items.  D004219F-2CEB-4F04-A436-4913D4B6BBAD The name of the market has changed slightly, the interior is still kept organized and clean.
D004219F-2CEB-4F04-A436-4913D4B6BBAD A01CD495-0DB0-47C0-9F1D-D73755C06C34 As you walk in, the first kitchen/menu board/ refrigerated grab and go to your right has a clay tannour oven with fresh, hot flatbreads on the counter (El Cajon has the second largest Iraqi community in the USA).   Actually, this Middle Eastern kitchen is shared with the Mexican kitchen- there is a spit of rotating shawarma next to the spit of rotating al pastor.  You order Middle Eastern foods here, are given price stickers and pay at the cash registers while your food is being prepared.1C6D9955-8367-4B28-80E8-8B94DD740D7C The Taqueria/Mexican menu board and cash register is a few feet more into the store, next to the seating area.  We usually purchase an aqua fresca here.
702C04B6-B909-4585-9175-C86A894AB534 On this visit, we chose a package of hummus ($4.99).  Fresh made that morning, great flavors, plenty left over to take home.

561FF3F4-AE33-4EE7-A9D4-EACA1FB9CA5E  04E7DC12-3B50-4354-87AA-F6C0D75679A7 We ordered two beef kababs ($2 each) and I watched as the ground beef, mixed with spices, was placed on long, flat kabab skewers and began cooking on the grill.  Made to order.  The meat was served with a roasted tomato half and a mix of chopped onion and parsley.
561FF3F4-AE33-4EE7-A9D4-EACA1FB9CA5E Here is the loaf of hot tannour bread ($2.25) which was placed in a paper bag after being removed straight from the side of the clay oven. Crisp, flavorful browned bubbles with soft, easy to tear middles.  Great flavor.  It went well with both the hummus and the kabab meat.

A nice light meal with leftovers and beverage for less than $15.

Adalynes Chicken Shack (La Mesa)

mmm-yoso!!! is a food blog which has been around since 2005.  Kirk usually writes the posts, but right now, He and His Missus are vacationing and Cathy is writing.

Back in February, I saw this building going up on University just East of the Kroc Salvation Army Center in La Mesa.3D52C112-49FF-4FF5-A8E2-3CA3159F3CB0 A mental note was made and misplaced.  As fate would have it, The Mister and I were driving by while looking for lunch.  Adalynes opened in March 2022.
3D52C112-49FF-4FF5-A8E2-3CA3159F3CB0 Walk in and step to the right; seating for 40 (along with four big screen televisions) is to the left.  Order and pay- a menu board is above and the open kitchen behind it is quite large.   The "Fish Market" display case was not filled but the price list was available and if you made a purchase and wanted your fish fried, it is an additional $2 per pound.

DEB79525-EE9B-48DD-9A39-42B8F9E871B6 B012C7BF-2FAB-4781-8AC2-1654DEC1B5E9 An appetizer order of calamari ($9.99) included tentacles, not all rings.  We asked for the batter to be 'mild' since there were several selections of spicy side dips.  The calamari was tender, the batter was a proper fry; light and crisp.  This is a large serving.
DEB79525-EE9B-48DD-9A39-42B8F9E871B6 We decided to try the Combo meal ($15.99) of three pieces of chicken strips and six shrimp.  We chose our one side to be sweet potato.  Again, we asked for no spice in the batter.  The shrimp were plump and large, had a very light coating and were nicely fried.  The sweet potato side came in the form of 'tots' and were really good.   The chicken-three large pieces of breast meat with just a light coating which was thin, crisped and tasty.
31B9F518-D3CE-4F9E-8726-3DC3E25B3604 The chicken was not dry at all.
31B9F518-D3CE-4F9E-8726-3DC3E25B3604 These four sauces were brought out with our food (cocktail sauce, "special" sauce (it has jalapeño juice and bits of jalapeño), a BBQ based sauce and a chipotle/smoky sauce.  There's a counter by the tables which has condiment pumps of hot sauce, ranch and catsup.

A nice place that is doing a steady business serving quality fried foods.

Grecian Cafe (again)

mmm-yoso!!! continues to be written by Cathy while Kirk and His Missus continue to enjoy their well earned vacation.

I wrote about Grecian Cafe in January 2019, without mentioning the reason we first stopped here was because of our regular bread run just down the street at Frank's Bakery.  The update to that post is the the corner anchor restaurant here is no longer Pizza Hut Round Table Pizza, but is Pho and Grill International.E3A5B68C-478A-4DA4-B43B-E923F3D064F7 The other update is that this family owned and run restaurant has been here for more than 30 years.
19F6F7D6-8652-48F4-BDBE-F594B74B410C Walk in, order and pay.  There is a menu board above the ordering space in the wall.  Your food is brought out by one of the family members.

C2366B26-AB7D-4D5D-96AA-9322644F0773 As always, we order onion rings ($4.49).  Thick slices of sweet onions, sweet batter, properly crisp fried and not greasy.  This is served with ranch dressing.

Another long time family owned, quality restaurant which survived Covid-19.

Meet Fresh- Treats (Mira Mesa)

mmm-yoso!!! welcomes you back.  Once again, Cathy is writing because, once again, Kirk and His Missus are vacationing.

There are two locations of Meet Fresh, a Taiwanese dessert chain,  in San Diego.  One is in the HMart parking lot in Mira Mesa.  The other is in the strip mall on the SouthEast corner of Clairmont Mesa at the 805 (where there was a Souplantation and still has Niban, a McDonalds and Starbucks).  The menus are the same, the air conditioning is wonderful, the hours are different.  Each location is equidistant from home; we've been to both.45477210-FFFD-4D9E-AFAF-FF96A8378AFB
45477210-FFFD-4D9E-AFAF-FF96A8378AFB Walk in, order and pay.  There is a menu above the register and another full menu on the wall.  There's also a laminated one at the register.4F0E9DA7-CB64-4B51-93F1-0B0EB7BA6B0D

45477210-FFFD-4D9E-AFAF-FF96A8378AFB 174275CD-3155-4FA7-B01F-DAC5DBF3B59E This was a hot fresh milk tea with boba ($6.25)which was ordered out of curiosity.  I liked it.4E37824A-E9EF-4296-A733-5B62418EA805 This is a medium shaved ice ($11.75) alongside an iced lemon black tea ($4.50)
621167E5-65A9-4DE8-977E-9C079CBDFBF5 There are a few choices of shaved ices along with three sizes (the prices are $9.75, $10.75 and $11.75).  Topping combinations are varied and all sound good.  I pointed at one on the laminated menu at the register.  The cylinder shaped Q-mochi, potato balls (sweet potato/taro), jelly and mini mochi balls surrounding the ice cream topped fluffy milk soaked shaved ice made each bite unique.  We ended up taking a lot home.

A nice place for a relaxing treat.
