Odds and Ends – Cumin Chinese Cauliflower (Caulilini), Pliny the Elder at Bay Hill Tavern, and Other “Stuffs”

Just a couple of quick things for today…..

I don't know if you've noticed. Many times, when we're having Chinese food whether at a restaurant or for takeout, we don't order vegetables. The reason for this is that the Missus has a hard time spending maybe over $15 for stir fried veggies. On most occasions we'll have leftovers and then I'll go ahead and stir fry veggies at home. I still have a Big Kahuna, my second one since 2005, this one goes to 65,000 BTU and is great for wok stir fries. 

Or, as in the case of the item below, I'll go ahead and roast something in the air fryer…..sometimes I'll do both at the same time as doing the stir fry can take less than 2 minutes!

Anyway, the latest item was something I just kinda made up. The Missus really likes Caulilini, which is known here as Chinese Cauliflower. It's the type of cauliflower She grew up eating in China. Also known as Baby Cauliflower, it features thin green stems, is a bit sweeter, the florets are more loosely arranged. The Missus grew up eating cauliflower stir fried with tomato. I thought I'd try something interesting, knowing that She enjoys the flavor of cumin in dishes like BO Zi Ran Yang Rou (Cumin Lamb). I thought the P-Cresol-ish cumin would go nicely with cauliflower and it did.

Because the quantity of cauliflower varies, I'll just give you a photo of the ingredients (minus the cauliflower).

There's a certain sequence that I've been using for making this.

Air Fryer Cumin Cauliflower
1 – After rinsing, prepping, and draining the cauliflower pour a few tablespoons of avocado, or any other neutral oil into a mixing bowl. Add cauliflower and combine.
2 – Add Sichuan Peppercorn oil to coat and White Pepper
3 – Add Cumin, Chinese Five Spice, and Granulated Garlic – I used to use fresh shopped garlic but it burned too easy. Mix well.
4 – Taste to make sure the cumin flavor comes thru clearly
5 – Add about a tablespoon of soy sauce and 2 tablespoons of chili crisp, I found that Lau Gan Ma works the best.
6 – Stir and mix well to coat.
7 – Taste and adjust seasonings and add smoked salt.
8 – Roast in 450° Air Fryer for 12-14 minutes.

The time the Missus said She wanted me to grill some Shishamo:

So, I went to grill some veggies and also some of my Local Kine Chashu Chicken for the Missus when She asked me to grill some Shishamo for Her. I thought this kind of strange, since we'd sometimes do it on the Konro, but She wanted it grilled….

So, I prepped some.

Pliny the Elder at Bay Hill Tavern:

Earlier in the week, the Missus wanted some tacos from the Tacos La Chorreada Truck. So JJ and I walked on over, placed my order and decided to head on over to Bay Hill Tavern for a cerveza until my tacos were ready.

I was given the "specials" menu to look over and was pleasantly surprised.

Man, they had Pliny the Elder on tap! When was the last time I had that?

My goodness….it was so good. I'm hoping they still have it the next time I visit. If you plan on dropping by specifically for a PtE, perhaps you may want to call first as I'm sure they'll soon run out – 619-326-8828.

But for some reason, Da' Mokkettes song Palolo Valley Girls, a parody (of a parody) of Frank & Moon Unit Zappa's "Valley Girl" started playing in my head. Arrgh…..I just can't clear it out!

So, just to share the wealth.

Monday Meanderings – Potato Powder Love Noodle (for real) replacing Shann Xi Magic Kitchen in 99 Ranch Market (Balboa), TP Tea coming to Clairemont Town Square, and slicing your own bread at Whole Foods

I'm doing one of these "meanderings" posts today because I just noticed a couple of things over the last two days that I thought interesting.

TP Tea coming to Clairemont Town Square:

I took JJ to an early morning walk and since I like to keep it some variety, I'll often rotate venues. For some reason, I headed on up to Clairemont Town Square early in the morning, and quickly noticed something new.

Looks like the chain TP Tea – which I guess stands for Taiwan Professional Tea, is opening a shop which was the last known location of Isa.Bella, located in the same structure as Main Chick Hot Chicken. For me, this is great, as I always wondered why there weren't more Asian businesses in this huge complex, other than the Panda Express.

