PB Poke House, Fish & Things Poke Bar, and Poke Chop. Does PB Now Stand for “Poke Bowl?”

I know I've mentioned trying new places and getting ideas for places when overhearing conversations. A few months ago, I was having coffee and breakfast at a usual neighborhood stop when I overheard two "bro's" chatting about food. Of course that got my attention. One of them kept on saying that PB was the best 'hood for food in town. Of course, where did he live? Right, you got that. Anyway, he mentioned that there were three poke places in PB he frequents and he even gave them in order of preference. Hmmm….you know, with the traffic, crowds, tourists, and let's not even talk about parking, I rarely get to PB. When I do it's a stop at Trader Joe's on Garnet and maybe head up Ingraham to Gelson's or  and perhaps Wayfarer. Though mornings in the "off-season" aren't too bad and I might make a stop….in fact, I'm waiting for things to settle down a bit before giving La Clochette another try (thanks for the rec' Kathy!).

But poke, eh? I had the idea of trying the three places mentioned. Of course, I wasn't going to push the issue. I've had my share of mediocre poke (at places that can't even spell "poke" – thought that's perhaps an indicator) at those "chi-poke" places. I just waited.

And then it happened a couple of months back, I needed to head out to Mission Boulevard…the Mission Beach side. So, I thought I'd just head up Mission and see if I could snag some parking on the street near one of the two places I had in mind. I really wasn't very confident, but guess what, there was street parking right on Mission across the street from….

As I crossed the street, I had a sense of nostalgia overtake me. You see PB Poke House is located here.

Folks who have been in San Diego for a while might recognize the location. Yep, the original location of Da Kine's was upstairs. Man, the memories. I was consulting in San Diego in the late-90's and missing a plate lunch. And at that time Da Kine's was the only show in town. ….

Anyway, back to reality. The shop is fairly small, it has a few tables inside and one outdoors.

The woman working was really friendly. Being more of a old fart basic poke guy, I went with the large Classic Shoyu Poke Bowl ($19.50). My bowl was ready in no time and I headed on home. This looked pretty good. As I opened up the bowl, I decided to set simple overall criteria – if this place was a block or two away, would I get the poke once in a while?

PB Poke House 03  PB Poke House 04  The fish looked not bad. As I looked at the seaweed salad and surimi salad, then had a taste of the poke, I got full on 8th and B "vibes". The fish was of decent quality, fairly tender, no off flavors. Like 8th and B the fish was highly sauced and on the sweeter end of the spectrum. Not sure why they call this "classic" since it's much sweeter than what I get back "home".

The portion size was fairly generous.

PB Poke House 05 PB Poke House 06  It might have been a bit much, but was really not bad at all. What was bad was the brown rice which was severely undercooked and hard. Not good eats.

So, the verdict? I guess if PB Poke House was around the corner I might eat here every so often, after all they have Spam Musubi. It's a bit too sweet and over-sauced for me, but the fish seemed of decent quality and the folks working were really friendly! PB Poke House 07

A couple of weeks later, I decided to see if I could sneak in and find parking at the next place which was right up the street from PB  Poke House. The name of the place……

Fish & Things Poke Bar:

In retrospect, I'm not sure I'd want to have seafood at a place that sells fish and "things"….what kind of things specifically? And after my visit, I did some checking and found that this is a franchise that started in Elk Grove? Just south of Sacramento, not quite the hotbed of fresh seafood in my mind.

Of the three places visited, this was the nicest looking, and had decent indoor and a couple of outdoor tables.

Like the other shops, this was the typical fast-casual set-up.

The menu is pretty large, featuring some cooked dishes, sushi (ahem, rolls that is), and build your own "chi-poke" bowl.

I went with the Classic (of course) Hawaiian, which seemed like shoyu ahi ($20.95).

Fish & Things 05 Fish & Things 06 My first thought when I opened things up was "what's up with the mac nuts?" The half nuts were just too big for this. The shoyu wasn't overly sweet, but was used quite sparingly. The quality of the fish, while not bad, wasn't to my liking. Too much "sugi" – rubbery connective tissue. The rice was cooked nicely….I forgot to ask about brown rice. I might have been traumatized after my visit to PB Poke House.

