Revisits – Barrio Donas and Pho Hoa Huong

I guess if you've been reading long enough you'd have noticed by now that I'm just not a pancakes and French toast for breakfast kinda guy, right? Here are a couple more weekend breakfast stops.

Barrio Donas:

One morning when the Missus had to work; I decided to head into the office to catch up on a few things. On the way up, I decided to take a short detour to see how Barrio Donas was doing. The place was pretty busy for just past 7am on a Sunday morning.

I still can't get over the rather modern; hipster-ish look of the place; such a change from when it was Best Donuts.

B Donas Rev 01

I got my usual breakfast torta; the A la Mexicana.

B Donas Rev 02 B Donas Rev 03On the good side; the light and airy bolillo roll was still warm as I opened up the sandwich. These days; it seems that there's a lot less salsa and spice, and much more cheese. It's not quite the sandwich that I really used to enjoy….it seems a bit out of balance, a milder and tamer version.

The great thing about doing this blog for so long…..here's the A la Mexicana from Best Donuts back in March of 2017.

IMG_2608

Nice acidity and brightness from the salsa, decent heat from the jalapenos, the earthy-nutty-savory flavor of the beans, not too much cheese, mixed with eggs. Doesn't that one look better? It was also $4.99 then; now, while it's not a big deal, it's $6.50. They gotta pay for all the renovations I guess.

Pho Hoa Huong:

On may to do my usual "rounds" on a Saturday morning, I was too early for my next set of stops; Nijiya, H Mart, and Marukai, so I decided to grab some breakfast…..my kind of breakfast. I had kind of enjoyed my last visit to the "fastest pho in the west" and decided to drop by.

Like I mentioned in my last post; the former perfunctory, hovering over you waiting for your order, has been replaced with a more relaxed…..though I can't really call it friendly, atmosphere. What hasn't changed was how quickly the pho hit my table after I ordered it. I set my stopwatch and it clocked in at an amazing 3 minutes 45 seconds…..

Pho Hoa H Rev 01 Pho Hoa H Rev 02Being the consistent (or as the Missus calls it, "boring") person that I am. I went with #4.

Man, look at all that basil, sprouts, and ngo gai. Some of the basil was turning color, but there was so much of it that it really didn't matter.

The broth was darker than on my previous visit, slightly beefy, not overly sweet as is the norm for san Diego pho these days. Perhaps a bit too defatted, but not bad overall. I didn't need lime to cut the saltiness.

The clump of noodles still had a nice pull to them….I guess when you get the bowl to the table in less than five minutes, there's no chance of the noodles getting mushy.

Pho Hoa H Rev 03

Pho Hoa H Rev 04

The flank was better this time around; though still too tough for my liking; the tendon decent, and the tripe had a nice crunch.

And like on previous visits, in and out in less than 30 minutes.

Noodling Around City Heights – 777 Noodle House

It was 730am….Sunday. I was getting hungry and wanted some noodles…..it seemed the perfect time to head to my next stop on my "Noodling Around City Heights" tour. Since the next stop on University would be 777 Noodle House. Man, hard to believe the place has been open nearly 10 years now. I arrived a tad after 8am and was surprised to see several tables already occupied.

Nood CH 777 01

And the one woman who works here always remembers me; even though I don't drop by quite as often these days. She smiled and told me "Happy New Year" as I sat and was handed the menu. And while I do on occasion order different items…..well, this is a "Noodling Around" post; so I stuck with my usual, the Hu Tieu Nam Vang ("Phnom Penh Noodles") Kho ("Dry"). I know; I did a comparison post just a few months back. Still, I was quite interested in how the Hu Tieu Nam Vang was going to be; while it was pretty good on my last two visits, I'd had a not so great version there several visits back.

Glad to say that this was closer to the last two positive visits.

Nood CH 777 02 Nood CH 777 03While the noodles were a tad over-cooked this time around; it had more sauce on it than usual; which was a good thing. The blanched bean sprouts are always appreciated. The broth with the hunk of pork in it wasn't too salty and the pork was adequately tender. Loved the minced, fried garlic which wasn't overly bitter. This bowl still has the cheapest, most rustic ingredients…….though it's nice to finish by pouring what's left of the broth into the bowl and scarfing it up. Plus, this is still $7.50……pretty much a bargain these days.