Slicing your own bread at Whole Foods:

The Missus wanted some escargot for dinner, so I headed to the Cuisinery to restock. She also wanted some bread and I really didn't want to drive to Secret Sister or even Con Pane. So, I decided to head on over to Whole Foods La Jolla, which is sort of on the way to the Cuisinery. I had gotten the Baby Boule from there before and had it sliced. It's small and not too expensive and would do in a pinch. When I arrived and walked to the bread counter I asked for a Baby Boule and was told it's now self serve….this includes the slicing of the bread!

I've seen these used at Con Pane and Secret Sister….but never thought it would be safe for me to use one!

But I just tried it out. It's not hard at all. The hardest part was getting the sliced bread into a bag!

Potato Powder Love Noodle replacing Shann Xi Magic Kitchen in 99 Ranch Market (Balboa):

Yesterday, the Missus told me She wanted me to make my Cumin Chinese Cauliflower. So, I headed over to 99 Ranch Market on Balboa. I walked past the food court to see what was happening adn noticed that Shann Xi Magic Kitchen was closed. Which I thought was strange.

There was a note posted on the counter…never a good sign….

Which just confirmed what I thought…..well, this location of Shann Xi Magic Kitchen is closed. So, it looks like you'll need to go to the Convoy location if you're craving their food.

And it seems like "Potato Powder Love Noodle" is opening here next month? What a name! I did a quick search and found that PPLN has shops in San Gabriel and City of Industry. Knife cut and potato noodles (thus the name I guess) with various broths.

Man, Shann Xi is one of the "OG" stands in the food court, which has been kind of a revolving door with Dao Xiang recently replacing Mama Lin's, which replaced Saigon 5, and Cluck n Sip replacing Krispy Krunchy Chicken within the last year.

It seems that places are having a hard time staying in business here.

Where on the road were we?

Sorry for the lack of posts…..I guess I needed some time to recover from my last 7 hour drive home the other day. Heck, JJ even handled it better than I did!

Anyway, thought I'd share some photos. We headed out to a region we're somewhat familiar with, but an area we hadn't visited before. The Missus was really interested to see how JJ handled hiking and I must say, he was a champ!

We did five hikes and a couple of walks in three full days! Some of which were over five miles and 800+ foot elevation gain! Yikes!

We looked for hikes that had some cover because JJ doesn't like heat or prolonged direct sunlight and at the elevation we were at….well, that wouldn't be nice! We loved our accommodations, which actually had a decent kitchen, which we'll make sure to remember if we return. The place and the staff were super dog friendly….on one day, I counted 9 pooches staying there.

The Missus's and my favorite parts of our hikes were the beautiful lakes…..

As for JJ….well, there were still quite a few snow banks along the way, which he loved. He would often get the "zoomies"….

And exposure to new situations were quite interesting…..

JJ has always hated water….in fact he used to have a phobia of puddles….yes…for real. So, it was interesting to see him overcome that as he figured out how to cross over streams.

One of us would be on each side of the stream or body of water and cheer him on. We'd let him figure things out for himself and he did well!

He got so good at this hiking thing that he'd get somewhat impatient waiting for me…the slowpoke at times.

Personally, I enjoy taking my time…..well, maybe I'm just old and slow. But there were a couple of stops I really enjoyed.

Right across from our hotel….well, after a good amount of stairs was a large venue with several large restaurants, shops, and a distillery that made cocktails we really enjoyed.

Almost all restaurants had outdoor seating available and were dog friendly; though a couple were still in transition mode from winter to summer and not ready yet. Still, we'd usually get a late lunch and dinner at one of the restaurants. Nothing mind blowing, mind you; but not terrible.

Though by the end of our stay…..we had gotten to the point of doing takeout and eating on our balcony.

mmm-yoso Makes 20 a.k.a. Post #5527

Well, I didn't know that they made our Blog's 20th anniversary a National Holiday! I'm just kidding, happy Memorial Day everyone!

And yes, today our little blog turns 20! Little did I know when I pressed "Publish Now" on our first post on May 26th 2005, that I'd still be doing post 20 years later! Hard to believe at times that it's 5527 post in 7305 days……

So much has happened over the last 20 years….I have been told that Blogging is dead for almost a decade now; but I guess I'm just a bit stubborn. When we started, MySpace was making waves by having more pageviews than Google! And that "four lettered website" had just been established in 2004 as well as Facebook.