Fish & Things 07 Fish & THings 08  The portion size seemed on the smallish side, but still isn't bad compared to the "manini" 2 ounce portions I've seen at the chi-poke places.

To me second tier poke. And I'm sorry to say, second tier and raw fish is something I really don't want to eat.

After this, I decided to give it a rest and kinda left things as is. Until recently, when the Missus requested an item from a nearby Patisserie (more on that revisit later). Which just happened to be on the block right next to….

Poke Chop:

Which is another mini chain with several locations and another coming soon in Mission Valley. According to the "surfer bro'" this was the best of the three. I'd been having some luck finding parking in PB and this day was no different as I got a nice spot on Gresham, which would my "escape from PB" via Grand quite easy.

I walked on over and was crossing the street at 11 when the place opens.

By the time I crossed the street and walked in, there were already folks in line ahead of me.

Looking at the menu, it was obvious this was one of those "chi-poke" places. Pick your fish, pick your stuffs, pick your sauce, etc…..

It was interesting listening to what the guys in front of me ordered, lots of salmon and spicy tuna, mayo based sauces, won ton chips……

As for me, well the marinated tuna wasn't ready, and the nice fellow working the front of house suggested I get the tuna, I took a medium bowl ($17.50), with both the Sweet Sesame and Ginger Shoyu on the side. Which is what I got, without all the other "chi-poke" stuffs, getting just ginger, and furikake, along with brown rice.

When I opened things up at home I had a pause.

Poke Chop 05  Poke Chop 06  Good lord, this looked totally like "saku", Carbon Monoxide treated fish. So much sugi, so dry looking, I was kinda not wanting to eat this. I tried a piece and it was mushy, yet chewy, with a metallic tinge. Yikes. 

On the positive side, the brown rice was nutty and tender, but man, that sweet sesame was syrupy and super sweet, the shoyu tasted fine, but even that couldn't hide the quality, or lack thereof of the fish. The ginger-shoyu was fine but could not hide the very low quality of the fish. Egads, it reminded me of the first time I learned about "saku", fish treated with Carbon Monoxide for color and preservation all those years ago.

Well, if you want to go the "chi-poke" route with a large portion of saku fish…well, this is for you. As for me, even if it were right across the street, I would not eat there. But heck, if its your thing have at it.

Honolulu – The Crack Seed Store (Kaimuki), Musubi Cafe Iyasume (Ala Moana), and Other “Stuffs”

**** I hope you don't mind another Hawai'i post. Not a whole lot of food in this one.

On this trip home the Missus really enjoyed Herself. She got some hiking ummm walking (Her definition) and we visited places I hadn't been to in decades. We also managed to stay 2 nights in "town" (Honolulu), which I really enjoyed.

But first, the Missus needed Her Li Hing Mango fix and since we were headed to town there was one place She really loves, it's in my old neighborhood, where I grew up. Located on Koko Head Avenue is the Crack Seed Store, which I included in the post linked above. I was also interested in visiting because I had found out that the original owner, Mr. Young, who BTW, ran the place for over 40 years had retired. Thankfully, he did find new owners, who according to this article are also in the same business and use the same distributors. Mr. Young also shared his "secret" recipes with them so everyone could get the same stuffs they had always enjoyed.

Anyway, we drove up, there was no street parking on Koko Head, but I managed to score some parking in the lot behind the businesses. A guy pulled out of his stall as I was turning in and guess what? He also still had over an hour of parking left on the meter. Double score!

There were several different li hing mango versions, but the Missus zeroed in on the one She likes. Forgot to take a photo of that, but here's a plethora of li hing mui.

Of course the Missus went and opened up the bag and started chowing down on it as we walked to the car.

She said it's just as good as She remembered! Awesome!

We then headed over to Ala Moana Center. We were staying at the Ala Moana Hotel. You know, I'd never stayed there. There was just no way I wanted to stay in Waikiki and I didn't think the Missus would  go for the Pagoda, so Ala Moana Hotel was it. 

Anyway, it was too early to check in, so we went to the mall to check things out. It was Chinese (Lunar) New Year so Ala Moana Center was all decked out.