Pho Duoi Bo from Pho Ca Dao & Grill (Mira Mesa)

Well, I've done it again…..I gave in to the power of suggestion. In my PCD ECB revisit post, both Elle and Sandy mentioned PCD MM, in my PT Eatery post Lynn mentioned that Pho Ca Dao in Mira Mesa had gone downhill since the remodel. Waaaay back when I did my Pho Duoi Bo from the now closed Royal Garden, I mentioned that the Mira Mesa location of PCD had Oxtail pho….at least at one time to Jan Frederick. And so here I was…..seated at Pho Ca Dao in Mira Mesa.

PCD MM 01

It sure looks a lot more modern than the last time I did a post on this location of Pho Ca Dao. Would you believe that was 11 1/2 years ago! Sheesh. I did return a couple of years ago with coworkers….had a not-so-good bowl of pho and didn't take any photos. But my memory did not fail me (this time). There was indeed Pho Duoi Bo (Oxtail Pho) on the menu.

PCD MM 02

That's what I was here for.

PCD MM 03 PCD MM 04I was a bit surprised when my bowl arrived as it seemed kind of small…….and just having the clump of noodles on the bottom and two pieces of oxtail with little else made it seem somewhat sparse. There wasn't much bean sprouts provided, though the sprig of basil was quite large.

Cutting straight to the oxtails….well, they were pretty good, nice beefy flavor, tender, but not falling to pieces, not bad at all.

The broth however was a fail.

PCD MM 05 PCD MM 06Lacking in color, light on the richness, this tasted like salt water and like the Missus says "like someone had waved a beef bone over boiled water"…… A bit on the salty side; in need of….well, just about everything….except more salt and MSG.

The noodles were nicely prepared.

And for an even bigger surprise…….well, I didn't expect Culantro (Ngo Gai) and didn't get it…but I really didn't expect Cilantro along with my basil and sprouts. Since when is that a thing?

I'm not much of a big eater these days; but for the first time in I don't know how long; I was still hungry when I left the restaurant.

Another thing I noticed; looking at the signs for the other Pho Ca Dao locations; only RB, Poway, and Mira Mesa are represented. Is the original and other locations owned by someone else? Elle had mentioned the menu had become more westernized….sorry to say I really didn't take time to look at it in detail.

PCD MM 07

Service was nice, the Pho Duoi Bo fairly pricey for the portion size ($9.85). It'll probably be another decade before I return.

Noodling Around City Heights – Pho Ca Dao (El Cajon Boulevard)

Welcome to another "Noodling Around Post" as I make my way down both El Cajon Boulevard and University Avenue from 54th Street. Well, right in the same parking lot as the often overlooked Tan Ky Mi Gia is Pho Ca Dao. I believe this is the original location, way before restaurants in Santee, Mira Mesa, Chula Vista, and Rancho Bernardo came into existence.

PCD was the perfect choice for this morning; first off, I hadn't been here for almost 4 years! And they open at 7am…….I arrived at around 730 and there were more than a few tables slurping about. Say what you will; even I thought it was pretty chilly this past morning at 44 degrees in Bay Park…..but a look out the window where and you'd never know it.

PCD ECB Rev 01

Much has changed on the "pho-rizon" over the years; two things fairly quickly became apparent….the young lady serving me had a nice bright smile on…..quite different from the "dealing out the menu and standing silently over you" for an order. Also, the #4, which what I usually order here (today was no different), was a mere $4.95 in 2006. These days I thought the $7.95 price was a steal for pho in San Diego.

PCD ECB Rev 03

Also these days; I feel like I hit the lottery when I actually get some Ngo Gai along with the standard issue sprouts and basil. What was quite interesting was that the young lady also brought me chili oil and sliced onions even though I hadn't requested it…..perhaps this is SOP these days?

I've always noticed that there a certain pattern to the bowl of pho at PCD.

PCD ECB Rev 02 PCD ECB Rev 03aA rather generous clump of noodles is placed in the bottom of the bowl. The protein is then placed in a layer; tripe under everything, with the flank, brisket, well done steak, and tendon each occupying a quarter of the surface area.