I just wanted to do this post to thank all of you for visiting, reading, commenting, the wonderful emails, and recommendations. Without you all…well, I don't think we'd still be doing this. And of course, with co-authors Cathy, Vicky, and the late Ed from Yuma (we miss you so much Ed!), I don't think this blog would still be in existence.

I've always thought of our little blog as a food/travel diary of sorts…it ain't fancy writing, but I still look back on my travel posts, and wistfully smile at those places that I enjoyed dining at that are gone. Over the years I've had the honor of sharing my meals and our travels to 37 countries (well, I'm behind on Ecuador and Australia)….the only reason I know that is being asked how many countries I'd been to while grabbing a cold one a couple of months back. The guy who asked me that was shocked that I didn't know that number. I guess it's some kind of badge of honor or something these days? Ok, well, let's get back to the post, shall we?

As for what the future holds, well who knows? Ever since Typepad was purchased a few years ago and stopped offering new sign-ups functionality has deteriorated. It sometimes takes me 8-12 tries to get a photo to post. I've lost content when saving posts and had to depend on the last "restore content". I know I'll need to move to a WordPress platform, but the biggest issue has been not wanting to lose our 5,000 + posts. I know that the actual posts can be migrated; but the issue for me are the photos. So, perhaps I'll find a solution down the road.

Until then, JJ and I would like to raise our "glass" and thank you all for dropping by! And if you'd like to tell me when you started reading our little blog…well, that might be fun!

Where on the road are we?

I'm sure you've noticed that my posts have been somewhat sporadic, over the last week or so. Well, what's going on is that after four short road trips with JJ, we're off on a two week one right now. On previous road trips I managed to get a couple of posts done beforehand and thought with two in the can, I would have time to do some posts from the road…well, how wrong I am! I did manage a couple, but with the driving, meals, walks, hiking, shopping, and having JJ around well…..you get the picture.

Anyway, it's been quite fun so far.

I designed it so we started in some rather familiar locales.

Finding dog friendly accommodations and restaurants has been interesting. Though, I must say California has many options.

And we were able to get a nice walk in.

We had dinner at our favorite cocktail bar in the city since it was dog friendly and had a nice time.

Then it was off to what is considered to be the most dog friendly town in California. We stayed at the same accommodations as before. I must say, the place is bustling, but mornings and evenings were quite relaxing. There were so many pooches and scenes like this seagull holding up traffic!

We also did a rather well known drive….which we last did over 20 years ago!

It’s San Wo, not Sam Woo, Tasty House Replacing Tealightful Cafe, Itacho Sushi Replacing Mikami, and other “stuffs”…..

Just a couple of things for this Monday.

Itacho Sushi Replacing Mikami:

I saw a sign up on the former location of Mikami Sushi, so I drove on in to take a look.

Looks like another AYCE sushi place is taking the spot.

Tasty House Replacing Tealightful Cafe:

On the same drive I saw another new sign while driving West on Clairemont Mesa. This one in the former location of Tealightful Cafe….I didn't even know they closed. Seems like the owner has been having health issues….

The sign had me wondering if this place would have anything to do with Tasty Noodle House (more on that below), which folks told me had closed. But the Missus and "FOY" Xiāngjiāo both said that based on the Chinese name it's unlikely.

And what about Tasty Noodle House?:

I had heard and been asked if Tasty Noodle House has closed. Even though I https://mmm-yoso.typepad.com/mmmyoso/had a very mediocre visit back in February, the place was doing some good takeout-delivery business when I visited.

On my next foray to Convoy, I dropped by and noticed the doors to the restaurant were open.

But the hand written sign on the door said "Sorry! We Closed".

I then noticed, at the top left of the window, out of direct line of sight, this sign…..

And Finally, It's San Wo, not Sam Woo:

I recently went to the Clairemont Mesa location of 99 Ranch Market….this was actually on the same drive where I noticed Tasty House and the Itacho signs. Since the location on Balboa opened, which is closer to home, I seldom visit the legacy location any more. I quickly noticed a couple of changes….one of which will be in a future post. For some reason, I looked up and I noticed that the sign for Sam Woo BBQ had been "modified".