After which, it seemed like a good time to get something small for lunch. We'd had a big breakfast back in Ewa Beach in the morning.

Thanks to fellow long time blogger Kathy, who now does the fabulous Onolicious Hawaii blog, I found the post on the Lanai, in the location old Shirokiya (we miss you so) store, in her guide to Where to Eat at Ala Moana Center. We enjoyed the Lanai because the places seemed more "local" focused. And there is a location of Musubi Cafe Iyasume there!

And we felt that two musubi would be enough for a very light lunch.

So we got the Avocado-Bacon-Egg-Spam.

The rice was nicely cooked, but in spite of the presence of my favorite canned meat product; the bacon was soggy and rubbery and there wasn't enough  avocado to really make a difference.

We did like the Kimchi and Spam version though. I mean; kimchi….Spam…..

Salty-sour-a bit of spice, say no more. I'm looking forward to having this again.

I had parked on the second floor of Ala Moana Center on the Mahukona Street side where there's the bridge to the hotel. I walked on over and went to see if our room was ready; which it was! Yes!

In another funny moment, the nice young man at the check in counter asked me if I've stayed with them before. I told him no, it was too expensive to stay here when I was young; though I did go to Rumors (a legendary night club in the hotel that closed in 2017) quite a bit in my younger days. He told me, "awesome, you ever heard of the Point After?" I told him I used to go there and Bobby McGee's a lot too. He then told me "my Grandfather used to go to the Point After a lot." Aiyah! Suddenly I'm "Ji-chan"?

Anyway, our room had a decent view.

We had a nice nap, then decided to take a walk before heading out to dinner. We strolled on over to Ala Moana Park for a pre-dinner walk.

As a whole it was pretty mellow on this late afternoon.

Then the strangest thing happened; I heard someone calling my name. I turned around and didn't recognize this older fellow. He identified himself and holy smokes! He was my best friend from Elementary, Intermediate, and High School, thru the mid 90's. He lived a half block from me in Kaimuki! Even though by the time I left the islands I had a new group of friends, I'd still drop by and talk story and stuff. He was the first of us to get a driver's license and used to drive his grandfather's car. We used to go to Keyhole at Ala Moana park, go swim, have some, ahem, liquid refreshment, all that kind of stuff. He still comes here several times a week to walk and still lives in the same Kaimuki house he grew up in. Makes me wonder if I would have been the same had I never left the islands? He caught me up on some of the folks that were in our "group"; some have already passed on. Everyone from that group except me ended up in the trades; painters, refrigeration, sheet metal, it's not a easy life. He still has the same phone number, which I recited from memory. It's been almost three decades and I'm not sure how he recognized me? I'll need to call him when I'm back again.

It was turning out to be an interesting trip.

Chicken Wing Wednesday – Kuljem Chicken & Beer (aka Honeyjam Chicken & Beer, aka JJ Chicken)

Ok, I know you must be tired of all these KFC posts, they seem to be coming in hot and heavy right now, this will be the last one for a while…hopefully, though I do have some revisits in the queue. Based on the crazy pre-opening history of this place, you know I just had to visit. For those who don't remember; originally, back in 2021, this was supposed to be JJ's Chicken, then in August of 2022, the "JJ" sign was gone. Then FOYs Patty (in the comments of that post) and Rena (via email, with an attached photo) notified me that the place was going to be Honeyjam Chicken. I drove on over and posted a photo in October of 2022. Finally, in May of this year Eater posted on the Soft Opening of Honeyjam. I had heard about the place selling out of wings and really didn't want to repeat the BHC thing, so I waited. By the time of my visit, the signage now said "Kuljem"! You gotta love it. Which is basically "Honey" (ggul) and "Jem" (잼) means "fun", so I guess it all fits, right? Whew…..

Not wanting to fight crowds and such, I walked in at 1130, opening time on a Tuesday.

A really nice young man greeted me and asked me if I was ordering for here to to go. I told him I'd be dining in and he led me over to a table and pointed out the QR code for the menu.