On previous visits, the broth had been on the salty-MSG heavy side; today it was on the typical "San Diego sweeter" side, but also had beefy tones. Which would not been too bad, except the soup was barely past lukewarm; thus the bean sprouts and such didn't soften, and the broth had a weird, greasy tongue feel to it.

PCD ECB Rev 04 PCD ECB Rev 05I had always enjoyed the tendon at this location of PCD and today it was still tender and buttery, but there wasn't much of it in the bowl. The nice portion of tripe was crunchy, with no off flavors. Because of the broth temperature, the tastelessness of the flank and brisket were quite apparent and it was also on the cold side.

The noodles were good with a nice chew, except it seemed that I had gotten all of the broken short pieces off banh pho….lots of shorter pieces that really cut down on one's eating enjoyment.

PCD ECB Rev 06 PCD ECB Rev 07So, not quite what I expected here. And as a nice parting gift, the young lady working the register did a nice job of reminding me what classic pho shop service used to be like……oh, yes….the good old days!

Is PT Eatery Ready for P(rime) T(ime)?

**** You can find an updated post here

Back at the end of October, I noticed that Pho T Cali's sign had been covered over. Soon after "DerekR" mentioned that "PT Eatery" was replacing Pho T Cali and that the place was related to Phuong Trang. I went over that Saturday and yes indeed there was a PT Eatery sign up. A little over a week later Eater confirmed that this place was indeed going to sort of be Phuong Trang "light". Even though I think Phuong Trang is pretty much middle of the road Vietnamese…..or perhaps gateway Vietnamese? I decided to give the place a couple of tries…..

PT Eat 01 PT Eat 02This restaurant seems to have kept most of the same décor from Pho T Cali throwing in a larger divider of faux (not pho) plants and such.

The young man who waited on me was really friendly and asked if I'd been here previously……..I told him "no….how long have you been open?" He laughed and said "a week". As he handed me my menu; he asked me if he could recommend a couple of items on the menu……he was so very nice. He recommended the Beef Short Rib Pho…….shades of Pho Duyen Mai! So I went ahead and ordered it ($11.95).

PT Eat 02b

While some of the basil was starting to brown; this was a decent sized portion of basil and sprouts….at least for these days. And of course; I expected no Ngo Gai and got none.

Soon enough my bowl arrived.

PT Eat 03 PT Eat 04Let's first talk about what I liked about this bowl of pho….well, the broth was hot. It ended there. The soup was soooo salty, had so much MSG in it that all the other flavors were masked……there's not enough lime in world to fix this much MSG. I even added some water to see if it would help….of course it didn't.

The two ribs were super tough and rubbery. In the photo below you see how much of the rib I managed to chew off the bone.

The noodles……in a clump, overcooked, and mushy.

PT Eat 05

I just couldn't bear to eat much of this.

Luckily; so I thought, I'd hedged my bets by ordering one of what I consider to be the better menu items at Phuong Trang; the Butter Wings ($7.95).

PT Eat 06

I was rather taken aback when the wings arrived looking so pale. It was however, fairly crisp, though it softened quite quickly, and the wings were moist and well cooked. Much like the pho however; these also had way too much MSG, making it strangely metallic-sweet-bitter-salty. It was however, the lesser of two evils.

The really nice young man asked me why I had barely done any damage to the pho and if I wanted it to go……. I gently told him I wouldn't be needing it to go; that the soup had so much MSG it was bitter-salty. I think he understood since he had kindly refilled my glass of water four times during the meal.

Man, that was a kind of rough meal……though on one hand the place was still in its soft-opening phase…..on the other; Phuong Trang has been making this stuff for over thirty years!

A few days later I had a meeting in the area and decided to give it another go. I was pretty hungry so I ordered the Combination Broken Rice (Com Tam – $11.50). The plate that arrived looked pretty good.

PT Eat 08 PT Eat 09A quick look at the nuoc mam cham and I knew it was watered down…which it was…."sauce not to offend", it was much more sweet than savory.

The broken rice was interesting….super moist, but not as fragrant as what I've usually had.

The "Bi" – shredded pork skin was decently prepared, a bit on the dry side and short on rice powder, but not bad.

