Tappi’s Cafe (Rancho San Diego)

mmm-yoso!!! is a food blog.  Cathy has a post to write today while Kirk is just not able to write much about food.

So, this is another one of our "Oh, Look!"/unplanned finds.  The Mister and I were going to shop at the Ralphs in Rancho San Diego and, as always, looking for a place to get a light lunch so we would not walk in and make excessive food purchases.  Right across the parking lot… IMG_9806
IMG_9805 The small signage with an interesting font was intriguing.  Tappi's opened in October 2022.
IMG_4125 The menu, more intriguing.  There were South of the Border and Mediterranean categories and some items with Japanese names, along with a good breakfast menu, (which has Japanese souffle pancakes as well as German and Ube pancakes available).  Fusion? Con-fusion?  Simply good food?
IMG_9794 We asked what the 'Soup of the Day' was.  The answer was both tomato and broccoli cheese. Yes! One of each, please.

One size ($5 each), quite large.  The tomato 'soup' was extremely thick, filled with seeds from tomatoes and flavors of bell peppers, onion, maybe cumin.  It did not need any additional seasoning.  At some point, we determined it must be the sauce used for the shakshuka from the menu and were very happy.  The broccoli cheese had great flavor.  It was a thin soup, definitely home made and filled with not-mushy, not-crisp/raw broccoli.  Also very good.  IMG_4127 We decided to try the Khachapuri with kielbasa ($12).  Plenty of cheese. filling fresh made crusty chewy bread, thin slices of a garlic-y kielbasa.  A sizable meal (we took two slices home).
IMG_9799 I had seen Kunafa  (crunchy, sweet, cheesy, creamy) at the bottom of the menu and knew I was going to order it.  Our nice waitress said they were 'trying something new' and offering the kunafa as a sandwich for $11 (the large piece of kunafa by itself is $10).IMG_9804 Yes.  The 'bread' is a sweetbread- an eggy, cardamom flavored, sesame seed topped delight.  Separately or together, each bite was wonderful.   We did take half of this home, too, to have with coffee.

We will be trying more of the menu, soon.

The Empanada Spot (Chula Vista)

Thank you for stopping to read this food blog, mmm-yoso!!!  Cathy is writing the post today; Kirk is busy with other things.

A few weeks ago, there was some time for cc and I to meet up and have a little food adventure.  One of the 'new to me' spots was here:

70794089835__806FB569-8EA5-412A-8A63-19791229CC63 Located the the mall on the South East corner of Third Avenue at Oxford in the Castle Park area, The Empanada Spot opened in April 2021.
IMG_9547 Step inside, order and pay and your empanada(s) will be cooked fresh to order.
IMG_9549 cc and I chose four savory flavors (there are dessert/sweet flavors available, but neither of us wanted any; we had plans). The price is $4 each.
IMG_9551 Soon, a tray with freshly fried, piping hot empanadas and accompanying salsas were brought out to us.

IMG_9552 Top left, The OG (a sort of fancy 'picadillo'-(finely chopped marinated steak, tomato sauce, potato) filling with or without olives).  Bottom left, Rajas (poblano peppers with corn, onion and cheese).   Top right, Chicharron (pork rinds in a red sauce and refried beans).  Bottom right, Shrimp and Cheese (shrimp, mozzarella, onion and bell pepper).

Each of these had an excellent, well fried crust and fresh fillings.  Of course I first tried a bite of each, plain and then with the various salsas, which were also bright tasting/very fresh and very complimentary to the fillings.  If I had to choose, I did like the rajas a bit more than the others…but I was very happy with each of these and happy to not have to choose only two flavors.  If you come here, bring someone so you can share.  The amount of food, essentially two whole empanadas, was more than enough for a meal.

Time to bring The Mister here to see which flavors he likes!

The Empanada Spot 1223 Third Ave, C1 Chula Vista, CA 91911 (619) 948-9412 Open daily 10a.m.-8 p.m.

Big Cheech’s (Chicken, Waffles and Sliders)(Scripps Ranch)

Sadly, Big Cheech’s has closed

mmm-yoso!!! is back to being written by Cathy, while Kirk goes back to doing other things.