I placed my order and once he got things set he came over and introduced himself as John and is one of the owners. He also owns Arteazen, the Boba/Tea shop in the plaza. He was a really friendly guy and I guess I must have a rather generic look because he asked me if we'd met before? Seeing an opening, I asked him about first being JJ's and was told that the sign was a mistake because that's the name of their LLC; his business partner's name is Jin, so "J & J" got it? But what about the Honeyjam "thing"? Well, after being open a bit, they found that with the name Honeyjam, folks were expecting SFC ("Southern Fried Chicken") and waffles, that sort of thing, so they went with the Korean name! Got that? Double whew…..

Anyway, I ordered the wings – Original Crispy (6 piece – $12) and some Kimchi Fried Rice ($16). Not cheap, but it looks like about $2 a wing is the going rate these days? I was graciously brought a glass of water and soon enough my wings arrived. Even before the fried rice. John told me that they double fry the Original Crispy.

Kuljem 04b  Kuljem 05 These were those jumbo sized wings; the batter was really thick and more hard-crunchy than crispy. The seasoning was a good amount of salt and black pepper. The wings were moist, especially the flats, and looked to be of good quality. As whole, just way too much batter for me, but decent wings. It threw the entire proportion off and I really needed that cabbage with dressing and the mul kimchi, which hovered on the sweeter side of things to reset my palate.

What I enjoyed much more than the wings was the Kimchi Fried Rice ($16).

While I do wish they had a Spam option for this, the chicken, which I'm sure they have a lot of was ok. Loved the fried egg with the crisp edges, it was perfect. The rice was wonderfully coated and there was a good amount of crunchy, fermentally sour kimchi in this. This was quite good!

I heard some customers, who came in after me raving about the "Saigon Wings" so I knew I had to make a return visit. I did wait about a month or so, but again returned at the 1130 opening time, this time on a Wednesday. I was greeted once again, this time by John's partner, "Jin", who led me to a table and the ensuing QR code drill. And brought me a glass of H2O.

This time I decided on the Saigon Wings (6 – $12). 

Kuljem 09 Kuljem 10   The batter for this seemed a bit different; it was thinner, more lacquered, but still on the crunchy end of the spectrum. The menu says "aromatic and slightly spicy", I'd go with barely spicy and teeth rattling sweet and sticky. The wings were, as before moist and tender, but this was too much for me. I ended up needing the cabbage a mul kimchi to recover! Also, I had to request extra napkins, because of that sticky sauce. Perhaps they'll stock some wipes in the future?

Really like the two owners who are very friendly and quite chatty. The wings are good quality, though it's a bit too crunchy for me. Funny thing is; I'll definitely get the kimchi fried rice. Now if they start offering a Spam option, well I'd be there for sure!

What’s the Missus Craving? Moroheiya (GreeNoodle) Noodle Soba Style

This one is interesting. The Missus wanted zaru soba…well, without the soba! Figure that one out? The Missus enjoys the Tsuyu, the daikon oroshi, wasabi, and grated ginger, but just does not like the flavor and texture of buckwheat noodles! Hmmm……so, funny thing how things just pop back up. A couple of years back, we had a tasting of GreeNoodles at Mitsuwa. The reason that we were interested was that the noodles were made with "Moroheiya", also known as Mulukhiyah, but really know to us as Molokhia, a green veggie we first encountered and enjoyed in Tunisia. Funny thing, we next saw Molokhia available for purchase at Nijiya of all places. I remember being told how healthy Molokhia is. But beyond that, we loved the slightly bitter-vegetal flavor. And the Missus enjoyed how those dried noodles tasted. Anyway, looking for an alternative to soba, I decided to get a couple of packages of GreeNoodle from Tokyo Central (aka Marukai). Of course I wasn't getting the stuff with those powdered soup packets (there's miso, tum yum, yakisoba, etc…). I was just getting a package of dried noodles – $1.99 each.

Supposedly a good amount of fiber, the noodles aren't fried, a good source of potassium, beta carotene, manganese, antioxidants, blah, blah, blah…..

The main thing is; would the Missus enjoy this? And guess what, She loves it! It's quite simple. I just boil for about 3 minutes, rinse, then put into ice water to chill, then drain. I serve it just like zaru soba. It's so refreshing!