PT Eat 11 PT Eat 12The "cha", steamed egg and pork loaf was kind of odd. It was moist, though fairly thin and pretty short in terms of pork skin and cloud ear fungus. It had a decent porkiness, but, what's with all that yellow color that came off on the rice. Check the photo below, under the tan hu ky….the shrimp paste in bean curd skin.

Speaking of the Tan Hu Ky; it lacked crispness, the bean curd was mushy, and this was very bland.

PT Eat 10

The pork patty was perhaps the best item on the plate. While somewhat toothsome, it had a mild savory-sweetness to it.

Overall, fairly mediocre and this really didn't give me a reason to return…..but for some reason I did a week later.

Except, when I got to the table, I really didn't know what to order. I saw that another table had ordered the Nem Nuong Cuon ($5.95) – again shades of Pho Ban Mai and Pho Duyen Mai….though this was not even close.

PT Eat 13 PT Eat 14They did the Brodard thing; fried egg roll wrapper in the center….but it was what was missing that mattered to me the most. Yes, the nem nuong was large, but it hadn't been seared, was rubbery, and was really bland. The filling was mainly lettuce and bun….I could make out no herbs to speak of. For some reason the wrapper was really hard and chewy. I took one back for Calvin….who hated it.

As for what to have with the spring rolls…..well, I was at a loss…..then; thinking about my previous meals; the menu….the sort of "Westernized – Vietnamese light"…..the super salty broth….I ordered the "Pho French Dip" ($8.95), a pseudo Banh Mi…..

PT Eat 15 PT Eat 16Standard issue banh mi; decently heated, light and yeasty, with "pho cut" beef brisket, tender, still dripping with broth, with bland, but blanched bean sprouts, adding a decent textural contrast, onions, cilantro…….I spooned on that super salty pho broth; which did well in small doses, under this framework. A leaf of basil, a small spoon of broth, a bite of the sandwich. While I'm not going to be craving this again soon, it is probably the best thing I had at PT. PT Eat 17

So, is PT ready for P(rime) T(ime)…….I think you can figure out what I think.

Nice service; slightly higher prices, and perhaps, even with all that experience in the kitchen….the nice young man told me the cooks in the kitchen have over 40 years of experience making Vietnamese Food, in need of some time to get into the cooking groove…… I'm definitely going to give this place "some time" before returning.

Noodling Around City Heights – Bun Mang Vit from Tu Thanh

My next stop on my "Noodling Around" tour was Tu Thanh. I have a rather long history with Bun Mang Vit made by Chi Tu Thanh. It started back in back in 2006 at a place named "Chinese Kitchen"; which did its majority of business doing Chinese fast food…..but there was a menu on the wall of  Vietnamese dishes. And I loved the Bun Mang Vit there. Eventually Chi Tu Thanh opened up her own restaurant, which I frequented; though on my last couple of visits things just weren't up to par. So, I just basically filed the place away, until I recently read Faye's post on Tu Thanh….it seemed that she enjoyed the food there. So, since I started doing my "noodling around City Heights" thing; I decided to head back.

Rev TT 01

Tu Thanh opens at 8am; which makes for a nice breakfast for me. I arrived right past 8 and the folks here actually smiled and greeted me. They walked on over and asked if I knew what I wanted…..and even though I've always wanted to try other items on the menu I said "Bun Mang Vit of course"…..which made them laugh.

Soon enough, my Bun Mang Vit ($9) arrived.

Rev TT 02 Rev TT 03So, in terms of what I'd had from Chinese Kitchen years ago; this was ok….no banana blossom which added a wonderful slightly astringent crunch to things and definitely less dried bamboo shoots. But compared to my last two visits; this was much better. The duck neatly cut and tender….the Nuoc Mam Gung was wonderfully gingery-slightly sweet-tangy-savory. I have a certain way of eating things….not sure if it's "correct"; but Chi Tu Thanh taught me to eat things this way years ago. For the duck; I dip it in the broth…it warms it up a bit (a good study in temperature and flavor) and in the end adds a bit of flavor to the broth; it then gets a dunk in the sauce, which livens things up. The veggies get the same….what ever escapes adds to the flavor of the rather neutral flavored broth. A dunk in the steaming broth (as it was this day) changes the texture of the herbs a vegetables and whatever escapes adds to the flavor of the broth…those stray veggies do eventually get a dip in the sauce as well. An interesting contrast in textures and flavors. I usually wait to eat the rehydrated bamboo until later in the meal as it has then gotten tender and has lent some nice earthiness to things.