And now said "San Wo BBQ". What they heck? I had last visited in September of last year and I believe the sign still said "Sam Woo". What the heck is going on? I know that Sam Woo's are kind of a loose conglomeration of places based on a single family. I also know that the owner of the LA location was sentenced to prison for tax evasion, but this was news to me! Again our good friend Xiāngjiāo did tell me it's the same ownership….so I dunno. The Missus said the name in Chinese is the same, they took off the last character, but it's still the same.

Hi, dis is JJ! My daddy said he's too pooped to do a post…maybe he needs one of my bags? I dunno…. It was only 1,300 miles…he getting old I guess!

Anyway, he is sorry about not posting for the last couple of days, but we were on a road trip, my fourth so far. Yeah, I know Daddy is behind on those as well. So I am helping out…..he don't know, you don't need thumbs to use the keyboard!

Anyway, we had a lot of fun.

Sunday Stuffs – Renaming Grim Avenue to “Lucky Lane”, Wagyu Street opens in Ajisen Ramen, and Midnight Skewer coming to Convoy

So, fellow longtime blogger and our good friend "CC" was good enough to share this Instagram Post by Matt, the owner of Tribute Pizza.

It's about a petition to honor the one and only Lucky and change the name of this portion of Grim Avenue to Lucky Lane! You can sign the petition on a link at Tribute's website. I know the passing of Lucky really touched many of us. He was one of a kind and I for one did sign the petition. I usually don't get involved with these sorts of things; but Lucky was special. He touched many, was a fixture, and really, to me at least, was the "heart and soul" of the neighborhood.

Anyway, I'll keep it at that. Thanks for letting me know CC! And we'll be heading to Tribute soon….it's been a while. It's the least we can do as Tribute really lived up to it's name with this beautiful tribute.

Wagyu Street opens in Ajisen Ramen:

I saw this while waiting at the traffic light on the corner of Ruffner and Clairemont Mesa.

Looks like Wagyu street, which has a location in; if I recall, Long Beach,  is sharing the space with Ajisen; featuring bentos, bowls, salads and such.

Not a fan of Ajisen….and I'm not sure Wagyu Street is enough to draw me back. But, in case you're interested.

Midnight Skewer coming to Convoy:

I saw this when I dropped by China Max. It's on the second floor above China Max in Plaza del Sol.

I quizzed the Missus on the name in Chinese and She said it refers to street food stands. Looks like another after hours Chinese drinking and street food place. Wasn't this some kind of dental office before?

COMC – Mad For Cheesecake Revisited, NYE Dinner at Et Voila, Dinner with Friends, and an Update on Zion Market’s Move!

Just doing some cleaning of my photo folders here…so it’s time to C(lear) O(ut the) M(emory) C(ard). Just short posts…

NYE Dinner at Et Voila:

The Missus wanted to something special for JJ’s first New Year, so we decided on going to Et Voila for the NYE dinner. We had NYE dinner there before Covid and they have an small outdoor area with heaters. The one thing being, you can’t make reservations online for that. So, we took JJ and dropped by to make reservations in person. Not wanting to be out on the road too late during the eve, we made reservations for the first seating at 430pm.

We ordered every item available, one of each when there were a choice of two courses.

We didn’t think much of the amuse and the first course and were quite disappointed that they didn’t serve the typical baguette either! Et Voila NYE 02

That “faux” foie gras was very disappointing as it was mushy, metallic-too livery in flavor.

But things turned around with the second course; the Bay Scallop Gratinee.

Dinner with Friends:

I’ve been blessed with having some great friends like Candice, “Yummy Yummy”, and “Xiāng Jiāo”. I’ve even posted on some great meals I’ve had with friends over the years! They are such wonderful folks, thoughtful, kind, generous….

JeffP who I’ve mentioned in several posts and who even shared in doing the One Chip Challenge with me one year is such a person, as is his wonderful bride “LL”. I’ve been honored to get to know them! They are both so kind, fun, and generous. And it was in true display when they invited me out to dinner! At their “special place”. As it’s a small, intimate, setting that’s already pretty darn full, I’m not going to give it away. But since I do use our little blog as a food-travel-personal diary of sorts, I thought I’d just post the photos here.