I've made this five times over the last sweltering two weeks. I guess it's a fixture now. Though I can tell the Missus is getting tired of it because She's requested a "Ma Jiang Mian"; cold sesame noodle version. Go figure.

You know, with all the hot weather, I haven't been making anything really complex. Though, it's been quite interesting. This is another favorite of the Missus. It's based on a dish from our favorite Sichuan restaurant in Paris. So, I've made this like four times already.

Still, I thought you might be interested in these Moroheiya Noodles; which have a better texture, taste, and is much more healthy than that instant ramen you're eating. Plus, I thought it interesting how this plant, which supposedly originated in Ancient Egypt, that we first tasted in Tunisia, and then saw for sale at Nijiya, can be found in noodle form!

Midweek Meanderings – Looks like Zen Curry is Becoming Curry Club, Fish With You coming to Convoy, New Owners for Tsuruhashi, and Other Stuffs

Well, this one has been a mystery for a while. I recall first seeing the "temporarily closed" sign back in July 2023. So, just for kicks I went into the parking lot which also houses Katsu Cafe and Yuk Dae Jang and guess what? The Zen Curry sign is gone!

Fish With You coming to Convoy:

Sometimes just waiting to post something works out right. After my lunch at Izakaya Sakura I took a walk around the strip mall to see what was going on. I quickly noticed that Shen Tan BBQ had closed.

The Change of Ownership sign indicated something named Wei's Fish was taking its place.

Fast forward a week and the the Eater did a post. Looks like this will be part of chain from Beijing whose name in the US is Fish With You. When I showed the Missus the website She got quite excited. You know how much She loves Suan Cai, right? Well, this chain specializes in Suan Cai Yu. Basically, boiled fish with pickled cabbage, which the Missus loves. 

It's going to be interesting!

My food friend "CY" asked me if I was attending the San Diego Taiwanese Festival? Huh? You know how much the Missus and I love Taiwan!

After checking out the link and additional info from a few sources, I found that it's more of a Cultural Festival brought to you by Taiwanese American Professionals (TAP), then a food festival, but it still looks like fun. I'm not sure if you know, but one of San Diego's Sister Cities is Taichung. It is taking place at Torrey Hills Park, 4260 Calle Mejillones from 2pm to 5pm this Saturday, August 3rd. I believe you need to RSVP to attend.

Monday Meanderings – Juewei Coming to Convoy, SotBBQ Replacing Olleh Sushi, and Recently Consumed

We're recently back from yet another Road Trip and I needed to do my rounds this past weekend. Driving around Kearny Mesa I noticed a few new places.

Juewei Coming to Convoy:

I actually drove into Plaza del Sol on Convoy to see what was going on with China Max and noticed a new sign. Right next to Bonchon was this signage.

Whoa, could it actually be? We had been to Jue Wei Kitchen in San Gabriel for the duck neck, pig's feet, etc…….

So, just before typing this up I dropped by Eater San Diego and according to their post, it is true. Get ready for some spicy duck neck, pig ears, tripe, and all kinds of braised goodies!

SotBBQ Replacing Olleh Sushi:

While driving East on Clairemont Mesa Boulevard, I noticed another new sign. This one for something called SotBBQ? This is in the plaza where the original location of Menya Ultra is located.

Less than two years ago Olleh Sushi replaced Old House Hot Pot, and before that it was Uniboil, which replaced Beauty Hunan, which replaced Szechuan Taste! Man, is this location cursed or what?

Well, we'll see how this works out.

And finally…….

Man, this past weekend was a hot one, huh?

I really didn't want to work too hard at cooking and with the post 4th of July folks still crowding things….man, was the Little Italy Mercato packed. I couldn't find any parking at my usual spots and had to actually get metered parking!

Anyway, just to get a bit silly here, we had stuff from the farmers market; great tomatoes from Andrew at Indian Summer Farms, Fuerte Avocados from another stand. We had gotten a nice sourdough loaf from Erick Schat's Bakery in Bishop, perfect for sandwiches, and so forth…..

For a light lunch I made an Avocado – Tomato Toast, with lardons of bacon and feta…..