It's a dish of assertive, strong flavored ingredients, where one can have subtle changes in texture and flavor along the way.

Rev TT 04

Is it as good as way back when….I don't think so….but it's still better than any other version I've had in San Diego. So, until something better comes along….which hasn't happened in over a decade; this will do.

Noodling Around City Heights – Tan Ky Mi Gia

**** Tan Ky Mi Gia has closed

For my next "noodling around" post, I decided to start on ECB and move West from 54th. The first place from there is the discreetly located Tan Ky Mi Gia; which used to be Hinh Ky Mi Gia, TKMG CH 06 02which used to be Tan Ky Mi Gia….if you're keeping score. The menu still says Hinh Ky Mi Gia……

I mentioned during the post on my last visit, that it seemed the placed hadn't aged too well.

During this visit, I noticed that the light for half the restaurant weren't even turned on.

TKMG CH 01

Instead of ordering what I usually would here; I recalled that the Missus actually enjoyed the duck when this place was still Hinh Ky and I promised to try the duck again during my previous visit, so I went with the Egg Noodle with Flavor Duck; which is steamed rather than roasted. To be perfectly honest; that duck looked pretty spooky; due to the almost totally black color when it arrived.

TKMG CH 02 TKMG CH 03But it was not bad; I expected really salty, but it had a strong anise-five spice flavor and was tender. It did a fairly strong offal-gamey flavor.

The simple broth was better than what I'd had previously; not so much MSG this time, decent richness, with a mild savory-seafood finish.

TKMG CH 04

The rather generous portion of noodles were firm, with a slight "crunch" to them.

During my visit there were no less than five take-out orders and some guys from the, ahem, "coffee shop" next door came in for soup as I was leaving, so I'm guessing they are doing ok business. The owner; is same from my visits over a decade ago; so it seems they just keep rolling along.

Noodling Around City Heights – Bun Rieu from Phuong Nga 2

Since it's soup weather again here in San Diego; I decided to circle back and revisit all those places East of the 805 and West of 54th Street. I decided to start the corner of 54th and University, to a place that "FOY Elle" recommended to me back in early 2018. Phuong Nga 2. As of my last visit at the end of last year; I thought it was by far, the best Bun Rieu in San Diego…… So, now, I was interested to see how things were going at PN2….

PH2 01

I arrived shortly after opening, though the older woman here was running around like crazy since there was a huge line of take-out and catering orders on the front tables. Still, I got me Bun Rieu ($8.45) order in and it arrived fairly quickly.

PH2 02 PH2 03First off, the herbs and veggies were sparkling fresh…..this is one of the few places that still serve shredded banana bossom…..red perilla and of course the ever handy little container of fermented shrimp paste.

Like previous visits; the right type…thinner, bun was used. It was perfectly prepared, firm and stretchy.

The broth was not as sweet or tangy as before and perhaps a bit "lighter". It was by no means bad…..but that container of shrimp paste came in mighty handy.

PH2 04

The "meat and crab cakes" were light and fluffy, though mostly pork. The fried tofu cubes did well dipped in the mam tom. The tomato was better than on previous visits….perhaps more "in season"; and were nice and tangy. The piece of pork rib was a bit too tough and chewy this time around. I still really enjoy the small dried shrimp scattered in the broth which adds a nice savory, "umami bomb" to things.

PH2 05

It' still my favorite Bun Rieu in San Diego…..if anyone has some "contenders" let me know. And Elle; I'll always be grateful for your recommendation.

So, I'm thinking of heading down West on University, then turning back East and revisiting all those places I've posted on before. I haven't seen any new places pop up recently…have you?

Revisits – Woomiok and Mien Trung

It feels like (San Diego) winter now; so here's a couple of revisits to a new place on the rotation and an old favorite.