As we were leaving Todo Sushi in April, I saw cars waiting at a (new location to me) Starbucks drive through and this building, just on the opposite side of Carroll Canyon.  We drove in, but it wasn't yet open for business.  There were some vinyl graphics of breakfast and lunch sliders on the front windows and doors.IMG_8846 We recently were back in the area and stopped in.
IMG_8826 I did not get a photo of the menu, but this link to the online ordering will show you the current offerings and prices. (Breakfast is mentioned on the website as being available from 7-11 a.m., but the restaurant opens at 10 and no breakfast sliders can be ordered from the online menu)
IMG_8828 Of course we had to try a combo: Two chicken tenders, waffle, fries and a drink ($13.99).

Didn't want to try any 'spicy' flavor chicken nor grilled chicken.  The chicken tenders were quite large and moist with a pleasant, lightly crisp, lightly flavored breading (it wasn't a batter that stayed adhered to the chicken).  The fries were very thin and therefore crisp; a good and different fry.  The waffle was made with a flavored batter..cinnamon-vanilla..but it was just a hint of flavor.  Crisp exterior and fluffy interior.  The combination of flavors and textures was 'proper'. IMG_8840 I was curious about the falafel slider ($4.99)
IMG_8844 A fresh made falafel patty with tahini, lettuce, tomato and a pickle on a toasted eggy bun.  I really liked this.

IMG_8837 We also ordered a House Salad ($6.99).  Mixed greens, cheese, onion, grape tomatoes and cucumbers.  We asked for ranch dressing, which was standard and good.

So far, we like the food here.  A good place to stop.

Barrio Donas Opens in Old Town and Phuong Nga Restarts Dining In

**** Barrio Donas has closed their Old Town location

I recently saw the banner up for Barrio Donas in Old Town when dining at El Cata (post coming up). I had been waiting for the shop to finally open in the Old Town Urban Market. I decided to check the place out the following weekend. Of course I went early, this location of Barrio Donas opens at 9, so I could find some parking.

The shop is in a nice bright stall in the market.

IMG_9164

Still, the young lady was still putting things out and told me if could wait another 10-15 minutes. So, I decided to take a nice stroll in Old Town. Which I think is a pretty nice when it isn’t over run with crowds.

IMG_9159

As I walked past the Church of the Immaculate Conception, I realized that I had never taken a look in the church. It was before the daily mass times, so I took a quick peek in.

IMG_9161

I think I’ll drop by for a longer visit one of these days.

Looking across the street, I noticed that the long standing O’Hungry’s/Hungry’s had closed!

IMG_9163

Man, I think the place had been around for almost 50 years? Quite sad…..

When I returned to Barrio Donas, half of the stock was up.

IMG_9165

By the size of the shop, I knew that I wouldn’t be getting tortas like A la Mexicana which I enjoy so much. So, I picked out something on lower end of the sweet scale; the Horchata Donut.

Now, I could have had a seat in the peaceful patio area, which would have been great. But, since things were so quiet on this morning, I decided to head on over to one of my favorite places in the area; Heritage Park.

IMG_9168

I’m not sure if it’s generally known.

But if you head to the right of Christian House, you’ll find a short trail.

IMG_9174

IMG_9169

IMG_9170

It’s not difficult; heck I did it with a coffee and donut in hand. Just don’t fall on any of the cactus……that might not be very enjoyable.

Soon enough you’ll see a bench. There’s even a trash can there.

IMG_9173

It was so serene on this overcast morning.

IMG_9171

And was a nice place to have a pastry or breakfast of your choice. In this case the Horchata Donut.

IMG_9167

And enjoy the “best seat in the house”.

Bun Rieu from Phuong Nga has been a takeout staple for us the last couple of years. And on last Sunday, the Missus requested Her Bun Rieu fix so I drove on over.

IMG_9179

Since the start of the pandemic, Phuong Nga has only been doing takeout. And in the last six month or so, the days that Bun Rieu was available had shrunk. At last check it was only available on Friday, Saturday, and Sundays.

IMG_9178

And I’ve visited on a couple of weekends when they just didn’t have any Bun Rieu. On this day I walked on in and the young lady, the owner’s daughter I presume, smiled at me and said, “we have Bun Rieu every day now!”

And then she pointed over to the former dining area which was covered with supplies. There were now four tables clear.

IMG_9176

She told me “we now have enough staff and can open dining in and make bun rieu everyday”. Good for them!

IMG_9180

I did still get my bun rieu to go though. When my order was ready, “Mom” brought it out to me. She then shook my hand and told me something in Vietnamese. Her daughter translated, “she said thank you very much for helping us stay in business.” Whoa, I never thought she even knew who I was. Somehow I was deeply touched by this. It made my weekend.

Chen Golden Palace (El Cajon) (Chinese Cuisine)

mmm-yoso!!! is a food blog, written by friends.  Today, it's Cathy's turn to post.