And for lunch yesterday, it was a Watermelon-Bacon-Feta Salad with tomato, basil, cilantro micro greens, and butter lettuce.

Midweek Meanderings – Shaka Coffee (Balboa) Closes, the Meaning of “Meat Day”, and a Pandemic Flashback

Just a couple of odd and ends for "hump day".

Shaka Coffee on Balboa Closes:

I recently did some takeout from Noble Chef. I parked and noticed the coffee stand in the strip mall had closed.

The Meaning of "Meat Day":

So, I did a quick stop at Nijiya for "Meat Day" which is the 29th of the month.

A customer looking at some pork asked her companion why meat day was always on the 29th. Which got me thinking…..I hadn't even thought about the reason.

And then it came to me; 29 in Japanese is something like "ni-kyu/ku" if I recall, and I'm sure you know that "meat" in Japanese is "niku" (肉). Duh, how many years have I been going on meat day and didn't realize this.  I guess I'm not the "sharpest knife in the drawer".

Having a Pandemic Flashback:

Well, this one has nothing to do with food or drink. I made a quick run to our local Rite Aid on the way home today. I walked in and went to the section with cleaners and couldn't believe my eyes.

I immediately had flashbacks to March of 2020! I did find what I needed and went to the cashier. I asked him what was going on, was this location of Rite Aid closing? He told me it's just a "supply issue." Well no kidding.

Now to make this even more interesting; I'm wondering if he was actually an employee of Rite Aid or perhaps an apparition? Well, because when I looked at my receipt…..

mmm-yoso makes 19!

As is my usual weekend morning routine, I dropped by regular weekend coffee stop. Seeing that it was pretty quiet, strange for a Sunday, I decided to actually get a veggie bagel for breakfast and have a seat.

When my breakfast arrived I looked at my phone and sheesh! I suddenly realized that our little blog made 19! Aiyah….just like last year, the date totally slipped my mind! So you'll just have a veggie bagel photo for this post!

The years sure have flown by and not even in my wildest dreams could I have imagined that we'd still have our eating and traveling "diary" of sorts around 5263 posts later!

I'm certain that we wouldn't be if not for all the wonderful comments (50,051 of them!), emails, and recommendations over the years. I humbly thank you for all the visits and hopefully next year I'll be more on top of things!

Where in the world were we?

Whew, ever had a trip that was so amazing that time flew by and having done so much, when thinking an experience that happened just a few days ago it seemed like weeks ago? Well, we're back from that amazing trip. In spite of the combination of flight time and layovers taking 15 hours plus each way, this one was one of those once-in-a lifetime experiences, from the time we landed in the country's capital at 9300 feet we were entranced.

The diversity is amazing. In fact, there are 4 different geographical regions in this fairly small country!

Another interesting fact, the Country is named for the imaginary line that separates the Northern and Southern Hemisphere and takes great pride in being called the "middle of the world".

And yet, things really got even more incredible when we did our cruise. To an archipelago I had always dreamed of exploring. And now have a better understanding of how a famous Naturalist became enchanted and inspired by his visit here when still a young man. And whose most well-known publication is inextricably linked to the islands.

Our 7-day cruise explored the Northern portion of the archipelago and in all we visited 7 islands. And amazingly, the terrain of each one was different.

And the Captain even took us on a spur of the moment visit to see nature in action as well!

There are strict rules in place on the islands, thus many creatures displayed no fear of hoo-mans.

You are what you eat? Chapulines……

Our good friend "Alle" just got back from Mexico and had some great omiyagi for us. Among the goodies was some Chapulines. She told me they were from Mercado de San Juan and were among the best she's ever had. We had come to really enjoy chapulines  during our time visiting Oaxaca and nothing here we've gotten here in the states compares.

In case you don't know what chapulines is, here's the Wikipedia page. It's basically roasted grasshopper and has a smoky, almost shrimpy flavor, with a crunchy texture.

Man, these were so good!

The Missus was really enjoying this with Her avocado toast or on eggs or with some Mezcal, but She wanted to have these for brunch.

So, we headed on over to Carnival Market and got some of the house made chicharron.