Woomiok:

Woomiok has become a favorite of the Missus. So, with the recent cooler weather, the Missus wanted Her fix.

Woomiok Rev 01

This time around we ordered the assorted beef in stone pot. As with previous visits; the kkakdugi and the squid panchan were the best, while the baechu kimchi was decent but, could have used some really more intense fermented flavor. The japchae was really bland.

We were pleasantly surprised with the portion size of the dish ($34.99).

Woomiok Rev 02 Woomiok Rev 03The tendon was buttery and the brisket and other usual "tougher cuts" were tender and beefy. There was what looked like typical pho top round, which was drier and tough and the worst cut overall. The bone based broth was very nice with a touch of salt. A very comforting dish overall. In fact, I loved the leftovers which I mixed with rice and heated up; making a rice porridge of sorts.

We left warm and satisfied.

Mien Trung:

Just like last year; Mien Trung was my first real meal out after returning from our trip.

MT Again 01

The place was hopping; I just ordered the smaller bowl of Bun Bo Hue. It looked kinda light; but it was pretty good. Nice spice, great lemongrass flavor, the meats were more tender than on previous visits….even the tendon. Not over-loaded with MSG……the noodles were slippery and firm; the veggies (I still miss not having banana blossom though) fresh.

MT Again 02

This had that "aaaah" factor going.

K Sandwiches (again)

mmm-yoso!!! is a food blog. Kirk and His Missus are having an adventure in travel right now and Cathy is writing today's post.

Kirk's second post about K Sandwiches, written in 2005, was complimentary about the (newly opened) banh mi joint.  K sandwiches thrived for a bit more than ten years.

Fullsizeoutput_be9 There was a fire in August 2015, requiring a major rebuild.  The eatery finally reopened in January 2018. Lines were long. The menu was refined.  It is still a sandwich place with banh mi, French bread loaves, croissants and various sweets baked daily.

K Sandwiches is a 'regular' stop for The Mister or myself when out and about and eating alone as well as a place for sharing items when we are together.  The food items to be found here are various.
IMG_6103 Bahn mi sandwiches are always made to order. This is the #6, meatball ($4.75), which is quite good combined with the 'usual' banh mi toppings of pickled carrots and radishes along with cilantro and jalapeño slices and some mayonnaise.  The corse ground meat is very 'meatloaf' in style and flavor.
IMG_8827Fresh made spring rolls, in a variety of meat choices ($3.49), are always a good choice. These shrimp and pork rolls were filled with lettuces, herbs, cucumber, carrot and sprouts.

Pretty much every beverage we choose here is a black coffee, add half and half ($2.75).

The 'sweet croissant' ($1.65) was a new-to-me item from the grab-it-yourself baked goods area.  Soft yet flaky and still warm; satisfying.
IMG_8248
IMG_8238 The Honey Mayo Shrimp Croissant ($8.25) is the highest priced sandwich on the menu. Worth it. Lightly covered in rice flour then fried, the shrimp still have a slight crunch even with the mayonnaise coating.  Simply served on shredded lettuce along with a fresh made croissant, this is a wonderfully decadent meal.
IMG_8238The Mister has been ordering the Chicken Curry ($7) since 2007, when he saw someone enjoying it at another table.  You can get it with a banh mi or rice; the banh mi seems to be easier to work with, with all the sauce.  There were three chicken legs in this bowl, along with the onions and potatoes.  Such a great curry flavor!
IMG_8265Not much is inedible. That is a very deep bowl. 351C25BC-C5B8-496F-A69E-17C7F790191DSometimes a simple #9, grilled pork banh mi ($4.75) is my craving.  Always fresh and tasty.  I think the warm, grilled-to-order, flavorful pork is part of the comfort.
2AA6923D-365A-4245-A11B-5A6E437B9A2B There are a few small menus taped to various display racks in the small store.  The Mister saw a "Rice or Noodle Combo, choose two items $7.25". He chose noodles (rice noodles served warm) and his items were grilled beef and pork cha (steamed egg minced pork meatloaf). There are lettuces, cucumber, pickled sprouts and carrots along with the jalapeño.  The dressing is topped with peanuts.  Combine all these flavors and you have Bun Cha, one of my favorite meals at every Vietnamese restaurant.