Since the onset of Covid-19, The Mister and I have made an effort to patronize local dining establishments.  While doing so, I noticed a pattern arising: the outside signage.

IMG_8754 Can't get much more generic than seeing something like this.

We had also stopped here (Thai Food) in 2021 and then here (Chinese Fast Food) in 2022, finding some great meals.  Rarely do we 'research' where we are going to eat; we just drive and stop.   There is plenty of common/all inclusive outdoor  signage out there.  Each restaurant does have a formal name.  Chen Golden Palace, located on 2nd Street just south of I-8 in El Cajon, has Yelp reviews starting in 2010.  We've passed it a few hundred times.  Finally we stopped.
IMG_8730IMG_8730IMG_8732IMG_8732IMG_8734IMG_8734 Sure, you could walk up and grab a menu…but walking up and reading the walls can be more fun.
IMG_8729
70554401045__E98EFC4C-333F-4CF4-995A-2F7C8E7A4144 Walk to the corner, order and pay.  Have a seat.IMG_8736 Condiments are brought out and you can hear the sounds of chopping and stir fry happening in the kitchen.
IMG_8738 Soon, a large bowl of Wor Won Ton Soup ($11.99) was brought out.  Chicken, shrimp and pork filled won tons (dumpling sized) along with a plethora of fresh vegetables made this a great meal in itself.
IMG_3775 Every vegetable was fresh and crisp.  The shrimp were plump, chicken pieces were moist and quite large and the dumplings/won ton were flavor filled.

IMG_8746 Since this was a first visit, I had to order the Egg Foo Young ($12.99).  The chef here had yet another unique way of preparation.
70554237697__1127C231-ACE6-4B86-A32B-69D20CB30586IMG_8748 The patties were batter dipped and fried to a crisp brown color, not filled with bean sprouts but instead, cabbage.  Topped with the chicken (you could also order pork or shrimp EFY), ubiquitous peas and carrots and a good (not too salty) gravy, all flavors and textures remained bright throughout the meal.

We will return.  What a great neighborhood place!

Matcha Cafe Maiko

Thanks for dropping in to read mmm-yoso!!!, a food blog, in the midst of this three day weekend.  Cathy is writing today.

Summer is almost here, indicated by our "June Gloom", when overcast skies cover the coastline until early afternoon daily.

IMG_8539 Lately, The Mister and I are making an effort to stop and enjoy some sort of 'treat' after lunch and the Matcha Cafe Maiko has been on our radar.  The flavor of matcha-the finely ground powder of specially processed green tea leaves ("Specially processed" means shade grown for about three weeks before harvest) is unique/ has a strong tannin note and the tea powder has more caffeine than sun-grown leaves.   The powder is consumed as a suspension in water or milk, not steeped as a tea leaf is consumed.
IMG_8547 Walk up, order and pay (no cash; cards only) and your order is prepared and your number called out.
IMG_9358

IMG_8544 The menu boards are straightforward.  There are pastries also available to purchase as well as a few items made in the kitchen (bubble waffles, Basque burnt cheesecakes).  We are here for the matcha.
IMG_8548 A Matcha Frappe (premium matcha blended with ice) and topped with whipped cream ($8) is filled with matcha flavors- a sweet nuttiness, along with a grassy note as well as some slight tannin bitterness..a flavor explosion which is satisfying.
IMG_4023 A matcha affogato ($8.90)- an excellent coffee blended with premium matcha and topped with a soft serve swirl of matcha and yuzu ice creams (there are four soft serve ice cream flavors offered daily).  We added a waffle cone ($1.50) just because.  Multiple flavors and textures.  An excellent bit of dessert.

Quality in flavor and presentation and a good place to stop and relax.   Soo was here last year!

Panini Kabob Grill (Mission Valley)

mmm-yoso!!! welcomes you back to our little blog.  Cathy is writing todays post, while Kirk is enjoying the start to a three day weekend.

As you know, I do not 'regift' any gifts received, including gift cards.  I have one particular client (who knows that I write on this blog) and the random gift cards received from him indicate places he would like to see me write about.  PKG is a Southern California chain advertising itself as a  "True Scratch Kitchen".  Established in 1997 in Corona Del Mar, this chain only recently (since Covid-19) has expanded into San Diego, with locations in Mission Valley, Carlsbad, Carmel Valley and soon, University City. IMG_8878 The location in Mission Valley, across the parking lot from the Trader Joe's (at the Northwest corner of Interstate 8 and  Mission Center Road), inside the former Fuddruckers, is closest to home, so we stopped here for lunch.
IMG_8874 Clean and organized, with indoor and outdoor seating, it is spacious. Link to menu (I forgot to take photos)
70613491628__72A40E07-BB09-471E-9941-542E502BBE6B IMG_8862 I decided to try a cup of the Green Lentil Soup ($3.99)-wow! Made with organic lentils, tomato, garlic, carrot, onion, parsley, mint and a vegetable broth, this was a *wonderful* version!  All flavors can be tasted, even the mint.  I definitely will get this again.
70613495202__C9ABBBDD-BC56-45BF-AB71-7F2B1E692A68IMG_8864 I chose the Falafel Appetizer plate ($9.99) as my main dish.  Again-wow! The falafel are made with fresh ground garbanzo beans and various herbs, lightly fried so there is a crisp crust and flavorful fluffy interior.  It's served with hummus (also fresh made with garlic and lemon juice) and tzatziki (made with yogurt, cucumber, dill, parsley, mint and garlic) and grilled pieces of pita.  So fresh and filled with flavors, plenty for a meal or to share.
IMG_8871 The Chicken Brie Panini comes with a choice of standard salads or soup for $13.99, but you can choose the strawberry date salad for an additional $1.99…and The Mister did just that.
IMG_8866 IMG_8867 The sandwich is on grilled artisan bread, made with chicken tenders, tomato, basil and Brie.  It is a large, tasty sandwich.
IMG_8869 The strawberry date salad is so very flavorful!  Mixed greens and strawberries are tossed with candied walnuts, chopped medjool dates and Gorgonzola.  This 'side' portion was more than enough for us to share and experience the flavors and freshness.

We will be back to try more of the menu.  The food here is is quality.

Soo has been here, too!

The Grill At Willowbrook (Lakeside)

mmm-yoso!!!, a food blog, is being written by Cathy, who has some free time.  Kirk is busy.

If you happen to be in Lakeside, near the 67  (the Lakeside border is quite a distance along the 8) and on Riverside Drive, you might notice this sign between two Manufactured Home Parks on the East side of the street.  Turn in. IMG_9623

IMG_9087 Park in the fairly large parking lot in front of this building and step inside.  It's open to the public.  The Pro Shop is to the left, the restaurant to the right and straight ahead is the Nine Hole Golf Course, which opened in 1955 and was re-designed in 1981.

IMG_9086  It's a challenging course that you get to walk twice.
IMG_3900 The restaurant has seating inside and outdoors.  Menus are on each table, in the condiment rack.  Many people walk in to 'Grab and Go' food and beverages for the course, or just to take home.  A local place.
70810163052__4F797DBB-8F78-4AF2-A833-F1DCBFD3352C Breakfast here is pretty basic.  Coffee is $1.86.  It's a good coffee.
IMG_9614 IMG_9618 The Meat Lovers Omelette was listed on the black board as a special this day ($12.95)  and was made with three eggs, bacon, ham and sausage and topped with cheddar.  Quite large.  It was accompanied by toast and fried potato squares.  A very tasty and filling breakfast.
IMG_9616 The French Toast Combo ($12.75) was just the right size for me- one slice of thick French Toast: crisp on the exterior; fluffy interior.  It was served with two eggs (poached) and a choice of two bacon, two link sausage or one sausage patty- which was excellent in flavor.
IMG_9057 IMG_3904 We came back for lunch one Friday, hoping to try the Friday ONLY Special of Fish & Chips, but the fryer would not be ready until about 1 p.m..
IMG_9063 IMG_9064 The Chowder of Clam- we each had a cup (the photo is deceptive; it's a deep cup and filled with many clam pieces, potato and celery).  An excellent New England style clam chowder.
IMG_9070 I had ordered a half sandwich and soup ($10.50) and the sandwich was tuna salad-mostly tuna, very light mayonnaise and great quality-on toasted rye with lettuce and tomato and a pickle spear.  Quite enough food.
IMG_9074IMG_9076 The Mister chose the Grilled Fish Plate ($15.95).  Seasoned white fish served with rice pilaf and mixed "Normandy" vegetables.  This was a very unexpectedly great meal!  A very large, thick piece of fish, nicely char-grilled and kind of fancy.

A great restaurant.

Circling Back to Talavera Azul

After a tumultuous couple of eating years; it seems that the Missus and I are slowly, carefully, treading back to dining out. And one recent evening, the Missus requested a revisit to Talavera Azul. She was craving the menudo rojo there. It's seems that Talavera Azul was a breakfast favorite for us for a blink of an eye. It's hard to believe that our last visit there was over four-and-a-half years ago! I guess all those trips to Mexico and the pandemic put a damper on things.

So, to right our course, we decided to head on down to Talavera Azul on a recent Sunday morning. We arrived 10 minutes before the 8am opening.

T Azul Rev 01

We went and stood at the door. At about 5 till, what seemed like a mob of people got out of their cars and former a line behind us. I guess this is SOP here….at five to the line forms? A minute later one of the women came out and guided us in party by party. We took a window table.

T Azul Rev 02

We were going to order our old favorites here; the Missus got the Menudo Rojo ($14) which is still only served on weekends and I tried to order the Machaca Sonora, but was told they were out of it. So, I went with the Machaca Ranchera ($12.50 + $4 for two eggs) and of course some Cafe de Olla.

T Azul Rev 03

I like the version here; not overly sweet, with just enough cinnamon.

Soon enough things started arriving at our table.

T Azul Rev 04

The Missus just loves fragrant Mexican oregano. And we both enjoyed the smoky heat of the chipotle salsa.

T Azul Rev 05

Our food arrived in tandem, along with some corn tortillas.

T Azul Rev 06  T Azul Rev 07 The eggs were nice and runny, though it needed salt. The country style potatoes were on the dry side, though I did like the beans. The shredded beef which in this case was stir fried with red and green peppers, onions, and a scant bit of tomato were fine; though I prefer the more salty, beefy, toothsome, and intense flavor of the Machaca Sonora.

T Azul Rev 08

The Missus's Menudo was a mixed bag.

T Azul Rev 09

It lacked the richness and spice of what we'd had here before. It also needed a good bit of salt. And of course, the Missus laid it on with the oregano and lime. What was really good was the tripe, which had been cooked to an almost buttery texture.

Service was nice as always; though things were perhaps not as good as what we recalled in the days "BC" (before Covid). Though I'm sure that if Talavera Azul was in our neighborhood we'd visit every so often. These days, a 20 mile drive seems a bit long for us.

Sunday Stuffs, the Sign but “No Sign” (of life) Issue – Honeyjam Chicken & Beer, Hanzuyu Ramen, and Spicy Lao Kitchen. And Current Problems with Photos

Just a couple of things for a quiet Sunday.

It seems that places are taking longer than ever to open these days. I won't pretend to understand the issues, obstacles, and effort places must take to open…..and while we do appreciate great places to eat opening, sometimes….when the wait is so long; it can be somewhat discouraging.

Case in point, back in fall of 2021, there was a sign for a place named JJ Chicken that was going to open in Renaissance Towne Center. Fast forward to October of 2022, thanks to "FOYs" Patty and Rena, I found that JJ was no longer in the spot, but a place named Honeyjam Chicken was taking its place. Fast forward to June of 2023 and we're still waiting.

IMG_9081

Patty had asked me if I knew anything….but sorry, I'm not an "insider", but perhaps a reader of our blog might know.

I'm hoping they open soon.

8895 Towne Centre Dr.
San Diego, CA 92122

And……in the same strip mall I recall seeing the sign for Hanyuzu Ramen. That was in August of 2022. This is what it looks like now.

**** Well, it now looks like this location will be Ujin Ramen?

IMG_9083

Aaaand, the one place I've gotten a couple of emails on; Spicy Lao Kitchen, well I first saw the sign in March of 2022. From what I read back in 2022 this place was supposed to open in "Early 2022".  But of course, here we are in summer of 2023.

IMG_9185

Several folks have asked me if this place is going to open. As far as I know, the folks who own the jerky shop in the strip mall are still intent on opening this place.

5375 Kearney Villa Rd.
San Diego, CA 92123

Life sure has changed over the last 3 years. I have been told about the challenges with getting staff and supplies. I'm not sure, and hope that it is not, the how things proceed from here.

And finally…….

Are you having issues with photos displaying? Well, for several months, Typepad has been having a problem with their image server. I've tried to be very patient with the issue and have had a ticket open for weeks. But, what I've had to do was send them a link and proof every time an issue occurred. Sigh………

Anyway, I finally did the "Twitter thing" and asked about he issue. And here's the response.

IMG_9121

So, my apologies. I understand that there's a point in which I need to consider various "options". Still, we have over 5,000 posts…….I don't want to lose that. I thank you for your patience……

Have a great week!
